Five of the world's rarest, most valuable diamonds found in SA

Struggling gem producer Petra Diamonds Ltd. found five blue stones, typically among the most valuable in the world, at its flagship mine in South Africa.

While the discovery will be a boost for the company that’s put itself up for sale after being dragged down by huge debts and a collapse in the diamond market, Petra cautioned that it alone won’t be enough to turn around its fortunes.

Petra said it found five Type IIb blue diamonds of high color and clarity at its Cullinan mine, ranging in size from 9.6 carats to 25.8 carats. It didn’t indicate their potential value and said it’s looking at the best way to sell them. Blue stones are among the rarest and most valuable and can fetch record prices. Last year, Petra sold a 20-carat blue gem for almost $15 million.

“These finds, whilst a positive development, will not have a material impact on the likely terms of the required long-term solution to improve the group’s capital structure, nor the significant level of equity dilution that existing shareholders are likely to experience in connection with its implementation,” Petra said Wednesday.

The shares were little changed by 11:30 a.m. in London, paring an earlier advance of as much as 13%. The stock is down 76% this year.

In June, Petra said it was seeking offers for the whole company, parts of the business or any of its assets as it seeks to pay down debts. The company is also talking with lenders and bondholders to try to improve its debt situation.

Petra, which has mines in South Africa and one in Tanzania, was already facing multiple problems with a mountain of debt and falling diamond prices before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the global trade in gems. The company has slid from a peak value of more than $1.5 billion as it redeveloped the Cullinan mine, where the world’s biggest diamond was found in 1905.

Mother who unwittingly dated a child-killer returns home to find her daughters knifed to death | Daily Mail Online

Divorcee mother who unwittingly dated a paedophile child-killer returns home from work to find her daughters aged 13 and eight knifed to death

  • Valentina Saprunova, 40, began speaking online with Vitaly Molchanov, 41
  • She uprooted her family to move to the city of Rybinsk with him a month ago
  • She returned home Tuesday to find both daughters 'literally shredded' by a knife
  • Molchanov had prior convictions for child rape and murder and was released from a long prison sentence in 2010

A divorcee mother who unwittingly dated a man who had prior convictions for child rape and murder returned home from work yesterday to find both her daughters knifed to death.

Police in Russia have launched a major manhunt for Vitaly Molchanov, 41, who went on the run after the killings of Yana and Elena Saprunova, aged 13 and eight.

One month ago divorcee mother Valentina Saprunova, 40, uprooted 1,600 miles with her daughters from her Siberian home to move into her new boyfriend's flat, convinced she had found true love.

She took a job at a local hospital in Rybinsk, Yaroslavl region.

She came home from work on Tuesday to find both girls 'literally shredded' by a knife.

Her lover was seen fleeing from the scene on a white bicycle.

The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into a double child murder 'committed with extreme cruelty'.

The nurse had met Molchanov online via a dating app around six months ago, say Russian reports citing law enforcement.

In one posting in April, before they were together, he wrote: 'This is my girlfriend, this is very sad that we are in different cities, but I love her and we can solve all the other issues.'

But she was unaware of his past convictions for child rape and murder.

He had been released from prison in 2010 after serving a long sentence, say reports.

REN TV stated: 'Perhaps this tragedy would not have happened if Valentina, before going to live with this man with whom she had only talked on the Internet, knew an important thing: he had already served a sentence for … the rape and murder of a child.

'But Vitaly hid it from her.'

Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported: 'Vitaly carefully concealed his criminal past from his girlfriend.

'Otherwise, this woman, knowing the crimes for which her lover was sentenced, would in all probability not agree to uproot from the Omsk region to Rybinsk and with her two children to move in with him.'

Sources said that Molchanov had become angered and 'jealous' that her job involved 24 hour shifts from which she often came back late.

A neighbour said: 'This woman came to look for happiness in Rybinsk.

'I feel so sorry for her and the girls. He is a beast.

'He must be destroyed immediately.'

A meme posted in April by Molchanov, who works as an electrical cable crimper, appeared to predict the horror.

It read: 'After a murder, police first of all check if the victim's spouse can be involved. And this is basically everything you need to know about this marriage.'

The man's neighbours also did not know about his earlier convictions.

The committee said: 'The most experienced investigators and criminologists from the Investigation Department are working at the scene.'

The region's most senior investigator was put in charge of the case.

A law enforcement video showed forensic specialists working at the flat where the girls were killed.

iOS 14 will bring a list of changes to your iPhone

Highlights
  • iOS 14 will be compatible with all iPhone models starting from iPhone 6s
  • The iOS update will carry App Library to remove clutter from home screen
  • iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 would reach your devices later today

iOS 14 release date is out and is set for September 17. CEO Tim Cook revealed the release date of iOS 14 at Apple's virtual event on Tuesday, where it brought the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, iPad 8, and the iPad Air 4 as its new hardware offerings. Apple unveiled iOS 14 as the next iteration in the iOS family at the virtually held WWDC 2020 in June. Alongside the latest iOS version, Apple is releasing iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 on September 17.

iOS 14 release date, time in India

Apple CEO Tim Cook at his virtual keynote on Monday said that iOS 14 release would take place on September 16 in the US. The Apple India website states that iOS 14 will release in India on September 17.

iOS 14 compatible iPhone models

The iOS 14 update will be available for download on all iPhone models that are in the compatibility list of iOS 13. This means that iOS 14 will be compatible with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the iPhone SE (2020). Apart from all these iPhone models, the iOS update will also be compatible with the seventh-generation iPod touch.

How to download iOS 14

You can download iOS 14 on your eligible iPhone or iPod touch once it has reached your device by going to Settings > General > Software Update. It will also automatically be downloaded if you have already chosen that option on your device. We suggest you to back up your personal data before beginning the download process. Moreover, your device should have an adequate amount of battery charge, or be plugged in and charging, to carry out the update.

iOS 14 features

As Apple announced at WWDC 2020, iOS 14 will be the “biggest update ever to Home Screen pages” and will bring a new space to organise apps into one view called the App Library. The iOS update will also carry redesigned widgets as well as a new interface for FaceTime, voice calls, and Siri interactions. Apple will also bring Picture-in-Picture support to your iPhone or iPod touch through iOS 14.

Further, iOS 14 will come with an upgraded Messages experience where you'll be able to pin any of your favourite conversations or get alerted on receiving messages in group threads through mentions and inline replies. Apple will also offer updates to preloaded Maps, Siri, and Safari apps.

The iOS 14 update was also slated to bring the ability to let you opt out of in-app tracking. However, Apple delayed that particular privacy-focussed feature after facing some backlash from developers including Facebook. The company said in a statement that the requirement to use the tracking permission would go into effect early next year.

iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, tvOS 14 release

In addition to the iOS 14 update, Apple is releasing iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 for all compatible devices later today. The new iPadOS will bring features such as redesigned sidebars, pull-down menus, and an enhanced search experience that works similar to macOS's Spotlight pop-up search bar.

For Apple Watch users, watchOS 7 brings customisable watch faces, activity rings for kids, various new complications, sleep tracking, and the ability to share watch faces. There is also a Family Setup to let you pair watches for your children and parents using your iPhone. Lastly, tvOS 14 brings Picture-in-Picture, multiuser support for gaming, and support for gaming controllers Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controllers.

Barbados says it will remove the Queen as head of state next year and 'fully leave our colonial past behind'

  • PM Mia Mottley said Barbados would be a republic by November 2021
  • 'Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State,' the LSE graduate said
  • Barbados has had a constitutional monarchy since its independence in 1966

Barbados has announced its intention to remove the Queen as its head of state and become a republic by November, 2021.

A speech written by Prime Minister Mia Mottley quoted the Caribbean island nation's first premier Errol Barrow's warning against 'loitering on colonial premises'.

Reading the speech, Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason said: 'The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind. Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State.

'This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving.

'Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence.'

The country gained its independence from Britain in 1966, though the Queen remains its constitutional monarch.

In 1998, a Barbados constitutional review commission recommended republican status, and in 2015 Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said 'we have to move from a monarchical system to a republican form of government in the very near future'.

Most Caribbean countries have kept formal links with the monarchy after achieving independence.

Barbados would join Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica and Guyana if it proceeds with its plan to become a republic.

Jamaica has also flagged such a transition, with Prime Minister Andrew Holness saying it is a priority of his government, but has yet to achieve it.

Barbados took another step towards independence from the UK in 2003 when it replaced the London-based Judicial Committee of the Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice, located in Trinidad and Tobago's Port of Spain, as its final appeals court.

Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur promoted the idea of a referendum on becoming a republic in 2005, however the vote was called off due to concerns raised by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Barbados: The country's colonial history

The Sugar Revolution, the introduction of sugar cane from Dutch Brazil, in the 1640s was highly lucrative but came at great social cost

The Sugar Revolution, the introduction of sugar cane from Dutch Brazil, in the 1640s was highly lucrative but came at great social cost

Barbados was one of the oldest English settlements in the West Indies, being surpassed only by Saint Kitts.

The country's historical ties date back to the 17th century and involve settlement, post-colonialism and modern bilateral relations.

Since Barbados gained its independence in 1966, the nations have continued to share ties through the Commonwealth, with the Queen as Monarch.

In 1627, 80 Englishmen aboard the William and John landed on the Caribbean island and founded Jamestown (close to today’s Holetown), in the name of King James I.

The early settlers struggled to develop a profitable export crop and faced difficulties in maintaining supplies from Europe.

However, the Sugar Revolution, the introduction of sugar cane from Dutch Brazil, in the 1640s was highly lucrative and over the next decade more than two thirds of English emigres to the Americas went to Barbados.

But while this shift to sugar yielded huge profits, it came at a great social cost. Thousands of West African slaves were shipped across the Atlantic to work the plantations.

The sale of sugar, or white gold as the colonists called it, reaped huge profits because it was a scarce commodity in European markets.

Sugar continued as an integral part of the country's economy into the 19th century, while workers suffered from low wages and minimal social services.

Barbados became independent on November 30, 1966, during a time when the country's economy was expanding and diversifying.

In 2008, British exports to Barbados stood at £38.0 million, making it Britain's fourth-largest export market in the region.

In recent years a growing number of British nationals have been relocating to Barbados to live, with polls showing that British nationals make up 75–85 per cent of the Barbados second home market.

Verdict

Catering to the ever-growing audience of sports enthusiasts, the BackBeat FIT 305 features a rugged build and design that is not too common at its price point. However, weak audio performance, and a couple of snags in the build area too, bring its overall appeal down.

Plantronics BackBeat FIT 305 detailed review

Due to the evolution of user behaviour and demands, a particular informal sub-category of earphones has made its presence increasingly felt in recent times. That category is of wireless sports earphones, designed and built to cater to a gym-going, fitness enthusiast audience that prioritises features like a good build, ruggedness, noise isolation over fidelity. The BackBeat FIT 305 is meant for that exact demographic through and through. How well does it satisfy its requirements? Let’s find out.

Design and Build

As always, this is where sports headphones have to truly shine. We’re not saying that audio doesn’t matter for them, however, if the build doesn’t suit active usage, they’re likely to be rejected right out of the box. It’s safe to say that the BackBeat FIT 305 is unlikely to suffer this fate due to its sports-oriented design and build.

The design is IPX5 rated and features P2i coating so you’re safe against sweat damage, rain and spills. The cable is a nylon braided piece, with reflective material weaved into it, making it easily identifiable at night. Due to the nature of the fabric, it also doesn’t cause as much friction against the skin as a rubber coating. We’re not entirely sure if it is due to the coating, but the earbuds on the FIT 305 are highly prone to attracting dust.

The control module is located a couple of inches below the right earbud, which felt like the perfect place for it to be except for when you start running. Make sure to use the included clip to keep the 305 in place. The only complaint with the module is that the buttons, despite the particular + and - shapes, are a bit hard to detect by touch alone. Perhaps raised platforms for all three buttons would have been a better choice.

Plantronics has made a weird choice on the 305 by making the buds themselves have integrated silicon ear tips and wings. While they’re quite robust, if you have the tendency to wear your earbuds out frequently, this could be an issue as it won’t be easy to replace it with similar buds for the 305. Additionally, due to the same reason, you do not have the option of not using the wings. Another problem with the FIT 305’s build is that residual noise from the wire brushing up against anything is carried straight to the ear. While it isn’t too apparent during music playback, it’s a bit too loud for us during other times.

