Tata Projects Limited to build new parliament building for Rs 861.9 crore

|

New Delhi, Sep 16: Tata Projects Ltd has won the contract of contructing the new Parliament building at a cost of Rs 861.9 crore, according to a report.

The Central Public Works Department had opened financial bids for the construction of the new Parliament building.

Tata Projects Ltd has given a bid of Rs 861.90 crore and Larsen and Toubro Ltd has submitted a bid of Rs 865 crore.

The government had narrowed the list of choices for building a new Parliament complex to three Mumbai-based construction companies -- Larsen & Toubro Limited, Tata Projects Limited and Shapoorji Pallonji & Company Private Limited -- after disqualifying four other entities that bid for the contract, bringing it a step closer to tendering out the project.

A housing and urban affairs ministry official said that the design with the state emblem has been finalised for the construction tender.

Steady decline in Left Wing Extremism violence: Govt tells Parliament

Construction of the new Parliament building, which will comprise halls with a bigger seating capacity for the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, offices for members of Parliament, as well as a courtyard, dining facilities and a lounge for lawmakers, is likely to begin after the ongoing Parliament's winter session and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

CPWD has specified that the existing Parliament building shall continue to function during the execution of this project.

Ronald Koeman said Barcelona must sell before they can think about signing Lyon captain Memphis Depay as the head coach expects to start the La Liga season with no additions to the squad. (More Football News)

Depay has been tipped to reunite with former Netherlands coach Koeman at Barca following his exploits for Ligue 1 outfit and Champions League semi-finalists Lyon.

However, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas – prior to Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Montpellier – claimed Barca cannot afford to buy Depay due to their finances amid the coronavirus crisis.

Koeman, who has replaced Quique Setien at Camp Nou, was asked about former Manchester United forward Depay amid talk of a €25million transfer and he told Fox Sports Netherlands: "For Depay to arrive, you must first sell."

Barca have been linked with a number of players following a miserable 2019-20 campaign, which saw the Spanish powerhouse dethroned by bitter rivals Real Madrid in La Liga and embarrassed 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

After receiving Miralem Pjanic in a swap deal that sent Arthur to Serie A champions Juventus, Barca continue to be linked with Inter star Lautaro Martinez.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has emerged as a possible target for Barca, while former star Thiago Alcantara has also been linked with a move from Bayern.

However, Koeman said: "We're working towards the new season and I think we will go into it with the same group of players that we have now for pre-season."

Barca will open their 2020-21 La Liga campaign at home to Unai Emery's Villarreal on September 26.

Lionel Messi is set to take to the field for Barca following a turbulent off-season, which saw the superstar captain try to leave the club.

Linked to Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter and Juventus, six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi decided to stay after handing in a transfer request amid frustration with Barca's board.

Asked about the situation involving Messi, former Barca defender Koeman added: "That has passed me reasonably well. That was mainly a conflict between Messi and the club.

"I have spoken to Messi since then and we will continue as usual."

Obaseki vs Ize-Iyamu: Bola Tinubu under fire for not speaking against Buhari govt

Published

on

Senior pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Christ Ministry, Adewale Giwa, has attacked the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to speak against what he described as injustices and anti-people policies of the current administration.

Giwa, in a statement to DAILY POST on Tuesday, noted that Tinubu was about winning elections rather than speak against killings and injustice in Nigeria.

The cleric was reacting to Tuesday’s broadcast by Tinubu where he urged the electorate in Edo State to reject Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and vote for the candidate of his political party, APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the Saturday’s election.

Giwa said, “Permit me to describe such action as selfish and disappointing. Alhaji Tinubu failed to address Nigerians when President Muhammadu Buhari increased the prices of petroleum and electricity.

“Why is Tinubu giving Nigerians the silent treatment while Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to kill Christians and innocent citizens of the country?

“You promised Yoruba region and Nigerians in general when you sold president Muhammadu Buhari to us in 2015 that your party was coming to address hunger, unemployment, security among others, but all failed.

“Ephesians 5:11 specifically tells us not to take part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

“For Asiwaju to have kept quiet over the years in watching president Buhari mistreating Nigerians, that means, he( Asiwaju Bola Tinubu) would have done worse if given the opportunity to rule the country.

“Should we now agree with Asiwaju that he is more concerned about seeing his party winning elections than economic hardship his political party has brought upon Nigerians?

“Your silence on burning issues in Nigeria sends a strong signal to us that ‘you are pleased with the policies of president Buhari and your political party.’

“Is it all about your interest or the interest of Nigerians that made you to address the people of Edo to vote for your candidate?

“Someone should kindly tell Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu that Nigerians are eagerly waiting for him to declare his presidential ambition.”

Verdict

There’s not much to criticise with the Sony WF-1000XM3 since you get solid sound quality, exceptional ANC for in-ears, long battery life and a host of premium features. The only features we sorely missed were wireless charging for the case, an IP rating and aptX support. The earphones are also comfortable for most ears and can be worn for long periods without overbearing fatigue. Additionally, Sony has priced these pretty competitively in the premium true wireless segment, undercutting the AirPods Pro and Sennheiser True Momentum Wireless 2 that offer similar features. Therefore, if you are looking for a premium pair of earphones that can envelop you in an auditory bubble and immerse you with great features, the Sony WF-1000XM3 are exceptional earphones to consider, especially since they are priced under 20K. However, if you’re looking for an IP rating and something more fitness-oriented, you could consider the Sony WF-SP800N instead.

