Bhuvan Bam's ROFL Reply To CarryMinati's 'Bigg Boss' Clarification

CarryMinati and Bhuvan Bam's Twitter exchange has left many amused.

Social media star CarryMinati has refuted reports suggesting that he would take part in the 14th season of popular reality show Bigg Boss. CarryMinati aka Ajey Nagar took to Twitter this afternoon to clarify that he would not be stepping into the house of Bigg Boss - and it was fellow YouTuber Bhuvan Bam's response to his tweet that had thousands in splits.

Earlier this week, several reports surfaced online suggesting that CarryMinati - one of the most popular YouTubers in India with over 25.5 million subscribers - would be taking part in Bigg Boss 14. The Salman Khan-hosted reality show will premiere on Colors TV starting from October 3rd. While the official list of contestants is yet to be announced, CarryMinati has already clarified that he won't be one of them.

"I am not going in Bigg Boss!" he wrote on Twitter this afternoon. "Don't believe in everything you read," he added, urging his fans to discount reports suggesting that he would participate in the reality show.

While the clarification disappointed some of his fans, Bhuvan Bam - the man behind the hugely popular 'BB Ki Vines' YouTube channel - had a hilarious response. "Tu next year bhi jaayega. Jaise main pichle 4 saal se jaa raha hoon..(You will go next year too, like I have been going for the last four years)," he wrote, referring to his own experience of being placed on the list of rumoured Bigg Boss contestants.

The tweet has garnered over 41,000 'likes' and a ton of amused responses, including one from CarryMinati. The YouTuber responded by sharing two laughing-face emojis.

The upcoming season of Bigg Boss will reportedly have a lockdown theme. Television actors like Nia Sharma, Vivian Dsena and Sugandha Mishra have been named as probable contestants on the show.

Midfielder Tji Savanier scored once in each half as Montpellier beat Lyon 2-1 on Tuesday to move up to fifth place in the French league. The match was rescheduled from the first round of games because Lyon reached the Champions League semifinals, losing to eventual champion Bayern Munich.

Savanier opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute and Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar was sent off just before the break. Savanier slotted a shot inside the left post in the 59th to make it 2-0 but Lyon was awarded a way back into the game when 43-year-old Brazilian defender Vitorino Hilton was sent off in the 81st.

Netherlands forward Memphis Depay tucked away the penalty for his league-leading fourth goal amid reports he will soon join Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

"We haven’t received any offer from Barca. Not even a phone call to ask the price for Memphis," Lyon’s sporting director Juninho said. "From what I understand is that if he stays he’ll be happy to help us have a good season."

Lyon, which has four points and sits in 11th place, is in action again on Friday when it hosts Nimes.

On Wednesday, defending champion Paris Saint-Germain seeks to avoid a third straight league defeat when it hosts Metz at Parc des Princes. They are the only two sides in the league not to score a goal so far.

  • Sea launches would reduce that risk

China has successfully sent nine satellites into orbit in its first commercial launch of a rocket from a platform at sea, state media reported on Wednesday.

The satellites, one of which belonged to video-sharing platform Bilibili, were deployed by a Long March 11 rocket from the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, media reported.

The Long March 11, designed to be deployed quickly and from mobile launch sites such as a ship, is mainly used to carry small satellites. The rocket made its first sea launch in June last year.

"Sea launch platforms will increase the number of China's launch areas, improve launch efficiency, and make launches safer and more flexible," the official People's Daily cited Li Zongli, director of the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, as saying.

China has three inland space launch centers, where used rocket stages return to earth and sometimes pose a danger to inhabited areas. Sea launches would reduce that risk.

China has made its space programme a top priority in recent years as it races to catch up with the United States and become a major space power by 2030.

Legal battle between Elton John and ex-wife Renate Blauel could be settled out of court | Daily Mail Online

Elton John and ex-wife Renate Blauel hold 'peace talks' to settle bitter £3m legal battle privately, court documents reveal

  • German Renate Blauel filed a £3million damages claim against Sir Elton John, 73
  • Claims he broke terms of their divorce by mentioning their marriage in public
  • Now the case is set to be handled out of the courts if lawyers can't make a deal

Sir Elton John and his ex-wife Renate Blauel are trying to settle their £3 million legal battle in private, court documents have revealed.

German recording engineer Ms Blauel filed a £3million damages claim against Sir Elton, 73. She alleged he broke the terms of their divorce by mentioning their failed marriage in public.

