Verdict

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, despite being a reliable device, isn't the best smartphone in the mid-range segment anymore. Xiaomi frankly borrowed a leaf out of OnePlus' book and refined the popular Redmi Note 5 Pro, and didn't really upgrade it. And in the mid-range segment where loyalties shift with a bump in megapixels or RAM, the Redmi Note 6 Pro could be threatened by other, more powerful devices in that category. Read on to find out why.

Redmi Note 6 Pro detailed review

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro comes just eight months after the launch of its predecessor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro. In a recent IDC report, Xiaomi remained in top of the Indian smartphone market and grew by an astonishing 27 percent. The chief drivers of the growth were the affordable Redmi 5A and the Redmi Note 5 Pro. When the Note 5 Pro  launched back in February 2018, it set a benchmark for performance in the mid-range segment by introducing the Snapdragon 636 alongside 6 gigs of RAM. No wonder it sold like hot cakes.

With the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, Xiaomi has done something that OnePlus is known to do. Xiaomi refreshed it’s best-selling offering in a short span of time, improving upon the usability with new software-based features, while leaving out a notable hardware upgrade. While that has worked out well for OnePlus so far in the high-end segment, the mid-range category is a whole different story. With the likes of the Realme 2 Pro, the Moto One Power, and Xiaomi’s own Mi A2 for company in that segment, the Redmi Note 6 Pro has a tough road ahead to glory.

Will its follow-up, the Redmi Note 6 Pro live up to the same hype? More importantly, is it still the high performer? Let’s find out.

Design

The Redmi Note 6 Pro is basically the old Note 5 Pro, but with a notch cut-out in the display. As ugly as the notch looks, Xiaomi gave in to the growing demand of a larger, bezel-less display and the notch was the only way to give the people what they wanted. It doesn’t really help things here as the notch is rather wide and offers little space on either sides for icons and notifications. It’s also quite pesky and refuses to go if you’re playing a game like PubG unless you manually turn it off. The notch is present while you’re reading an article and but not when you’re watching a video on YouTube.

Hello notch, my old friend!

Xiaomi’s design philosophy was once appreciated and even copied across the segment. One of the primary proponents of the metal-body design in the price-range, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series popularised the design cues that are now present in almost all Xiaomi phones in the budget and mid-range segment. The company does experiment with other materials like ceramic in its flagship products and even kevlar like it did in the Poco F1. I can safely say the metal body design now looks plain boring. Heck, it’s now difficult to tell one Xiaomi phone apart from the other if you’re looking at them from the back. Despite that, one has to admit that these metal-bodied phones are anyday more durable than your glass-sandwich ones even though the latter looks much, much better. You’re anyway going to slap a case on it and if that’s the case, there’s no point calling Xiaomi out for using a recurring design if it’s made to last. But then, the Redmi Note 5 Pro unit we had received for review, doesn’t work all that well now. The power button on the right needs to be pressed harder to have it register. Hopefully, the Redmi Note 6 Pro has better internal construction and durability.

The side bulges are the only thing distinctive in the design

While there’s hardly any major difference in the design of the Redmi Note 6 Pro, Xiaomi did introduce slightly curved edges on the back, with sides that bulge out from the body. It does help in gripping the phone better. The rounded corners also doesn’t let the phone dig into the palm. The dual-camera unit on the back is aligned vertically on the top left corner with the fingerprint sensor located centrally, right where the index finger can reach. The Redmi Note 6 Pro also shaved off the bezels from below, but only by a hair and unless you’re comparing the Note 6 Pro against the Note 5 Pro side-by-side, there’s no way to tell. It’s quite a big bezel though and phones like the Honor 8X are honestly a better alternative if a bezel-less display is what you’re looking for in a phone.

I have mixed feelings about the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s design. At the fag end of the year, after using a bunch of Xiaomi devices that look all the same, I’ve grown tired of the reiteration. However, it’s durable and can take more scratches and bumps than a glass-bodied phone, and that should be a priority in the mid-range segment.

Display

This is where the Redmi Note 6 Pro primarily differs from the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Note 6 Pro sports a larger 6.26-inch display that has an ugly notch on top, which is how Xiaomi increased the screen size without increasing the footprint of the phone. However, most of the extra screen real-estate is eaten up by the notch itself, and there’s hardly any space for the icons and notifications. The phone does offer the option to turn the notch off, but you have to do it manually by whitelisting apps. Videos are cut out in 16:9 aspect ratio by default and in apps like YouTube you can stretch it to 18:9 aspect ratio, but there will still be space left unused. The notch, like we have mentioned countless times, serves no purpose whatsoever, and should just go.

Colours on the Redmi Note 6 Pro are a little more vibrant

Apart from that, the panel on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is of a higher quality than it’s predecessor. While the brightness levels are more or less the same (500 lux), colours are more vibrant and crisp on this one. The phone also offers options to tweak the white balance and colour temperature, but if you don’t know what you're doing, it’s better to maintain the default settings.

Performance and Software

This is where there’s hardly any difference in between the Redmi Note 6 Pro and it’s predecessor. All other Redmi Note phone have outperformed their respective predecessors in both benchmark tests and in real-world usage, but not this one. The Redmi Note 6 Pro relies on the same Snapdragon 636 SoC coupled with either 4GB or 6GB RAM,  along with 64GB storage. While the hardware configuration did excite us in the beginning of the year, by the end of 2018, it has become the standard. The Snapdragon 636, with it’s eight Kryo 260 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, is now aging quickly in the face of the Snapdragon 660 and the Kirin 710 being offered in the same price. The benchmark reports corroborate that.

On AnTuTu, the Redmi Note 6 Pro scored 116046 against the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s 112652, while the Realme 2 Pro with a Snapdragon 660 outscored both of them with 128430 and the Mi A2 trumped even that score with 128895. With similar price points, it becomes an easy choice if you’re looking for the best performance. On Geekbench Single Core and Multi Core tests that puts the CPU capabilities to test, the Redmi Note 6 Pro scored 1632 and 3233 respectively. The scores are once again in line with the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1  and here again, the Realme 2 Pro and the Mi A2 outperformed the Note 6 Pro with significantly higher scores. Even on 3DMark Slingshot, which tests the graphics processing capabilities of a device, the scores are similar for both the Redmi Note 6 Pro and it’s predecessor while the Mi A2 and the Realme 2 Pro outscored it by a long margin.

Based on the performance benchmark scores, it’s easy to see that the Redmi Note 6 Pro is not the best Xiaomi has to offer in that price. The Mi A2, with the Snapdragon 660 SoC and Android One-certified stock Android UI is what we would recommend, but if you’re married to the MIUI ecosystem, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is your next best option.

