England face Australia in Manchester on Wednesday in the 3rd ODI
England won the second ODI by 24 runs on Sunday
Australia are hoping to have Steve Smith back for the series decider
England will aim to end an extraordinary season overshadowed by the coronavirus pandemic with a win against Australia as their arch-rivals wait on the fitness of Steve Smith. Victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday would see 50-over world champions England take the three-match one-day international campaign 2-1. It would also mean they had not lost a series in any format across 18 matches this summer. All those fixtures have been played behind closed doors, with England players holed up in bio-secure bubbles in Manchester and Southampton for the best part of three months.
"When you play Australia you always want to win and there is always enough on the line, but it would be really good for us to finish this summer on a high," said England new-ball bowler Chris Woakes, who acknowledged bubble life has had its "tough times".
Australia will hope to have Smith available. The star batsman missed the first two ODIS after being hit on the head during practice last Thursday.
Team management have repeatedly said Smith, felled by a 92 mph bouncer from England fast bowler Jofra Archer during last year's drawn Ashes Test at Lord's, has been rested as a precaution despite passing two concussion tests.
- 'Tracking in the right direction' -
Australia coach Justin Langer, speaking before Smith batted in the nets on Tuesday, said: "He's definitely tracking in the right direction so we're hopeful he'll be right for tomorrow (Wednesday)."
Marcus Stoinis is in line to drop out but Woakes, while wary of the "world-class" Smith, said: "It can be tricky coming in with not much cricket under your belt and having to perform from ball one in a decider."
Australia were poised to win the series without former captain Smith on Sunday. But from 144-2, chasing 232 for victory, their last eight wickets fell for 63 runs in a dramatic collapse.
Defeat meant Australia had squandered winning positions in all three formats against England in just over a year, starting with a remarkable one-wicket loss in an Ashes Test at Headingley before they threw away the opening Twenty20 match of the current tour.
But Langer insisted: "I don't think there's a mental fragility there."
Woakes said the fightback was an indication of England's resolve under captain Eoin Morgan.
"We have that character and belief that we can win from any position," Woakes said. "A few years ago we probably felt we could only win from that position with the bat, whereas now we can do it with the ball as well."
Meanwhile Langer's faith in David Warner was intact despite the Australia opener having been dismissed four times in a row by Archer and managing just 12 runs in his last three innings.
"Jofra Archer is an incredibly talented bowler but, equally, David Warner: what a player," said Langer, himself a former Australia opener.
"When he gets in he scores hundreds in ODI cricket...He is working overtime to be up for the game."
England are looking to preserve an unbeaten run in home ODI series dating back to a defeat by Australia in 2015.

LONDON: Bournemouth beat Crystal Palace 11-10 in an unusually long penalty shootout to advance to the third round of the English League Cup after the game ended at 0-0 after 90 minutes on Tuesday.
As the sides remained deadlocked after five penalties each, even both goalkeepers had to take spot kicks and they both missed.
Eventually David Brooks scored his second penalty for Bournemouth and Luka Milivojevics second was saved by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to knock out the Premier League side.
Bournemouth, which was relegated from the Premier League in July, plays Manchester City in the next round.
GREALISH DELIGHT
Jack Grealish celebrated his new contract at Aston Villa by scoring the decisive goal in a 3-1 victory over Burton.
The match looked to be heading for a penalty shootout after Ollie Watkins had scored Villas equalizer late in the first half to cancel out Colin Daniels opener for the third-division team after only 68 seconds.
But Grealish struck a volley from the edge of the area to put Dean Smiths team in front in the 88th minute.
Keinan Davis made sure of the victory in stoppage time to set up a trip to Bristol City or Northampton in the next round.
HALLER DOUBLE
Sebastien Haller scored twice in four first-half minutes before Felipe Anderson added a late third as West Ham advanced past Charlton 3-0.
The win may only temporarily paper over the cracks after West Hams poor start to the season a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle on Saturday as well as unrest off the field.
DEBUT GOAL
Ryan Fraser secured Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Blackburn by scoring on his first appearance for the northeast club, which will play fourth-tier side Morecambe in the third round.

An Australian bookstore has banned the Harry Potter series to make the shop a 'safer space'.
Rabble Books and Games, in Maylands, Perth, announced on Wednesday it would cease stocking JK Rowling novels after she was accused of transphobia over her latest book.
Owner Nat Latter said on Facebook the store would 'not put books by transphobes on the shelves' and asked customers for suggested alternatives.

