Weddings 2.0: And they blessed the couple virtually

The big fat Indian wedding has become leaner, adapting to the new COVID-19 normal.

While weddings have been taking place during Unlock 3.0 with up to 50 real-time guests, now Unlock 4.0 permits social gatherings with a ceiling of 100 guests. After months of lockdown, bookings are accelerating, with weddings bringing cheer to families, as well as the hospitality, fashion and textile sectors.

Actors Prachi Trehan, Manish Raisinghani, Nikhil Siddhartha, Nithiin and Rana Daggubati, director Sujeeth and producer Dil Raju were among those who tied the knot in the last few months. In Bengaluru, weddings of former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son and that of actor Nikhil Gowda were in the spotlight.

There have been several other weddings, away from the celebrity cliques.

VR-enabled weddings
  • Bengaluru-based firm LifeVR which provided the tech support for Rana Daggubati’s wedding, had facilitated a similar VR webcast of actor Venkatesh Daggubati’s daughter Aashritha’s wedding in 2019. For Rana’s wedding, guests were sent VR headsets with customised messages, an explanatory video and text instructions: “We sent them test links prior to the event,” says Abhilash Jain, technical director of LifeVR.
  • The company has so far enabled 300 VR weddings and Abhilash says, “VR is the future for sport, cinema and events but it’s still a niche segment. The pandemic is making a few more people consider the option.”
  • The firm will be hosting VR webcasts of weddings in Jaipur, Udaipur and other cities in the coming months. “When ceremonies are smaller with limited guests, the emotions can be captured better. For VR, it’s important to film in such a way that the viewers, while feeling like they are transported to the actual venue, do not feel dizzy watching through the headset,” adds Abhilash.

Masked getaways

Families now opt for toned down celebrations with fewer ceremonies, at hotels that promise to adhere to hygiene protocols. The norms include maintaining a registry of guest details, temperature checks, individual sanitiser bottles, fresh masks, frequent cleaning of touch points and restrooms, and distanced seating arrangements.

Renu Basu, senior vice president, global sales and marketing IHCL (the parent company of Taj Hotels), states that among the Taj hotels, the properties in Rajasthan, Karnataka and Telangana were among the first to host weddings after lockdown. “Resorts and hotels at drivable distances from cities, for instance, Mahabalipuram from Chennai, Damdama, Rishikesh and Corbett from Delhi as well as the hotel in Nashik that’s a few hours from Mumbai are witnessing a significant number of social celebrations, including weddings,” she says.

Grand Hyatt at Bolgatty Island, Kochi, has been hosting 10-12 weddings a month, says general manager Shrikant Wakharkar: “This is the peak season for weddings in Kerala and we abide by Government regulations to make people feel secure by providing a sanitised environment.”

The Leela Goa is gearing up to host 15 destination weddings between October 2020 and April 2021. The families that have booked these weddings are from Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. General manager Shridhar Nair says the fear psychosis which loomed large in the early phase of the pandemic is waning: “People want to enjoy their special occasion while taking precautions. We will be offering Bureau Veritas (an inspection and certification company) certified sanitisation for the events.”

In Delhi, Amaara Farms has been hosting weddings in its open-air venues. “When we hosted the first wedding after the long lockdown, there was a lingering fear; but the families soon began enjoying their special occasion. Enquiries are on the rise now. Most weddings we have hosted involve either the bride or the groom’s family from Delhi and others driving down to reach the venue,” says founder Shivan Gupta. He notes that there has been a shift in conversation, moving away from the ostentatious nature of the event to focus on safety and hygiene.

Hotels now offer e-concierge and virtual tours of locations. The F&B services have also been tweaked. Guests are asked to keep their masks on while going to the buffet counters. A few properties offer pre-plated starters and main courses instead of buffets.

Like many other sectors, the hospitality sector also bore the brunt as business plummeted during lockdown. To attract more guests, hotels stated that they are offering wedding packages at prices 10% to 20% lower than that of 2019. Sanitisation and hygiene come at no additional costs.

Dressing up for Zoom

Miriam Matthen who recently got married at the Hyatt Bolgatty Island talks with happiness when she recollects her wedding.

Originally scheduled as a destination wedding in April 2020, lockdown forced the families to change plans four times and finally, she was glad that the ceremony could be organised in her home town. Friends and family participated in the celebrations via an online link. “Some of them even dressed up to keep with the celebratory mood,” she says.

Masks in white and gold fabric that is synonymous with kasavu saris of Kerala, greeted the 50 guests at their flower-draped open-air venue, anchored by the hotel’s villas.

When bridal couture spells luxury, the accompanying masks too have to look the part. Designers are busy making customised masks that match the ensembles, with zardozi and all finery. Masks with embroidery and embellishments that match the lehenga or sari, are now part of the trousseau.

Samhita Gadde who got married mid-August at a resort on the outskirts of Hyderabad says her family and that of the groom were concerned that none of the invitees fall sick, having come across news reports of families testing positive after attending social gatherings.

“We had a small gathering but booked a hall that would, in normal circumstances, accommodate 1,000 people,” she says. The pre-wedding ceremonies like the mehendi were held outdoors. Their initial plan, before the pandemic, was to have around 3,000 guests. “But the scaled-down celebration turned out to be fun; we could talk to all the guests. We had a live webcast for those whom we couldn’t invite,” she says.

Bengaluru-based Nilma Dileepan, a wedding designer, has been organising weddings with small gatherings at venues as varied as backyards of homes to a presidential suite of a five-star hotel.

“Around 75% of the people have cut down their budgets and millennials are enjoying the simple weddings that they always wanted. Sometimes the requests are for arrangements within ₹50,000 or a lakh of rupees. There’s more attention to masks, sanitisers, chair décor and other props. Couples are also open to mindful, sustainable choices like using local flowers in terracotta pots and chalk boards as opposed to flex boards,” she says.

Bridal couture

The fashion and textile industry which is still dealing with piles of pending stock from lockdown is also limping back in to action, thanks to weddings.

In mid-July, Tarun Tahiliani showcased his bridal-festive collection ‘Pieces of You’ through a live fashion show on Instagram.

Couturier JJ Valaya who recently launched his e-commerce portal notes that buyer interest is back. Valaya admits that many in the fraternity thought this year would be a washout and had decided to focus on the next season. But he was pleasantly surprised when the footfall at his stores showed an increase: “People are connecting through the video walk-through. I recently dressed-up a bride from Sri Lanka, whose wedding ensemble was decided and arranged for, online.”

Verdict

There’s a lot to love about these tiny, unassuming pair of true wireless earphones including their compact charging case and buds, aptX and voice assistant support, warm, fresh sound profile and an IPX5 rating. However, they do come with their fair share of hitches such as the spotty connectivity at times, muddy lows and disappointing microphone performance. Still, for a pair of earphones costing Rs 2,999, these issues are acceptable and we quite enjoyed our time with the TWS earphones from Boult.

Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds detailed review

The budget true wireless segment is a rapidly booming market in the audio industry with numerous companies such as Noise, Realme, Boat, and Redmi offering a wealth of options. Boult Audio’s new true wireless offering, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds is priced competitively at Rs 2,999 and is looking to cement themselves in this category as one of the lucrative options. With features such as aptX support, IPX5 rating, and others, the Airbass Livebuds indeed is an option that shouldn’t be overlooked by the price-conscious consumer. However, how do these earphones perform in the real world and what’s their sound quality like? Let’s find out in our review.

Build and design

Sporting a diminutive and compact design, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds are quite pleasing to look at. The pill-shaped charging case is one of the smallest we’ve reviewed so far and it is also one of the lightest. Despite the budgetary price point, the materials on the case feel quite pleasing to the touch. They have a rubberised texture along with a textured line design on top of the case. The Boult Audio logo also sits on top of the case, in white.

The back of the charging case features the micro-USB port and the bottom houses a dimple which allows the case to sit firmly against surfaces. The magnets inside the case are strong, however, the plastic hinge mechanism to open and close the case feels slightly flimsy.

There are also four droplet-shaped LEDs that indicate the battery levels of the charging case. The design of these is quite unique and aesthetically-pleasing. The indents for the earbuds on the top lid of the case are covered with a thin foam material while the rest of the insides are also made out of plastic.

The earbuds feature an oblong shape and look quite sleek and streamlined. The eartips are angled considerably which makes the earphones very comfortable to wear, even over extended periods of usage. Boult Audio also provides three extra pairs of silicone eartips that ensure that most users get the best possible fit.

The top of each earbud houses a physical button that are used for music and call controls. So, you can use these multifunction buttons to pause/play music, seek tracks, increase and decrease volume, answer/decline calls and even summon your phone’s voice assistant. The controls are simple and intuitive, however, the buttons do need to be pushed a fair bit which causes the buds to dig inside your ear.

The fit is fairly snug, however, the lack of ear hooks or wings and the overtly angled tips can cause them to slip out when working out or running. However, they stayed put during mild to moderate activities such as walking around the house and even light jogging. They’re also IPX5 rated, so they’re resistant to sweat and light splashes.

Features

At Rs 2,999, you wouldn’t expect these earphones to host too many features. And, they don’t. However, they do come equipped with some of the essential features and even some surprising ones at this cost. Firstly, they are powered by Bluetooth v5.0 and sport a Bluetooth transmission range of 10m or 33 feet. This is impressive for budget TWS solutions since Bluetooth 4.2 is usually found on budget TWS products.

Another impressive feature is the sizable battery life. Owing to the small form factor of both, the charging case and the earbuds, you wouldn’t expect these earphones to sport an impressive battery life. But, they do. As per the company, the earphones come with a battery life of 6 hours on the buds alone, and 24 hours in total including the charging case, which is pretty impressive. In our tests, the earphones played music for about 5 and a half hours on a single charge and the case provided three extra charges to full. The only disappointment on the battery and charging front is the inclusion of a micro-USB charging cable instead of a Type-C cable.

The Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds also come with Qualcomm aptX HD audio support, which is extremely lucrative in budget true wireless earphones. Additionally, they’re also rated IPX5 (as mentioned above), come with physical controls for music playback and calling, and come with voice assistant support.

Performance

Featuring a warm sound profile, the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds features pretty decent sound quality for the price point. The Qualcomm aptX support definitely helps, providing the earphones with a fuller and relatively balanced sound. The mids are sufficiently detailed, vocals are crisp and well accentuated, and the highs aren’t too tinny. However, the lows and bass response, while energetic and punchy, can tend to sound quite muddy at times.

In Pull me Under by Dream Theatre, the bass kicks sound boomy and muddled and deteriorate the overall quality of the track, even though the vocals and mid-frequency instruments are very well produced. Vocal-centric tracks such as Hello by Adele are the most well-reproduced tracks on these earphones with sharp and precise vocal reproduction.

Bass response in Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars is very energetic but can cloud the mids due to their muddy nature. There’s also distortion in the bass when the volume levels are on the higher side. Nevertheless, some bassheads might enjoy the boomy thumps the Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds produce.

