Airmeet bags $12 million in funding led by Sequoia Capital India

Online events hosting platform Airmeet has raised $12 million in Series A funding led by Sequoia Capital India, along with participation from US-based Redpoint Ventures, and existing investors Accel India, Venture Highway, and Global Founders Capital (GFC).

The investment comes as Airmeet is exiting its public beta stage and is readying to open its app for usage by organisations through a freemium model, similar to other software products that are vying for a foothold in the sector.

"A good portion of the funding will be deployed into product and technology development. The second area would be to grow the customer base to 10X in the next 24 months," said Lalit Mangal, co-founder at Airmeet.

Airmeet claims it is already doing around 1,000 events a month and has a base of close to one million users, which is growing at around 25% month-on-month. It said this growth has been possible though organic word-of-mouth marketing, with 23% of events being created on its platform by people who attended an event on Airmeet.

"Covid-19 has accelerated a permanent behavioral shift across many industries. With digitisation of largely traditional spaces leapfrogging by years, the $800+ billion global offline events space is up for grabs. There is massive potential for players who drive the industry's transition towards online-events," said Abhishek Mohan, vice-president, Sequoia Capital India.

Mangal said that Airmeet would also grow its team from around 60 today to 100 employees soon, but would largely retain a lean product heavy team, leveraging the company's high organic growth. While the company will soon reveal pricing for its product, he said that the focus will not be on revenue growth.

"We have just graduated out of the beta stage. We're getting one paid customer every six hours, despite not publishing pricing. For the mid-term we're really not focused on revenues, because this product is a media format innovation and we want to really keep it unshackled rather than locking it," added Mangal.

While Airmeet credits some of its high growth to the Covid-19 pandemic which disrupted the offline events sector globally, it says there's a growing base of customers that understand the value of doing events virtually, and the pandemic has only increased that realisation.

Proposed electricity bill usurps states’ powers: Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao | Hyderabad News - Times of India

Proposed electricity bill usurps states’ powers: Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao

HYDERABAD: Terming the Centre’s proposed Electricity Bill, 2020 as ‘draconian’ and aimed at taking away powers of the states, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday said PM Narendra Modi is working towards complete centralisation of power. The UPA government too had centralised power in some sectors, he added.
“The Electricity Act of 2003 was against the federal spirit and intended to curtail the powers of the states. Chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Delhi have spoken with me. Our TRS MPs will take up the issue in Parliament,” Chandrasekhar Rao said during a short discussion on the new Electricity Bill.

The assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution, moved by the CM, against the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2020 and asked the Centre to withdraw it. “We have seen what happened to BSNL, LIC and other public sector undertakings. The governments at the Centre are working to hand over every sector to private parties,” he said.
“If the Bill is passed, the distribution system will go into the hands of private players and éxistence of Telangana distribution companies — Transco and Genco— will become a big question and many working in these power utilities, may lose their jobs,” he said. “Some pressurised me to give distribution to private firms and I rejected the proposal saying our government will not give even a MW of power distribution to private agencies,’ KCR said.
Explaining how the new Bill would impact the state’s interests, the chief minister said the government will have to fix meters to about 26 lakh agriculture motors, which itself costs about Rs 700-750 crore and all farmers, who have been getting 24x7 free power, will have to pay bills every month. For taking meter readings, the government would have to engage 3,000 people. Many sectors will get affected with this new bill as the government is giving cross subsidy to industries and some domestic consumers like SCs & STs,” he said.
The CM said, renewable energy was a big conspiracy to help some firms in north India. “The Centre will not consider hydel power generation by Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam project. If the state fails to comply with norms and ensure renewable energy, Centre may impose a penalty of 0.50 paise to Rs 2 per unit. This will compel the state to reduce power generation in state-owned thermal power plants. What kind of rules are these?” KCR questioned.

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

    • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
    • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
    • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
    • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
    • Stay home if you feel unwell.
    • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
    • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.

