Lenovo Legion Y520 detailed review

If you’ve been following Digit for long, you may know that the Lenovo Y700 won our Zero1 award for “Best Mainstream Gaming Laptop” in 2016. This year the company is pushing the envelope a little further, with the Legion Y520, which is the replacement for the last year's machine. The design has been tweaked, the guts have been upgraded, weight and dimensions lowered, and the machine is now part of Lenovo's Legion sub-brand. On paper, it looks quite interesting and somewhat similar to the Dell inspiron 7567 I reviewed recently, which means there is plenty of 1080p performance to exploit. Exploit I did, the Legion Y520 has been a good gaming partner in the past two weeks. But not everything is up to the mark either.

Tech specs of our test machine:

Display: 15.6-inch, 1080P, IPS Panel

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ

RAM: 16GB GB

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

Storage 1: 128GB Samsung NVMe SSD

Storage 2: 1TB Seagate 5400RPM

Battery: 45 Wr

Price: Rs. 1,05,101

Design and Build: New and refined

Like its predecessor, the Legion Y520 continues the red-and-black gaming theme. It’s made primarily of plastic, but it is a sturdy machine and easily comparable to entry level Thinkpads. The use of red accents in places gives the machine a more attractive look, and the angular front lip makes it distinctive among a horde of rectangular designs. The orange exhaust at the back and the shoulder mounted speakers not only look appealing, but enhance the aesthetics too.

The Y520 uses a similar middle mounted single-hinge mechanism as the Dell Inspiron 7567 gaming, but here the flex in the display is noticeably lesser, albeit not completely missing. The keyboard deck offers ample space for both hands and the use of matte-ish paint feels good. The laptop is fairly thin and has amply rounded edges, making it easier to reach the keyboard and use it for a longer period.

I/O: All you need

I am pretty satisfied with the I/O selection on the Legion Y520, as it covers all the basics. On the left, you get a USB 2.0 port, a Gigabit ethernet jack, microphone/headphone combo and the proprietary power port taken directly from the Thinkpad lineup. On the right, you have two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, a USB 3.0 Type-C port and an HDMI out.

At this point, I should say that the laptop misses out on a Thunderbolt port, but limited compatibility of third party graphic amplifiers and the lack of 4K gaming performance on the NVIDIA 1050 Ti makes it a moot point. That being said, I would have preferred a third USB 3.0 port with fast charging capabilities.

Display: Good not great

While the 4K capabilities of the 1050 Ti are limited to video playback and some non-graphic intensive games, it does justice to the 1080p display here. The matte 15.6-inch panel, is one of the best I have seen in the category, although it is not as bright as I hoped. Producing 260 lux at the centre, it is definitely better in terms of quality and viewing angles than the Dell Inspiron 7567 and most other laptops, but it leaves me wanting for more. Colour reproduction is decent, but as long as you are not using this machine for Photoshop, it will serve you well.

Keyboard and touchpad: Good enough
The Lenovo Legion Y520 features a similar island style keyboard we have seen from the company in the past. It has large keys, is quite tactile and offers good feedback. The red backlighting on it matches the whole gaming theme of the laptop. Moreover, this time it uses a two step backlighting, which means it has two intensity settings. The addition of dedicated screen record button is also appreciated.

The synaptics touchpad is also quite good and responsive. Compared to the Dell, it certainly feels more smooth, but the precision is almost at par. The two cursor keys are glossy and somewhat raised, which may give the appearance that they might have more depth, but in reality the depression is quite small and both buttons are a little stiff to press.

Performance: At par with competition

The Lenovo Legion Y520 packs a similar hardware setup as the Dell Inspiron 7567 Gaming and the performance is pretty much at par as well. The Intel Core i7-7700HQ is a good performer through and through and offers unthrottled performance whether you are converting a video or playing rigorous games. It was really impressive to see the smallest GTX GPU from Nvidia putting out more than 65fps consistently on Doom, running at Ultra settings.

Graphic intensive titles like Battlefield 1 maintained more than 45fps at ultra settings with occasional screen tearing. I did get better frame rates once I dialled down the graphics quality to high, producing more than 50fps easily. Less graphic intensive tiles like Dota 2 ran comfortably, at over 120fps on ultra settings.

While the gaming performance is fine, I faced an odd issue which prompted me to connect an external keyboard. The thing is, the Lenovo Y520 locks the Windows key when in game, which is actually a good thing, but if you press it accidentally, the keyboard occasionally locks itself in (Windows key + X) format. This means, after you accidently pressed the Windows key, pressing just Q opens Cortana, or if you press E for instance, a new explorer window will open, and so on. It happened to me during Dota 2 and I can tell you it was way more infuriating than the slight heating issue the machine has.

Speaking of heating, I found traces on the right side of the keyboard and felt it only if while gaming in a non-airconditioned room. It is not uncomfortable, nor does it affect performance in any way, but it is there and your palms are bound to get sweaty at least.

The 16GB of RAM on our test machine coped up well on the variety of workloads we threw at it. Moreover, the 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD storage solution is one of the fastest amongst its peers. Although, I would have preferred a 256GB SSD on this higher variant of the Y520.

Audio quality via the two shoulder mounted speakers is also nothing short of amazing and while audiophiles won’t agree with me, the machine does a really good job for its price. There’s little bass to speak of, but it doesn’t seem like laptop makers will ever get that right. Still, the speakers try to keep things immersive when you’re gaming, but they’re nothing worth writing home about. They are loud though.

Battery Life: Just Enough

As for the battery, the Dell Inspiron 7567 Gaming has set up a new benchmark, which is tough to outperform. The Lenovo Legion Y520 tries, but manages only half of what the Inspiron achieved on the battery test. It lasts for two hours and two minutes on our battery test. You can game on the go, without the GPU and processor being throttled, but just for about an hour or so. Video playback time is still good and you can finish a movie or two on a single charge.

Bottomline

The Lenovo Legion Y520 is a good gaming laptop, with a very severe issue. Although the Windows key issue is not persistent, if you look past that, the design looks good, build is sturdy and performance is impressive. In addition, battery life is dependable and having an IPS display certainly helps enhance the visual experience.