Now the case - which became increasingly acrimonious as weeks went by - is set to be handled out of the courts if their lawyers can make a deal in time.

If the pair's lawyers don't come to an agreement by 4pm on October 13, the case could hit the open court - and therefore into the public realm - documents seen by The Sun have revealed.

Sir Elton's legal counsel Jenny Afia told MailOnline that they believed the 'true purpose' of Ms Blauel's claim was 'to extract a large sum of money from Elton and tarnish his name publicly with falsehoods'.

But Ms Blauel hit back, with her legal counsel, Yisrael Hiller of Asserson, issuing a fiery statement on her behalf: 'It is sad that Sir Elton appears to now be seeking to belittle and discredit Renate by issuing damaging and baseless slurs about her through his lawyers.

'Our client reiterates that her case has never been about money, nor about tarnishing reputations. It is about Sir Elton’s broken promise and the suffering this caused our client.

'The recent disclosure of very personal details about our client has only come to light because Sir Elton’s team demanded the information.

'Being forced to reveal these very private aspects of her life in a public forum is very painful for our client. Renate remains hopeful that Sir Elton will accept that he has breached their agreement and undertake never to do so again so that Renate can live without fear of further invasion of her privacy.'

Ms Blauel says that her former husband's discussion of their relationship in his book 'Me, Elton John' - as well as scenes in the 'Rocketman' biopic - led to renewed public interest in her.

According to court documents, Ms Blauel claims Sir Elton should have known that she could suffer psychiatric harm, due to previous mental health issues she had suffered.

However Sir Elton, in his defence to her claim, has denied knowing she was susceptible to mental health problems and claims that nothing he has said was in breach of the agreement.

But in fresh court filings at the High Court, Ms Blauel's barrister Adam Wolanski QC says Sir Elton knew of her struggles with 'depression and anxiety' - citing her alleged suicide attempt and an anxiety attack in front of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.

'The defendant knew that the claimant had attempted to commit suicide during their marriage,' says the barrister. 'Approximately five to six months after their wedding, the claimant and the defendant went on their honeymoon to a villa near to St Tropez.

'They were joined on the trip by Bob Halley - the defendant's personal assistant who stayed in the honeymoon property with the couple - and John Reid, who was staying at a nearby villa.

'Three days into the honeymoon, and without any forewarning, the defendant told the claimant that the marriage was not working and that he wanted her to leave the property and return to England.

'The claimant was extremely upset. She immediately left the property to go on a walk and, upon her return, obtained Valium tablets from the luggage of Mr Halley, which she knew that he carried in case any member of the party had trouble sleeping.

'She went into a spare bedroom and wrote a note to the defendant, before taking an overdose of approximately 36 Valium tablets. She quickly lost consciousness and was discovered by Mr Halley.

'He alerted the defendant, who became extremely angry. Mr Halley then drove the Claimant to a hospital in St Tropez where she had her stomach pumped. The defendant did not visit her during her two-day stay in hospital.

'Upon being discharged and, it is to be inferred, on the instructions of the defendant, Mr Halley met the claimant at the hospital with her luggage and drove her straight to the airport where she boarded a flight back to London.

'After approximately one to two weeks, she was permitted to re-join the defendant on the honeymoon.'

Mr Wolanski says that Ms Blauel sought help from a Harley Street psychiatrist and was given medication, but struggled during the marriage with anxiety.

'In or about 1985, the claimant and defendant hosted a lunch for members of the Royal family including the late Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Prince Andrew,' he continues.

'During this visit, Princess Margaret asked the claimant about a painting belonging to the defendant. The claimant was unable to recall any details about the painting and this caused her to panic and become very anxious.

'She interrupted the defendant's conversation with the Queen Mother to ask for assistance before removing herself to another room.

'Although she did not explain to the defendant why she had done this, it must have been obvious to him that she had absented herself because of her anxiety.'

Sir Elton and German-born Ms Blauel had met in 1983 while the star was finishing his Too Low for Zero album, which included the hit singles 'I'm Still Standing' and 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues'.

They were married at a star-studded ceremony in Sydney, Australia, in February 1984, but divorced four years later, after which Ms Blauel tried to distance herself from her life with Sir Elton, she says.

She bought a new home in a friend's name, hid her identity from removal men and told most people she knew she was leaving the country, when she was in fact staying in the UK and changing her identity.

In earlier court papers, Mr Wolanski claimed that - following the release of the 'Rocketman' movie - Ms Blauel had found herself back in the public eye due to renewed interest in her.