‘Awareness not lockdown will flatten Covid curve’

CM Gehlot during an online corona awareness programme on Tuesday
JAIPUR: Health experts have suggested engaging communities in launching rigorous awareness campaigns instead of lockdown or restrictions to flatten the Covid-19 curve in the state.
During a Corona Awareness Dialogue online programme presided by chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday, leading doctors like Dr Naresh Trehan, Dr S K Sarin and Dr Devi Shetty stated that the state must launch short-term and long-term campaigns by taking the communities into confidence. Sarin advocated the need for regulated social policing for the strict compliance of masks while suggesting Gehlot that society to be given the charge of decimating Covid-19.
“The campaigns like No Masks, No Entry, should be started across the state. Everyone should be involved in the campaign and if it is followed for four weeks, the curve will fall flat by November,” said Sarin, who is director of Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Delhi
He shared eye-opening reports demonstrate that control is in the hands of every individual. “In our hospital every month, we conduct Covid-19 test of all medical and non-medical staff which reveals that 2% of doctors, 7% nurses and 20% other staff turning positive. It is interesting to note that doctors and nurses remain in direct touch with the Covid patients, while the other staff is not supposed to come in contact with any patients. It is clear that we have become complacent,” said Sarin. The founder and chairman of Medanta-The Medicity, Trehan cautioned people who have become complacent as 98% recover after no or mild symptoms.
“It is seen that those who recover after no or mild symptoms develops some lifetime damages in heart or lungs,” said Trehan.
He pointed out that politicians should wear masks all the time in public which gives a strong message to the masses while referring to the meeting.
The session was attended by government officials from departments to the gram panchayat level.

Put curbs on public dealing, departments told

Gurgaon: In view of the surge in Covid-19 cases, Haryana on Tuesday issued preventive measures to be adopted by all government offices and departments. All districts have been instructed to allow visitors only in case of emergencies.
The Gurgaon district administration, however, is yet to decide on the restrictions. Public dealing takes place at Antyodaya Saral Kendras in Mini Secretariat, revenue department office and other offices.
“We will take a call locally and look at how feasible it is to implement,” deputy commissioner Amit Khatri said, adding that public dealing at the revenue department will continue since it already happens in a regulated manner after the system of e-appointment was implemented.
For the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, public dealing takes place at its citizen facilitation centres, birth and death certificate department and taxation department.
The government order states that employees over the age of 50 years, those suffering from hypertension, blood pressure, heart or lung disease or cancer should not be exposed to any frontline work that requires direct contact with the public.
“Pregnant employees — whether regular, contractual, outsourced, daily wager or ad hoc — shall work from home,” reads the order.
Government offices will also have to organise regular medical camps to keep a tab on the employees’ health. The departments have been instructed to avoid movement of physical files and cases can be transferred online. They have been asked to avoid meetings involving a large number of people and hold them through video-conferencing as far as possible. Apart from this, maintaining a gap of six feet between two seats, use of hand sanitisers, masks and thermal scanners is mandatory.
While the attendance of group A and B officers will continue to be 100% in government offices, the percentage has been fixed at 50% for group C and D employees.

Pune: Over 1 lakh patients discharged in PMC limits, recovery rate hits 83% | Pune News - Times of India

Pune: Over 1 lakh patients discharged in PMC limits, recovery rate hits 83%

Women maintain adequate distance at a bus stop on JM Road
PUNE: More than one lakh Covid-19 patients have successfully recovered in the Pune municipal limits, taking the recovery rate to 83.3%, its highest since May.