In real-world usage, the difference in performance isn’t all that much. The phone runs MIUI 10 out of the box and it’s optimised brilliantly for the phone. I didn’t face any lag or stutter while opening apps, or browsing the internet. However, the MIUI 10 interface on this phone is based on Android 8.1 Oreo and not the latest Android version. The new update brings gesture-based navigation and a new recent apps menu which is more card-based and arranged vertically. There’s support for autofill now, and a new app management system in Settings. More than that, MIUI feels fast and snappy with quick animations. The phone also boots quickly in around 30 seconds and apps launch slightly faster than the Note 5 Pro.

PubG Mobile is playable on this phone

Gaming on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is not the best experience. Most games will run although the graphically-demanding ones have to be played in low or medium settings. We played PubG Mobile on the Redmi Note 6 Pro with GameBench plugged in, and it recorded a stable FPS of 25. On flagships like the OnePlus 6T, you get around 40 FPS. While FPS count isn’t as much as what flagships offer, you do get stable gameplay with a variability index of 1 FPS on an average across five sessions we tested.

Courtesy: Gamebench

It goes without saying that even though this isn’t the fastest phone in the mid-range segment by any means, it’s fairly reliable and functional and will not let you down.

Camera

The Redmi Note 6 Pro while not offering any upgrades in raw performance, ups the ante when it comes to imaging. The phone’s dual camera unit at the back is better thanks to a bigger sensor with larger 1.4um pixels and a wider f/1.9 aperture as compared to that on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. On the front, inside that ugly notch are two sensors as well for selfies. The secondary sensor, like that on the rear, is used for calculating the depth of field.

12+5MP dual camera with bigger sensors and wider aperture

The notch houses dual front cameras

The camera on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is much better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s. In the day as well as in low-light, the Redmi Note 6 Pro takes images that are aesthetically pleasing. The camera relies on machine learning to recognise scenes across 32 categories including buildings, greenery, animals, people, etc. The AI mode is turned off by default and once you turn it on, it automatically recognises what you’re shooting within 1-2 seconds, but what it’s actually doing after recognising is not clear. In some instances, like shooting foliage, the greens do look more vibrant while low-light photos are processed using noise-reduction algorithms. But there’s no real clarity on what the AI is doing in reality. But to cut things short, the Redmi Note 6 Pro can take good photos that are sharp, vibrant and are visually appealing.

Camera Samples:

For more image samples, check out our Flickr Gallery.

We did an article after testing the camera extensively where we concluded the camera on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is more than capable of taking good photos, and is much better than that on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. But the Mi A2 trumps it in low-light with its pixel-binning technique. The Note 6 Pro applies the same technique for selfies with its 20+2MP front camera and the selfies do come out better in low-light because of it.

Further, the Note 6 Pro offers a new experience of portrait mode with dynamic bokeh. The blurred part warps into different shapes and if you ask me, I found them pretty cool. The phone also has various lighting effects and thankfully, Xiaomi’s implementation works much better than what the Realme 2 Pro or the Honor 8X offers.

Overall, the Redmi Note 6 Pro’s primary claim to fame is the camera. That’s where most of the work has gone in developing the phone.

Battery

What a day-and-a-half battery life looks like

The Redmi Note 6 Pro with its 4,000mAh battery offers the same one and a half day battery life like its predecessor. While we would have liked a bigger battery on the phone like the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, this one is more than enough to last the entire day. What’s disappointing is that Xiaomi offers a 5V charger out of the box that can’t fast-charge the device. It still uses a micro-USB port to charge even when the Mi A2, offered at nearly the same price has a USB-Type C port. The battery drain while playing PubG was around 15 percent for a full 30-minute session which isn’t all that bad considering other phones also have similar drainage pattern.

Bottomline

The Redmi Note 6 Pro, like we noted before is no longer a leader in the mid-range segment. With underwhelming performance, and a lacklustre design, it’s now a follower. It’s still offers good value for your money though, it’s just not the best, which is what we expect from Redmi’s Note lineup anyway. The Note 6 Pro somewhat redeems itself with good imaging prowess, but if you’re looking for an out-and-out performer, the Realme 2 Pro or the Honor 8X are phones you can consider. Or if you have to stick to Xiaomi and can make do with stock Android, the Mi A2 is a no-brainer. To be frank, I couldn’t find a legit reason to recommend the Note 6 Pro apart from the high value for money. In the mid-range segment where spec-sheets rule the roost and design slowly getting noticed, Xiaomi could have spent a few more months and followed up the popular Redmi Note 5 Pro with a worthy successor.

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

The dinosaur known as “STAN,”, approximately 67 million years old, was discovered in 1987 in South Dakota by amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison.

“He showed it to scientists at the time who unfortunately misidentified it as a triceratops,” James Hyslop, Christie’s head of Science and Natural History, told Reuters.

Triceratops remains are relatively common in the paleontological world, so the bones failed to garner much interest until Sacrison took them to the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota in 1992.

Researchers there “realized pretty quickly that they had something special in their hands,” said Hyslop. They recategorized STAN as a T. rex and mounted a new search to uncover the rest of the bones. They recovered 188 out of an estimated 300 total for any T. rex, Hyslop said.

Most T. rex skeletons are held by museums and private institutions. The auction is an opportunity for a private collector or institution to acquire the bones, Christie’s said.

STAN is 40 feet long and 13 feet high, Christie’s said. He is also notable for two fused vertebrae scientists have identified in his neck, suggesting the dinosaur broke his neck and survived during his lifetime. “The clue is in the name, the Tyrannosaurus rex,” Hyslop said. “He is the tyrant lizard king.”

Christie’s will display the dinosaur from Wednesday to mid-October at its Manhattan, New York location, the company said. It plans to book socially distant viewings for the public.

“We’ve got the skull displayed at ground level so that you can get really up close and personal with him and just see the serrations on his teeth,” Hyslop said. “His longest tooth is 11 inches long. It’s just terrifying to behold.”

Christie’s has estimated the value of the dinosaur at between $6 million and $8 million.

Hurricane Sally Hits US Gulf Coast, Threatens "Historic" Flooding

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 2 storm hit Gulf Shores, Alabama at about 4:45 am (0945 GMT), bringing maximum sustained winds of about 105 miles (165 kilometers) per hour.

Hurricane Sally Hits US Gulf Coast, Threatens 'Historic' Flooding

Hurricane Sally was expected to pick up speed through Wednesday.

New Orleans:

Hurricane Sally barrelled into the US Gulf Coast early Wednesday, with forecasts of drenching rains that could provoke "historic" and potentially deadly flash floods.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 2 storm hit Gulf Shores, Alabama at about 4:45 am (0945 GMT), bringing maximum sustained winds of about 105 miles (165 kilometers) per hour.

"Historic life-threatening flooding likely along portions of the northern Gulf coast," the Miami-based center had warned late Tuesday, adding the hurricane could dump up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain in some areas.