Sony WF-1000XM3 detailed review

The crown jewel of Sony’s true wireless lineup, the Sony WF-1000XM3 Noise Cancelling headphones, has finally made its way to the Indian wireless headphones market mere months after Sony’s debut in this market with the Sony WF-XB700 and the Sony WF-SP800N. While these two true wireless earphones are extremely competent solutions from the company, the Sony WF-1000XM3 is a whole class apart since it comes integrated with Sony’s lauded QN1e chip and a cornucopia of premium features as well. Sony launched the WF-1000XM3 which has the same branding as the acclaimed over-ear headphone counterpart, the Sony WH-1000XM3. These earphones are targeted towards audio enthusiasts who listen to music on the go or even in the comfort of their own home or workspace. They directly compete with premium true wireless solutions from brands such as Apple, Sennheiser and Jabra. They are priced pretty competitively at Rs 19,990 (Rs 17,990 on Amazon India at the time of writing), which undercuts the price of noise-cancelling competitors such as the Apple AirPods Pro and the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. While the Jabra Elite Active 75t earbuds are cheaper, they do miss out on ANC. So, the question remains, how do these earphones stack up against its premium competitors when it comes to sound quality, build, and features? Let’s find out.

Build and design

Judging in terms of the elegance of the design alone, the Sony WF-1000XM3 exudes an air of sophistication and class. The dual-tone, copper and black (or silver and white) finish is eye-catching and aesthetically appealing. Still, both the charging case and the earbuds aren’t as discreet or dainty as the Jabra Elite Active 75t or the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus.

The charging case is not what we’d term as pocketable, owing to its rather sizable form factor, however, the copper lid and the matte black, rubberised bottom feel great to the touch and are also quite slip-resistant. The bottom part of the case features rounded corners which means that the case doesn’t stand upright and needs to be laid down flat instead. The bottom of the case also features a USB Type-C charging port.

The magnets on the lid and within the case for the earbuds are strong and quite resilient. Not only do the earbuds plonk into the case satisfyingly thanks to the strong magnets, but the case’s lid also shuts with an audible snap. This is also one of the easiest charging cases to open one-handed, which is a true testament to Sony’s design chops since the magnets are actually very strong. The front of the case also features an NFC logo (which you can when the case is open). So, simply tapping an NFC-enabled phone to the case will trigger the pairing process.

The earbuds feature an elongated rounded design on the back, resembling a pill, while the top tapers into the angled earphone nozzle. The back panel on each pill-shaped earbud houses the Sony logo, embellished in copper and a circular touch control panel. The touch controls are accessible via both earbuds and by default, the left earbud cycles between Noise Cancelling and Ambient Sound modes while the right one controls music playback (pause, play, skip tracks, etc). These controls are customisable via the Sony | Headphones Connect app. More on the customisable touch controls later.

Within the buds, there’s a dual-microphone array that combats external noise and Sony’s lauded processor, the QN1e. The chip facilitates 24-bit audio signal processing and also acts as a DAC. According to the company, this improves energy efficiency, resulting in better battery life.

Much like the earphone’s over-ear sibling, the Sony WH-1000XM3, the earphones also allow you to enter an Awareness mode by simply pressing and holding the left touch panel. This effectively decreases the volume of the music or media that’s playing and invokes Ambient Noise for as long as your finger stays on the panel. In addition to this nifty feature, the earphones also support Auto pause/play abilities where removing either earbud from your ear will pause the media and putting the bud back on will resume it. This is achieved by employing a proximity sensor within the buds that detects when the buds are inside the ear.

Overall, the Sony WF-1000XM3 noise-cancelling true wireless in-ears exude a premium look and feel and also come packed with an array of features that enhance user experience such as customisable touch controls, awareness mode and auto-pause/play. However, as premium as the Sony WF-1000XM3 may look, they are slightly bulkier than some competitors. So, how does this bulkiness affect the overall comfort and fit of the buds? Let’s find out.

Comfort and fit

In terms of comfort, the Sony WF-1000XM3 works wonders for most ear shapes and sizes. The earbuds need to be twisted into place and are secured by the very structure of your ear. How? The company employs something they call a Tri-hold design where the shape of the buds come in contact with three points within your ear. Not only does this help in achieving a snug fit, but it also allows for optimal pressure and airflow for enhanced comfort. We listened to music for 4-5 hours continuously without feeling any overbearing discomfort at all, which is commendable.

Now, the buds, due to their size, do stick out of the ear considerably and don’t come equipped with silicone wings as on the Sports SP-800N model. So, you would think that these buds would come loose during intense activities. However, in our tests, we found that most medium or large-sized ears faced no fit issues even during moderate to high-intensity activities due to the ergonomic angled nozzles and ‘Tri-hold’ shape of the buds. However, some smaller sized ears may face minor issues with fit, such as the ‘feeling’ of being loose or occasionally slipping out of the ear.

To possibly combat this, Sony has provided a vast array of silicone and foam earbud tips that we suggest you thoroughly experiment with. The reviewer, who has smaller-sized ears, didn’t find any of the regular silicone tips snug enough to inspire confidence during intense activities. However, the small-sized foam tip provided better seal and kept the bud in the ear securely even during light jogs and runs, which is more than what we’d expect from buds that aren’t categorically ‘Sports’ earbuds.

Nevertheless, as secure as the fit is for most ears, we’d advise against using these buds in the gym or in rainy conditions since they lack any sort of IP rating. If you’re looking for earbuds you can exercise with you’d probably want to look into other options such as the Jabra Elite Active 75t, AirPods Pro or even Sony’s WF-SP800N sports true wireless earbuds.

