Oracle 'Very Close' To Deal On Tiktok: Donald Trump

US officials had confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance

Washington, United States:

Silicon Valley tech giant Oracle is "very close" to sealing a deal to become the US partner to Chinese-owned video app TikTok to avert a ban in the United States, President Donald Trump said Tuesday.

Trump's comments came a day after US officials confirmed that Oracle was set to make a deal with TikTok parent ByteDance ahead of a deadline set by the US president, who has called the app a national security threat.

"I heard they're very close to a deal," Trump told reporters, adding that "we're going to make a decision pretty soon" on whether to approve the tie-up, which would make Oracle a "trusted technology provider" for TikTok.

Details of the deal remained unclear. But the Financial Times reported that ByteDance was to place TikTok's global business in a new US-headquartered company with Oracle investing as a minority shareholder along with other US investors.

CNBC reported the Trump administration could approve the deal as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

If the transaction happens, it would avoid an outright sale of TikTok while giving a stake in the popular app to Oracle, whose founder Larry Ellison is a prominent Trump supporter.

Trump told reporters Tuesday he had "high respect for Larry Ellison."

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents had also tested positive for covid and were treated in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Last week, I took a COVID test after having a light fever. Its report was negative. I was tested again as I was feeling unwell. The report has now come as positive," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Adesh Gupta said he was in quarantine during the last week and advised those who had come in contact with him to get themselves tested.

Delhi BJP media cell head Ashok Goel said Adesh Gupta was found positive in his third COVID-19 test. The previous two tests, including an RT-PCR, came out as negative, he said.

"The Delhi BJP president underwent a rapid antigen test last week and later, an RT-PCR test, both of which showed him to be COVID negative.  He had body ache but no fever. He was again tested using the RT-PCR method, the report of which came on Wednesday as COVID-19 positive," he said.

Party leaders said Adesh Gupta's parents, who live in his ancestral village in Uttar Pradesh, had also tested positive for COVID-19 and were treated in Delhi 15-20 days ago.

Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP office on Pant Marg was closed for sanitisation on Wednesday, a day after 17 people there tested positive for COVID-19.

These include staff members and their families who live on the party office premises.

On Monday, a peon of the Delhi BJP office tested positive for COVID-19, after which all the staff and their family members, numbering around 40, were tested.

Two BJP MPs from Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi and Parvesh Verma, were found COVID-19 positive ahead of the Parliament session that started earlier this week.

Verdict

The ASUS ROG GX501 Zephyrus bridges the gap between performance and portability. At Digit, we simply can’t count the number of times that we’ve been asked for recommendations that could not only provide great portability but also not compromise on performance. Often, the answer was an either-or but never could you have an option with both. The ROG GX501 gives you great portability thanks to its 18 mm thickness and low weight of 2.25 kg. However, it’s still a 15.6-inch laptop which will dissuade some buyers. On the performance front, the Max-Q enabled GTX 1080 can easily handle every single AAA game running at Ultra settings. The downside is that the battery doesn’t last long and that was never a concern while gaming. However, even with normal everyday tasks, we’re gettings 2-2.5 hours at max. There is a solution for that, the CPU and GPU are extremely over-powered for normal day-to-day tasks. So we used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to ramp down the CPU while we were not gaming. A similar thing can be done to the GPU using MSI Afterburner. We easily managed to get more than 3 hours with these enhancements, however, had we played around with the power profiles a little longer, we could have come out with a better profile. Overall, the ASUS ROG GX501 Zephyrus with its unique proposition offers what no other laptop does in the Indian market right now – a slim and powerful machine. The ball now lies in the competition’s court to see when the other Max-Q laptops make it to India.

ASUS GX501 Zephyrus Gaming Laptop detailed review

ASUS’s GX501 or Zephyrus has been enjoying quite a bit of attention thanks to it being the first gaming laptop to feature NVIDIA’s Max-Q technology. NVIDIA’s Max-Q is a set of technologies pertaining to physical design, electrical design and thermal design. Currently, the GTX 1060, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 GPUs have Max-Q variants and the Zephyrus is part of the first wave of laptops to feature them. Others include the Acer Predator Triton 700, GIGABYTE Aorus X5 MD, MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-002, GS73VR Stealth Pro-033 and the Clevo P950HR. Except the Zephyrus, we couldn’t find listings for the other models in India. At the Computex 2017 ASUS press event, it was revealed that NVIDIA and ASUS have a joint design facility from where the Zephyrus was born, which makes it the first ever gaming laptop with Max-Q.

Naturally, we were a bit curious to have a look at how a Max-Q laptop is designed. So we took the unit apart to take a peak inside and discovered an entirely different approach to cooling. Before we get into that, let’s have a look at the specs.

