Tanzania on Wednesday announced it was lifting a ban on several Kenyan airlines after Nairobi announced it would no longer impose a coronavirus quarantine on travellers from the country.

In the latest spat in a long-running diplomatic row between the East African neighbours, Tanzania last month banned the airlines after Kenya put passengers travelling from the country on a list of those who would have to undergo mandatory quarantine.

While Kenya imposed strict movement restrictions and other measures to curb the virus, Tanzania has come under fire for failing to take it seriously enough, and claiming that God was protecting it from the illness.

However, Kenya on Tuesday backed down, exempting Tanzania from the quarantine.

"In view of that and on a reciprocal basis, the United Republic of Tanzania now lifted the suspension for all Kenyan operators namely Kenya Airways, Fly 540 Limited, Safarilink Aviation and AirKenya Express Limited," the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.

President John Magufuli's refusal to impose lockdowns or social distancing measures, and to halt the release of figures on infections since late April, has made him a regional outlier and caused concern among Tanzania's neighbours and the World Health Organization.

Magufuli declared Tanzania free of coronavirus in June, thanking God and the prayers of citizens for defeating the disease.

The diplomatic spat between Kenya and Tanzania erupted soon after the outbreak of the pandemic in East Africa, when Kenya blocked Tanzanian truck drivers from entering the country, fearing they would spread the disease.

Denver's dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 9:33 AM IST

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.: Denver’s dynamic duo of Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic led another stunning turnaround as the Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2009.

Murray scored 40 points, Jokic had a triple-double by the third quarter and Denver again overcame a double-digit deficit to shock the Los Angeles Clippers 104-89 in Game 7 on Tuesday night.

Denver became the first team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 series deficit twice in the same postseason.

Even more history: The Nuggets are the third team in the U.S. major pro sports to rally from a pair of 3-1 deficits in the same playoffs, joining the 1985 Kansas City Royals and 2003 Minnesota Wild.

Denver will face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals.

The 7-foot Jokic had a monster game with 16 points, 13 assists and 22 rebounds, which were the most by a Nuggets player in an NBA playoff game. He broke his record of 19 that he set last season and shared with Marcus Camby.

In a familiar trend, the Nuggets found themselves down by 12 in the first half. They also trailed 61-54 with 10:50 let in the third when they caught fire. The Nuggets went on a 35-13 run to build up a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter.

They led by as many as 20.

Murray helped the Nuggets pour it on down the stretch to give coach Michael Malone a 49th birthday present.

The team also rallied back from double-digit margins in their last two games as well to stun the Clippers.

Despite the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers fell short of the conference finals, where they’ve never been. They fell to 0-8 all-time in games where they could clinch a trip to the conference finals.

Leonard finished with 14 points on 6-of-22 shooting, while George had 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

It was Denvers talented twosome that stole the show.

Jokic insisted the third-seeded Nuggets weren’t feeling any pressure. He said Game 7 was just another game. After all, this was Denver’s fourth straight Game 7 dating to the playoffs last season.

After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, the Nuggets worked their way back into the game behind the shooting of Murray. He scored 25 before intermission as the Clippers elected to double-team Jokic.

TIP-INS

Nuggets: Jerami Grant and Gary Harris each had 14 points.

Clippers: G Landry Shamet turned his right ankle in the first quarter, limped down the floor, hit a 3-pointer and then hobbled to the locker room. He returned just before halftime. … Montrezl Harrell led the Clippers with 20 points.

FASHION FORWARD

The Nuggets coaching staff went with their customary all-black outfits (a nod to singer Johnny Cash). The Clippers wore salmon-colored polo shirts that have been lucky for them inside the bubble.

Just coaches being a little superstitious.

I worked with coaches that knew the record of the ties they wore, Malone said. Yes, we are a weird group. Well look at any advantage necessary. As the jump ball goes up, it doesnt matter what were wearing.

Sleep apnoea linked to poorer outcomes from COVID-19, study finds - PharmaTimes

Sleep apnoea linked to poorer outcomes from COVID-19, study finds

Image

A systematic review of studies by researchers at the University of Warwick has found that people who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea could be at an increased risk of adverse outcomes from COVID-19.

The review, published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, emphasises the need for further research into the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, on those with the sleep condition.

The systematic review looked at eighteen studies performed up to June 2020, all of which investigated the relationship between sleep apnoea and COVID-19. Of these studies, eight were mainly related to the risk of death from COVID-19 and ten were related to diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep apnoea.

Despite there being only a few studies specifically looking at COVID-19 and sleep apnoea, the researchers found there is evidence to suggest that many patients in intensive care for COVID-19 had the sleep condition, and in diabetic patients it may exacerbate a risk that is independent from other risk factors.

In one study of patients who had diabetes who were hospitalised with COVID-19, patients who were being treated for obstructive sleep apnoea were at 2.8 times a greater risk of dying on the seventh day after hospital admission.

According to the researchers, in the UK up to 85% of obstructive sleep apnoea disorders are undetected, suggesting that the 1.5 million people currently diagnosed with the condition is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Without a clear picture of how many people have obstructive sleep apnoea it is difficult to determine exactly how many people with the condition may have experienced worse outcomes due to COVID-19,” said Dr Michelle Miller, lead author of the study.

“This condition is greatly underdiagnosed, and we don’t know whether undiagnosed sleep apnoea confers an even greater risk or not.

