India receives 7% higher rainfall; sowing up 5.7% annually: CRISIL

As per the report, advancement in sowing has led to buoyant demand for agricultural inputs in the first quarter of this fiscal, albeit on a low base

June saw a 44% jump in sowing over a low base of 2019

At a time when Indian economy faces its worst crisis due to coronavirus-led lockdown, "above normal" monsoon is likely to provide some respite to agriculture sector, which contributes nearly 17 per cent of India's GDP and provides jobs to around 50 per cent of population. A report by CRISIL Research on Wednesday said that monsoon rains were 7 per cent above average this year, so far the best in five years, which led to 5.7 per cent year-on-year jump in sowing of crops.

As per the report, advancement in sowing has led to buoyant demand for agricultural inputs in the first quarter of this fiscal, albeit on a low base. June saw a 44 per cent jump in sowing over a low base of 2019, when a 19 per cent deficient monsoon had delayed kharif sowing. Though sowing growth has tapered with the kharif season's progress, but it is still expected to be 4-5 per cent higher on-year for the full season, it said.

"This year, southwest monsoon has covered majority of Indian states 12 days ahead of normal. Early arrival and good spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall advanced sowing across crops and states," Crisil said in its report.

The report said that increase in crop acreage and higher productivity will lead to a bumper kharif crop output, up 5-7 per cent on year-on-year basis.

CRISIL, in its last report in August, had forecasted a 2-3 per cent rise in sown area on-year at around 109 million hectares for kharif season 2020. It expected productivity to rise by 2-3 per cent over a low base of 2019, given the adequate water availability for critical growth stages. It estimated kharif output to rise 5-6 per cent on-year to a record, which would put downward pressure on prices of various commodities.

Meanwhile, prices and profitability of vegetables are also likely to drop over a high base of 2019.

According to CRISIL, effective implementation of central and state government schemes will further support farmer incomes.

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which seeks to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses and onion, with opposition parties describing the measure as anti-farmer and NDA ally Shiromani Akali Dal opposing changes in the law. The amendment is aimed at transforming the farm sector and raising farmers' income, the government has said.

With the amendments, RBI will be able undertake a scheme of amalgamation of a bank without placing it under moratorium. Earlier, if a bank was placed under moratorium, it not only limited withdrawals by depositors, but also disrupted a bank’s lending operations.

The cooperative banks will also be allowed to raise money via public issue and private placement, of equity or preference shares as well as unsecured debentures, with the central’s bank’s nod. Currently, access to capital for cooperative banks is limited.

In March, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled in the Lok Sabha the amendments to the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. However, due to the outbreak of the covid-19, the Parliament could not approve the changes. Thereafter, on June 26, an ordinance was promulgated.

BMW cars to use new software to 'feel' road conditions

TEL AVIV -- Software from Israel's Tactile Mobility will be embedded into the BMW's next-generation vehicles beginning in 2021.

The collaboration will equip the vehicles with the ability to analyze the road surface attributes under their tires, enabling detection of road conditions.

Tactile Mobility develops software that uses a vehicle's non-visual sensors, including wheel speed, wheel angle, RPM and gear position to help smart and autonomous vehicles "feel" vehicle-road dynamics and road conditions.

In October, Tactile Mobility said it had secured $9 million in funding from a group of investors that included Porsche.

In May, the sports-car maker said it would use Tactile Mobility's technology in its future vehicles.

The cooperation between BMW and Tactile Mobility began through the BMW Startup Garage, the venture client unit of the BMW Group.

Uttarakhand Hospital Issues Fake Covid-Free Certificates, Probe Ordered

The probe will seek to find out for how long the racket was going on at the hospital.

Rishikesh:

A government hospital in Uttarakhand allegedly issued OPD slips to people certifying that they have no symptoms of COVID-19, without conducting an RT-PCR test, prompting the administration to launch an inquiry into the matter.

Mostly such fake certificates were issued in violation of ICMR guidelines to migrant workers who wanted to go to other districts in search of work.

The matter came to light on Wednesday at SPS Government Hospital, Rishikesh where a doctor was doing this for money, officials at the hospital said requesting anonymity.

They also produced a sample of one such OPD slip issued by the doctor bearing his signature and the stamp of the hospital as a proof.

When contacted Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash on Wednesday said a detailed enquiry is being ordered into the matter.

The probe will seek to find out for how long the racket was going on at the hospital and how many doctors were involved in it, he said.

Chief Medical Superintendent NS Tomar said as per the guidelines of the Centre and the Indian Council of Medical Research an RT-PCR test alone can certify whether or not a person is suffering from COVID-19.

After the meeting, temple officials along with the police examined the silver chariot at the temple premises. It was then reported that statues of lions were not found.

The chariot was used during the Telugu New Year Ugadi festival last year but the celebrations were cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The chariot had been kept covered and not used ever since.

"The silver chariot has been kept in Mallikarjuna Mahamandapam for the last 18 months. How many lions are there in it? Have they been given for repairs or are they in the locker? We have to examine these issues and will come to a conclusion. There is an insurance facility for silver and gold items and vehicles in the temple." Executive Officer of the Temple Suresh Babu told the media.

The temple authorities refused to open the cover of the chariot and show it to the media. However, sources said the state's BJP unit is taking the issue very seriously. BJP president Somu Veerraju will be meeting the Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan today to complain and will seek detailed enquiry on the issue.