Accompanying app: Sony | Headphones Connect

Sony possibly has one of the most versatile apps for their Bluetooth audio devices - Sony | Headphones Connect. The app houses a plethora of features and customisation options that give you granular control over your headphones. You get access to standard features such as a fully customisable EQ, sound presets, and battery indicators. In addition to these features, you also get access to Adaptive Sound Control (both location and action-based), Ambient Sound controls, customisable touch controls, and 360 Reality Audio. You can even choose to prioritise either Bluetooth connectivity (to avoid stutters) or sound quality. We set this to prioritise sound quality, but never really faced connectivity stutters or lags, which is a win-win.

Now, Adaptive Sound Control is a feature that users of Sony headphones are well-accustomed to. Using AI, the app identifies the activity of the individual - Staying, Walking, Running, or Transport - and then aptly applies the Ambient Sound mode corresponding to the ongoing activity. The resulting sound is completely customisable, we chose to turn Noise Cancelling on in Staying mode, applied Level 10 (customisable up to Level 20) of Ambient Sound in Walking mode, applied Level 20 for running and Noise Cancelling yet again for Transport.

On the newer Sony headsets, including the WF-1000XM3, there’s even Location-based Adaptive Sound Control that identifies the locations you frequent, such as Home, Gym, Office, etc and applies the corresponding Ambient Sound control. You can also choose to apply a particular EQ preset or custom EQ for each of these locations. So, you choose a more bass-forward EQ profile for the gym and a more balanced one for music listening at home.

Adaptive Sound Control, both location and activity-based, worked exceptionally well in our limited testing due to the lockdown. The earphones promptly switch to Walking Mode even if you’re merely walking from one room to another. You can also choose to turn these modes off completely and manually control Ambient Mode and Noise Cancellation via the touch controls on the earbuds.

Speaking of touch controls, we found them to be sufficiently intuitive and pretty responsive. On the left side, we choose to employ Ambient Sound controls - a single tap cycles between Ambient Sound on, Ambient Sound off, and Noise Cancelling on. A long tap and hold activates Quick Attention mode, allowing you to have conversations without pausing media. The right side controls are the follows - single tap pauses/plays music, double-tap takes you to the next song, triple-tap goes to the previous song, and pressing and holding activates Voice Assistant. You can also control call functions via the touch panels.

You can customise controls partially. What we mean by this is that you can completely change the profile of the touches on either side. So, instead of the default Ambient Controls or Playback controls, you can pick between Volume Control, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and nothing assigned. We were disappointed that we couldn’t have both Volume Controls and Ambient Controls at the same time and had to choose between what we consider integral functions.

The app even features 360 Reality Audio Setup which can analyse the shape of your ears and reproduce the best sound for your ears. We didn’t try out the feature much due to lack of supporting apps. The app also lets you toggle on or off DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) HX functionality, which functions as a DAC and amplifier, that effectively upscales compressed audio files and restores subjective detail to music on even streaming platforms such as Google Play Music or Spotify. However, the company has dropped aptX (normal, HD or LL) or even Sony’s own LDAC codec support in favour of DSEE HX which is a bit disappointing. Still, DSEE HX sort of makes up for the omission since it does a pretty good job at recovering detail from lossy music. Sony has employed 24-bit audio signal processing on these earphones as well, which in conjunction with DSEE HX produces pretty top-notch sound.

Overall, the earphones can definitely be used without downloading the app, but why would you? With the vast amount of features and customisability the app affords you, it would be a shame to ignore it. We were especially impressed with the Adaptive Sound Control that worked pretty much flawlessly. Additionally, the ability to control the amount of Ambient Sound you want to let in is pretty useful.

Noise Cancellation and Ambient Sound

The app comes with plenty of customisations that allow you to utilise it’s two headlining features - Noise Cancellation and Ambient Sound - to the fullest and when most needed. Customisations aside, the quality of these two sound modes are what sets Sony apart from most truly wireless earphones that come equipped with these features.

Noise Cancellation on the Sony WF-1000XM3 is truly exceptional for in-ears. Pretty much the best noise-cancelling you can hope for in earphones. We weren’t really able to test them out in the noisy Mumbai locals, but we did try the noise cancelling under various circumstances with varied environmental sounds such as AC drone in a room, rainy conditions, full-speed fans, traffic and horns of vehicles, and even people talking in the background. The Sony WF-1000XM3’s noise-cancelling managed to wow us in most of these situations.

The QN1e engine shows its prowess and the diminutive earphones are able to suppress almost every sound and completely silence low-frequency, constant sounds such as AC drones, male voices in the distance, and even full-speed fans. However, the earphones did have an issue suppressing the high-pitched sounds of heavy Mumbai rains and some high-pitched sounds such as a pressure cooker going off or the clacking of a mechanical keyboard.

Nevertheless, the noise cancellation abilities of the Sony WF-1000XM3 safely surpass the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 and the Apple AirPods Pro, especially when it comes to low-frequency noise cancellation. Additionally, the passive noise isolation with the foam earbuds is also pretty good which adds to the overall external noise negation. Of course, you cannot compare the noise cancellation to over-ear Sony or Bose cans but for in-ears, these are the best you can currently get.

When it comes to Ambient Sound, the earbuds do pretty well. The external sounds are audibly enhanced but the effect is somewhat artificial and could be jarring to some. To combat this, you can easily reduce the Ambient Sound levels. We found around 10-12 to be a comfortable experience, where we could hear our surroundings pretty well, but it also didn’t sound overly artificial.

