Ex-MLA Pudi Mangapathi Rao dead

Former MLA Pudi Mangapathi Rao died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city on Wednesday.

Mangapathi Rao created ripples in political circles by winning from the Uttarapalli Assembly constituency in Vizianagaram district in 2004 on a Congress ticket and defeating five-time TDP MLA and former Minister Kolla Appala Naidu.

He hoped to contest from Madugula constituency following the reorganisation of Assembly constituencies as part of a delimitation exercise, but was denied a Congress ticket. He later joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Verdict

With the WD Black SN750 we have an excellent example of how much performance improvement the software along can bring to the table. It’s certainly odd that WD did not simply issue these firmware changes for the older SN700 since it too could have easily benefitted from the performance boost and it would have been a very consumer friendly move as well. The heatsink seems to be the only bone of contention in this case as it clearly isn’t a well-thought design. Thankfully, we can remove the heatsink from the unit without voiding the warranty. Also, the 1 SKU retails for Rs.23,999 which makes the SN750 a very competitive pricing for the performance as well as the capacity with the cost-per-GB working out to be just Rs.23.44.

WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD 1 TB detailed review

The WD SN750 is the third iteration of the WD Black lineup of M.2 SSDs. Last year, we saw the 2018 WD Black SSDs which changed things up for WD and positioned the drive as an enthusiast drive. This was a marked improvement over the first generation of WD SSDs which couldn’t differentiate itself from the hundreds of other SSDs in the market. This was primarily due to the new proprietary controller that showcased WD’s vertical integration. With the SN750, we should see another high-performer given that they’ve stuck with the same proprietary controller and even the same 64-layer 3D TLC NAND. We are probably, looking at a revision of the controller along with improved firmware in this new SN750 package. The one thing that stands out with the SN750 is the massive EKWB heatsink that it comes with. There are also variants available without the heatsink.

WD Black SN750 NVMe SSD 1 TB Specifications

WD didn’t share any of the controller specifications. By comparing the spec sheets side-by-side we can see that practically all the specs are the same except for the read and write characteristics. This would indicate that the bulk of the improvements with this SKU lie in the firmware. The rated Seq. read speeds have improved by 70 MBps and the rated Seq. write speeds have gone up by 200 MBps. Random read and write IOPS figures also show incremental improvements.

The 2018 WD Black was only available in 250GB/500GB/1TB variants whereas the 2019 SN750 now has a 2TB option as well. As per the rated specifications, the 1 TB SKU, which is what we have as well, seems to be the best performer of the lot. Let’s take a look at the specifications of this particular SKU.

Build and Design

The heatsink is the first thing you notice about the WD Black SN750. The need of a heatsink has often been debated in the analyst circles and the answer lies in how and where the SSD is installed. If there’s plenty of incidental air-flow then the threshold for the thermal throttling is rarely attained by most users, if not then there is a very realistic possibility of the SSD throttling. You might want to check the clearance of the WD Black before installing it on your motherboard as it is quite a tall heatsink. The SSD stands 8.10 mm tall with the heatsink installed and there’s also the fact that once it is installed, it will sit a little higher on the motherboard as the M.2 port has a little bit of clearance underneath it.

WD Black SN750 1 TB

As a result, if your M.2 slot sits right beneath the graphics card, then it might apply some pressure if the graphics card sags in its slot. A graphics card without a fancy shroud should ideally not make any contact once installed but we’ve seen some graphics cards wherein a heatpipe from the heatsink assembly juts out from the bottom of the card a little. This intersects with the space wherein the SSD is installed. In fact, motherboard manufacturers have already solved this problem by providing SSD heatsinks which are supported by separate mounts which prevent any pressure from being transferred onto the SSD.

WD Black SN750 SSD 1 TB

The heatsink wraps around the SSD like what you see in the above image. So you not only have the added height but also a slight addition to the width. The two put together are actually problematic for certain motherboards. WD is addressing this by putting out a compatibility list on their website highlighting which boards are compatible and which aren’t along with which boards would require the heatsink to be removed before it can be installed.

Lastly, the heatsink is a massive slab of aluminium with v-shaped grooves cut into it. While this is undoubtedly stylish and merges with the aesthetic of most motherboard designs, it’s not as effective as a proper fin-stack heatsink but given the application scenario, it seems appropriate.

Once you take the label off, the underlying PCB is indistinguishable from the 2018 WD Black SSD. It’s a single sided PCB with the controller, NAND and RAM being the same. So WD hasn’t changed anything at all with the SN750.

WD Black SN750 1 TB SSD

Overall, the WD Black SN750 keeps the configuration the same but has a new heatsink which seems to be a concern when paired with some motherboards.

Performance

You might be wondering if there will be a performance difference if the controller as well as NAND chips are kept the same, and the firmware is the key differentiator. You’d be surprised with what all can be achieved with just software/firmware tweaks. When we take a look at CrystalDiskMark, which is a very simple and synthetic benchmark that showcases the raw read and write speeds, you don’t see a drastic improvement. CrystalDiskMark can hardly bring out the nuances of firmware improvements but we have it anyway since it happens to be popular. The performance numbers seem close to the spec sheet i.e. around the 3470 MBps mark for read speeds and 2800 MBps write speeds. There’s not much to explore here.