About 75,000 homes in Alabama and Florida were already without power Tuesday evening, according to the Weather Channel, and video posted to social media appeared to show some areas had started to flood.

Sally had been at a crawling pace of two miles per hour, but was expected to pick up speed through Wednesday.

Alabama governor Kay Ivey told a press conference: "We are looking at record flooding, perhaps breaking historic levels. And with rising water comes a greater risk for loss of property and life.

"I urge you in the strongest way possible to evacuate if conditions permit and seek shelter elsewhere as possible today."

Ivey had declared a state of emergency Monday ahead of Sally's arrival.

President Donald Trump, speaking on "Fox & Friends," compared Sally to Hurricane Laura, which battered Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Caribbean, just a few weeks ago.

Record year

"This one is smaller but it's a little bit more direct, but we have it under control," he said. "We have it under watch very strongly."

Earlier, he tweeted: "We are fully engaged with State & Local Leaders to assist the great people of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi."

He urged people in the storm's path to "listen to State and Local Leaders."

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves had also declared a state of emergency ahead of the approaching storm.

He said the storm surge projections were "worrisome with anywhere from five to eight feet of coastal surge."

Governor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana, which is still recovering after Hurricane Laura made landfall in the state as a Category 4 storm, told residents Monday to be prepared.

"Be smart and be safe," he tweeted.

At a hurricane refuge in Pascagoula, a coastal town in eastern Mississippi, 50-year-old evacuee Cliton Shepherd was hoping the area could avoid the worst.

"I don't think the wind is going to hurt anything, hopefully. I pray that it doesn't. But that's the main thing, you know, hoping and praying for the best, that's all we can do."

There have been so many tropical storms in the Atlantic this year that the UN's World Meteorological Organization, which names the tempests, is about to run out of names for only the second time in history.

The last time was in 2005, the year Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

The latest Atlantic storm, Hurricane Paulette, pounded the island of Bermuda on Monday with Category 2 winds and heavy rains, according to the NHC.

The center also said Tropical Storm Teddy, currently positioned in the mid-Atlantic, was expected to become a hurricane.

PAOK Dump Benfica Out Of Champions League Qualifying

Former European Cup winners Benfica crashed out of the Champions League third qualifying round after a shock 21 defeat at PAOK Salonika on Tuesday as Serbia winger Andrija Zivkovic scored against his former club a week after leaving them.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:43 AM IST

SALONIKA, Greece: Former European Cup winners Benfica crashed out of the Champions League third qualifying round after a shock 2-1 defeat at PAOK Salonika on Tuesday as Serbia winger Andrija Zivkovic scored against his former club a week after leaving them.

Dynamo Kiev also advanced to the playoff round with a 2-0 home win over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, as did Belgians Gent after they beat visitors Rapid Vienna 2-1.

PAOK’S reward is a two-legged playoff against Russians Krasnodar, while Dynamo face Gent for berths in the money-spinning group stage featuring 32 teams.

Benfica, who won Europe’s premier club competition in 1961 and 1962, saw last season’s woes spill over into this term as Zivkovic, who endured four difficult seasons in Portugal, rubbed salt into their wounds.

Having seen the domestic league and cup double go to Porto last term, Benfica missed a string of chances against PAOK in a one-sided first half as they enjoyed 72% of possession.

They were punished after the break as Dimitrios Giannoulis poked in the opener from close range in the 63rd minute after a one-two with Chuba Akpom and substitute Zivkovic made it 2-0 in the 75th with a sweet shot inside the near post.

Rafa Silva pulled one back with a stoppage time header but it came too late to avoid an embarrassing defeat which will pile pressure on manager Jorge Jesus, who returned to Benfica during the close season for a second spell in charge.

Having been in charge from 2009 to 2015, Jesus went on to win the elusive double of the Brazilian league title and Copa Libertadores with Flamengo in 2019 but now faces a mammoth task to get Benfica back to winning ways.

Dynamo soaked up pressure on home soil against Alkmaar in the first half before Luxembourg forward Gerson Rodrigues fired them ahead just after the break with a neat finish into the roof of the net thanks to good work by Vitaliy Buyalskiy.

Mykola Shaparenko sealed their passage with a late header after visiting keeper Marco Bizot misjudged Tomasz Kedziora’s cross from the right which left the midfielder with the simple task of nodding the ball into an empty net.

Niklas Dorsch headed Gent into a 36th-minute lead against Rapid from a pinpoint Sven Kums assist and Roman Yaremchuk added the second with a penalty on the hour before Yusuf Demir netted a stoppage time consolation for the visitors.

In Wednesday’s standout fixtures, 1991 European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade visit Cypriots Omonia Nicosia while Dinamo Zagreb are at Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

MADRID The Spanish capital will introduce selective lockdowns in urban areas where the coronavirus is spreading faster.

Deputy regional health chief Antonio Zapatero said Wednesday that the measures will most likely affect southern, working-class neighborhoods of Madrid where infection rates have been steadily soaring since August.

Zapatero said that Madrid wants to flatten the curve before the arrival of autumn and the complications that cold weather could bring, adding that the measures to be taken will be decided by this weekend.

Madrid and its surrounding region of 6.6 million people have accounted for nearly one third of Spain’s new cases, which have averaged 8,200 per day for the past week.

Overall, Spain has had more than 600,000 cases and just over 30,000 deaths.

LONDON The British government plans to ration coronavirus testing, giving priority to health workers and care home staff after widespread reports that people throughout the country were unable to schedule tests.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday will face questions about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the House of Commons and before a key committee amid the outcry over the shortage of testing.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland says the government is in the process of drawing up a new priority list for testing, suggesting that students and their families could be next in line after the National Health Service and social care.

Francis said if people are unable to contemplate the beauty and majesty of nature without exploiting it, they will be similarly unable to contemplate others without taking advantage of them. He said: He who lives to exploit nature ends up exploiting people and treating them like slaves. This is a universal law.

Francis is expected to elaborate on the themes of solidarity, fraternity and care for creation in an encyclical hes expected to sign Oct. 3 on living in the post-COVID world.

HANOI, Vietnam Vietnam will resume international commercial flights connecting the country to several Asian destinations starting Friday, after a monthslong shutdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak.

The flights, however, are reserved for Vietnamese nationals, diplomats, experts, managers, skilled workers, investors and their families. They are not yet available for tourists.

The flights connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to destinations in South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan will operate weekly, the government website announced. Flights connecting Vietnams two largest cities with Cambodia and Laos will resume next week.

To board a flight, passengers must hold a certificate showing they have tested negative for the coronavirus no more than five days before the departure date. Upon arrival, they will be tested and quarantined, the report said.

Vietnam shut down international flights on April 1. National carrier Vietnam Airlines estimated last month that it would lose $650 million in 2020.

Vietnam has reported 1,059 cases of the coronavirus. It managed to avoid any deaths until July, when the virus crept into the city of Da Nang, killing 35 people.

