HYDERABAD: Raising the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 will lead to an increase in elopement cases and criminalization of sexual activity, say activists. Around 20 organizations including Bhumika Women’s Collective, Gramya Resource Centre for Women and Shaheen held a discussion over the proposal to increase the women’s marriageable age. Post the discussion, the activists stated that increasing the age bar for marriage will only do more harm than good.

Recently, a Delhi-based NGO Partners for Law in Development undertook an analysis of cases reported under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006. The data analysed comprised 83 High Court and District Court judgments and orders between 2008 to 2017 and found that in 65 per cent of the cases, PCMA was used to punish elopement of two consenting older adolescents.

Experts claimed that they spoke to around 1,500 children between the age of 18-21 from Telangana. Most of them felt that if after 18 years of age, they have the right to choose their leader, they should not be deprived to make decisions regarding their marriage, said chief functionary from Bhumika, K Satyavathi.
Citing that while 26% of women in the 20-24 age group, as per the National Family Health Survey (2015-16), married before 18. As many as 56% out of this group marry before 21,  Satyavathi added that the law which is being designed to protect children will only add more criminal cases against them and their families.

Satoshi Nakaboto: ‘MicroStrategy buys another $175M in Bitcoin’

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin BTC every fucking day.

Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Descartes used to say: Whip it, whip it, whip it!

Bitcoin price

We closed the day, September 15 2020, at a price of $10,796. That’s a minor 1.11 percent increase in 24 hours, or $119. It was the highest closing price in twelve days.

We’re still 46 percent below Bitcoin‘s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017).

Bitcoin market cap

Bitcoin‘s market cap ended the day at $199,641,896,762. It now commands 58 percent of the total crypto market.

Bitcoin volume

Yesterday’s volume of $32,509,451,925 was the lowest in five days, 41 percent above last year’s average, and 56 percent below last year’s high. That means that yesterday, the Bitcoin network shifted the equivalent of 514 tons of gold.

Company with a market cap closest to Bitcoin

With a market capitalization of $198 Billion, Novartis has a market capitalization most similar to that of Bitcoin at the moment.

Bitcoin’s path towards $1 million

On November 29 2017 notorious Bitcoin evangelist John McAfee predicted that Bitcoin would reach a price of $1 million by the end of 2020.

He even promised to eat his own dick if it doesn’t. Unfortunately for him it’s 100.0 percent behind being on track. Bitcoin‘s price should have been $596,466 by now, according to dickline.info.

Bitcoin energy consumption

On a yearly basis Bitcoin now uses an estimated 69 terawatt hour of electricity. That’s the equivalent of Czech Republic’s energy consumption.

Bitcoin on Twitter

Hema Malini On Drugs Row: Can't Take It When They Ridicule Our Film Industry

"Can't Take It When They Ridicule Our Industry": Hema Malini On Drugs Row

Hema Malini, 71, spoke to NDTV on a day Jaya Bachchan spoke emphatically in parliament against what she called attempts to vilify the film industry with allegations of drug abuse related to the Sushant Singh Rajput death investigation.

'Can't Take It When They Ridicule Our Industry': Hema Malini On Drugs Row

Hema Malini, though a rival in politics, backed Jaya Bachchan's sentiment on Bollywood.

New Delhi:

Veteran actor and BJP MP Hema Malini said Bollywood would "always remain in high esteem" and no one could bring it down in a flash over allegations like drugs and nepotism. In an emotional defence of the film industry, she said, "I got name, fame, respect, everything from this industry... it feels really hurtful."

Hema Malini, 71, spoke to NDTV on a day another senior actor Jaya Bachchan, her contemporary in Hindi films, spoke emphatically in parliament against what she called attempts to vilify the film industry with allegations of drug abuse related to the Sushant Singh Rajput death investigation.

Hitting out at actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishen over his comments on drugs in Bollywood, Jaya Bachchan, a Samajwadi Party member, said in Rajya Sabha: "Just because of a few people, you cannot tarnish the whole industry... Jis thaali me khaate hain usi me chched karte hain," she said.

Hema Malini, though a rival in politics, backed Jaya Bachchan's sentiment. "I want to tell people, Bollywood beautiful place, a creative world, it is an art and culture industry... I feel very hurt when I hear people talking so bad about it, about drugs and things like that...Where doesn't it happen? But if there is a stain, you wash it off and it goes. The stain on Bollywood will also go," she told NDTV.

So many artistes worked so hard to make the industry, continued the actor-politician.

"So many great artistes... matinee idols were gods in human form. People used to wonder whether they were artistes or God. Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dharmendra (Hema Malini's husband), Amit-ji (Amitabh Bachchan) - they are all examples of Bollywood luminaries who made Bollywood synonymous with everything Indian. Bollywood is India. I can't take it when they ridicule our industry like this."

She added that even if there were instances, it did not mean the entire industry is bad.

Tackling allegations of nepotism, which has been in the middle of a raging debate since actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai home on June 14, Hema Malini said: "If somebody's son or daughter joins the industry, it is not a given that they become superstars. Talent and luck matters."

Bollywood, she said, could not be tarnished by a small stain. "So many contributed to this industry - Hrisihkesh Mukherjee, Bimal Roy, Gulzar, Ramesh Sippy, Subhash Ghai...You cannot pull down the industry in one minute."

Ten people are set to be charged with murder after a teenager was killed in a brawl between warring gangs.

Girum Mekonnen, 19, died after a fight involving two groups of about 20 people broke out behind Zillmere PCYC in Brisbane's north on Sunday afternoon.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said ten young men are in police custody and in the process of being charged.

'I expect that each of those people will be charged with one count of murder,' he told reporters on Wednesday.

Det Supt Fleming said the men would also be charged with 11 counts of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of affray.

He said it will be alleged those involved went to Zillmere with the intent to assault the victims.