Moving on to analysing the driver performance post conditioning, we start to see the  differences between the WD Black 2018 (SN700) and WD SN750 start to emerge.

Sequential Read Performance
The WD SN750 scores more than the WD Black SN700 in our sustained 128K read tests by a considerable margin of approximately 360 MBps. This brings it very close to the Intel 900p and the Corsair MP510 which are both excellent performers in their own right. Samsung’s 970 EVO is comparable but it should be noted that our 970 EVO was a 512 GB SKU and not a 1 TB SKU as all the other drives that we test are.

Sequential Write Performance
Even in the sequential write performance test we find the WD750 to show an improvement of about 480 MBps which is quite sizeable as well. It turns out the firmware from WD is indeed a better performer in all the parameters that matter the most.

SSD performance isn’t just about pure read speeds or write speeds anymore. All new controllers are quite capable of handling synthetic loads quite easily leading to metrics which aren’t indicative of real world performance. So we’re going to have a look at latency timings for each operation across varying queue depths.

Israel, UAE And Bahrain Sign Abraham Accord; Trump Says

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for the signing of the historic Abraham Accord, which is the first Arab-Israeli peace deal in 26 years. "We are here this afternoon to change the course of history. After decades of division and conflict we mark the dawn of a new Middle East," Trump said, moments before the accord was signed at the South Lawns of the White House.

Jha Washington, Sep 15: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for the signing of the historic Abraham Accord, which is the first Arab-Israeli peace deal in 26 years. “We are here this afternoon to change the course of history. After decades of division and conflict we mark the dawn of a new Middle East,” Trump said, moments before the accord was signed at the South Lawns of the White House.

The UAE was represented by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and Bahrain by Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani. The Arab Accord — essentially bilateral agreements with Israel — does not mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Thanks to the great courage of the leaders of these three countries we take a major stride towards a future in which people of all faiths and backgrounds live together in peace and prosperity,” Trump said.

The president pointed out that these were the only two peace deals between Israel and the Arab States in more than a quarter of a century. Egypt was the first Arab State to sign a peace deal with Israel in 1979. Jordon signed a peace pact in 1994. “Now we have achieved two in a single month and there are more to follow,” Trump said.

As per the agreements, the UAE and Bahrain will establish embassies, exchange ambassadors, cooperate and work together with Israel across a range of sectors, including tourism, trade, healthcare and security. “They are friends. The Abraham Accords also open the door for Muslims around the world to visit the historic sites in Israel and to peacefully pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam,” Trump said, amidst applause and cheer from more than 200 invited guests. Together these agreements will serve as the foundation for comprehensive peace across the entire region, Trump said.

Netanyahu described the accord as a “pivot of history”, heralding a new dawn. “For thousands of years the Jewish people have prayed for peace. For decades, the Jewish state has prayed for peace and this is why today we are filled with such profound gratitude,” he said. “You have heard from the president that he has already lined up more and more countries. This was unimaginable a few years ago. But with resolve, determination, a fresh look at the way peace is done, this is being achieved,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu said Israel is eager to invest in a future of prosperity, and peace. “We’ve already begun to cooperate on combating coronavirus and I am sure that together we can find solutions to many of the problems that afflict our region and beyond,” he said.

Foreign Minister Zayed said the UAE is witnessing a change in the Middle-East, one that gives hope around the world. “We are witnessing today a new trend that will create a better path for the Middle-East,” he said.

“This peace accord which is a historic achievement for the United States of America, the state of Israel and the United Arab Emirates will continue to have a positive impact as we believe that its reverberations will be reflected on the entire region, every option other than peace would signify destruction, poverty, and human suffering,” he said. This new vision which is beginning to take shape as we meet today for the future of the region for love, youthful energy is not a slogan that we raise for political gain. Everyone looks forward to creating a more stable prosperous and secure future,” the minister said.

Foreign Minister Zayani said peace between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the State of Israel is a step on the road to genuine and lasting security and prosperity. For too long the Middle East has been set back by conflict and mistrust causing uncontrolled destruction and thwarting the potential of generations of our best and brightest young people. Now I am convinced we have the opportunity to change that, said the minister from Bahrain. Soon after the signing, the White House, in a statement, said the deal will strengthen peace in the region, giving Muslims increased access to the Al Aqsa Mosque. This will counter the extremists who use the false narrative that the Al Aqsa Mosque is under attack and that Muslims cannot pray at this holy site, it said.

President Trump helped broker the historic agreement between the UAE and Israel to normalise relations in August. Last week, Trump announced that Bahrain had also reached a deal with Israel to normalise relations. The deal between the UAE and Israel represented a significant breakthrough in diplomatic relations between the two nations as the Trump administration works to facilitate cooperation between Arab nations and Israel. Trump, seeking re-election in the November 3 presidential election against his Democratic Party rival, Joe Biden, is hoping that the two major diplomatic deals would help him in the polls.