ASUS GX501 Zephyrus Specifications

The ASUS GX501 Zephyrus is powered by the Intel Core i7-7700HQ and an NVIDIA GTX 1080 (Max-Q). So we’re expecting quite a lot from the unit, what stands to be seen is where the laptop throttles, if at all it does, and how much do we end up losing out on performance, if at all throttling should happen.

Weight

Despite the thinness of the laptop, ASUS has managed to squeeze in a 50 Whr battery which is commendable feat, however, with a GTX 1080 that’s set to be drained quickly. The other noteworthy addition is that of a 230 W power adapter. We’ve seen some units from the competition carry lower wattage adapters since the GPU is designed to work for a lower power envelope, with the Zephyrus, it seems we’ll not have that issue.

Chassis Build

he Zephyrus has a very minimalist approach. The top half of the clam has a brushed metal finish with a sharp line where it appears as if two halves meet just like the confluence of two streams.

Asus Zephyrus

There’s hardly any elevation in the centre of the laptop. It’s very thing coming in at 17.9 mm.

Asus Zephyrus

The underside is very different from all the laptops we’ve seen for a really long time. Why? The absence of vents, that‘s why. There are two lean vents on either side but they seem ridiculously ill-prepared to handle an NVIDIA GTX 1080.

Asus Zephyrus

It’s only when you open the lid, that you see vents magically appear out of nowhere.

Asus Zephyrus

This is because the entire flat panel under the laptop acts as a hatch. Opening the lid extends two levers which adds separation between the hatch and the bottom of the laptop as we can see in the lower portion of the above image. Upon removing the bottom hatch, we see a completely sealed off underside. All that’s exposed are two cooling fans which intake from the bottom. And then there’s the hinge that extends outwards to elevate the Zephyrus. Let’s take a closer look at the hinge.

Asus Zephyrus

It appears to be fairly sturdy and the thickness of the metal plates that form the hinge mirror what we’ve seen in other laptops. The small part that’s jutting out goes into the plastic guide that’s shown below.

The only concern here is that over time, this guide is going to erode a bit. So having metal inserts in the groove or making the entire thing out of machined metal would have been a better approach.
Not being satisfied with a huge plain plastic sheet, we then proceeded to further dissect the laptop only to come across quite a bit of FRCs. Thanks to the thin construction, ASUS has managed to make good use of the limited space they set out to work with. Which is why, once opened up, we ended up with this.

Asus Zephyrus

The display panel is on the left and the hatch is on the right. Upon closer inspection, we see that hatch is mostly comprised of a keyboard and vents for hot air to slip out. Since most of the heat is being vented from the rear, there’s barely anything coming out through the top hatch. Adding dust filters to the vents on the hatch is a good move.

Asus Zephyrus

Here’s how the motherboard appears from the top. We can see that the cooler takes up the most real estate with the battery coming in at a close second. There’s one slot for RAM on this side of the motherboard which is populated by a SAMSUNG 16 GB DDR4 DIMM rated at 2400 MHz.

Asus Zephyrus

Because of the space taken up by the cooler and the battery, we see why ASUS couldn’t squeeze in a memory card reader. The cooling assembly has multiple heatpipes routed right over the CPU, GPU, VRM and the Memory chips for the CPU. Nothing’s exposed aside from the PCH.

Asus Zephyrus

The audio on the GX501 Zephyrus is very standard, and these aren’t down-firing speakers which is the common arrangement seen in most laptops today. Such an arrangement ends up being louders which is a nice thing, however, you are also susceptible to dust collection. Since these pores are really minute, you won’t have as much dust getting accumulated as compared to an arrangement with really big vents.

Asus Zephyrus

The topside, has a classy ROG logo with activity LEDs placed right near the edge. The LEDs aren’t distracting when using the laptops in a dark environment.

Asus Zephyrus

The build of the GX501 Zephyrus is really unique. We can see why NVIDIA chose ASUS as  the first partner to come out with the MAX-Q laptops. This was revealed by NVIDIA CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang at the COMPUTEX 2017 press conference. Cramming in all the features expected from a high-end gaming laptops without all the accompanying bulk really sets MAX-Q laptops apart. Moreover, they sport a hefty price tag too. However, with the new Intel Kabylake-G CPUs, we see this trend to become common and affordable soon.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Bringing the keyboard lower on the body isn’t a new concept, however, it certainly is necessary in this case as the GTX 1080 should start heating up under load. And since the laptop is particularly thin, the touch temperature would be high. However, with this design the user will not face any discomfort. As seen from the chassis design, the keyboard rests atop the battery so there’s no worry of higher touch temperature at all.