“It is likely that COVID-19 increases oxidative stress and inflammation and has effects on the bradykinin pathways, all of which are also affected in obstructive sleep apnoea patients. When you have individuals in which these mechanisms are already affected, it wouldn’t be surprising that COVID-19 affects them more strongly,” she added.

Tottenham coach, Mourinho speaks on signing Gareth Bale

Published

on

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has insisted that he tried to sign winger, Gareth Bale, for Real Madrid before the Welsh international made the switch from Spurs.

Mourinho also refused to confirm reports he wants to bring Bale back to Tottenham this summer.

Bale, 31, joined Madrid in 2013, the same summer Mourinho departed the La Liga champions after three years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I do not comment on hypothetical stuff. Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid player,” Mourinho said when asked about Tottenham’s interest in Bale at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Thursday.

“It is not my job to have contact with agents, I do not want to comment on that, especially on players at other clubs.

“I tried to sign him for Real Madrid, which was not possible during my time there. But the president followed my instinct and followed my knowledge and the season I left he brought Gareth to the club.

“That’s no secret and Gareth knows that.”

China Steel Sector Sees Higher Demand In Second Half, Calls To Fend Off Import Surges

Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:54 PM IST

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

Nine steelmakers, including the biggest China Baowu Steel Group, Shougang Group and Ansteel Group raised concerns on the steel market amid the coronavirus disruptions and rising production costs, the companies said at a conference held by the CISA on Sept.9.

“The steel sector will see increasing demand, sufficient supply, easing but still high inventories, falling but stabilising performance in the second half of the year,” the steel body cited the companies as saying.

The steel mills had advised the association to strengthen monitoring of steel trade, push forward mergers and reorganisations and ease raw material supply and demand pressure.

China’s steel sector has bucked the trend of global sluggish demand due to the pandemic in 2020, supported by a raft of economic stimulus such as infrastructure investments, but also dented by increasing raw material prices and imports.

The world’s top metals consumer ramped up purchases of hot-rolled coils and semi-finished products in recent months, fuelled by lower overseas prices.

Its overall imports of steel products had jumped 59.6% in the first eight months of 2020 compared with same period year earlier.

He Wenbo, chairman of the CISA told at the conference to “correctly understand” recent net imports of crude steel and to take new measures amid turbulent international situation to safeguard industry benefits.

“In the long run, trade remedy is a double-edged sword,” the steel body cited He in the statement. “The fundamental solution is to enhance companies’ competitiveness. There’s large room to lower institutional cost.”

IPL 2020 RCB Full Squad: Royal Challengers Bangalore Full Player List

Virat Kohli's led Royal Challengers Bangalore hopes to lift the trophy with their 'most balanced side ever' and end the title jinx

IPL 2020 RCB Full Squad: Royal Challengers Bangalore Full Player List

With a disappointing performance in the previous editions of Indian Premier Leagues, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will be back in action with a strong will to dominate the tournament this year. While Virat Kohli will lead the team, as usual, the team will be playing under the head coach Simon Katich.

The RCB is a franchise cricket team based in Bangalore, Karnataka. It was founded in 2008 by United Spirits and named after the company’s liquor brand, Royal Challenge. The home ground for the team is M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Banglore.

While the team has failed to secure the title, they have ended up as the runners-up three times between 2009 and 2016. Surprisingly, RCB also holds the records of both the highest and the lowest totals in the IPL, with the highest being 263/5 and the lowest at 49.

The team’s icon player in 2008 was none other than The Wall aka Rahul Dravid. The team also had Anil Kumble in their squad once.

The Indian Premier League is taking place in UAE this year. The series was initially scheduled to be played in India during March. However, as the condition deteriorated due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament was shifted overseas.

It is now scheduled to begin from September 19. The last match of the IPL 2020 will be played on November 10.

Team RCB’s first outing of the season is scheduled against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The match will be played on September 21 at 7.30 pm IST. The outing will take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

As RCB are set to try their best to win the IPL 2020, here is the team squad which will entertain the team’s supporters.

Uptick Noticed In June,July Has Levelled Off: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said economic recovery is likely to be gradual

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday that the uptick noticed in the economy in the June-July period seems to have levelled off. The RBI Governor was addressing members of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICC) at the industry body's National Executive Committee meeting. His remarks come days after official data showed consumer inflation in the country eased marginally in August, but remained above the central bank's target range of 4-6 per cent for the fifth month in a row. That supported views of many economists that the RBI will avoid easing monetary policy further in its scheduled, bi-monthly review, due in October. Meanwhile, the country's GDP or gross domestic product crashed a record 23.9 per cent in the April-June period, as restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic hurt an economy already struggling against low demand and weakness in key sectors.

Here are highlights of what RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said:

  • Uptick which was noticed in June and July appears to have levelled off in few sectors
  • Recovery likely to be gradual
  • Liquidity lines opened to financial institutions such as NABARD have flown to small non-banking financial companies, cooperative banks, other institutions
  • RBI closely monitoring economic situation, will act accordingly

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
  • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.

Simon Reeve: Channel Seven presenter sues the TV station over payout | Daily Mail Online

EXCLUSIVE: Channel Seven's 'Mr Nice Guy' sues the TV network for a payout after he was quietly boned after 20 years - in contrast to the celebrated departure of his Sunrise couch buddy Melissa Doyle

  • Veteran Channel Seven presenter Simon Reeve has launched court action
  • Reeve, 59, was axed by the network in June amid the economic downturn
  • Daily Mail understands he's suing for an unspecified termination payout
  • Seven will be defending the payout and will argue he has 'changed his tune'
  • Network celebrated his ex-Sunrise couch buddy Mel when she left this month

When Sunrise presenter Melissa Doyle became the latest casualty of cost-cutting at Channel Seven, both the TV star and network executives issued statements praising one another.