The soundstage on these earphones is surprisingly wide and imaging is also quite good. Instruments in crowded tracks are quite easily distinguishable and tracks such as Hotel California sound divine with the wide staging. Passive isolation is also great due to the snug fit.

Microphone quality, though, is disappointing with the caller sounding muffled and distorted on many occasions. Also, we faced a bunch of connectivity snags even though these earphones come equipped with Bluetooth v5.0. Two prominent connection issues we faced were - the earphones occasionally disconnected from the source altogether and would only connect back again when we manually did it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, and the earbuds sometimes stayed connected to the phone even when they were put into the case, even though the lid was closed.

Bottomline

There’s a lot to love about these tiny, unassuming pair of true wireless earphones including their compact charging case and buds, aptX and voice assistant support, warm, fresh sound profile and an IPX5 rating. However, they do come with their fair share of hitches such as the spotty connectivity at times, muddy lows and disappointing microphone performance. Still, for a pair of earphones costing Rs 2,999, these issues are acceptable and we quite enjoyed our time with the TWS earphones from Boult.

Early trends in SGX Nifty indicated a negative opening of Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday. Nifty Futures were trading 22.80 points or 0.19 per cent at 11,512.20 on Singaporean Exchange.

US fed meet, RBI governor, shaktikanta dasConsider the prevailing scenario, we suggest keeping a close watch on the outcome of the US Fed meet for cues

Domestic equity market benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 were starting at a negative opening on Wednesday taking cues from mixed Asian markets. Market participants will keenly watch the two-day US Federal Reserve meeting which is going to end today. Besides, newsflow on the India-China front, developments around COVID-19 vaccine, trends in coronavirus cases, oil prices and other global cues will set the market direction for today. Investors will also watch RBI Governor’s address to Ficci. “The participation of the banking pack is critical for any directional move in the index. Consider the prevailing scenario, we suggest keeping a close watch on the outcome of the US Fed meet for cues,” said Ajit Mishra, VP – Research, Religare Broking Ltd.

SGX Nifty in red: Early trends in SGX Nifty indicated a negative opening of Sensex and Nifty on Wednesday. Nifty Futures were trading 22.80 points or 0.19 per cent at 11,512.20 on Singaporean Exchange.

Bulk and block deals: Rajasthan Global Securities bought 3,83,071 shares in the company at Rs 66.41 per share. While Societe Generale bought 15,25,000 shares of Hexaware Technologies at Rs 443.01 per share. Similarly, Nippon India Mutual Fund A/C Nippon India Small Cap Fund lapped up 5,46,650 equity shares in of BSE at Rs 554 per share. However, Deutsche Boerse Aktiengesellschaft offloaded another 7,86,933 shares in the BSE at Rs 554.36 per share.

FII and DII: On Tuesday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,170.89 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 895.63 crore on a net basis, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.

Global markets: Asian peers were seen trading mixed in early morning trade on Wednesday. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 was marginally higher while the Topix index advanced 0.21 per cent. On the other hand, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.1 per cent. In overnight trade on Wall Street, US stocks jumped as investors anticipated the Federal Reserve would stick with its supportive policy stance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.01 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 0.52 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.21 per cent.

Technical take: “The short term trend of Nifty is range bound with positive bias. Renewed buying enthusiasm could only occur above 11600 and that is likely to pull the market towards 11800 levels in a quick period of time. Important lower supports to be watched at 11380 and a breach below this support could trigger more weakness in the near term,” said Nagaraj Shetti, Technical Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

Verdict

The A77 is definitely a good buy if you're looking for something sturdy, with a good overall balance of features and performance. While the A77 is a slight disappointment in the noise handling department, it definitely makes up for it with the fast AF (especially if coupled up with one of Sony lenses that feature Super Sonic Wave Motors) and stellar video quality. We'd recommend buying the body only and saving the extra 30K (A77+16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit is for INR 99,999) and investing it in a nice lens, like a 50mm f/1.4 prime instead of a kit lens that suffers from poor optical quality.

Sony Alpha 77 detailed review

Sony’s acquisition of Konica Minolta back in 2006 garnered a lot of mixed reactions from the global audience. While many felt that the cameras to come forth from Sony would just be Konica Minoltas with the Sony logo slapped onto them, there were some who felt Sony was about to ruin a good thing. Sony did not take these concerns lightly and though their initial few cameras had a strong resemblance to Konica Minolta (the Alpha 700 comes to mind) products, Sony has slowly tried to infuse their new line-up with the best of both the worlds and the Alpha 77 is a testament of that fact.

The Sony SLT-A77 (or the Alpha 77, or the A77 or the God of all crops cameras as we might want to call it) is built on the tough DNA of the Konica Minolta for sure, but takes on its own ergonomics along with being infused with Sony’s unmatched technological know-how. The amount of incredible features the A77 packs is absolutely mind boggling (at one point, we wondered if pressing a button would make it transform into a mech or something. Didn’t happen though). There’s a few firsts, a few refinements of previously discarded technology and all of it plays rather well together. We got our eager hands on this puppy/beast (pick one!) and got cracking to see how well the various amazing features come together and whether they play well together or not.

Body and Ergonomics
With both Nikon and Canon switching over to polycarbonate as material of choice for the APS-C DSLRs, it was nice to see Sony sticking to the magnesium alloy goodness. The tough stuff definitely lends its ‘tough-stuff’ feel to the camera as you can feel the ‘cold-steel’ under your fingers. The areas where the hand grips the camera is wrapped in some generous rubberized material, but we love the feeling that our camera is made of stuff that doesn’t just break after taking a tumble (can’t say the same about the insides though, obviously). The camera surely is built solid, but all that magnesium alloy toughness is useless against the assault of the elements; specifically water and dust. Sony has generously tossed in that pro-grade weather sealing that’s normally reserved for the elite-pro-grade cameras. Yes, that’s right, pro-grade weather sealing on an APS-C DSLR. The sheer joy made us want to shoot with it standing under the shower, but we chose to exercise restraint.

The weather sealing isn’t all that sets this DSLR apart. The button layout favors one handed use, with all buttons on the back being placed on the right side of the screen. At first, they look like Sony might be trying to just cram everything in there, but after a few days’ worth of use, we realized just how well placed these buttons are. They were all well within the reach of our moderately sized thumb. The joystick at the back works adequately well to move the focus points around as well. There is a dedicated movie button that instantly starts recording video, which is a nice touch. Only the menu button finds a spot on the left of the viewfinder, but it isn’t inconvenient to access in any way.
Unconventional in DSLRs, Sony has added two horizontal dials, one on the back and one on the front of the hand grip to change aperture and shutter speed values, something Nikon users might be familiar with. The mode dial on the top left has a toothed rubber texture, which makes turning the dial a lot easier as it has a high amount of resistance. We welcome the heightened level of resistance on the dial as we have often experienced the mode dial changing positions when it was hanging off our shoulders (on several other cameras, not the A77).

The top LCD is quite rich in information (like most top LCDs) and is surrounded by the ISO, exposure bracketing, white balance and drive/timer buttons. There is even a button to toggle between dedicated liveview or viewfinder views, but it’s oddly placed on the rise of the flash, which makes reaching it with the thumb a little difficult. Expect to move the camera away from the eye to reach this function.

Features
The Sony SLT – A77 is infused with a whole load of juicy goodness. The A-77, at the time of announcement, was the first camera to feature a gorgeous 2.4 million dot screen as the viewfinder (electronic viewfinder). One might be inclined to think that Sony’s just throwing fancy features at the users without the actual need, but the EVF serves a crucial piece of tech in the larger scheme of things.

The A77 features an insane burst speed of 12 frames per second, all achieved thanks to the semi translucent mirror that replaces the typical mirror box in a DSLR. Typically, when you shoot, the mirror needs to be pulled up so the light from the lens can hit the sensor to form the image. Burst modes in conventional DSLRs are slower because there is a delay that gets factored in. Camera makers have spent obscene amounts of money in fine tuning the mirror box mechanism to achieve higher frames per second. Sony simply introduced the translucent mirror, effectively boosting the burst speed.

The one drawback of the translucent mirror is that it dims the light in the viewfinder significantly. That’s where the EVF comes in. It removes the dimly lit viewfinder and replaces it with a digital image being rendered through the A77’s liveview engine. The EVF isn’t without its fair share of issues though. Since the image is being digitally rendered, we noticed that any time we shot in relatively low light (around sunset and after), the image in the EVF became extremely noisy. Of course that noise is only due to the liveview engine boosting the display, but it makes reading the digital display a little difficult, especially in low light.

The A77 also uses a fully phase-detection based focusing system, which works better for this sort of a system. The phase detection chip sits on top of the translucent mirror, which feeds it light data constantly. Phase detections works better than classical contrast detection AF as it only needs one reading of the scene to determine where to focus, whereas contrast detection AF requires multiple readings, and hence, moved the lens through the entire focus range.

Another very handy feature Sony has thrown into the A77 is a three-way-swivel-tilt screen. The screen is a 921K dot screen employing Sony’s TruBlack technology which does indeed render images quite well. The screen’s versatility cannot be bound by the words we write to describe its effectiveness. Film-makers will especially appreciate the ways in which they can twist and turn the screen, in order to get angles which were previously a hassle not worth tackling.

Focussing System
The A77 uses a full Phase Detection based AF that does a great job thanks to the constant light stream provided by the translucent mirror. This not only helps with faster focussing, but even shows better tracking results when compared to similar cameras using contrast detect AF. If you’re a proud owner (or owner to be) of the A77, you will get 19 AF-points to play around with, 11 of which are cross type. Cross type AF points are sensitive in both horizontal and vertical orientations, and thus offer better focus locking and tracking that non cross-type AF points.

The AF system can be set in four configurations; Manual (MF), Single Shot (S), Continuous (C) and Automatic (A), all accessible through a dial on the bottom right (if you’re facing the lens mount) . The dial is a nice touch, as its one thing you won’t need to fumble with buttons for. As far as the AF performance of the A77 is concerned, we had no trouble whatsoever, in locking focus, in part, thanks to the built AF-illuminator lamp. We did feel the focus was a bit slow to lock on, but that was mostly a feature of the slow AF motor on the lens (the Sony 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6). Another problem we faced with the focus system was that when using the nav-stick at the back to switch focus points (while looking through the viewfinder), it took nearly half a second for the focus point to switch from the old one to the one adjacent to it. This sluggishness, in our opinion, really cripples the otherwise blazing fast AF system. Hopefully, a firmware update might fix the issue.

Visit page two, to read about the Sony Alpha 77's Image Quality, Video Performance, and Verdict...

Image Quality
There’s a lot at stake when you decide to pack in an obscene amount of pixels into an area as small as an APS-C sensor. The realm of 24 megapixels was something even the full frames stayed away from (at least at the time of announcement). Packing in this many pixels has always been a taboo due to fears of noise quality degrading too quickly. We figured it would be best to see if such effects existed for ourselves.