The added clip is handy and essential during workouts if you wish to ignore the presence of the cable and the control module around your neck. While passive isolation isn’t great, it is not half bad either. Just make sure you get the right earbuds for your fit. We blame the odd design of the earbud sleeves. Also, don’t expect these to blend well in a work environment - these are evidently workout headphones with bright colours meant for the gym and the jogging tracks.

Performance

In the audio performance department, the BackBeat FIT 305 ticks certain unintentional boxes. In any sports-oriented headphones, the lows are expected to be the most formidable aspect of the sound signature. However, the FIT 305 doesn’t handle those well. The bass sounds muddy and flat, which is especially evident when you push the volume to higher levels. Listening to Uptown Funk from Bruno Mars, the ‘duh-doh’ loop in the background sounded too recessed.

The mids are handled quite well, which benefits vocals and hands-free performance. Adele’s vocals in Hello sounds powerful and clear. The metal instrument density of Selkies by Between the Buried and Me doesn’t cause the 305 any trouble either. Even in noisy environments like a public bus, the FIT 305 managed to block out most external sound during our experience.

Call quality on the FIT 305 is great, and you have the wideband-enabled mic to thank for that. In our usage, after a full charge of approximately 90 minutes, the headphones lasted a bit north of 7 hours, which is quite good considering that they weight a measly 14grams. We did not expect any disconnection even at 50 feet, so you’re well provided for in the range department as well.

Verdict

Wireless earphones aimed at the gym are a dime a dozen today. However, in that pile, to find something that hits the right balance of features, pricing, build quality and audio performance is also quite a task. No, the BackBeat FIT 305 doesn’t hit that balance, but it comes significantly close to doing so. If only its audio performance could match up to some of its more capable brethren, it would be a no brainer to recommend the FIT 305, thanks to its already great build quality and gym-friendly design. However, if that isn’t a big issue for you, the FIT 305 does actually provide great overall performance and at the current price of Rs. 3999/- online, is not a bad deal at all.

As per an order dated September 9, the Public Health Department of Maharashtra had discontinued oxygen supply to other states including Madhya Pradesh following which the state-run MY Hospital approached the court.

Responding to a writ petition, the Indore bench of High Court on Wednesday directed the Maharashtra government to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply to Madhya Pradesh.

As per an order dated September 9, the Public Health Department of Maharashtra had discontinued oxygen supply to other states including Madhya Pradesh following which the state-run MY Hospital approached the court.

The Advocate General Purushendra Kaurav on behalf of the state government informed the court that there cannot be any discrimination with Covid-19 patients of one state with those from the other. On the basis of this, the divisional bench of the Madhya Pradesh HC ordered the Maharashtra government to ensure an uninterrupted supply of oxygen to the state.

Last Wednesday, the Principal Secretary Health of Maharashtra, Pradeep Kumar Vyas had issued an order saying the oxygen produced in Maharashtra will be used for the state only.

Reacting to it, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called up his counterpart from Maharashtra and later told the media that Thackeray has assured him to look into the matter. We will be bridging the shortfall with the help from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, Chouhan had said that the state will ensure that oxygen supply increases to 150 tonnes by month-end.

The state government had also asked to produce oxygen from the existing 50-60% to 70-80% capacity to meet the growing demand amid surging cases of Covid-19 in the state.

Experienced coach Noel Wilson will join Owen Coyle's backroom staff at Jamshedpur FC as an assistant coach for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season alongside assistant coach Sandy Stewart and goalkeeping coach Ezequiel Gomez.

Lenovo Z2 Plus 64GB detailed review

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is undoubtedly one of the most powerful mobile processors out there today. This SoC had already shown its prowess in the LG G5, HTC 10, OnePlus 3, Xiaomi Mi 5, LeEco Le Max 2, and basically every flagship phone available today. However, no one expected it on a sub-20k smartphone, but here we are with the Lenovo Z2 Plus.

It starts at a mere Rs. 18,000, and just the presence of the Snapdragon 820 makes it seem like a bargain. But is it? Let’s break it down.

Build and Design
The Lenovo Z2 Plus has a generic design, but with the metal and glass treatment. The candy-bar design works, but it doesn’t really give the phone a personality of its own. You may still find it attractive, but I think a Moto X Play, with its plastic body looked more original.

That said, the design is definitely functional. It has a small footprint, making it really ergonomic. That being said, the fiberglass back is a fingerprint magnet and catches scratches very easily. Lenovo does provide a cover in the box, though.

The build quality is good, and not as prone to bumps as you think. I don’t like how slippery the body is, though the cover makes up for it. Overall, the Z2 Plus has a functional design, which many would like, and I wouldn’t question it given the price.

Display and UI
The phone sports a 5-inch IPS display. It is adequately bright and has good legibility in all lighting conditions. To make the screen more likeable and ward off fingerprints, the pre-installed matte screen protector does a fantastic job. Before you roll your eyes at the resolution, consider that the 1080p screen actually helps battery life, and looks good enough on the 5-inch panel. It has a maximum brightness of 547 Lux.

The Z2 Plus runs on a custom ROM called ZUI 2.0 by Lenovo. It is based on Android Marshmallow and is a very light and non-intrusive for the most part. The only menu, which you will be using often is an iOS-like control centre, which requires some getting used to. The appearance is mostly like the Google Launcher and the UI is quite smooth.

The most interesting part, however, is the implementation of the fingerprint scanner. It can jump directly to the home screen when the screen is off. It’s not as fast as Pixel Imprint, but still fast enough and quite accurate. You can also set the button for tasks, like swiping left to right for switching apps, double tapping for camera or Google voice etc. Further, It's totally up to you whether you want to use a single button for Android navigation or opt for the on-screen keys. The UI is created in this way so you never have to reach for the top of the screen.

Performance: The new sub-20K champ
No other phone, except the now discounted LeEco Le Max2 comes even lose to the Lenovo Z2 Plus in terms of specs. The phone is an absolute beast where performance is concerned and kills the competition by a large margin. Even the similarly specced Le Max 2 is a little slower compared to this phone.

The lower 1080p resolution keeps performance to its optimum and even with demanding games on the screen, the temperatures never went above 40 degree celcius. However, the performance of this device is weak compared to the OnePlus 3, but then again, the OnePlus 3 costs Rs. 8,000 more than the Z2 Plus. Still, the performance of the Z2 Plus is quite smooth, no matter what you throw at it. Heavy gaming titles such as Need for Speed no limits, Hitman Sniper or Vainglory don't seem to slow down the phone either and I was able to switch between the three with utmost ease.

Call quality and reception on the phone is quite good as well. Even in areas where the connection was spotty, I never encountered a call drop. The bottom mounted single speaker is loud, but the audio does distort at higher volumes. Audio quality via the headphones on the other hand is quite crisp and clear.

Battery: A day’s worth
A small display with 1080p resolution and a large battery means good battery life, and that is exactly the case here. The 3500mAh battery on the Z2 Plus easily lasted me a work day, during the test period. On a full charge, the phone runs for about 7 to 7.5 hours on the PC Mark battery test. As on every phone, gaming depletes battery life, but even with an hour of gaming every day the Z2 Plus can withstand a full work day's worth of usage.

Camera: Could have been better
The only thing missing from the phone is a good camera. Don't get me wrong, this 13MP rear camera on the Z2 Plus is not bad. In fact,  it is actually one of the top ten cameras in its category, but it is not its best suit. Images taken in normal lighting conditions have good colour reproduction and respectable dynamic range. However, as soon as the light starts to go dim, the images tend to show more noise.

The HDR mode does help but it takes a second or two to capture the image properly and a very steady hand. The camera also lets you shoot videos in 4K, but the lack of OIS (optical image stabilisation) and a slower autofocus during videos add up to a sub-optimal experience. On the other hand, the front facing camera is quite good and takes decent selfies even in low light.

Images taken from Lenovo Z2 Plus

Bottomline: Buy it!
The Lenovo Z2 Plus is hands down the best smartphone to buy under Rs. 20,000. It performs well, features a good display, has a functional design and a day’s worth of battery life. The only area where it lags behind is the camera performance, but all things considered, it is still recommendable. All in all, if you are investing on a 20k phone, get the Lenovo Z2 Plus.

Snowflake IPO Raises $3.36 Billion in Year's Biggest US Listing

California-based Snowflake said it was aiming to sell 28 million shares at $100 to $110 per share

Highlights
  • Snowflake's IPO eclipses that of Royalty Pharma
  • Snowflake confidentially filed to go public earlier this year
  • Sequoia owned an 8.4 percent stake in the company before the offering

Snowflake said late on Tuesday that its initial public offering raised $3.36 billion (roughly Rs. 24,711 crores) after it was priced above the target range in the biggest US listing so far this year.

The IPO, which was priced at $120 (roughly Rs. 8,830) per share, values the cloud-based data warehouse firm at north of $30 billion (roughly Rs. 2,20,606 crores).

San Mateo, California-based Snowflake said on Monday it was aiming to sell 28 million shares at $100 (roughly Rs. 7,350) to $110 (rouhgly Rs. 8,090) per share after its expected pricing was raised from a range of $75 (roughly Rs. 5,520) to $85 (roughly Rs. 6,250) per share last week.

Snowflake's IPO eclipses that of Royalty Pharma, which so far was the biggest IPO of 2020, and underscores the recent rebound in the US market for new stocks after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted several companies to put IPO plans on hold.

Snowflake confidentially filed to go public earlier this year, shortly after its last funding in February that valued it at over $12 billion (roughly Rs. 88,246 crores). Venture capital firm Sequoia owned an 8.4 percent stake in the company before the offering.

Snowflake's revenue jumped 173.9 percent to $264.7 million (roughly Rs. 1,946 crores) for the full year ended January 31, though its net loss nearly doubled to $348.54 million (roughly Rs. 2,563 crores).

The company's shares are set to start trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday under the ticker "SNOW," and the offering is expected to close on September 18.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Allen & Co and Citigroup are the lead underwriters for the offering.

Verdict

The HIFIMAN TWS600 is a competent audiophile-grade true wireless pair of earphones that boast sonic accuracy and an uncommon A-shaped sound signature. It also features an alleged wireless range of 150m in an open space and over 38 hours of battery life along with the charging case. Although they aren’t the most aesthetic or premium-looking pair of earphones, the HIFIMAN TWS600 sports a snug fit inside the ear. They are comfortable to wear over extended periods of usage without feeling overly fatigued. Overall, these earphones are geared towards audiophiles, individuals who prefer a more bass-forward approach might be slightly disappointed with these.

BUY HIFIMAN TWS600

HIFIMAN TWS600 detailed review

HIFIMAN, a Chinese headphone and audio equipment manufacturer, cemented its status as a brand catering to audiophiles with products such as the HIFIMAN Sundara, and their flagship, Shangri-La, which is priced at a whopping Rs 35,99,900. Known for delivering some of the best planar magnetic tech in headphones, the company has garnered a fair bit of attention from audiophiles. While the company largely specialises in wired, high-end headphones, they have also begun testing the waters when it comes to wireless in-ears. The HIFIMAN TWS600 is a high fidelity true wireless offering from the company. These feature the company’s proprietary Topology Diaphragm drivers which promise sonic accuracy despite being wireless. Let’s see how they fared.

Build and design

Putting it mildly, the HIFIMAN TWS600 earphones have an odd design characteristic. While most manufacturers are attempting to make their true wireless offerings look sleek and streamlined, the HIFIMAN TWS600 looks excessively “bulge-y”. The charging case resembles an elongated egg, sports a metallic grey sheen and the HIFIMAN logo, while the earphones themselves are shaped like kidney beans with odd bulging protrusions.

The protrusion we mentioned actually leads to the earbuds’ angled nozzles. The purpose for the, frankly, ugly protrusion could be the way the patented Topology Diaphragm drivers are placed inside the earphones and their dimensions. However, this is just speculation. In addition to the bulge, the outer portion of the earphones houses the physical buttons. There are transparent patterns around the buttons which allow the LEDs inside the earbuds to shine through. There are also tiny HIFIMAN logos on the side of the earphones.

Coming back to the charging case, upon opening it, you will discover a battery indicator with four LEDs that relay the amount of battery life the case has remaining. The LED on the earphones also glows, quite brightly, when they are tucked within the case to signify that they’re charging. The case houses a USB Type-C charging port on the rear, towards the right side.