But things weren't so rosy for other well-known faces caught up in the network's recent axings.

Doyle's one-time buddy on the Sunrise couch, presenter Simon Reeve, is suing Seven in the Federal Court after he was boned in June.

Lawyers for Reeve, 59 - the sports presenter on Weekend Sunrise and host of Million Dollar Minute and It's Academic - filed a statement of claim late last week.

Reeve, known as one of the network's 'nice guys', had been with Seven for two decades in one role or another when he was shown the door - as the economic downturn ravages Australian TV businesses.

Daily Mail Australia understands the presenter's lawsuit is about entitlements he believes should have been paid out when he was let go.

At the heart of the legal dispute is whether he was an employee of Seven - as Reeve argues he was - or an independent contractor at the time.

Seven will be defending the case and is expected to argue Reeve had 'changed his tune' on being a contractor after being axed.

No dollar figure has been placed on the lawsuit.

It sets the stage for what could be the highest-profile court stoush Seven has faced since the network and former CEO Tim Worner's executive assistant Amber Harrison sued one another in 2017.

Both Seven and Reeve's lawyers declined to comment, with a court date yet to be set.

It has been a year of bloodshed in the TV industry with big names shown the door at both Seven and Network 10.

By far the biggest departure so far is Doyle's. She issued a statement upon her departure where she singled out Seven chairman Kerry Stokes for his support.

'I am incredibly proud of the work I have done and appreciative of the trust and warmth our viewers have shown me.

'I want to thank the consummate professionals I have worked with along the way, in particular our chairman Kerry Stokes for his constant support.

'I leave Seven with a great deal of pride, satisfaction and gratitude.'

Seven CEO James Warburton thanked the former Sunrise host for 'everything she's done for the Seven Network.'

'Melissa has deserved every success that's come her way'.

There was no such song and dance for Reeve - who started his career at Seven in Western Australia in 1979.

Meanwhile, Ten has axed state-based bulletins in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, as well as legendary weatherman Tim Bailey - who worked there for 29 years.

DAILY POST reports that four suspected Internet fraudsters (Yahoo boy) got involved in an accident while being chased by the men of Joint Task Force on Tuesday evening in Osogbo.

Three persons were rushed to the hospital why the other died on the spot.

The accident occurred at the East bypass when the Toyota Corolla with registration number KUJ-553LY Abuja – conveying the suspected Yahoo boys veered off the road during the chase and hit electricity poll.

In a statement signed by the States’ Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, he said the governor, Oyetola, expressed shock over the incident and the disruption that followed.

He asked the State Command of the Nigeria Police to get to the bottom of the matter.

According to the state governor, nobody has a right under the laws to take a life, saying that all lives matter in the State.

US President Donald Trump Accuses Democratic Opponent Joe Biden Of Using Drugs

"He's Taking Something": Donald Trump Accuses Joe Biden Of Using Drugs

Donald Trump repeated his demand that his Democratic opponent Joe Biden should undergo a drug test before their first of three presidential debates scheduled for September 29.

'He's Taking Something': Donald Trump Accuses Joe Biden Of Using Drugs

Washington:

US President Donald Trump, in his latest shredding of political niceties, suggested Tuesday that his Democratic opponent Joe Biden has taken drugs to improve his performance in debates.

The Republican, who is well behind in national polls, initially insinuated during a Fox News interview that "something was strange" with what he saw as Biden's improvement during the Democratic primary season debates.

Early on, when there were multiple Democratic candidates lined up on stage, Biden was "a disaster" and "grossly incompetent," Trump said. But at a later debate where Biden was one-on-one with leftist rival Bernie Sanders, "he was OK."

Trump told Fox he didn't want to say what he thought was the reason for the improvement.

Seconds later, he did.

"He's taking something (that) you know, gives him some clarity, or whatever," he said.

Trump repeated his demand that Biden should undergo a drug test before their first of three presidential debates scheduled for September 29.

"I would take one too," he said.

Biden responded by telling a Florida radio station "I'm looking forward to the debate and he's a fool. The comments are just foolish."

Trump, 74, has for months tried to persuade voters that Biden, 77, is suffering from mental decline.

The former businessman cites Biden's penchant for gaffes -- which some believe to be linked to the Democrat's lifelong struggle with stuttering -- and his reluctance to face unscripted questioning from reporters.

Trump -- who takes questions from reporters almost daily but is known for his own frequently garbled and baffling statements -- said, "Joe is lost. We can't have a president that is mentally lost."

Trump told Fox that, with attacks from the Democrat side gaining intensity, he will now "take the gloves off."

Loan Moratorium Policy: Valuable Short-term Solution Depending On Pace Of Economic Recovery

While the loan moratorium was an appropriate short-term choice, its medium-term value will depend on shape and pace of economic recovery.

The provision of moratorium on long-term loans is a measure that the Reserve Bank of India has implemented for “easing financial stress caused by COVID-19 disruption by relaxing payment pressures” on households and businesses. All major lenders are permitted to defer the recovery of dues, by voluntarily extending the loan tenor. Along with the provision to provide unprecedented liquidity on tap to the lenders, the moratorium provision is expected to help households, firms and the financial system manage their cash flows.