The absence of a numpad can be really irksome for those who’re used to a gaming on the desktop. Especially, if you’re into MMOs wherein a lot of macros are needed. Having the touchpad turn into a numpad makes up for that by a margin. In this case, you still need to glance at the pad since you might end up accidentally pressing the wrong macro as there are no physical marks to distinguish between the different keys. You never want to be “that support guy” who accidentally casts a charm right in the midst of a boss battle instead of a heal. That kind of accidents will get you booted from the raid and possibly from the guild as well.

Asus Zephyrus

Lastly, it’s nice to see that the ‘Home’ and ‘End’ keys being incorporated in the last two buttons atop the touchpad. Being one of the most used keys on the keyboard for us, it’s an appreciated configuration.

I/O ports

The thing with thin laptops is that you have to resort to thinner ports. If not, then the bezel around the ports end up becoming too thin and tend to bend. Which is why you see USB Type-C ports on thin gaming laptops and convertibles. Since the ASUS ROG GX501 is thicker than most convertibles, they’ve added USB Type-A ports on both sides. All of them being USB 3.1 except the Type-C port which is 3.2. There’s an HDMI port included. The only obvious ports that aren’t present are the Ethernet port and a card reader.

Asus Zephyrus

We do get USB Type-C to Ethernet adapters in case you need them. However, an Ethernet port is 13.5 mm tall so once we take out the thickness of the display from the overall thickness of 18 mm and allow for clearance as well, it becomes completely unfeasible to have an Ethernet port. Gaming is generally preferred over wired connections for the better ping, we didn’t find a major difference in the ping while playing over Wi-Fi. It should be noted that we played PLAYERUNKOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS over Wi-Fi and our ping is generally around the 15 ms mark over wired connection. With Wi-Fi, we saw it hover around 18-19 ms which is still very good.

If you look at the GX501 from an internal perspective then the bottom half is devoted for the battery and the top half is devoted for the cooling assembly as shown in the image above.  Towards the sides, they’ve managed to squeeze in a portion of the motherboard onto which the ports and the PCIe SSD are mounted. A card reader slot takes up quite a bit of space both vertically and horizontally. If one had been included, then we’re looking at losing out on two existing ports. That’s a trade off we’d rather not make. So, we can see that the card reader wasn’t included for a very good reason.

Display

The ASUS ROG GX501 features a 24-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1920x1080. Sure, the GTX 1080 will easily handle 4K gaming but we believe that the 1080p panel was chosen to ensure the GPU didn’t get overworked. If you were to switch on Dynamic Super Resolution, then you’ll get a the same compute overhead as a 4K panel. And the GPU should heat up to an unnecessary level.

Asus Zephyrus

Asus Zephyrus

The webcam is HD ready which seems to be the norm these days. Image clarity wasn’t out of this world but it’s enough for most use cases. Should you need better quality it’s always advisable to go with a Logitech C920 or better.
Since the Zephyrus makes use of the fancy hatch system, the rear of the laptop gets a little elevated upon being completely open. At this point, the display is at an angle of 120 degrees from the base. Compared to some of the previously tested units, this seems a bit low if you were to keep the Zephyrus on your lap. Anything over 140 degrees is where things start getting more comfortable. And as mentioned earlier, your lap isn’t the right place for this laptop.

The panel is quite well sealed off, there’s hardly any bleed which is consistent with most laptops in this price bracket.

Performance

We’re looking at a very common configuration with the ASUS GX501 Zephyrus. The Intel Core i7 7700HQ coupled with 24 GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 2400 MHz ensure a pretty high headroom for most mundane tasks. The GTX 1080 MAX-Q just takes it  to a different level. Almost every AAA title gets more than 60 FPS and you can even switch on NVIDIA DSR for some of the titles for some extra smoothing.

We started off with CineBench and R15 and the GX501 Zephyrus scored 160 in 1T and 735 in nT benchmarks. These scores seem to be on par with the other Intel 7700HQ laptops we've tested. WinRAR’s compression benchmark scored 7843 KB/s which is very similar to the MSI GE62 7RE and the Acer Nitro AN515-51 that we’ve tested earlier. As for PCMark8, we used Accelerated to leverage the GPU and ended up with a score of 5288 on PCMark8 Work (Acc.) and 5049 in PCMark8 Home (Acc.). We had a few crashes on our 3DMark FireStrike Extreme runs while all other 3DMark benchmarks ran without any issues.

Storage

The Samsung SM961 is one of the top SSDs you can get in the OEM market. This NVMe SSD can give you about 3,500 MBps in QD32 transfers for large file sizes while for 4K writes you'll end up with about 145 MBps. These are pretty high numbers, after all, Samsung has been leading the SSD race for quite some time now. Honestly, there's no need for RAID 0 in this laptop with such high transfer rates.