But no new cases have been reported for two weeks. Last week, Da Nang lifted a travel restriction after two months.

PRAGUE The Czech Republic has registered another steep rise in coronavirus infections, with the number of new confirmed cases surpassing 1,600 in one day for the first time.

The Health Ministry says the day-to-day increase reached a new record of 1,677 on Tuesday. The record was broken four times last week.

The capital of Prague has the highest number of people who tested positive, over 141 per 100,000. The surge has prompted some European countries, including Slovakia, Denmark, Britain and Switzerland to impose travel restrictions for travellers from the Czech Republic.

According to government figures released on Wednesday, 333 people needed hospitalization. That number was over 400 during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring.

The Czech Republic has had 38,896 people infected with 476 deaths.

SEOUL, South Korea South Koreas daily coronavirus tally has stayed below 200 for two weeks, but the government is urging people not to lower their guard.

Authorities said Wednesday that the 113 cases added in the last 24 hours took the countrys total to 22,504, including 367 deaths.

Eighty-one of them were in the Seoul metropolitan area, the heart of a recent viral resurgence.

Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip called on people to refrain from having unnecessary gatherings and visiting crowded places.

UNITED NATIONS The new president of the U.N. General Assembly is warning that unilateralism will only strengthen the COVID-19 pandemic and is calling for a new commitment to global cooperation including on the fair and equitable distribution of vaccines.

Turkish diplomat and politician Volkan Bozkir, who took over the reins of the 193-member world body on Tuesday, announced that the General Assembly will hold a high-level special session on the COVID-19 pandemic in early November, though diplomats said the date may slip.

Bozkir takes over from outgoing General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, who presided over a unique year-old session that he said was defined by a pandemic and included virtual meetings and new voting procedures.

Bozkir told diplomats from U.N. member nations, seated at socially distanced spaces in the assembly chamber, that confronting the effects of the coronavirus in all their dimensions will be an overarching priority for my presidency.

He said no state can combat this pandemic alone, and it is the members responsibility to strengthen peoples faith in multilateral cooperation and international institutions, with the U.N. at their center.

Denvers dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.: Denvers dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

Murray scored 40 points, Jokic had a triple-double by the third quarter and Denver again overcame a double-digit deficit to shock the Los Angeles Clippers 104-89 in Game 7 on Tuesday night.

Denver became the first team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 series deficit twice in the same postseason.

Even more history: The Nuggets are the third team in the U.S. major pro sports to rally from a pair of 3-1 deficits in the same playoffs, joining the 1985 Kansas City Royals and 2003 Minnesota Wild.

Denver will face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

The 7-foot Jokic had a monster game with 16 points, 13 assists and 22 rebounds, which were the most by a Nuggets player in an NBA playoff game.

Despite the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers fell short of the conference finals, where theyve never been. They fell to 0-8 all-time in games where they could clinch a trip to the conference finals.

Leonard finished with 14 points on 6-of-22 shooting, while George had 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

HEAT 117, CELTICS 114, OT

Jimmy Butlers three-point play with 12 seconds left put Miami up for good, Bam Adebayo blocked Jayson Tatums dunk attempt in the final seconds and Miami rallied to beat Boston in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Kemba Walkers basket with 23.2 seconds left in overtime put Boston up by one, before Butler muscled his way to the rim for a score while getting fouled by Tatum. The Celtics went to Tatum on the ensuing possession, only to watch him get denied by Adebayo.

And the Heat down by 13 in the first quarter, down by 14 in the fourth struck first, ending Bostons seven-game streak of Game 1 wins.

Tatum scored 30 points for the Celtics, Marcus Smart had 26 points, Walker had 19 and Jaylen Brown added 17. Goran Dragic had 29 points, Jae Crowder scored 22, Jimmy Butler scored 20 and Adebayo had 18 for the Heat.

Miamis Tyler Herro was one assist shy of a triple-double finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Boston led 85-71 early in the fourth and kept the lead for almost all of the final period until Butler connected on a 3-pointer from the right corner with 22 seconds left for a 106-105 Miami edge.

Sushant Singh Rajput partied with Sara Ali Khan, Rhea Chakraborty and core team at Lonavala farmhouse, reveals actor's farmhouse manager

Updated : Sep 16, 2020, 10:19 IST

Sushant Singh Rajput's Lonavala farmhouse manager Raees recently revealed that Sara Ali Khan and Rhea Chakraborty partied frequently at the scenic place along with the actor. He also added that smoking papers were ordered for those occasions. He further added that while it was Sara who would accompany SSR initially along with his core team, Rhea, too, became a frequent visitor as the 'Kedarnath' actress' visits gradually lessened. He said that Rhea's birthday was celebrated last year at the farmhouse with her family and Sushant. Meanwhile, according to a report, a local boatman reportedly told NCB that 'Ganja' and 'liquor' were common in house parties held at SSR's place. He also shared that the late actor would visit the place with his core team and Rhea, Sara, Shraddha Kapoor and arrested drug-peddling suspect Zaid Vilatra.

Maharashtra revenue minister and state Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said onion prices have collapsed due to the ban on export, and asserted that his party will fight against this "injustice" meted out to farmers.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:26 PM IST

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday termed the central government as"anti-farmer" after it banned the export of onions. Terming the decision as wrong, the NCP leader accused the Centre of committing "great sin" of pushing farmers, who were already hit hard by COVID-19, into deeper trouble.

Maharashtra revenue minister and state Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said onion prices have collapsed due to the ban on export, and asserted that his party will fight against this "injustice" meted out to farmers. The central government on Monday banned the export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect to increase availability and curb prices of the commodity in the domestic market.

"The Centre banned onion export at a time when cultivators were getting good prices for their produce. It is absolutely wrong. It is obvious that the Centre is anti-farmer," Pawar alleged. He also referred to NCP president Sharad Pawar raising concerns over the decision before Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday, seeking its reversal.

"Onion growers are already in trouble due to COVID-19. Add to that, the Centre has committed this maha paap (great sin) of pushing the farmers into deeper trouble by banning export," the deputy chief minister said while speaking at a programme in the NCP's head office here.

Maharashtra revenue minister Thorat also criticised the Centre's decision and said onion prices have collapsed by 700 to Rs 800 per tonne due to the ban on export. "Farmers in the state are tackling problems arising out of cyclone and floods, and the state government is doing all it can to help them. But, the Centre is not cooperating," he said.

Earlier, the Centre allowed milk powder import when there were lakhs of tonnes of milk powder in the country. Due to this, milk prices came down, Thorat said. "Now, when there is scope for farmers to earn some money due to onion export, the central government has stopped. We will fight this injustice against farmers," he said.