In our outdoors test, the Sony did well with respect to getting the exposures right. None of our shots felt like there was an exposure bias (towards shadows OR highlights), which left us a little surprised (pleasantly albeit) as we’ve never had a DSLR balance out exposures so well before. We also noticed that the 24 megapixel sensor resolves not just detail, but even dynamic range rather well.

We expected the performance of the camera to be good when shooting in good lighting conditions at nominal ISOs, so we decided to see what the images would look like at higher ISOs. We bumped up the ISO to 3200 and our consequent shots revealed something interesting. While the sensor was not generating any color noise, there was definitely a significant amount of grain. Now this grain wasn’t visible in preview mode, but when we looked at the photos at a 100%, it was surely there.

Even our studio shots confirmed the presence of noise at ISO 3200. In shooting our standard test target, we found that the shadow areas were quick to develop chrominance and luminance noise. While ISO 3200 just showed signs of noise, which can easily be rectified using any noise reduction tool, higher ISOs were not so forgiving. Interestingly, ISO 6400 exhibited a slight color shift, with the image becoming quite warm on the top half of the frame. The same behavior was prevalent at ISO 12800 and ISO 16000 as well, only, in these cases, the color shift was applied to the entire image and the noise had reduced the images to grainy mess. We’d recommend caution when pushing the ISO levels over 3200, especially in low light. However, shots up to ISO 5000 can be salvaged using noise reduction, without any significant loss in detail.

The flash on the A77 is surprisingly better than most on-camera flashes we’ve come across. It has a guide number of 12 (at ISO 100), meaning the flash will have an effective range of about 8 feet (at aperture f/1.4). The range might not seem that impressive, but what is nice about the on board flash is that its illumination is quite even, and the presence of harsh shadows is almost negligible. Unfortunately, all is not peachy in the flash department. While using the stock 16-105mm lens (without a lens hood), we found that the combination cast a lens shadow when zoomed out all the way to 16mm. While the problem doesn’t really exist beyond 85mm, we still feel that the flash could have been designed to not cast such a shadow. With cameras like the Nikon D7000 or the Canon 60D, we didn’t face such problems.

Video
The A77 offer the ability to record full HD footage in either AVCHD format (1920x1080 at 60p,60i and 24p) or MP4 (1440x1080 at 30fps). There is a stereo mic built into the hinge of the flash which records audio pretty well, but unfortunately has a tendency to pick up on wind noise rather easily. The dedicated video button is great to quickly switch into video recording mode.

As good as the video quality is, unfortunately, making the most of the A77’s video system is a little tricky. There is no way to have full manual control over the shutterspeed and aperture while maintaining AF. Activating video recording in any of the PASM modes locks the camera in Program mode, meaning, you get full time autofocus, but no control over the exposures. In order to shoot manually, we had to switch to the dedicated video marker on the mode dial. We can’t figure out why Sony would not allow full time AF to be functional while using manual settings for video. So if you’re going to picking up the A77, know that there is a trade-off between AF and manual exposure for video.

What Else is There
The Alpha 77 is treading on the a territory which has been long been jointly dominated by the Canon 7D and Nikon D7000. The 7D from canon boasts a very impressive focus system with pro-grade tracking capabilities and has been the staple go-to camera for amateur film-makers on a budget. The Nikon D7000 has rivaled the 7D with better overall image quality (with its higher dynamic range and better color depth) and its much lower price point. However, the D7000 cannot match the 7D’s 8 frames per second burst mode.

The three 7’s (Canon 7D, Nikon D7000 and Sony SLT – A77) all share mighty impressive features. If you’re a megapixel nut, then the A77 is the obvious choice hands down. However, if you’re looking for a solid video performer, the 7D might be a better choice, despite the higher price point. The Nikon D7000 does best the other two in overall image quality though. Last but not the least, the A77 is the cheapest of the three (for body only) pricing in at INR 69,999, followed by the Nikon D7000 (INR 79,950) and with Canon 7D being the most expensive of all at INR 87,995. The Alpha does pack more bang for the buck when it comes to features, but the Canon 7D does offer a more solid performance.

Verdict
The Sony SLT – A77 is a monster of a DSLR no doubt. There some impressive firsts and equally astounding innovations packed in here, that seem to work beautifully together. It seems like Sony hasn’t held back one bit in infusing this semi-professional APS-C DSLR with pro grade features, all while keeping the price tag at a modest level.

The A77 is definitely a solid performer for the class it’s pitted into. A high resolution sensor that renders great detail, a mirror-shutter assembly that allows blazing fast burst speeds and a novel focusing system that works faster than the conventional Contrast Detection system makes the A77 a very well rounded semi-pro DSLR. We love the rugged build, the weather sealing and the nice dials. We love the ergonomics. What we didn't like was the mediocre noise performance, especially after seeing how the Nikon D3200 managed to keep noise at bay all the way to ISO 6400 while the Alpha was struggling at ISO 3200 (read our review). The lack of continuous AF while shooting video in Manual mode is quite disappointing, seeing as how Sony is trying to lure in amateur film-makers with the high quality video and the swivel-tilt-turn screen.

For a price of INR 69,990 (for body only), the A77 is definitely a good buy if you’re looking for something sturdy, with a good overall balance of features and performance. While the A77 is a slight disappointment in the noise handling department, it definitely makes up for it with the fast AF (especially if coupled up with one of Sony lenses that feature Super Sonic Wave Motors) and stellar video quality. We’d recommend buying the body only and saving the extra 30K (A77 16-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit is for INR 99,999) and investing it in a nice lens, like a 50mm f/1.4 prime instead of a kit lens that suffers from poor optical quality.

Kangana Ranaut Hits Back at Jaya Bachchan's Parliament Speech: Which 'Thali' has Industry Given?

Kangana Ranaut has criticised Jaya Bachchan's 'jis thali mein khate hain usmein chhed karte hain' analogy at the Parliament, saying she has made her own space in the industry.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:42 PM IST

Kangana Ranaut has hit back at Jaya Bachchan's speech in the Parliament against people pointing fingers at the industry ovedr various issues. The actress-politician said in the in Rajya Sabha, "People in the entertainment industry are being flogged by social media. People who made their names in the industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree. I hope that govt tells such people not to use this kind of language."

She slammed people who criticise the same industry which have made their careers, using the 'jis thali mein khate hain usmein chhed karte hain' analogy. "Some of the people who have got name and fame has said it is 'gutter'," she said, without naming the individuals but added they should not defame the industry. "It is the film industry that gave name and fame to many people," she said. There is a continuous process to defame the industry for the things done by a handful," she added.

Kangana tweeted in response to Jaya's statement and wrote in Hindi, "Which thali has Jaya ji and her industry given? We got one thali which had a two-minute role, item numbers and one romantic scene, that too after sleeping with the hero. I have taught feminism to this industry, decorated the thali with women-centric and patriotic films. This is my own thali, not yours Jaya ji."

Jaya Bachchan, in her defence of the industry, had also said that it employs many people in different areas and some are highest individual tax payers. The veteran actress, who is married to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, was also upset over comments on social media and the media.

Oracle 'Very Close' To Deal On Tiktok: Donald Trump

US officials had confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance

Washington, United States:

Silicon Valley tech giant Oracle is "very close" to sealing a deal to become the US partner to Chinese-owned video app TikTok to avert a ban in the United States, President Donald Trump said Tuesday.

Trump's comments came a day after US officials confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance ahead of a deadline set by the US president, who has called the app a national security threat.

"I heard they're very close to a deal," Trump told reporters, adding that "we're going to make a decision pretty soon" on whether to approve the tie-up, which would make Oracle a "trusted technology provider" for TikTok.

Details of the deal remained unclear. But the Financial Times reported that ByteDance was to place TikTok's global business in a new US-headquartered company with Oracle investing as a minority shareholder along with other US investors.

CNBC reported the Trump administration could approve the deal as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

If the transaction happens, it would avoid an outright sale of TikTok while giving a stake in the popular app to Oracle, whose founder Larry Ellison is a prominent Trump supporter.

Trump told reporters Tuesday he had "high respect for Larry Ellison."

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents had also tested positive for covid and were treated in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Last week, I took a COVID test after having a light fever. Its report was negative. I was tested again as I was feeling unwell. The report has now come as positive," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Adesh Gupta said he was in quarantine during the last week and advised those who had come in contact with him to get themselves tested.

Delhi BJP media cell head Ashok Goel said Adesh Gupta was found positive in his third COVID-19 test. The previous two tests, including an RT-PCR, came out as negative, he said.

"The Delhi BJP president underwent a rapid antigen test last week and later, an RT-PCR test, both of which showed him to be COVID negative.  He had body ache but no fever. He was again tested using the RT-PCR method, the report of which came on Wednesday as COVID-19 positive," he said.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents, who live in his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh, had also tested positive for COVID-19 and were treated in Delhi 15-20 days ago.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP office on Pant Marg was closed for sanitisation on Wednesday, a day after 17 people there tested positive for COVID-19.

These include staff members and their families who live on the party office premises.

On Monday, a peon of the Delhi BJP office tested positive for COVID-19, after which all the staff and their family members, numbering around 40, were tested.

Two BJP MPs from Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi and Parvesh Verma, were found COVID-19 positive ahead of the Parliament session that started earlier this week.

Verdict

The ASUS ROG GX501 Zephyrus bridges the gap between performance and portability. At Digit, we simply can’t count the number of times that we’ve been asked for recommendations that could not only provide great portability but also not compromise on performance. Often, the answer was an either-or but never could you have an option with both. The ROG GX501 gives you great portability thanks to its 18 mm thickness and low weight of 2.25 kg. However, it’s still a 15.6-inch laptop which will dissuade some buyers. On the performance front, the Max-Q enabled GTX 1080 can easily handle every single AAA game running at Ultra settings. The downside is that the battery doesn’t last long and that was never a concern while gaming. However, even with normal everyday tasks, we’re gettings 2-2.5 hours at max. There is a solution for that, the CPU and GPU are extremely over-powered for normal day-to-day tasks. So we used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to ramp down the CPU while we were not gaming. A similar thing can be done to the GPU using MSI Afterburner. We easily managed to get more than 3 hours with these enhancements, however, had we played around with the power profiles a little longer, we could have come out with a better profile. Overall, the ASUS ROG GX501 Zephyrus with its unique proposition offers what no other laptop does in the Indian market right now – a slim and powerful machine. The ball now lies in the competition’s court to see when the other Max-Q laptops make it to India.

ASUS GX501 Zephyrus Gaming Laptop detailed review

ASUS’s GX501 or Zephyrus has been enjoying quite a bit of attention thanks to it being the first gaming laptop to feature NVIDIA’s Max-Q technology. NVIDIA’s Max-Q is a set of technologies pertaining to physical design, electrical design and thermal design. Currently, the GTX 1060, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 GPUs have Max-Q variants and the Zephyrus is part of the first wave of laptops to feature them. Others include the Acer Predator Triton 700, GIGABYTE Aorus X5 MD, MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002, GS73VR Stealth Pro-033 and the Clevo P950HR. Except the Zephyrus, we couldn’t find listings for the other models in India. At the Computex 2017 ASUS press event, it was revealed that NVIDIA and ASUS have a joint design facility from where the Zephyrus was born, which makes it the first ever gaming laptop with Max-Q.