'This was an event that was highly confrontational and has been traumatic for the victims of the crime and their families,' he said.

'It's just unacceptable to have people in a public space who are going about their business then attacked this way.'

Paramedics took 11 people to hospital suffering stab wounds and blunt force injuries after one group allegedly attacked another with knives and baseball bats.

Some of the victims were allegedly knifed in their torso, pelvis, head and face.

Three people remain in hospital with one in a serious condition.

Police believe three carloads of people arrived at the Zillmere park seeking retribution for another incident in Brisbane's west on September 8.

Earlier, police said they were concerned some victims won't cooperate with investigators and may take matters into their own hands.

'It's a horrific, unacceptable attack in our society,' Det Supt Fleming said.

'But retribution is not going to solve the problem.'

Det Supt Fleming said more people may be charged.

Friends have explained Girum was simply 'in the wrong place at the wrong time' at the time of his death.

But locals say youths 'run riot' through the once quiet neighbourhood without any fear of authorities.

'They know cops can't touch them because they're underage,' a grandmother-of-one who was too afraid to be named told Daily Mail Australia.

She said Sudanese youths had repeatedly 'intimidated her' and demanded she hand over cash, and that they had no qualms about destroying public property.

'I watched one young man smash up a phone box because I wouldn't give him any money,' she said.

Between June and September 2020, some 220 offences were reported in Zillmere.

The groups frequent the public areas near the PCYC, which is a crime scene after Sunday night's fatal stabbing.

But the woman said they often loitered around the train station and nearby shopping precincts, too.

'I'd never get off the train at Zillmere, I'd always go one station along. It's just too dangerous,' she admitted.

'I tell my daughter the same thing. And its the same with the IGA around the corner from the station. I won't do my groceries after 6pm, its just not worth the risk.

'They're usually there, and they'll intimidate you.'

But Paul Christodoulou, the owner of Hair By Paul barber shop two doors down from Zillmere station said the young men in the neighbourhood are of little concern to him.

'I've been here 16 years, and I've never seen anything too bad,' he said before admitting that it could get a little 'rough' at the station occasionally.

'But I think that's been brought here, people moving from wherever they have come from. I've been here a long time now, and its never been that bad.'

Mr Christodoulou said he felt for the families of the young people involved in last night's clash.

Three friends of the victims told Daily Mail Australia the matter would be 'settled privately' and that those involved in the melee wouldn't want the public to be involved.

'Good luck to anyone who tells you anything,' one of the men said, before another added 'they don't use social media'.

'Their families won't even speak to us yet, let alone the media.'

The trio wouldn't comment on allegations those involved had gang affiliations.

A woman who claims to have 'watched her friend bleed out' insisted they were ambushed and are not part of a 'gang' but a 'family'.

'We are not a gang, we are a family. The people that attacked my friends were a gang,' she told The Courier Mail.

'34 was never a gang, it was a family and the media and people twisted it to the point y'all made them a target by a real p***y bunch of n****s that ambushed my brothers and girls.

'Then to have the police treat us with no respect and withhold where they took the injured and treat the family of the deceased family like they are crazy and wanting to put the mother in the mental hospital because she was breaking down about her son … f**ked system.'

But the grandmother-of-one who lived just down the road said she had no doubt those involved in the fray were the troublemakers she often tries to steer clear of.

'Oh, you could pick them on the street. I could point most of them out. I watch the area a lot and you do see a lot out here,' she said.

About 16 per cent of homes in the neighbourhood are public housing, compared to about four per cent in wider Brisbane.

The average income is about $748, again lower than the Brisbane average of $939, while just three per cent of people earn above $2,000 per week.

A social worker at the local youth community group told Daily Mail Australia there was a brawl near the PCYC just three weeks ago which involved local youths.

Police have indicated they believe Sunday night's stabbing was a retaliation attack over a previous incident.

Last Tuesday night, a 21-year-old man was bashed outside of Redbank Plains Woolworths in a 'vicious' attack in which 12 men of African descent beat him with baseball bats and stomped on his head.

'I'd never call the police on any of them, though. Never. It wouldn't be worth it. One of them could kill someone right in front of me and I still wouldn't ring the police. It's best not to get involved.'

The woman said her partner often leaves for work at 4am and groups of young people - many who appear underage - are wandering the streets or hooning at the same time.

'I just don't know why people are walking the streets at that time... Why aren't their parents doing anything?'

'It's very, very sad,' she said. 'I first lived here about 20 years ago, moved away and came back two years ago. It's a very different neighbourhood now.'

The woman suspected an uptick in housing commission and subsidised private housing had led to a spike in crime within the community.

A gymgoer at PCYC told Daily Mail Australia he 'wasn't shocked' to hear of the brutality.

'Of course I'm not shocked. This is Zillmere, mate,' he said.

'They could just be a bunch of kids though, I wouldn't say they're definitely part of gangs. But I don't know them at all, all I know is this sh*t just happens.'

He said behind the PCYC at the basketball courts and soccer fields seemed to be the local 'hang out destination' among young people within the community.

The owner of nearby Baba Juice agreed, saying he knows 'a lot of young people in that community go across there to play lots of basketball'.

He, too, insisted he had never seen any violence.

'It's ridiculous, it shouldn't have happened. But I've been here a long time, and I think that was the worst. It's never been that bad before.'

Police on the scene had been called in from Brisbane city to monitor the scene of the crime, while other officers had been deployed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, as well as the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where victims of the attack were taken on Sunday night.

A fight broke out among mourners at the Royal Brisbane Hospital about 10pm on Sunday as tensions boiled over following the melee.

An officer at the scene told Daily Mail Australia they were still trying to piece together all the information.

'I don't know too much about the neighbourhood and what it's normally like,' the officer said.

'We're watching this car because it's involved somehow. We've been told to keep an eye on it.'

A large portion of the community centre and car park were taped off by police late on Sunday as part of the investigation.