While there is a lot to talk about the much-awaited trailer, WWE’s Sasha Banks’ cameo is one of the most intriguing parts of the one minute and 52-second clip. Although in a blinks-and- miss glance, Banks appears in a very Jedi-Esque black robe, her hooded character’s identity is yet to be known. The Armorer or mysterious Banks says the words, “This is the way,” halfway through the trailer.

The former WWE Women’s Champion has surely set the WWE Universe blazing with this exciting news. Banks dropped a post on Instagram with a poster of the show and her look in the scene.

The series follows the adventures of a gunfighter making his way through the edges of the galaxy along with a Force-sensitive child. The story centres on the Mandalorian or Mando looking for the Child’s (Baby Yoda) home planet.

The Mandalorian season 1 reaped 15 Emmy nominations, counting one in Outstanding Drama Series. The first season of Disney’s breakthrough TV Series saw no competition topped the charts on its debut and run. The hit series got more and more popular due to witty dialogues and ‘Baby Yoda’ memes that took social media by a storm.

Filming for the upcoming season commenced in October last year and concluded in March this year. Terminator fame Michael Biehn is reportedly set to essay a bounty hunter, also Rosario Dawson might play Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars and Rebels series. Russia To Sell 100 Million Doses Of COVID-19 Vaccine To India

Russia's sovereign wealth fund has agreed to supply 100 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine, SputnikV, to Indian drug company Dr Reddy's Laboratories, the fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow speeds up plans to distribute its shot abroad.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 3:57 PM IST

MOSCOW: Russia’s sovereign wealth fund has agreed to supply 100 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik-V, to Indian drug company Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, the fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow speeds up plans to distribute its shot abroad.

The deal comes after the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reached agreements with Indian manufacturers to produce 300 million doses of the vaccine in India, which is a major consumer of Russian oil and arms.

Dr Reddy’s, one of India’s top pharmaceutical companies, will carry out Phase III clinical trials of the vaccine in India, pending regulatory approval, RDIF said in a statement.

Deliveries to India could begin in late 2020, it said, adding this was subject to the completion of trials and the vaccine’s registration by regulatory authorities in India.

Russia was the first country to license a novel coronavirus vaccine before large-scale Phase III trials were complete, stirring concern among scientists and doctors about the safety and efficacy of the shot.

The Phase I and II results had shown promise, G V Prasad, co-chairman of Dr Reddy’s, was cited in the RDIF statement as saying.

“Sputnik V vaccine could provide a credible option in our fight against COVID-19 in India,” he said.

There was no detail about the price of the vaccine but RDIF has said previously it was not aiming at making a profit, just covering costs.

The agreement comes as India’s coronavirus cases surged past 5 million on Wednesday, piling pressure on hospitals grappling with unreliable supplies of oxygen that they need to treat tens of thousands of critical patients.

India is only the second country in the world to cross the grim milestone and said this week it is considering granting an emergency authorisation for a vaccine, particularly for the elderly and people in high-risk workplaces.

The RDIF has already reached vaccine supply deals with Kazakhstan, Brazil and Mexico. It has also signed a memorandum with the Saudi Chemical company.

Russia has billed Sputnik-V as the first vaccine against the coronavirus to be registered in the world. Phase III trials, involving at least 40,000 people, were launched in Russia on Aug. 26 but have yet to be completed.

Safety car lights change wouldn't have stopped pile-up - Latifi
By:

Nicholas Latifi doubts that Formula 1 would have avoided the Tuscan GP restart pile-up even if the safety car lights had turned off earlier.

The Mugello race had to be red flagged when a number of cars, including Latifi’s Williams, were eliminated after crashing into each at the first safety car restart.

The incident was blamed on cars at the back of the pack accelerating to try to get a good getaway, while those ahead had to brake because race leader Valtteri Bottas held off on his restart until the last moment.

After the race, a number of drivers suggested that one of the trigger points for the incident was that the lights on the safety car had turned off so late, leaving Bottas with no option but to delay his restart until the last second.

But Latifi, who joined Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Giovinazzi in being eliminated in the chain reaction incident, thinks that the timing of the safety car lights had nothing to do with it.

“When the safety car lights go out too late when you're the leader, you always want it to come off as early as possible so you can just start controlling your pace,” said Latifi.

“At the same time, with Valtteri in the lead. I'd be very surprised if he went earlier if the safety car lights went off earlier. For me, he would have waited to still be as late as he did because you want to minimize the slipstream effect.

"So let's say even if the car lights went out at the beginning of the lap, and then he had a whole lap, I guarantee you he would probably still want to go at the same place, because that would have been the smart thing to do.”

Latifi believes that the way to avoid repeat incidents in the future is to perhaps make special arrangements regarding restart procedures at tracks which have the potential to be troublesome because of their layout.

“Going forward, I think maybe on a case by case basis on certain tracks, so mainly here, if we come back, and a track like Baku, maybe they just have to think about implementing something a bit different,” said the Canadian

“It's a difficult judgement to make. But definitely, I think there has to be, let's say, a bit more discipline from all the drivers in situations like that, too.

“Not be nose to tail in case something like that happens, but to keep a reasonable gap. Because I truly think the accident was caused by some drivers in the mid pack leaving too big a gap and accelerating flat out into that gap thinking: 'Oh, now I've got to get close because the race is about to restart.”

Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan give commercial vehicle customers more choices to finance their van | Automotive World

Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan give commercial vehicle customers more choices to finance their van

Ford Options complements existing finance products available for commercial vehicle customers, and enables them to renew, return or retain their vehicle at contract end

Ford Credit, the financing arm of Ford Motor Company, has introduced Ford Options and Ford Options Cashplan to give commercial vehicle purchasers another route to buy and finance a new Ford van.

Ford Options is available to both private individuals and business users, with customers choosing their deposit amount, loan length and annual mileage.

“Ford Options allows customers to drive a new Ford with a tailor-made financing package that suits their needs,” said Louise Clunie, lease and CV manager, Ford Credit Britain. “This type of flexible product has been the most popular finance plan for Ford passenger vehicles in the U.K. for more than 25 years, and we are delighted to now make it available across our award-winning commercial vehicle range too.”

Ford Options is a hire purchase agreement with three options at the end of contract: to renew, retain or return the vehicle. Customers pay a deposit of their choosing (to a maximum of 35 percent of the vehicle cost), followed by monthly payments over the length of the financing agreement. This can be for 24, 36 or 48 months, with an optional final payment due at the end.

Alternatively, Ford Options Cashplan adds interest and fees to the balance of the finance, to be paid as an advance payment rather than monthly payments, also with an optional final payment due at the end of the agreement.

“The majority of our business customers currently finance their Ford vehicles on traditional loan agreements. Ford Options goes further by offering customers ownership, a planned and controlled change cycle, and choice at the end of the contract. We can tailor their finance package to meet their acquisition needs, wants and desires, making Ford Options a more affordable option for many customers,” said Clunie.