Naturally, we were a bit curious to have a look at how a Max-Q laptop is designed. So we took the unit apart to take a peak inside and discovered an entirely different approach to cooling. Before we get into that, let’s have a look at the specs.

ASUS GX501 Zephyrus Specifications

The ASUS GX501 Zephyrus is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ and an NVIDIA GTX 1080 (Max-Q). So we’re expecting quite a lot from the unit, what stands to be seen is where the laptop throttles, if at all it does, and how much do we end up losing out on performance, if at all throttling should happen.

Despite the thinness of the laptop, ASUS has managed to squeeze in a 50 Whr battery which is commendable feat, however, with a GTX 1080 that’s set to be drained quickly. The other noteworthy addition is that of a 230 W power adapter. We’ve seen some units from the competition carry lower wattage adapters since the GPU is designed to work for a lower power envelope, with the Zephyrus, it seems we’ll not have that issue.

Chassis Build

he Zephyrus has a very minimalist approach. The top half of the clam has a brushed metal finish with a sharp line where it appears as if two halves meet just like the confluence of two streams.

Asus Zephyrus

There’s hardly any elevation in the centre of the laptop. It’s very thing coming in at 17.9 mm.

Asus Zephyrus

The underside is very different from all the laptops we’ve seen for a really long time. Why? The absence of vents, that‘s why. There are two lean vents on either side but they seem ridiculously ill-prepared to handle an NVIDIA GTX 1080.

Asus Zephyrus

It’s only when you open the lid, that you see vents magically appear out of nowhere.

Asus Zephyrus

This is because the entire flat panel under the laptop acts as a hatch. Opening the lid extends two levers which adds separation between the hatch and the bottom of the laptop as we can see in the lower portion of the above image. Upon removing the bottom hatch, we see a completely sealed off underside. All that’s exposed are two cooling fans which intake from the bottom. And then there’s the hinge that extends outwards to elevate the Zephyrus. Let’s take a closer look at the hinge.

Asus Zephyrus

It appears to be fairly sturdy and the thickness of the metal plates that form the hinge mirror what we’ve seen in other laptops. The small part that’s jutting out goes into the plastic guide that’s shown below.

The only concern here is that over time, this guide is going to erode a bit. So having metal inserts in the groove or making the entire thing out of machined metal would have been a better approach.
Not being satisfied with a huge plain plastic sheet, we then proceeded to further dissect the laptop only to come across quite a bit of FRCs. Thanks to the thin construction, ASUS has managed to make good use of the limited space they set out to work with. Which is why, once opened up, we ended up with this.

Asus Zephyrus

The display panel is on the left and the hatch is on the right. Upon closer inspection, we see that hatch is mostly comprised of a keyboard and vents for hot air to slip out. Since most of the heat is being vented from the rear, there’s barely anything coming out through the top hatch. Adding dust filters to the vents on the hatch is a good move.

Asus Zephyrus

Here’s how the motherboard appears from the top. We can see that the cooler takes up the most real estate with the battery coming in at a close second. There’s one slot for RAM on this side of the motherboard which is populated by a SAMSUNG 16 GB DDR4 DIMM rated at 2400 MHz.

Asus Zephyrus

Because of the space taken up by the cooler and the battery, we see why ASUS couldn’t squeeze in a memory card reader. The cooling assembly has multiple heatpipes routed right over the CPU, GPU, VRM and the Memory chips for the CPU. Nothing’s exposed aside from the PCH.

Asus Zephyrus

The audio on the GX501 Zephyrus is very standard, and these aren’t down-firing speakers which is the common arrangement seen in most laptops today. Such an arrangement ends up being louders which is a nice thing, however, you are also susceptible to dust collection. Since these pores are really minute, you won’t have as much dust getting accumulated as compared to an arrangement with really big vents.

Asus Zephyrus

The topside, has a classy ROG logo with activity LEDs placed right near the edge. The LEDs aren’t distracting when using the laptops in a dark environment.

Asus Zephyrus

The build of the GX501 Zephyrus is really unique. We can see why NVIDIA chose ASUS as  the first partner to come out with the MAX-Q laptops. This was revealed by NVIDIA CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang at the COMPUTEX 2017 press conference. Cramming in all the features expected from a high-end gaming laptops without all the accompanying bulk really sets MAX-Q laptops apart. Moreover, they sport a hefty price tag too. However, with the new Intel Kabylake-G CPUs, we see this trend to become common and affordable soon.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Bringing the keyboard lower on the body isn’t a new concept, however, it certainly is necessary in this case as the GTX 1080 should start heating up under load. And since the laptop is particularly thin, the touch temperature would be high. However, with this design the user will not face any discomfort. As seen from the chassis design, the keyboard rests atop the battery so there’s no worry of higher touch temperature at all.

The absence of a numpad can be really irksome for those who’re used to a gaming on the desktop. Especially, if you’re into MMOs wherein a lot of macros are needed. Having the touchpad turn into a numpad makes up for that by a margin. In this case, you still need to glance at the pad since you might end up accidentally pressing the wrong macro as there are no physical marks to distinguish between the different keys. You never want to be “that support guy” who accidentally casts a charm right in the midst of a boss battle instead of a heal. That kind of accidents will get you booted from the raid and possibly from the guild as well.

Asus Zephyrus

Lastly, it’s nice to see that the ‘Home’ and ‘End’ keys being incorporated in the last two buttons atop the touchpad. Being one of the most used keys on the keyboard for us, it’s an appreciated configuration.

I/O ports

The thing with thin laptops is that you have to resort to thinner ports. If not, then the bezel around the ports end up becoming too thin and tend to bend. Which is why you see USB Type-C ports on thin gaming laptops and convertibles. Since the ASUS ROG GX501 is thicker than most convertibles, they’ve added USB Type-A ports on both sides. All of them being USB 3.1 except the Type-C port which is 3.2. There’s an HDMI port included. The only obvious ports that aren’t present are the Ethernet port and a card reader.

Asus Zephyrus

We do get USB Type-C to Ethernet adapters in case you need them. However, an Ethernet port is 13.5 mm tall so once we take out the thickness of the display from the overall thickness of 18 mm and allow for clearance as well, it becomes completely unfeasible to have an Ethernet port. Gaming is generally preferred over wired connections for the better ping, we didn’t find a major difference in the ping while playing over Wi-Fi. It should be noted that we played PLAYERUNKOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS over Wi-Fi and our ping is generally around the 15 ms mark over wired connection. With Wi-Fi, we saw it hover around 18-19 ms which is still very good.

If you look at the GX501 from an internal perspective then the bottom half is devoted for the battery and the top half is devoted for the cooling assembly as shown in the image above.  Towards the sides, they’ve managed to squeeze in a portion of the motherboard onto which the ports and the PCIe SSD are mounted. A card reader slot takes up quite a bit of space both vertically and horizontally. If one had been included, then we’re looking at losing out on two existing ports. That’s a trade off we’d rather not make. So, we can see that the card reader wasn’t included for a very good reason.

Display

The ASUS ROG GX501 features a 24-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1920x1080. Sure, the GTX 1080 will easily handle 4K gaming but we believe that the 1080p panel was chosen to ensure the GPU didn’t get overworked. If you were to switch on Dynamic Super Resolution, then you’ll get a the same compute overhead as a 4K panel. And the GPU should heat up to an unnecessary level.

Asus Zephyrus

Asus Zephyrus

The webcam is HD ready which seems to be the norm these days. Image clarity wasn’t out of this world but it’s enough for most use cases. Should you need better quality it’s always advisable to go with a Logitech C920 or better.
Since the Zephyrus makes use of the fancy hatch system, the rear of the laptop gets a little elevated upon being completely open. At this point, the display is at an angle of 120 degrees from the base. Compared to some of the previously tested units, this seems a bit low if you were to keep the Zephyrus on your lap. Anything over 140 degrees is where things start getting more comfortable. And as mentioned earlier, your lap isn’t the right place for this laptop.

The panel is quite well sealed off, there’s hardly any bleed which is consistent with most laptops in this price bracket.

Performance

We’re looking at a very common configuration with the ASUS GX501 Zephyrus. The Intel Core i7 7700HQ coupled with 24 GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 2400 MHz ensure a pretty high headroom for most mundane tasks. The GTX 1080 MAX-Q just takes it  to a different level. Almost every AAA title gets more than 60 FPS and you can even switch on NVIDIA DSR for some of the titles for some extra smoothing.

We started off with CineBench and R15 and the GX501 Zephyrus scored 160 in 1T and 735 in nT benchmarks. These scores seem to be on par with the other Intel 7700HQ laptops we've tested. WinRAR’s compression benchmark scored 7843 KB/s which is very similar to the MSI GE62 7RE and the Acer Nitro AN515-51 that we’ve tested earlier. As for PCMark8, we used Accelerated to leverage the GPU and ended up with a score of 5288 on PCMark8 Work (Acc.) and 5049 in PCMark8 Home (Acc.). We had a few crashes on our 3DMark FireStrike Extreme runs while all other 3DMark benchmarks ran without any issues.

Storage

The Samsung SM961 is one of the top SSDs you can get in the OEM market. This NVMe SSD can give you about 3,500 MBps in QD32 transfers for large file sizes while for 4K writes you'll end up with about 145 MBps. These are pretty high numbers, after all, Samsung has been leading the SSD race for quite some time now. Honestly, there's no need for RAID 0 in this laptop with such high transfer rates.

Asus Zephyrus

Moreover, this is not a lot capacity unit, it's a 1 TB NVMe SSD. That alone costs upwards of Rs.45,000, so you can understand why this laptop costs about Rs.3 lakhs.

Wi-Fi

For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the ASUS GX501 Zephyrus uses an Intel 8265 which is a dual-band 802.11ac module. It uses a 2T2R configuration to obtain a peak transfer rate of 867 Mbps. We used iPerf to see how well the add-on card fared over the ‘ac’ band. We managed to get 492 Mbps on the throughput and about 92 Mbps via a single stream which is quite good for streaming HD content. In fact, you can stream multiple 4K videos just for the heck of it. For gaming, we always prefer to be wired. Or at least, you need to maintain a clear LOS with the Wi-Fi adapter to keep latency at the minimum.

Gaming

The GTX 1080 MAX-Q is an optimised version of the normal GTX 1080. While gaming on the Zephyrus, we ended up with 110 FPS in Battlefield 1 while on Ultra settings. Similarly, DOOM scored 130 FPS, The Witcher 3 scored 61 FPS and PUBG hit about 78 FPS. We then moved onto 3DMark in which we managed to obtain 18222 in Fire Strike and 31021 in Sky Diver.