'Whilst stocking a book isn't an endorsement (good grief, that would be a minefield), and we will always take orders for books that aren't in stock, there are more worthy books to put on the shelf, books that don't harm communities and won't make us sad to unpack them,' she wrote.
'We are always trying to make Rabble a safer space for our community, and part of that is trying not to put books by transphobes on the shelves, when we know about them.'
Rowling has been criticised for her views on transgender people since tweeting her support for a researcher who was sacked for her own views on the topic.
In June the bestselling author made headlines again after she mocked an online article on Twitter for using the words 'people who menstruate' instead of 'women'.
The 55-year-old was hit by what she described as 'relentless attacks' after writing: 'I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?'
Her remarks sparked backlash from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Eddie Redmayne, stars of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies.

Rowling became embroiled in another trans row on Sunday after an early review of the her latest novel, Troubled Blood, by The Telegraph revealed it featured a 'transvestite serial killer' who wore women's clothing while murdering his victims.
The review caused some social media users to label Troubled Blood as 'transphobic' and 'really painful' - and the backlash caused #RIPJKRowling to trend on Twitter.
Others said the book is not transphobic at all and over-eager detractors should read it before jumping to conclusions.
Mailonline columnist Piers Morgan added: 'The fact #RIPJKRowling is trending says all you need to know about the woke brigade - they're nastier and more viciously intolerant than anyone they preach about.'

Want To Go To A Restaurant To Eat? Check These Safety Measures Issued By CDC
COVID Safety Guidelines: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared some guiding principles for restaurant and bars. Here's what you should know if you are eating out.
Edited by Neha Grover | Updated: September 16, 2020 18:49 IST
Keep these safety measures in mind while dining out.
Highlights
Many restaurants and bars have opened around us.
CDC issues some guidelines for restaurants to ensure safety.
Here are some safety tips you should know while dining out.
After spending months quarantined at home, most of us want to venture out now and lead normal lives. Dining out is one of the things that we missed most during lockdown and some of us even did it as soon as the restaurants opened. We can't really say how safe or unsafe it is, but if you are planning to visit a restaurant soon, it won't hurt knowing some safety guidelines proposed by a recognised body.
Restaurants should take all safety precautions in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic.
CDC also shared some safety considerations for ways in which operators can protect employees, customers, and communities and slow the spread of COVID-19. The risk of COVID-19 spread increases in a restaurant or bar setting as follows:
Lowest Risk: Food service limited to drive-through, delivery, take-out, and curb-side pick-up.
More Risk: Drive-through, delivery, take-out, and curb-side pick-up was emphasised as a bit risky. On-site dining limited to outdoor seating. Seating capacity reduced to allow tables to be spaced at least six feet apart.
Even More Risk: On-site dining with both indoor and outdoor seating. Seating capacity reduced to allow tables to be spaced at least six feet apart.
Highest Risk: On-site dining with both indoor and outdoor seating. Seating capacity not reduced and tables not spaced at least six feet apart.
It has been made clear that COVID-19 is mostly spread by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. The virus may spread to hands from a contaminated surface too. Considering all this, always wear a mask, clean hands with sanitiser after touching surfaces and before eating, and follow social distancing.
The current Mercedes-Benz C-Class only underwent its mid-cycle update for 2019 but prototypes for the next-generation model have been testing for a while.
Our latest spy shots and video show some of the more advanced prototypes for the new C-Class which we expect on the market in 2021 as a 2022 model. Prototypes for the C-Class wagon destined for overseas markets are also testing.
The testers are heavily camouflaged but the size and proportions appear similar to those of the current C-Class. The front looks to sit lower however, which lends the redesigned model a sportier stance, and there are clear influences from the redesigned 2021 S-Class, particularly for the headlights.
The interior design will be a lot more radical, with a large infotainment screen similar to the one in the S-Class positioned in the center stack and another screen serving as the instrument cluster. You'll notice that the updated 2019 C-Class missed out on Mercedes' latest infotainment system known as MBUX, but the latest version of the system will appear on the new C-Class. It operates much like a smartphone's operating system and also uses natural speech to control many vehicle functions.
Underpinning the new C-Class is an updated version of the current generation's MRA rear-wheel-drive platform. The platform actually made its debut in the current C-Class and is thus relatively young.
The updated version will bring significant weight savings primarily through increased use of aluminum over steel. This has been made possible due to advanced joining technologies including aluminum to steel welding.

In the powertrain department, look for the base model to stick with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, this time augmented with a mild-hybrid system. Above this is likely to be a plug-in hybrid system and then a C53 from AMG with a mild-hybrid powertrain. At the top of the range will be AMG's C63 which we hear will receive the hybrid treatment as well, and possibly a 4-cylinder engine in lieu of the current C63's V-8.
An electric sedan roughly the size of the C-Class but with interior space on par with the E-Class is also coming. This will be a standalone model sitting in Daimler's EQ sub-brand for electric cars and targeting the Tesla Model 3 and upcoming BMW i4.
One final change with the new C-Class worth mentioning is production. Mercedes currently builds the C-Class for North America at its plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This won't be the case for the next C-Class, though from which plant it will be sourced for local sale hasn't been announced.
