Trump was defensive but resisted agitation as he was pressed on his administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and why he doesn't more aggressively promote the use of masks to reduce the spread of the disease.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 11:19 AM IST

Fielding compelling questions about voters’ real-world problems, President Donald Trump denied during a televised town hall that he had played down the threat of the coronavirus earlier this year, although there is an audio recording of him stating he did just that.

Trump, in what could well be a preview of his performance in the presidential debates less than two weeks away, cast doubt on the widely accepted scientific conclusions of his own administration strongly urging the use of face coverings and seemed to bat away the suggestion that the nation has racial inequities.

“Well, I hope there’s not a race problem,” Trump said Tuesday when asked about his campaign rhetoric seeming to ignore the historical injustices carried out against Black Americans.

Face-to-face with everyday voters for the first time in months, Trump was defensive but resisted agitation as he was pressed on his administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and why he doesn't more aggressively promote the use of masks to reduce the spread of the disease.

“There are people that don’t think masks are good,” Trump said, though his own Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly urges their use.

The event, hosted by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, was a warmup of sorts before Trump faces Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the first presidential debate on Sept. 29. Taped at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, it featured Trump taking questions from an audience of just 21 voters to comply with state and local coronavirus regulations.

Trump sought to counter his admission to journalist Bob Woodward that he was deliberately “playing it down” when discussing the threat of COVID-19 to Americans earlier this year. Despite audio of his comments being released, Trump said: “Yeah, well, I didn’t downplay it. I actually, in many ways, I up-played it, in terms of action."

“My action was very strong,” Trump added. “I’m not looking to be dishonest. I don’t want people to panic.”

Trump also insisted he was not wrong when he praised China's response to the virus in January and February, saying he trusted Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader. “He told me that it was under control, that everything was and it turned out to be not true,” Trump said,

Trump also suggested the virus would disappear without a vaccine, claiming the nation would develop a herd immunity with time, but he didn't mention the lives that would be lost along the way.

“It’s going to be herd-developed, and that’s going to happen. That will all happen,” Trump said. "But with a vaccine, I think it will go away very quickly."

The questions from uncommitted voters were pointed and poignant: a diabetic man who said he felt he’d been thrown “under the bus” by mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic; a Black woman with a disease that left her uninsurable until the Obama health care law came along who is worried that she could lose coverage again; a Black pastor who questioned Trump’s campaign motto to “Make America Great Again.”

“When has America been great for African Americans in the ghetto of America?” the pastor asked.

Asked about what he was doing to address protests against racial injustice, Trump lamented a “lack of respect” and the absence of “retribution” for those who clash with or carry out attacks against police officers. Trump on Sunday called for the death penalty for the individual who shot and critically injured two Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies over the weekend.

Trump has been unusually mum on his debate preparations ahead of the first debate, set to take place in Cleveland. On Tuesday, he told Fox News that he believes his day job is the best practice for his three scheduled showdowns with Biden.

“Well, I sort of prepare every day by just doing what I’m doing,” Trump said. He noted that he had been in California on Monday and had been to other states before that to make the point that he’s getting out and about more than Biden.

One person likely to study the replay: Biden. Returning from a long day of campaigning in Florida, Biden said at his plane that he was preparing for the debates mostly by going back through what Trump has said in the past. But he suggested he had yet to initiate mock debates, saying he was unaware who would play the role of Trump in his preparations.

Trump, in the Fox interview, lowered expectations for his Democratic opponent's performance, judging Biden “a disaster” and “grossly incompetent” in the primary debates. He assessed Biden as “OK” and “fine” in his final one-on-one debate with Bernie Sanders before clinching the nomination.

Trump's rhetoric on Biden marked a departure from the traditional efforts by candidates to talk up their rivals' preparation for televised debates, in hopes of setting an unattainably high bar for their performance.

The second of the three scheduled debates, set to be held in Miami on Oct. 15, will feature a similar “town meeting” style.

Biden is to have his own opportunity to hone his skills taking questions from voters on Thursday, when he participates in a televised town hall hosted by CNN.

The visit to Pennsylvania is Trump’s second to the battleground state in the last week, after he attended a Sept. 11 memorial event in Shanksville on Friday.

National Education Policy Backward Looking Document: Mallikarjun Kharge In Rajya Sabha

"National Education Policy Backward Looking Document": Mallikarjun Kharge

The NEP-2020 is the first education policy of the 21st century, which was announced 34 years after the previous National Policy on Education in 1986.