In TimeSpy, we scored 5661 which is pretty decent too. Overall, we'd say that the MAX-Q variant of the GTX 1080 is more comparable with the normal GTX 1070 which isn't all that bad when you consider the fact that all that power is clubbed into such a thin form factor.

Pricing

At the end of the day, you are looking at a laptop powered by a GTX 1080 MAX-Q and Intel Core i7-7700HQ laptop. It doesn't match up to the normal GTX 1080, but the normal GTX 1080 would never fit in your back-pack as easy as the Zephyrus does. We've seen how ASUS has picked a really great display and has left no stone unturned to give you your money's worth. The SSD was one such example. It costs roughly 15% of the overall laptop and is one of the best SSDs you can buy. The keypad configuration keeps your hands away from the heat sources giving you the comfort to game endlessly. Also, this is the first every MAX-Q laptop, so ASUS is hoping to learn from user feedback as to what needs to be done in the future. As of now, the GX501 and the Acer Triton 700 are the only MAX-Q laptops available in India which are this thin. Alienware has a MAX-Q variant as well, though the chassis is way thicker. For being in such a unique position, both ASUS and Acer command a hefty price premium for their MAX-Q laptops. Once more variants enter the market, you should see better pricing.

Ivanka Trump dubs father Donald 'most authentic president' and rival Joe Biden 'vessel'

The White House advisor called Biden "a vessel for whatever the fringe of the party or the mainstream media want him to be."

Ivanka Trump, senior White House advisor and first daughter of the United States, has been actively participating in the presidential campaign for her father, Donald Trump.

During her latest visit to North Carolina on Monday, Ivanka Trump chatted with prospective voters and outlined their choices in the upcoming presidential election in November. While visiting a bakery in Wilmington, the president's daughter said the state's motto, "To be, rather than to seem," also reflected the choice between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden. The mother-of-three was attending a "fireside chat" which was moderated by Trump 2020 National Press Secretary Hogan Gidley, reports Daily Mail.

"On one hand you have a person who is a vessel for whatever the fringe of the party or the mainstream media want him to be, but on the other hand you have someone who is arguably the most authentic president we've ever had," the 38-year-old said.

Her recent visit to North Carolina, which is crucial in her father's re-election campaign, was her fifth visit to the state in three-and-half years. The POTUS himself has made several visits to the swing state in the past couple of weeks. North Carolina with 15 electoral votes is the most volatile of the swing states and is considered a must-win for Trump this time around as well.

Meanwhile, Trump's ex-wife Ivana Trump praised the work being done by Ivanka and said her daughter could "definitely" be the country's first female president. "She's in the White House every day. She's next to her father every day," the 71-year-old said in an interview on the British talk show "Loose Women."

"She knows all what is going around. I think she could be one day the first girl, or woman, president. Definitely," the former model added.

The businesswoman, who was married to Trump from 1977 to 1991, further exclaimed: "She's smart as hell. She's beautiful. She's au courant. And how much more can you have?"

President Trump himself had floated his eldest daughter's name as a future presidential pick during a campaign rally in New Hampshire last month. After criticising Biden's pick of Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, the 74-year-old had said: "They're all saying 'we want Ivanka.' I don't blame them."

Verdict

The Canon EOS 750D is a neatly crafted DSLR in the entry segment that's made for the budding photographer buying his/her very first DSLR. While the dynamic range in photographs is compromised, its brilliant viewfinder, ease of usage, and overall competence make up for the 750D’s limitation. On the spec sheet, the Nikon D5500 offers a higher dynamic range, which would make it a better choice for amateur/semi-professional photographers with identical specifications and features. But at a few thousands less, the Canon EOS 750D is an excellent buy in the entry DSLR segment now.

Canon EOS 750D detailed review

The Canon EOS 750D, coming almost two years after the EOS 700D, is a notable upgrade over its predecessor’s offering. We got the standard kit, combined with an EOS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Out of the box, the EOS 750D looks like a neat, compact DSLR - pretty much the way Canon’s other entry-level DSLR offerings look like. It has a polycarbonate body, which feels quite well-built and sturdy. Edges and curves have been constantly refined since Canon’s 550D, but with the 750D, Canon decided to make more upright with rounded corners, against its predecessor 700D’s rounded sides.

We took the EOS 750D out for a few spins across the city, and this is how it fared.

Body and Design
The Canon EOS 750D is noticeably less concentrated on giving the impression of a DSLR trying to look attractive, which the 700D somewhat tried with its low-flung, rounded sides. As with most budget DSLRs, the 750D has a polycarbonate body instead of magnesium alloy found on more expensive cameras. This cost-effective framework makes entry-segment DSLRs lighter than the professional ones, which help amateur photographers to get accustomed to their new camera. The 750D body has a sturdy build, without compromising on making the DSLR feel strong. At a body-only weight of 525 grams, the 750D is 15 grams lighter than the 700D, but 140g heavier than the similarly priced Canon EOS 100D. Nikon’s offerings at a similar price range are the D5300 and D5500, which weigh 480g and 420g respectively.

Canon has managed to fit in the controls and buttons in a simple, easy arrangement. The mode wheel has a number of higher features amiss, although it provides ample auto-modes for beginners. The control wheel is well placed, easy to reach. Waterproofing is amiss, although you would be hard pushed to find waterproofing in this price range. Of notable DSLRs, only the recently-launched Pentax K-S2 has waterproofing in this price range. The EOS 750D is all about ease of usage. Its controls are neatly arranged in an easy-to-understand format, coupled with Canon’s simple interface that aids beginners and professionals alike. It does not get a second LED display for controls, which is usually found in higher end cameras. The EOS 760D, this one’s older brother, gets more controls along with the LED display control panel, so if you are looking at a 70k-ish price bracket and are adept at handling DSLRs, you would rather consider it over the 750D.

While the EOS 750D has the standard EF lens mount on it, the camera does not give us the confidence of being sturdy enough to mount bigger, heavier lenses like the EF 300mm telephoto, or the 100-400mm telephoto zoom. But that is pretty much the case with most DSLRs in this budget and it doesn’t really pose a threat to the excellent usability of the EOS 750D. Overall, an excellent proposition.

Screen and Viewfinder
The Canon EOS 750D has the same display panel as the EOS 700D, a Clear View II LCD with a 3:2 aspect ratio and touchscreen operation support. The display swivels by 270 degrees, which makes shooting at awkward angles much easier. The display is bright, and has a number of electronic controls inside the Menu to tweak it to full brightness, to retain sunlight visibility. Touch response is smooth, allowing focus tracking with fingers, one-touch photo capture and easy swipe-viewing of images, very good features for a beginner.

Like its major competitor, the Nikon D5500, the Canon EOS 750D has a pentaprism viewfinder covering 95% of the photograph area. This means that while clicking photographs, an additional five percent information is incumbent on the sensor, but not possible to view. Yet again, the Pentax K-S2 scores with a 100-percent-covering viewfinder. The EOS 750D is no mean feat, though, featuring an excellent display reproducing accurate colours, and a responsive touchscreen.

Performance
Focusing
This is an area where the Canon EOS 750D has majorly improved over the 700D’s 9-point autofocus system. While it is not as swiftly accurate as the Nikon D5500’s 39-point autofocus system, it does beat the Pentax K-S2, which features an 11-point autofocus system. The 19-point phase-detection autofocus mechanism is definitely a step down from contrast detection autofocus, but with the smaller sensor and Canon’s Digic 6 image processor powering the 750D, the phase-detection mechanism keeps the camera fast, and autofocus is zippy. The seven-column autofocus points on the viewfinder track subjects for fast focusing, and is consistent and accurate. In Live View mode, focusing and focus tracking are both fast and accurate - there is no jerk in focus shifts, and the servo works very smoothly and silently, so that noise from the image stabiliser of the lens does not interfere with video recording.

Burst Shooting and Connectivity
One excellent aspect about the Canon EOS 750D is that it does not suffer when used extensively. Shooting bursts is at 5 frames per second. For RAW files, burst photography is limited to eight files, while it extends up to an impressive 940 files in the JPEG format. In terms of connectivity, there are options to sync the camera with an app on your phone, via wifi and NFC. Alongside image transfer and shutter control remotely, there are also options for adjusting other settings on the camera too.

Imaging and Videography
The 24.2-megapixel sensor is quite a major improvement over the 18-megapixel sensor of the Canon EOS 700D. Focusing, however, remains slightly on the softer side owing to the anti-aliasing (AA) filter. While the AA filter does reduce noise in images, focusing requires a considerable amount of effort to hit accuracy while being operated manually.

Shutter speed has the standard range: 30 seconds (bulb) to 1/4000”. Sensitivity varies from ISO 100-12800, with option for notching it up to 25600, although it becomes extremely noisy in these ISO levels. The EOS 750D has a dynamic range of 11 stops, and the low dynamic range is visible in photos against lit backgrounds. There is a multi-exposure HDR mode that slightly improves the range of contrasts, although you would need a camera stand to shoot in this mode. While this does hinder the overall quality in some exceptional cases, it is not a major flaw that takes the shine away from the EOS 750D.

The video quality, as seen in previous Canon DSLRs, is quite good with ample lighting conditions. The 750D does not disappoint, either, and it remains a good contender for independent, amateur to semi-professional filmmakers who have taken to Canon’s video production quality a lot. The highest video recording capability here is at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps, the same as previous. Additionally, to aid serious videography, Canon has included support to plug in a unidirectional condenser boom microphone with a 3.5mm audio jack, and also options to control the volume of audio recording.

Here are a few test shots taken with the Canon EOS 750D, in varying conditions:

Canon EOS 750D image gallery

Bottomline
While we are yet to test the Nikon D5500 and the Pentax K-S2, the Canon EOS 750D is a brilliant DSLR even without comparing it to others. The cheaper price point does not compromise on build quality, regular photograph quality is excellent and video resolution is competent. Adding to these is the excellent autofocus architecture of this camera that, which makes it an absolute learners delight. More often, the autofocus motor was faster than focusing manually, simply because of the soft focus nature that the AA filter imparts to the camera.

However, certain factors need to be taken into account. At a similar price point, both the Nikon D5500 and the Pentax K-S2 offers higher dynamic range. Additionally, the Nikon D5500 comes with a wider, faster 39-point AF system, while the Pentax K-S2 comes with complete waterproofing in a comparatively smaller body. The Nikon is also lighter than the EOS 750D. Apart from these added benefits that these two cameras offer on the spec sheet, the rest should pretty much be the same.

If you want a more rugged usage which involves a lot of splashing around in watery fields, the Pentax might just be the way to go. For a better silhouette representation alongside good regular photography performance, the Nikon D5500 seems to be a better option. If these little factors do not bother you much, you can totally opt for the Canon EOS 750D. At Rs. 45,500 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens bundled, the Canon EOS 750D is a very recommendable DSLR to buy.