Numerous articles were written, with titles like 'Who Is Renate Blauel, Elton John's Former Wife?', while an unidentified journalist had managed to track her to her local village, he claimed.

'She has, since the release of the film, suffered recurring nightmares, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, fear, and has had to relive her past constantly,' he said.

But in defence papers, Sir Elton's barrister Colin West QC says the singer denies breaching the terms of the divorce agreement or knowing she was susceptible to mental health issues.

She had not complained when he spoke about their marriage in the past and correspondence between them since their divorce had previously been 'warm and friendly.'

The clause in the divorce agreement could only have been intended to prevent discussion of confidential matters, not common knowledge like Sir Elton's sexuality, said the barrister.

'Given the fact that the defendant is gay has entered the public domain without any breach of the agreement, the reasons for separation have to that extent also entered the public domain without any breach of the agreement and have thereby lost any confidential character they might otherwise have had,' he says.

'Given the fact that the defendant is gay has entered the public domain without any breach of the agreement, the reasons for separation have to that extent also entered the public domain without any breach of the agreement and have thereby lost any confidential character they might otherwise have had,' he says.

'None of the disclosures about which the claimant complains concern matters which are in fact - or are any longer - private and confidential.'

He added: 'The defendant has at all times acted with due and proper regard for his former wife's feelings, as well as his contractual obligations towards her, notwithstanding the fact that they were divorced over 30 years ago.

In a statement issued separate to court proceedings, Sir Elton's legal counsel Jenny Afia told MailOnline: 'Elton has always respected Renate's privacy and will continue to do so.

'It is well documented that their marriage was completely respectful and the relationship both Elton and Renate had after they divorced continued to be kind, respectful and honourable for the 30 years following.

'It will be established in the case that there were multiple affectionate correspondences from Renate direct to Elton during this time.

'We also find it baffling that this claim is centred around privacy when at every stage of these proceedings Renate has chosen to file these claims in the public domain (when she could have chosen to keep them confidential) about supposed experiences that happened during their marriage which completely goes against the entire grounds of the case.

'This only goes to show the true purpose of this claim which is to extract a large sum of money from Elton and tarnish his name publicly with falsehoods.'

Coronavirus News: First Phase Of Census 2021 Postponed Due To Covid Pandemic

First Phase Of Census 2021 Postponed Due To Covid Pandemic

With the outbreak of COVID-19 and strict instructions to follow social distancing and other hygiene protocols, concerns had been raised over health risks to all involved

First Phase Of Census 2021 Postponed Due To Covid Pandemic

First phase of the Census was to have been conducted from April 1 to September 30 (Representational)

    New Delhi:

The first phase of Census 2021 - which had been scheduled from April 1 to September 30 this year - has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Home Ministry informed the Parliament Wednesday.

In response to a question by Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, the government said the initial phase of census operations, which would have included related field activities such as the exercise to update the contentious NPR (National Population Register) has been deferred.

A final decision on when these activities will take place has not yet been made. It is unlikely, however, that these will be held this year.

One of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world, the census in India is conducted once a decade and normally involves around 30 lakh officials visiting every household across the length and breadth of the country.

However, with the outbreak of COVID-19 and strict instructions to follow social distancing and other hygiene protocols, concerns had been raised over health risks to all involved.

"As the entire exercise needs the involvement of lakhs of officials and visit to each family, we can't underestimate the health risks involved," a senior government official told news agency PTI late last month. "The census is not an essential exercise for now. Even if it is delayed by a year, there would be no harm," the official added.

India has recorded more than 50 lakh Covid cases since the outbreak began in December last year; over 90,000 were recorded in the past 24 hours.

In March, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered a nationwide lockdown to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India were set for the first phase to begin from April 1.

However, shortly after the lockdown came into force government officials told PTI that the operations would be deferred till further notice. The operations included updating the NPR - something several opposition parties have vehemently opposed.

According to the government the NPR - last carried out in 2010 (also as part of the census) - will help create a comprehensive identity database of every "usual resident" of the country and improve delivery of benefits from the government's various welfare schemes.

However, many saw the NPR as the problematic first step towards a proposed NRC (National Register of Citizens) that the government claims will weed out illegal immigrants, but critics fear could be used to target minorities.

Several state governments, including Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, have requested the centre not to carry out the NPR over concerns about the kind of data being collected.

