Sleep apnoea linked to poorer outcomes from COVID-19, study finds

Image

A systematic review of studies by researchers at the University of Warwick has found that people who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea could be at an increased risk of adverse outcomes from COVID-19.

The review, published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, emphasises the need for further research into the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, on those with the sleep condition.

The systematic review looked at eighteen studies performed up to June 2020, all of which investigated the relationship between sleep apnoea and COVID-19. Of these studies, eight were mainly related to the risk of death from COVID-19 and ten were related to diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep apnoea.

Despite there being only a few studies specifically looking at COVID-19 and sleep apnoea, the researchers found there is evidence to suggest that many patients in intensive care for COVID-19 had the sleep condition, and in diabetic patients it may exacerbate a risk that is independent from other risk factors.

In one study of patients who had diabetes who were hospitalised with COVID-19, patients who were being treated for obstructive sleep apnoea were at 2.8 times a greater risk of dying on the seventh day after hospital admission.

According to the researchers, in the UK up to 85% of obstructive sleep apnoea disorders are undetected, suggesting that the 1.5 million people currently diagnosed with the condition is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Without a clear picture of how many people have obstructive sleep apnoea it is difficult to determine exactly how many people with the condition may have experienced worse outcomes due to COVID-19,” said Dr Michelle Miller, lead author of the study.

“This condition is greatly underdiagnosed, and we don’t know whether undiagnosed sleep apnoea confers an even greater risk or not.

“It is likely that COVID-19 increases oxidative stress and inflammation and has effects on the bradykinin pathways, all of which are also affected in obstructive sleep apnoea patients. When you have individuals in which these mechanisms are already affected, it wouldn’t be surprising that COVID-19 affects them more strongly,” she added.

Tottenham coach, Mourinho speaks on signing Gareth Bale

Published

on

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, has insisted that he tried to sign winger, Gareth Bale, for Real Madrid before the Welsh international made the switch from Spurs.

Mourinho also refused to confirm reports he wants to bring Bale back to Tottenham this summer.

Bale, 31, joined Madrid in 2013, the same summer Mourinho departed the La Liga champions after three years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I do not comment on hypothetical stuff. Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid player,” Mourinho said when asked about Tottenham’s interest in Bale at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Thursday.

“It is not my job to have contact with agents, I do not want to comment on that, especially on players at other clubs.

“I tried to sign him for Real Madrid, which was not possible during my time there. But the president followed my instinct and followed my knowledge and the season I left he brought Gareth to the club.

“That’s no secret and Gareth knows that.”

China Steel Sector Sees Higher Demand In Second Half, Calls To Fend Off Import Surges

Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:54 PM IST

BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Chinese major steel producers had suggested to prevent sharp increase in imports of the industrial metals and to relax purchase of overseas steel scrap, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said on Wednesday.

Nine steelmakers, including the biggest China Baowu Steel Group, Shougang Group and Ansteel Group raised concerns on the steel market amid the coronavirus disruptions and rising production costs, the companies said at a conference held by the CISA on Sept.9.

“The steel sector will see increasing demand, sufficient supply, easing but still high inventories, falling but stabilising performance in the second half of the year,” the steel body cited the companies as saying.

The steel mills had advised the association to strengthen monitoring of steel trade, push forward mergers and reorganisations and ease raw material supply and demand pressure.

China’s steel sector has bucked the trend of global sluggish demand due to the pandemic in 2020, supported by a raft of economic stimulus such as infrastructure investments, but also dented by increasing raw material prices and imports.

The world’s top metals consumer ramped up purchases of hot-rolled coils and semi-finished products in recent months, fuelled by lower overseas prices.

Its overall imports of steel products had jumped 59.6% in the first eight months of 2020 compared with same period year earlier.

He Wenbo, chairman of the CISA told at the conference to “correctly understand” recent net imports of crude steel and to take new measures amid turbulent international situation to safeguard industry benefits.

“In the long run, trade remedy is a double-edged sword,” the steel body cited He in the statement. “The fundamental solution is to enhance companies’ competitiveness. There’s large room to lower institutional cost.”

Virat Kohli's led Royal Challengers Bangalore hopes to lift the trophy with their 'most balanced side ever' and end the title jinx

IPL 2020 RCB Full Squad: Royal Challengers Bangalore Full Player List

With a disappointing performance in the previous editions of Indian Premier Leagues, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will be back in action with a strong will to dominate the tournament this year. While Virat Kohli will lead the team, as usual, the team will be playing under the head coach Simon Katich.

The RCB is a franchise cricket team based in Bangalore, Karnataka. It was founded in 2008 by United Spirits and named after the company’s liquor brand, Royal Challenge. The home ground for the team is M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Banglore.

While the team has failed to secure the title, they have ended up as the runners-up three times between 2009 and 2016. Surprisingly, RCB also holds the records of both the highest and the lowest totals in the IPL, with the highest being 263/5 and the lowest at 49.