Moratorium Is Only A Cash Flow Management Tool

We need to recognise that, if agreed to by the lender, the moratorium provision gives time to the borrower to re-allocate his or her cashflows. It does not help augment the cash flows in most cases. It can help augment the cash flows only for those borrowers who are in a position to repay and choose not to, as they can invest their cash in a business that gives them a return higher than the cost of debt. In other words, it is of limited value to borrowers whose cash flows have shrunk as a result of fall in their earnings.

Lenders Are Expected To Benefit If Credit Worthiness Of Borrowers Does Not Decline

In a falling interest rate scenario, the lenders are definitely benefited by delay in recovery of dues, as they can raise debt at a rate lower than the rate at which they have lent to the borrowers who are opting to delay their payment under the moratorium policy. However, the deterioration in credit worthiness of these borrowers can impact the lender’s margins, particularly if they end up with credit losses once the moratorium is lifted.

Value of Moratorium Dependent On The Pace Of Economic Recovery

Since the moratorium is only a cash flow management tool, it loses its effectiveness if the borrowers’ earnings or cash flows don’t improve soon enough. If the economic recovery is not V-shaped or there is a structural shift in growth to a lower level, we can expect a sharp increase in NPAs once the moratorium period ends.

India’s Economic Performance And Growth In Household Disposable Income

At this stage, we have experienced an unprecedented collapse in earnings, which was preceded by a prolonged slowdown since Q4 of fiscal year 2017-18.

Not only the recent slowdown and the collapse in GDP growth rates, the country has been experiencing a declining growth in household disposable income (Data Source: National Accounts Statistics and the RBI’s Data Base on the Indian Economy) since 2010, which has also coincided with a decline in growth rate in household savings (except for the last couple of years).

Systemwide Decline In Credit Quality And Its Impact Of Economic Recovery and Cost of Credit

A prolonged slow-growth period could also lead to a systemwide downward revision in credit ratings for businesses and households, as the banks and credit bureaus start evaluating the impact of economic uncertainty on earnings and cash flows, particularly the ones that have opted for moratorium. A systemwide decline in credit quality would imply higher cost of credit and lower willingness to lend, thereby reducing the probability of sharper recovery. It is, therefore, important that all the players in the financial sector value chain (lenders, credit bureaus, credit insurers, etc.) and the RBI look at the problem of credit quality from a long-term perspective and follow a unified approach to credit assessment and NPA classification.

In summary, while the loan moratorium was an appropriate short-term choice, its medium-term value will depend on shape and pace of economic recovery, particularly for those businesses and households whose earnings and cash flows have fallen sharply -- and in a context, where the GDP growth rate has been declining for nearly 2 years and the growth in household disposable income has been experiencing a near-secular decline.

Covid-19 Pandemic To Cost Football 14 Billion USD This Year, Says FIFA

Football (Photo Credit: AIFF)

Football (Photo Credit: AIFF)

FIFA has allocated $1.5 billion to help tackle the effects of the pandemic and 150 of the 211 member associations had so far applied for funds.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 7:09 PM IST

BERN: The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to cost club football $14 billion this year worldwide, around one third of its value, a leading official at global soccer body FIFA said on Wednesday.

Olli Rehn, who heads the FIFA committee set up to tackle the effects of the pandemic, said that FIFA, along with financial consultants, had estimated the club game to be worth between $40 billion and $45 billion worldwide.

He said the figure of $14 billion was based on the current scenario, where football is slowly restarting after a three-month hiatus earlier this year, but it would be a “different ball game” if the pandemic did not let up.

“Football has been hit very hard by the coronavirus pandemic,” Rehn, a former EU commissioner and now governor of the Bank of Finland, told Reuters television.

“It has created plenty of turmoil at different levels with some professional clubs facing very serious difficulties. I’m also very concerned about youth academies and lower division clubs.”

Rehn said that football in South America had been especially hard hit, while Africa and Asia were also a concern.

“It is a real danger that the good work that has been done developing football in Asia and Africa could be ruined, so we want to soften the blow and maintain the development that has been done,” he said.

FIFA has allocated $1.5 billion to help tackle the effects of the pandemic and Rehn said 150 of the 211 member associations had so far applied for funds.

He said that, while football was slowly re-awakening, another downturn could not be ruled out.

“The critical thing will be whether a vaccine will be developed and can be used, and that we have medical and other means to fully contain and tame the pandemic, and that is uncertain,” he said.

“We cannot rule out worse developments and that would be another ball game if the pandemic were to continue in a severe form next year. Now we are working on the basis of the current scenario.”

The Acer Nitro V AN515-51 offers the combination of an Intel Core i7 7700HQ with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 (4 GB) at a very attractive price point. It’s this configuration and Acer’s aggressive pricing that should see the Nitro V turning out to be one of the most popular gaming laptops under Rs.1 lakh.

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51 detailed review

Acer’s been on a roll of late with a slew of gaming laptops being released under its many different sub-brands. We’ve seen the infamous Acer Predator 21 X at Computex and that laptop is a one of kind machine that’s only matched by the ASUS GX800 in terms of sheer overkill. For gaming, Acer has the premium lineup which falls under the Predator brand and then there are the more mainstream gaming laptops which come under the Aspire V/VX and Nitro brands. The Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop which we’re looking at today is one such device which while being mainstream also gives you plenty of hardware to game with. This is attested by the NVIDIA GTX 1050 along with an Intel Core i7 7700HQ CPU that power this rather sleek looking device.