Online rummy is rapidly spreading its tentacles by luring all sections, more particularly youths

Highlights
  • The online real money gaming industry is estimated at Rs 2,200 crore
  • The online real money gaming industry will touch Rs 12,000 crore by 2023
  • There are four online rummy operators accredited by The Rummy Federation

BJP leader K C Ramamurthy on Tuesday demanded in the Rajya Sabha that the government ban online rummy saying many people have become addicted to it, particularly in south India.

There are four online accredited rummy operators, Ace2Three, Junglee Rummy, Rummy Circle, and Rummy Passion, accredited by The Rummy Federation, he said.

"Sir, it is a misnomer that rummy is a game of skill. It is gambling and betting money through rummy in the greed of getting more is illegal as it ruins families financially and otherwise.  It is unfortunate that many have become addicts, particularly in south India," he said during his special mention in the Upper House.

Online rummy is rapidly spreading its tentacles by luring all sections, more particularly youths, with attractive advertisements and promotions assuring lucrative returns which are totally false, he said.

Looking at these advertisements, youngsters, after losing money, resort to criminal and other activities to carry on with this addiction. Parents are worried about the future of their loved ones, he added.

Citing a KPMG report, the BJP leader said that the online real money gaming industry is estimated at Rs. 2,200 crore and is growing at 30 percent annually and will touch Rs. 12,000 crore by 2023.

"I don''t see any industry that can grow at this pace in the world, including Apple, Amazon, etc. This clearly indicates the rapidity with which online real money gaming, which includes rummy, is spreading," he said.

The advertisements and endorsement to online rummy, be it in print or electronic media, by renowned celebrities, including cricketers like MS Dhoni and film stars, clearly indicate how rummy is gaining popularity, he said.

"In view of the above, I request the government of India to immediately declare online rummy as illegal and ban the same forthwith," he added.

Philippines Says Engaging Western Pharma Firms, Despite Duterte Anger

MANILA: The Philippines continues to negotiate supply deals with a wide range of COVID-19 vaccine makers, its health ministry said on Wednesday, despite its president scolding Western firms and saying he wanted Chinese and Russian vaccines.

The Philippines, which has the most infections and second highest number of deaths in Southeast Asia, is potentially a large market for vaccine makers with its population of 107 million.

“We are still continuously negotiating,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told Reuters in a text message. “No vaccine manufacturers have ‘formally’ asked for pre-payment, though there have been insinuations during the discussions.”

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday lashed out at Western vaccine manufacturers for seeking advance payment or a reservation fee for vaccines that are still under clinical trials.

He pledged to prioritise Russia or China, countries that he frequently praises during his trademark verbal tirades at the West.

His government has talked to a number of potential vaccine suppliers, including those of Russia and China plus U.S. drugmaker Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc. It plans to meet Australian biotech giant CSL Ltd.

A Philippine procurement law forbids payment of goods well ahead of delivery and before a product’s specifications are finalised, putting the country at a disadvantage amid expected high global vaccine demand. The Philippines has recorded nearly 270,000 coronavirus infections and over 4,600 deaths.

In contrast, countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have committed to buy hundreds of millions of doses even as vaccines are still under late-stage trials.

The Philippines has joined a World Health Organization-led vaccine trials and allocation plan and is promoting itself as a site for pharma firms’ phase 3 trials, Vergeire said.

“We are doing all efforts to put us in a position to access these vaccines,” Vergeire told a regular news conference.

Verdict

For a price point of about 13K, you get a soundbar with pretty good sound output. But the connectivity glitches make us question the soundbars longevity and durability. Because of the buggy performance, you are better off looking at alternatives for a soundbar setup around 15K.

Blaupunkt SBWL03 Soundbar detailed review

Budget TVs today come with a host of options like HDMI ARC, 4K HDR playback and some smart capabilities. One of the compromises made to keep the price of these TVs low is the quality of audio output. Most budget TVs today pack in 20W of sound output which sound average at best. It gets the job done for everyday TV viewing but for an immersive gaming or movie watching experience, you need a dedicated sound system. The lacklustre sound experience from TV speakers has given birth to soundbars.

In the past few years, advances in technology have made it so that soundbars can offer stiff competition to entry-level home theatres with advantages such as ease of setup and installation along with good sound output. We have seen soundbars priced around Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 offer good sound output in the entry-level segment. But to get an immersive experience a consumer would need to spend about Rs 20,000. Today we have with us the Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar. It is priced at Rs 13,990 and brings with it connectivity like HDMI ARC, Bluetooth, optical, 3.5mm and USB. it also comes with a wireless subwoofer. Is it a worthy entry-level soundbar?

What’s in the box of the Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar

In the box, you get the soundbar, subwoofer and 2 aux cables (one 3.5mm at both ends and the other, RCA to 3.5mm). You also get the remote control and manual. The power cables are attached to the Subwoofer and the soundbar.

Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar Build And Design

The Blaupunkt SBWL-03 has a simple traditional soundbar design. It’s made of plastic with a glossy finish on the top of the soundbar. The front has a textured wavy plastic design and some may like it as it will stand out in a traditional home entertainment setup. Below the logo of the soundbar, we have an LED indicator to show you the sound preset, the current source, etc. I wish this were a little dimmer or would automatically go off after some time as its constant visibility can get distracting, especially if you watch content in a pitch dark room. The power button also doubles up as a source select button which is nice in case you lose the remote control.

The front grill has a wavy textured design to it.

The soundbar itself is very light and is almost as long as a 50-inch TV making it ideal for 50 to 65-inch setups. The power cord is attached to the soundbar and is not user-replaceable. On the right of the soundbar, we have the physical controls which include a volume rocker and a power button. The buttons have a distinct click to them when pressed and honestly feel a little cheap. There are no rubber feet at the bottom of the soundbar to help hold it in place on a table and this is a bummer.

Moving over to the subwoofer, it is tall and slim with the duct on the upper side of the subwoofer. It has a matte finish which I like and when light shines on the subwoofer, it looks a little textured which is nice. The subwoofer has no connectivity options except for the power cable which is attached and not user-replaceable. The soundbar and subwoofer connect wirelessly to each other when switched on.

Overall, even though the soundbar is light, it is decently built. It doesn’t have rubber feet to hold it in place on the table which is a downer. The subwoofer feels well built.

Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar Ports And Connectivity

Speaking of connectivity options, the speaker has one HDMI ARC port, one Optical in, one USB port, Bluetooth and one AUX-In. The USB port is one the side while the rest of the connectivity options are at the back in a little cavity. There is no HDMI passthrough on the bar, but I think at this price point, asking for HDMI passthrough is wishful thinking. The soundbar also comes with a remote control in the box.

The HDMI port, AUX port and optical port are in a cavity at the back of the soundbar

A good thing is that the soundbar comes with 2 AUX cables, one 3.5mm at both ends and the other 2.1 aux cable (RCA to AUX) in the box ensuring you are ready for some form of connectivity when you unbox the speaker. For optical and HDMI ARC connectivity, you will have to fend for a cable yourself.

Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Remote Control

Speaking of the remote control, it is all plastic and feels quite cheap. The buttons are rubbery and have a fairly decent grip to them but it is hard to imagine this remote control surviving more than a few drops, considering its plastic construction. It runs on two AAA batteries and offers playback controls for Bluetooth and USB connectivity, four different EQ presets, treble, bass and volume controls and the ability to change inputs. Whatever you do on the remote control is reflected on the LED display on the soundbar.

The remote control feels plasticky and cheap.

Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Setup

Setting up the soundbar is extremely easy. Place the soundbar under the TV, place the subwoofer in a corner (the soundbar and the sub shouldn’t be more than 30 feet apart), connect both to a power supply, and connect it to your TV and you are good to go. The setup shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes. There is a blue light that blinks at the back of the subwoofer when powered on for the first time and becomes a constant blue light when the soundbar is switched on.

The USB port and the physical controls are on the side of the Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar.

Blaupunkt SBWL-03 Performance

This is where it gets tricky, so let’s get the good stuff out of the way. The soundbar can get loud, really loud. On the display, the volume can go up to 32 at its maximum and I was more than happy leaving it between 15 and 25 depending on the input method used to get an enjoyable experience. However, only the line in (aux port) and the Optical connection gave a consistently good performance with HDMI and Bluetooth giving issues.

The soundbar display can only show two characters.

When connected to the TV via HDMI, there was a constant audio drop, until the audio wasn’t audible anymore. I checked and changed the cables as well to eliminate a cable issue and my very own YAMAHA YAS-209 did not show these problems with the same cables connected. For about 10-15 min the audio will play fine from the ARC and then all of a sudden the audio will start to drop and sometimes vanish all of a sudden as well. There was no listening session where this did not happen. With optical, there were times when there was a noticeable lip-sync issue at times. The only input that worked flawlessly was the line in. I connected the Blaupunkt SBWL-03 to an LG B9 OLED with all the sources - HDMI ARC, Optical, Line-in and Bluetooth.

When connected with line-in and optical I managed to watch some news, Young Sheldon, Mad Max, play a few games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us II. From just this one source (line-in) I can tell you that if the other input sources worked flawlessly, it would be easy to recommend this soundbar. The vocals and dialogue are clean and clear, the bangs from the sub are decent and the volume can get pretty loud. There is good channel separation as well be it with objects moving on-screen or when different characters are talking from different corners of the room. In the optical connection, I did face a sync issue sometimes between the audio playing and lips moving on the screen with the optical connection and this can get quite distracting. In a game like The Last of Us 2 where enemies are calling out to each other, there was distinct channel separation. Even in Mad Max, when the cars in the desert zoom from one side of the screen to the other, there is good separation. There is enough bass thump and roar when the engines of the cars fire up.