The Mi Box 4K works great for SDR content, and even 4K content. Its HDR performance for Netflix is good but falls short with its HDR performance in Prime Videos. It has a USB port making it convenient to use with external storage devices. The Android UI is smooth and the data saver feature is great. It also has a compact and easy to use remote control. Mi Box 4K detailed review

Despite the growing popularity of smart TV streaming devices like the Fire TV stick, Chromecast, Apple TV (for the premium buyers), and more are gaining popularity. As much as I like asking the question, the answer is quite simple. It is a cheaper alternative to upgrading your TV. Say you have a TV from 2015 or 2016. It still has a couple of years of life left in the panel. But the Netflix app on that TV has stopped working or the TV wasn’t really smart, to begin with. In such cases, a streaming device is a great accessory to have. We have also seen a lot of budget smart TV users opt for devices like these as their TVs aren’t getting updates or the OTT apps aren't working properly. So if you are one that is looking to upgrade your TV experience to a smart TV experience, then there is a new device to consider - the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K. As the name suggests, the device has support for 4K, it also supports HDR and runs on Android TV giving you access to all the popular apps and a voice-enabled remote control. Is it a worthy contender in the streaming device space? Let's find out!

Mi Box 4K - Specifications

4K support: Yes
HDMI 2.1: No
HDR 10: Yes
Dolby Vision: No
Dolby Atmos: No
Dolby audio+DTS2.0: Yes
Processor: 64-bit 2.0Ghz CPU
RAM: 2GB DDR3
Built-in storage: 8GB eMMC storage
HDMI Configuration: HDMI 2.0b
USB port: Yes, USB 2.0
Audio out: 3.5mm only
Voice-enabled remote control: Yes

Mi Box 4K - What's in the box

In the box, you get the device along with an HDMI cable, power cable and a voice-enabled remote control. You, unfortunately, don't get batteries and Xiaomi tells me that “Battery air shipping is an issue in India. We would have to send it by road otherwise, which will take much more time”. So make sure you have a pair of AAA batteries at hand when you order this device. One thing to note is that the HDMI cable isn't very long. It is quite short and could be a problem for those that have wall mounted their TV. Other than that you get pretty much everything you need in the box.

Mi Box 4K - Build and Design

The first thing that you will notice is how tiny the box is. It will literally fit in the palm of your hand. It is 9.52cm in length, 9.52cm in width and 1.67cm in thickness. It weighs a mere 148 grams, making it the slimmest and sleeker streaming box we have seen. It could be mistaken for a toy, it is so small. The tiny form factor means this can hide in your entertainment setup with ease. It has a matte black finish all around and all the connectivity options are at the back. We have a 3.5mm audio port, along with the HDMI port, the USB port and the power port. It is minimalist and frankly, gets the job done quite well. The Mi Box 4K has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 as well.

Mi Box 4K connectivity options.

Mi Box 4K - Remote Control

Speaking of the remote control, it is quite similar to what we’ve seen with the Mi TV. It is light, ergonomic and easy to use. The only gripe I have with it is that it lacks a mute button which is really handy when I need to answer a call and don't want to pause the “news” on YouTube, but rather, mute it. It has the power button, the Google Assistant button, the circular D-pad with a centre OK button, back, home, menu, volume rocker and Netflix and Prime Video hotkeys. It is as functional as the Fire TV stick remote control if a comparison needs to be drawn.

The Mi Box 4K has a minimalist remote control.

Mi Box 4K - Performance

Ok, so we are going to break down the performance into how the device performs with SDR, HDR, and 4K, content. We will use apps like Netflix, Prime Videos, and YouTube to judge the performance. We will use an LG B9 OLED TV and a Yamaha YAS-209 soundbar as our connected devices. For reference, we will use Netflix, Prime Videos, and YouTube built-in apps available on the TV and also the same apps on the Fire TV Stick 4K to judge if there is any audio/video difference that we can spot in the performance of the Mi Box 4K.

Mi Box 4K display output resolution.

Mi Box 4K - SDR Performance

The SDR performance of the Mi Box 4K is pretty good. Be it movie trailers from YouTube or shows like Young Sheldon on Prime Videos, the Big Bang Theory or even Friend on Netflix. All shows that are in SDR looked bright, vivid and were well enjoyable on the TV. Even an older show like Seinfeld on Prime Video looked great on the Mi Box 4K. For comparison sake, we played some of the content through the TVs native apps and even the Fire TV Stick 4K, and the performance is homogenous for the most part.

Mi Box 4K - 4K Performance

When connected to a 5Ghz Wi-Fi connection, the quality picks up to 4K pretty fast and stays there. However there is a problem with 5Ghz connectivity, but more on that later. For 4K we resorted to a library of 4K content from Netflix and YouTube and honestly, no complaints here.  Changing modes on the TV from standard to Cinema and more did make the colours pop, but that's the case for any streaming device connected to the TV.

If you have a 1080p TV, then all the 4K content is limited to 1080p and that's ok as it looks good on the 1080p TV. For reference, we saw content using the Mi Box 4K on a Sony W950D 1080p TV as well.

Mi Box 4K supports HDR and 5.1 surround sound.

Mi Box 4K - HDR Performance

This is where things get very interesting and the Mi Box starts losing its immense appeal. So before we get into the HDR performance, know this. If you have a 1080p TV or a 4K TV that does not support HDR, you should do fine consuming content using this device. However, once you get into HDR territory, especially on a TV that's capable of displaying good HDR, then the Mi Box isn't a great option. To recap, we are using the LG B9 OLED TV as our device to test HDR.

One thing to note is that when we connect any HDR-capable device, be it a PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, etc. when HDR content starts to play, the TV recognizes that HDR content is playing (be it HDR 10 or Dolby Vision) and switches the TVs picture settings accordingly. This auto-switching of settings should ideally be the case with most TVs. The only time this happened when using the Mi Box was with Netflix. Watching shows like Altered Carbon, Daredevil or even the movie Extraction, the TV automatically released the image source as HDR and switched the settings accordingly. The content in HDR looks great and if you haven't seen the capabilities of the OLED TVs native app or the Fire TV Stick, 4K, you will be impressed. The colour pop, highlights are beautiful and even the dark scenes retain good detail. But like I said, “if you haven't seen the capabilities of the OLED TVs native app or the Fire TV Stick, 4K”. Because the performance of the same content through those devices is superior. However, as I said, the HDR performance on Netflix is good. But on YouTube and Prime Videos, it is bad.

To begin with, on YouTube and Prime Video, the TV did not auto change to the HDR settings. And manually changing them had different effects on both services. Let's start with YouTube. The Black Widow trailer in HDR and Blade Runner 2049 trailer in HDR were our go-to clips as they consist of bright colours, fast-paced action and both trailers look downright gorgeous. When playing both the trailers through the TVs native app or the Fire TV stick 4K,  the settings changed to HDR but on the Mi Box 4K it didn't and we got slightly paler colours without the pop. Switching the settings of the TV to HDR did help but there was a noticeable difference when compared to the output of the Fire TV Stick. Most viewers may not notice the difference but if looked at side by side, the difference is noticeable.

Prime Video was by far the worst experience. Look at the photos of Jack Ryan below. One is on the Fire TV Stick 4K, the other on the Mi Box 4K. Not only does the content on Prime Videos look dark, but it also loses some key details as well. Changing the settings to HDR on the TV didn’t help either. Even in a show like the Grand Tour season 1 Episode 1, that's bright and vivid, the colours look slightly washed out and the sand looks whiter than it should when all the cars are racing in the desert in the opening minutes of the episode. I asked Xiaomi about the poor performance of Prime Videos in HDR on the device, and they said it could be a problem with the app, so here’s hoping it gets fixed soon via an update.

Mi Box 4K - Apps and UI

Coming to the Apps and the UI, it is exactly the same we have seen on so many Android TVs. You have access to the Google Play Store so the library of apps is huge. Customizing the home screen with your favourite apps and services is easy and the navigation is fast and fluid. There are 2 things I absolutely liked about the UI - Volume controls and data saver.

The Mi Box 4K runs on the Android TV UI.

See, I did not enable CEC when I set up the Mi Box and when I got a phone call, I realized the soundbar remote was far away from me. So when I pressed the volume down on the remote the volume was reduced from the box itself. This is great as on devices like the Fire TV stick, the volume controls are CEC enabled. It's a small feature but a useful one. The other one is the data saver which lets you connect to a mobile hotspot, consumes less data and gives you a warning when you are reaching your preset data limit.

Data saver on the Mi Box 4K is great when using mobile hotspot to connect to the internet.

Mi Box 4K - Content From Hard Drive

Since the Mi Box has a USB port you can easily connect a hard drive to it to consume content. I have a 1TB hard drive with files in MP4 format coded in h.264 and h.265 and both ran very well. A lot of these files are family videos in 4K shot from an iPhone and they ran butter smooth. Although it must be noted that the initial loading of the library in apps like VLC took some time. Safe to say, you can play your favourite files from this device.

Google Assistant can be brought up to search for content

Mi Box 4K - Audio Performance

Coming to the Audio, the Mi Box supports 3.5mm in addition to Bluetooth. We connected the device to the TV via HDMI and connected it to the soundbar via ARC and for the most part the audio from all streaming services was crisp, clear with good channel separation. Since the soundbar is a 2.1 setup, the 5.1 was downmixed and handled quite well. no complaints here.

Mi Box 4K - Some Consistent Problems

The 5GHz connection keeps dropping and there are times when it refuses to connect to it. I literally disconnected every other device from the 5GHz band, reset the Mi Box, prayed to the tech gods, but to no avail. It's just a matter of chance. Sometimes it connects and is stable. At other times, it refuses to connect. And this is when devices like the TV, Xbox One X, and Fire TV Stick are all in the same place and connecting to 5GHz without any issue. The problem is that on the 2.4GHz band, content does not pick up to 4K all the time and when it does, it takes a couple of minutes more than it would otherwise.

Mi Box 4K 5GHz bandhwidth problem.

Bottom line

It is hard to recommend the Mi Box 4K as a go-to device if you have an HDR-enabled TV. But for a 1080p TV or SDR content, it works. But the fact is, so does the Fire TV Stick. The Fire TV Stick 1080p is a mere Rs 500 more expensive than the Mi Box 4K whereas the 4K Fire TV Stick is priced at Rs 6000 making it Rs 2500 more expensive than the Mi Box. There is also the fact that the Mi Box has a plug and play solution for content from an external USB device along with the convenience of Android. So here is your buying decision. If you have a 1080p TV, you can consider this device as it works well, albeit with some niggles. It will even get the job done for a 4K SDR TV. But the performance problem with HDR in Prime Video holds it back from becoming a great streaming device.

Toyota to launch new companies for marketing and for creating mobility businesses | Automotive World

Toyota to launch new companies for marketing and for creating mobility businesses

Toyota Motor Corporation, Dentsu Group Inc., and Dentsu Inc., together with Toyota subsidiary Delphys Inc., announced today their intention to launch a new business structure

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), Dentsu Group Inc. (Dentsu Group), and Dentsu Inc. (Dentsu), together with Toyota subsidiary Delphys Inc. (Delphys), announced today their intention to launch a new business structure, effective from January 2021 (scheduled), for innovating marketing and creating mobility businesses.