On the other hand, I believe it would have been a more complete package, with a larger SSD option. Overall, I would easily recommend this machine to whomsoever is looking to invest on a sub-one-lakh laptop, capable of 1080p gaming.

Oppo Reno4 Pro detailed review

For a performance enthusiast or a gamer, the Reno4 Pro is easy to write off looking at the spec sheet. But for the general user, the Reno4 Pro may still offer a few compelling features, enough to make it a smartphone of choice, provided you have the budget for this smartphone. The Reno4 Pro is rather expensive for the core hardware under the hood, but then, it’s not as much about the specs than it is the experience that makes a smartphone worthy of recommending. Is the Reno4 Pro worth buying? We find out —

Performance

The Oppo Reno4 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, the same chipset that powers a bunch of smartphones under Rs 20,000, and can arguably be called a popular mid-range chipset. The price of the smartphone, however, is in the high-end flagship territory. It’s hard to justify that choice for power users, but for someone looking for an affordable good-looking smartphone for the basics, the Reno4 Pro should work just fine. Options like the OnePlus Nord, Realme X3 SuperZoom and the iQOO 3 outshine the Reno4 Pro in nearly every way except for the design, may be. But that's subjective. However, the gap in performance is not something one would really know unless they're constantly switching between apps, or gaming or running benchmarks.

The benchmark results clearly state how far behind the Reno4 Pro really is, as compared to its peers in this price range.

The performance gap that we see on benchmarks is barely noticeable in daily use though. Of course, it’s not the butter smooth experience you get from a Snapdragon 855 or an 865 processor, but it’s not easy for an average user to gauge that. I picked up the Reno4 Pro after using the OnePlus Nord for a week, and while the usual operations seemed just as smooth, minor things like a small delay in launching apps, or switching cameras, or unlocking the screen became evident. Things that won’t really bother the vanilla smartphone user, habitual to mid-range performance.

The Reno4 Pro isn’t going to impress gamers either. The Snapdragon 720G can only run the popular games with medium graphics. We played a few rounds of PUBG Mobile and COD: Mobile and neither of them allowed the Reno4 Pro to run at the highest graphics settings. However, CoD Mobile did manage to hit 60 FPS like we have noted in the Realme 6 Pro and the Redmi Note 9 Pro, both of which run the game at 60 FPS as well. Most likely, the Adreno 618 gets maxed out running games at low graphics, because CPU usage is just around 20 per cent during gaming.

PUBG Mobile also only hit 30 FPS on GameBench, and that too at HD graphics. So the draw distance, textures, and other details are far lesser than smartphones the Reno4 Pro competes with. Having said that, the gameplay on both PUBG Mobile and COD: Mobile is quite smooth, but no perceivable frame drops. The touch response are nothing like the flagships, and the 90Hz screen doesn’t really come into play here, but you do get a dedicated gaming mode where you can set individual profiles for each games, and enable what Oppo calls “Tournament Mode” which apparently boosts the performance.

Software

Part of what makes this mid-range smartphone usable enough, is the ColorOS 7 software. Oppo smartphones were not known for smooth, minimalist UI until recently with the rollout of ColorOS 7 —  One which manages to offer both personalisation and minimalism in the Reno4 Pro. You can choose how your icons will look, the wallpaper and app layout and more from the Settings, and even apply various pre-built themes available in the theme store. There’s also a capable dark mode and a nifty always-on display as well with cool clock styles.

Annoyingly enough, the Reno4 Pro still has some of the apps that was banned by the Indian Government. It’s still harmless because they don’t work and can be uninstalled.  What irked me was the fact that despite paying Rs 34,999, there isn’t anything special in the software to write about. Almost all the features are the same as what you’d get any other Oppo smartphone priced much less.

Camera

The Reno series started off with a nicely tuned camera in the Reno 10X Zoom, but over the past few iterations, the camera has been quite disappointing. The Reno4 Pro’s quad camera setup also evoked the same feeling. The 48+8+2+2 MP setup is common for mid-range smartphones priced under Rs 20,000, and it's natural to expect some level of differentiation to motivate the buyer to consider paying more. The camera is how most OEMs differentiate, but not the Reno4 Pro. It’s performance is strictly average, and a far cry from the images the Reno 10X Zoom took.

Daylight

Oppo Reno4 Pro vs Competition:

Shot on Oppo Reno4 Pro

Shot on iQOO 3 5G

In the daytime, the Reno4 Pro takes photos with good colours, and the right amount of saturation and vibrance. The dynamic range is on the lower side, and so is the details when compared against images taken from phones like the iQOO 3.

Lowlight

Oppo Reno4 Pro vs Competition:

Shot on Oppo Reno4 Pro

Shot on iQOO 3 5G

The Reno4 Pro comes with a Night Mode which takes a good few seconds to take a low-light photo. The result is an image that looks brighter, but doesn’t have much details when you zoom in.

Portraits

The portrait mode algorithm does the usual beautifying enhancements which smoothens the skin and makes faces appear fairer. The subject separation is accurate, however, and you get a sharp image with lots of filters to experiment with.

Macro

Shot on Oppo Reno4 Pro

Shot on iQOO 3 5G

The 2MP macro is best left unused. Yes, you can go close to a subject up to 4cm, but the colour appear completely faded, and there’s no details whatsoever. The iQOO 3 beats the Reno4 Pro to the punch using a software-induced macro mode.

Videos

The video capabilities of the Reno4 Pro is limited to 4K at 30 FPS, and while the phone manages to maintain focus, the quality of videos are much sharper in smartphones like the iQOO 3 priced the same. The light weight of the phone does help in keeping the phone stable though, and there’s a software-assisted Ultra Steady mode, which is quite handy.

Battery

Here’s where things get interesting. While the Reno4 Pro is strictly average in performance and camera, it sure does last long. And even when it eventually dies, it comes right back up in less than 15 minutes of charging. It has the same 65W fast charger that the Realme X50 Pro already offers, and that’s quite a game changer on its own, even though this feature alone doesn’t justify the price you have to pay. The power draw is quite controlled thanks to the Snapdragon 720G largely, and Oppo’s own resource management algorithms working in the background. The latter might become an annoyance if you switch between apps a lot, because in my case, I had the BatteryLog app running to log the battery drain, and it kept dying every few hours.