Asus Zephyrus

Moreover, this is not a lot capacity unit, it's a 1 TB NVMe SSD. That alone costs upwards of Rs.45,000, so you can understand why this laptop costs about Rs.3 lakhs.

Wi-Fi

For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the ASUS GX501 Zephyrus uses an Intel 8265 which is a dual-band 802.11ac module. It uses a 2T2R configuration to obtain a peak transfer rate of 867 Mbps. We used iPerf to see how well the add-on card fared over the ‘ac’ band. We managed to get 492 Mbps on the throughput and about 92 Mbps via a single stream which is quite good for streaming HD content. In fact, you can stream multiple 4K videos just for the heck of it. For gaming, we always prefer to be wired. Or at least, you need to maintain a clear LOS with the Wi-Fi adapter to keep latency at the minimum.

Gaming

The GTX 1080 MAX-Q is an optimised version of the normal GTX 1080. While gaming on the Zephyrus, we ended up with 110 FPS in Battlefield 1 while on Ultra settings. Similarly, DOOM scored 130 FPS, The Witcher 3 scored 61 FPS and PUBG hit about 78 FPS. We then moved onto 3DMark in which we managed to obtain 18222 in Fire Strike and 31021 in Sky Diver.

In TimeSpy, we scored 5661 which is pretty decent too. Overall, we'd say that the MAX-Q variant of the GTX 1080 is more comparable with the normal GTX 1070 which isn't all that bad when you consider the fact that all that power is clubbed into such a thin form factor.

Pricing

At the end of the day, you are looking at a laptop powered by a GTX 1080 MAX-Q and Intel Core i7-7700HQ laptop. It doesn't match up to the normal GTX 1080, but the normal GTX 1080 would never fit in your back-pack as easy as the Zephyrus does. We've seen how ASUS has picked a really great display and has left no stone unturned to give you your money's worth. The SSD was one such example. It costs roughly 15% of the overall laptop and is one of the best SSDs you can buy. The keypad configuration keeps your hands away from the heat sources giving you the comfort to game endlessly. Also, this is the first every MAX-Q laptop, so ASUS is hoping to learn from user feedback as to what needs to be done in the future. As of now, the GX501 and the Acer Triton 700 are the only MAX-Q laptops available in India which are this thin. Alienware has a MAX-Q variant as well, though the chassis is way thicker. For being in such a unique position, both ASUS and Acer command a hefty price premium for their MAX-Q laptops. Once more variants enter the market, you should see better pricing.

Ivanka Trump dubs father Donald 'most authentic president' and rival Joe Biden 'vessel'

The White House advisor called Biden "a vessel for whatever the fringe of the party or the mainstream media want him to be."

Ivanka Trump, senior White House advisor and first daughter of the United States, has been actively participating in the presidential campaign for her father, Donald Trump.

During her latest visit to North Carolina on Monday, Ivanka Trump chatted with prospective voters and outlined their choices in the upcoming presidential election in November. While visiting a bakery in Wilmington, the president's daughter said the state's motto, "To be, rather than to seem," also reflected the choice between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden. The mother-of-three was attending a "fireside chat" which was moderated by Trump 2020 National Press Secretary Hogan Gidley, reports Daily Mail.

"On one hand you have a person who is a vessel for whatever the fringe of the party or the mainstream media want him to be, but on the other hand you have someone who is arguably the most authentic president we've ever had," the 38-year-old said.

Her recent visit to North Carolina, which is crucial in her father's re-election campaign, was her fifth visit to the state in three-and-half years. The POTUS himself has made several visits to the swing state in the past couple of weeks. North Carolina with 15 electoral votes is the most volatile of the swing states and is considered a must-win for Trump this time around as well.

Meanwhile, Trump's ex-wife Ivana Trump praised the work being done by Ivanka and said her daughter could "definitely" be the country's first female president. "She's in the White House every day. She's next to her father every day," the 71-year-old said in an interview on the British talk show "Loose Women."

"She knows all what is going around. I think she could be one day the first girl, or woman, president. Definitely," the former model added.

The businesswoman, who was married to Trump from 1977 to 1991, further exclaimed: "She's smart as hell. She's beautiful. She's au courant. And how much more can you have?"

President Trump himself had floated his eldest daughter's name as a future presidential pick during a campaign rally in New Hampshire last month. After criticising Biden's pick of Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, the 74-year-old had said: "They're all saying 'we want Ivanka.' I don't blame them."