'National Education Policy Backward Looking Document': Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi:

Terming the new National Education Policy as a "backward looking document", senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday that education should be based on principles of the Constitution and not on ancient cultural values.

Raising the issue as a Zero Hour mention in Rajya Sabha, Mr Kharge, who was recently elected to the upper house, said the entire NEP is a "backward looking document" that is looking 2000 years back instead of planning and preparing our children for the future.

"Therefore the values of moral education in schools and higher education should be based on the principles of the Constitution and not on ancient cultural values," he added.

The NEP-2020 is the first education policy of the 21st century, which was announced 34 years after the previous National Policy on Education in 1986. The NEP-2020 is directed towards major reforms at both the school and higher education level, the government has said

Mr Kharge noted that a provision in the Constitution states that in state and state-aided institutions there should be no religious instructions.

According to Article 28 (1), no religious instructions shall be provided in any educational institutions wholly maintained out of the state fund, he said.

In cities, Mr Kharge said, children who have access to quality nursery education learn to read and write by the time they join class 1.

However, he said poor children in towns and villages will be at a disadvantage because there is no proper policy defined for training of Aanganwadi teachers. Poor children will start with a disadvantage of not having learnt for three years before joining class 1.

"Nearly 50 per cent of students drop out after Class 10. There is no plan that has been suggested to reduce this drop outs. It is estimated that 32.4 per cent of these student drop outs are Dalits, 25.7 per cent minorities and 16.4 per cent are tribals," Mr Kharge said.

Teachers are already burdened with several duties like elections, census and vaccinations etc. which makes it difficult for them to concentrate on teaching and it is impossible to improve the quality of education, the Congress leader said.

Mr Kharge said the focus should be on mathematics, science and english for providing opportunity of development to rural and backward areas.

"Indian culture will be learnt by students through their language and literature classes. Such kind of activism to promote a single culture of Sanskrit or Hindi by the government will only keep children from backward areas out of modern education," he said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa and SAD member Balwinder Singh Bhunder demanded that Punjabi language should be included in the list of official languages in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Last week, the Union Cabinet approved a bill under which Kashmiri, Dogri and Hindi, apart from the existing Urdu and English, will be the official languages in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

In special mentions, Rajmani Patel demanded establishment of a commonwealth sport centre at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, while Rakesh Sinha (BJP nominated) sought compulsory disaster management training in schools and colleges.

Amar Patnaik of the BJD wanted formulation of a central sector scheme for the community of weavers.

Divorcee mother who unwittingly dated a paedophile child-killer returns home from work to find her daughters aged 13 and eight knifed to death

  • Valentina Saprunova, 40, began speaking online with Vitaly Molchanov, 41
  • She uprooted her family to move to the city of Rybinsk with him a month ago
  • She returned home Tuesday to find both daughters 'literally shredded' by a knife
  • Molchanov had prior convictions for child rape and murder and was released from a long prison sentence in 2010

A divorcee mother who unwittingly dated a man who had prior convictions for child rape and murder returned home from work yesterday to find both her daughters knifed to death.

Police in Russia have launched a major manhunt for Vitaly Molchanov, 41, who went on the run after the killings of Yana and Elena Saprunova, aged 13 and eight.

One month ago divorcee mother Valentina Saprunova, 40, uprooted 1,600 miles with her daughters from her Siberian home to move into her new boyfriend's flat, convinced she had found true love.

She took a job at a local hospital in Rybinsk, Yaroslavl region.

She came home from work on Tuesday to find both girls 'literally shredded' by a knife.

Her lover was seen fleeing from the scene on a white bicycle.

The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into a double child murder 'committed with extreme cruelty'.

The nurse had met Molchanov online via a dating app around six months ago, say Russian reports citing law enforcement.

In one posting in April, before they were together, he wrote: 'This is my girlfriend, this is very sad that we are in different cities, but I love her and we can solve all the other issues.'

But she was unaware of his past convictions for child rape and murder.

He had been released from prison in 2010 after serving a long sentence, say reports.

REN TV stated: 'Perhaps this tragedy would not have happened if Valentina, before going to live with this man with whom she had only talked on the Internet, knew an important thing: he had already served a sentence for … the rape and murder of a child.