Design aside, the charging case refuses to open up using only one hand, at least for us. The best way to do it is by prying it apart using two thumbs, however, it still takes some force. It is relatively pocketable but will bulge out considerably if your pants are form-fitting.

The HIFIMAN TWS600 also comes with a USB Type-C charging cable and not 2 or 3, but 8 additional pairs of silicone tips including double-flanged, triple-flanged, wide-bore and more options. The result? The earphones fit inside most ears extremely securely and feel comfortable to wear even over extended periods of usage.

Unfortunately, the control buttons on these earphones were a major pain point for us. Literally, painful… Since the buttons are relatively small in size and quite hard to press, they cause the earbuds to dig further into your ear when you press them. We found that using multiple fingers to secure the earbud’s position and then pressing the button was slightly more comfortable.

You can control music playback (pause/play) and answer/reject calls by tapping the button on either side once. A double-tap on the right increases the volume while double-tapping the left decreases it. Triple taps help you seek tracks, with the right going forward a song while the left taking you to the previous one. Holding either button down for two seconds summons your phone’s voice assistant. Not really standard controls, but they work for the most part.

Overall, the HIFIMAN TWS600 is quite unusual-looking, especially the earphones themselves with the unsightly bulges. The comfort and fit, nevertheless, is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the comfortable fit was counteracted with some discomfort due to the physical controls and their tendency to make you push the earphones deep inside your ears.

Features

Source: HIFIMAN website

HIFIMAN claims that the TWS600 has an absurdly-long Bluetooth range of up to 490 feet (150m)! Sporting Bluetooth v5.0, the box, however, makes a more conservative claim of 10m - 50m (33 feet - 164 feet) Bluetooth range. On the website, HIFIMAN claims to have achieved the astounding 150m of Bluetooth range in an open field. While we couldn’t test the lofty claims of 150m (finding 490 feet of open area in Mumbai is a chore, guys), we did manage to achieve around 80 feet in a large parking area without any lags in the connection. However, put a few barriers between this and you’ll start to hear drops and skips.

Additionally, the HIFIMAN TWS600 also features a total battery life of 38.5 hours. According to the company, you get about 5.5 hours in the buds and 33 hours through the charging case. In our tests, the buds lasted about 6 hours with the volume at 40 per cent (these earphones are inordinately loud!) and the case lasted well over a week’s worth of usage as well, which is pretty impressive. The charging time is fairly brief as well, with the buds needing about an hour to charge fully, while the case charges up to full in 1.5 hours.

Despite being audiophile-grade earphones, the HIFIMAN TWS600 only supports SBC and AAC audio codecs. Unfortunately, there’s no aptX support. The company claims that the earphones are tuned in a manner to ensure low latency, and their claims were proven right in our tests. While watching content on YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video, there was a very negligible delay between the video and audio. It was almost unnoticeable.

The earphones sport an IPX4 dust and sweat resistant rating as well. So, they are well equipped to deal with light splashes and sweat when you’re exercising. However, it is not safe to go swimming with.

Performance

The sound signature of the HIFIMAN TWS600 is peculiar in comparison to most other competing products in the true wireless segment. It features an ‘A-shaped’ sound graph, with a higher emphasis on the mids and upper mids that makes the lows and highs sound recessed in comparison. However, the lows and bass response seems a tad more recessed than the highs.

The bass response on these earphones, while controlled and detailed, ends up sounding quite lethargic since it lacks drive. It takes a backseat to the mids and upper-mids. In the track Around the World by Kings of Leon, the shakers in the background sound listless since the mid-range guitar simply overpowers them.

The vocals are clear and well-articulated as seen in tracks such as Rescue Me by OneRepublic. Female vocals can sometimes have a bit of sibilance, but only if you push the volume past 50 per cent. The earphones get extremely loud, so it’s best to listen to these earphones at the 40 - 50 per cent volume range. The highs, while slightly overpowered by the impactful mids, sound sonically accurate. They also have a shine and brilliance to them all without sounding too fatiguing. Whether this is the result of HIFIMAN’s unique tuning or their Topology Diaphragm tech or both, we can’t judge.

HIFIMAN has done a great job making a mids and upper-mids focused sound signature sound almost flat. The detail retention across frequencies is extremely commendable. However, the bass could have been slightly boosted to make it energetic.

The soundstage is where these earphones blow past most of their competitors. It is ridiculously expansive, featuring impressive width, and even some height. The music fills inside your head and appears to extend beyond it, which is something you usually see in open-back headphones. Given that these are closed-back, in-ears, the soundstage is truly remarkable. The only other true wireless pair of earphones that comes close to this is the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless.

Imaging is excellent as well with each instrument being easily placeable in the soundscape and instrument separation is quite decent too, which instances of overlap being uncommon. Call quality is pretty decent. On both ends, the quality is manageable. In our microphone test, the live transcribing app was able to pick up most of the words we spoke accurately as well.

Overall, the HIFIMAN TWS600 true wireless earphones offer a largely atypical sound profile. However, it manages to retain details across frequencies. The bass lacks drive but still sounds very intricate and precise. In addition to maintaining clarity and detail across frequencies, it manages to sound pretty euphonic as well. Except for maybe the highs on loud volume levels which tends to sound a bit too bright.

Bottomline

300,000 Pounds Suspect Cash Seized From Indian-Origin Couple's UK Home

Crime prevention officials in UK recovered over 300,000 pounds in cash from an Indian-origin couple.

London:

Crime prevention officials and police in the UK have recovered over 300,000 pounds in cash suspected of being the proceeds of crime from an Indian-origin couple.

Searches of a house belonging to husband-wife Sailesh and Harkit Singara in Edgware, north west London, revealed a total of more than 200,000 pounds, with around half of the money neatly stacked on a bed. Another 100,000 pounds was discovered in a suitcase on the floor, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

"Some Money Service Businesses (MSBs) continue to pose a risk to the UK by facilitating the movement of illicit cash. The NECC and its partners have developed an increased understanding of this threat, which is enabling more effective action against suspicious MSBs while supporting legitimate businesses," said Rachael Herbert, Head of Threat Response at the NCA.

Nearby, officers found a further 100,000 pounds in a bag which was in the possession of Sailesh Mandalia, a business associate of Singara.

Believing the money to be the proceeds of crime, Metropolitan Police Organised Crime Partnership (OCP) investigators applied for a forfeiture order - a civil process in the UK intended to recover illicit cash where there has been no proven criminal offence.

In October 2019, the order was granted at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, along with instructions that the three respondents pay costs of a combined 1,895 pounds.

However, Mandalia and the Singaras had appealed against the forfeiture.

All the accused, who collectively own two money service businesses, asserted that the cash was intended for legitimate business accounts, and that poor accounting over several years was responsible for any confusion.

But on September 10, a judge at Southwark Crown Court dismissed their appeal, ensuring the full sum can be recovered by the NCA.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony O'Sullivan, Head of the Met Police OCP, said: "While the three individuals are not accused, and have not been convicted, of any crime in relation to these events, the 300,000 pounds recovered will now go into the public purse where it can positively impact on communities.

"Money is at the heart of organised crime, and it is vital that those in possession of huge sums of cash can account for it legitimately. We at the OCP continue to tackle the criminality that generates illicit cash in London and beyond," he said.

The court additionally instructed the three respondents to pay costs of a combined 4,350 pounds.

Apple introduced a cheaper version of its smartwatch, its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its trendsetting products while many consumers are forced to scrimp during the coronavirus pandemic.

SAN RAMON, Calif.: Apple introduced a cheaper version of its smartwatch, its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its trend-setting products while many consumers are forced to scrimp during the coronavirus pandemic.

The scaled-down Apple Watch follows on the heels of a budget iPhone the company released five months ago as the economy cratered and unemployment rates rose above the levels reached during the Great Recession more than a decade ago.

Apple also took the wraps off a new high-end watch model, a next-generation iPad and a couple of new subscription services during a virtual event held Tuesday. The company normally also rolls out its new iPhones at this time of year, but production problems caused by the pandemic have delayed their release until at least October.

CEO Tim Cook didnt mention iPhones during Tuesdays one-hour presentation recorded at the company’s massive, but now mostly empty, headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The Apple Watch has never come close to rivaling the iPhone’s popularity, but it does dominate the market for smartwatches. Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley estimates about 51 million Apple Watches will be sold this year, a 5% increase from last year. The research firm GlobalData pegs Apple’s share of the $64 billion smartwatch market at roughly 60%.

The new discount model, called the Apple Watch SE, will sell for $279 and be available beginning Friday. The price is a markdown from the $399 that Apple is asking for the next version of its higher end watch, the Series 6. Apple watches have been selling for an average of $377, based on Walkleys calculations.

Apple added more features to help the watch monitor its owners health, including a sensor that can read blood oxygen levels. The feature, specific to the Series 6, could be timely, given that COVID-19 frequently attacks the lungs.

Apple also announced a new fitness subscription service tailored for its watches for $10 per month, as well as a new option that will bundle its existing music, video, news and gaming services into a package that will cost $15 to $30 per month.

Tens of millions of people already subscribe to Apple’s various services, helping the company double its revenue during the past four years within a division that creates products for the more than 1 billion iPhones, iPads, watches and other devices that the people already use.

The services division also includes Apples app store, which is under regulatory scrutiny for charging a commission of up to 30% for products sold through other companies who have no other option but to use the store to reach the mostly affluent consumers who buy iPhone products.

Blackberry Passport detailed review

It will be very difficult to find someone who’s envious of Blackberry’s current state in the market. The former mobility giant is a shadow of its former self and has seen its market share erode almost continuously since the advent of touchscreen smartphones. However, one thing you can’t blame Blackberry of being is complacent. The Canadian phone manufacturer has constantly tried to innovate and experiment with device types, form factors and operating systems that try their very best to marry the best of the productivity world with the touchscreen world.

The Blackberry Passport is emblematic of the ‘new’ Blackberry’s strategy to pivot back to focusing on productivity users and to be ‘unconventional’ and ‘disruptive’. The Passport ignores what is now considered standard for smartphones- a candy bar design, a large 16:9 screen and no physical keyboard. As a result, the Passport is unlike any smartphone in the market both in terms of looks and usability.

Let’s see if the changes make sense.

The Design and Build

In an ocean of similar looking touchscreen smartphones, the Blackberry Passport stands out. As is evident from its photos, the Passport is not shaped like a candy bar but instead is almost a perfect square and emulates a real-world Passport. Blackberry’s explanation for this unorthodox design is that most business users are happy placing their phones and passports in their front jacket/blazer/coat pocket, so the Passport is perfectly suited for that. On that count, Blackberry is correct. The Passport fits snugly in the front pocket of both my jacket and shirt. The fit is very snug and there’s no way you’ll be able to ignore the phone as it sits against your chest but at least it’s comfortable. That comfort level drops when you put the Passport in your pants pocket, especially if you’re wearing trousers or jeans that themselves are a little tight.

The Passport is not slim and measures 9.3 mm in thickness which would be manageable if it wasn’t such a broad phone to begin with (3.56 inches across). In comparison, the Sony Xperia Z3 is 7.3 mm thick and 2.83 inches wide, the massive Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is 8.5 mm thick and 3.09 inches wide while the iPhone 6 Plus is a mere 7.1 mm thick and just over 3-inches wide. As a result, the Passport immediately culls a large portion of the prospective buyers market. While older Blackberry smartphones, still meant for business users, didn’t outright turn off non-business users, the Passport appears like it was built with the express intent to do so. The Passport also tilts the scales at 196 grams which is on the higher side when compared to modern high-end smartphones.

On the other hand, as we’ve come to expect from Blackberry, the Passport’s build quality is uniformly excellent. The smartphone is very solid and the materials used in its construction are very premium. The front of the phone is encased in glass and the bottom 1/4th has the plastic keyboard (which I’ll talk about below). The sides sport solid metal bands while the back is made up of a soft touch rubberized material with a matte finish.

Overall, the Passport is a very well built device but in terms of aesthetics, it will please only a few.