The Blaupunkt Soundbar is long enough for a 50 to 65-inch TV setup

Even for music, be it rock, classical or Bollywood dance numbers, the soundbar is fun when listening to music. Bluetooth connection does degrade the audio quality when compared to AUX, and that’s a known thing for all soundbars. But with more and more smartphones getting rid of the 3.5mm port, soundbars need to up their Bluetooth connectivity game. Also, when connected via Bluetooth there is a slight hum that comes from the subwoofer. It is evident at low volumes removing you from the listening experience. The hum wasn't there always but appeared often enough for me to highlight it as an issue.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the sound output considering the price range we are talking about. Alas, the buggy performance with ARC and optical makes it really hard to recommend this soundbar.

TheBlaupunkt SBWL-03 Soundbar comes with a wireless subwoofer.

Bottom line

The buggy performance of the HDMI ARC, Optical and Bluetooth connectivity of the soundbar makes it hard to recommend. The soundbar launched at Rs 13,990 but as of writing this review, it is available on Amazon for Rs 15,234. At that price, it is even harder to recommend especially when the likes of the JBL Bar 2.1 are available at about 20k, offering better value for money proposition with the same connectivity options. We also have the Sony HT-S20R that gives users a 5.1 setup for Rs 18,000.

Telugu Film Producer Arrested for TV Actor's Suicide

Telugu film producer G. Ashok Reddy, known for film like RX100 has been arrested for abetment to suicide of Kondapalli Sravani, who passed away last week.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 6:45 PM IST

Hyderabad Police on Wednesday arrested Telugu film producer G. Ashok Reddy in the suicide case of Telugu television actor Kondapalli Sravani, who hanged herself last week.

Ashok Reddy, who was absconding since Monday when he along with two others were booked, was finally arrested by the police.

Police had served notice on the producer, asking him to appear before them. He, however, went into hiding and his mobile phone was also switched off.

Ashok Reddy, who produced hit movies like RX100, is the third accused to be arrested in the case. Sai Krishna Reddy and Devaraj Reddy were already arrested and sent to judicial custody for abetment to suicide.

The producer was taken to the Osmania Hospital for medical check-up. He will be produced in the court later in the day.

The 26-year-old actor, who is known for her work in Telugu serials like Manasu Mamata and Mounaragam, hanged herself at her apartment in Madhuranagar in Hyderabad on September 8.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) A. R. Srinivas said Sravani had come in contact with Ashok Reddy in 2017 and he had offered her a small role in the film Premato Karthik. They developed friendship.

Ashok Reddy and Sai Kumar Reddy, who were earlier in relationship with Sravani, were unable to digest her coming closer to Devaraj Reddy since August last year. The duo along with Sravani's family harassed the actor and even physically assaulted her to keep her away from Devaraj.

Meanwhile, in a new twist to the case, the police in its remand report named Devaraj as the main accused. Sai Kumar is listed as accused number two and Ashok Reddy as accused number three.

While announcing the breakthrough in the case, the police officer had said that Sai Kumar is the accused number one, Ashok Reddy number two and Devaraj is accused number three.

During a telephonic conversation with Devaraj before hanging herself, Sravani spoke about the harassment by Sai Kumar Reddy, Ashok Reddy and her family members.

Police said Devaraj Reddy was also included as an accused in the case. He had promised to marry her, but distanced himself later, after learning about her past relationships with two men.

The police officer said all the accused at some point of time had promised to marry her and were also harassing her citing her relationship with others.

The police have not included the actor's family as accused saying they belonged to the victim party.

Strike looms as FG, Labour talks end in deadlock

Published

on

The talks between the Federal Government and the Organised Labour over the removal of petrol subsidy and the increase in electricity tariffs, ended in a deadlock on Monday.

While welcoming the labour leaders to the meeting held at the Bouquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, urged stakeholders to join heads and deliberate how Nigeria can survive the economic challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ngige said the meeting is “a bilateral dialogue between us as Nigerians to consider the state of the economy and events that have necessitated recent increases in electricity tariff and the price of petrol.”

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, urged the labour to show more understanding with the government over its policies.

According to Sylva, Nigeria lost about N1billion daily between 2016 and 2019, as a result of fuel subsidy and N3.74billion daily before 2016.

“There are a lot of issues to discuss; from 10 o’clock we haven’t been able to trash out all the things; I think it will be right to set committees to further deliberate and resolve them,” he said.

But the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, argued that the recent hike in cost of fuel and electricity tariffs further aggravated the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

Wabba said workers who have lost their jobs and sources of income due to COVID-19, are being forced to make further sacrifices.

“Those issues that constitute the price are part of the inefficiency in the system which the government hitherto has been paying and christened subsidy. The government cannot transfer the inefficiency to the people. Nigeria should refine its products,” he said.

“At this point, what do you have on the table to cushion the effects on workers – their families because they have been pushed to the wall and already at the edge. Do you have anything for us? So that we can now say that despite these challenges, this is what I have for Nigerian workers that they can have something that can cushion this effect for them.”

According to him, “Already the value of minimum wage had been eroded. The purchasing power parity, when you compare with all West African countries, we are already on the ground.