Investigators can be seen working at the scene of the crime. Local media reported that Molchanov managed to keep his past convictions secret from Saprunova

'But Vitaly hid it from her.'

Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported: 'Vitaly carefully concealed his criminal past from his girlfriend.

'Otherwise, this woman, knowing the crimes for which her lover was sentenced, would in all probability not agree to uproot from the Omsk region to Rybinsk and with her two children to move in with him.'

Sources said that Molchanov had become angered and 'jealous' that her job involved 24 hour shifts from which she often came back late.

A neighbour said: 'This woman came to look for happiness in Rybinsk.

'I feel so sorry for her and the girls. He is a beast.

'He must be destroyed immediately.'

A meme posted in April by Molchanov, who works as an electrical cable crimper, appeared to predict the horror.

It read: 'After a murder, police first of all check if the victim's spouse can be involved. And this is basically everything you need to know about this marriage.'

The man's neighbours also did not know about his earlier convictions.

The committee said: 'The most experienced investigators and criminologists from the Investigation Department are working at the scene.'

The region's most senior investigator was put in charge of the case.

A law enforcement video showed forensic specialists working at the flat where the girls were killed.

Barbados says it will remove the Queen as head of state next year and 'fully leave our colonial past behind'

  • PM Mia Mottley said Barbados would be a republic by November 2021
  • 'Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State,' the LSE graduate said
  • Barbados has had a constitutional monarchy since its independence in 1966

Barbados has announced its intention to remove the Queen as its head of state and become a republic by November, 2021.

A speech written by Prime Minister Mia Mottley quoted the Caribbean island nation's first premier Errol Barrow's warning against 'loitering on colonial premises'.

Reading the speech, Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason said: 'The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind. Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State.

'This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving.

'Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence.'

The country gained its independence from Britain in 1966, though the Queen remains its constitutional monarch.

In 1998, a Barbados constitutional review commission recommended republican status, and in 2015 Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said 'we have to move from a monarchical system to a republican form of government in the very near future'.

Most Caribbean countries have kept formal links with the monarchy after achieving independence.

Barbados would join Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Guyana if it proceeds with its plan to become a republic.

Jamaica has also flagged such a transition, with Prime Minister Andrew Holness saying it is a priority of his government, but has yet to achieve it.

Barbados took another step towards independence from the UK in 2003 when it replaced the London-based Judicial Committee of the Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice, located in Trinidad and Tobago's Port of Spain, as its final appeals court.

Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur promoted the idea of a referendum on becoming a republic in 2005, however the vote was called off due to concerns raised by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Barbados: The country's colonial history

The Sugar Revolution, the introduction of sugar cane from Dutch Brazil, in the 1640s was highly lucrative but came at great social cost

Barbados was one of the oldest English settlements in the West Indies, being surpassed only by Saint Kitts.

The country's historical ties date back to the 17th century and involve settlement, post-colonialism and modern bilateral relations.

Since Barbados gained its independence in 1966, the nations have continued to share ties through the Commonwealth, with the Queen as Monarch.

In 1627, 80 Englishmen aboard the William and John landed on the Caribbean island and founded Jamestown (close to today’s Holetown), in the name of King James I.

The early settlers struggled to develop a profitable export crop and faced difficulties in maintaining supplies from Europe.

However, the Sugar Revolution, the introduction of sugar cane from Dutch Brazil, in the 1640s was highly lucrative and over the next decade more than two thirds of English emigres to the Americas went to Barbados.

But while this shift to sugar yielded huge profits, it came at a great social cost. Thousands of West African slaves were shipped across the Atlantic to work the plantations.

The sale of sugar, or white gold as the colonists called it, reaped huge profits because it was a scarce commodity in European markets.

Sugar continued as an integral part of the country's economy into the 19th century, while workers suffered from low wages and minimal social services.

Barbados became independent on November 30, 1966, during a time when the country's economy was expanding and diversifying.

In 2008, British exports to Barbados stood at £38.0 million, making it Britain's fourth-largest export market in the region.

In recent years a growing number of British nationals have been relocating to Barbados to live, with polls showing that British nationals make up 75–85 per cent of the Barbados second home market.