Within the crime scene was a small red hatchback, which was towed away about 1pm - after police spent hours monitoring, analysing and photographing it.

The car is believed to be linked to the crime, but police are still working to establish that connection.

Officers also sent a drone up to get a clearer image of the entire crime scene, which spanned across two basketball courts, the PCYC, car park and part of the soccer fields.

Two blood-soaked cloths were found within the crime scene.

Parts of the area itself were run down and in need of a face lift, with basketball hoops that were hanging on to the ring by a tether and graffiti etched into the sides of buildings.

Names were predominately scrawled on the walls, along with one sign which read 'I am gay'.

Nearby, 'FTP (f**k the police) had been scrawled on a separate building.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said: 'We know that the price of drugs is up at the moment and one of our working hypotheses is this is motivating the offending behaviour.'

He called for calm among the community, while confirming at least 20 people were involved in the initial altercation.

'Most of the people involved in this aren't co-operating with us and providing us detailed information.

'What we do believe is that the people who were in the park and have been the victims in this attack were set upon by those who have turned up presumably for the purpose of the assault.

'The offenders appear to be people of African heritage, the victims appear to be people of African heritage.'

Elders within the community will meet with police to discuss the violence.

Boarded up houses and businesses lined the streets nearby, feeling the pinch both of the COVID-19 pandemic but the social crisis, too.

Zillmere is home to about 8,967 people, according to the last Census data.

Between June 2020 and September 2020, at least 220 offences were reported in Zillmere alone, according to the Queensland Police online crime map.

At least 72 of those crimes were drug related, while a further 52 were linked to theft or handling stolen goods.

Assault, unlawful entry and carrying a weapon make up an additional 30 charges.

Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z3+ is the same phone as the company's last flagship, but with inferior performance. It makes no sense for Xperia Z3 users to 'upgrade' to this and in the current market, it's got absolutely nothing that it offers over its competitors or even the mid-ranged flagships.

Sony Xperia Z3 Plus detailed review

When the Snapdragon 810 is just one of the issues with your smartphone, you've got problems. I've kind of defeated the whole purpose of reading this review haven't I? Still, if you want to know how Sony is living in a world of its own, here's the Sony Xperia Z3+ review.

Build and Design

A day into the review, I was using this phone as my primary, when a colleague asked me, "Is this the Yu Yuphoria?"

I of course said no, but such 'oh snap' moments continued. Don't get me wrong, if you've liked Xperia designs till now, you'll like this one too, but no one can deny that it's the same. It's a good looking phone indeed, with the metal frame and the glass back. It is sturdier and more premium than the Yu Yuphoria, but you'll not get that by simply looking at it.

It looks like every other Xperia flagship till date. What's changed here from Sony's last flagship is that it has a rounded metal frame rather than the slightly flat profile on the Xperia Z3.

The minor changes in everything is perhaps the reason why Sony doesn't want to call this the Xperia Z4, except in Japan, where carrier requirements need the company to do so. Yes, the Xperia Z4 in Japan and Xperia Z3+ are the same devices. The Xperia Z3+ is slimmer than its predecessor, but the rounded sides make it feel thicker than that phone. It's lighter, yes, but good luck taking anyone's money with that lone change Sony.

It's a very minor change, with glass on both sides, so you have more to break. Like every flagship, you will obviously be careful for a 50k+ phone but if we're talking build and design, it doesn't justify the 'most expensive Android flagship of the year' monicker.

The capless micro-USB port is a good innovation but again not one that justifies the price. This is especially because I still need to deal with flaps on the SIM and micro-SD slot.

Display

This might surprise you, but in a world of QHD smartphones, the display is still the strongest aspect of the Xperia Z3+. The lack of sharpness is not something everyone would mind and the colours are great.
Imagine the LG G4's display, but with a cooler tone. The best displays today are slightly warm, yes, but Sony still takes them head on with its FHD screen. It's just a bit biased towards the white end of the colour gamut, but definitely still likeable.
Take a look at this display comparison of 2015's flagships to get a better idea.

UI

With Android Lollipop Sony's UI is closer to stock now than it ever was. You may or may not like that, but there are some irritating changes here. For one, the smart features just don't work well enough. They make sense at first, but I quickly lost interest. After setting the 'Music on the go' feature to play Rdio whenever headphones were connected, Sony's own player kept popping up, overruling the Rdio app each time I connected my headphones.

I turned off most of the features the UI offered and disabled or uninstalled the unnecessary bloatware like Sony LIV, Playstation app and others. Seriously, have they not learned anything from all the flak Samsung took for its bloatware!

Performance
We've been hearing about the Snapdragon 810's heating issues and after trying it first hand on the Xperia Z3+, I'm questioning every upcoming phone that has advertised this SoC. In fact, even as I write this review now on the LG G4, I'm certain LG's compromise was a choice the company didn't have to think twice about. The Xperia Z3+ would have been burning in my hands by now.

Every phone you buy today will heat up while playing games, but the Xperia Z3+ will heat up while doing everything else as well. Simple things like a lot of emails, calls etc. make this phone heat up, let alone features like 4k recording. Right after unboxing this phone we took the camera for a spin here at the lab, it was the shortest spin ever, since it started heating up in about 5 minutes.

On the first day of using this phone, I was in a meeting with the phone on vibrate and my Moto 360 connected to it. I was replying to emails and texts from the watch for about half an hour, without touching the phone. When I picked it up later, the Xperia Z3+ was shockingly hot. So basically the interactions over bluetooth are too much for the SoC to take.

In the graph above, you'll notice the low AnTuTu scores obtained from the Xperia Z3+. The scores really never goes past that value, which shows that Sony is aggressively throttling the SoC as soon as heavy activity is detected. The camera app will crash often and 4K video recording is practically impossible when the device has reached its peak temperature. Notice in the graph above, how the Geekbench score is considerably lower than competitors. This is because the Xperia Z3+ throttles fast and moves to its little cores for most of the activities or clocks down its big cores heavily to manage over heating.