Due to the rapid proliferation in recent years of blogs, social networking services, and other forms of social media, the main conveyors of information now include not only members of the mass media but also a diverse range of entities such as individuals and companies. In tandem, the methods for information transmission are also diversifying. In response to these changes, Toyota, centered on owned media such as the Toyota Times, has been conveying “Toyota’s true self” directly to its customers and other stakeholders, as it pursues initiatives to innovate communication out of a need to provide the utmost in trustworthy information.

Furthermore, with advances in such areas as CASE (connected, autonomous, shared, electric) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and looking ahead to a society that gives birth to value by using information to link all things and services that support people’s ways of life, Toyota has begun, through such initiatives as Woven City, the challenge of becoming a company that “mass produces” happiness.

Toyota believes that it would be difficult to achieve such kind of business-model innovation on its own. It also believes that it is necessary to have the ability to quickly and accurately grasp customers’ situations and demands, and to reflect such in new businesses. Furthermore, it recognizes the need to have the power to link with many like-minded partners who feel the same, and propose together with them mobility businesses to the world.

First, based on this thinking, Toyota has decided to transform Delphys, which as a fully owned Toyota subsidiary has strengths in automotive marketing and in the domain of retail centered on automotive sales, into an entity that, going beyond the conventional framework of an advertising agency, can pursue: 1) innovation of communication toward brand-building that generates exceptional customer trust, 2) innovation of marketing that anticipates changes of the times, such as the advancement of a digital society, and 3) the challenge of executing business in a mobility society.

Furthermore, because Toyota shares its aspirations with Dentsu, which has a long track record of successful marketing and business creation both in Japan and abroad, it was decided that the two companies would implement this initiative together. Toyota believes that Dentsu, providing its knowledge and know-how related to integrated marketing communications, as well as that related to the digital domain, will drive innovation speedily forward.

Through the new business structure, without being bound by hitherto methodology, and by going beyond the domain of advertising agencies and beyond the domain of an automobile manufacturer, Toyota, together with Delphys and Dentsu, intends to consider what is best for its customers and to aim to provide them such.

Outline of launch of new business structure

In September 2020, Toyota, Dentsu Group, and Delphys concluded an agreement on a capital and business alliance that included a capital increase in Dentsu Group by Delphys through third-party allocation. Based on the agreement, the companies will launch the new business structure.

Going forward, after obtaining approval and such from the competition authorities in the countries concerned, Dentsu Group intends to invest in Delphys, with preparations being made toward the launch of the new business structure in January 2021 (scheduled).

New business structure

Operating company 1

With Delphys’s business as its foundation, operating company 1 will conduct: 1) innovation of communication toward brand-building that generates exceptional customer trust, 2) innovation of marketing that anticipates changes of the times, such as the advancement of a digital society, and 3) the challenge of executing business in a mobility society.

Operating company 2

Operating company 2 will engage in the creation of new mechanisms and businesses, as a research entity in the field of digital communications, through the advancement of digital transformation in the retail domain.

Holding company

The holding company will preside over operating company 1 (transformed from Delphys) and operating company 2 (newly established), and will conduct strategic decision-making related to innovation in the marketing domain.

Minister clarifies on Toyotas signal to stop expansion in India -

Probe Guided By Facts, "Evidence": Police Chief On Ex-IPS Officer's Letter

Probe Guided By Facts, 'Evidence': Police Chief On Ex-IPS Officer's Letter

The force has so far arrested 1,571 people in connection with the Delhi riots, police said (File)

New Delhi:

Delhi Police chief SN Shrivastava Tuesday said the force is serving its oath and the Constitution with conviction and integrity, asserting its investigations in criminal cases are guided by facts and evidence not by reputations and personalities.

Responding to former IPS officer Julio Ribeiro's recent letter in which he had questioned the police's investigation in the Delhi riots, Mr Shrivastava said there are several entities who have their reasons to weave a "web of deception" and push a "false narrative of bias and insensitivity" on the part of the police.

"The Delhi Police is serving the oath and the Constitution with conviction, integrity and sensitivity, without fear of any self-proclaimed 'true patriots' or favour towards any class, creed or community," Mr Shrivastava said in an e-mail reply to Mr Riberio.

The Delhi Police Commissioner said the force has so far arrested 1,571 people in connection with the riots without differentiating on the basis of caste or religion, and they are almost equally distributed among both the communities.

The police investigations in criminal cases are guided by facts and evidence, not by reputations and personalities, he said.

Mr Shrivastava said Ribeiro in his letter has correctly mentioned registration of 751 FIRs into the northeast riots, adding the very fact of registering of such a large number of FIRs signals the Delhi Police's intention of a fair dealing.

"While we do not differentiate a complainant on the basis of caste or religion, it may be mentioned solely for the purpose of clearing any doubt in the minds of people questioning our probe, that more than 410 FIRs were registered on the complaints of minority community," Mr Shrivastava said.

The other community accounted for over 190 FIRs, he said, adding the remaining were registered on the basis of Daily Diary entries.

"It is best that the criminal justice system, with its inherent checks and balances may be allowed to work, lest lending one's name inadvertently imparts a false aura of credibility and authenticity to these concocted and motivated stories," he said.

Also, anybody aggrieved with the investigation can always seek judicial remedies, he said.

The Delhi Police has examined a large majority of persons who either have a role in the northeast Delhi riots or have information that will help arrive at the truth, Mr Shrivastava said, adding the police have questioned persons without regard to their religion and party affiliation.

"It has collected documentary evidence, including scientific evidence, to support its case. The specific details, understandably, cannot be shared at this stage," he said.

"Chargesheets in many cases have been filed while investigation is continuing in many others. The above details have been given to dispel any impression that one may harbour," he said.

Ribeiro, a former Mumbai Police chief, has been among a select group of eminent citizens who have been raising various issues concerning law and justice.

"As a career police officer who has held numerous responsible positions, you (Ribeiro) are aware of the false perceptions that are often created by interested groups," Mr Shrivastava added.

On Monday, Mr Shrivastava had said a charge sheet will be filed by Thursday in connection with a conspiracy case in the northeast Delhi riots as the force is approaching towards the final league of investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwaha had also said the riots were result of a "planned conspiracy" because during the investigation, the police found a common pattern the anti-CAA protesters followed: block the road traffic.

"It was the first indicator that there was a conspiracy due to which it all started," he had said.

The Police chief had also said the some people with "good social media presence" were trying to "take away the sheen from the investigation".

"As we are approaching towards the final end of investigation, Umar Khalid (former JNU student) has also been arrested. So, there is more and more sort of a cry, especially in the social media and also on the TV channels. (They) are trying to take away the sheen from the investigation.

"You know that people whom we are investigating, many (of them) have a very good social media presence," the Commissioner had said.

Viral Video of NRI Puppy's Aarti and Grihapravesh Triggers Debate about Brahmanical Casteism

A viral video of a little puppy being welcomed into a Desi home has triggered a conversation about caste | Image creditL Twitter

The post reminded netizens of Chunchu Nair, the upper-caste cat whose obituary caused a stir last year in December after it went viral on twitter.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:16 PM IST

While puppy videos are usually a whole lof of fun, a particular video of a puppy being welcomed into an NRI family's home while family members performed aarti has led to a debate about casteist practices on social media in India.

In the viral video, a woman can be seen bringing a puppy into a home and dipping its feet in red alta (paint) before imprinting its paw marks on a sheet of paper. The puppy is then held up Simba style by the woman while another performs arti on the little puppy. the little pup is then allowed to wander into the house on its own.

The ritual mimics one that is often seen in Hindu weddings when a new bride is made to step into alta before entering her husband's home for the first time. The scene has been popularised and romanticised through various Indian film and song sequences and is a popular part of Desi wedding culture.

Originally shared on TikTok by Shreyagid, the video has garnered over 4.7 million views in 24 hours.

While the initial reactions to the videos ranged from joy to surprise, the post soon started attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. Twitter user Thaiyaan who is known to be vocal about his anti-caste views took to the comments and called the video an attempt to "whitewash Brahmanical rituals" as something "cute".

The post reminded netizens of Chunchu Nair, the upper-caste cat whose obituary caused a stir last year in December after it went viral on Twitter. The "Nair cat", as the feline went on to be known, belonged to a Kerala family and led to widespread debate about the anthropomorphisation of caste.

The discussion drifted to casteism and colourism, the latter being a product of the former in case of India, was also evident in the adoption of pets.

Indian journalists and influencers also joined the discussion. Journalist Naomi Barton referred to the "ostensibly harmless and cute" practice as a marker of endemic casteism and a reminder of the "edifice on which Brahmanism is built".

Andre Borges and others also shared the video.

There were others, however, who felt that the video did not really reflect casteism as much as how extra families can be sometimes when it comes to their pets. Many also pointed out that Brahmins were not the only ones who practiced the "grihapravesh" ritual.

While the dog in the video has a caste or not is yet to be ascertained, Barton and Borges have since been under fire from bigoted trolls attacking them for their comments with offensive terms like "rice bags".

BRUSSELS: The EU’s chief executive chided European Union governments on Wednesday for an ineffective foreign policy and proposed U.S.-style sanctions on human rights abusers around the world.

Once able to boast of a soft power that helped transform communist neighbours into market economies, the EU increasingly finds itself unable to agree common positions to influence international diplomacy on issues ranging from Venezuela to Mali.

“Why are even simple statements on EU values delayed, watered down or held hostage for other motives?” European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said in her ‘State of the Union’ speech.

“When member states say Europe is too slow, I say to them ‘be courageous and finally move to qualified majority voting’,” she said. More qualified majority voting would allow the EU to act on more issues without the increasingly onerous process of securing unanimity among the EU’s 27 states.

Von der Leyen said her EU executive would come forward with a proposal to freeze assets of those deemed responsible for human rights abuses, similar to the Magnitsky Act of 2012 in the United States.

Sergei Magnitsky was a Russian lawyer arrested in 2008 after alleging that Russian officials were involved in large-scale tax fraud. Magnitsky died in a Moscow prison in 2009 after complaining of mistreatment.

A new sanctions regime would allow the EU to impose sanctions more quickly on specific individuals anywhere in the world, freezing their assets in the bloc and banning them from entry.

Von der Leyen accused Russia of systematically seeking to eliminate pro-democracy opponents at home and around the region. She said it was wrong to think that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between German and Russia would help to improve tense EU-Russia ties.

She also said nothing could justify Turkey’s intimidation of Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean in a dispute over energy resources.

“Turkey is and will always be an important neighbour. But while we are close together on the map, the distance between us appears to be growing,” Von der Leyen told the European Parliament.

Verdict

The Billion Capture+ is a dependable mid-range phone, but can be easily passed over for a popular option as it gives nothing more than what everyone already does. The mid-range segment is hot with cutthroat competition and it all boils down to who offers the best value for money. This is where the Billion Capture+ fails to capture the essence of the “billions” of customers it aims for - A well-rounded, reliable smartphone.