Plantronics BackBeat FIT 305 detailed review

Due to the evolution of user behaviour and demands, a particular informal sub-category of earphones has made its presence increasingly felt in recent times. That category is of wireless sports earphones, designed and built to cater to a gym-going, fitness enthusiast audience that prioritises features like a good build, ruggedness, noise isolation over fidelity. The BackBeat FIT 305 is meant for that exact demographic through and through. How well does it satisfy its requirements? Let’s find out.

Design and Build

As always, this is where sports headphones have to truly shine. We’re not saying that audio doesn’t matter for them, however, if the build doesn’t suit active usage, they’re likely to be rejected right out of the box. It’s safe to say that the BackBeat FIT 305 is unlikely to suffer this fate due to its sports-oriented design and build.

The design is IPX5 rated and features P2i coating so you’re safe against sweat damage, rain and spills. The cable is a nylon braided piece, with reflective material weaved into it, making it easily identifiable at night. Due to the nature of the fabric, it also doesn’t cause as much friction against the skin as a rubber coating. We’re not entirely sure if it is due to the coating, but the earbuds on the FIT 305 are highly prone to attracting dust.

The control module is located a couple of inches below the right earbud, which felt like the perfect place for it to be except for when you start running. Make sure to use the included clip to keep the 305 in place. The only complaint with the module is that the buttons, despite the particular + and - shapes, are a bit hard to detect by touch alone. Perhaps raised platforms for all three buttons would have been a better choice.

Plantronics has made a weird choice on the 305 by making the buds themselves have integrated silicon ear tips and wings. While they’re quite robust, if you have the tendency to wear your earbuds out frequently, this could be an issue as it won’t be easy to replace it with similar buds for the 305. Additionally, due to the same reason, you do not have the option of not using the wings. Another problem with the FIT 305’s build is that residual noise from the wire brushing up against anything is carried straight to the ear. While it isn’t too apparent during music playback, it’s a bit too loud for us during other times.

The added clip is handy and essential during workouts if you wish to ignore the presence of the cable and the control module around your neck. While passive isolation isn’t great, it is not half bad either. Just make sure you get the right earbuds for your fit. We blame the odd design of the earbud sleeves. Also, don’t expect these to blend well in a work environment - these are evidently workout headphones with bright colours meant for the gym and the jogging tracks.

Performance

In the audio performance department, the BackBeat FIT 305 ticks certain unintentional boxes. In any sports-oriented headphones, the lows are expected to be the most formidable aspect of the sound signature. However, the FIT 305 doesn’t handle those well. The bass sounds muddy and flat, which is especially evident when you push the volume to higher levels. Listening to Uptown Funk from Bruno Mars, the ‘duh-doh’ loop in the background sounded too recessed.

The mids are handled quite well, which benefits vocals and hands-free performance. Adele’s vocals in Hello sounds powerful and clear. The metal instrument density of Selkies by Between the Buried and Me doesn’t cause the 305 any trouble either. Even in noisy environments like a public bus, the FIT 305 managed to block out most external sound during our experience.

Call quality on the FIT 305 is great, and you have the wideband-enabled mic to thank for that. In our usage, after a full charge of approximately 90 minutes, the headphones lasted a bit north of 7 hours, which is quite good considering that they weight a measly 14grams. We did not expect any disconnection even at 50 feet, so you’re well provided for in the range department as well.

Verdict

Wireless earphones aimed at the gym are a dime a dozen today. However, in that pile, to find something that hits the right balance of features, pricing, build quality and audio performance is also quite a task. No, the BackBeat FIT 305 doesn’t hit that balance, but it comes significantly close to doing so. If only its audio performance could match up to some of its more capable brethren, it would be a no brainer to recommend the FIT 305, thanks to its already great build quality and gym-friendly design. However, if that isn’t a big issue for you, the FIT 305 does actually provide great overall performance and at the current price of Rs. 3999/- online, is not a bad deal at all.

As per an order dated September 9, the Public Health Department of Maharashtra had discontinued oxygen supply to other states including Madhya Pradesh following which the state-run MY Hospital approached the court.

Responding to a writ petition, the Indore bench of High Court on Wednesday directed the Maharashtra government to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply to Madhya Pradesh.

As per an order dated September 9, the Public Health Department of Maharashtra had discontinued oxygen supply to other states including Madhya Pradesh following which the state-run MY Hospital approached the court.

The Advocate General Purushendra Kaurav on behalf of the state government informed the court that there cannot be any discrimination with Covid-19 patients of one state with those from the other. On the basis of this, the divisional bench of the Madhya Pradesh HC ordered the Maharashtra government to ensure an uninterrupted supply of oxygen to the state.