“That is the reality. In Ghana, compare their minimum wage with our own; in all West Africa countries, including Niger Republic that has just started refining recently, they are now serving us with products. That is not how we ought to be.”

The meeting ended with no agreement reached, while no date was fixed to continue the talks.

In case you choose to add yourself in the grid, hover over your thumbnail in the top right corner and add yourself. To remove yourself from the grid, follow the same steps. These changes are only visible to the user.

Google says that this feature is only available in Meet on the Web. By default, the maximum number of tiles is 9, and in tiled layouts, it is 16. Users will be allowed to increase or decrease the number of tiles with the help of a slider. The slider adjustments are specific to each meeting. The feature will be OFF by default, and users can go to Settings > Change Layout to adjust them.

Google Meet background Blur

If you have an untidy background while you are on a video call, Background Blur feature can be a lifesaver. When turned on, Meet will intelligently separate the users from the background by blurring the surroundings. Google recently launched a feature that filters out disruptive background noise in Meet. Both these features work in tandem to deliver a noise-free video call experience.

According to the company, the Google Meet Background Blur does not require an extension to work. Currently, it is supported on the Chrome browser on Windows and Mac devices. The company will soon roll out the feature to ChromeOS and Meet mobile apps. You can also cast your meetings to a TV.

Indian Court Issues Second Arrest Warrant For GP Global Bunker Tanker - Document

An Indian court has issued a second arrest warrant for a marine refuelling tanker owned by troubled UAE oil trader GP Global after it failed to make payments to its ship manager, court documents showed.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:12 PM IST

SINGAPORE/MUMBAI/DUBAI: An Indian court has issued a second arrest warrant for a marine refuelling tanker owned by troubled UAE oil trader GP Global after it failed to make payments to its ship manager, court documents showed.

On Sept. 10, the High Court of the western Indian state of Gujrat granted the vessel manager’s, Singapore-based Celestial Ship Management Pte Ltd, a request to arrest the GP B3 bunker tanker for unpaid dues, according to the court documents seen by Reuters.

On the previous day, the same court granted a request by the National Bank of Fujairah (NBF) to arrest the same GP Global-owned bunker tanker after the oil trader defaulted on a loan payment.

Celestial, which offered technical management, crewing and other services for the GP Global ship, said it was owed just over $600,000 in outstanding claims, interest and court fees, the company told the court, according to the documents.

Among the registered directors of Celestial are Prachi Goel and Swati Goel, who are the spouses of the directors and shareholders of GP Global, Prerit Goel and Manan Goel, respectively, according to Singapore company records.

Celestial and GP Global’s Asia Pacific office in Singapore also share the same address, company records showed.

GP Global, a supplier of marine fuels worldwide with offices in Europe, Asia and America, told Reuters in an email it would not be able to comment “since the matter is subjudice”.

Reuters was unable to find contact details for Celestial.

Celestial “had made repeated requests for payment but the last such payment was received in April 2019 and no such payment has been received thereafter,” the court said in the document.

Despite having agreed with the vessel’s owner not to “commit their own funds” for the payment of expenses incurred by from the vendors that the ship’s managers engaged, Celestial “was being chased by the vendors and due to the impeccable reputation of (Celestial), they had to make the payment as they were put in an embarrassing position”, the company told the court.

In July, GP Global said that it had undertaken a financial restructuring exercise after it failed to “get full support from a few financial institutions” and denied rumours questioning the company’s financial condition as “blatant lies”.

Later in July, the UAE-based trader said that an internal investigation had uncovered fraud within the company and it had filed criminal complaints against some of its employees.

AI-driven robot Mayflower recreates historic voyage

Published
media captionThe full-size, crewless research ship will make one of the first autonomous transatlantic voyages.
A crewless ship aiming to recreate the Atlantic crossing of the Mayflower, 400 years ago this month, will set sail from Plymouth harbour on Wednesday.
The Mayflower Autonomous Ship will collect data on the ocean and marine life, including sampling for plastics.
Captained by a robot trained by IBM-designed artificial intelligence, using a million nautical images, it will complete six months of sea trials before its two-week Atlantic crossing.
The 1620 crossing took over two months.
The original Mayflower, a 100ft (30m) triple-masted wooden vessel with canvas sails and a maximum speed of three knots (6km/h), carried 102 passengers and a crew of about 30 from Plymouth to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
image copyrightIBM
image captionThe original Mayflower was bigger and more impressive but slower and reliant on humans
The 2020 version, made of aluminium composite, by non-profit organisation ProMare, is a trimaran fuelled by solar-powered batteries, with a back-up diesel generator and a maximum speed of 10 knots.
And instead of passengers and crew, it is packed with technology, including:
  • lidar
  • radar
  • cameras
  • global positioning system (GPS) antennas
"Able to scan the horizon for possible hazards, make informed decisions and change its course based on a fusion of live data, the Mayflower Autonomous Ship has more in common with a modern bank than its 17th-Century namesake," IBM chief technology officer Andy Stanford-Clark said.
For anyone wanting to track its progress, the MAS400 website shows the ship's current location and status, the course of its voyage and samples from its research pods.