Performance - sound quality, microphone and connectivity

The Sony WF-1000XM3 surprisingly doesn’t feature the kind of sound profile you’d expect from the company. Sony is known for its bass-forward audio headsets where the low-end frequencies definitely call the shots. However, on these premium true wireless headphones, the company has gone for a vibrant, yet balanced sound profile with punchy bass response, detailed mids and vocals and soaring highs.

Both the bass and the mids frequencies are slightly overemphasised which combats possible auditory masking in the mids since both are at about the same loudness levels. In bass-heavy hip-hop or EDM tracks, the punchiness of the bass is undeniable, yet it is controlled in such a way that it never reaches muddy territories. Tracks such as Billie Eilish’s bad guy sound sublime with the right amount of punchiness and extreme detail in the vocals. You can hear even the soft breaths she takes between lines despite the continuous, usually overpowering bass beats.

The vocals and mid-ranged instruments sound rich and detailed, however, some low-ranged vocals can occasionally be masked slightly. The 6mm drivers exude clarity in the mids, with lead guitars or other instruments and vocals sounding great in most genres. Podcasts also sound great owing to the smooth mid-range performance. However, if you’re a bass lover who’s used to much darker sound and thumpy bass, these earphones may disappoint you. Still, you can always tweak the EQ as per your preference.

The treble frequencies also have been extended minutely which affects how instruments such as tambourines and cymbals sound in conjunction with vocals and lows. In Hysteria by Muse, the cymbals are clear despite there being a number of instruments and strong vocals in the mix. With noise cancellation on, the sound profile doesn’t change too much but better isolation means you can hear key song elements much better.

The imaging on these earphones is fantastic. In Selkies by Between the Buried and Me, the instruments can be distinguished and are placed pretty accurately. The soundstage is decent, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 still come with better soundstage with more width and height as well.

Now, coming to the microphone for call quality and recordings, the Sony WF-1000XM3 does a pretty good job. The voices are relayed quite well through both earbuds and the speaker’s voice doesn’t sound muffled or distant. However, background sounds are easily picked up and relayed to the receiver. We dictated a paragraph in Google Keep and speech intelligently is pretty decent as well. However, the Jabra Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t definitely have better microphones for calls.

Finally, coming to the Bluetooth connectivity, the earphones are powered by Bluetooth v5.0 and we never experienced any sort of lags, skips or stutters in the connection. When watching videos on YouTube and Netflix, we experienced slight latency, however, it is barely noticeable. Additionally, the Bluetooth range is also pretty good. The company claims 33 feet of transmission range, without obstacles of course. Within the reviewer’s home, the connection managed to stay put through a wall or two in between the earphones and the source device, which is decent.

Battery life

The battery life of the Sony WF-1000XM3 is also pretty good. With ANC turned on, the company claims about 6 hours of playback on a single charge and with ANC off, the numbers are bumped up to 8 hours. The charging case stores 3 additional charges, netting you a total of 24 hours with ANC turned on and a whopping 32 hours with ANC off. The charging case also comes with Quick Charging capabilities where a 10-minute charge provides over an hour of playback.

In our tests, with mixed usage of ANC, Ambient Mode and Ambient mode off, the earphones lasted about 6.5 hours and the charging case charged the earphones 3 times over and still had some juice left. This is pretty comparable to the Apple AirPods Pro and is significantly higher than the battery life of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2. Additionally, the buds go from empty to full charge in about an hour and the charging case can be topped off in 3 and a half hours from empty.

Bottomline

Verdict

There’s a lot to love about these tiny, unassuming pair of true wireless earphones including their compact charging case and buds, aptX and voice assistant support, warm, fresh sound profile and an IPX5 rating. However, they do come with their fair share of hitches such as the spotty connectivity at times, muddy lows and disappointing microphone performance. Still, for a pair of earphones costing Rs 2,999, these issues are acceptable and we quite enjoyed our time with the TWS earphones from Boult.

Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds detailed review

The budget true wireless segment is a rapidly booming market in the audio industry with numerous companies such as Noise, Realme, Boat, and Redmi offering a wealth of options. Boult Audio’s new true wireless offering, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds is priced competitively at Rs 2,999 and is looking to cement themselves in this category as one of the lucrative options. With features such as aptX support, IPX5 rating, and others, the Airbass Livebuds indeed is an option that shouldn’t be overlooked by the price-conscious consumer. However, how do these earphones perform in the real world and what’s their sound quality like? Let’s find out in our review.

Build and design

Sporting a diminutive and compact design, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds are quite pleasing to look at. The pill-shaped charging case is one of the smallest we’ve reviewed so far and it is also one of the lightest. Despite the budgetary price point, the materials on the case feel quite pleasing to the touch. They have a rubberised texture along with a textured line design on top of the case. The Boult Audio logo also sits on top of the case, in white.

The back of the charging case features the micro-USB port and the bottom houses a dimple which allows the case to sit firmly against surfaces. The magnets inside the case are strong, however, the plastic hinge mechanism to open and close the case feels slightly flimsy.

There are also four droplet-shaped LEDs that indicate the battery levels of the charging case. The design of these is quite unique and aesthetically-pleasing. The indents for the earbuds on the top lid of the case are covered with a thin foam material while the rest of the insides are also made out of plastic.