Last Wednesday, the Principal Secretary Health of Maharashtra, Pradeep Kumar Vyas had issued an order saying the oxygen produced in Maharashtra will be used for the state only.

Reacting to it, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called up his counterpart from Maharashtra and later told the media that Thackeray has assured him to look into the matter. We will be bridging the shortfall with the help from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, Chouhan had said that the state will ensure that oxygen supply increases to 150 tonnes by month-end.

The state government had also asked to produce oxygen from the existing 50-60% to 70-80% capacity to meet the growing demand amid surging cases of Covid-19 in the state.

Lenovo Z2 Plus 64GB detailed review

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is undoubtedly one of the most powerful mobile processors out there today. This SoC had already shown its prowess in the LG G5, HTC 10, OnePlus 3, Xiaomi Mi 5, LeEco Le Max 2, and basically every flagship phone available today. However, no one expected it on a sub-20k smartphone, but here we are with the Lenovo Z2 Plus.

It starts at a mere Rs. 18,000, and just the presence of the Snapdragon 820 makes it seem like a bargain. But is it? Let’s break it down.

Build and Design
The Lenovo Z2 Plus has a generic design, but with the metal and glass treatment. The candy-bar design works, but it doesn’t really give the phone a personality of its own. You may still find it attractive, but I think a Moto X Play, with its plastic body looked more original.

That said, the design is definitely functional. It has a small footprint, making it really ergonomic. That being said, the fiberglass back is a fingerprint magnet and catches scratches very easily. Lenovo does provide a cover in the box, though.

The build quality is good, and not as prone to bumps as you think. I don’t like how slippery the body is, though the cover makes up for it. Overall, the Z2 Plus has a functional design, which many would like, and I wouldn’t question it given the price.

Display and UI
The phone sports a 5-inch IPS display. It is adequately bright and has good legibility in all lighting conditions. To make the screen more likeable and ward off fingerprints, the pre-installed matte screen protector does a fantastic job. Before you roll your eyes at the resolution, consider that the 1080p screen actually helps battery life, and looks good enough on the 5-inch panel. It has a maximum brightness of 547 Lux.

The Z2 Plus runs on a custom ROM called ZUI 2.0 by Lenovo. It is based on Android Marshmallow and is a very light and non-intrusive for the most part. The only menu, which you will be using often is an iOS-like control centre, which requires some getting used to. The appearance is mostly like the Google Launcher and the UI is quite smooth.

The most interesting part, however, is the implementation of the fingerprint scanner. It can jump directly to the home screen when the screen is off. It’s not as fast as Pixel Imprint, but still fast enough and quite accurate. You can also set the button for tasks, like swiping left to right for switching apps, double tapping for camera or Google voice etc. Further, It's totally up to you whether you want to use a single button for Android navigation or opt for the on-screen keys. The UI is created in this way so you never have to reach for the top of the screen.

Performance: The new sub-20K champ
No other phone, except the now discounted LeEco Le Max2 comes even lose to the Lenovo Z2 Plus in terms of specs. The phone is an absolute beast where performance is concerned and kills the competition by a large margin. Even the similarly specced Le Max 2 is a little slower compared to this phone.

The lower 1080p resolution keeps performance to its optimum and even with demanding games on the screen, the temperatures never went above 40 degree celcius. However, the performance of this device is weak compared to the OnePlus 3, but then again, the OnePlus 3 costs Rs. 8,000 more than the Z2 Plus. Still, the performance of the Z2 Plus is quite smooth, no matter what you throw at it. Heavy gaming titles such as Need for Speed no limits, Hitman Sniper or Vainglory don't seem to slow down the phone either and I was able to switch between the three with utmost ease.

Call quality and reception on the phone is quite good as well. Even in areas where the connection was spotty, I never encountered a call drop. The bottom mounted single speaker is loud, but the audio does distort at higher volumes. Audio quality via the headphones on the other hand is quite crisp and clear.

Battery: A day’s worth
A small display with 1080p resolution and a large battery means good battery life, and that is exactly the case here. The 3500mAh battery on the Z2 Plus easily lasted me a work day, during the test period. On a full charge, the phone runs for about 7 to 7.5 hours on the PC Mark battery test. As on every phone, gaming depletes battery life, but even with an hour of gaming every day the Z2 Plus can withstand a full work day's worth of usage.