Verdict

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earbuds almost encompass every aspect of what a perfect pair of true wireless earbuds should be. Although pricier, the earphones sport an array of features and also look aesthetically-pleasing. The sound quality is exceptional, easily one of the best sounding true wireless earbuds out there. The battery life is weaker when compared to its competition in this segment, however, the charging case does provide users with two full charges, which is quite decent. If you are hunting for a pair of true wireless earphones, and don’t mind spending a little too exorbitantly, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earphones may just be the ones for you.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless detailed review

The quest to snip the unpalatable wires off Bluetooth earbuds has been ongoing for the past couple of years. Now, there are multiple models out there to dethrone the Apple AirPods from their reigning position in this segment. Sennheiser has also made its debut in this inflating segment with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless. The Momentum range from the company, up until now, has proven to be solid audio devices in their own categories, be it over-ear, on-ear, in-ear or wireless. The company is finally making its way into the completely untethered Bluetooth earbuds segment. Let’s look at how these true wireless earbuds fare in our review.

Performance

Barring a few minor, mostly inconspicuous flaws, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earbuds are easily one of the best true wireless earbuds you can buy. The price of these earbuds certainly demand great performance, and Sennheiser has not disappointed here. The audio is clear and crisp. The usual high-standard sound profile of the Momentum range is maintained, with an extra boost from the new 7mm driver which results in a more controlled and capable audio performance. The bass thump is heard clearly in tracks such as Call on Me by Chris Rea and Another One Bites the Dust by Queen, however, it is not overwhelming. If you prefer the head-banging bass like on Beats headphones, these earbuds aren’t the right fit for you. Despite a prominent bass presence, audio and instrument clarity isn’t compromised in any manner. Freddie Mercury’s words in the song (mentioned above), are clearly audible and if you listen closely, you can even hear breath sounds, which is fantastic, since these earbuds maintain the integrity of recorded tracks.

Mid and high frequencies are balanced impeccably and the sound output is quite natural, as mentioned above. They tend to suit just about any genre, which is an ideal scenario, especially at this price point. Drums sound big and bold in tracks like Something From Nothing by Foo Fighters. None of the frequencies ever seem to overpower the other, and the sound never gets screechy, even in the high frequencies. The earbuds are fundamentally perfect, when it comes to sound quality, if you don’t want your skulls to be rattled by overwhelming bass and prefer to hear the fine details in music since they tend to favour mid-range instruments and vocals over weightier sounds.

One of the features - Transparent Hearing - which allows you to hear your surroundings while listening to music, actually does enhance the sounds around you ever-so-slightly, but this doesn’t really matter since you can already hear a lot of what is going on around you because of inefficient isolation. This could possibly be because of the lack of foam tips. This is not a dealbreaker, but it would be a nice feature to add since better isolation translates to better immersion overall.

Call quality, on the other hand, is quite good as well. The person on the other end could hear what we were saying extremely clearly. While we could hear the caller clearly as well, the maximum call volume was a little lacking, by our standards. The earphones are also an absolute dream to consume content on. They feature aptX low latency, so media plays perfectly in sync. We tested this out across Netflix and YouTube, as well as downloaded videos, and the results are spectacular. The sound encapsulates you, and adds an element of realism to the content, when it comes to the sound.

Battery life is nothing extraordinary, unfortunately. The earbuds lasted about 3 and a half hours from full charge which is pretty close to the company claim, which is 4 hours. The charging case houses two extra full charges for the earbuds, giving you a total of around 12 hours of battery life, give or take (more take than give).

Design and Build

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless casts away the neck cable on the Momentum Free earbuds and packs in a spanking-new 7mm driver. The earbuds adorn silver detailing interrupted by a pattern of magnetic gold points that fix them to the charging case with a satisfying click. The earbuds are lightweight and extremely easy to secure in your ears. They also offer a comfortable and snug fit. The boxy shape may indicate an insecure fit further fueled by the lack of rubber wing tips, however, in our tests, we realised that the earbuds pretty much stay put despite the build and lack of wing tips unless you’re using them during an intense workout session. They should work quite well during jogging and commute.

The aluminium touch panels on the back of the earbuds add a certain flair to the design as well. Additionally, they do not stick out as much as other models from Sony and Bose. The box contains three ear tip sizes, we found that the default ones worked pretty well for us, however, you must switch sizes if they earbuds don’t seem to be secure in the ear.

The charging case is made out of a greyish-tone coarse cloth with a classy heathered weave and houses the Sennheiser logo smack in the middle. The case is extremely attractive  compared to the standard, matt-black charging cases that are extremely prevalent. The sheer aesthetics of the charging case is unlike what we’ve seen in most true wireless charging cases before, and you can tell Sennheiser put in a lot of thought into how the case looks and feels in-hand. The cover houses magnets which cause the case to audibly snap shut when closed.