With a total caseload of 1.20 lakh, the recovery count in the PMC areas reached 1,00,532 on Monday, data released by the district health office revealed.
It pointed out that the recovery rate in the PMC areas was around 64% in July, which increased to 77% around mid-August before hitting 83% on September 14. In May and June, the recovery rate was around 50% and 63%, respectively.
In the last one month, the PMC areas have added over 49,200 cases and recorded 45,300 recoveries, clocking the recovery rate of over 90%. “Early detection, increased testing and treatment has helped push up recoveries. We have been urging people not to ignore any symptoms and get tested at the earliest. The testing has been pushed up in the city limits and efforts are on to increase it further. About 6,000 to 7,000 tests are being conducted every day,” a civic official said.
Another official said more asymptomatic patients were opting for home isolation. “Higher number of patients in the city are in home isolation than those admitted in the hospitals. This will eventually bring down the burden on the medical infrastructure. While there has been a rise in the cases, the number of patients recovering from the contagion has also jumped,” the official said.
Mayor Muralidhar Mohol said, “It is good that recoveries are up. Efforts are on to bring down mortality rate as well and provide beds to the critical patients.”

WTO finds Washington broke trade rules by putting tariffs on China; ruling angers U.S

The Trump administration says its tariffs imposed two years ago on more than $200 billion in Chinese goods were justified because China was stealing intellectual property and forcing U.S. companies to transfer technology for access to China's markets.

          Reuters

The World Trade Organization found that the United States breached global trading rules by imposing multibillion-dollar tariffs in President Donald Trump's trade war with China, a ruling that drew anger from Washington.

The Trump administration says its tariffs imposed two years ago on more than $200 billion in Chinese goods were justified because China was stealing intellectual property and forcing U.S. companies to transfer technology for access to China's markets.

But the WTO's three-member panel said the U.S. duties broke trading rules because they applied only to China and were above maximum rates agreed to by the United States. Washington had not then adequately explained why its measures were a justified exception, the panel concluded.

"This panel report confirms what the Trump administration has been saying for four years: the WTO is completely inadequate to stop China's harmful technology practices," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in response.

          related news

China's Commerce Ministry said Beijing supported the multilateral trading system and respected WTO rules and rulings, and hoped Washington would do the same.

The decision will have little immediate effect on the U.S. tariffs and is just the start of a legal process that could take years to play out, ultimately leading to the WTO approving retaliatory measures if it is upheld - moves that China has already taken on its own.

The United States is likely to appeal Tuesday's ruling. That would put the case into a legal void, however, because Washington has already blocked the appointment of judges to the WTO's appellate body, preventing it from convening the minimum number required to hear cases.

The WTO panel was aware it was stepping into hot water. It noted that it had looked only into the U.S. measures and not China's retaliation, which Washington has not challenged at the WTO.

"The panel is very much aware of the wider context in which the WTO system currently operates, which is one reflecting a range of unprecedented global trade tensions," the 66-page report concluded.

          'TAKE STOCK'

The panel recommended the United States bring its measures "into conformity with its obligations", but also encouraged the two sides to work to resolve the overall dispute.

"Time is available for the parties to take stock as proceedings evolve and further consider opportunities for mutually agreed and satisfactory solutions," it said.

During a two-year trade war with Beijing, Trump threatened tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports - more than $500 billion - before the two countries signed a "Phase 1" trade deal in January. Extra tariffs are still in place on some $370 billion worth of Chinese goods, and $62.16 billion in duties have been collected since July 2018, U.S. Customs data show.

Trump has described the WTO as "horrible" and biased towards China, often threatening to quit.

As he left the White House for a campaign rally, Trump said he would "have to do something about the WTO because they've let China get away with murder."

He said he needed to take a closer look at the ruling, but added: "I'm not a big fan of the WTO - that I can tell you right now. Maybe they did us a big favor."

The decision could help fuel a Trump decision to leave the WTO or underpin U.S. arguments for reforming the 25-year-old trade body, said Margaret Cekuta, a former USTR official who helped write a crucial report on China's intellectual property abuses that preceded Trump's tariffs.

"It gives the administration ammo to say the WTO is out of date. If they can’t rule on intellectual property rights, then what is their position in the broader economy going forward?" said Cekuta, now a principal with the Capitol Counsel lobbying firm.

Trump, critical of multilateral institutions, has already quit the U.N. cultural organisation UNESCO and plans to leave the World Health Organization.