The Keyboard

What is a Blackberry phone without a keyboard? In the smartphone world that almost qualifies as a theological question and the Passport reaffirms Blackberry’s belief in the physical keyboard. The Passport’s three row keyboard, not exactly a classic smartphone keyboard, is very wide and doesn’t have any keys for numbers or symbols. For those keys, the Blackberry exploits its 4.5-in touchscreen to add virtual rows. This immediately becomes a problem especially if you’re used to typing at hypersonic speeds on a Blackberry keyboard because moving between virtual keys and physical ones is not a seamless affair and hampers speed. Also, I felt that the vertical space occupied by the physical keyboard was too little to afford typing comfortably. Whenever I used the Passport’s keyboard, my fingers felt too cramped and I ended up missing a taller touchscreen keyboard. To type comfortably, the Passport forces you to hold it closer to the bottom edge than near the middle which again does not let you do things quickly if you want to use the touchscreen.

The Passport’s keyboard is unique in the sense that it recognizes gestures. You can scroll through pages by swiping up or down on the keyboard, you can close any app by swiping up from the keyboard to the touchscreen and you can also select any word that the phone’s auto-correct dictionary suggests by swiping up on the keyboard under the word. However, chances are that the only reason you will use the gestures on the keyboard is because it’s a hassle to shift your grip to make the touchscreen accessible, and not because the keyboard gestures actually improve usability.

I realise that usability is a highly subjective matter and that others may have a different experience with the way Passport has been designed and can be used. However, in my opinion, ergonomics on the Passport is a big miss and the device does not make it comfortable for me to use either the touchscreen or the physical keyboard. I shudder to think how uncomfortable the phone will be for users with smaller hands than mine.

The Screen

Moving on to sunnier climes, the Passport’s 4.5-inch IPS display is very sharp and boasts of a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels and pixel density of 453 ppi. The display has excellent viewing angles and accurate colour reproduction. Outdoor visibility is also very good and at full brightness you will have no problems using the phone under bright sunlight. The sharpness also means that the Passport excels (no pun intended) at reproducing spreadsheets and word documents.

Unfortunately, the Passport’s unorthodox form factor again attempts to play spoilsport here. The screen’s 1:1 aspect ratio (something we saw in Blackberry’s Q5 and Q10 as well) means that black bars take up real estate when playing videos. This is particularly frustrating in the case of HD or full HD videos, both of which are in 16:9 aspect ratio. If you like watching videos and movies on your phone, you will feel disappointed by the fact that you can’t make optimal use of the Passport’s hi-res display.

Overall, the Passport’s screen is ideal for working on office docs and spreadsheets or browsing the Web but not so much for watching videos.

The Software

The Passport runs on Blackberry 10.3 OS which brings in some changes to BB10 but nothing that can be categorized as revolutionary. BB 10.3 still uses a combination of swipes and gestures to navigate the interface and includes the very useful Blackberry Hub, which is a central repository of all ‘communication’ on your phone including messages, social media updates, chats and emails. To get a better idea of how BB10 works, head on over to my Blackberry Z30 review.

The Blackberry Hub

With BB 10.3, BB OS is now able to run Android 4.3 apps. The Amazon App Store comes pre-installed and you can also install some third party app stores like SlideME or AppBrain to get access to a larger collection of Android apps. While it’s great that you can install apps from both the Blackberry World App Store and Android stores, you should keep in mind that the Passport doesn’t get access to all Android apps. Popular games like Dead Trigger 2 are unavailable on the Passport. However, not finding a popular app to download is relatively rare and even if you don’t, there are quality alternatives available.

BB OS 10.3 also comes with some UI tweaks including the ability to pull down the quick settings menu from any screen (swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers) and the presence of a permanent homescreen, which is essentially the multitasking window. The entire interface also features a flatter design which is in line with modern UI design principles.

Then there’s Blackberry Blend, a feature that lets you work on and access documents, emails, messages, notes and calendar entries synced to your Blackberry account on your PC. Once you install Blend on your PC you can reply to emails or continue drafting one from your phone on your PC and you will also get notifications on your PC. Blend is a handy feature especially if you get a lot of emails and don’t want to constantly check your phone. The Passport also comes pre-installed with the Docs to Go app.

Blackberry Blend

The Performance

Although the Passport can run Android benchmarks, the fact that it runs them in a runtime environment means that the numbers don’t really represent accurate performance. However, just for comparison sake, take a look below at how the Passport did in some standard Android benchmarks:

In terms of real world performance, the Passport gave me nothing to complain about. Performance was smooth and lag-free and apps opened quickly. Browsing was also a good experience thanks to both the phone’s speed and the sharp screen.

Gaming on the Passport is a less than ideal experience mainly because of the display’s unorthodox aspect ratio. As a result, I saw parts of a game’s HUD getting cut off, or the entire game being stretched to fit the screen. Also, there was a clear performance difference between games downloaded from the Blackberry App World store and the Android games. Finally, the metal elements on the Passport (the sides, the BB logo at the back) heat up substantially after only a few minutes of gaming which is alarming.

Call quality on the Passport is undeniably fantastic. Voices during a call sounded crisp and clear without any static or echoing. The loudspeaker lives up to its name and delivers good volume without distortion.

The Passport has one of the most powerful batteries we’ve seen in a smartphone. In our test we played a full HD video on the phone with Wi-Fi on and brightness at max and the battery just dropped by 6% in an hour. This means that the phone will easily last more than a day of normal use on a single charge, which is exceptional.

The Passport is great at playing both music and video. Audio playback over earphones and the loudspeaker was very good and the quality was at par with any top of the line smartphone. Video playback was also really good and the Passport played all our 1080p and 720p test videos including popular formats such as MP4 and MKV. Of course, the 1:1 aspect ratio means that almost any new movie or TV show or Internet video will run with big black bars running on both the top and bottom of the screen.

The Camera

The Passport entered our labs with a reputation as the best Blackberry with respect to camera quality. I’m happy to report that the Passport lived up to the reputation. Unfortunately, since Blackberry phones haven’t exactly set the world on fire in the past with their imaging prowess, the Passport doesn’t need to do all that much to jump to top of the pile.

The Passport’s 13MP camera is good at shooting photos under good light both indoors and outdoors and the photos have decent sharpness and good colour levels. However, even under good lighting, the resulting photos have more than average noise. The Passport’s camera takes a good amount of time to focus as well and when shooting photos under poor light it was just unable to hold proper focus. The photos also showed overexposure issues especially in the white areas in scenes.

Click on the gear icon in the top right corner to view photos in full resolution

Videos shot with the Passport also exhibited the overexposure issues but on the whole, the videos looked good. The ‘Continuous Focus’ mode worked well and the sound recording was also up to the mark.

So, the Passport may be the best Blackberry yet for shooting photos but if you look at the universe outside Blackberry smartphones, it doesn’t really stand out.

The Bottomline

The Blackberry Passport has great specs, a display of fantastic quality and solid build quality but it feels like a novelty device and not one for mainstream consumption. The Passport’s design and size puts it alongside the many ‘Porsche’ branded smartphones or those made by Vertu as a device that’s too caught up with its own ‘uniqueness’ to actually want to please mainstream users.

It’s clear that Blackberry wants business users to buy the Passport but gone are the days when phone manufacturers could put consumers into neat little buckets like that. Chances are even if you like to wear a suit to work, you will change into more comfortable clothing at the end of the day but the Passport is a device that’s not made to follow your example. Instead it feels like it wants to only cater to you for only half of the day and in this day and age, and for a price of Rs. 49,990, that’s simply not enough.

Air quality in five major cities in Oregon was the worst on record as the state continues to be blanketed by thick smoke from wildfires ravaging nearly 5 million acres in the U.S. West, environmental officials in the heavily forested state said.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 8:15 AM IST

SACRAMENTO, Calif./WASHINGTON, D.C.: Air quality in five major cities in Oregon was the worst on record as the state continues to be blanketed by thick smoke from wildfires ravaging nearly 5 million acres in the U.S. West, environmental officials in the heavily forested state said.

The fires have generated so much smoke that along with hazardous air from California to Washington state, skies above the U.S. capital have also taken on a hazy din, thanks in part to smoke wafting thousands of miles from the West Coast.

The unprecedented wildfires – burning across a total of some 4.5 million acres (1.8 million hectares) as of Tuesday – have burned through towns in Oregon while also devouring forests in California, Washington and Idaho. The resulting blanket of ash and smoke has made the region’s air quality among the worst in the world.

Hardest hit is Oregon, where tiny bits of smoke and ash known as particulates have reached the highest levels on record in Portland, Eugene, Bend, Medford and Klamath Falls, the state’s Department of Environmental Quality said on Tuesday.

Air this week in all five cities was rated “hazardous” according to air quality standards, and in Bend, the air quality index topped 500, exceeding the air quality scale altogether, the department said.

Satellite images show that some of the smoke from the fires, traveling on the jet stream at high altitude, has wafted east as far as New York and Washington, D.C., according to the National Weather Service.

That smoke is not necessarily reducing the air quality near the ground, though.

John Simko, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said that generally, such particles are carried high on the wind and may not come close enough to earth to impact air quality.

He did not address air quality in a specific region of the country. But on Tuesday, measures of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, in New York and Washington, D.C., were within a range considered safe by U.S. standards.

Residents shun Chinese ‘vertical forest’ housing project because trees meant to revolutionise urban living just attracted plagues of mosquitos

An experimental green housing project in a Chinese megacity promised prospective residents life in a 'vertical forest', with manicured gardens on every balcony.

All 826 apartments were sold out by April this year, according to the project's estate agent, but instead of a modern eco-paradise, the towers look like the set of a desolate, post-apocalyptic film.

Thousands Of Oregon Evacuees Shelter From Wildfires As U.S. Disaster Declared

Thousands of evacuees displaced by deadly wildfires in Oregon settled into a second week of life in shelters and car camping on Tuesday as fire crews battled on, and search teams scoured the ruins of incinerated homes for the missing.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:54 AM IST

PORTLAND, Ore.: Thousands of evacuees displaced by deadly wildfires in Oregon settled into a second week of life in shelters and car camping on Tuesday as fire crews battled on, and search teams scoured the ruins of incinerated homes for the missing.

With state resources stretched to their limit, President Donald Trump approved a request from Oregon’s governor for a federal disaster declaration, bolstering U.S. government assistance for emergency response and relief efforts.

Dozens of fires have charred some 4.5 million acres (1.8 million hectares) of tinder-dry brush, grass and woodlands in Oregon, California and Washington state since August, ravaging several small towns, destroying thousands of homes and killing at least 34 people.

Eight deaths have been confirmed during the past week in Oregon, which became the latest and most concentrated hot spot in a larger summer outbreak of fires across the entire western United States. The Pacific Northwest was hardest hit.

The conflagrations, which officials and scientists have described as unprecedented in scope and ferocity, have also filled the region’s skies with smoke and soot, compounding a public health crisis already posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Satellite images showed high-altitude plumes of smoke from the fires drifting as far east as New York City and Washington, D.C., carried aloft by the jet stream.

The fires roared to life in California in mid-August, and erupted across Oregon and Washington around Labor Day last week, many of them sparked by catastrophic lightning storms and stoked by record-breaking heat waves and bouts of howling winds.

Weather conditions improved early this week, enabling firefighters to begin to make headway in efforts to contain and tamp down the blazes.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) said 16,600 firefighters were still battling 25 major fires on Tuesday, after achieving full containment around the perimeter of other large blazes.

Firefighters in the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Los Angeles waged an all-out campaign to save the famed Mount Wilson Observatory and an adjacent complex of broadcast transmission towers from flames that crept to within 500 feet of the site.

RECORD ACREAGE LOST

At least 25 people have perished in California wildfires over the past four weeks, while more than 4,200 homes and other buildings have gone up in smoke, CalFire reported. Nearly 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares) in California alone have burned – more than in any single year in its history – and five of the 20 largest wildfires on record in the state have occurred during that time-frame.

One wildfire fatality has been confirmed in Washington state, where some 400 structures have been lost. Roughly 1 million acres (400,000 hectares) have been blackened in Oregon, double the state’s annual average over the past decade.

At the height of the crisis there, some 500,000 residents – at least 10% of the state’s population – were under some form of evacuation alert, many forced to flee their homes as swiftly advancing flames closed in on their neighborhoods. More than 1,700 structures, most of them dwellings, have been incinerated

At last count, some 16 people reported missing remained unaccounted for in Oregon, emergency management officials said. Last week, authorities said they were bracing for possible mass casualties as search teams began combing wreckage of homes destroyed during chaotic evacuations.