Camera: Could have been better
The only thing missing from the phone is a good camera. Don't get me wrong, this 13MP rear camera on the Z2 Plus is not bad. In fact,  it is actually one of the top ten cameras in its category, but it is not its best suit. Images taken in normal lighting conditions have good colour reproduction and respectable dynamic range. However, as soon as the light starts to go dim, the images tend to show more noise.

The HDR mode does help but it takes a second or two to capture the image properly and a very steady hand. The camera also lets you shoot videos in 4K, but the lack of OIS (optical image stabilisation) and a slower autofocus during videos add up to a sub-optimal experience. On the other hand, the front facing camera is quite good and takes decent selfies even in low light.

Images taken from Lenovo Z2 Plus

Bottomline: Buy it!
The Lenovo Z2 Plus is hands down the best smartphone to buy under Rs. 20,000. It performs well, features a good display, has a functional design and a day’s worth of battery life. The only area where it lags behind is the camera performance, but all things considered, it is still recommendable. All in all, if you are investing on a 20k phone, get the Lenovo Z2 Plus.

Snowflake IPO Raises $3.36 Billion in Year's Biggest US Listing

Snowflake IPO Raises $3.36 Billion in Year's Biggest US Listing

California-based Snowflake said it was aiming to sell 28 million shares at $100 to $110 per share

Highlights
  • Snowflake's IPO eclipses that of Royalty Pharma
  • Snowflake confidentially filed to go public earlier this year
  • Sequoia owned an 8.4 percent stake in the company before the offering

Snowflake said late on Tuesday that its initial public offering raised $3.36 billion (roughly Rs. 24,711 crores) after it was priced above the target range in the biggest US listing so far this year.

The IPO, which was priced at $120 (roughly Rs. 8,830) per share, values the cloud-based data warehouse firm at north of $30 billion (roughly Rs. 2,20,606 crores).

San Mateo, California-based Snowflake said on Monday it was aiming to sell 28 million shares at $100 (roughly Rs. 7,350) to $110 (rouhgly Rs. 8,090) per share after its expected pricing was raised from a range of $75 (roughly Rs. 5,520) to $85 (roughly Rs. 6,250) per share last week.

Snowflake's IPO eclipses that of Royalty Pharma, which so far was the biggest IPO of 2020, and underscores the recent rebound in the US market for new stocks after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted several companies to put IPO plans on hold.

Snowflake confidentially filed to go public earlier this year, shortly after its last funding in February that valued it at over $12 billion (roughly Rs. 88,246 crores). Venture capital firm Sequoia owned an 8.4 percent stake in the company before the offering.

Snowflake's revenue jumped 173.9 percent to $264.7 million (roughly Rs. 1,946 crores) for the full year ended January 31, though its net loss nearly doubled to $348.54 million (roughly Rs. 2,563 crores).

The company's shares are set to start trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday under the ticker "SNOW," and the offering is expected to close on September 18.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Allen & Co and Citigroup are the lead underwriters for the offering.

Verdict

The HIFIMAN TWS600 is a competent audiophile-grade true wireless pair of earphones that boast sonic accuracy and an uncommon A-shaped sound signature. It also features an alleged wireless range of 150m in an open space and over 38 hours of battery life along with the charging case. Although they aren’t the most aesthetic or premium-looking pair of earphones, the HIFIMAN TWS600 sports a snug fit inside the ear. They are comfortable to wear over extended periods of usage without feeling overly fatigued. Overall, these earphones are geared towards audiophiles, individuals who prefer a more bass-forward approach might be slightly disappointed with these.

BUY HIFIMAN TWS600

HIFIMAN TWS600 detailed review

HIFIMAN, a Chinese headphone and audio equipment manufacturer, cemented its status as a brand catering to audiophiles with products such as the HIFIMAN Sundara, and their flagship, Shangri-La, which is priced at a whopping Rs 35,99,900. Known for delivering some of the best planar magnetic tech in headphones, the company has garnered a fair bit of attention from audiophiles. While the company largely specialises in wired, high-end headphones, they have also begun testing the waters when it comes to wireless in-ears. The HIFIMAN TWS600 is a high fidelity true wireless offering from the company. These feature the company’s proprietary Topology Diaphragm drivers which promise sonic accuracy despite being wireless. Let’s see how they fared.