Sony Xperia Z3+ Performance 2 | Create infographics

Snapdragon 810 vs 801 | Create infographics

The same happens while charging the phone. If you run a benchmark test right after charging the Sony Xperia Z3+, you'll see that the processor is massively throttled. All this is in air conditioned areas mind you, so you can imagine what the processor will be like in the Delhi heat. During the review period, when outdoors, the phone started heating up when you're choosing a contact from the list and is already a little hot when the call is connected.

Speaking of calls, the speaker on this phone is tucked away somewhere inside the body. While the sound quality isn't bad, you may find the call volume to be a bit low.

Coming back to the heat part, Sony mentioned at launch that it has tackled the heating issue through software. Needless to say it doesn't work. What Sony is doing is throttling the processor every chance it gets, and it's just not working. The phone shows lags in UI animations, apps like Chrome crashed a few times and using the camera at will was almost impossible because of random crashes.

The fact that Qualcomm has failed with the Snapdragon 810 is also evident in the fact that the company has gone back to a quad-core design for its upcoming Snapdragon 820 SoC. If you consider the current market, you won't find many manufacturers going from an octa-core to a quad-core.

Like I said before? 'Oh snap' right?

Battery
Another claim Sony made when launching this phone was 'market leading' battery life. Now unless the company caters to a market where it exists alone, that's false. The LG G4 has dropped 15% battery in the half an hour I've spent writing this review, which is bad, but this phone still lasts me longer than the Xperia Z3+ did. I'm not saying that the G4 is a benchmark, just that the Xperia Z3+ is worse.

With no gaming, half an hour of web browsing and a bunch of calls and texts, I could get at best 6 hours of battery from the Xperia Z3+. It's not surprising given the state of the processor. So, I resolved to use the smart saving features of the UI. In doing so, I was dealing with a throttled processor, but the phone still lasted me 8.5 hours tops. It's not only bad, but a missed opportunity since good battery could have justified the lower resolution display.

Even if Sony expects people to use the smart saving modes and hence have a throttled processor, it's not worth it. For 56k, that's not something anyone's fine with.

Camera
Sony has made some changes in the camera algorithm, but it's still largely the same. The 20.7 MP snapper is good, just as good as it was last year. But there are many phones, both in the same range and below, that have surpassed it.

Sony Xperia Z3+

If you want to know the camera quality, I'll simply point you to the Xperia Z3 review.

What you must know about the Xperia Z3+ though is that the camera will shut down intermittently when you're shooting video, simply because the SoC is overheating too fast. In addition, the lack of optical image stabilisation in a flagship is a major let down. The Xperia Z3+ is no competitor for the LG G4 or Samsung Galaxy S6's camera because of these issues, even though the image quality is quite nice.

Rock Bottom
Being a long time Sony fan, it pains me and a lot of my colleagues here at Digit, to say that Sony has hit rock bottom with the Xperia Z3+. It's like our once favourite company is living in a world of it's own. It's ocassionally joined by HTC there, but the latter at least tried to make a different phone to make up for the One M9.

From the minute Sony announced the pricing at launch, we were disappointed. Essentially, the only thing that is new here is the processor. You know what that means? It means Sony is asking for Rs. 56k for the Xperia Z3 but with inferior performance. Yes, it is slimmer, but that's actually counter-productive for a phone that heats up so much. In fact, if you want to buy a Sony flagship, the Xperia Z3 is still the phone that you should go for.

It was suggested to me that this phone was launched simply to keep Sony's brand image up before the smartphone division is ultimately shut down. To be honest, despite the company's repeated claims that that's not going to happen, I have no better explanation myself for why Sony would launch this phone and charge this much for it. The Sony Xperia Z3+ brings a bunch of hollow claims and makes no sense in today's market.

Barbados wants to remove Britain's Queen Elizabeth as its head of state and become a republic, the Caribbean island nation's government has said, reviving a plan mooted several times in the past.

A former British colony that gained independence in 1966, Barbados has maintained a formal link with the British monarchy as have some other countries that were once part of the British empire.

"The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind," said Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason, delivering a speech on behalf of the country's Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

"Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving. Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence."

Download the NBC News app for breaking news and politics

That anniversary will come in November of next year.

Buckingham Palace said the issue was a matter for the people of Barbados. Britain's Foreign Office said the decision was one for Barbados to take.

"Barbados and the UK are united in our shared history, culture, language and much more. We have an enduring partnership and will continue to work with them along with all our valued Caribbean partners," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

As things stand, the governor general of Barbados is appointed by the queen on the advice of the island's prime minister. The governor general represents the queen at formal events such as the state opening of parliament, which was the occasion at which Mason delivered the speech on Tuesday.

Britain has played a key role in the history of Barbados, which was transformed by the Atlantic slave trade. The island was claimed for England in 1625 when Captain Henry Powell landed there.

It was quickly settled and stayed in British hands over the centuries, unlike other Caribbean islands that were fought over by the Spanish, British, Dutch, French and Americans. The introduction of African slaves to work the sugar plantations fields brought fabulous wealth for the white ruling class.

Today's population of under 300,000 is overwhelmingly of African descent. Some cultural links to Britain are still evident: towns have names like Hastings and streets like Liverpool Lane, while the sport of cricket is very popular.

Britain is home to a large community of people of Barbadian descent.

Trump reveals what he learned as US President

The United States President, Donald Trump has spoken on what he has learned from his presidency.

The American leader made the disclosure Tuesday night at an ABC News town hall in Philadelphia.

Citing his personal loss to the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump said he has realized that life is frail.

“I learned that life is very fragile. I knew people that were powerful people, strong people, good people, and they got knocked out by this, and died. Six people. It was five until about two weeks ago. Now, it’s six,” he said.