Verdict

The Canon EOS 750D is a neatly crafted DSLR in the entry segment that's made for the budding photographer buying his/her very first DSLR. While the dynamic range in photographs is compromised, its brilliant viewfinder, ease of usage, and overall competence make up for the 750D’s limitation. On the spec sheet, the Nikon D5500 offers a higher dynamic range, which would make it a better choice for amateur/semi-professional photographers with identical specifications and features. But at a few thousands less, the Canon EOS 750D is an excellent buy in the entry DSLR segment now.

Canon EOS 750D detailed review

The Canon EOS 750D, coming almost two years after the EOS 700D, is a notable upgrade over its predecessor’s offering. We got the standard kit, combined with an EOS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Out of the box, the EOS 750D looks like a neat, compact DSLR - pretty much the way Canon’s other entry-level DSLR offerings look like. It has a polycarbonate body, which feels quite well-built and sturdy. Edges and curves have been constantly refined since Canon’s 550D, but with the 750D, Canon decided to make more upright with rounded corners, against its predecessor 700D’s rounded sides.

We took the EOS 750D out for a few spins across the city, and this is how it fared.

Body and Design
The Canon EOS 750D is noticeably less concentrated on giving the impression of a DSLR trying to look attractive, which the 700D somewhat tried with its low-flung, rounded sides. As with most budget DSLRs, the 750D has a polycarbonate body instead of magnesium alloy found on more expensive cameras. This cost-effective framework makes entry-segment DSLRs lighter than the professional ones, which help amateur photographers to get accustomed to their new camera. The 750D body has a sturdy build, without compromising on making the DSLR feel strong. At a body-only weight of 525 grams, the 750D is 15 grams lighter than the 700D, but 140g heavier than the similarly priced Canon EOS 100D. Nikon’s offerings at a similar price range are the D5300 and D5500, which weigh 480g and 420g respectively.

Canon has managed to fit in the controls and buttons in a simple, easy arrangement. The mode wheel has a number of higher features amiss, although it provides ample auto-modes for beginners. The control wheel is well placed, easy to reach. Waterproofing is amiss, although you would be hard pushed to find waterproofing in this price range. Of notable DSLRs, only the recently-launched Pentax K-S2 has waterproofing in this price range. The EOS 750D is all about ease of usage. Its controls are neatly arranged in an easy-to-understand format, coupled with Canon’s simple interface that aids beginners and professionals alike. It does not get a second LED display for controls, which is usually found in higher end cameras. The EOS 760D, this one’s older brother, gets more controls along with the LED display control panel, so if you are looking at a 70k-ish price bracket and are adept at handling DSLRs, you would rather consider it over the 750D.

While the EOS 750D has the standard EF lens mount on it, the camera does not give us the confidence of being sturdy enough to mount bigger, heavier lenses like the EF 300mm telephoto, or the 100-400mm telephoto zoom. But that is pretty much the case with most DSLRs in this budget and it doesn’t really pose a threat to the excellent usability of the EOS 750D. Overall, an excellent proposition.

Screen and Viewfinder
The Canon EOS 750D has the same display panel as the EOS 700D, a Clear View II LCD with a 3:2 aspect ratio and touchscreen operation support. The display swivels by 270 degrees, which makes shooting at awkward angles much easier. The display is bright, and has a number of electronic controls inside the Menu to tweak it to full brightness, to retain sunlight visibility. Touch response is smooth, allowing focus tracking with fingers, one-touch photo capture and easy swipe-viewing of images, very good features for a beginner.

Like its major competitor, the Nikon D5500, the Canon EOS 750D has a pentaprism viewfinder covering 95% of the photograph area. This means that while clicking photographs, an additional five percent information is incumbent on the sensor, but not possible to view. Yet again, the Pentax K-S2 scores with a 100-percent-covering viewfinder. The EOS 750D is no mean feat, though, featuring an excellent display reproducing accurate colours, and a responsive touchscreen.

Performance
Focusing
This is an area where the Canon EOS 750D has majorly improved over the 700D’s 9-point autofocus system. While it is not as swiftly accurate as the Nikon D5500’s 39-point autofocus system, it does beat the Pentax K-S2, which features an 11-point autofocus system. The 19-point phase-detection autofocus mechanism is definitely a step down from contrast detection autofocus, but with the smaller sensor and Canon’s Digic 6 image processor powering the 750D, the phase-detection mechanism keeps the camera fast, and autofocus is zippy. The seven-column autofocus points on the viewfinder track subjects for fast focusing, and is consistent and accurate. In Live View mode, focusing and focus tracking are both fast and accurate - there is no jerk in focus shifts, and the servo works very smoothly and silently, so that noise from the image stabiliser of the lens does not interfere with video recording.