In the fire-stricken southwestern Oregon town of Phoenix, uprooted families, many with young children, were sleeping in their cars, huddling at a civic center or in churches, City Council member Sarah Westover said.

“It’s much more difficult to follow the COVID restrictions given the environment,” Westover said.

Marcus Welch, a food service director and youth soccer coach in Phoenix, said he was helping a group of high school students whose homes were spared to run a donation center set up to assist evacuees from a mobile-home park reduced to ash.

“Every day, I hear a sad story. Every day, I hear a family displaced. People are crying because high school kids are giving them food, water. … It’s been a total blessing,” Welch said. “Some people, they lost everything, so we encourage them to take everything they can.”

Westover said her community was in grief, while fearing a flareup might force them to flee again. Her house in Phoenix was spared, but others nearby were leveled.

“It’s like it cherry-picked – it burned down a house, then skipped two, then burned down another. I guess that’s the way they kind of work with the embers flying around,” Westover said.

Rhonda and Chuck Johnston, of Gates, Oregon, described celebrating their 32nd wedding anniversary outside their RV playing card games and eating barbecued chicken in the parking lot of a fairgrounds after a hasty evacuation.

“This is something you never think you’re going to go through,” Rhonda Johnston said. “We grabbed a couple days’ worth of clothes, pills, and two cars full of pictures and two dogs and a cat and our daughter.”

Black Widow Release Date Likely Delayed Again: Report

US theatres aren’t performing as studios had hoped.

Black Widow Release Date Likely Delayed Again: Report

Highlights
  • Black Widow release date currently set for November
  • Wonder Woman 1984 recently moved from Oct to Dec
  • Pixar’s Soul, also set for Nov, might move to Disney+

Black Widow might not release in November. Disney will likely delay the next Marvel Cinematic Universe chapter for a second time, owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. That comes in the wake of Warner Bros. pushing Wonder Woman 1984 from early October to Christmas, on the back of Christopher Nolan's Tenet not delivering as expected for the studio at the American box office. Tenet has done better globally, but since the US is the single biggest contributor for Hollywood movies, studios — including Disney — are not confident about releasing big blockbuster movies such as Black Widow in theatres during the pandemic.

Variety brings word of Disney looking to delay the Black Widow release date for a second time. In mid-March, as coronavirus swept across the world and quarantine lockdowns were put in effect, Disney delayed Black Widow. Its current November release date was announced a couple of weeks later. This isn't the first we've heard of it though. When Warner Bros. was looking to delay Wonder Woman 1984 to November, Deadline had noted that Black Widow would move from that month. But WW84 instead jumped to Christmas. Disney still wishing to delay Black Widow suggests it's more due to the condition of the US box office.

Disney declined to comment on the potential new development. If Black Widow does end up getting delayed, that would leave the Bond film No Time to Die as the only major movie in November. No Time to Die is set to release November 12 in the UK and November 20 in the US. An exact release date in India has not been set but Universal Pictures is hoping to push No Time to Die in Indian cinemas in November too. Theatres remain shut till September 30, and though the government has yet to publicly discuss their reopening, the industry has been making a considerable push on social media under the hashtag “#UnlockCinemaSaveJobs”.

Additionally, Variety notes that Disney is also exploring options for Pixar's next movie, Soul. It's currently set to open opposite No Time to Die on November 20, but that's unlikely to happen, according to Variety. It will either be delayed or be moved to Disney+, as has been the case for Artemis Fowl, Hamilton, and The One and Only Ivan earlier this year. It's unclear if Pixar's Soul might take the Mulan approach, which involves an additional fee on top of the Disney+ subscription. If that happens, Soul won't be available on Disney+ Hotstar at launch.

There's no word on when Black Widow would move to. And it's unclear what that might mean for the rest of the MCU slate, which has planned for Eternals in February 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in May 2021, Spider-Man 3 in December 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder in February 2022, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in March 2022, Black Panther II in May 2022, and Captain Marvel 2 in July 2022.

Automatic Pani Puri Machine? Twitter Loves This 'Jugaad'

Twitter is all for this automatic pani puri machine.

The demand for gadgets that reduce contact between people has soared during the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps that is why Twitter is fascinated with a pani puri vending machine that minimises contact between the seller and the customer. Pani puri, puchka, golgappa or pani batasha is a beloved street food. However, with no-contact and social distancing being the new normal, many had been avoiding this snack which is usually assembled at the spot and served, rather than delivered home.

This vending machine may just be the answer to those challenges.

IAS officer Awanish Sharan took to the microblogging platform on Tuesday to share a video of a panipuri shop in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, which has deployed the machine to dispense flavoured water automatically.

The video, filmed at the establishment which is aptly named 'Touch Me Not Pani Puri', shows a customer using the vending machine to sample different flavours of water - garlic, khatta meetha and dhaniya pudina. The machine uses sensors to dispense the flavoured water. Mr Sharan praised it as an amazing "jugaad" or hack in his tweet.

"Automatic Panipuri in Telibandha Raipur," he wrote in Hindi. "Awesome jugaad," he added. Watch the video below:

Since being posted on Twitter a day ago, the clip has garnered 24,000 views and dozens of impressed comments.

"Very nice, will surely visit this pani puri wala," wrote one person in the comments section. "Superb idea," another remarked.

This is not the first innovation that aims to reduce contact between pani puri sellers and their customers. A pani puri vending machine had also gone viral on social media recently.

Could VR help universities teach students? - BBC News

Could VR help universities teach students?

Universities are preparing to reopen but not all teaching will be in-person. The Covid-19 pandemic means that remote learning will also play a pivotal part in education.

BBC Click's Lara Lewington took a trip to a university science department, currently devoid of students, to see how virtual labs could change science education as we know it.

The virtual reality (VR) labs provide a safe place for experiments that may be difficult to do in the flesh - and offer universities who could not afford the kit, the same opportunities to experiment.

Amazon seeks to create a new online shopping portal with top brands and upgraded technology

Highlights
  • Luxury Stores will operate on an invitation-only basis for Prime members
  • Within the Amazon app the new portal will offer improved graphics
  • It will allow brands to sell as a "store within a store"

Amazon unveiled plans Tuesday for a new online luxury "shopping experience" that will seek to connect well-heeled consumers and high-end brands.

The first partner for the new online "Luxury Stores" is Oscar de la Renta, the US fashion house that will show its 2020 collections, with more brands expected in the coming weeks, according to an Amazon statement.

The move is not Amazon's first foray into luxury goods but seeks to create a new online shopping portal with top brands and upgraded technology offering 360-degree views for shoppers.

Luxury Stores will operate on an invitation-only basis for Amazon Prime members.

Within the Amazon app, the new portal will offer improved graphics and visualisation, and allow brands to sell as a "store within a store," controlling their own inventory, selection and pricing.

"We are always listening to and learning from our customers, and we are inspired by feedback from Prime members who want the ability to shop their favorite luxury brands in Amazon's store," said Christine Beauchamp, president of Amazon Fashion.

"We are excited to offer luxury brands the services and technology to build an inspiring, elevated customer experience."

The move comes with Amazon having boosted online sales in many sectors in recent months during the coronavirus pandemic, which has closed many physical stores and kept consumers cautious about going out to shop.

The Importance Of Foreign Language Courses For India

The Importance Of Foreign Language Courses For India

When we learn a language, we just don't gain the ability to read one more set of symbols or recognise one more set of meaningful sounds, we also gain access to a whole new world. A language is a passport to the world of accumulated knowledge of a community; a key to understand a different society; a lens with which to view the culture and history of a group of people.

From times immemorial, foreign language learning has played a significant role in strengthening trade, knowledge, and the military and diplomatic strength of nations. Even European colonial powers accorded a lot of importance to foreign language learning to strengthen their grip on the countries and people they colonised.

In today's world, foreign language as a communication tool is a force multiplier in the fields of trade, diplomacy, defence, etc. India must therefore give serious attention to setting up foreign language universities all over the country to boost the prospects of strengthening its interests globally.

India has the potential to become the leading supplier of global manpower. Traditionally, Indians are known for giving great importance to education and that has resulted in Indians being successful globally. In the US, for a long time, Indian Americans have been the most successful and richest of all the ethnicities. But this is a small percentage of the Indian population worldwide. India's population, with a considerably large percentage being very young, is a significant asset for the country. Apart from meeting our own demand for skilled manpower in various sectors, we can also aim to be the global hub of skilled manpower. Foreign language skills can catalyse this process to a considerably higher degree.

Indians have a natural tendency to be multilingual because of the many languages spoken throughout the country. Apart from the 22 officially-recognised languages, there are 122 other major languages, but the total number of mother tongues (languages and variants) spoken in India are more than 19,500. Most Indians are exposed to more than one language from childhood. Most Indians can converse in more than one language and picking up languages is not a very unusual task for them. Therefore, as far as learning foreign languages are concerned, Indians definitely have an advantage compared to many other nationalities. Research shows that after learning a language (other than the first language), learning more languages become a lot more easier.

Many countries in the world today are suffering from a population deficit and this has naturally resulted in a workforce deficit. Japan, for example is taking many steps to attract skilled manpower from other countries. Canada, Sweden, Germany, Norway, etc. are some other countries that are on the lookout for skilled global manpower for sectors including IT, Management, Hospitality, Agriculture. If Indians are fluent in foreign languages, they will become an even more attractive segment.

Various Indian languages have some similarities with other languages around the world. This makes it easier for certain Indian language speakers to learn certain foreign lanaguages. We can also capitalize on this aspect to produce foreign language experts in our country.

Foreign language fluency can also immensely help in tourism, hospitality in India.

There are several institutions in India that run various foreign language courses. But these are available largely in cities. The government must aggressively take up the mission of setting up foreign language universities all over the country that will prepare a formidable Indian workforce well-versed in global languages.

Apart from skill development and employability enhancement, foreign language expertise is important for strengthening pro-Indian narratives as well as countering anti-India narratives. Chinese radio stations continuously spread aggressive propaganda through powerful radio signals in strategic Indian territories. India, in recent times, has also stepped up such broadcasts in Mandarin but the effort is negligible compared to that if its most hostile neighbour. The Indian government should also encourage private players to broadcast foreign language content in order to strengthen the Indian narrative on various issues. Emphasising on foreign language learning has to be a major part of this strategy.

Apart from increasing global employment prospects and national narratives, foreign language training can boost foreign trade. It will help Indian businesses to penetrate foreign markets more easily. Learning foreign languages (or any language) has other benefits too. Research shows that multilingualism improves memory and brain-power. It also improves multi-tasking abilities and decision-making and keeps the mind sharper for longer period of time.

We need undergraduate and Master's courses in foreign languages, as also diploma and certificate courses. The importance of foreign language universities become more prominent because of this. While short-term courses can be relevant for professionals who need foreign languages to simply communicate in another environment, the in-depth study of a language and its literature is paramount if India wants to pursue global influence seriously.

Ties with China Have Not Worsened amid Border Standoff, MEA Says in Written Reply in Lok Sabha

The 54-member ECOSOC, holding the first plenary meeting of its 2021 session in the General Assembly Hall on Monday, held elections for two seats in the Asia-Pacific States category with Afghanistan, India and China in the fray.

The 54-member ECOSOC, holding the first plenary meeting of its 2021 session in the General Assembly Hall on Monday, held elections for two seats in the Asia-Pacific States category with Afghanistan, India and China in the fray.

The relationship between both countries has steadily deteriorated since May, when China ramped up troops along the LAC in Ladakh, leading to the clashes in Galwan in which 20 Indian Army personnel died.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 5:19 PM IST

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday said that ties with China have not worsened in the aftermath of the border tensions caused by the Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh in June. The government was replying to a question from Trinamool MP Sougata Roy.

The relationship between both countries has steadily deteriorated since May, when China ramped up troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, leading to the clashes in Galwan in which 20 Indian Army personnel died. India, meanwhile, has banned hundreds of mobile apps linked to China, hoping to hit its neighbour with an economic blow.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs told the Rajya Sabha that no infiltration had taken place along the Indo-China Border in six months even as the standoff between the two countries continues in Ladakh.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said the government has conveyed to China that any attempt to "unilaterally" change the status quo along the LAC is not at all acceptable, while acknowledging that India is facing a "challenge" in the region.