Design and Display

What really makes the Reno4 Pro compelling to consider is the design. The smartphone isn’t the most powerful, but it sure does look fantastic. That’s definitely a trait the Reno4 Pro has borrowed from the Reno 10X Zoom. The first thing you’ll notice picking up the phone is it's incredibly light weight and the frosted matte finish. In the way it feels in hand, the Reno4 Pro’s design is a lot like the special edition Realme X series, the ones named Onion and Garlic for some reason.

What works in case of the Reno4 Pro is the feather-light weight and the slim profile. It’s just 7.7mm thick and rocks a curved AMOLED display that blends in with the plastic body along the edges. As a result, the Reno4 Pro can be easily used one-handed. It’s really ergonomic, doesn’t slip and doesn’t attract the ugly smudges and fingerprints.

As for the display itself, it’s decent for the usual tasks but lacks features like HDR support for Netflix, and other streaming apps like its rivals offer. The 6.5-inch AMOLED panel is still HDR-rated though, and supports DCI-P3 colours in the apps and UI. There’s also the OSIE Vision Effect that’s present in nearly every Realme and Oppo smartphones. Turning it on adds a warm tinge to the screen when a video is playing. The brightness levels are ideal for indoor usage. Using it under direct sunlight will cause colours to fade and make reading text difficult.

Bottomline

Overall, the Oppo Reno4 Pro is a strictly average smartphone that looks good, and charges in an instant. The design and the battery life are the only two things that somewhat justifies the price tag, but without the performance to back it up, the Reno4 Pro feels like a half-done job. It feels like Oppo started off with making a premium smartphone —  it got the outer shell ready, but then pivoted to making a mid-range smartphone. As a result, the Reno4 Pro can be easily mistaken as a high-performing smartphone with premium camera performance, but in reality, it’s just average.

Buy the Reno4 Pro if all you want from a smartphone is an ergonomic design and hyper-fast charging. For everything else, there are better alternatives like the OnePlus Nord, iQOO 3 and the Realme X3 SuperZoom.

More Than 60 LGBT, Intersex People Killed In Colombia In First Eight Months Of 2020

BOGOTA: At least 63 members of Colombia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community were killed in the first eight months of this year, the Andean country’s human rights ombudsman said on Tuesday, while other acts of violence also increased.

Among those killed were 17 transgender women, 12 gay men, six lesbian women and one transgender man, as well as others whose sexual orientation and gender identity could not be specified, although they belonged to the LGBT and intersex community, the organization said.

Intersex refers to people who have reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not conform to typical definitions of male or female.

The ombudsman, an independent organization that promotes human rights in Colombia, did not immediately include comparative figures from the same period in 2019 as collection of the information started this year.

From January to August, the organization reported 388 cases of violence against LGBT and intersex people, mostly in the form of physical and psychological aggressions, up from 309 cases in the whole of last year.

“During the pandemic prejudice and discrimination have been exacerbated while obstacles to accessing justice in the receiving of complaints increased,” the ombudsman said in a statement.

The organization, which also cited 36 cases of aggression by police officers, called on the government to develop a concrete action plan to stop violence due to prejudice and fight institutional discrimination that affects this community in all areas and spaces.

Indian-American Pleads Guilty In USD 17-Million Bank Fraud

Rajendra Kankariya faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of USD 1 million.

Washington:

An Indian-American president of a now-defunct New Jersey-based marble and granite wholesaler has admitted his role in scheming to defraud a bank in connection with a USD 17 million secured line of credit, a US Attorney has said.

Rajendra Kankariya, 61, pleaded guilty by video conference before US District Judge Susan D. Wigenton to committing wire fraud affecting a financial institution.

He faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of USD 1 million. Kankariya is scheduled to be sentenced on January 18.

According to court documents, from March 2016 through March 2018, Kankariya, the president and part owner of Lotus Exim International Inc, conspired with other LEI employees to obtain from the bank a USD17 million line of credit by fraudulent means.

The bank extended the line of credit believing it to have been secured in part by LEI's accounts receivable. In reality, Kankariya and his conspirators fabricated or inflated many of the accounts receivable, ultimately leading to LEI defaulting on the line of credit, prosecutors alleged.

To conceal the lack of sufficient collateral, LEI employees, with the knowledge and approval of Kankariya, created fake email addresses on behalf of LEI's customers so they could pose as them and answer the bank''s and outside auditor''s inquiries about the accounts receivable.

The scheme involved numerous fraudulent accounts receivable where the outstanding balances were either inflated or entirely fabricated.

The scheme caused the bank losses of about USD 17 million, a statement issued by US Attorney Craig Carpenito said.

Brutal car parking note sees feud erupt over affluent and working class suburbs  | Daily Mail Online

'Total and utter snobbery': Brutal note left on a car parked on a front lawn sparks class war between wealthy and working class suburbs

  • A homeowner has been accused of 'utter snobbery' over a car parking note
  • The resident from Claremont, in west Perth, left the message on a stranger's car
  • It scolded the driver for parking their car on the homeowner's front lawn
  • The harsh statement prompted a digital turf war about Perth's affluent suburbs

A rude note left on a parked car has sparked a heated debate about snobby suburbs and whether it's appropriate to park on a front lawn.

A homeowner from Claremont, an affluent suburb in west Perth, has come under fire for leaving the 'very rude' and 'snobbish' message on a car parked on their lawn.

The note triggered a social media firestorm for taking aim at Balga, a suburb 12kms north of Perth's CBD, when it was shared to social media on Monday.

'This is not Balga. Park in the street, not on the lawn. Don't park here again,' the message read.

Ogun workers strike: You’re wicked, insensitive – PDP tells Abiodun govt

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has described the government of Governor Dapo Abiodun as “wicked” and “insensitive” for reportedly “refusing to accede to the legitimate demands of workers in the state, despite several demands,” from the Organized Labour leaders.

DAILY POST reports that workers in Ogun State have embarked on a seven-day warning strike over Gov. Abiodun’s refusal to pay their N30,000 minimum wage and other entitlements.