The earbuds feature an oblong shape and look quite sleek and streamlined. The eartips are angled considerably which makes the earphones very comfortable to wear, even over extended periods of usage. Boult Audio also provides three extra pairs of silicone eartips that ensure that most users get the best possible fit.

The top of each earbud houses a physical button that are used for music and call controls. So, you can use these multifunction buttons to pause/play music, seek tracks, increase and decrease volume, answer/decline calls and even summon your phone’s voice assistant. The controls are simple and intuitive, however, the buttons do need to be pushed a fair bit which causes the buds to dig inside your ear.

The fit is fairly snug, however, the lack of ear hooks or wings and the overtly angled tips can cause them to slip out when working out or running. However, they stayed put during mild to moderate activities such as walking around the house and even light jogging. They’re also IPX5 rated, so they’re resistant to sweat and light splashes.

Features

At Rs 2,999, you wouldn’t expect these earphones to host too many features. And, they don’t. However, they do come equipped with some of the essential features and even some surprising ones at this cost. Firstly, they are powered by Bluetooth v5.0 and sport a Bluetooth transmission range of 10m or 33 feet. This is impressive for budget TWS solutions since Bluetooth 4.2 is usually found on budget TWS products.

Another impressive feature is the sizable battery life. Owing to the small form factor of both, the charging case and the earbuds, you wouldn’t expect these earphones to sport an impressive battery life. But, they do. As per the company, the earphones come with a battery life of 6 hours on the buds alone, and 24 hours in total including the charging case, which is pretty impressive. In our tests, the earphones played music for about 5 and a half hours on a single charge and the case provided three extra charges to full. The only disappointment on the battery and charging front is the inclusion of a micro-USB charging cable instead of a Type-C cable.

The Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds also come with Qualcomm aptX HD audio support, which is extremely lucrative in budget true wireless earphones. Additionally, they’re also rated IPX5 (as mentioned above), come with physical controls for music playback and calling, and come with voice assistant support.

Performance

Featuring a warm sound profile, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds features pretty decent sound quality for the price point. The Qualcomm aptX support definitely helps, providing the earphones with a fuller and relatively balanced sound. The mids are sufficiently detailed, vocals are crisp and well accentuated, and the highs aren’t too tinny. However, the lows and bass response, while energetic and punchy, can tend to sound quite muddy at times.

In Pull me Under by Dream Theatre, the bass kicks sound boomy and muddled and deteriorate the overall quality of the track, even though the vocals and mid-frequency instruments are very well produced. Vocal-centric tracks such as Hello by Adele are the most well-reproduced tracks on these earphones with sharp and precise vocal reproduction.

Bass response in Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars is very energetic but can cloud the mids due to their muddy nature. There’s also distortion in the bass when the volume levels are on the higher side. Nevertheless, some bassheads might enjoy the boomy thumps the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds produce.

The soundstage on these earphones is surprisingly wide and imaging is also quite good. Instruments in crowded tracks are quite easily distinguishable and tracks such as Hotel California sound divine with the wide staging. Passive isolation is also great due to the snug fit.

Microphone quality, though, is disappointing with the caller sounding muffled and distorted on many occasions. Also, we faced a bunch of connectivity snags even though these earphones come equipped with Bluetooth v5.0. Two prominent connection issues we faced were - the earphones occasionally disconnected from the source altogether and would only connect back again when we manually did it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, and the earbuds sometimes stayed connected to the phone even when they were put into the case, even though the lid was closed.

Bottomline

There’s a lot to love about these tiny, unassuming pair of true wireless earphones including their compact charging case and buds, aptX and voice assistant support, warm, fresh sound profile and an IPX5 rating. However, they do come with their fair share of hitches such as the spotty connectivity at times, muddy lows and disappointing microphone performance. Still, for a pair of earphones costing Rs 2,999, these issues are acceptable and we quite enjoyed our time with the TWS earphones from Boult.

Early trends in SGX Nifty indicated a negative opening of Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday. Nifty Futures were trading 22.80 points or 0.19 per cent at 11,512.20 on Singaporean Exchange.

US fed meet, RBI governor, shaktikanta dasConsider the prevailing scenario, we suggest keeping a close watch on the outcome of the US Fed meet for cues

Domestic equity market benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 were starting at a negative opening on Wednesday taking cues from mixed Asian markets. Market participants will keenly watch the two-day US Federal Reserve meeting which is going to end today. Besides, newsflow on the India-China front, developments around COVID-19 vaccine, trends in coronavirus cases, oil prices and other global cues will set the market direction for today. Investors will also watch RBI Governor’s address to Ficci. “The participation of the banking pack is critical for any directional move in the index. Consider the prevailing scenario, we suggest keeping a close watch on the outcome of the US Fed meet for cues,” said Ajit Mishra, VP – Research, Religare Broking Ltd.

SGX Nifty in red: Early trends in SGX Nifty indicated a negative opening of Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday. Nifty Futures were trading 22.80 points or 0.19 per cent at 11,512.20 on Singaporean Exchange.

Bulk and block deals: Rajasthan Global Securities bought 3,83,071 shares in the company at Rs 66.41 per share. While Societe Generale bought 15,25,000 shares of Hexaware Technologies at Rs 443.01 per share. Similarly, Nippon India Mutual Fund A/C Nippon India Small Cap Fund lapped up 5,46,650 equity shares in of BSE at Rs 554 per share. However, Deutsche Boerse Aktiengesellschaft offloaded another 7,86,933 shares in the BSE at Rs 554.36 per share.

FII and DII: On Tuesday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,170.89 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 895.63 crore on a net basis, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.