The Hut Group Shares Soar 30% After Bumper $7 Billion London IPO

The Hut Group's shares soared more than 30% in the company's first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering in seven years.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 1:30 PM IST

LONDON: The Hut Group’s shares soared more than 30% in the company’s first day of trading on Wednesday after batting away corporate governance concerns to seal the first major British initial public offering in seven years.

The company, which helps sell retail brands, including Lookfantastic and skincare group ESPA, sold 376 million shares at 500 pence each to raise 1.88 billion pounds in a float that valued the firm at 5.4 billion pounds ($6.96 billion).

The biggest London stock market debut since Royal Mail Plc in 2013 nets the company 920 million pounds while shareholders, led by founder Matthew Moulding, will share gross proceeds of 961 million pounds.

The shares were trading at 654 pence at 0732 GMT.

While The Hut Group’s market debut gave a boost to what has been a terrible 2020 for new listings, with the COVID-19 pandemic driving European IPO volumes down to their lowest level in eight years, some investors have raised concerns over the structure of the deal.

For example, Moulding will remain both chairman and chief executive of the company, while the shares are to be issued in different “classes”, allowing him voting powers vastly superior to most other London-listed companies.

These structural features mean that The Hut Group will not be granted a so-called premium listing and will not be eligible for the FTSE 100 despite being big enough for the blue-chip index.

The London Stock Exchange declined to comment.

One source close to the deal said the LSE standard listing required high levels of governance and was equivalent to other European exchanges.

BlackRock, Henderson Global Investors, funds managed by Merian and the Qatar Investment Authority agreed to buy 565 million pounds of the shares offered.

“There wasn’t too much concern about this during the bookbuild – investors understand that the founder is a key part of the story,” said a second source familiar with the transaction.

This source said that the strong IPO environment meant other companies could take heart from THG’s success and also launch deals.

“We expect it to be a busy fourth quarter,” he added.JP Morgan, Citi, Barclays and Goldman Sachs were global coordinators. HSBC, Jefferies and Numis acted as joint bookrunners.

Biden assembles legal team ahead of divisive 2020 election

Democrat Joe Biden is assembling a team of top lawyers in anticipation of court challenges to the election process that could ultimately determine who wins the race for the White House.
Biden's presidential campaign says the legal war room will work to ensure that elections are properly administered and votes correctly counted. It will also seek to combat voter suppression at the polls, identify foreign interference and misinformation, and educate voters on the different methods available for casting ballots.

The effort, which the Biden campaign described as the largest election protection program in presidential campaign history, reflects the extent of the preparation underway for an already divisive presidential contest in November that could produce significant, perhaps even decisive, court cases over voter access and the legitimacy of mail ballots.

Democrats and Republicans are locked in legal fights on election rules that could help shape the outcome of the vote, and President Donald Trump's campaign has its own attorneys handling cases on a variety of issues.

Trump in recent months has sought to preemptively cast doubt on the election, warning that the expected surge in mail ballots because of the coronavirus pandemic will lead to massive fraud and could open the door to foreign countries to print their own fraudulent ballots.

Notwithstanding Donald Trump and his Republican allies' hollow threats and constant misinformation, election officials around the country are working tirelessly to hold a free and fair and election, and we have an extraordinary national team in place to ensure that every eligible voter is able to exercise their right to vote and have their vote counted," Bob Bauer, a senior adviser to the Biden campaign and former White House counsel to President Barack Obama, said in a statement.

Bauer, who served as general counsel to the Obama campaigns of 2008 and 2012, will work with campaign general counsel Dana Remus on voter protection an issue that thousands of Democratic lawyers around the country are also engaged in, according to the Biden campaign.

The campaign is also creating a special national litigation team involving hundreds of lawyers that will include as leaders Walter Dellinger, a solicitor general in the Clinton administration, and Donald Verrilli, a solicitor general under Obama.

Democratic lawyer Marc Elias and a team of lawyers from his firm, Perkins Coie, will focus on protecting voter access and ensuring a fair and accurate vote count.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder will also play an outreach role on the question of voting rights, according to the campaign.

We can and will be able to hold a free and fair election this November and we're putting in place an unprecedented voter protection effort with thousands of lawyers and volunteers around the country to ensure that voting goes smoothly, Remus said in a statement.

The Trump campaign issued a statement from deputy manager Justin Clark saying that as "Democrats continue their push to weaken reasonable rules preventing fraud like voter ID and signature matching President Trump and his campaign will continue to protect the integrity of the vote.