The Ogun PDP said it is satisfied with the peaceful conduct adopted by the leadership of the Organized Labour in pressing home its demands.

Akinloye Bankole, the Publicity Secretary of the party in Ogun State stated that, “The declaration of a week warning strike, following the insensitivity of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state is a proof that the leadership of the Organized Labour and workers are true compatriots.”

Bankole, in a statement he made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday, expressed optimism that, “the government will come to its senses within the period of the warning strike.”

“The warning strike, we are hoping will not result to a full scale indefinite strike action as contained in a newsletter signed by the Organised Labour if the government can wake up from its slumber and see the welfare of its workers as germane and crucial in the interest of the development of our dear State,” he said.

He recalled that the PDP issued a release a few weeks ago, calling on the ruling government to show empathy and compassion to the mass of government workers by implementing the minimum wage, remitting their contributory deductions and paying all their outstanding allowances and other entitlements.

He, however, said, “As it is the usual character of Gov. Dapo Abiodun-led government not to hearken to warnings and advice, it is saddening to note that such patriotic intervention from a responsible party playing its role as a strong opposition party fell on deaf ears.

“Without any shade of doubts, Ogun workers and indeed, the general public by extension, now know that cautions and advice relating to issues that bother on workers’ welfare and core issues of progressive governance have become matters of inconvenience to the APC ruling government.

“Owing to our irreducible belief that no worker should be treated with indignity, our great party is left with no other option than to identify with the Ogun workers whose genuine discussion with the representatives of the government ended in deadlock, as the wicked government completely refused to accede to the legitimate demands of the workers despite several concessions made by the Organized Labour leaders,” the Ogun PDP Publicity Secretary said.

Meanwhile, the PDP, while reiterating its unalloyed support for all issues bothering on workers welfare, enjoined the leadership of the Organised Labour to remain calm and law-abiding while the strike lasts.

US Broke Rules By Imposing Tariffs On China, Says World Trade Body

Geneva:

The World Trade Organization found on Tuesday that the United States breached global trading rules by imposing multibillion-dollar tariffs in President Donald Trump's trade war with China, a ruling that drew anger from Washington.

The Trump administration says its tariffs imposed two years ago on more than $200 billion in Chinese goods were justified because China was stealing intellectual property and forcing US companies to transfer technology for access to China's markets.

But the WTO's three-member panel said the US duties broke trading rules because they applied only to China and were above maximum rates agreed to by the United States. Washington had not then adequately explained why its measures were a justified exception, the panel concluded.

"This panel report confirms what the Trump administration has been saying for four years: the WTO is completely inadequate to stop China's harmful technology practices," US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in response.

China's Commerce Ministry said Beijing supported the multilateral trading system and respected WTO rules and rulings, and hoped Washington would do the same.

The decision will have little immediate effect on the US tariffs and is just the start of a legal process that could take years to play out, ultimately leading to the WTO approving retaliatory measures if it is upheld - moves that China has already taken on its own.

The United States is likely to appeal Tuesday's ruling. That would put the case into a legal void, however, because Washington has already blocked the appointment of judges to the WTO's appellate body, preventing it from convening the minimum number required to hear cases.

The WTO panel was aware it was stepping into hot water. It noted that it had looked only into the US measures and not China's retaliation, which Washington has not challenged at the WTO.

"The panel is very much aware of the wider context in which the WTO system currently operates, which is one reflecting a range of unprecedented global trade tensions," the 66-page report concluded.

"TAKE STOCK"

The panel recommended the United States bring its measures "into conformity with its obligations", but also encouraged the two sides to work to resolve the overall dispute.

"Time is available for the parties to take stock as proceedings evolve and further consider opportunities for mutually agreed and satisfactory solutions," it said.

During a two-year trade war with Beijing, Trump threatened tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports - more than $500 billion - before the two countries signed a "Phase 1" trade deal in January. Extra tariffs are still in place on some $370 billion worth of Chinese goods, and $62.16 billion in duties have been collected since July 2018, U.S. Customs data show.

Trump has described the WTO as "horrible" and biased towards China, often threatening to quit.

However, during an ABC News town hall on Tuesday, Trump continued to back a trade deal signed with China in January, and suggested Beijing was now buying record amounts of US corn, soybeans and beef because Chinese leaders knew he was "very, very unhappy" about their handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

As he left the White House for that event, Trump said he would "have to do something about the WTO because they've let China get away with murder."

He said he needed to take a closer look at the ruling, but added: "I'm not a big fan of the WTO - that I can tell you right now. Maybe they did us a big favor."

The decision could help fuel a Trump decision to leave the WTO or underpin US arguments for reforming the 25-year-old trade body, said Margaret Cekuta, a former USTR official who helped write a crucial report on China's intellectual property abuses that preceded Trump's tariffs.

"It gives the administration ammo to say the WTO is out of date," said Cekuta, now a principal with the Capitol Counsel lobbying firm, adding U.S. officials could argue that the WTO's inability to rule on intellectual property rights left it ill-prepared to deal with the global economy.

Trump, critical of multilateral institutions, has already quit the U.N. cultural organisation UNESCO and plans to leave the World Health Organization.

  • They were outside the Metro Blue Line station when a suspect walked up and shot them at close range
  • Both officers - Claudia Apolinar, 31, and her 24-year-old male colleague - are in a stable condition in hospital
  • Several cop sources told NBC Los Angeles an armed carjacker is connected to the ambush

The LA County Sheriff's SWAT team are in a standoff with a carjacking suspect who could be linked to the Compton gunman who shot two deputies in the head at the weekend, according to several law enforcement sources.

A huge search is currently underway in a residential area of Lynwood where residents have been on lockdown for more than eight hours after an armed carjacker who led cops on a high speed chase Tuesday is thought to be connected to the ambush that left the LA cops fighting for their lives in hospital.

Two officers - 31-year-old Claudia Apolinar and her 24-year-old male colleague – were shot multiple times as they sat inside their patrol car outside the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Oak Street Saturday night.

Shocking surveillance footage captured the moment the black male suspect strolled up to the police cruiser and gunned the officers down at close range before fleeing the scene on foot.