The president’s younger brother, Robert died exactly one month ago.

On black people, Trump insisted that his administration has “tremendous African-American support.”

He noted that the situation prior to coronavirus was the “best single moment in the history of the African-American people in this country.”

On police killings of blacks, Trump blamed the problem on police officers he described as “bad apples.”

The president also responded to a question on his indifference to wearing masks.

“A lot of people don’t want to wear masks…there are people that don’t think masks are good”, Trump said.

Alleged Head Of International Blood Doping Ring Begins Trial

Mark Schmidt and one of his alleged accomplices have been in custody for more than 18 months following police raids

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:19 PM IST

The trial of a German doctor and four others accused of being at the center of an international blood doping ring began in Munich on Wednesday.

Mark Schmidt and one of his alleged accomplices have been in custody for more than 18 months following police raids in the central German city of Erfurt and at the Nordic skiing world championships in Innsbruck and Seefeld, Austria in February 2019 as part of the Operation Aderlass criminal investigation. Blood bags were reportedly seized in the raids.

Schmidt is accused of being the mastermind behind a doping ring that was in operation since 2011. At least 23 athletes allegedly availed of his services.

The accusation is about the commercial and gang-like use of prohibited doping substances, and is directed against this doctor and small group of people who are said to have helped him over a longer period of time, namely since 2011, to teach so-called blood doping to athletes, especially in cycling and winter sports, chief prosecutor Anne Leiding said.

Schmidt, who had his medical practice in Erfurt, worked for the Gerolsteiner cycling team around the time Austrian rider Bernhard Kohl was stripped of third place at the 2008 Tour de France for doping.

Former professional cyclists Alessandro Petacchi and Danilo Hondo are the highest-profile athletes involved in the investigation. Hondo told German broadcaster ARD in 2019 that he had been a client of Schmidts.

Austrian cross-country skier Johannes Drr lifted the lid on the scandal when he gave details of his blood doping in an ARD documentary in January 2019. Drr said he had used transfusions and the banned substance EPO to boost his stamina, with regular treatments in Germany. Drrs statements led to the police raids on Feb. 27, 2019.

The Erfurt-based criminal group is strongly suspected of having carried out blood doping on elite athletes for years to increase their performance in national and international competitions and thereby to gain illegal income, Austrias Federal Police Office said at the time.

Austrian skier Max Hauke was caught in widely circulated footage with a needle in his arm during one of the raids. He and others including compatriot Dominik Baldauf were later given five-month suspended prison terms by Innsbruck Regional Court for serious commercial sports fraud after admitting to doping.

Hauke and Baldauf, and cyclists Georg Preidler and Stefan Denifl, were all banned from competing for four years for their alleged involvement in the doping ring.

Others involved include four-time Olympian Alexei Poltoranin of Kazakhstan, and Estonian teammates Karel Tammjarv and Andreas Veerpalu.

Drr was banned for life by the Austrian Anti-Doping Legal Committee last year.

The district court in Munich has scheduled 26 dates until Dec. 21 for the hearings. Chief public prosecutor Kai Grber said he does not believe there will be revelations with major consequences for the respective sports, news agency dpa reported.

Its unclear if Schmidt will give evidence or name other athletes involved. He could face several years in prison if convicted.

Its a hugely important process in the anti-doping fight not only in Germany, but far beyond our borders, German Olympic Federation president Alfons Hrmann said of the trial.

The British government plans to ration coronavirus testing, giving priority to health workers and care home staff after widespread reports that people around the country were unable to schedule tests.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:42 PM IST

LONDON: The British government plans to ration coronavirus testing, giving priority to health workers and care home staff after widespread reports that people around the country were unable to schedule tests.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday will face questions about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the House of Commons and before a key committee amid the outcry over the shortage of testing.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said the government is in the process of drawing up a new priority list for testing, suggesting that students and their families could be next in line after the National Health Service and social care.

I think what we need to do is have a cascading system where we know where our priority should be, and for me priority should be for children in school and their parents in order to ensure their lives are safe and also importantly they are not disrupted in the way we are seeing, Buckland told Sky News.

The squeeze on tests comes amid a surge in COVID-19 cases across the U.K. that has pushed daily new infections to levels not seen since late May and has forced the Conservative government to impose limits on public gatherings.

Widespread testing is seen as crucial to controlling the spread of the coronavirus because it allows those who are infected to self-isolate while helping health officials to identify hot spots and trace those who are infected.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the House of Commons on Tuesday that it may take weeks to sort out the problems. In the meantime, people have been turning up at emergency rooms due to the lack of availability of testing.

The Association of School and College Leaders warned the education system could become worse as more cases emerge. Keeping schools open would become unsustainable if issues with testing capacity were not fixed, said Geoff Barton, the group’s general-secretary.

Teachers need to be counted as key workers in order that you can at least keep that maths teacher in front of 30 young people if their test is negative, he told the BBC.

Verdict

The HTC U Ultra is a missed opportunity. The display is decent in terms of colour performance, but is less brighter than other flagships. Overall performance falls short when it comes to battery life, and even overall performance is comparatively lower than present generation flagships. The U Sonic app is good, but the U Ultra loses out majorly because of the USB-C adapter. The front camera is good, but the rear camera is noticeably poorer than the likes of Google Pixel and Apple iPhone 7 Plus. Numerous scratches and fingerprints do give you an insurance policy, but that is not very convenient. The HTC U Ultra is not a practical recommendation over other flagships, all of which makes it a missed opportunity.

HTC U Ultra detailed review

As a smartphone maker, HTC has a special place in my heart. The original HTC Desire that was released back in 2010 was my first smartphone, and back in the day, I was mighty impressed by it. However, over the past few years, HTC has presented a mix of interesting technologies like BoomSound and the UltraPixel camera, but rather average hardware. The HTC U Ultra we have today is priced at a whopping Rs. 60,000, and as a result, competes with the likes of the Apple iPhone 7 and the Google Pixel, alongside facing stiff competition from upcoming flagships by Sony, Samsung, LG  and others. After having spent a while with the U Ultra, it seems really unfortunate that the device feels like a missed opportunity for HTC to revive its game. It still has a number of good elements, but the myriad flaws overshadow the good here.