Singh had said there should be no doubt about the country's determination to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and asserted that India's armed forces are ready to deal with "all contingencies" in the high-altitude region.

Referring to the Galwan Valley clashes on June 15, Singh had said Indian soldiers "inflicted costs including casualties on the Chinese side", adding the House should have "full confidence" that the armed forces will always rise to the challenge and make the country proud.

"I will not hesitate to share with this august House that we are facing a challenge in Ladakh and I urge the House to pass a resolution in support of our armed forces who have been defending our motherland at great heights and most inclement weather conditions," he had said, adding that although the situation this year is very different, both in terms of scale of troops involved and the number of friction points, India remains committed to the peaceful resolution of the current situation.

Verdict

Throughout our performance tests and subjective use, the Dell UltraSharp UP3214Q monitor performed admirably well on all counts, and it's very well built. If you’re looking for a 4K monitor for work or pleasure, it's really one of the best ones out there, no questions about that.  If you can afford it, just close your eyes and buy it.

Dell UltraSharp UP3214Q detailed review

Screen resolution is a curious thing; the Internet abounds with arguments both for and against 4K, but our experience with superlative Dell UltraSharp UP3214Q puts us very firmly in the court that says that 4K should be as compulsory as a fundamental right (only for PC users, in this context) and those who argue otherwise, really don’t know what they’re on about.

The Dell UltraSharp UP3214Q is the first IGZO display to grace our test centre and it created a bit of a stir when it arrived. For those not in the know, IGZO stands for Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide, a semi-conducting compound “used in the TFT backplane” of flat-panel displays. Without going into technical details, this semi-conductor allows for a faster transmission of electric current and this matters as it allows manufacturers to build displays with higher pixel densities (or better refresh rates).

Ignoring use case for the moment, the monitor itself performs at par with any IPS panel in its class. As measured by our Spyder 3 calibration too, the contrast ratio came in at a very decent 545:1, the brightness was also good at about 300cd/m2. In fact, the monitor scored quite well in just about all our monitor tests, managing to score well above average in everything.

One area where the monitor does stand out is with regards to build quality. It’s a very large and somewhat heavy monitor, but it’s exceptionally well built and very stable for its 32-inch frame. The Dell UltraSharp UP3214Q's OSD is also the easiest we’ve come across and was a joy to use (the buttons are touch sensitive). All the connectivity ports are neatly stacked on its back panel and hooking or unhooking wires to any of its peripheral ports isn't too cumbersome. One thing we did note is that the top of the monitor tends to get extremely hot but the screen itself doesn’t generate too much heat, which makes for a more pleasant viewing experience.

What we’re basically saying is that this monitor is great and if you’re looking for a 4K monitor for work or pleasure, it's really one of the best ones out there, no questions about that.  If you can afford it, buy it.

However, there are some serious issues with the technology that’s built around 4K that makes using it a bit of a pain if you’re the type who plays a lot of games or generally just switches resolution a lot. Our test rig consisted of an Intel Core i7 3960x, 32GB of DDR3 RAM running at 2400MHz and a GTX760 GPU. This rig was specifically chosen with the GPU as a bottleneck to showcase the effect of 4K on a very capable mid-range GPU. From our tests we observed that many games were playable (at about 25-35fps in games like Bioshock Infinite) but we had to drop settings to medium or lower to hit that holy grail of 60fps. Obviously you need a beefy rig if you’re going to game on this display.

While someone with a more powerful GPU (or multiple GPUs) would be able to work around this, the more important problem we faced was with regards to the way 4K is handled by Windows 8.1, the software on your PC and your GPU drivers. Firstly, you need a DisplayPort 1.2 ready GPU and cable if you want to have your display running at 60Hz (otherwise it defaults to 30Hz, which is painful). Secondly, almost every time your PC goes to sleep, half the panel doesn’t wake up and you’ll either be stuck with half the panel at one resolution and the other half at another, or half the panel switched off and the other, on (an artefact of the 4K manufacturing process).

Either way, it’s mighty frustrating to use a PC like that, especially if you have to spend a couple of minutes resetting your monitor every time your PC goes to sleep. The troubles don’t end here. Considering that most apps are designed for 1080p at most, font and graphics scaling doesn’t happen properly on a lot of third-party apps including uTorrent and even Chrome (till update 36).

Obviously, all the above “issues” are software issues that will be ironed out over time, but at the moment, these issues are a little frustrating to deal with when they pop up. That said, when it comes to doing real work, the true joy of a 4K display needs to be experienced to be believed.

Navy Force Structure and Shipbuilding Plans: Background and Issues for Congress

19
VIEWS

In December 2016, the Navy released a force-structure goal that calls for achieving and maintaining a fleet of 355 ships of certain types and numbers. The 355-ship goal was made U.S. policy by Section 1025 of the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 2810/P.L. 115-91 of December 12, 2017).

The Trump Administration has identified the achievement of a Navy of 355 or more ships within 10 years as a high priority. The Navy states that it is working as well as it can, within a Navy budget top line that is essentially flat in real (i.e., inflation-adjusted terms), toward achieving that goal while also adequately funding other Navy priorities, such as restoring eroded ship readiness and improving fleet lethality.

Navy officials state that while the 355-ship goal is a priority, they want to avoid creating a so-called hollow force, meaning a Navy that has an adequate number of ships but is unable to properly crew, arm, operate, and maintain those ships.

The Navy states that its proposed FY2021 budget requests the procurement of eight new ships, but this figure includes LPD-31, an LPD-17 Flight II amphibious ship that Congress procured (i.e., authorized and appropriated procurement funding for) in FY2020. Excluding this ship, the Navy’s proposed FY2021 budget requests the procurement of seven new ships rather than eight.

A figure of 7 new ships is less than the 11 that the Navy requested for FY2020 (a figure that excludes CVN-81, an aircraft carrier that Congress authorized in FY2019) or the 13 that Congress procured in FY2020 (a figure that again excludes CVN-81, but includes the above-mentioned LPD-31 as well as an LHA amphibious assault ship that Congress also procured in FY2020). The figure of 7 new ships is also less than the 10 ships that the Navy projected under its FY2020 budget submission that it would request for FY2021, and less than the average ship procurement rate that would be needed over the long run, given current ship service lives, to achieve and maintain a 355-ship fleet.

In dollar terms, the Navy is requesting a total of about $19.9 billion for its shipbuilding account for FY2021. This is about $3.9 billion (16.3%) less than the Navy requested for the account for FY2020, about $4.1 billion (17.0%) less than Congress provided for the account for FY2020, and about $3.6 billion (15.3%) less than the $23.5 billion that the Navy projected under its FY2020 budget submission that it would request for the account for FY2021.

The Navy states that its FY2021 five-year (FY2021-FY2025) shipbuilding plan includes 44 new ships, but this figure includes the above-mentioned LPD-31 and LHA amphibious ships that Congress procured in FY2020. Excluding these two ships, the Navy’s FY2021 five-year shipbuilding plan includes 42 new ships, which is 13 less than the 55 that were included in the FY2020 (FY2020-FY2024) five-year plan and 12 less than the 54 that were projected for the period FY2021-FY2025 under the Navy’s FY2020 30-year shipbuilding plan.

The Navy’s 355-ship force-level goal is the result of a Force Structure Assessment (FSA) conducted by the Navy in 2016. A new FSA, referred to as the Integrated Naval FSA (INFSA), is to be published sometime during the spring of 2020. Statements from Department of the Navy (DON) officials suggest that the INFSA could result in a once-in-a-generation change in the Navy’s fleet architecture, meaning the mix of ships that make up the Navy.

DON officials suggest that the INFSA could shift the fleet to a more distributed architecture that includes a reduced proportion of larger ships, an increased proportion of smaller ships, and a newly created category of large unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and large unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Such a change in fleet architecture could alter the mix of ships to be procured for the Navy and the distribution of Navy shipbuilding work among the nation’s shipyards.

Black Americans are still dying of cancer at the highest rates

Black Americans are still dying of cancer at the highest rates

Racial disparities in cancer deaths are shrinking, but communities of color still lack access to screening and treatment.

The U.S. has made significant strides against cancer in the past two decades, with death rates dropping and survivors living longer — but Black Americans are still being left behind.

A report published Wednesday by the American Association for Cancer Research highlights the “glaring” racial disparities in cancer care, including the stark statistic that Black Americans have the highest overall death rate from cancer of any racial or ethnic group in the nation, and have for the past four decades.

“We have without a doubt been doing better with treating cancer as a whole, but we still see significant differences in certain types of cancer and still struggle with closing the gaps in these disparities,” report co-author Dr. John Carpten, chair of the cancer research association’s Minorities in Cancer Research Council, said.

For example, while Black and white women are diagnosed with breast cancer at about the same rate, Black women are 40 percent more likely to die from the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Black men are twice as likely to die of prostate cancer and two and a half times as likely to die from stomach cancer as white men, according to the U.S. Office of Minority Health.

Education and income are the most important social factors related to higher rates of cancer deaths in communities of color, according to the AACR report. More than one-third of cancer deaths among American adults ages 25 to 74 could be prevented by eliminating socioeconomic disparities.

More than 20 percent of Black Americans and 18 percent of Hispanic Americans live below the poverty line, the report found. In addition, nearly 20 percent of Hispanic Americans and 10 percent of Black Americans do not have health insurance.

The treatment of cancer is not set up for individuals who get paid by the hour.

“The treatment of cancer is not set up for individuals who get paid by the hour,” Marissa Howard-McNatt, director of the Breast Care Center at the Wake Forest Baptist Health Center in North Carolina, said, adding that low-income people of color may not be able to miss work even when they suspect something is wrong with their health, let alone for routine screening.

“They may not not be able to afford to take time off to get screened for cancer that they may or may not have,” said Howard-McNatt. “That’s a very hard decision to make, between your health and your income.”

Nearly 20 percent of the racial disparities in colorectal cancer deaths can be attributed to lower screening rates among African Americans, according to the American Cancer Society.

Lack of insurance can also be a barrier to screenings. In 2018, less than 40 percent of women ages 50 to 74 who did not have health insurance had gotten a mammogram in the past two years compared with 75 percent of insured women, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Where a person lives also plays a role in their risk of cancer. People who live in low-income neighborhoods are more likely to be exposed to pollution and have less access to resources that support good health. Air pollution alone accounts for around 5 percent of lung cancer cases, according to the report.

“Where people live matters. Socioeconomic status matters for health,” Dr. Karen Winkfield, a radiation oncologist and the incoming executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance in Nashville, Tennessee, said. “Where people live dictates what resources they have access to. It influences what environmental exposures they have, whether that be lead or asbestos or a dump site, and the food they eat.”

“Socioeconomic injustices and health care inequities are undoubtedly the root of and the foundation of the health disparities we see in the U.S., and we can’t ignore that,” Carpten said. “We can make a lot of progress in our understanding of how cancers manifest in different people, but without addressing those inequalities, these disparities will always exist.”

Gaps in clinical knowledge

There are also huge racial gaps in who participates in clinical trials, which means doctors don’t have a clear understanding of how certain cancers may appear differently in patients of different races.

Clinical research done with predominantly white participants is applied to all patients, regardless of race or ethnicity, even when cancers may respond to treatments tailored in a different way.

A report published in August in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that less than 8 percent of participants in cancer treatment clinical trials were African American, even though they have the same probability of having cancer over the course of their lives as white Americans, according to the American Cancer Society.

Investigators must design research to better understand the biological differences in the way some cancers manifest themselves in different people, Carpten said.

“By teasing out those differences, perhaps we can come up with different ways to diagnose and treat cancer in tailored ways,” said Carpten, noting that precision treatments still aren’t all that precise, because these targeted treatments have largely been designed using white patients. “If we can do that, we can ensure access to cancer treatment innovations across all people,” he said.

According to the report, many of the communities that are disproportionately burdened by cancer are also drastically underrepresented in the U.S. health care and research field.

“We really want there to be programs that make sure that the health care workforce reflects the population to drive both diversity in research topics and to make patients feel comfortable,” Carpten said. “There is a sense of responsibility and purpose when it is your community that is being so disproportionately impacted by these health outcomes.”

But workplace diversity alone isn’t enough, Winkfield said. Participation in cancer research, clinical trials, early detection and prevention starts with education and making sure a person’s needs are met, such as paying for rent and food, so they can afford to take the time to get screened for cancer.

