Shionogi's Gram-negative antibiotic launches in the UK

Novel antibiotic is indicated for use against Gram-negative bacterial infections

Shionogi’s new antibiotic Fetcroja is now available for use in the UK for the treatment of infections caused by aerobic Gram-negative bacteria in adults.

The launch of Shionogi's Fetcroja (cefiderocol) in the UK is its first after the drug gained European Commission approval earlier this year, and is the first treatment which protects against all Gram-negative pathogens considered to be of 'critical priority' by the World Health Organization.

This includes carbapenem-resistant strains of Enterobacterales, P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii, all of which have been highlighted as the top priority in the research and development of new antibiotics.

Shionogi’s novel antibiotic is designed to use the bacteria’s own iron uptake system to gain entry into the cell and inhibit cell wall synthesis.

Jonathon Osborne, General Manager of Shionogi UK, said: “Fetcroja can now be used to treat some of the most life-threatening infections in patients for whom there are limited or no alternative treatment options.”

The use of Fectroja in a range of infections is supported by data from three clinical studies, APEKS-cUTI, APEKS-NP, and CREDIBLE-CR. In these studies, the drug demonstrated efficacy against complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and blood stream infections (BSI).

In the UK, over 5,000 deaths per year are attributed to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with over 25,000 deaths per year attributed to AMR in the EU. AMR is a major health burden wherein bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites become resistant to a range of antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals.

In the US, Shionogi’s drug is approved under the name Fetroja for the treatment of adult patients with cUTI who have limited or no alternative treatment options.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Fetroja was based on results from the APEKS-cUTI study, in which the novel antibiotic demonstrated significantly higher response rates compared to the older antibiotic imipenem/cilastatin.

In July, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) raised nearly $1bn to support clinical research into new antibiotics in an effort to tackle AMR.

By 2050 experts predict that, each year, antibiotic resistance could result in the deaths of ten million people worldwide if no action is taken, resulting in a drop in global economic output of $100 trillion.

The AMR Action Fund was created to bring two to four new antibiotics to patients by 2030, a collaborative effort made possible by the IFPMA, along with the European Investment Bank (EIB), Wellcome Trust and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Investment to ensure promising antibacterial treatments successfully move through to market is a critical step in tackling AMR,” said Haileyesus Getahun, director of the Department of Global Coordination and Partnership on AMR at WHO.

“WHO stands ready to support the AMR Action Fund in its focus on public health priorities and innovative new antibacterial treatments,” she added.

Automatic Pani Puri Machine? Twitter Loves This 'Jugaad'

Twitter is all for this automatic pani puri machine.

The demand for gadgets that reduce contact between people has soared during the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps that is why Twitter is fascinated with a pani puri vending machine that minimises contact between the seller and the customer. Pani puri, puchka, golgappa or pani batasha is a beloved street food. However, with no-contact and social distancing being the new normal, many had been avoiding this snack which is usually assembled at the spot and served, rather than delivered home.

This vending machine may just be the answer to those challenges.

IAS officer Awanish Sharan took to the microblogging platform on Tuesday to share a video of a panipuri shop in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, which has deployed the machine to dispense flavoured water automatically.

The video, filmed at the establishment which is aptly named 'Touch Me Not Pani Puri', shows a customer using the vending machine to sample different flavours of water - garlic, khatta meetha and dhaniya pudina. The machine uses sensors to dispense the flavoured water. Mr Sharan praised it as an amazing "jugaad" or hack in his tweet.

"Automatic Panipuri in Telibandha Raipur," he wrote in Hindi. "Awesome jugaad," he added. Watch the video below:

Since being posted on Twitter a day ago, the clip has garnered 24,000 views and dozens of impressed comments.

"Very nice, will surely visit this pani puri wala," wrote one person in the comments section. "Superb idea," another remarked.

This is not the first innovation that aims to reduce contact between pani puri sellers and their customers. A pani puri vending machine had also gone viral on social media recently.

Could VR help universities teach students? - BBC News

Could VR help universities teach students?

Universities are preparing to reopen but not all teaching will be in-person. The Covid-19 pandemic means that remote learning will also play a pivotal part in education.

BBC Click's Lara Lewington took a trip to a university science department, currently devoid of students, to see how virtual labs could change science education as we know it.

The virtual reality (VR) labs provide a safe place for experiments that may be difficult to do in the flesh - and offer universities who could not afford the kit, the same opportunities to experiment.

Amazon seeks to create a new online shopping portal with top brands and upgraded technology

Highlights
  • Luxury Stores will operate on an invitation-only basis for Prime members
  • Within the Amazon app the new portal will offer improved graphics
  • It will allow brands to sell as a "store within a store"

Amazon unveiled plans Tuesday for a new online luxury "shopping experience" that will seek to connect well-heeled consumers and high-end brands.

The first partner for the new online "Luxury Stores" is Oscar de la Renta, the US fashion house that will show its 2020 collections, with more brands expected in the coming weeks, according to an Amazon statement.

The move is not Amazon's first foray into luxury goods but seeks to create a new online shopping portal with top brands and upgraded technology offering 360-degree views for shoppers.

Luxury Stores will operate on an invitation-only basis for Amazon Prime members.

Within the Amazon app, the new portal will offer improved graphics and visualisation, and allow brands to sell as a "store within a store," controlling their own inventory, selection and pricing.

"We are always listening to and learning from our customers, and we are inspired by feedback from Prime members who want the ability to shop their favorite luxury brands in Amazon's store," said Christine Beauchamp, president of Amazon Fashion.

"We are excited to offer luxury brands the services and technology to build an inspiring, elevated customer experience."

The move comes with Amazon having boosted online sales in many sectors in recent months during the coronavirus pandemic, which has closed many physical stores and kept consumers cautious about going out to shop.