Global markets: Asian peers were seen trading mixed in early morning trade on Wednesday. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 was marginally higher while the Topix index advanced 0.21 per cent. On the other hand, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.1 per cent. In overnight trade on Wall Street, US stocks jumped as investors anticipated the Federal Reserve would stick with its supportive policy stance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.01 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 0.52 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.21 per cent.

Technical take: “The short term trend of Nifty is range bound with positive bias. Renewed buying enthusiasm could only occur above 11600 and that is likely to pull the market towards 11800 levels in a quick period of time. Important lower supports to be watched at 11380 and a breach below this support could trigger more weakness in the near term,” said Nagaraj Shetti, Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

Verdict

The A77 is definitely a good buy if you're looking for something sturdy, with a good overall balance of features and performance. While the A77 is a slight disappointment in the noise handling department, it definitely makes up for it with the fast AF (especially if coupled up with one of Sony lenses that feature Super Sonic Wave Motors) and stellar video quality. We'd recommend buying the body only and saving the extra 30K (A77+16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit is for INR 99,999) and investing it in a nice lens, like a 50mm f/1.4 prime instead of a kit lens that suffers from poor optical quality.

Sony Alpha 77 detailed review

Sony’s acquisition of Konica Minolta back in 2006 garnered a lot of mixed reactions from the global audience. While many felt that the cameras to come forth from Sony would just be Konica Minoltas with the Sony logo slapped onto them, there were some who felt Sony was about to ruin a good thing. Sony did not take these concerns lightly and though their initial few cameras had a strong resemblance to Konica Minolta (the Alpha 700 comes to mind) products, Sony has slowly tried to infuse their new line-up with the best of both the worlds and the Alpha 77 is a testament of that fact.

The Sony SLT-A77 (or the Alpha 77, or the A77 or the God of all crops cameras as we might want to call it) is built on the tough DNA of the Konica Minolta for sure, but takes on its own ergonomics along with being infused with Sony’s unmatched technological know-how. The amount of incredible features the A77 packs is absolutely mind boggling (at one point, we wondered if pressing a button would make it transform into a mech or something. Didn’t happen though). There’s a few firsts, a few refinements of previously discarded technology and all of it plays rather well together. We got our eager hands on this puppy/beast (pick one!) and got cracking to see how well the various amazing features come together and whether they play well together or not.

Body and Ergonomics
With both Nikon and Canon switching over to polycarbonate as material of choice for the APS-C DSLRs, it was nice to see Sony sticking to the magnesium alloy goodness. The tough stuff definitely lends its ‘tough-stuff’ feel to the camera as you can feel the ‘cold-steel’ under your fingers. The areas where the hand grips the camera is wrapped in some generous rubberized material, but we love the feeling that our camera is made of stuff that doesn’t just break after taking a tumble (can’t say the same about the insides though, obviously). The camera surely is built solid, but all that magnesium alloy toughness is useless against the assault of the elements; specifically water and dust. Sony has generously tossed in that pro-grade weather sealing that’s normally reserved for the elite-pro-grade cameras. Yes, that’s right, pro-grade weather sealing on an APS-C DSLR. The sheer joy made us want to shoot with it standing under the shower, but we chose to exercise restraint.

The weather sealing isn’t all that sets this DSLR apart. The button layout favors one handed use, with all buttons on the back being placed on the right side of the screen. At first, they look like Sony might be trying to just cram everything in there, but after a few days’ worth of use, we realized just how well placed these buttons are. They were all well within the reach of our moderately sized thumb. The joystick at the back works adequately well to move the focus points around as well. There is a dedicated movie button that instantly starts recording video, which is a nice touch. Only the menu button finds a spot on the left of the viewfinder, but it isn’t inconvenient to access in any way.
Unconventional in DSLRs, Sony has added two horizontal dials, one on the back and one on the front of the hand grip to change aperture and shutter speed values, something Nikon users might be familiar with. The mode dial on the top left has a toothed rubber texture, which makes turning the dial a lot easier as it has a high amount of resistance. We welcome the heightened level of resistance on the dial as we have often experienced the mode dial changing positions when it was hanging off our shoulders (on several other cameras, not the A77).

The top LCD is quite rich in information (like most top LCDs) and is surrounded by the ISO, exposure bracketing, white balance and drive/timer buttons. There is even a button to toggle between dedicated liveview or viewfinder views, but it’s oddly placed on the rise of the flash, which makes reaching it with the thumb a little difficult. Expect to move the camera away from the eye to reach this function.

Features
The Sony SLT – A77 is infused with a whole load of juicy goodness. The A-77, at the time of announcement, was the first camera to feature a gorgeous 2.4 million dot screen as the viewfinder (electronic viewfinder). One might be inclined to think that Sony’s just throwing fancy features at the users without the actual need, but the EVF serves a crucial piece of tech in the larger scheme of things.

The A77 features an insane burst speed of 12 frames per second, all achieved thanks to the semi translucent mirror that replaces the typical mirror box in a DSLR. Typically, when you shoot, the mirror needs to be pulled up so the light from the lens can hit the sensor to form the image. Burst modes in conventional DSLRs are slower because there is a delay that gets factored in. Camera makers have spent obscene amounts of money in fine tuning the mirror box mechanism to achieve higher frames per second. Sony simply introduced the translucent mirror, effectively boosting the burst speed.