Verdict

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 had lofty expectations to meet, in more ways than one, and they have actually managed to meet and even surpass most of those expectations. The battery life has been hugely improved, the addition of ANC is a welcome one, and the fit and comfort of the earbuds have also been enhanced since the dimensions of the earbuds have been trimmed down. Moreover, the promising sound quality usually found on Sennheiser audio products is here in all of its glory. The lack of wireless charging and the slight veiling of detail in the lower-treble are really the only missteps here. Despite these small issues, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is a truly remarkable pair of true wireless earphones. However, they are not for everyone, owing solely to the exorbitant price. Still, if you can afford to buy these stellar earphones, you will most likely be extremely pleased with your purchase.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 detailed review

The much-awaited Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 has finally arrived in the congested and highly cutthroat Indian audio market. These are the esteemed German company’s second stab at the true wireless in-ears form factor, with the original version having been released back in 2018. At the time, those were the very best true wireless earphones you could get your hands on. In fact, these earbuds even won the Digit Zero1 award for the best performing True Wireless in-ear headphones in 2019. However, the landscape of true wireless earphones has gone through tectonic alterations in the last two years with the introduction of several features and the development of the then-nascent technology. So, how does the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 stack up to premium true wireless offerings from Jabra, Apple, and numerous others in 2020? Let’s find out in our review.

Build and design

Sennheiser has largely retained the aesthetic of the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earphones in the new version, nevertheless, they do boast some functional changes in design and build. The earbuds’ size has been slashed down slightly, making them appear more streamlined overall. They now appear even more intelligibly luxurious featuring shiny metallic housings and a rounded, ergonomic shape. The Sennheiser logo is smacked right on the shiny metal housing. Don’t let the word ‘shiny’ here deter you from getting these earphones even if you’re not a fan of gloss and shine, the metallic housings aren’t at all ostentatious in appearance, in fact, they’re quite the opposite, they’re unmistakably premium and elegant.

The back houses the gold-plated charging connectors and LEDs that indicate the connectivity status. They are considerably bulkier than obnoxiously diminutive earphones such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus and the Jabra Elite 75t, however, the slight decrease in size has certainly made them more svelte overall.

The charging case’s look on the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless immediately floored us, with its gorgeous woven fabric finish. The Momentum True Wireless 2 sticks to the same tried-and-tested look, however, they have altered the colour to be more in line with the earphones themselves. The new case features a darker grey colour, which, in our opinion, elevates the design further.

The company will also be releasing a white variant later during the year. On the back of the charging case, you will find a USB-C port, an LED light and a tiny button, which when pressed, lights up the LED to relay the battery remaining on the charging case.

Upon opening the case, you will be greeted with the company’s name written in bold on the upper portion of the case. The bottom part houses the cavities for the earphones along with gold-plated magnetic pins that hold the earbuds secure in the case. The case opens and shuts with an audibly satisfying snap and the earbuds slot into the cavities in a similar, satisfying manner. Be assured that even if you drop the case, the earphones will hardly ever budge from their intended slot since the magnets within the case are pretty strong.

Overall, the build quality and design of the charging case and the earphones themselves will certainly match up to the lofty price of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. You’re paying a premium for these exorbitantly-priced earphones but you’re, without an iota of doubt, getting a premium and seemingly durable design and build. The only complaint we’d dish out is that the case, while aesthetically-pleasing, is not one of the most pocketable ones we’ve seen. They are slightly on the larger side and will definitely bulge out of most pockets.

Comfort and fit

One complaint the 2018 Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless received by quite a few reviewers and customers was regarding the overall comfort. The original Momentum True Wireless would start to cause some fatigue over time due to the pressure the relatively large earphones would apply on the ears. This issue, faced by numerous users, has largely been solved in the Momentum True Wireless 2. We wore the earphones for over 5 hours at a stretch with absolutely no comfort issues. We’re guessing the reduced dimensions of the new earphones have made them feel more comfortable over longer listening sessions. The earphones are also quite lightweight which can aid comfort and fit as well. The reviewer’s ears are on the smaller side, still, there were no apparent signs of overwhelming fatigue or discomfort.

In addition to being supremely comfortable over long listening sessions, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 also provides an exceeding snug and secure fit in the ear. The company has included four pairs of silicone eartips in the box in various sizes (XS, S, M, L). Ensure that you find the right size for your ear by trying out all the tips and see which gives you the most secure fit possible. Also, to get the full extent of the fit, you will need to slide the earphones into your ear and then twist them to sort of, lock them into place.
The reviewer found the fit to be absolutely phenomenal with the medium-sized eartips. The earphones didn’t budge at all during various activities such as walking around, running, eating, talking, and even stayed put when the reviewer shook her hair violently for no apparent reason. You can easily go running or gymming with these earphones if you manage to find the perfect fit, and having four ear tips to choose from certainly helps in that quest. The good seal also amped up the passive isolation. While the earphones do feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), the passive noise cancellation was enough to diminish background noise considerably. An additional pair of foam tips would be phenomenal, even though we’re more than happy with the fit already.

Features

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 come equipped with a cornucopia of features. The most prominent one being the induction of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that wasn’t present on the 2018 model. Since the Sony WF-1000XM3 earphones aren’t officially available in India, it makes the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 one of the very few true wireless earphones that come equipped with ANC, alongside the Apple AirPods Pro. It’s great to see Sennheiser offer this feature since the premium price tag calls for it. We’ll elaborate more on the quality of the ANC in the next section.

Alongside ANC, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 also comes with a Transparent Hearing mode which basically enhances ambient sound and plays it back to you. It works pretty well and can really come in handy when you want to listen to music but you also need to be aware of your surroundings and have a quick conversation without taking the earphones off. It works great if your music volume is slightly on the lower side, say about 40-50 per cent.

The metallic outer surface of each earphone also doubles as a touch control pad that can be used to carry out various functions. The default touch controls are a bit unintuitive. Pressing the left touchpad once pauses or plays music, a double-tap skips the track, while a triple-tap takes you to the previous track. Similarly, on the right side, pressing the touchpad once activates your voice assistant, a double-tap turns on Transparent Hearing, while a triple-tap activates ANC. Also, pressing and holding down the right and left touchpad increases and decreases the volume level respectively. These controls just felt a bit too unnatural and hard to memorise for us. Fortunately, the touchpad commands are completely customisable! You can alter all the touch commands via the Sennheiser Smart Control app. We love that Sennheiser has allowed the ability to switch around the touch controls since it something that is not commonly seen in true wireless earphones, but it is often something many users desire.

Speaking of the Smart Control app, it hosts a customisable EQ as well. You can tweak the sound signature to your preference and even save up to 9 different sound profiles. You can also toggle on or off a few other features such as ANC, Transparent Hearing, Auto Accept Call (automatically accepts an incoming call when the right earbud is taken out of the case), Smart pause, and Sidetone.