Build and design

Putting it mildly, the HIFIMAN TWS600 earphones have an odd design characteristic. While most manufacturers are attempting to make their true wireless offerings look sleek and streamlined, the HIFIMAN TWS600 looks excessively “bulge-y”. The charging case resembles an elongated egg, sports a metallic grey sheen and the HIFIMAN logo, while the earphones themselves are shaped like kidney beans with odd bulging protrusions.

The protrusion we mentioned actually leads to the earbuds’ angled nozzles. The purpose for the, frankly, ugly protrusion could be the way the patented Topology Diaphragm drivers are placed inside the earphones and their dimensions. However, this is just speculation. In addition to the bulge, the outer portion of the earphones houses the physical buttons. There are transparent patterns around the buttons which allow the LEDs inside the earbuds to shine through. There are also tiny HIFIMAN logos on the side of the earphones.

Coming back to the charging case, upon opening it, you will discover a battery indicator with four LEDs that relay the amount of battery life the case has remaining. The LED on the earphones also glows, quite brightly, when they are tucked within the case to signify that they’re charging. The case houses a USB Type-C charging port on the rear, towards the right side.

Design aside, the charging case refuses to open up using only one hand, at least for us. The best way to do it is by prying it apart using two thumbs, however, it still takes some force. It is relatively pocketable but will bulge out considerably if your pants are form-fitting.

The HIFIMAN TWS600 also comes with a USB Type-C charging cable and not 2 or 3, but 8 additional pairs of silicone tips including double-flanged, triple-flanged, wide-bore and more options. The result? The earphones fit inside most ears extremely securely and feel comfortable to wear even over extended periods of usage.

Unfortunately, the control buttons on these earphones were a major pain point for us. Literally, painful… Since the buttons are relatively small in size and quite hard to press, they cause the earbuds to dig further into your ear when you press them. We found that using multiple fingers to secure the earbud’s position and then pressing the button was slightly more comfortable.

You can control music playback (pause/play) and answer/reject calls by tapping the button on either side once. A double-tap on the right increases the volume while double-tapping the left decreases it. Triple taps help you seek tracks, with the right going forward a song while the left taking you to the previous one. Holding either button down for two seconds summons your phone’s voice assistant. Not really standard controls, but they work for the most part.

Overall, the HIFIMAN TWS600 is quite unusual-looking, especially the earphones themselves with the unsightly bulges. The comfort and fit, nevertheless, is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the comfortable fit was counteracted with some discomfort due to the physical controls and their tendency to make you push the earphones deep inside your ears.

Features

Source: HIFIMAN website

HIFIMAN claims that the TWS600 has an absurdly-long Bluetooth range of up to 490 feet (150m)! Sporting Bluetooth v5.0, the box, however, makes a more conservative claim of 10m - 50m (33 feet - 164 feet) Bluetooth range. On the website, HIFIMAN claims to have achieved the astounding 150m of Bluetooth range in an open field. While we couldn’t test the lofty claims of 150m (finding 490 feet of open area in Mumbai is a chore, guys), we did manage to achieve around 80 feet in a large parking area without any lags in the connection. However, put a few barriers between this and you’ll start to hear drops and skips.

Additionally, the HIFIMAN TWS600 also features a total battery life of 38.5 hours. According to the company, you get about 5.5 hours in the buds and 33 hours through the charging case. In our tests, the buds lasted about 6 hours with the volume at 40 per cent (these earphones are inordinately loud!) and the case lasted well over a week’s worth of usage as well, which is pretty impressive. The charging time is fairly brief as well, with the buds needing about an hour to charge fully, while the case charges up to full in 1.5 hours.

Despite being audiophile-grade earphones, the HIFIMAN TWS600 only supports SBC and AAC audio codecs. Unfortunately, there’s no aptX support. The company claims that the earphones are tuned in a manner to ensure low latency, and their claims were proven right in our tests. While watching content on YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video, there was a very negligible delay between the video and audio. It was almost unnoticeable.

The earphones sport an IPX4 dust and sweat resistant rating as well. So, they are well equipped to deal with light splashes and sweat when you’re exercising. However, it is not safe to go swimming with.