Our team will continue to fight every day in the courtroom and on the ground to make sure that every eligible voter has the right to vote and that their vote is counted once, Clark said.

    Amazon Echo Flex detailed review

With Amazon launching a new Echo device almost every other month these days, it’s evident the popular American multinational wants to rule the roost in the Indian smart speaker and—more recently—small display markets. The company’s portfolio recently saw the addition of some very unique models, like the Echo Input Portable Edition (Amazon’s first battery-powered Echo device in India) and the Echo Auto (an Echo device designed to be operated in the car). The Echo Flex is also one such device.

Amazon’s aim is to make its popular digital assistant Alexa as easily accessible to the user as possible, even if that means cramming her into a tiny ring or a pair of glasses. This aim reflects unmistakably in the new Echo Flex. On the product page it’s billed as a plug-in Echo device that’s meant for smart home control. In fact, Amazon clarifies on its product page that the Echo Flex is not designed for music playback, only voice commands. What the company doesn’t mention is that it is also the cheapest Echo device you can get today in India. It costs Rs 2,999 on Amazon.in but it's selling for Rs 2,499 at the time of writing this review. With that, let’s check out the new Echo Flex.

    Design and Build

As you can probably tell, the Amazon Echo Flex sports a unique form factor, which can’t quite be compared with that of its brethren. In fact, the portable little device can more easily be mistaken for a mosquito repellent machine or a Wi-Fi range extender. The Echo Flex is unmistakably wall-mountable, which is both good and bad. It’s good because it doesn’t clutter your home with one more power cable and adaptor. It’s bad because it forces you to use it directly from an easy-to-reach wall socket; a power strip that’s tucked away, say, under your bed or table won’t do much good.

When placed conveniently in the kitchen or bedroom, the Echo Flex can prove to be an attractive little piece of tech. In its compact rectangular white plastic shell, the device packs a tiny 0.6-inch speaker, a two-microphone array, the Action and Microphone Off buttons, a small LED light bar for status indications, a 3.5mm jack for audio output, and a USB-A port for charging other devices. While the short pill-shaped light bar doesn’t fail to show the device’s status, it’s not as effective or attractive as the multi-colour light ring on the mainstream Echo series. The Echo Flex also misses physical buttons for volume control, forcing you to use your voice every single time.

    Setup

Setting the Amazon Echo Flex up is no easier or harder than setting up any other Echo device without a display. The setup process, which usually takes up to twenty minutes to complete, begins with the installation of the Amazon Alexa smartphone app. The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms for free, and it guides you through the setup process. For reasons unknown, the review unit talked me through the setup process in Indian English but automatically switched to British English afterwards. Along with it changed the location and timezone. This switch happened even though my default account language was set to Indian English and reflected in all other Echo devices. I guess I’ll chalk that up to a bug in the system.

    Features

Like most other devices in the Echo family, the Echo Flex features a 3.5mm jack for audio output on the right side of its body. I’m happy to see the inclusion of this jack on a device as basic as the Echo Flex. By contrast, none of Google’s smart speakers or displays in India come with a 3.5mm jack for audio output. This feature will certainly liberate audio enthusiasts because they’ll be able to hook the Echo Flex up to their favourite set of speakers while retaining the power of Amazon Alexa.

Surprisingly, the Echo Flex even packs a USB-A port on the bottom side of its body for charging low-power devices. Now, this is something we don’t see on other Echo devices—not even on the most expensive Echo Studio, in fact. The USB port on the Echo Flex can deliver up to 7.5 watts, which is comfortable for charging wireless headsets and fitness bands, but not for fast-charging your smartphone. Nonetheless, it’s a nifty feature that won’t go amiss on other Echo speakers as well. Our review unit managed to charge a pair of Mi Sports Bluetooth Earphones in about two hours.

    User Interface

Like every other Echo device in Amazon’s stable, the Echo Flex is powered by the Amazon Alexa voice-based digital assistant on the inside. Alexa lets you give her commands such as, ‘How’s the weather?’, ‘Tell me a story’, ‘Book a taxi on Uber’, ‘Play songs by The Beatles’, and ‘Turn off the bedroom light’. It’s important to note that some of these commands will only work when a certain ‘skill’ is enabled in the Amazon Alexa app. These skills basically enable Alexa to use your personal accounts for data access, such as Uber and Domino’s Pizza. When compared with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa comes with a few unique features, such as whisper mode (for when you don’t want to wake your parents or spouse) and a custom wake word setting (for when you’re bored of calling her Alexa). In my experience, Amazon Alexa is a friendlier digital assistant than Google Assistant.