Smart pause automatically pauses music or media when one earbud is taken out of the ear. It also auto-plays the music when the earphone is inserted back into the ear. The on-ear detection is likely accomplished by employing optical sensors and is a pretty nifty feature. You can easily pause/play music on the fly when you simply want to have a conversation or do something else. Instead of fumbling around to tap the touchpad to pause, you can simply enable this feature to make it more intuitive. Sidetone, on the other hand, gives you an audible feedback of your own voice when on a phone call. This prevents users from talking too loud when they’re on a call.

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 comes equipped with the latest Bluetooth v5.1. The wireless transmission range of the earphones is 10m or 33 feet, as per the company. This is, of course, achieved barring any obstacles, which will essentially reduce the range. We noticed that the connection was quite solid throughout our usage, with absolutely no lags and skips in the audio. The connectivity was also maintained at a distance with a wall or two in between, so it’s safe to say you won’t have any pressing complaints about the Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, audio codecs such as AAC and aptX are also supported.

Unfortunately, you can only connect to only one device at a time with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. So, if you’re used to using your earphones interchangeably on your smartphone and laptop/PC, you’ll be disappointed since you have to disconnect from the currently connected device to connect to another one.

Battery life is another area where the original Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless got some flak. Other than some odd battery drain issues, the battery life itself on the older version was lacklustre, coming in at a total of a mere 12 hours of battery life (4 hours on the buds + 8 hours from the charging case). This time around, Sennheiser has more than doubled the battery life on the Momentum True Wireless 2 compared to its predecessor. You now get a total of approximately 28 hours of battery life, with 7 hours on the buds and 3 additional charges (21 hours) via the case. We’ll elaborate more on battery life in the next section.

The earphones also sport an IPX4 rating which means they can easily withstand light splashes and sweat, making them usable during intense sweat-inducing workouts and even in light rainfall. Also, they come with a USB Type-C charging cable which charges the case pretty rapidly. The one feature that the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 sorely lacks is wireless charging. Although it is not an extremely essential feature, it is pretty useful for those who already use wireless chargers at home or those who have smartphones equipped with reverse charging. We were quite disappointed to see Sennheiser give this feature a skip since the premium price tag calls for it, seeing that even relatively affordable true wireless earphones such as the Noise Shots XO and the Realme Buds Air have included wireless charging for the case.

Performance

The biggest strength of the original Momentum True Wireless earphones was definitely the stellar sound quality. With the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2, despite the addition of more features, the sound quality is still very much the highlight. The Momentum True Wireless 2 pack the same 7mm dynamic drivers as the originals did, however, there are some subtle changes and even improvements to the sound quality that were probably achieved via chip and software upgrades over their predecessor.

Let’s start with the bass response, which is absolutely sublime on these earphones. The bass is rich, textured and also punchy. Each bass thump has sufficient drive and enthusiasm but it also features oodles of detail. The Momentum True Wireless 2 has an astounding control over the quality of the bass which never strays away from prioritising quality over raw power. In Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, the bass guitar sounds taut, well-controlled and textured. The lows are also extremely well-produced and detailed. We didn’t hear any harshness in this frequency even at high volume levels, which is impressive. Listening to Rewind by Kelala, we were surprised to hear the sheer drive and intensity in the lows, which is rare in true wireless earbuds. The bass response and the lows bring a soothing warmth and fullness to tracks.

The mid accuracy on these earphones is also pretty remarkable. Lead instruments and vocals in these frequencies sound divine and natural, and the Momentum True Wireless 2 is able to extract absurd amounts of detail in this frequency range, with even slight breaths being clearly audible. It brings a certain rawness to vocal-centric tracks which we really appreciated.

The highs on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are definitely more subtle and controlled compared to the likes of the Apple AirPods. While overall the highs seem pretty detailed and well-produced, there’s a higher-than-usual drop in the lower-treble range that sometimes compromises a bit of detail, especially in female vocals. Sennheiser audio products usually have a characteristic drop in a part of the high frequencies which can be jarring to the human ear, however, this time around it seems that they have dropped the reproduction of this frequency point even more than usual which has compromised a bit of detail here. Nevertheless, it is still something most ears won’t be able to pick up that easily. If you do and it does bother you, you can always bump up the lower-treble range slightly via the customisable EQ on the app.

The soundstage is excellent on these earphones, possibly the best we’ve tested on true wireless earphones so far. The stage is abundantly wide and surprisingly, even features some height to it. The imaging on these earphones is yet again, stellar and in tracks such as Popular Monster by Falling in Reverse, that features a chaotic mess of instruments, you can still distinctly tell most of them apart.

Coming to the battery life, it has definitely improved in comparison to its predecessor. In our test the earphones did manage to stay powered on for about 7 hours continuously, however, this is without ANC turned on. With ANC, the earbuds will only last you about 4.5 hours with ANC turned on the whole time, as per our tests. Still, this stacks up pretty well since the AirPods Pro also last about 5 hours with ANC turned on. You also have an additional 3 charges (21 hours) of battery life on the case itself which is a massive improvement over the 8 hours on the previous model.

Powered by Bluetooth v5.1, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 features almost no tangible latency when playing games or streaming shows. Also, the sound is immersive and dynamic when watching films or TV series, especially action ones. The microphone quality on the earphones is also quite good. The caller on the other end could hear everything we said quite clearly and the sounds in our background were sufficiently filtered out of the conversation. Dictating a paragraph on Google Notes also showed that the microphone was able to pick up most of what we were saying accurately.

Now, let’s talk about the quality of the Active Noise Cancellation on the Momentum True Wireless 2. While these earphones certainly cannot reproduce the level of ANC an over-ear pair of headphones can provide, they do diminish background sounds significantly when ANC is active. The Momentum True Wireless 2 did a stellar job at drowning out constant sounds and chatter in the background such as the hum of the AC and even some voices. It does better at cutting out low rumbles in comparison to higher-frequency sounds such as typing on a mechanical keyboard. Nevertheless, it still muffles high-frequency sounds to an acceptable degree. They do offer much better ANC than the 1More True Wireless ANC earphones we reviewed in the past.

Bottomline

His brother Bob, who replaced him in the band, shared the tragic news on Facebook, saying his brother had died in 'one of those stupid ladder accidents'.

In his heartfelt tribute, he opened up about admiring his brother who was a 'fabulous guitarist'.

'Quite honestly this is just a f***ing tragedy especially for Dianna and the girls. (and in lockdown!)

Verdict

The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus isn't a particularly good phone. It doesn't match up to its competition, and there are better phones out there, including the Coolpad Note 3 and Meizu M2 Note.

Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus detailed review

Not many smartphones offer 5-inch or smaller displays, in the sub-10k segment today. Chances are, you might be reading this review on a larger display as well. However, many of us would like to go back to a smaller screen, I know I do. So, the Lenovo K5 Plus, with its 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, and attractive design seems to be a good proposition. On paper, it seems like a good budget phone. It takes on the likes of the Coolpad Note 3 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (16GB), and tries to incorporate features from both phones.