“We need to talk to individuals who are being impacted the most and find out how they want to receive information,” she said. “We can only do so much sitting in a lab with a pipette in our hand. If I can’t get enough black tissue samples because there aren’t enough Black women coming into the clinic, there is a downstream problem.”

How three creators dreamed up multi-million dollar app in the back of an Uber | Daily Mail Online

How a lightbulb moment in the back of an Uber lead to three people creating a multimillion dollar app that’s guaranteed to save you money

  • The entrepreneurs behind Australia's hottest new app met in a Sydney rideshare
  • Their start up, GetReminded, is now on the cusp of huge international success
  • The trio told Daily Mail Australia their startup began with a chance encounter

The creative force behind one of Australia's hottest new apps met each other by accident in an Uber.

David Wareing, Tim Nicholas and Silje Dreyer are the entrepreneurs behind GetReminded - a free digital platform dreamed up in a Sydney rideshare that reminds users when their bills, policies, mobile phone plans and insurance premiums are up for renewal.

According to the trio, the simple idea is saving users thousands of dollars a year, they told Daily Mail Australia.

GetReminded is a free digital platform dreamed up in a Sydney rideshare that reminds users when their bills, policies, mobile phone plans and insurance premiums are up for renewal

It all started when Mr Wareing returned from overseas after spending about a decade working in motor vehicle marketing.

'The holy grail in automotive marketing was knowing when people wanted to change their car,' Mr Wareing said.

'I thought, instead of brands just spraying messages to people all the time, isn't it better to understand customers a little more, so they know what they need and when they need it?'

He had returned to Sydney and was working as an Uber driver when he picked up Mr Nicholas in 2017 - a digital marketing and website development specialist who had the kind of expertise needed to raise money, promote the concept and get the idea of the ground.

But the pair were still one short when it came to technical experience and design capabilities.

Until the day Ms Dreyer showed up in the back of Mr Wareing's Uber.

'I have a Master's in interactive design from the University of Sydney and had been working in the sector for a few years,' she said.

'When I met David I was very skeptical at first, but I was really intrigued and I just thought there might really be something here.

'We talked about the idea and I just had a gut feeling... I also had nothing to lose.'

In July 2017, the business went live.

'We started it with a website only. In the tech world they call it a minimum viable product - just to see what the take up would be,' Mr Nicholas said.

'We discovered very quickly that most people were accessing it on their mobile so we knew we have to build this as an app.

'We build version one of our app in just a few months with seed funding, now we are on version three.'

Australia has been a hotbed of start up success with billion-dollar unicorns like Atlassian, Afterpay, Nearmap, Airwallex and 10x Genomics.

GetReminded already has over 23,000 users in Australia and New Zealand, and last month the company launched in the UK and Ireland.

In the near future, GetReminded plans to expand into the US and other markets after securing more funding to scale up and raise brand awareness.

'There are some calendar apps and reminder services out there but nobody is replicating what we're doing,' Ms Dreyer said.

'What's unique is that it gives you a lot of reminders leading up expiry dates, most apps usually give you a reminder when it's too late and you don't have time to look for a better deal.'

'We are not trying to be a bill paying app, we are not a comparison site, we are not fintech, we are not lending money to people, we are just focused on giving users good consumer help,' Mr Wareing said.

Rajkot sees no respite from Covid-19; RMC chief tests positive
Covid-19
With over 2,100 active cases, Rajkot has 3rd highest number of Covid cases in Gujarat; RMC chief tests positive, too

The rate at which coronavirus cases is rising in Rajkot is alarming. With 2,180 total active cases as of Monday night, Rajkot has the third highest number of coronavirus cases in the State.

The number of daily cases in the city, which is also Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's hometown, has been hovering above 90 for the past three weeks. "Such is the situation in Rajkot that private hospitals are running out of Covid beds for patients," said businessman Brijesh Shah.

As per RMC Opposition leader Vashram Sagathiya, Rajkot death figures given by the State differs from that given by the Corporation. "This figure again does not match figures we get from crematoriums. On Monday, there were 39 deaths in Rajkot. But, State said there were only three," he said.

Meanwhile, Rajkot Collector Remya Mohan tested positive on Tuesday. She is under home quarantine.

As per IMA President Jay Dhirwani, at least 110 doctors have tested positive in Rajkot city. Another 37 doctors in Rajkot Rural have tested positive so far, said CDHO Mitesh Bhanderi.

Climate target ambition must be matched by supportive EU policies, auto makers underline | Automotive World

Climate target ambition must be matched by supportive EU policies, auto makers underline

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) takes note of the ‘2030 Climate Target Plan’ unveiled today by the European Commission

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) takes note of the ‘2030 Climate Target Plan’ unveiled today by the European Commission. The auto industry supports the European Union’s long-term goal of climate neutrality by 2050, and wants to play its part in making Europe the first climate-neutral continent.

“It is clear that the EU strategy needs to be reviewed and adapted periodically to ensure that all parties are on track to meet its objectives,” stated ACEA’s Director General, Eric-Mark Huitema. “However, policy makers need to put in place not only targets but also the required supportive policies for all vehicle types, without which these targets will simply not be achievable.”

These policies include a dense EU-wide network of charging points and re-fuelling stations (with binding targets for member states), coupled with economically-sustainable incentive schemes, so that zero-emission mobility can become an accessible and affordable option for all Europeans. In addition, to support the transition to zero-emission mobility, all energy carriers should be part of a stronger EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) that applies a carbon price at a level that drives real change.

“The higher the climate targets become, the higher and more critical the ambition level of these enabling factors must also be,” Mr Huitema stressed.

As regards targets for CO2 emissions from new passenger cars and vans, the Commission should first ensure that the necessary enabling factors are actually delivered and strengthened, before going back to the drawing board to raise targets that were only set last year.

Huitema: “We recognise the desire to be a global trailblazer when it comes to climate action, but we will need an unprecedented regulatory shift to ensure all the right enabling factors are secured. Until we have a clearer vision on the accompanying policy framework and the impact assessment, it is difficult to predict what a realistic scenario is in terms of future CO2 targets.”

The EU auto industry dedicates a large part of its annual €60.9 billion R&D budget to decarbonisation. Indeed, because of these investments, EU sales of electrically-chargeable cars increased by 110% from 218,083 in 2017 to 458,915 last year. Investment in infrastructure, however, is falling behind this growth. During the same period, the number of charging points for electric cars only grew by 58% for example.

The ambitious targets laid out in today’s Commission proposal will require massive additional investments from the auto industry, at the very time when the industry has been rocked by the coronavirus crisis.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMailTV, Brandi spilled all the intimate details of the secret tryst, revealing how 'sexually aggressive' Denise instigated the affair by demanding to see her breasts before throwing her up against a bathroom wall in a restaurant and kissing her passionately.

The star, once married to Hollywood wild man Charlie Sheen, then lured Brandi into bed by inviting her on set during a movie she was filming with her ex boyfriend Patrick Muldoon.

But Brandi, 47, claims that after they slept together Denise freaked out saying her husband Aaron would kill her if he ever found out - even though she had claimed they had an open relationship.

'I felt she wanted to hit it and quit it. She was very sexually aggressive and once she got what she wanted, she didn't want to know,' explained Brandi.

The current RHOBH season has been roiled by drama after Brandi first revealed the affair on camera, first exclusively revealed by DailyMail.com.

And the blonde star spoke out after Denise has repeatedly denied the affair amid a torrent of headlines about the tryst, branding her comments 'BS'.

Asked for a response to Brandi's slew of accusations, a representative for Denise simply said: 'Not true'.

Brandi says Denise, 49, has even threatened her with legal action, issuing a cease and desist letter in a bid to keep her silent.

'I really didn't think it was going to be as huge as it is. It's literally everywhere,' says Brandi.

'However, I think the denial with Denise has made it a huge deal, especially since it's all over Housewives.

We went into the bathroom and I showed her my boobs and right when I took my shirt down, she just kind of threw me against the wall and started making out with me.

'All I'm interested in is getting the truth out there.'

Brandi first met Denise on September 18, 2018 at Rande Gerber's upscale Café Habana restaurant in Malibu.

Brandi had just left the Celebrity Big Brother House and her agent told her he was taking on Denise as a client and wanted them to meet so Brandi could give her some advice about appearing on RHOBH.

'We went to dinner and Denise is sitting across from me and the whole time she is looking at my boobs,' recalls Brandi.

'Then our agent left because it was getting late for him, but we stayed because we were having a great time, we were hitting it off.

'And then Denise said to me: "Oh my God, does it seem like I've been looking at your boobs all night?" I'm like, "yeah, pretty much".'

Brandi says mom-of-three Denise then asked to see her breasts in the bathroom because the actress was considering getting hers redone by a surgeon.

The pair had been drinking heavily; Denise tequila and Brandi wine.

'We went into the bathroom and I showed her my boobs and right when I took my shirt down, she just kind of threw me against the wall and started making out with me,' recalls Brandi.

Brandi added: 'And I was down for it, I honestly didn't mind. I was like, okay, what are we doing, but this is fun.

'We were drunk and it's not the first time I've made out with a friend or a girl. I was flattered, it was a compliment. She's a beautiful girl. She's Denise Richards.

'We had a good time and then we went back to the table and had more drinks.'

Brandi says Denise then came on heavy.

'She said to me, "Oh my God, I always wanted to f**k the s**t out of you. And I was like, what? 'But I was going with it. I was having a good time.'

The former fashion model reveals the two women went back to the bathroom for a second time and things became even steamier.

'We were just making out, I had jeans on. There was nothing other than like a little bit of ti**y sucking, but it was sexy,' she said.

When the women, by now heavily intoxicated, decided to leave, Brandi said she left her car behind and ordered an Uber for herself but Denise insisted on driving herself home.

'We were both so drunk. I walked her across the street to her car, where the Ralph's parking lot was, and we made out a little bit again in her car and then this car comes driving up and she's like, "Oh my God it's paparazzi, it's paparazzi, get down".

'I'm like, "I think it's my Uber, babe". There was a little paranoia there. And before we left she was like, "Oh my God, I hope that you would never tell anyone about this, my personal life is my personal life. I trust you".

'To me it was not a big deal, two girls getting drunk and making out, but of course I didn't know she was married at this point, she never mentioned Aaron once.'

Brandi said Denise did say she wanted to see her again, however, and it wasn't long before she was bombarding the beauty with texts.

'It was nonstop from her after the first night we met,' recalls Brandi. 'She wanted to finish what she started, that's how I felt.'

But Brandi says she fobbed Denise off with a string of excuses so things wouldn't go too far.

'She was literally texting me every single day. "Oh, I'm in your neighborhood, can I just come over? Can I come over? I need to see you".

'I said, well, "I can meet you for a drink, I can meet you at dinner". I just didn't want to be alone with her, because I felt that she had a lot of dude energy, like she really wanted me.

'I felt almost like it was a guy that wanted to hit it and quit it. Like he wanted to get what he wanted, but this was Denise.

'All I wanted was a new friend that I liked, that was cool and drank. I really was not looking for any kind of sexual partner, I felt like I was running from her.'

Brandi says the two of them didn't really see each other until they shot a scene together for RHOBH in November that year.

All night we talked about sex and how he (Aaron) was okay as long as she was with a girl, she could never be with a guy.

And immediately after filming ended Brandi was given an insight into the alleged open marriage Denise has with husband Aaron.

'After filming we were like, 'let's just go out and party",' Brandi recalls.

'We went back to the scene of the crime Café Habana and her husband Aaron met up with us and we were all getting very hammered.'

Brandi claims it wasn't long before the newly married couple began openly talking about having threesomes with other women.

She also claims her first intimate encounter with Denise was brought up and Aaron was fully aware.

She said: 'They got on the subject of how do they get other women to come into their marriage and into their bed? They asked if I could help them? And I'm like, "um, call Charlie Sheen".

'All night we talked about sex and how he (Aaron) was okay as long as she was with a girl, she could never be with a guy.

'It was an interesting conversation and it just made me feel like, okay, these are very sexual people that are very open.'

At some point in the night Brandi and Denise locked lips and took a photo that was sent to Andy Cohen and later posted on Twitter on June 27 this year.

Brandi says that after that meeting Denise carried on pursuing her over text.

DailyMailTV has seen dozens of text exchanges between the two women which show they had a very close friendship.