    Audio Quality and Voice Response

The Echo Flex comes with a single tiny 0.6-inch mini-speaker that’s best reserved for alarms, reminders, and voice responses from Alexa. Its output is at best flat and weak for all genres of music. By contrast, the Echo Dot has a larger 1.6-inch speaker driver, which is decent for casual music listening. In fact, Amazon writes candidly on the product page of its wall-mountable speaker, “Echo Flex has a mini built-in speaker that is not optimized for music playback.” Luckily, there’s a 3.5mm jack jack for output to external speakers. You should definitely connect the Echo Flex to a pair of good speakers if you seek good audio quality. You can read our review of the Echo Dot with Clock here.

The Echo Flex uses a two-microphone array to pick up ‘Alexa’ calls from its users. The third-generation Echo, by contrast, employs a seven-microphone array for improved reach and sensitivity. The microphone setup on the Echo Flex isn’t bad, but it isn’t great either. The review unit responded to ‘Alexa’ calls as expected when I sat about two metres away from the device and spoke with moderate softness. But the device failed to pick up my calls when I moved even a little farther away from where I was before. In other words, the Echo Flex should be able to hear you if it's kept fairly close to you in the bedroom or kitchen. But if it's plugged into a socket that's across the room, you'll have to draw a breath and shout out to Alexa.

    Bottom Line

As I mentioned in the Design and Build section of the review, the fact that the Amazon Echo Flex is a cable-free wall-mountable smart speaker is both an advantage and disadvantage. Which one of them it is to you depends on how you plan to use the Echo Flex. For it to make sense, the device must be plugged into a wall socket in an area of your home or office where you spend a lot of time. It must also be within close reach. Otherwise, you might catch yourself calling Alexa over and over again in an increasingly louder tone. In other words, the Echo Flex is strictly a near-field device.

Even when it’s conveniently placed, the Amazon Echo Flex is not without its limitations. It’s got a weak speaker that’s only good for voice responses, making it disappointing for music playback—unless you’ve got a set of better external speakers to connect it to. It wins a few brownie points by offering a USB-A port for charging other devices. In summary, the Echo Flex is for you if you’re aware of its physical limitations and want a cheap Echo device for bedside companionship anyway. Its biggest selling point is its friendly price of Rs 2,999.

    Verdict

Priced competitively at Rs 3,999, the Realme Buds Air competes with budget true wireless offerings such as the Leaf Pods and the Noise Shots X-Buds. The Buds Air has most of the features its direct competitors possess such as voice assistant access, touch controls, Bluetooth 5.0 and additional codecs support, barring sweat resistance. It also goes over and beyond by featuring high-end features including wear detection, auto-connect, auto on/off and a dedicated low latency gaming mode, making it an alluring purchase. Beyond the bells and whistles, the Realme Buds Air also has a pleasing warm sound profile which works well with most popular genres of music. The battery life is commendable as well, especially since the charging case comes in a nice, compact form factor. Overall, the Buds Air proves to be an applause-worthy venture by Realme into the world of affordable true wireless earbuds.

    Realme Buds Air detailed review

With the launch of the Realme Buds Air, the company has forayed into the true wireless earphones segment following their Realme Buds and Realme Buds wireless earphones. The company is in the nascent phase when it comes to audio products, but has been producing competent audio solutions at an affordable price point. The Buds Air is available at a super aggressive price while still offering high-end features present in truly wireless earbuds that cost nearly four or five times more. Let’s delve into the review to ascertain if the hype around the Realme Buds Air is justified.

    Design, build and fit

The very first thought that springs to mind when you lay eyes on the Realme Buds Air is - Apple AirPods clone? Featuring an inordinately similar pipe-style design along with 45-degree angled earphone nozzles, the Realme Buds Air (the white variant) can easily be mistaken for the much pricier Apple AirPods. This is certainly a marketing strategy employed by Realme to allure customers into buying these TWS earphones since the AirPods are immensely popular. We were rather disappointed by the lack of originality demonstrated by these buds. Even the glossy, plastic exterior of the Realme Buds Air is almost identical to the AirPod's, however, the microphone grille is much smaller in comparison.