Both officers survived and are said to be in a stable condition in hospital while a massive manhunt is underway for the gunman, who authorities said is between the ages of 28 and 30.

Authorities are increasingly confident that the suspected carjacker involved in a police chase Tuesday and now thought to be hiding out in a Lynwood home was involved in Saturday's attack on the deputies, law enforcement sources told NBC Los Angeles

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has repeatedly denied any connection between the carjacking suspect and the gunman.

Villanueva, who challenged LeBron James to match a reward to find the suspect earlier this week, told several media outlets Tuesday the two incidents were unrelated and the search was for a carjacker.

However he provided no further details about the carjacker and there was a massive police presence in the area, including the bomb squad and two sheriff's helicopters.

Multiple sources confirmed to NBC the male suspect is wanted in connection with the weekend ambush but the sheriff's department is not yet ready to provide details to the public.

Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez told City News Service he could not confirm whether the suspect was connected to the attack on her colleagues.

'At this time, it's just a carjacking suspect, but it's really important that we apprehend him and ID him to see if there's any nexus with the ambush,' she said.

A huge search is underway in Lynwood for the armed suspect who was allegedly driving a light blue Toyota coupe through the residential area.

LA County Sheriff's Department deputies were in hot pursuit of the vehicle, which the driver then crashed along the 3100 block of Carlin Avenue.

Police sources said the driver fled from the vehicle into a nearby home or condo.

Officers evacuated people out of the area as the SWAT team prepared to search nearby homes for the suspect.

Aerial footage showed multiple police cars continued to be on the scene as darkness fell, while the suspect's vehicle could be seen abandoned in the road.

Residents reported on social media being locked down in their homes for eight hours, as of around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

It is not clear what initially led to the chase and no further details have yet been released.

Police are searching for two main suspects involved in Saturday's ambush - the gunman and a suspected getaway driver who was seen driving the gunman away from the scene in a dark Mercedes.

The investigation has so far focused on two prominent Compton street gangs, sources said.

It was previously suggested that the shooting was a revenge attack for one of the spate of recent deaths of black men and women at the hands of cops across America.

Apolinar, a mother of a six-year-old, and her colleague each sustained multiple gunshot wounds in Saturday's attack.

The two cops - who both graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy last year - both underwent surgery and are now in a stable condition.

Video released by cops showed the suspect approaching an LACSD vehicle parked outside the Metro Blue Line station and opening fire before he fled.

Despite taking multiple bullets – one to the face and several to her upper torso – Apolinar managed to get her partner to safety, apply a tourniquet and radio for help.

A photo of the aftermath of the attack shows Apolinar covered in blood, giving medical help to her injured partner who was also struck in the head.

A harrowing dispatch call reveals a shaky voice called in the shooting, muttering: '998 Compton Pax.'

Recognizing the code for a deputy-involved shooting, a dispatcher asks: 'Just happened?'

The voice replies, almost unintelligibly, 'Compton Pax, deputies down. Compton Pax 998.'

The suspect, meanwhile, is described as a black male between 28 and 30 years old.

He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the shooting and was last seen in a black four-door sedan.

Fox News reporter William la Jeunesse said Monday: 'Los Angeles police will not say this publicly - but some believe this ambush was retaliation for some recent police shootings of black suspects in LA.'

On August 31 black man Dijon Kizzee was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after he was stopped for a traffic violation while riding a bike.

At the beginning of this month the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also voted to ask the coroner to conduct an inquest into the fatal deputy shooting of 18-year-old Andres Guardado on June 18.

Thousands have taken to the streets demanding justice and calling for an end to police brutality and racism since May following the 'murder' of black man George Floyd by a Minneapolis cop who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes until he passed out and died.

Floyd's death reignited outrage over the death of EMT Breonna Taylor, 26, who was shot eight times while sleeping in her bed when three plain clothes officers performed a no-knock arrest warrant at her Louisville apartment on March 13.

In June, unarmed father Rayshard Brooks was shot dead while he ran away from cops in the drive-thru of a Wendy's restaurant in Atlanta.

On August 23, Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a white cop in front of his three young children, leaving the father-of-six paralyzed from the waist down.

A week later on August 30, Dijon Kizzee, 29, was gunned down in the street by LA cops who allegedly shot him 20 times and then handcuffed his dead body after trying to pull him over for an alleged bicycle code violation.

In early September, footage was released by the family of Daniel Prude, 41, showing cops in Rochester, New York, putting a spit hood over his face and pushing his face into the ground for two minutes until he passed out and died on March 23.

The Monroe County medical examiner listed the manner of death as homicide caused by 'complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint' but no charges have been brought against any of the cops.

Amarinder Singh Meets Governor To Stop Controversial Agri Bills, Akalis Meet JP Nadda

Amarinder Singh Meets Governor To Stop Agri Bills, Akalis Meet BJP Chief

Amarinder Singh submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking his intervention to stop the laws, which farmers say will hurt their interests.

Amarinder Singh Meets Governor To Stop Agri Bills, Akalis Meet BJP Chief
Chandigarh:

The row over the three Central agriculture bills in Punjab got intense today with both ruling Congress and the opposition Akali Dal  trying to placate the angry farmers. While Chief Minister Amarinder Singh met Governor VP Singh Badnore, the Akalis made a beeline for BJP chief JP Nadda.

Amarinder Singh submitted a memorandum to the Governor, seeking his intervention to stop the laws, which farmers say will hurt their interests.

Mr Singh told the Governor that any move to tinker with the current procurement system amid the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis, may increase the unrest among the farmers. He also said it "may not be conducive for the peace and development of the region, which faces serious challenges of public order due to a live international border".

He also termed the Shiromani Akali Dal's sudden U-turn over the laws, calling it a "farce". In face of the wrath of farmers, the Akalis claimed yesterday that they had not been consulted about the ordinances and the corresponding bills.

Farmers across Punjab and Haryana have been on the warpath against the ordinances brought on June 5 -- The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020.

On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which seeks to deregulate food items, including cereals, pulses and onion.

The farmers have warned that any MP from the state who support these bills will not be allowed to enter the villages.