Design and Build
The Lenovo K5 Plus has a removable metal back, which is also a first for this price bracket. For this, Lenovo has put a thin metal sheet on a plastic removable back. This makes for a good looking smartphone, which feels good to hold as well. The chrome polish on the device also adds to the whole design. It is solidly built, but the metal finish does feel a tad slippery in your hand.

The display on the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is somewhat of a disappointment though. The 5 inch 1080p panel isn’t what you call bad, but we’ve seen much better, even in this price range. The colour saturation is well balanced and the viewing angles are also quite good. In addition, the touch response is decent, but you can feel the lack of Gorilla Glass here. Even the sunlight visibility isn’t up to the mark, and phones like the Meizu M2 Note, Coolpad Note 3 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, have much better displays.

Display and UI
While the smaller display has allowed Lenovo to make a compact phone, the display itself lacks quality. Further, Lenovo’s Vibe UI a big part of the 2GB of RAM on the device and doesn’t really add to the feature set. It has a theme manager with just six themes, about half a dozen apps come pre-loaded, many of which can be uninstalled. When we installed our regular apps for testing the phone, it started showing considerable lags. The phone runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

The performance of the phone wasn’t great either. The Snapdragon 616 is slightly improved from the 615, but manages heat much better. We’ve seen similar performance from phones like the Moto G Turbo, which are powered by the older processor. The Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus looks good on paper, but as we saw with the Honor 5X, this isn’t really the ideal performer either.

Performance
The gaming experience on the K5 Plus isn’t as good as the Coolpad Note 3, even though the two phones are similarly powered (despite different SoCs). The K5 Plus heats up after about half an hour of gaming, and the SoC seems to be throttled pretty easily. Using it for day-to-day tasks, such as browsing or streaming videos, we found occasional lags on the smartphone.

On the other hand, the audio performance  is simply the best in this category. There are two Dolby Atmos enabled speakers at the back, which are quite loud for a phone in the sub-10k price bracket. Moreover, the sound quality is really good when you’re listening to audio via headphones. The Dolby software improves the bass, which many users will like and the mids are clearer than others when listening to music via headphones.

That said, the rear speakers do get muffled if the device is put back down, which will be most of the times.

Battery
Moving on, the battery life on the Vibe K5 Plus is another area that needs improvement. On the Geekbench 3 battery test, the phone lasts for about 5.5 hours, which is outright poor. Competitors like the Coolpad Note 3, can run for over 10 hours. During our review period, we had to charge the phone at least twice a day.

Camera
Lastly, the camera on the Lenovo K5 Plus is not as good as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, which has a 16MP rear sensor and much faster overall operation. However, it is still comparable to the likes of the Coolpad Note 3 and the Meizu M2 Note.

The 13MP rear shooter on the phone can capture good images in normal lighting conditions. The contrast levels are decent and the colour reproduction is quite accurate. The auto-focus and shutter response of the phone aren’t the fastest in its price bracket and is at par with the Coolpad Note 3 and the Meizu M2 Note. While Lenovo has endeavoured to reduce the noise levels in low light conditions, it’s not the best. It’s another area where the Redmi Note 3 outperforms this phone.

To make it simpler, the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus can take images as good as the Coolpad Note 3 or Meizu M2 Note, but isn’t at fast. On the other hand, it’s inferior in every way to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

The front-facing camera takes decent selfies, which can be further tweaked using the Beautify toggle. The camera app is pretty simple, but it does feature filters like emboss, mono, sepia, etc.

Bottomline
To sum up, it is quite evident that the Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is not a particularly good phone. While the display and camera are still acceptable, the battery life and performance are disappointing. It lags marginally behind phones like the Meizu M2 Note and the Coolpad Note 3, and is no match to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

Zara Owner Inditex Says Store Sales Recovering As It Returns To Profit

The owner of fashion retailer Zara, Inditex, returned to quarterly profit in the three months from May to July despite a 31% fall in sales as the coronavirus crisis kept consumers away from city centre shopping districts.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:54 PM IST

MADRID: The owner of fashion retailer Zara, Inditex, returned to quarterly profit in the three months from May to July despite a 31% fall in sales as the coronavirus crisis kept consumers away from city centre shopping districts.

Inditex, which also owns the Massimo Dutti and Bershka brands, said 98% of its stores had reopened and that current trade showed a progressive return to normality with online sales growing sharply and store sales recovering.

In the current quarter, sales in store and online from Aug. 1 to Sept. 6 at constant exchange rates were on an improving trend, though still down 11% from a year earlier.

Inditex shares rose 5% on Wednesday morning, adding to gains booked on Tuesday after Swedish rival H&M beat quarterly profit forecasts.

Shoppers have started to buy fashion again since stores reopened following shutdowns. JP Morgan estimates continental Europe fashion sales were down 15% in July on average compared to May’s 42% drop.

Inditex reported a second-quarter net profit of 214 million euros ($253 million), beating the 96 million euro mean forecast from Refinitiv’s SmartEstimate model, which is weighted towards more recent estimates and higher-ranked analysts.

It saw a 74% jump in online sales in the first half, a trend seen at apparel retailers worldwide, as shoppers bought from home with many stores closed and movement restrictions in place.

In a sign of how apparel spending has switched to more comfortable styles with many working from home and parties cancelled, Zara’s app showed autumn looks with wide trousers and flat shoes on models climbing fences and riding bikes.

For the first half, it reported a net loss of 195 million euros on sales down 37%.

It said it would have reported a profit had it not booked a 308 million euro charge related to its integration of its store and online platforms.

($1 = 0.8445 euros)

Experts Cite 'Crimes Against Humanity' In Maduro's Venezuela

Independent experts commissioned by the U.N.s top human rights body have alleged the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro committed crimes against humanity.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:45 PM IST

GENEVA: Independent experts commissioned by the U.N.s top human rights body have alleged the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro committed crimes against humanity.

The experts issued a scathing, in-depth report on Wednesday that said the people responsible for crimes that include extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions and torture must be held to account, in part to ensure they don’t happen again.

The report was commissioned last year by the 47-member-state Human Rights Council, which has the backing of the United Nations,

The findings, based on nearly 3,000 cases that were investigated or examined, concluded that Maduro and his defense and interior ministers were aware of crimes committed by security forces and intelligence agencies. It further alleged that high-level authorities had both power and oversight over the forces and agencies, making the top officials responsible.

The report appeared likely to fan international and domestic criticism of Maduros government, which has overseen a country in tatters with runaway inflation, a violent crackdown and an exodus of millions of Venezuelans who have fled to neighboring countries to escape the turmoil since he took power in 2013.