There’s USB-C charging and a battery level indicator on the charging case as well. The tiny light on the back of the case, right beside the charging port, glows green if the case has full charge, yellow if halfway or so, and red if the battery is running low. The earbuds really rely on the case to perform even the most basic functions like powering on or off. So, you will always need to have it on you. The case, although gorgeous, is slightly bulky and we’d prefer it even more if Sennheiser had worked on trimming down its form factor.

Features

While the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless does feature a host of features to aid functionality and ease-of-use, they can be slightly difficult to fully comprehend in the beginning. However, in a while, the earphones pretty much set themselves up every time you extract them from the charging case. Just be sure to keep the device you want to connect as the only active Bluetooth connection in range since it can get confused sometimes.

The touch controls, while convenient, really aren’t all that intuitive with several actions needing double taps or triple taps even, making it difficult to get accustomed to. To set up, you will need to touch and hold the back of both earbuds for five seconds in order to pair with a device. Tapping the left earbud once pauses the music and tapping it again resumes it. Additionally, the earbuds also pause music or media when you take one or both the buds out of your ear canal. Pressing the left bud twice plays the next track while pressing it thrice plays the previous one. The right earbud, on the other hand, can be used to accept calls and to awaken your voice assistant. Holding down the touch panel of the right or left earbud will increase or decrease the volume respectively. We were really displeased with the inability to control the volume precisely since holding down either bud increases or decreases the volume rather rapidly and achieving your ideal volume setting can be a bit of a precarious situation.

You can also tweak EQ settings to your liking by using Sennheiser’s Smart Control app. The changes this app allows is more than adequate for the average listener. However, we did find that the default tuning sounded better than any of the alternatives we tested. The app also shows you battery levels for each bud and offers control over the Transparent Hearing feature. The Transparent Hearing feature basically allows you to hear the ongoings in your environment while you are listening to music. The app also allows you to turn Smart Pause off, if you wanted to, however, we don’t understand why you’d want to since the feature is infinitely convenient and works pretty well too.

Bottomline

Sennheiser gave itself quite a task to accomplish by pricing the Momentum True Wireless earbuds at an exorbitant cost of Rs 24,990 since there was so much more pressure to prove their mettle. However, they haven’t failed at this in the slightest. The earbuds feature a stylish design, smart controls, and professional sound and are a fantastic choice for those who want to live the untethered life when it comes to earphones. The Apple AirPods cost half as much as the Momentum True Wireless, so if you’re an Apple user we’d recommend the AirPods over these. However, for audiophiles, these earphones are pretty much the best you can get in this segment. Apart from a few issues mentioned above, Sennheiser has managed to show off their audio prowess with the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless.

We all remember actor Deepika Padukone’s role as Mastani in the 2015 movie Bajirao Mastani as one filled with grace and elegance, but a recent video on social media is showing us her another side. The behind-the-scene video of the dance number Deewani Mastani shows Deepika in a goofy and fun spirit.

The video is from the rehearsals of the song Deewani Mastani from the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus. While rehearsing for a dance step for the song, Deepika can be seen having fun and imitates punching herself. The dancing crew can also be seen enjoying with the actress.

Bajirao Mastani is a historical romantic movie which also starred Deepika’s husband Ranveer Singh and actress Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. Singh played the role of Maratha ruler Peshwa Bajirao, while Chopra portrayed Peshwa’s wife Kashibai. The movie depicts the love story of the ill-fated couple Peshwa Bajirao and daughter of Bundela king, Mastani.

The set created for the song Deewani Mastani was inspired by classic Indian historical drama Mughal-e-Azam. Mastani’s performance in the Peshwa’s court resembled a lot with Madhubala’s performance in the court of emperor Akbar.

Bajirao Mastani won multiple Filmfare awards in 2016, including the ones for the best director, best supporting actor and best actor. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali also won the National Award for the movie in 2016.

Deepika will next be seen in director Shakun Batra’s movie, which also stars Ananya Pandey and Siddhant Chaturvedi. The shooting for the movie has already commenced as Deepika was spotted at Kalina airport, leaving for Goa where the movie is being shot.

Meanwhile, Singh’s two movies ‘83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar, which were supposed to release this year, have now been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. The new release dates are yet to be announced.

Taking a jibe at BJP-led central government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the government was being inconsistent in their statements on the India-China border issue.

Gandhi in a tweet said going by the chronology of events, the government should clarify whether it is with the Indian Army or China and what is it afraid of.

Gandhi took to Twitter and wrote: "Understand the chronology: PM said- no one crossed the border. Then, took a huge loan from a China-based bank. Then, Defence Minister said - China occupied our land. Now, MOS Home says- there's no infiltration. Is Modi Government with Indian Army or with China? Modi ji, why so scared."

"Understand the chronology" refers to when Home Minister Amit Shah, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls last year, had said, "Aap chronology samajh lijiye" while explaining how BJP would first pass CAB, then implement NRC across the country.

According to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, by stating that no intrusion took place on the Chinese border, the government has given a clean chit to China again and asked it to come clean on the situation at the border.

He said the nation is "shocked" at such "brazen duplicity" of the Modi government in handling China's territorial aggression.