The one drawback of the translucent mirror is that it dims the light in the viewfinder significantly. That’s where the EVF comes in. It removes the dimly lit viewfinder and replaces it with a digital image being rendered through the A77’s liveview engine. The EVF isn’t without its fair share of issues though. Since the image is being digitally rendered, we noticed that any time we shot in relatively low light (around sunset and after), the image in the EVF became extremely noisy. Of course that noise is only due to the liveview engine boosting the display, but it makes reading the digital display a little difficult, especially in low light.

The A77 also uses a fully phase-detection based focusing system, which works better for this sort of a system. The phase detection chip sits on top of the translucent mirror, which feeds it light data constantly. Phase detections works better than classical contrast detection AF as it only needs one reading of the scene to determine where to focus, whereas contrast detection AF requires multiple readings, and hence, moved the lens through the entire focus range.

Another very handy feature Sony has thrown into the A77 is a three-way-swivel-tilt screen. The screen is a 921K dot screen employing Sony’s TruBlack technology which does indeed render images quite well. The screen’s versatility cannot be bound by the words we write to describe its effectiveness. Film-makers will especially appreciate the ways in which they can twist and turn the screen, in order to get angles which were previously a hassle not worth tackling.

Focussing System
The A77 uses a full Phase Detection based AF that does a great job thanks to the constant light stream provided by the translucent mirror. This not only helps with faster focussing, but even shows better tracking results when compared to similar cameras using contrast detect AF. If you’re a proud owner (or owner to be) of the A77, you will get 19 AF-points to play around with, 11 of which are cross type. Cross type AF points are sensitive in both horizontal and vertical orientations, and thus offer better focus locking and tracking that non cross-type AF points.

The AF system can be set in four configurations; Manual (MF), Single Shot (S), Continuous (C) and Automatic (A), all accessible through a dial on the bottom right (if you’re facing the lens mount) . The dial is a nice touch, as its one thing you won’t need to fumble with buttons for. As far as the AF performance of the A77 is concerned, we had no trouble whatsoever, in locking focus, in part, thanks to the built AF-illuminator lamp. We did feel the focus was a bit slow to lock on, but that was mostly a feature of the slow AF motor on the lens (the Sony 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6). Another problem we faced with the focus system was that when using the nav-stick at the back to switch focus points (while looking through the viewfinder), it took nearly half a second for the focus point to switch from the old one to the one adjacent to it. This sluggishness, in our opinion, really cripples the otherwise blazing fast AF system. Hopefully, a firmware update might fix the issue.

Visit page two, to read about the Sony Alpha 77's Image Quality, Video Performance, and Verdict...

Image Quality
There’s a lot at stake when you decide to pack in an obscene amount of pixels into an area as small as an APS-C sensor. The realm of 24 megapixels was something even the full frames stayed away from (at least at the time of announcement). Packing in this many pixels has always been a taboo due to fears of noise quality degrading too quickly. We figured it would be best to see if such effects existed for ourselves.

In our outdoors test, the Sony did well with respect to getting the exposures right. None of our shots felt like there was an exposure bias (towards shadows OR highlights), which left us a little surprised (pleasantly albeit) as we’ve never had a DSLR balance out exposures so well before. We also noticed that the 24 megapixel sensor resolves not just detail, but even dynamic range rather well.

We expected the performance of the camera to be good when shooting in good lighting conditions at nominal ISOs, so we decided to see what the images would look like at higher ISOs. We bumped up the ISO to 3200 and our consequent shots revealed something interesting. While the sensor was not generating any color noise, there was definitely a significant amount of grain. Now this grain wasn’t visible in preview mode, but when we looked at the photos at a 100%, it was surely there.

Even our studio shots confirmed the presence of noise at ISO 3200. In shooting our standard test target, we found that the shadow areas were quick to develop chrominance and luminance noise. While ISO 3200 just showed signs of noise, which can easily be rectified using any noise reduction tool, higher ISOs were not so forgiving. Interestingly, ISO 6400 exhibited a slight color shift, with the image becoming quite warm on the top half of the frame. The same behavior was prevalent at ISO 12800 and ISO 16000 as well, only, in these cases, the color shift was applied to the entire image and the noise had reduced the images to grainy mess. We’d recommend caution when pushing the ISO levels over 3200, especially in low light. However, shots up to ISO 5000 can be salvaged using noise reduction, without any significant loss in detail.

The flash on the A77 is surprisingly better than most on-camera flashes we’ve come across. It has a guide number of 12 (at ISO 100), meaning the flash will have an effective range of about 8 feet (at aperture f/1.4). The range might not seem that impressive, but what is nice about the on board flash is that its illumination is quite even, and the presence of harsh shadows is almost negligible. Unfortunately, all is not peachy in the flash department. While using the stock 16-105mm lens (without a lens hood), we found that the combination cast a lens shadow when zoomed out all the way to 16mm. While the problem doesn’t really exist beyond 85mm, we still feel that the flash could have been designed to not cast such a shadow. With cameras like the Nikon D7000 or the Canon 60D, we didn’t face such problems.

Video
The A77 offer the ability to record full HD footage in either AVCHD format (1920x1080 at 60p,60i and 24p) or MP4 (1440x1080 at 30fps). There is a stereo mic built into the hinge of the flash which records audio pretty well, but unfortunately has a tendency to pick up on wind noise rather easily. The dedicated video button is great to quickly switch into video recording mode.