Covid shadow on Telangana assembly, session likely to end today

          Telangana assembly premises
HYDERABAD: Covid-19 has cast its shadow on the ongoing assembly session which is set for an early conclusion on Wednesday. The monsoon session, which began on September 7, was initially supposed to be held till September 28.
A decision to call off the session has reportedly been taken by speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy after Nampally MLA Jaffar Hussain Meraj (60) and 50 others, including police personnel on bandobust duty and assembly staff, tested positive for novel coronavirus on Monday.
Srinivas Reddy convened a meeting with leaders of various political parties and discussed the issue. He is believed to have conveyed his decision of ending the session much before the scheduled time as he was worried about the virus spreading among legislators and other assembly staff.
Before the session began, the speaker had made it mandatory for all legislators, cops, mediapersons and staff to undergo testing.
“In fact, after a recent twoday break, testing was done again on all the MLAs,” a source said.
It may be recalled that finance minister T Harish Rao had tested positive just a day before the session began on September 7.
Assembly passed 11 Bills, amendments to various Acts
Sources said the government is also favouring early closure of the session before the pandemic poses more danger to other MLAs. Assembly is likely to take up short discussion on GHMC on the request of MIM legislators and adopt a resolution on GST arrears on Wednesday.
Congress and MIM leaders, however, wanted continuation of the session as several issues such as Krishna water row and GST arrears were yet to be discussed. The opposition parties also want the government to discuss the contentious Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Project proposed by AP and construction of the new secretariat complex. For the six days it conducted business, assembly passed 11 Bills and amendments to various Acts. Among them were the new Revenue Act and TS bPASS Bill. Apart from Covid-19, the House passed a resolution seeking Bharat Ratna for former PM PV Narasimha Rao.

Gujarat: NIA arrests Godhra man for links with Pakistan spies | Vadodara News - Times of India

Gujarat: NIA arrests Godhra man for links with Pakistan spies

            Giteli Imran
AHMEDABAD / VADODARA: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday arrested Imran Giteli, 37, rickshaw driver from Godhra for his alleged involvement in the Visakhapatnam naval espionage case of December last year.
In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said, “NIA arrested a key accused viz. Giteli Imran, 37, resident of Godhra in Panchmahal district in connection of NIA, Hyderabad, under section 120B and 121A of IPC along with sections 17 and 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment (UAPA) Act and section 3 of official secrets act for his involvement in espionage activities and working for Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.”
Imran, a resident Vali Falia in the Polan Bazaar area of Godhra, was allegedly associated with Pakistani spies and agents under the guise of cross-border cloth trade. Acting on the directions of Pakistan-based spies, he allegedly deposited money in the bank accounts of Indian Navy personnel at regular intervals in lieu of sensitive and classified data provided by them, NIA said. Some digital devices and incriminating documents have been seized in the search conducted at his house on Monday.
The case relates to an international espionage racket in which Pakistan-based spies recruited agents in India for collecting sensitive and classified information on locations and movements of Indian Naval ships and submarines, and other defence establishments. Investigation revealed that some Navy personnel came in contact with Pakistani agents through social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
They shared classified information in lieu of money deposited into their bank accounts through Indian associates of Pak ISI who had business interests in Pakistan. A chargesheet has been filed in the case on June 15 this year against 14 persons. Further investigation is on.
Imran used to drive an auto-rickshaw in the town for a living till he was arrested. His father Yakub also drives a rickshaw and has been avoiding the media ever since Imran was picked up in the early hours on Monday.
Sources said that Imran was earlier a ladies tailor, but gave up the work due to back pain issues. He was also involved in trading of fabrics and clothes from his home.
According to those who know the Giteli family, the family has some relatives in Pakistan. But this is not surprising as several persons from the minority community in Godhra have relatives in Pakistan and are even married to men or women from across the border. Karachi even has a Godhra Colony that is named so as migrants from Godhra settled in the area.
Sources said that Imran is married and has four children. Other members of the family include Imran’s parents and Imran’s two brothers who are married.