Let’s take a step back and talk about the charging case. The Buds Air are confined in a glossy, plastic charging case (our review unit was the black-coloured variant) that seems a tad more compact than the AirPods case, just by a hair. The small factor is appreciated, especially since the battery unit within the case is capable of topping up the earphones 4-5 times. On the backside, ‘Designed by realme’ is embossed into the case, which fails to stand out against the shiny background. The bottom of the case features a USB-C charging port, which is a rarity in affordable true wireless earphones. Additionally, the front of the case also hosts a solitary button that serves as a pairing key. The button sits almost flush with the body, with minute protrusion. The case opens up easily with minimal pressure and snaps back using magnets with a satisfying click.

The cavity for the earphones within the charging case has a glossy texture as well. But the platform enclosure sports a matte material which provides for some decent contrast within the case. The earphones fit inside the cavity snuggly with magnets at the bottom attracting the bottom of the earphones’ stem, thereby making them sit in the case securely. The case is easily pocketable and the bulge in the pocket is fairly minimal. In the box, you also get a USB Type-C charging cord, which for some reason is white even though we received the black variant. Speaking of colours, the Realme Buds Air are available in three colour variants - Black, White and Yellow.

The earphones have 45-degree earphone nozzles, as aforementioned, to aid in obtaining a snug and secure fit. However, they follow the design of the AirPods and do not have silicone or foam ear tips. Unfortunately, this bothered us a fair bit since the reviewer’s ears are smaller than usual. The earphones had to be shoved in roughly and twisted furiously in order to stay put in the reviewer’s tiny ears, which caused some discomfort in the ear canal. While we did manage to get them to stay in, the Buds Air’s fit still felt flimsy and loose, especially when walking or with some vigorous head movement while sitting in one place. However, if you have normal-sized ears, the earphones should fit you no problem. Still, this design often causes issues when it comes to passive isolation even when they fit in just fine. Needless to say, the Realme Buds Air aren’t extremely secure in the ear when running or going to the gym.

    Features

The headlining feature that comes along with the Realme Buds Air is Qi wireless charging capabilities. The charging case can be placed atop any Qi-standard wireless charger and it will begin charging right up. It’s an impressive, eye-catching feature to incorporate in true wireless earbuds that cost under 5K. Wireless charging works seamlessly. We placed it on the Corsair MM1000 Qi Wireless Charging Mousepad on the charging hotspot and it got to work without any hitches. The charging case was completely topped up within approximately three hours, which isn’t too shabby. Realme didn’t stop here when it comes to luxurious features.

The Realme Buds Air is also capable of instantaneous connection to a paired device the moment the earphones are extracted out of the charging case. The initial pairing process involves pressing the button on the charging case for 3 seconds and connecting the earphones to your device via Bluetooth. After this process, the buds will automatically find and connect to the already-paired device within a second, if not milliseconds. This is achieved via GFP (Google Fast Pair) technology and the results are quite remarkable. We’d be even more blown away if the earphones automatically began playing music from the device after connecting, but hey, we’re being extremely nitpicky for a product that cost Rs 3,999.

In addition to wireless charging and fast auto-connection, the Realme Buds Air also comes with Wear Detection. Optical sensors are employed to gather whether the earphones are placed within the ear or they have been extracted. It also works when a single earbud is removed, which makes it easy for users to have quick conversations by simply pulling out one bud. However, this feature does seem to be rough around the edges. Firstly, extracting an earbud from your ear doesn’t immediately pause the music. It’s not very seamless since it takes about 2-3 seconds to pause after the buds have been pulled out. However, music plays almost immediately after you insert the earphones back in your ear, possibly since it is much easier for an optical sensor to gauge what looks like the insides of an ear. Lastly, the feature worked about eighty per cent of the times for us and failed to register a couple of times.

Realme also went ahead and incorporated a dedicated low latency gaming mode that also kicks in during video playback. Realme quoted a latency reduction of 51 per cent in their tests with the normal latency measuring at 243.8 ms while latency with gaming mode turned on was 119.3 ms. This resulted in gaming and video feedback that was extremely in sync with the outputted audio. Gaming was a joy with these with enemy footsteps sound in PUBG mobile being in sync with the footsteps appearing on the minimap and the sound of shots being produce in tangence with the muzzle flash. We couldn’t make out any noticeable delay of audio while watching any video feed or playing mobile games when in gaming mode. When we switched back to normal or ‘music’ mode, a slight delay was perceivable but it wasn’t too disjointed as well.