As good as the video quality is, unfortunately, making the most of the A77’s video system is a little tricky. There is no way to have full manual control over the shutterspeed and aperture while maintaining AF. Activating video recording in any of the PASM modes locks the camera in Program mode, meaning, you get full time autofocus, but no control over the exposures. In order to shoot manually, we had to switch to the dedicated video marker on the mode dial. We can’t figure out why Sony would not allow full time AF to be functional while using manual settings for video. So if you’re going to picking up the A77, know that there is a trade-off between AF and manual exposure for video.

What Else is There
The Alpha 77 is treading on the a territory which has been long been jointly dominated by the Canon 7D and Nikon D7000. The 7D from canon boasts a very impressive focus system with pro-grade tracking capabilities and has been the staple go-to camera for amateur film-makers on a budget. The Nikon D7000 has rivaled the 7D with better overall image quality (with its higher dynamic range and better color depth) and its much lower price point. However, the D7000 cannot match the 7D’s 8 frames per second burst mode.

The three 7’s (Canon 7D, Nikon D7000 and Sony SLT – A77) all share mighty impressive features. If you’re a megapixel nut, then the A77 is the obvious choice hands down. However, if you’re looking for a solid video performer, the 7D might be a better choice, despite the higher price point. The Nikon D7000 does best the other two in overall image quality though. Last but not the least, the A77 is the cheapest of the three (for body only) pricing in at INR 69,999, followed by the Nikon D7000 (INR 79,950) and with Canon 7D being the most expensive of all at INR 87,995. The Alpha does pack more bang for the buck when it comes to features, but the Canon 7D does offer a more solid performance.

Verdict
The Sony SLT – A77 is a monster of a DSLR no doubt. There some impressive firsts and equally astounding innovations packed in here, that seem to work beautifully together. It seems like Sony hasn’t held back one bit in infusing this semi-professional APS-C DSLR with pro grade features, all while keeping the price tag at a modest level.

The A77 is definitely a solid performer for the class it’s pitted into. A high resolution sensor that renders great detail, a mirror-shutter assembly that allows blazing fast burst speeds and a novel focusing system that works faster than the conventional Contrast Detection system makes the A77 a very well rounded semi-pro DSLR. We love the rugged build, the weather sealing and the nice dials. We love the ergonomics. What we didn't like was the mediocre noise performance, especially after seeing how the Nikon D3200 managed to keep noise at bay all the way to ISO 6400 while the Alpha was struggling at ISO 3200 (read our review). The lack of continuous AF while shooting video in Manual mode is quite disappointing, seeing as how Sony is trying to lure in amateur film-makers with the high quality video and the swivel-tilt-turn screen.

For a price of INR 69,990 (for body only), the A77 is definitely a good buy if you’re looking for something sturdy, with a good overall balance of features and performance. While the A77 is a slight disappointment in the noise handling department, it definitely makes up for it with the fast AF (especially if coupled up with one of Sony lenses that feature Super Sonic Wave Motors) and stellar video quality. We’d recommend buying the body only and saving the extra 30K (A77 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit is for INR 99,999) and investing it in a nice lens, like a 50mm f/1.4 prime instead of a kit lens that suffers from poor optical quality.

Kangana Ranaut Hits Back at Jaya Bachchan's Parliament Speech: Which 'Thali' has Industry Given?

Kangana Ranaut has criticised Jaya Bachchan's 'jis thali mein khate hain usmein chhed karte hain' analogy at the Parliament, saying she has made her own space in the industry.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:42 PM IST

Kangana Ranaut has hit back at Jaya Bachchan's speech in the Parliament against people pointing fingers at the industry ovedr various issues. The actress-politician said in the in Rajya Sabha, "People in the entertainment industry are being flogged by social media. People who made their names in the industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree. I hope that govt tells such people not to use this kind of language."

She slammed people who criticise the same industry which have made their careers, using the 'jis thali mein khate hain usmein chhed karte hain' analogy. "Some of the people who have got name and fame has said it is 'gutter'," she said, without naming the individuals but added they should not defame the industry. "It is the film industry that gave name and fame to many people," she said. There is a continuous process to defame the industry for the things done by a handful," she added.

Kangana tweeted in response to Jaya's statement and wrote in Hindi, "Which thali has Jaya ji and her industry given? We got one thali which had a two-minute role, item numbers and one romantic scene, that too after sleeping with the hero. I have taught feminism to this industry, decorated the thali with women-centric and patriotic films. This is my own thali, not yours Jaya ji."

Jaya Bachchan, in her defence of the industry, had also said that it employs many people in different areas and some are highest individual tax payers. The veteran actress, who is married to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, was also upset over comments on social media and the media.

Oracle 'Very Close' To Deal On Tiktok: Donald Trump

US officials had confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance

Washington, United States:

Silicon Valley tech giant Oracle is "very close" to sealing a deal to become the US partner to Chinese-owned video app TikTok to avert a ban in the United States, President Donald Trump said Tuesday.

Trump's comments came a day after US officials confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance ahead of a deadline set by the US president, who has called the app a national security threat.

"I heard they're very close to a deal," Trump told reporters, adding that "we're going to make a decision pretty soon" on whether to approve the tie-up, which would make Oracle a "trusted technology provider" for TikTok.

Details of the deal remained unclear. But the Financial Times reported that ByteDance was to place TikTok's global business in a new US-headquartered company with Oracle investing as a minority shareholder along with other US investors.

CNBC reported the Trump administration could approve the deal as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

If the transaction happens, it would avoid an outright sale of TikTok while giving a stake in the popular app to Oracle, whose founder Larry Ellison is a prominent Trump supporter.

Trump told reporters Tuesday he had "high respect for Larry Ellison."