We’re glad to see more brands jump onto the gaming bandwagon in India, especially in the form of gaming laptops which have had just a few players so far. Late 2016 and early 2017 has been really good for the PC industry in terms of technological gains and the Acer Nitro V uses two of these innovations – Intel Kaby Lake 7700HQ CPU and the NVIDIA GTX 1050. Now, as we’ve mentioned earlier, there are multiple brands selling gaming laptops in India, so we now have see who offers the right balance of gaming performance and affordability without cutting corners.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 Specifications

The Acer Nitro V AN515-51 (NH.Q2RSI.002) positions itself as more affordable compared to the competing brands. Let’s explore that by checking out the specifications of the review unit that we’ve received. The exact configuration can be seen selling on Flipkart for Rs.89,990.

These make for a fairly good feature set for the given pricing as most of the competition seems to charge a little extra, we need to have a look inside the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 to learn more about its build quality and to see if the reduced pricing has led to any corners cut.

Chassis Build

Let’s start off with the bottom assembly of the Acer Nitro V AN515-51. We see that Acer has given provision for two hatches, the one on the right opens up to the RAM DIMMs and the one of the left is for the hard drive. This particular unit also comes with an M.2 SSD from Kingston and that is inaccessible via either of these hatches. So if you wanted more SSD storage capacity, to say, shift some of your more games with massive levels, then upgrading to a higher capacity SSD will require you to void the warranty and open the entire base panel.

There’s no dearth of intake vents on the bottom as we can see in the image below and the exhaust is towards the rear. In either case, this is a better approach to some of the other configurations that we’ve seen wherein the exhaust flows out via the sides and smacks you on your hands. Towards the lower end of the image you can see two sets of vents for the speakers, so we’re either looking at 2 or 4 speakers in total, we’ll see the actual configuration in a while. And lastly, the rubber feet are quite large to provide ample amount of grip and seem to be glued pretty well to the base.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 Underside bottom

Once we’ve opened the chassis, things get a lot clearer. Let’s begin with an overview. They Acer Nitro V AN515-51 uses a unified cooler consisting of two heatpipes to channel heat away from the GPU and the CPU. It’s not ideal as we prefer individual cooling for both components to prevent one heating the other unnecessarily. However, we can see why Acer has gone for the unified design owing to the lower price point.

The mainboard doesn’t take up much space and the positioning of the CPU and GPU towards the top i.e. away from your hands is ideal to have a lower touch temperature. The lower left corner is occupied by the HDD which has been removed in this image. We feel that the access hatch for the RAM could have been widened to accommodate the SSD as well since they’re so close to each other.

Towards the top left, we see the daughterboard for the USB and audio I/O. Since we’re operating off battery power, having the audio signal cables next to the power input seems fine. However, they could have been routed better in this case.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 bottom open

We see a fairly simple VRM circuitry on the laptop. With most of the heavy lifting taken care off by the voltage adapter and the lack of OC ability, a 3+1 phase VRM (OnSemi NCP81205) as we see here is sufficient. There’s an ENE KB9022Q D for the SIO which seems to be an upgrade over the KB9012Q that has been really common thus far. Right beside it is the HM175 PCH which appears to be naked without any sort of protection. While there is no need for protection as long as the laptop chassis remains closed, gaming laptops appeal to the enthusiast crowd who’re more likely to perform manual upgrades. With this in mind, a simple shield over the PCH would have been ideal.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 heatsink

Moving on to the exhaust vents for the heatsink, we find a fairly common high-density fin structure. The two fan system will certainly help with faster heat dissipation.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 CPU cooler

The hinge appears to be heavy duty with three screws to secure it on either end. The webcam I/O and display FRC cables are routed through either hinge with the FRC being rolled up to provide durability. Openly kept FRC often tends to crinkle and tear over years of usage and rolling it up and putting it within a sheath will certainly help. We noticed next to no wobbling of the display panel when opened up, so that speaks for the quality of the hinge. We can’t say what will happen in the long run but this is one of the better ones we’ve seen.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 hinge

The speakers on the other hand, do disappoint a little in terms of audio quality. What we liked was the down firing setup is better for maintaining an audible output when used on hard surfaces but keep it on your lap and there’s the obvious muffling that comes into play. To avoid this, we see grilles on the front which channel audio from the speakers should you place the laptop on your lap. Perhaps, adding an extra driver for the lower frequencies would have helped with the overall sound quality.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 speakers

Lastly, we have the battery pack which is rated for 3090 mAh which makes it 46 watt-hour at 17.2 volts. This happens to be pretty standard for all the laptops in this segment. Overall, we’ve seen that the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 has a pretty standard design that most laptops in this segment feature.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keys on the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 are chiclet with a convenient amount of spacing between them. This 19 mm standard is the optimal spacing that we look for as it results in a lot fewer mistakes creeping in while typing. The keys aren’t RGB and we really couldn’t care about RGB at this point. It brings a level of customisability that is appreaciated by quite a lot of people but a simple backlight like we see here is just fine.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 keyboard

As for the TouchPad, it’s 10.6 cms wide and 7.8 cms tall with no separate physical buttons. The texture is a smooth matte finish that doesn’t catch your skin should your finger get a little sweaty. The entire assembly is quite rigid with very little flexing. We’d say it’s just enough to ensure you don’t end up with a cracked chassis after a minor tumble. We experienced no issues while using different gestures on the TrackPad during our everyday testing.