Performance

The sound signature of the HIFIMAN TWS600 is peculiar in comparison to most other competing products in the true wireless segment. It features an ‘A-shaped’ sound graph, with a higher emphasis on the mids and upper mids that makes the lows and highs sound recessed in comparison. However, the lows and bass response seems a tad more recessed than the highs.

The bass response on these earphones, while controlled and detailed, ends up sounding quite lethargic since it lacks drive. It takes a backseat to the mids and upper-mids. In the track Around the World by Kings of Leon, the shakers in the background sound listless since the mid-range guitar simply overpowers them.

The vocals are clear and well-articulated as seen in tracks such as Rescue Me by OneRepublic. Female vocals can sometimes have a bit of sibilance, but only if you push the volume past 50 per cent. The earphones get extremely loud, so it’s best to listen to these earphones at the 40 - 50 per cent volume range. The highs, while slightly overpowered by the impactful mids, sound sonically accurate. They also have a shine and brilliance to them all without sounding too fatiguing. Whether this is the result of HIFIMAN’s unique tuning or their Topology Diaphragm tech or both, we can’t judge.

HIFIMAN has done a great job making a mids and upper-mids focused sound signature sound almost flat. The detail retention across frequencies is extremely commendable. However, the bass could have been slightly boosted to make it energetic.

The soundstage is where these earphones blow past most of their competitors. It is ridiculously expansive, featuring impressive width, and even some height. The music fills inside your head and appears to extend beyond it, which is something you usually see in open-back headphones. Given that these are closed-back, in-ears, the soundstage is truly remarkable. The only other true wireless pair of earphones that comes close to this is the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless.

Imaging is excellent as well with each instrument being easily placeable in the soundscape and instrument separation is quite decent too, which instances of overlap being uncommon. Call quality is pretty decent. On both ends, the quality is manageable. In our microphone test, the live transcribing app was able to pick up most of the words we spoke accurately as well.

Overall, the HIFIMAN TWS600 true wireless earphones offer a largely atypical sound profile. However, it manages to retain details across frequencies. The bass lacks drive but still sounds very intricate and precise. In addition to maintaining clarity and detail across frequencies, it manages to sound pretty euphonic as well. Except for maybe the highs on loud volume levels which tends to sound a bit too bright.

Bottomline

300,000 Pounds Suspect Cash Seized From Indian-Origin Couple's UK Home

Crime prevention officials in UK recovered over 300,000 pounds in cash from an Indian-origin couple.

London:

Crime prevention officials and police in the UK have recovered over 300,000 pounds in cash suspected of being the proceeds of crime from an Indian-origin couple.

Searches of a house belonging to husband-wife Sailesh and Harkit Singara in Edgware, north west London, revealed a total of more than 200,000 pounds, with around half of the money neatly stacked on a bed. Another 100,000 pounds was discovered in a suitcase on the floor, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

"Some Money Service Businesses (MSBs) continue to pose a risk to the UK by facilitating the movement of illicit cash. The NECC and its partners have developed an increased understanding of this threat, which is enabling more effective action against suspicious MSBs while supporting legitimate businesses," said Rachael Herbert, Head of Threat Response at the NCA.

Nearby, officers found a further 100,000 pounds in a bag which was in the possession of Sailesh Mandalia, a business associate of Singara.

Believing the money to be the proceeds of crime, Metropolitan Police Organised Crime Partnership (OCP) investigators applied for a forfeiture order - a civil process in the UK intended to recover illicit cash where there has been no proven criminal offence.

In October 2019, the order was granted at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, along with instructions that the three respondents pay costs of a combined 1,895 pounds.

However, Mandalia and the Singaras had appealed against the forfeiture.

All the accused, who collectively own two money service businesses, asserted that the cash was intended for legitimate business accounts, and that poor accounting over several years was responsible for any confusion.

But on September 10, a judge at Southwark Crown Court dismissed their appeal, ensuring the full sum can be recovered by the NCA.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony O'Sullivan, Head of the Met Police OCP, said: "While the three individuals are not accused, and have not been convicted, of any crime in relation to these events, the 300,000 pounds recovered will now go into the public purse where it can positively impact on communities.

"Money is at the heart of organised crime, and it is vital that those in possession of huge sums of cash can account for it legitimately. We at the OCP continue to tackle the criminality that generates illicit cash in London and beyond," he said.

The court additionally instructed the three respondents to pay costs of a combined 4,350 pounds.