Flipkart Billion Capture Plus 4GB detailed review

The Billion Capture+ comes in at interesting times. Xiaomi just became the most popular phone maker in the country, at par with Samsung, in terms of market share. We witnessed the resurgence of Nokia. Stock Android and dual cameras became more common across price points and there is an ongoing migration towards bezel-less and 18:9 displays.

In a segment where phones win or lose based on compromises made, Flipkart’s Billion Capture+ offers a lot. A full HD display, the year’s most popular mid-range processor and dual cameras. The Capture+, which is the first smartphone to come out of the stables of Flipkart’s private label is key to the company’s ongoing pivot towards making consumer electronics. At its core is Flipkart’s understanding of what the customer wants out of a phone. The Capture+ apparently is made after analysing customer reviews on Flipkart. So ideally, this phone should be the master of all trades, jack of none.

In the face of such cutthroat competition, the Capture+ does tick off all the boxes which is standard across offerings from most phone makers, including Xiaomi, Motorola, Lenovo and more, at a budget price of Rs 12,999. However, while Chinese incumbents like Lenovo and Motorola have mastered the Android experience, tailoring the hardware and the software to sing in harmony, Billion’s Capture+ still has a long way to go.

As I stated earlier, at the budget segment, it all boils down to how less are companies willing to compromise. Does the Billion Capture+ offer everything a customer wants out of a phone within a budget? At what cost?

Design and Build: Reliable but uninspiring

Once you take the Billion Capture+ and cradle it in your palms, you will know how the money was saved. While on paper, the Capture+ offers everything you can ask from a phone at this price, the quality of the offerings isn’t very high. The very first giveaway is the milled aluminium body fitted with a plastic back panel. Flipkart’s advertising doesn’t mention the plastic build. But having said that, the build quality of the phone looks solid. At 176 grams, it is quite hefty which adds to the grip and at 8.5mm, it is by no means, thin. The back is curved around the edges while the corners are rounded, and the phone rests sturdily in your palms. The fingerprint sensor is also mounted on the upper central column of the back where the finger can easily reach. The volume rockers and power button are located where they usually are and for a right-handed user, all the buttons can be easily accessed by the thumb without having to move the phone up or down.

All this proves the Billion Capture+ is a reliable phone built to work from the get go. But what it’s missing is a little inspiration. It may be argued that the design of Flipkart’s debut phone is clunky, basic and ends up being a me-too in the face of competition. And that’s understandable, because by their own admission, Flipkart took inputs from users and made a phone that addresses almost everything the users want. Yet, considering almost everything about the Billion Capture+ is identical to Xiaomi’s Mi A1 (review), which we have rated as the best performing budget smartphone, Flipkart’s choice of design and using cheaper materials could make users pass it over for the Mi A1.

Display: Nothing dazzling

The Billion Capture+ houses a 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel of 1080x1920 pixels resolution and 401 ppi pixel density. Smartphone enthusiasts will immediately tell you that’s the average display quality expected in this range and there is nothing that really dazzles here. It is 2017 now and phones have started to shave off the bezels around the sides of the display as well as adopt a taller 18:9 aspect ratio that provides more screen real estate to multi-task and watch videos more immersively. The Flipkart Billion Capture+ however, sticks to the 16:9 display that was common last year.

With phones like LG Q6 and even the Micromax Infinity in the market, it will be hard to pick up the Billion Capture+ over the others, not only because it fails to follow the latest trend, but also the display itself doesn’t come off to be that good. The screen has a lot of glare and poor sunlight legibility. That’s mainly because the display reaches a maximum luminance of 454 lux which isn’t that high. The colours are not as punchy as one would expect from an AMOLED panel, but for the price, it just about does its job and leaves you asking for more.

Camera: Two doesn’t always tango

The rear camera on the Capture+ is the phone’s marquee feature with most of the branding hyping the phone’s imaging prowess. Flipkart saw dual cameras on phones grow by a whopping 123 percent in the first half of 2017. Starting from the Honor 6X, dual cameras increasingly started trickling down to the budget range and the Billion Capture+ is no exception. The phone features a stack of two 13-megapixel cameras on the back with f/2.0 aperture. The primary sensor shoots in RGB while the secondary sensor takes in monochrome data. The phone relies on the Snapdragon 625’s Spectra ISP to process the data from the two sensors to offer images that are sharply detailed and well-lit, of course under optimal circumstances. The Billion Capture+ doesn’t offer best in class images, but it’s reliable at the least, if not a bit unpredictable.

Portrait mode

                                                                                                                                                                       Shot using the portrait mode

Flipkart’s application of the portrait mode is a combination of hardware and software, but mostly software. The phone leverages the two cameras on the back to acquire depth information and then uses software to blur the edges. The application, as you will see in the sample shot is not perfect. The edges around the subject are blurred non-uniformly. Moreover, the blur itself looks quite artificial and the resulting image looks like it was Photoshopped. The photo itself takes an awfully long time to get processed. We have seen better application of the portrait mode, especially from the Stereo Mode in the Xiaomi Mi A1. However, the portrait mode here is not restricted by poor lighting and neither does it crop the image while taking a portrait shot.

Unlike the OnePlus 5 or the Mi A1, the secondary camera on the Capture+ doesn’t have a telephoto lens. As a result, the phone does not have the 2X optical zoom which is one of Mi A1’s USPs. If you have to take a closeup shot of a subject, you have to zoom in digitally, which basically crops the frame, resulting in loss of detail, which is standard across all phones that zooms into photos digitally as loss of detail is imminent.

Closeup shot taken in daylight (left); 100% Crop of the photo (right)

The camera on the Capture+ however performs like the ones on any other good budget smartphones provided the light is optimal. Under natural sunlight, the photos come out sharp and well-detailed. The colours are faithful to the original scene and the white balance is quite accurate. The Capture+ handles colours really well. It can reproduce the colours with vibrance and while they don’t really pop out of the screen, it is nearly faithful to the original frame. The sky in the sample below is a testament to that.

Landscape photo shot in the day

More than the daylight landscapes, the Capture+ camera can take macro shots of well-lit subjects really well. This is where the quality is at par with most of its competition. In the photo of the plant we used in the sample, the green leaves pop out of the frame and even a 100 percent crop of the photo doesn’t distort the details much.

Macro shot taken in the day (left); 100% crop of the photo (right)

Switching to incandescent lighting, photos shot by the Capture+ are sharply detailed and well-lit. However, the white balance comes out a bit off as the camera fails to adapt to the warm tones in the frame. In the sample, the Buddha statue glows warmly against the lamp light, but the photo reduces the warmth forcibly. The camera manages to capture the details in the books in the second photo well.

Shot under indoor lighting

Under low light though, the camera on the Capture+ is once again at par with the competition, but not in a good way. Like most budget phones, the Capture+ too fails when the lighting is not proper. Low light landscape photos lose out on sharpness and details, and noise creeps in. However, if phones like the Moto G5 Plus and the Xiaomi Mi A1 can improve on the low light photography immensely, I don’t see why the Capture+ also can’t. There is also significant shutter lag and even a minor shake of the hand results in a blurred out photo. But that’s quite in line with how most other budget smartphones fail at capturing low light. Partly lit frames, however are ambitiously produced. The camera notches the ISO up the highest to capture as much light as it could to get the details right, letting a lot of noise creep in the edges.

Performance: Not the raging bull

The Billion Capture+ is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which is this year’s most popular mid-range processor, and for good reason. Qualcomm has built the Snapdragon 625 on a 14nm FinFet process and uses two quad-core clusters of Cortex A53 cores with clock speed peaking at 2.0GHz. Thanks to the FinFet transistors, the Snapdragon 625 is also more power efficient than its predecessors. Then again, does the Billion Capture+ make use of the extra firepower and efficiency optimally?

Billion Capture+ Benchmark Scores

We received the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant for review. There is also a 3GB+32GB variant, for which the performance results may be different.

However, real world performance is in line with most other budget smartphones on the market. We played Injustice 2 on the phone and while the graphics and gameplay were decent, it did take some time to load. Multi-tasking seemed fine and apps in split-screen ran smooth. Thankfully, the phone didn’t heat up abnormally when recording a video or while gaming.

There were occasional stutters while using the phone, with apps randomly crashing from time to time. The phone also froze a couple of times. The camera app, that is proprietary to Billion, lagged a bit, especially while taking portrait shots. The photo took too long to process, with the app even showing a countdown icon.

Software: Goodness of pure, stock Android

Flipkart’s choice to not meddle with Google’s stock Android shows it listened to customer feedback of the competition intently. The Capture+ runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat, bringing features like split-screen and a two-pane notification panel on the table. There is no additional layer of animation or UI elements to tax the processor and use up RAM. As a result, day-to-day operations on the phone are lag free and smooth.

Flipkart does promise an update to Android 8.0 Oreo, although it didn’t give a timeline. At the time of testing, the device was still on the August security patch, which could be an indicator that the update will take its own sweet time to arrive. At this point, phones should have Oreo out of the box anyway.

The phone also offers unlimited cloud storage for files, photos and videos. The Capture+ relies on Smartron’s TronX cloud infrastructure to provide the feature. It allows users to sync their files, contacts, messages, call logs, photos and videos to the cloud. The TronX app is exclusive to Flipkart phones and can’t be accessed through a third party app on another smartphone which could be problematic as the data is basically locked down to one device only which beats the point of having unlimited cloud storage in the first place.

There is also the case of bloatware in the phone. But that’s hardly surprising as this is a phone by an e-commerce giant. So expectedly, the Flipkart app, Myntra, as well as the company’s peer-to-peer payment app PhonePe are there, along with SonyLiv, a video streaming app from Sony, and an action arcade game named Shadow Fight. Barring Shadow Fight, none of the other apps can be uninstalled and will take up storage space.

Battery: Will take you through the day

The Billion Capture+ is powered by a 3,500mAh battery with fast charging. Flipkart promises 7 hours with 15 minutes of charging, but that is debatable. In our testing, the phone charged up to 60 percent in an hour, which isn’t really the fast charging standard as most fast charging-enabled phone can charge the device to its capacity in an hour. The battery however doesn’t last a full work day. It will deliver three to four hours of screen-on time with social media, gaming and photography. This means you have to charge this once in the evening to make the most of it. When left overnight, the phone lost two percent charge in six hours with the Wi-Fi on and emails and social media notifications incoming.

Bottomline

The Billion Capture+ is a sturdy performer that packs almost every punch available in the mid-range segment. But while it does that on the spec-sheet, its real world usage is quite different. The phone will be reliable to use on most days. It is a good phone nonetheless, but it’s just not the best. As far as dual cameras go, it’s best to pitch a little more money to get the Xiaomi Mi A1. At its highest price of Rs 12,999, the Billion Capture+ can be passed over for a 64GB Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 or if it can be stretched a little higher, the 32GB Moto G5 Plus is available at Rs 13,999, which is quite the value for money.