With medical officers refusing to share COVID-19 reports with the government, there was under-reporting of cases in some districts on Tuesday, like- Bagalkote reporting zero cases, Udupi 1 and lesser than usual in others, official sources said.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 12:23 AM IST

The Karnataka government on Tuesday requested the government doctors to withdraw their agitation over salary hike as it has conceded to their demand,"despite the grim economic conditions." However, the Karnataka Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) said they would take a call on withdrawing their agitation after consulting their district units and holding a meeting with the government once again on Friday. Until then, as per their plan, they will boycott meetings and not share COVID-19 data, KGMOA said.

With medical officers refusing to share COVID-19 reports with the government, there was under-reporting of cases in some districts on Tuesday, like- Bagalkote reporting zero cases, Udupi 1 and lesser than usual in others, official sources said. Though the tests and treatment to that infected are going on, the data was not being shared, they said, adding that "we need to see what happens tomorrow." Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, terming the talks with KGMOA office-bearers as "fruitful", said the government has decided to give in to the demand "to uplift the hardworking doctors." "The doctors have been working hard day in and out.. in the light of this, the Chief Minister has given the nod to all the proposals by the Health Department in the past six months and this too will be fulfilled," he said.

The demand will be addressed and the Finance department has been briefed in this regard, Sudhakar was quoted as saying by his office in a release. "The revision in salaries will be made based on six-year,13-year, and 20-year promotions for the doctors and details on the same will be obtained from the medical officers," he said, adding that even though this was a burden on the government, it would be addressed on a priority basis.

Along with Sudhakar, Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan and Health Minister B Sriramulu was part of the meeting that was attended by senior health department officials. Over 4,900 government doctors working in various health facilities run by the Health and Family Welfare Department are on strike, demanding pay parity with their counterparts in the medical Education Department or pay revision as per theCentral Government Health Scheme (CGHS) scale.

They had decided not to share COVID data online or offline, and to boycott the meetings. KGMOA President Dr Srinivas G A Tuesday said the government had stated it would fulfill their demands.

"We will discuss with office bearers of all our district units tomorrow, and on Friday will hold a meeting with ministers once again and announce our decision." He said their agitation would continue till Friday.

The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill, 2020, will be made into law once Parliament clears it and replace the Ordinance the validity of which expires in six months.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday introduced in the Rajya Sabha a Bill to replace an ordinance that was promulgated in June to suspend insolvency proceedings for up to one year against fresh Covid-related default from March 25. The move was aimed at providing breather to thousands of firms battered by the pandemic.

The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill, 2020, will be made into law once Parliament clears it and replace the Ordinance the validity of which expires in six months.

The government had sought to suspend invocation of three sections – 7, 8 and 10 — of the IBC for fresh default from March 25. These sections deal with the initiation of the insolvency proceedings by financial and operational creditors and corporate debtors. However, insolvency applications filed for default before March 25 are being entertained.

The cut-off date of March 25 (for filing insolvency application) also came as a relief for the lenders who had filed applications or intended to do so against stressed firms that had defaulted before the pandemic started to spread, in sync with the central bank’s June 7, 2019, circular. According to this circular, a default case will have to be referred to the NCLT under the IBC if no other resolution plan is firmed up within six months.

However, as some analysts have pointed out, the breather will potentially hit financial and operational creditors hard and bleed their balance sheet, apart from temporarily depriving them of a credible mode of bad debt resolution.

Verdict

The RTX 2060 gets the performance part right but is nowhere close to being affordable, not at all for the Indian market. Even NVIDIA knows that which is why we’re going to see the GTX 1660 Ti in roughly a month’s time without any of the fancy RT cores. Another distinction with this new generation is that the RTX 2060 is very much closer to the RTX 2070 in spec. Moreover, it has the best price-to-performance ratio at the moment. This makes the RTX 2060 an excellent gateway card for those interested in experiencing hardware accelerated ray-tracing. For gamers who want an affordable and powerful card can wait a month for the GTX 1660 Ti launch.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 detailed review

The latest member of the new NVIDIA RTX family is the mid-tier RTX 2060. Having managed to incorporate a whole new paradigm with the hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing feature, the new Turing architecture based NVIDIA cards were marketed with a lot of emphasis on the ray tracing and DLSS features. While the graphics cards themselves were quite well received, the new features were most certainly not since no video games shipped with them at launch. Even now, it’s just Battlefield V that has ray tracing enabled while the others are yet to push the new feature out. Needless to say, ray tracing is seen purely as a luxury when it comes to your video gaming experience and that means most of the gamers are going to take the risk-averse approach and buy something in the 60-class or 50-class of graphics cards. It’s not just our opinion, even NVIDIA thinks so as is evidenced by the upcoming GTX 1660 Ti graphics card which will ship without the fancy RTX feature. Hopefully, with the second generation of RTX cards, the feature set will be better optimised and we’ll have more games that have RTX.

NVIDIA RTX 2060 Founders Edition specifications

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 is based on the same TU106 GPU that powers the RTX 2070. Up until now, with all previous generation of NVIDIA graphics cards, the 60-class of graphics cards always had a different GPU. This time around, it seams that we’re getting a cut down variant of the RTX 2060’s bigger brother. Since this is an RTX card, we get 30 RT cores which is only six cores lesser than the RTX 2070.

Launch Price $349 $299 $599 $449

Another thing to note is the pricing, we are looking at a 60-class graphics card which is $150 dollars more expensive than its predecessor. That’s a huge jump especially given that the 60-class graphics cards are the sweet spot in NVIDIA’s lineup. This is why 15.39% of Steam users have the GTX 1060, a good 6% lead over the second most popular card. Suffice to say, the RTX 2060 is not going to end up as the favourite among gamers.

Given that the GPU is the same on the RTX 2060, it would be exciting to see if any of the new cards can be cross-flashed to unlock the disabled cores. This would only be possible if the disabled ones aren’t fused off. One can always hope.

Performance

Our test rig has been upgraded to keep up with the times and the new Windows releases. This means all our legacy scores are not comparable, specially given the fact that CPU performance has gone up by a significant margin. Here’s what we’re running at the moment.