Before we set off, it is important to mention that the HTC U Ultra is not waterproof, and the company possibly realises that this is a significant downside for a smartphone that costs this much. When you buy an HTC U Ultra, you get a one-year insurance that covers liquid damage and any physical damage to the phones, and you don’t need any separate registration for it.

Build and Design

Beautifully unwieldy is the first thing that comes to mind when you set your eyes on the HTC U Ultra for the first time. The device has a massive, 5.7-inch 2K display on the front. Below it is the rather small fingerprint sensor, next to which rests the capacitive back and multitasking buttons. At the top-left corner of the display is the front-facing camera, and to the right is the secondary display, which is actually more useful than I imagined. The rear has a very glossy surface that is a stickler for fingerprints. The HTC U Ultra is available in a bunch of incredible colours including Brilliant Black, Cosmetic Pink, Ice White and Sapphire Blue (which is the one we have). With the glossy rear, the HTC U Ultra looks quite splendid. However, along with fingerprints, it is also quite prone to scratches. HTC's solution for this is to include a cleaning cloth - slightly helpful, but still rather inconvenient. The protruding camera module at the back does not let it lie flat on any surface. HTC includes a rear transparent cover in the box which will take care of all the scratches and blemishes, but the U Ultra doesn't look as good any more.

The tall, 5.7-inch display is difficult to use with one hand. It is slim, but the slightly unwiedly shape makes it difficult to fit into pockets. To sum up, the U Ultra has the essence of a good-looking device, but is not functional owing to the big size and the protruding rear camera. Unfortunately, you will spend a lot of time cleaning it or keeping it behind the veil of a case, which destroys the point of a good-looking smartphone. The capacitive buttons cover small areas on the front panel, which is not ergonomically ideal.

Second screen

This isn’t the first time that we have seen a smartphone with two displays. In recent times, LG has put considerable emphasis on dual-display smartphones like the LG V20, and the HTC U Ultra has a similar setup too.

Lift the smartphone and only the secondary display comes on, revealing the time and some of the notifications. You can swipe to create your own reminders or see your existing reminders, use shortcuts to functions such as torch, Wi-Fi, camera, calculator and more. You can include shortcuts to popular apps, contacts and see the weather for the rest of the day. It is quite nifty, and once you spend some time with it, you will get used to using it efficiently. All of the settings are also conveniently customisable, adding versatility to it.

Overall, the second screen is a welcome addition to the smartphone, although it isn’t the main selling feature for this flagship.

Fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint sensor fairly accurate, although the user interface presents a two-step layout by default. You get news articles by default on the lock screen, and from standby, hitting the fingerprint sensor will prompt you to put in the fingerprint again - a two-step process that is rather inefficient. You can switch the feed off to get direct unlock, which is more convenient.

Camera

The front-facing camera is good, and works well for selfie lovers. As far as the rear camera is concerned, it isn’t the best out there, and is noticeably behind the top smartphone cameras right now. Low light photos are decent, but produce noticeable noise. In well-lit situations too, there is loss of colour accuracy, contrast and details, particularly seeing that this is a pretty expensive smartphone. Focusing is not too fast, and struggles when you shoot macro. The U Ultra can record 4K (UHD) videos, with recording duration limited to 6 minutes.

HTC U Ultra Camera Samples

Sound

Sound is one thing that HTC does well and it is evident on the HTC U Ultra. You have BoomSound with stereo speakers - one in the earpiece and one near the USB port, and they sound good. There is good detail in the sound when watching Netflix and YouTube, particularly considering this is a smartphone speaker. They may not be very loud, but are quite clear.

Coming to the headphones, the 3.5mm audio port has been removed, and HTC does not even include a TRS-to-USB C adapter, which makes your choice highly limited. This is majorly inconvenient, as I cannot use my own pair of headphones with the device. I am not convinced that we need to move away from 3.5mm headphone connectivity yet, but adjusting to the transition certainly needs an adapter for the time being. The bundled headphones sound about average, and there is a distinct bias for treble, with attenuated bass response. HTC tunes the music playback via U Sonic, depending on your ear structure. Calibration results audibly vary, and although details are fairly well tended to, the overall audio balance is rather disappointing. Using wireless headphones would be your best bet at making the most of the U Ultra's audio proficiency, which itself calls for a fair amount of investment in order to derive decent output.

Battery life

The HTC U Ultra majorly disappoints in terms of battery life. Sporting a 3000mAh battery, the HTC U Ultra can last an entire workday of average usage, at best. In PCMark battery tests, the device lasted for about 7 hours, which is disappointing. With heavy usage, you would need to charge it before heading back home from work, which translates to about 8-9 hours of real time usage. Despite QuickCharge 3.0, the HTC U Ultra charges slower than the OnePlus 3, for the first 45 minutes.

HTC Sense Companion

As of writing this review, the HTC Sense Companion isn’t 100% active so we aren’t commenting on it. The Sense Companion is essentially HTC's own UI assistant, and will hopefully be rolled out in following updates.

Performance and Display

The overall performance of the HTC U Ultra is quite what you would expect from a flagship smartphones. Most apps and games ran smoothly, and there were no noticeable glitches with multitasking, calling, social networking or browsing. The display, though, is not really at par with flagships. At its lowest brightness, the device is still brighter than most others, which is a good thing. Auto brightness keeps the display brighter than what I like, and this is possibly how many would prefer it. What you will face a problem with, is sunlight visibility. The HTC U Ultra has maximum luminance of 544 lux, which is rather low for a flagship. For perspective, the Apple iPhone 7 has a maximum luminance that crosses 800 lux, whereas the Pixel XL has maximum brightness of 805 lux.