'We spoke a lot but I continued to make myself unavailable,' Brandi said.

And it wouldn't be until late April 2019 that the two women would see each other again.

Brandi said she wanted Denise to appear on her podcast, which at the time was her only income, but Denise was out of town filming a movie.

'She was filming with her ex Patrick Muldoon and Denise suggested I come to the set in Mendocino, I was reluctant at first but I knew Denise being on my podcast would do really well, so I agreed, I have to put food on the table.

'I did feel a little bit like it was her way of finally getting me alone, but I knew what I was getting myself into.

'It's not that I didn't like Denise, I just didn't want to have sex with her.'

Brandi flew to Mendocino, a beautiful coastal town in northern California, and stayed in a cottage with Denise at the Mendocino Hotel.

Denise had been filming the Christmas movie My Adventures with Santa in which her and her ex Patrick played husband and wife.

Brandi recalled that after a night of drinking with Denise: 'I was really ready to pass out. And the next thing I know we're making out, she's on top of me and our clothes are off. And yeah, we're going at it, we had sex.' Pictured: Denise showing Brandi the hotel she was at

Brandi admits she bit Denise several in the throes of passion in what she claims was an attempt to put her off sex. 'It's not that I don't think she's a beautiful, attractive woman. I just put myself in a situation that I didn't want to be in,' she explained. Brandi admits she went to Mendocino with her eyes open though, saying: 'I put myself in that situation, so I'm not a victim'

Denise, who had her daughter and her daughter's friend staying with her, had promised Brandi a roll away bed to sleep on but one never materialized.

'When I arrived, I met up with her and Patrick and we all hit it off and were having a great time,' she said.

'Patrick and I were just being silly and we started kissing. I think in a weird way, I was making out with him just to put off having to make out with Denise.'

Denise went to bed early to phone her husband so when Brandi came to bed she was already asleep.

The following day, Denise went off to film and Brandi looked around Mendocino with her daughter and friend.

After Denise and Patrick finished on set the trio started drinking and Brandi recorded a podcast with Patrick in his hotel room.

'I thought it was great. We were all wildly drunk, and Patrick said, "so did you hook up with Denise last night after you left me?"

'And I said, no, what are you talking about? But he said, "Brandi, I dated the girl for five years, I know she likes girls".

'That night we all got even more drunk than the night before and went back to Denise's cottage. 'The girls were asleep in their room.

'Patrick went back to his room and Denise and I went upstairs.

'I was really ready to pass out. And the next thing I know we're making out, she's on top of me and our clothes are off. And yeah, we're going at it, we had sex.

'But Denise said to me, "I don't understand, you seem like you're not into it". And I wasn't, I just didn't want to do it.'

But the morning after they slept together she was shocked by Denise's reaction. 'She was like, "wow, you left marks all over my body and Aaron, if he ever finds out, he's gonna kill me. He can never find out". I literally did a double take and I was silent for a few minutes. I am not good with secrets. They make me uncomfortable.'  Wow, you left marks all over my body and Aaron, if he ever finds out, he's gonna kill me. He can never find out.

'And as far as I was aware Aaron was one million per cent aware that Denise and I made out the first night we met because we talked about it.

'He also knew I was going to Mendocino and I was sleeping in the same bed as her, so I was shocked by what she was saying.'

That day Brandi, Denise, Patrick and the two girls went horseback riding and Brandi processed what had happened.

When she got home she also told her closest friends what went down.

'You know, the conclusion I came to was that Aaron wouldn't care less about it but this was her way of having something over me and making sure I never talk about it to anyone else,' she said.

Brandi, who has two teenage boys with her ex-husband Eddie Cibrian, says following that weekend she did not see Denise for more than six months because she made herself 'unavailable'.

'The first time I saw her was on Housewives in November and I was so nervous because I didn't know whether to be like, "screw you" or to shut up and not let anyone know because I was ashamed,' she said.

'And I thought people were going to judge me - you're a cheater, you're sleeping with a married woman. And so I had this weight on my shoulders.'

When rumors of her affair with Brandi first circulated earlier this year Denise bluntly denied them, telling Entertainment Tonight: 'I was very much caught off guard, and the subject matter that seems to be in all the tabloids of late is - I think it's kind of disgusting that they even talk about it'

And it was after a drunken sleep over at Brandi's close friend and RHOBH veteran star Kim Richards that the truth came out.

Brandi said she confided in Kim about the affair because she felt safe.

But Kim knew the revelation was a bombshell for the show so convinced her to say something.

Brandi dropped the bombshell news at a sit-down dinner with the rest of the RHOBH cast.

'I f***ed her, woke up the next morning [and] she said, "Aaron can never know this. He'll kill me",' Brandi told Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave, Lisa Rina and Erika Girardi on the show — seemingly before Denise's arrival.

The women were all in shock following the reveal.

In an episode aired in June this year the housewives later confront Denise in Rome about the alleged affair, to which she tearfully responds: 'What the f***?'

'That is not true,' says Denise. Denise's rep also denied the affair to multiple media outlets who followed up on the story at the time.

Later in the show some of the RHOBH cast struggled to believe Brandi's claims, but when she produced a series of text messages proving her and Denise were close most of the women began to back her.

'I think as far as Kyle, Kim, Lisa Rina and Erika go, they know I'm a straight shooter. They know I'm not going to make anything up,' says Brandi.

'Dorit, I can't even speak about, but I said, listen, here you go, look at all of the messages please.

'And they were like, okay, Denise is 100 percent lying. And it really did feel like, "Oh my gosh, thank God somebody believes me".

Brandi said: 'I was super shocked when Denise said that she was leaving the show. She's a strong woman. She said she wanted closure all year, so sit down with me and get closure. 'I think that she just needs more of a narrative that she can control. And you know what, maybe she's just not built for reality television.' She added: 'I just want to know why she made up all the lies.'

'But that's something they choose to, and I've had worse things said so I can rise above it. I have a very solid marriage and my husband and I, we just rise above it. People will say what they'll say, and in the big picture, we can't worry about that stuff.'

Denise was asked whether she had told Aaron about the claims Brandi made, and Denise said 'yes.'

'Aaron and I don't have any secrets from each other, and if I did come home and say, ''Hey, I slept with Brandi,'' he would be like, ''How come I wasn't invited?'',' she emphasized.

Verdict

The Vivo Y55s is a depandable smartphone, and it'll reach more people, being sold offline. It's good to know that offline buyers have a dependable phone to buy, but in the market at large, the Y55s is simply not up to its competition. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 costs about the same and is faster, with better battery life and faster performance. On the other hand, the Moto G5 Plus costs much more, but has a vastly better camera, faster performance and better battery life too. The Vivo Y55s is appreciable, but not what we would recommend.

Vivo Y55S detailed review

The performance gap between a sub-15K smartphone and a flagship device is thinning with each passing year. However, there are often devices that don’t look powerful on paper, but still perform well. The Vivo Y55s is a good example of the same. The device looks, feels and functions like a budget smartphone and makes one wonder whether benchmarks are really the proof of performance.

Build and Design
Vivo's smartphones have resembled Apple's iPhones in the past, and so does this one. However, that also means its a good looking phone, or at least that's what I think. The metal back feels nice and the rounded edges help provide comfortable grip. A thin metal strip runs around the phone, separating the front from the metal back, adding an unique feel to a phone that otherwise looks pretty much like all of Vivo's other devices. Both the power key and volume rocker are on the right, you get a dual SIM card slot on the left and a dedicated microSD slot on the top.

The build quality, on the other hand, is pretty much the industry average for budget smartphones. I've travelled with this in my pocket and inadvertently put my keys and coins in the same pocket, but the Vivo Y55s came out scratch free. Now, I don't recommend that you do this, but it's good to escape unscathed. At least the metal back seems resistant to scratches, while tempered glass comes installed on the display out-of-the-box.

Display and UI
Displays on budget devices have evolved over the years, but there are many that lack quality. The Vivo Y55s is amongst the former, though. Colour saturation and viewing angles are good and at par with the likes of Honor 6X and Coolpad Cool 1. Touch response is also decent and I didn't find the experience lacking in any way.

That said, it isn't without flaws. I definitely felt the low pixel density on the display, as the 5.2-inch panel only has 720p resolution. Moreover, it's quite dim. In fact, at 220 lux luminance, it's one of the dimmest panels I have seen on any device. This affects sunlight visibility too, which could have been better.

Vivo has not changed the UI from what we saw on the V5 Plus some months back. In fact, it adheres to the same iOS-themed interface it has been using since launch. The UI is more refined now, though, and doesn't tax the memory as much, which in a way is a good thing. It caters all the features you would expect from a Chinese UI, including, but not limited to, themes, a phone manager, a third party app store (V-App store), a pre-installed keyboard, and more. There are a few gesture-based features, such as smart split that basically is a split screen mode, and a dedicated one handed-mode that shrinks the UI to be used in one hand.

Performance
Setting aside the iOS-like UI, the phone really surprises with its performance. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC and bundled with 3GB of RAM, the phone does a fine job, providing dependable experience. Using it as a daily driver with all the basic apps, including Facebook, Whatsapp, Youtube, Gmail, Maps, Wynk, Pocket, Chrome and more, I had no issues with performance. Even when I tested games like Asphalt 8 and Marvel’s Contest of Champions, the phone was able to provide stable frame rates of 29 fps, which is reasonable for the price. However, synthetic benchmarks don't really reflect the same.

Here's the thing though. While this kind of performance is good, it's available at much cheaper prices as well. At Rs. 12,490, there are better performers out there. The Vivo Y55s isn't meant for those who multitask a lot, neither is it meant for avid gamers. It does the job, but only reasonably so. Given that you can get more, it's tough to justify the Snapdragon 425 and HD display.

During gaming and even while shooting video (it can do FHD at best), the phone does heat up. I recorded max temperatures of about 41 degree celsius under ideal outdoor conditions, in the middle of the day. This, though, may be tougher to manage during the summers.

As for the audio, the bottom firing speaker isn't the best. It is loud enough to be heard in on roads, but you'd want headphones for listening to music. It's not the best for calling, either. The Vivo Y55s often dropped connections in areas where most other phones were performing well, while on the same network. For call quality, the earpiece volume is lower than most phones.

Battery
This brings us to the battery, which is just good enough for a work-day’s worth of usage. The phone lasted 5 hours and 31 minutes on the PCMark Work 2.0 Battery Test, which is definitely not in the Redmi Note 4 territory, but not bad either. The 2730mAh battery seems well optimised as well and there are no worrisome drops even if you are playing video games, recordings videos or just using navigation. In my test period, I did not find the battery life insufficient on a day-to-day basis, even with half an hour of gaming and at least an hour of music streaming.

Camera
The camera, however, is a hit or miss. Photos shot in bright outdoor conditions by the 8MP rear camera produce sharp colours that are noticeably oversaturated, along with soft details. The sharpness levels are fairly decent, but object edges are compromised because of the lack of fine details. Most photographs tend to produce noise, which still remain limited in brightly lit conditions.

Colour details are fairly decent for its price, but the dynamic range is not exemplary. Things change for the worse as the light diminishes, with photographs getting expectedly noisier and more pixelated details. The camera spikes ISO to high levels which leads to the soft noise that mars details, and in all of this, the focusing is also slower than other phones in contention.

The Vivo Y55s can shoot 1080p videos with autofocus, which for the most part, looks good. In addition, there are slow motion and time-lapse modes as well, which work as intended.

The front-facing camera is only average at best, and the beauty mode noticeably softens skin tones, that we saw on the Vivo V5 lineup.

Bottomline
The Vivo Y55s is in many ways is a good budget device. It ignored the specs war, but manages to do most things right. It looks good, performs well, has a functional UI, along with a day's worth of battery life. A good camera would have completed the package, but I guess you still can't have everything on a budget. However, there are far better smartphones available in this price range. For example, the Moto G5 Plus may be more expensive, but it is much faster and has a vastly better camera. On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can do everything the Vivo V5 can, but better. It is also noticeably faster, making the V5's optimised performance look weak. While the Snapdragon 425 has been used well here, the 625s and 650s in this price range are just too fast to overcome with simple software optimisations.

The Vivo Y55s will reach more, being sold offline, and it's good to know that they have a dependable phone for themselves. However, in the market at large, this phone pales in comparison to its competitors.