Processor - Intel Core i9 9900K
CPU Cooler - Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM
Motherboard - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO
RAM - 2x 8 GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3200 MHz
SSD - Corsair MP510
PSU - Corsair HX1050

Graphics cards:
RTX 2080 Ti
RTX 2080
RTX 2070
AMD RX 590

We ran the usual set of synthetics on the RTX 2060 which includes a host of benchmarks from 3DMark, Unigine, Compubench and a few others. Here's how the RTX 2060 fared.

The part that stands out about this graph is the relative performance within the family and how it has scaled since Maxwell. Our old benchmarks peg the FireStrike scores of the GTX 960 to that of the GTX 980 at a ratio of 1.95. Which meant that the 80-class card would be roughly 2x better than the 60-class card in performance. Now if we are to see how the RTX 2060 compares with the RTX 2080, then the same metric produces a factor of 1.26. Essentially, the RTX 2060 is a lot closer to the RTX 2080 than how the previous generation of graphics cards used to be. This should tell you why the RTX 2060 is priced so much. It's not just about the new Turing cards being expensive to begin with but the relative performance also plays into the high pricing. However, gamers don't spend days and nights comparing 3DMark scores, so let's see how this fares in gaming.

We see a very linear scaling of performance across the RTX family of graphics cards. Please note that the benchmarks for the 10-series cards are from our older test rig which had a different HEDT CPU. The performance difference isn't much but we don't use the same in our scoring mechanism for the sake of consistency. For 1080p gaming, the RTX 2060 just about equals the GTX 1070 Ti in practically all DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 video games. The same trend can be seen even when the resolution is scaled higher. With the 10-series cards, we see quite a bit of frame rate drops at higher resolutions. Don't bother looking at the Far Cry 5 numbers since it's one of the least scaling video games we've come across. It's the only game where the GTX 1080 Ti still scores more than the RTX 2080 Ti. You can also see how the RTX 2060 frame rates are closer to the RTX 2070's frame rates. With the 10-series cards, this delta is much higher. What we're looking at is simply not a 60-class card.

Pricing

The NVIDIA RTX 2060 Founders Edition is priced at Rs.31,000 and is bundled with a free game. You can pick either Anthem or Battlefield V if you get the RTX 2060 FE. All partner cards don’t get the free games from NVIDIA though they are absolutely free to offer bundles themselves. There have been multiple threads wherein confused buyers end up not receiving the bundled game because the retailer isn’t participating in the bundle program. Pricing for the card on NVIDIA’s own store is lower than what their board partners are offering at the moment. So NVIDIA has a clear advantage and there’s practically no reason to get a partner card unless they have a value proposition that’s better than what NVIDIA is offering.

To better understand this, we’ve plotted a graph to showcase value for money based on 3DMark Ultra scores for each of these cards vs their current India pricing. With or without the video game bundle, the RTX 2060 currently offers really good value for your money. The AMD RX 590 comes second after which it’s the previous gen GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1070 that seem better purchases. We’ve added an overlay of the curve indicating the relative benchmark scores in red to show performance with respect to each other. The performance of the RTX 2060 being very close to the GTX 1070 makes it really good but the GTX 1070 has the advantage of having 8 GB VRAM against the 6 GB that the RTX 2060 has. If we offset the cost of the additional memory then the GTX 1070 Ti appears as the better option. However, the two cards use different memory technologies. The RTX 2060 has the faster GDDR6 memory with a cumulative bandwidth of 336 GB/s while the GTX 1070 Ti tops out at 256 GB/s which means the RTX 2060 has more overhead and thus, lesser chances of bottlenecking. Please don’t get us started on SLI. TL;DR - The RTX 2060 gives you the best bang for your buck.

Verdict

NVIDIA’s RTX 2060 is a welcome addition to the RTX family of graphics cards. It’s got quite the performance upgrade over the previous generation GTX 1060 and comes with a price tag to match. One could argue that the premium is for the RT cores and they’d be right but the 60-class of graphics cards have always been about catering to the intersection of affordability and performance. They also share the same GPU although the RTX 2060 has six SMs disabled.

This is why we see the performance that is much higher than what we’re used to seeing. It feels somewhat like the second coming of Maxwell, but the price tag is what keeps it at bay. Performance wise, we have a card that equals (and sometimes betters) the GTX 1070 Ti in 1080p as well as 1440p gaming benchmarks. It’s even faster than the Radeon Vega 56. However, we don’t see it selling well compared to previous 60-class graphics cards. It will most certainly match sales of 70-class graphics cards. All of this makes the RTX 2060 an excellent gateway card for those interested in experiencing hardware accelerated ray-tracing. For gamers who want an affordable and powerful card can wait a month for the GTX 1660 Ti launch

Rupee Volatile Against Dollar Ahead Of US Central Bank Policy Decision

The rupee was last seen trading at 73.64 against the greenback

Mumbai:

The rupee witnessed high volatility against the US dollar in opening trade on Wednesday ahead of the released of the policy decision by the US central bank. The rupee opened at 73.70 at the interbank forex market, registering a decline of 7 paise over its last close, but soon pared the losses and was trading at 73.64, unchanged from its previous closing.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.01 per cent to 93.06.

"The focus will be on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) tonight. Market participants would expect further clarifications from the US Fed on how average inflation targeting framework would be implemented," said Abhishek Goenka, founder and CEO, IFA Global.

Mr Goenka further said that "the threshold for the US dollar to weaken from current levels is high as a lot of dovishness has already been factored in. One possible trigger could be the Fed predicating keeping rates at close to zero on inflation expectations reaching a certain level".

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was trading 119.52 points higher at 39,163.87 and the broader NSE Nifty rose 31.35 points to 11,553.15.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,170.89 crore on a net basis on Tuesday, according to provisional exchange data.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.48 per cent to $41.13 per barrel.

Denver's dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:33 AM IST

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.: Denver’s dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

Murray scored 40 points, Jokic had a triple-double by the third quarter and Denver again overcame a double-digit deficit to shock the Los Angeles Clippers 104-89 in Game 7 on Tuesday night.

Denver became the first team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 series deficit twice in the same postseason.

Even more history: The Nuggets are the third team in the U.S. major pro sports to rally from a pair of 3-1 deficits in the same playoffs, joining the 1985 Kansas City Royals and 2003 Minnesota Wild.