The team’s icon player in 2008 was none other than The Wall aka Rahul Dravid. The team also had Anil Kumble in their squad once.

The Indian Premier League is taking place in UAE this year. The series was initially scheduled to be played in India during March. However, as the condition deteriorated due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament was shifted overseas.

It is now scheduled to begin from September 19. The last match of the IPL 2020 will be played on November 10.

Team RCB’s first outing of the season is scheduled against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The match will be played on September 21 at 7.30 pm IST. The outing will take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

As RCB are set to try their best to win the IPL 2020, here is the team squad which will entertain the team’s supporters.

Uptick Noticed In June,July Has Levelled Off: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said economic recovery is likely to be gradual

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday that the uptick noticed in the economy in the June-July period seems to have levelled off. The RBI Governor was addressing members of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICC) at the industry body's National Executive Committee meeting. His remarks come days after official data showed consumer inflation in the country eased marginally in August, but remained above the central bank's target range of 4-6 per cent for the fifth month in a row. That supported views of many economists that the RBI will avoid easing monetary policy further in its scheduled, bi-monthly review, due in October. Meanwhile, the country's GDP or gross domestic product crashed a record 23.9 per cent in the April-June period, as restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic hurt an economy already struggling against low demand and weakness in key sectors.

Here are highlights of what RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said:

  • Uptick which was noticed in June and July appears to have levelled off in few sectors
  • Recovery likely to be gradual
  • Liquidity lines opened to financial institutions such as NABARD have flown to small non-banking financial companies, cooperative banks, other institutions
  • RBI closely monitoring economic situation, will act accordingly

Google Doodle Asks People To Wear Mask And Save Lives Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The Google doodle shows all letters wearing face masks

To spread the awareness about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Google, through its animated doodle, today reminded people to wear a mask.

The doodle shows all letters wearing face masks of different colours and patterns. It also links to a series of steps that are aimed at preventing the spread of the deadly virus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
  • Calling in advance allows your healthcare provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you, and prevents the spread of viruses and other infections.

The link also gives information on how masks can help prevent the spread of the virus from the person wearing one to others. Masks alone do not protect against COVID-19, and should be combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Follow the advice provided by your local health authority.

Globally, as of Tuesday evening, there have been 29,155,581 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 926,544 deaths, WHO reported.

  • Veteran Channel Seven presenter Simon Reeve has launched court action
  • Reeve, 59, was axed by the network in June amid the economic downturn
  • Daily Mail understands he's suing for an unspecified termination payout
  • Seven will be defending the payout and will argue he has 'changed his tune'
  • Network celebrated his ex-Sunrise couch buddy Mel when she left this month

When Sunrise presenter Melissa Doyle became the latest casualty of cost-cutting at Channel Seven, both the TV star and network executives issued statements praising one another.

But things weren't so rosy for other well-known faces caught up in the network's recent axings.

Doyle's one-time buddy on the Sunrise couch, presenter Simon Reeve, is suing Seven in the Federal Court after he was boned in June.

Lawyers for Reeve, 59 - the sports presenter on Weekend Sunrise and host of Million Dollar Minute and It's Academic - filed a statement of claim late last week.

Reeve, known as one of the network's 'nice guys', had been with Seven for two decades in one role or another when he was shown the door - as the economic downturn ravages Australian TV businesses.

Daily Mail Australia understands the presenter's lawsuit is about entitlements he believes should have been paid out when he was let go.

At the heart of the legal dispute is whether he was an employee of Seven - as Reeve argues he was - or an independent contractor at the time.

Seven will be defending the case and is expected to argue Reeve had 'changed his tune' on being a contractor after being axed.

No dollar figure has been placed on the lawsuit.

It sets the stage for what could be the highest-profile court stoush Seven has faced since the network and former CEO Tim Worner's executive assistant Amber Harrison sued one another in 2017.

Both Seven and Reeve's lawyers declined to comment, with a court date yet to be set.

It has been a year of bloodshed in the TV industry with big names shown the door at both Seven and Network 10.

By far the biggest departure so far is Doyle's. She issued a statement upon her departure where she singled out Seven chairman Kerry Stokes for his support.

'For 25 years, I have called Channel 7 home,' she said. 'I've had the privilege to share stories that mattered, meet incredible people and be there for significant moments in history.

'I am incredibly proud of the work I have done and appreciative of the trust and warmth our viewers have shown me.

'I want to thank the consummate professionals I have worked with along the way, in particular our chairman Kerry Stokes for his constant support.

'I leave Seven with a great deal of pride, satisfaction and gratitude.'

Seven CEO James Warburton thanked the former Sunrise host for 'everything she's done for the Seven Network.'

'Melissa has deserved every success that's come her way'.

There was no such song and dance for Reeve - who started his career at Seven in Western Australia in 1979.

Meanwhile, Ten has axed state-based bulletins in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, as well as legendary weatherman Tim Bailey - who worked there for 29 years.