However, the display fares well in terms of colour accuracy. Gaming, video streaming and other actions look quite impressive, as long as you are using it indoors.

Four Teas That May Help Boost Your Immunity This Monsoon

Monsoons are the time to indulge in a piping hot cup of tea.

There is something special about the monsoon season. The weather is a breathe of fresh air and brings a sigh of relief from the scorching heat. There are moments when the sky turns dark, a flash of lightning illuminates the sky, followed by beautiful rains. This is the season when you let your guards down and indulge in some decadant snacks, from piping hot samosas and bread pakodas to delicious gulab jamun - it's only once is what we tell our conscience.

Every season comes with its own dietary demands. You might want to tweak your meals with the change in seasons to accommodate more seasonal produce, according to a particular season. Monsoon is a season when your immunity may take a hit as you're likely to be more exposed to germs resulting in flu, viral fever etc. According to various nutritionists, the drop in temperature slows down your metabolism rate. During monsoon, we should consume antioxidant-rich foods which keep infections away.

Here We Bring You A List Of Four Teas That You Must Have To Boost Your Immunity:

1. Masala Chai

Masala chai is a fine blend of Assam CTC tea blended with Indian spices. While the spices add flavour to your tea, they also have a host of health benefits. Various spices are blended into Masala Chai. The classic traditional Indian Masala Chai is made using six spices - Cardamom, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Pepper, Cloves and Ginger. Each spice has its own individual health properties; for example, Cardamom is good for the stomach, Cinnamon controls blood sugar levels, Ginger is good for the throat, Pepper has anti-inflammatory properties and Star Anise fights viruses and flu. Tea, of course, is loaded with antioxidants, which protect your body, when it combines with spices the goodness of tea doubles. So binge on Masala Chai to keep your body warm and metabolism in check.

It is rich in antioxidants, helps improve the absorption of insulin in the body; it reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and has anti-inflammatory properties. So when you have a sugar craving, have a cup of Cinnamon Green tea to curb the urge.

3. Peppermint Green Tea

Peppermint is used in toothpaste, chewing gum and mouthwashes, so we are familiar with its taste. But have you ever tried making a Peppermint Green tea which has actual leaves in its natural form? The refreshing taste of peppermint refreshes your palate immediately. But did you know that peppermint is benifcial for your stomach? It takes care of bloating, reduced acidity and keeps your digestion system healthy. So the next time you have a heavy lunch, have a peppermint green tea to ease your stomach.

An Indian couple who migrated to Melbourne have found fame through TikTok and Youtube after posting videos from home during lockdown.

Inder and Gurkirat Sarao arrived in Australia as international students from Punjab in 2014 before settling in north Melbourne.

The couple used extra time at home through coronavirus lockdown sanctions to their advantage to make money and launch a growing career through social media.

'I quickly adapted to this new work-style of working from home. Not only did it help me save on traveling time, but it also gave me an opportunity to focus on YouTube as an additional source of income,' Mrs Sarao told SBS.

Posting videos became a much-needed source of income for the couple, as Mr Sarao was unable to find work in the highly competitive Melbourne taxi market.

'I tried my luck both with taxi and Uber, but it turned out to be a big challenge,' Mr Sarao said.

The couple's Bollywood-inspired content showcases fashion, cooking, relationships and culture, while also covering issues facing international students.

Their combined Tik Tok channels @indersarao and @gurkiratrandhawa earned 22 million hits before the service was banned in India in June.

Mrs Sarao said the couple's journey from India to Australia and the challenges they have faced along the way is a popular theme in their content.

'We often discuss these issues in our videos. We are still in an early phase of our migration journey and we know it takes a lot of time and hard work to settle in Australia,' she said.

The couple bought a high definition video camera with money made from their Youtube videos and are actively pursuing social media as a source of income.

As their audience continues to steadily grow, Mrs Sarao said the couple aim to keep promoting positivity through their videos.

Starting this month, GST taxpayers to get more help in filing returns

Further, after taxpayers are accustomed to the additional information, the data automatically start flowing into GSTR-3B.Further, after taxpayers are accustomed to the additional information, the data automatically start flowing into GSTR-3B.

Starting this month, GST taxpayers will have the assistance of auto-generated documents detailing tax liability and availability of input tax credit (ITC) to make it easier for them to file their monthly summary returns (GSTR-3B), the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) said on Wednesday.

Usually, the taxpayers face two main issues while filing their GSTR-3B which are related to their liability and ITC. Till now, taxpayers were required to compute these values but now the system has been upgraded to enable linking of summary returns and the outward supply return or GSTR-1.

Taxpayers above `1.5 crore turnover are required to file GSTR-1 by the 11th of every month and GSTR-3B by 20th. This linking of these two returns has been done for these taxpayers but the functionality for others, who are allowed to file GSTR-1 quarterly, would be enabled later.

The linking will provide taxpayers with available credit they can claim. In this enhancement, system will auto-generate the invoice-wise ITC statement based on information furnished by the suppliers of the taxpayer in GSTR-1. “A new form GSTR-2B has been launched for this purpose which is, unlike GSTR-2A, a static statement and will be made available for each month on the 12th day of the succeeding month,” GSTN said.

It added that linking of returns is expected to give GSTN a big edge in curbing under-reporting of liability and over-reporting of ITC which has been a major concern for the government. Further, after taxpayers are accustomed to the additional information, the data automatically start flowing into GSTR-3B. In other words, GSTN will auto-populate the GSTR-3B return of the taxpayers.

These enhancements have been decided upon by the GST Council after the group of ministers (GoM) headed by Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi decided that proposed new returns would be shelved in favour of continuing with the existing system of returns with improvements and modifications to plug loopholes.