I/O ports

It’s nice to see USB Type-C ports becoming more common on laptops these days regardless of the class or segment. On the left side of the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 we see a Gigabit Ethernet port with a spring hatch, the Type-C USB port, an HDMI port, USB 3.1 port and a card reader slot. On the other side are two USB ports, a 3.5 mm audio jack and the power input.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 I/O ports

We prefer I/O ports to be gold plated to avoid corrosion and most of the ports on the Nitro V aren’t, however, the audio jack is, which is a good thing to have since a corrosion on the audio jack becomes easily noticeable when you plug something in. Also, the SD card reader slot didn’t come with a cover in our review unit. We’re unaware if the retail unit comes with one.

Display

Like many Acer laptops, the Nitro V AN515-51 we have features a BOE Hydis panel (NV156FHM-N43). In this case, it’s an a-Si panel so we’re assuming it to be of similar calibre as we’ve seen earlier. Spec-wise, this means it’ll have a 800:1 contrast ratio and a 30 ms (Tr+Td) response time. As for the backlight, this particular panel uses a WLED lamp. It should be noted that not all AN515-51 will come with the same panel, we’ve observed that Acer also uses Chi Mei panels in the same model.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 display panel

The viewing angles are pretty good and the contrast levels make six of the topmost of the blocks in Lagom.nl’s Black Level test page appear the same. However, the White Saturation page had each and every block is clearly different from the others. It has a vertical stripe RGB sub-pixel layout and Acer’s default rendering ensures a smooth and crisp text across the screen.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 webcam

The OEM for the webcam is Chicony and we couldn’t get any more details regarding the specific model since it isn’t listed anywhere. All we can say is that it does capture 720p images and video with a 24-bit depth and a lot of noise as you can see from the image captured below.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 webcam test image

The display lid goes back quite a bit, we’d say it’s about 140 degrees. This adds a level of flexibility with usage scenarios as you can pretty much lay down with the laptop on your lap and still have the display panel remain upright. Perfect for a few casual gaming sessions on a lazy sunday when getting out of bed is least optimal.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 lid angle

The backside of the panel is supported by a layer of thick foam which aside from being sturdy also allows for a just about enough flex. There is no fancy illuminated logo on the back so we don’t see any extra wires running across the middle like we’ve seen with the Predator models.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 display disassembled

We didn’t see any bleeding across the panel, be it spots or a huge crescent creeping in from one of the sides. However, colour accuracy isn’t high enough that you’d end up using this for Adobe Photoshop or any other multimedia editing scenario. Overall, the panel is quite average for an IPS panel. It’s anyday better than most TN and VA panels but some of the more expensive models tend to have lower refresh rates than this one.

Performance

We’re looking at a very common configuration with the Acer Nitro V AN515-51. The Intel Core i7 7700HQ coupled with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 2400 MHz ensure a pretty high headroom for most mundane tasks. Throw in an NVIDIA GTX 1050 (4 GB) and you have a gaming laptop that can crunch out upwards of 40 FPS at High settings in most AAA games. The more recent ones tend to bring the 1050 down to its knees but we always advise a little bit to tweaking to bring out the most of your hardware.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 CPU-Z

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 CPU-Z

We started off with CineBench R11.5 and R15 and the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 scored 8.13 and 733 in those benchmarks, respectively. WinRAR’s compression benchmark scored 7822 KB/s which is very similar to the MSI GE62 7RE that we’ve tested earlier. As for PCMark8, we used Accelerated to leverage the GPU and ended up with a score of 4985 on PCMark8 Creative (Acc.), 3988 in PCMark8 Home (Acc.) and 4917 in PCMark8 Work (Acc.). It should be noted that there was a validation issue with the drivers obtained from Acer’s website but the scores lined up with similar configuration from competing models, so all’s well.

Storage

The Kingston SSDNow 128 GB managed to get 445.9 MB/s for read speeds and 361.9 MB/s for write speeds. Notably, 4K speeds were pretty good for a normal SSD. It’s nowhere close to NVMe speeds but in its class, you’re not going to find any NVMe SSDs anyways. Overall, we’d say that the SSD performs at par with most in its speed class.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 Anvil benchmark

Also, 128 GB is enough for your OS and a few extra apps, but as we mentioned earlier, 256 GB is what we prefer as the minimum. The other drive is a 1 TB WD Blue rated for 5400 RPM and we aren't going to bother with it since there’s hardly ever any difference in performance between 5400 RPM SKUs. Almost all of them feature a similar cache capacity and exhibit similar performance characteristics across different file sizes.

SD Card Reader

For the SD card reader, we use a 32 GB Lexar 1000x UHS-II SD card which easily gives 135 MB/s read speeds and 55 MB/s write speeds on USB 3.0 SD card readers and on the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 we managed to get about 32 MB/s. Though not exceptional, it’s more than sufficient to get the job done.

Wi-Fi

For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 makes use of the Qualcom Atheros QCNFA344A. It’s a dual band 802.11ac adapter that has a peak throughput of 300 Mb/s on the ‘n’ band and 867 Mb/s on the ‘ac’ band. We used iPerf to see how well the add-on card fared over the ‘ac’ band. We managed to get 514 Mbps on the throughput and about 76 Mbps via a single stream which is more than sufficient for gaming or otherwise.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 QCNFA344A Wi-Fi

It doesn’t feature a separate QoS solution to prioritise traffic, but you can always install one yourself and get the job done.