Burst Shooting and Connectivity
One excellent aspect about the Canon EOS 750D is that it does not suffer when used extensively. Shooting bursts is at 5 frames per second. For RAW files, burst photography is limited to eight files, while it extends up to an impressive 940 files in the JPEG format. In terms of connectivity, there are options to sync the camera with an app on your phone, via wifi and NFC. Alongside image transfer and shutter control remotely, there are also options for adjusting other settings on the camera too.

Imaging and Videography
The 24.2-megapixel sensor is quite a major improvement over the 18-megapixel sensor of the Canon EOS 700D. Focusing, however, remains slightly on the softer side owing to the anti-aliasing (AA) filter. While the AA filter does reduce noise in images, focusing requires a considerable amount of effort to hit accuracy while being operated manually.

Shutter speed has the standard range: 30 seconds (bulb) to 1/4000”. Sensitivity varies from ISO 100-12800, with option for notching it up to 25600, although it becomes extremely noisy in these ISO levels. The EOS 750D has a dynamic range of 11 stops, and the low dynamic range is visible in photos against lit backgrounds. There is a multi-exposure HDR mode that slightly improves the range of contrasts, although you would need a camera stand to shoot in this mode. While this does hinder the overall quality in some exceptional cases, it is not a major flaw that takes the shine away from the EOS 750D.

The video quality, as seen in previous Canon DSLRs, is quite good with ample lighting conditions. The 750D does not disappoint, either, and it remains a good contender for independent, amateur to semi-professional filmmakers who have taken to Canon’s video production quality a lot. The highest video recording capability here is at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps, the same as previous. Additionally, to aid serious videography, Canon has included support to plug in a unidirectional condenser boom microphone with a 3.5mm audio jack, and also options to control the volume of audio recording.

Here are a few test shots taken with the Canon EOS 750D, in varying conditions:

Canon EOS 750D image gallery

Bottomline
While we are yet to test the Nikon D5500 and the Pentax K-S2, the Canon EOS 750D is a brilliant DSLR even without comparing it to others. The cheaper price point does not compromise on build quality, regular photograph quality is excellent and video resolution is competent. Adding to these is the excellent autofocus architecture of this camera that, which makes it an absolute learners delight. More often, the autofocus motor was faster than focusing manually, simply because of the soft focus nature that the AA filter imparts to the camera.

However, certain factors need to be taken into account. At a similar price point, both the Nikon D5500 and the Pentax K-S2 offers higher dynamic range. Additionally, the Nikon D5500 comes with a wider, faster 39-point AF system, while the Pentax K-S2 comes with complete waterproofing in a comparatively smaller body. The Nikon is also lighter than the EOS 750D. Apart from these added benefits that these two cameras offer on the spec sheet, the rest should pretty much be the same.

If you want a more rugged usage which involves a lot of splashing around in watery fields, the Pentax might just be the way to go. For a better silhouette representation alongside good regular photography performance, the Nikon D5500 seems to be a better option. If these little factors do not bother you much, you can totally opt for the Canon EOS 750D. At Rs. 45,500 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens bundled, the Canon EOS 750D is a very recommendable DSLR to buy.

Verdict

The Mi Box 4K works great for SDR content, and even 4K content. Its HDR performance for Netflix is good but falls short with its HDR performance in Prime Videos. It has a USB port making it convenient to use with external storage devices. The Android UI is smooth and the data saver feature is great. It also has a compact and easy to use remote control. You can consider this device if you are looking to upgrade your 1080p or 4K TV to the smart TV experience. To make the most of HDR content, you are better off looking elsewhere.

Mi Box 4K detailed review

Despite the growing popularity of smart TV streaming devices like the Fire TV stick, Chromecast, Apple TV (for the premium buyers), and more are gaining popularity. As much as I like asking the question, the answer is quite simple. It is a cheaper alternative to upgrading your TV. Say you have a TV from 2015 or 2016. It still has a couple of years of life left in the panel. But the Netflix app on that TV has stopped working or the TV wasn’t really smart, to begin with. In such cases, a streaming device is a great accessory to have. We have also seen a lot of budget smart TV users opt for devices like these as their TVs aren’t getting updates or the OTT apps aren't working properly. So if you are one that is looking to upgrade your TV experience to a smart TV experience, then there is a new device to consider - the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K. As the name suggests, the device has support for 4K, it also supports HDR and runs on Android TV giving you access to all the popular apps and a voice-enabled remote control. Is it a worthy contender in the streaming device space? Let's find out!