Denver will face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

The 7-foot Jokic had a monster game with 16 points, 13 assists and 22 rebounds, which were the most by a Nuggets player in an NBA playoff game. He broke his record of 19 that he set last season and shared with Marcus Camby.

In a familiar trend, the Nuggets found themselves down by 12 in the first half. They also trailed 61-54 with 10:50 let in the third when they caught fire. The Nuggets went on a 35-13 run to build up a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter.

They led by as many as 20.

Murray helped the Nuggets pour it on down the stretch to give coach Michael Malone a 49th birthday present.

The team also rallied back from double-digit margins in their last two games as well to stun the Clippers.

Despite the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers fell short of the conference finals, where they’ve never been. They fell to 0-8 all-time in games where they could clinch a trip to the conference finals.

Leonard finished with 14 points on 6-of-22 shooting, while George had 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

It was Denvers talented twosome that stole the show.

Jokic insisted the third-seeded Nuggets weren’t feeling any pressure. He said Game 7 was just another game. After all, this was Denver’s fourth straight Game 7 dating to the playoffs last season.

After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, the Nuggets worked their way back into the game behind the shooting of Murray. He scored 25 before intermission as the Clippers elected to double-team Jokic.

TIP-INS

Nuggets: Jerami Grant and Gary Harris each had 14 points.

Clippers: G Landry Shamet turned his right ankle in the first quarter, limped down the floor, hit a 3-pointer and then hobbled to the locker room. He returned just before halftime. … Montrezl Harrell led the Clippers with 20 points.

FASHION FORWARD

The Nuggets coaching staff went with their customary all-black outfits (a nod to singer Johnny Cash). The Clippers wore salmon-colored polo shirts that have been lucky for them inside the bubble.

Just coaches being a little superstitious.

I worked with coaches that knew the record of the ties they wore, Malone said. Yes, we are a weird group. Well look at any advantage necessary. As the jump ball goes up, it doesnt matter what were wearing.

Sleep apnoea linked to poorer outcomes from COVID-19, study finds

Image

A systematic review of studies by researchers at the University of Warwick has found that people who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea could be at an increased risk of adverse outcomes from COVID-19.

The review, published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, emphasises the need for further research into the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, on those with the sleep condition.

The systematic review looked at eighteen studies performed up to June 2020, all of which investigated the relationship between sleep apnoea and COVID-19. Of these studies, eight were mainly related to the risk of death from COVID-19 and ten were related to diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep apnoea.

Despite there being only a few studies specifically looking at COVID-19 and sleep apnoea, the researchers found there is evidence to suggest that many patients in intensive care for COVID-19 had the sleep condition, and in diabetic patients it may exacerbate a risk that is independent from other risk factors.

In one study of patients who had diabetes who were hospitalised with COVID-19, patients who were being treated for obstructive sleep apnoea were at 2.8 times a greater risk of dying on the seventh day after hospital admission.

According to the researchers, in the UK up to 85% of obstructive sleep apnoea disorders are undetected, suggesting that the 1.5 million people currently diagnosed with the condition is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Without a clear picture of how many people have obstructive sleep apnoea it is difficult to determine exactly how many people with the condition may have experienced worse outcomes due to COVID-19,” said Dr Michelle Miller, lead author of the study.

“This condition is greatly underdiagnosed, and we don’t know whether undiagnosed sleep apnoea confers an even greater risk or not.

“It is likely that COVID-19 increases oxidative stress and inflammation and has effects on the bradykinin pathways, all of which are also affected in obstructive sleep apnoea patients. When you have individuals in which these mechanisms are already affected, it wouldn’t be surprising that COVID-19 affects them more strongly,” she added.

China Steel Sector Sees Higher Demand In Second Half, Calls To Fend Off Import Surges

Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:54 PM IST

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

Nine steelmakers, including the biggest China Baowu Steel Group, Shougang Group and Ansteel Group raised concerns on the steel market amid the coronavirus disruptions and rising production costs, the companies said at a conference held by the CISA on Sept.9.

“The steel sector will see increasing demand, sufficient supply, easing but still high inventories, falling but stabilising performance in the second half of the year,” the steel body cited the companies as saying.

The steel mills had advised the association to strengthen monitoring of steel trade, push forward mergers and reorganisations and ease raw material supply and demand pressure.

China’s steel sector has bucked the trend of global sluggish demand due to the pandemic in 2020, supported by a raft of economic stimulus such as infrastructure investments, but also dented by increasing raw material prices and imports.

The world’s top metals consumer ramped up purchases of hot-rolled coils and semi-finished products in recent months, fuelled by lower overseas prices.

Its overall imports of steel products had jumped 59.6% in the first eight months of 2020 compared with same period year earlier.

He Wenbo, chairman of the CISA told at the conference to “correctly understand” recent net imports of crude steel and to take new measures amid turbulent international situation to safeguard industry benefits.

“In the long run, trade remedy is a double-edged sword,” the steel body cited He in the statement. “The fundamental solution is to enhance companies’ competitiveness. There’s large room to lower institutional cost.”

Uptick Noticed In June,July Has Levelled Off: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said economic recovery is likely to be gradual

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday that the uptick noticed in the economy in the June-July period seems to have levelled off. The RBI Governor was addressing members of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICC) at the industry body's National Executive Committee meeting. His remarks come days after official data showed consumer inflation in the country eased marginally in August, but remained above the central bank's target range of 4-6 per cent for the fifth month in a row. That supported views of many economists that the RBI will avoid easing monetary policy further in its scheduled, bi-monthly review, due in October. Meanwhile, the country's GDP or gross domestic product crashed a record 23.9 per cent in the April-June period, as restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic hurt an economy already struggling against low demand and weakness in key sectors.

Here are highlights of what RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said:

  • Uptick which was noticed in June and July appears to have levelled off in few sectors
  • Recovery likely to be gradual
  • Liquidity lines opened to financial institutions such as NABARD have flown to small non-banking financial companies, cooperative banks, other institutions
  • RBI closely monitoring economic situation, will act accordingly

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
  • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.