Gaming

A combination of the Intel Core i7 7700HQ with the NVIDIA GTX 1050 is quite powerful, however, a better configuration would be to have the Core i5 7300HQ with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti. Surprisingly, Acer has that model available for Rs.74,999 which makes it the lowest priced laptop with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti. Coming back to what we have on hand, we started with the trusty 3DMark with the latest NVIDIA drivers (384.94). We managed to get 5514 in Fire Strike 1.1, 2659 in Fire Strike Extreme and 1228 in Fire Strike Ultra. With the NVIDIA GTX 1050 set to 1354 MHz, these scores are at par and sometimes even higher by a few points.

Acer Nitro V AN515-51 Fire Strike

In TimeSpy, we scored 1790 and for the sake of reference, we also ran Ice Storm, Cloud Gate and Sky Diver. Our scores were 101023, 20261 and 17007, respectively.

Moving on to games, Rise of the Tomb Raider had a pretty decent on both, high and medium settings. On high, we got 46.68 and on medium it was 50.84 FPS. With DOOM, we got 45 FPS in Ultra and in GTA V on High, we managed to get 66 FPS.

Pricing

There are quite a few units in the market that provide a similar hardware configuration. There’s the MSI GP62 7RDX for Rs.112,990, the Dell Inspiron 7567 for Rs.115,469, ASUS ROG GL553VD for Rs.87,299, Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN at Rs.92,490 and HP Omen 15 AX250TX for Rs.106,990. All of these feature the Intel Core i7 7700HQ, NVIDIA GTX 1050 4 GB, 128 GB SSD and a 1 TB hard drive. The ASUS GL553VD is the closest that comes to this configuration but it has only 8 GB of RAM against the 16 GB that the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 has. The Legion Y520 has the same configuration as the ASUS SKU but it costs a little extra and almost every other competing laptop costs Rs.17,000 or more. Essentially, we’re hard pressed to find a better deal than the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 for its configuration. Moreover, the other Nitro V SKU has a 1050 Ti at 75K which was unbeatable in terms of pricing at the time of writing this review.

Verdict

The Acer Nitro V AN515-51 offers the combination of an Intel Core i7 7700HQ with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 (4 GB) at a very attractive price point. It’s this configuration and Acer’s aggressive pricing that should see the Nitro V turning out to be one of the most popular gaming laptops under Rs.1 lakh. Sure, most of the components perform at par with what the competition has, be it in terms of compute performance or gaming performance, and Acer could certainly have worked out on a few improvements to the build quality (such as widening the RAM access hatch and shielding the PCH) that we’ve mentioned throughout the review. But all those would be considered as nitpicking giving how low Acer is pricing the Nitro V AN515-51. In fact, we bid you the best of luck to find a better deal than the Acer Nitro V AN515-51 at Rs.89,990.

A good option for selfie enthusiasts wanting a phone with high quality front camera along with a lot of tricks that make your selfies even better. Micromax Canvas Selfie detailed review

The term Selfie can be defined as a self-photograph taken by a camera phone or any handheld camera. Today, ‘selfie’ has almost become a household term, with everyone posting selfies of almost every place they’ve been, the self obsession is very obviously an opportunity that smartphone makers are pouncing on.

Micromax Canvas Selfie is their serious and focussed attempt on launching a selfie special smartphone. With 13 megapixel front camera, the Micromax Canvas Selfie is betting big on the megapixel way of judging a camera. And, the number play continues onto the processor as well, you get an Octa-core processor to support the 13MP camera. So, will more be merrier for the Micromax Canvas Selfie? Let’s find out!

Build & Design

Micromax’s build quality has hugely improved over the years and the Canvas Selfie is a pretty good example of that. The presence of a Gorilla Glass 3, a non removable back adds up to the phone’s sturdy build. All three physical buttons, power, volume rocker and the camera button feel and look well machined and have a nice click to them.

Moving on to the design, the phone is definitely a looker. Unlike being a regular rectangular slab, the Canvas Selfie features a curved top and bottom. This gives a nice design touch, reminds me of an old Motorola phone, the ROKR E8. Saying that, the enormous bezels at the top and bottom of the phone could have been minimized.

The front the display is well hidden when unlit giving the Canvas Selfie a nice mirror like sheen. The large camera at the back along with the dual flash may not go down well with some people, but it does make the phone look different. Overall, the Micromax Canvas Selfie is a sturdily built phone with some interesting design choices that make the phone stand-out from the regular pack of mid-range smartphones.

Display & UI

The 720p, 4.7-inch display on the Micromax Canvas Selfie looks good on paper but I found the display to be dim. Even on full brightness the screen failed to pop in terms of color and vibrance. Viewing angles and outside legibility are okay and the display is more at par with phones that are a segment below.

UI is another area where the phone disappoints. The custom UI is a step back from the spartan stock Android Micromax was offering on its previous phones. The UI feels cluttered and could be disorienting for existing Micromax users.

Performance

The Micromax canvas Selfie has the same MediaTek 6592 SoC as the one we saw on the Micromax Canvas Nitro. They even perform almost at par, hence the performance is satisfactory for its price segment, though not class leading by any stretch of imagination. And with 2GB of RAM on board, the phone does not feel bogged down on heavy usage or multitasking, there is enough room in terms of a smooth user experience even after you fill it up with dozens of apps.

Check the synthetic benchmarks of the Micromax Canvas Selfie compared against Micromax Canvas Nitro and Huawei Honor 6

Benchmark Comparsion | Create infographics

Call quality is good and the sound quality via the built-in speakers is fairly loud. During my review period, the Micromax Canvas Selfie largely stayed manageable in terms of device temperature. Though prolonged gaming and camera usage can cause the device to quickly heat-up. An issue I also observed with the Micromax Canvas Nitro.