Mi Box 4K - Specifications

4K support: Yes
HDMI 2.1: No
HDR 10: Yes
Dolby Vision: No
Dolby Atmos: No
Dolby audio+DTS2.0: Yes
Processor: 64-bit 2.0Ghz CPU
RAM: 2GB DDR3
Built-in storage: 8GB eMMC storage
HDMI Configuration: HDMI 2.0b
USB port: Yes, USB 2.0
Audio out: 3.5mm only
Voice-enabled remote control: Yes

Mi Box 4K - What's in the box

In the box, you get the device along with an HDMI cable, power cable and a voice-enabled remote control. You, unfortunately, don't get batteries and Xiaomi tells me that “Battery air shipping is an issue in India. We would have to send it by road otherwise, which will take much more time”. So make sure you have a pair of AAA batteries at hand when you order this device. One thing to note is that the HDMI cable isn't very long. It is quite short and could be a problem for those that have wall mounted their TV. Other than that you get pretty much everything you need in the box.

Mi Box 4K - Build and Design

The first thing that you will notice is how tiny the box is. It will literally fit in the palm of your hand. It is 9.52cm in length, 9.52cm in width and 1.67cm in thickness. It weighs a mere 148 grams, making it the slimmest and sleeker streaming box we have seen. It could be mistaken for a toy, it is so small. The tiny form factor means this can hide in your entertainment setup with ease. It has a matte black finish all around and all the connectivity options are at the back. We have a 3.5mm audio port, along with the HDMI port, the USB port and the power port. It is minimalist and frankly, gets the job done quite well. The Mi Box 4K has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 as well.

Mi Box 4K connectivity options.

Mi Box 4K - Remote Control

Speaking of the remote control, it is quite similar to what we’ve seen with the Mi TV. It is light, ergonomic and easy to use. The only gripe I have with it is that it lacks a mute button which is really handy when I need to answer a call and don't want to pause the “news” on YouTube, but rather, mute it. It has the power button, the Google Assistant button, the circular D-pad with a centre OK button, back, home, menu, volume rocker and Netflix and Prime Video hotkeys. It is as functional as the Fire TV stick remote control if a comparison needs to be drawn.

The Mi Box 4K has a minimalist remote control.

Mi Box 4K - Performance

Ok, so we are going to break down the performance into how the device performs with SDR, HDR, and 4K, content. We will use apps like Netflix, Prime Videos, and YouTube to judge the performance. We will use an LG B9 OLED TV and a Yamaha YAS-209 soundbar as our connected devices. For reference, we will use Netflix, Prime Videos, and YouTube built-in apps available on the TV and also the same apps on the Fire TV Stick 4K to judge if there is any audio/video difference that we can spot in the performance of the Mi Box 4K.

Mi Box 4K display output resolution.

Mi Box 4K - SDR Performance

The SDR performance of the Mi Box 4K is pretty good. Be it movie trailers from YouTube or shows like Young Sheldon on Prime Videos, the Big Bang Theory or even Friend on Netflix. All shows that are in SDR looked bright, vivid and were well enjoyable on the TV. Even an older show like Seinfeld on Prime Video looked great on the Mi Box 4K. For comparison sake, we played some of the content through the TVs native apps and even the Fire TV Stick 4K, and the performance is homogenous for the most part.

Mi Box 4K - 4K Performance

When connected to a 5Ghz Wi-Fi connection, the quality picks up to 4K pretty fast and stays there. However there is a problem with 5Ghz connectivity, but more on that later. For 4K we resorted to a library of 4K content from Netflix and YouTube and honestly, no complaints here.  Changing modes on the TV from standard to Cinema and more did make the colours pop, but that's the case for any streaming device connected to the TV.

If you have a 1080p TV, then all the 4K content is limited to 1080p and that's ok as it looks good on the 1080p TV. For reference, we saw content using the Mi Box 4K on a Sony W950D 1080p TV as well.

Mi Box 4K supports HDR and 5.1 surround sound.

Mi Box 4K - HDR Performance

This is where things get very interesting and the Mi Box starts losing its immense appeal. So before we get into the HDR performance, know this. If you have a 1080p TV or a 4K TV that does not support HDR, you should do fine consuming content using this device. However, once you get into HDR territory, especially on a TV that's capable of displaying good HDR, then the Mi Box isn't a great option. To recap, we are using the LG B9 OLED TV as our device to test HDR.

One thing to note is that when we connect any HDR-capable device, be it a PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, etc. when HDR content starts to play, the TV recognizes that HDR content is playing (be it HDR 10 or Dolby Vision) and switches the TVs picture settings accordingly. This auto-switching of settings should ideally be the case with most TVs. The only time this happened when using the Mi Box was with Netflix. Watching shows like Altered Carbon, Daredevil or even the movie Extraction, the TV automatically released the image source as HDR and switched the settings accordingly. The content in HDR looks great and if you haven't seen the capabilities of the OLED TVs native app or the Fire TV Stick, 4K, you will be impressed. The colour pop, highlights are beautiful and even the dark scenes retain good detail. But like I said, “if you haven't seen the capabilities of the OLED TVs native app or the Fire TV Stick, 4K”. Because the performance of the same content through those devices is superior. However, as I said, the HDR performance on Netflix is good. But on YouTube and Prime Videos, it is bad.