New Realme Smartphone Series Teased by Executive, May Come With Snapdragon 875 SoC

Realme new phone series is tipped to come with 125W fast charging support

Highlights
  • Realme has confirmed that it is working on new phone series
  • Past reports suggest it will have Opp Ace series-like phones
  • Realme new series phone may be powered by Snapdragon 875 SoC

Realme may be working on a new smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 875 SoC. Xu Qi Chase, President of Global Marketing and Vice President at Realme, teased the arrival of a new series. He didn't offer any timeline for launch, but noted that the upcoming phone will be powered by a 5nm flagship chipset, which sounds likely to be the upcoming Snapdragon 875 SoC. The current Snapdragon 865 SoC range is based on the 7nm FinFET process.

Chase took to Weibo to share a new poster that details main series announced by Realme including the Q series, V series, and X series. The poster hints at a new smartphone range in the offing, and Chase writes that the new smartphone will incorporate a 5nm flagship processor. He is likely talking about the unannounced Snapdragon 875 SoC, which should be based on 5nm process, given that the Snapdragon 865 SoC is based on 7nm process. However, at this stage it is just an educated guess as the company has not given more details.

This same poster was leaked in the past with the claim that Oppo is discontinuing its Ace series after launching just two phones in it. In turn, Realme will look to introduce similar Ace-like high-performing phones in a new smartphone series. The branding of this series is not known yet, neither is there any information on the launch timeline.

Previous report also suggests that the phone in this series will have 125W fast charging support that was introduced by Oppo recently. The company claims that this fast charging tech is able to charge a 4,000mAh battery up to 41 percent in just five minutes and fully charge it in 20 minutes.

New Delhi:

Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, on Wednesday, shared his thoughts on how kids view the coronavirus situation, by sharing a glimpse of her daughter's perspective on the pandemic. Prithviraj shared a note written by his six-year-old daughter Alankrita and said: "While most of us are trying to get back to a semblance of normal life I realise how much Covid is still on the minds of our children. Ally has prepared yet another Covid note! She's doing these on her own when she's not busy playing with her toys!" Alankrita addressed her note to "kids and adults", which includes some advice on how to curb the spread of the virus. "Stay indoors when it's increasing," read a part of her note, which also said: "Be brave in COVID-19 times." Just like us, little Alankrita is also looking forward to COVID-19 vaccine, and to her, the most important thing right now is this: "The only thing you can do is find a scientist and (let) him/her find the thing to stop Covid-19."

"Hopefully we will have a vaccine soon and all the kids can go back to their regular lives," Prithviraj wrote while sharing the note. Take a look at it here:

India has been reporting the highest number of coronavirus cases in the world since August, with over 50 lakh positive cases so far. It is the second worst-hit country in terms of COVID-19 cases after the US.

Meanwhile on Alankrita's birthday this year, Prithviraj had written this heart-warming message to his daughter. "Happy birthday sunshine! You will forever be Dada's and Mamma's biggest joy and brightest light. A part of me wishes you wouldn't grow up so soon, but another part of me is so much in awe of the person you're growing up to be!" Prithviraj and Supriya Menon got married in 2011 and Alankrita was born to the couple in 2014.

Prithviraj Sukumaran was stuck in Jordan's Wadi Rum desert for three months because of flying restrictions and touched down in his hometown Kochi in May. The actor was in self-quarantine for two weeks, after which he finally met his family.

Whole towns have been ruined by the blazes, which have pumped out tonnes of noxious fumes that have hung in the air for days, blocking out the sun and making breathing difficult.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 8:52 AM IST

US President Donald Trump on Monday further proved that he has no idea how climate change or forest fires work.

In a new, false and unscientific claim, he said that 'trees just explode,' on why the US wildfires which are raging on unabated, actually started.

Trump repeated his argument that wildfires are caused by poor maintenance of forest areas, making them more combustible.

"There has to be strong forest management," he said.

"With regard to the forests, when trees fall down after a short period of time, about 18 months, they become very dry. They become really like a match stick," he added. "They just explode."

Infernos across California, Oregon and Washington state have burned more than five million acres (two million hectares) this year, killed dozens of people and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Whole towns have been ruined by the blazes, which have pumped out tonnes of noxious fumes that have hung in the air for days, blocking out the sun and making breathing difficult.

But Trump, in Sacramento on the third day of a re-election campaign swing, pushed back against state officials arguing that a heating climate underlies the ever-stronger fires.

"It will start getting cooler. You just watch," Trump said, offering no evidence for the theory.

"I wish science agreed with you," responded Wade Crowfoot, the head of the California Natural Resources Agency.

"I don't think science knows, actually," Trump said.

Reputable scientists around the world are almost unanimous in their belief that the world is getting warmer because of human activity.

This man-made climate change amplifies droughts, which dry out regions, creating ideal conditions for wildfires to spread out-of-control and inflict unprecedented damage.

Much of the West Coast has been blanketed in choking smog for days, with Portland on Monday the world's most air-polluted city according to IQAir.

Washington state Governor Jay Inslee said it was crucial voters elect a "climate president" come November 3.

"This moment requires action, not denial," he said in a tweet. "We must come together around science to build a better future for all Americans."

Most of the 35 deaths so far confirmed have occurred in California and Oregon, where the wildfires are the worst in decades and have been fueled partly by record heat.

More than 30,000 firefighters are battling the blazes, with wind gusts and drier weather on Monday threatening more destruction.

Residents of Arcadia, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, were ordered to evacuate Sunday as the nearby Bobcat Fire spread south through forested terrain toward the metropolis.

Two new deaths were confirmed from the North Complex Fire, which swept at unprecedented speeds last week into areas already ravaged less than two years ago by the Camp Fire -- California's deadliest ever blaze.

"There are still active fires, power lines are down, trees are down, there are roads that are impassable," said Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea, warning evacuees it could take "weeks and weeks" to return to their homes.