Camera & Battery

The smartphone boasts a 13MP camera at the rear and a 13 MP camera at the front and both camera sensors are made by Sony. Bringing the focus back on the star of the show (for Micromax), the 13MP front facing shooter for capturing selfies. I found pictures taken by the camera in suitable lighting to be good. While details and sharpness levels were good and noise levels were kept in control on most occasions, the colours felt a bit oversaturated. Images taken in low-light came out well in terms of overall quality, though the noise level was on the higher side, a typical case of low-light pics from small sensors that invariably results in ISO levels being pushed to the max to maintain fast shutter response..

The Canvas Selfie features software tricks to ‘beautify’ faces. The software makes your eyes larger, whitens the skin, slims down the face, removes oiliness and more. There is a entire range of make-up (editing) options as well. All of these features are available on both cameras which can used or applied and they work to an extent only. So, Whether you see it as an advantage or stuff that you’d rather live without is an individual choice. Overall, inspite of having its fair share of negatives, given its price-point, the Micromax Canvas Selfie is a good phone for SELFIE ENTHUSIASTS. The Micromax phone is priced a lot lower than HTC Desire Eye, the current champion of ‘selfie phones’. At 1/3rd the price, the Canvas Selfie offers a lot of value for selfie lovers. Though, you also need to consider the fact that the other aspects of the device aren’t class leading for its category and keeping the selfie aspect aside, you will find better phones in this price range.

Images taken by the rear 13MP camera delivered a similar result to the front-facing camera but with slightly better images at times. Pictures looked warmer with slight oversaturation and the only down side to the camera is the low-light performance. The dual-LED flash does help in low light but use of flash is recommended for situations when the subject is at a reasonable distance from the lens, ensuring images don’t end-up being over-blown due to the excessive light

One thing to add is that the phone heats up like a pan while using the camera. This was odd since it didn’t heat up as much when I played games on it.

The battery is another low point of the phone. In my battery test the smartphone was able to last just over five hours. When I used the phone as a daily driver with normal usage, the battery was out of juice by evening, which is not good enough by any standards.

Bottomline

The Micromax Canvas Selfie skimps on every other feature except the front-facing camera. So, if you want a “selfie” phone in a budget, this is your best choice but if you want more than that you should look elsewhere.

EU Chief Executive Calls For Unity To Get Europe Back On Its Feet

The EU's chief executive on Wednesday painted a sober picture of Europe grappling with a pandemic and its deepest recession in its history, but laid out ambitious goals to make the 27nation bloc more resilient and united to confront future crises.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:24 PM IST

BRUSSELS: The EU’s chief executive on Wednesday painted a sober picture of Europe grappling with a pandemic and its deepest recession in its history, but laid out ambitious goals to make the 27-nation bloc more resilient and united to confront future crises.

In her annual State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen doubled down on the flagship goals she set out on taking office last December: urgent action to tackle climate change and a digital revolution.

She unveiled a plan to cut the European Union’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030, up from an existing target of 40%, and pledged to use green bonds to finance its climate goals.

“There is no more urgent need for acceleration than when it comes to the future of our fragile planet,” the former German cabinet minister told the European Parliament.

“While much of the world’s activity froze during lockdowns and shutdowns, the planet continued to get dangerously hotter.”

Von der Leyen also called for greater investment in technology for Europe to compete more keenly with China and the United States, and said the EU would invest 20% of a 750 billion euro economic recovery fund in digital projects.

Officials said that, far from backing off the plans she laid out at the beginning of her term because of the coronavirus crisis, von der Leyen believes they will be key to Europe’s long-term economic and political survival.

The EU has been buffeted for years by crises, from the financial meltdown of 2008 to feuds over migration and the protracted saga of Britain’s exit from the bloc.

Solidarity among the 27 member states frayed badly at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when countries refused to share protective medical kit with those worst-affected and closed borders without consultation to prevent the spread of the virus.

The bloc’s leaders also jousted for months over a joint plan to rescue their coronavirus-throttled economies.

But in July they agreed on a stimulus plan that paved the way for the European Commission to raise billions of euros on capital markets on behalf of them all, an unprecedented act of solidarity in almost seven decades of European integration.

Von der Leyen told the EU assembly that “this is the moment for Europe” to trust each other and stand together.

“The moment for Europe to lead the way from this fragility towards a new vitality,” she said. “I say this because in the last months we have rediscovered the value of what we hold in common … We turned fear and division between Member States into confidence in our Union.”

CHANCES FOR A BREXIT DEAL FADING

Turning to the troubled talks with London on the future relationship between the world’s fifth-largest economy and biggest trading bloc, von der Leyen said every passing day reduces chances for sealing a new trade deal.

She stressed that both the EU and Britain negotiated and ratified their Brexit divorce deal and warned the UK, which has proposed a bill that would breach elements of the pact, that it “cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or dis-applied”.

“This is a matter of law, trust and good faith… Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership,” she said.

She said EU states must be quicker in their foreign policy to support pro-democracy protests in Belarus or to stand up to Russia and Turkey.

“Why are even simple statements on EU values delayed, watered down or held hostage for other motives?” she asked.

“When member states say Europe is too slow, I say to them be courageous and finally move to qualified majority voting,” she said, referring to blockages over finding unanimity among the EU’s 27 states.