To begin with, on YouTube and Prime Video, the TV did not auto change to the HDR settings. And manually changing them had different effects on both services. Let's start with YouTube. The Black Widow trailer in HDR and Blade Runner 2049 trailer in HDR were our go-to clips as they consist of bright colours, fast-paced action and both trailers look downright gorgeous. When playing both the trailers through the TVs native app or the Fire TV stick 4K,  the settings changed to HDR but on the Mi Box 4K it didn't and we got slightly paler colours without the pop. Switching the settings of the TV to HDR did help but there was a noticeable difference when compared to the output of the Fire TV Stick. Most viewers may not notice the difference but if looked at side by side, the difference is noticeable.

Prime Video was by far the worst experience. Look at the photos of Jack Ryan below. One is on the Fire TV Stick 4K, the other on the Mi Box 4K. Not only does the content on Prime Videos look dark, but it also loses some key details as well. Changing the settings to HDR on the TV didn’t help either. Even in a show like the Grand Tour season 1 Episode 1, that's bright and vivid, the colours look slightly washed out and the sand looks whiter than it should when all the cars are racing in the desert in the opening minutes of the episode. I asked Xiaomi about the poor performance of Prime Videos in HDR on the device, and they said it could be a problem with the app, so here’s hoping it gets fixed soon via an update.

Mi Box 4K - Apps and UI

Coming to the Apps and the UI, it is exactly the same we have seen on so many Android TVs. You have access to the Google Play Store so the library of apps is huge. Customizing the home screen with your favourite apps and services is easy and the navigation is fast and fluid. There are 2 things I absolutely liked about the UI - Volume controls and data saver.

The Mi Box 4K runs on the Android TV UI.

See, I did not enable CEC when I set up the Mi Box and when I got a phone call, I realized the soundbar remote was far away from me. So when I pressed the volume down on the remote the volume was reduced from the box itself. This is great as on devices like the Fire TV stick, the volume controls are CEC enabled. It's a small feature but a useful one. The other one is the data saver which lets you connect to a mobile hotspot, consumes less data and gives you a warning when you are reaching your preset data limit.

Data saver on the Mi Box 4K is great when using mobile hotspot to connect to the internet.

Mi Box 4K - Content From Hard Drive

Since the Mi Box has a USB port you can easily connect a hard drive to it to consume content. I have a 1TB hard drive with files in MP4 format coded in h.264 and h.265 and both ran very well. A lot of these files are family videos in 4K shot from an iPhone and they ran butter smooth. Although it must be noted that the initial loading of the library in apps like VLC took some time. Safe to say, you can play your favourite files from this device.

Google Assistant can be brought up to search for content

Mi Box 4K - Audio Performance

Coming to the Audio, the Mi Box supports 3.5mm in addition to Bluetooth. We connected the device to the TV via HDMI and connected it to the soundbar via ARC and for the most part the audio from all streaming services was crisp, clear with good channel separation. Since the soundbar is a 2.1 setup, the 5.1 was downmixed and handled quite well. no complaints here.

Mi Box 4K - Some Consistent Problems

The 5GHz connection keeps dropping and there are times when it refuses to connect to it. I literally disconnected every other device from the 5GHz band, reset the Mi Box, prayed to the tech gods, but to no avail. It's just a matter of chance. Sometimes it connects and is stable. At other times, it refuses to connect. And this is when devices like the TV, Xbox One X, and Fire TV Stick are all in the same place and connecting to 5GHz without any issue. The problem is that on the 2.4GHz band, content does not pick up to 4K all the time and when it does, it takes a couple of minutes more than it would otherwise.

Mi Box 4K 5GHz bandhwidth problem.

Bottom line

It is hard to recommend the Mi Box 4K as a go-to device if you have an HDR-enabled TV. But for a 1080p TV or SDR content, it works. But the fact is, so does the Fire TV Stick. The Fire TV Stick 1080p is a mere Rs 500 more expensive than the Mi Box 4K whereas the 4K Fire TV Stick is priced at Rs 6000 making it Rs 2500 more expensive than the Mi Box. There is also the fact that the Mi Box has a plug and play solution for content from an external USB device along with the convenience of Android. So here is your buying decision. If you have a 1080p TV, you can consider this device as it works well, albeit with some niggles. It will even get the job done for a 4K SDR TV. But the performance problem with HDR in Prime Video holds it back from becoming a great streaming device.