The Buds Air also comes packed with additional features such as dual-channel transmission which makes each earbud operate independently, Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, bass booster driver, ENC (environmental noise cancellation) for calls, USB Type-C charging, touch controls, and voice assistant access. That’s a hefty number of features for a pair of true wireless earphones that cost 4K and Realme has truly provided a feature-laden pair of earphones that will give their competitors a run for their money when it comes to features.

    Controls

The Realme Buds Air have integrated touch controls accessible by performing taps on the backside of the earbuds, over the curved body. A flat body at the back would be ideal to accurately input touch actions. Due to the curvature on the touch panel, it is easier to miss-tap on the surface, and therefore there were quite a few instances when the touch inputs failed to register accurately or at all. However, such issues occurred sparingly and weren’t a huge issue.

The touch controls are pretty straightforward on the Buds Air. You double-tap the surface to pause or play a track and to answer phone calls and a triple tap will take you to the next track. Long pressing either earbud will activate Google Assistant or Siri and will end or decline a phone call. Simultaneously long-pressing both earphones will activate or deactivate the dedicated gaming mode.

A few touch inputs are sorely missing on these earphones. There’s no provision to go to the previous track, which is something we can still live without. However, there’s no way to control the volume and this means you’re going to have to pull out your smartphone every time you want to alter the volume, which is something we do a lot, so it got frustrating pretty quickly. This feature could be easily incorporated too, by simply allowing long presses to the right and left side to increase and decrease the volume level respectively, while a single tap could activate the voice assistant.

    Performance

Powered by an R1 chip for low latency, which is Realme’s answer to Apple’s H1 chip in the AirPods, the Realme Buds Air feature 12mm dynamic bass boost drivers and a multi-layer composite diaphragm to produce the warm sound profile that works well across numerous music genres. The result is a pleasing sound signature that is dominated by its bass drive producing punchy beats. However, this energetic bass response is surprisingly controlled and instances, where the bass response sounds muddled and gurgly are extremely low.

In the track Bad guy by Billie Eilish, the bass thumps are audible and have tons of drive, however, the integrity of Eilish’s wispy vocals is largely retained. The sounds of her occasional breaths are clear and audible and so is the snapping of the fingers in the background. When it came to Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust, the bass thumps captured the detail in the bass guitar playing throughout the track in the background quite well. Despite this, Mercury’s vocals soared and were very much front and centre in the track.

The mids are slightly under-represented in the Buds Air and while vocals sound good, and almost pristine in some tracks, the mid-ranged instruments such as the lead guitar can sound a bit rough around the edges. The details in this range are acceptable, however, you often miss the intricacies in instruments that lie in the upper mids frequency range. A track crowded with multiple instruments in this frequency range can sound cacophonic at times, especially in tracks such as Something From Nothing by The Foo Fighters

The highs are represented decently, however, they are significantly under emphasised. This can actually help in some screechy tracks such as Serotonia by Highly Suspect and Faint by Linkin Park since it tones down the intensity of the high-pitched notes in these tracks which can be uncomfortable, especially when played by in-ears. These are truly mass-appealing earphones in that regard, that bring out the pleasant frequencies and notes in music while slightly veiling the harsh ones. It’s easy to recommend these buds to casual listeners looking for affordable true wireless options, however, we’d urge you to get these even more if the mids were more refined.

The soundstage, as expected from in-ears, is quite limited, however, imaging is quite decent since it places instruments quite soundly in most tracks. Still, it cannot keep up with tracks that feature more than 4-5 instruments. Due to the design and eliminating silicone tips, passive isolation is quite weak. We could easily hear background sounds in the office, our mechanical keyboards at work and other such sounds. If you are used to keeping the volume anywhere between 50-60 per cent, you’re listening experience will be tainted a bit with background sounds seeping in. The earphones also leak a fair bit, we recorded the leakage to be around 55-60dB in a quiet room, depending on how much you turn the volume up by.

Call quality and microphone performance are average. The earbuds do feature ENC to filter out environmental sounds from being present in recordings or calls but the mic itself couldn’t capture our voice clearly. The listener on the other end often complained of our voice being too muffled or far away. The clarity of our voice in recordings was also lacklustre with Google Translate being unable to pick up quite a few words from the recordings.

Battery life, on the other hand, is quite competent. While it features a measly company claim of 3 hours on the buds themselves, we manage to extract about 3 hours and 20 minutes from the buds alone. The charging case is capable of topping these earphones 4-5 times. We were able to charge the earphones back up 4 times to full, which is commendable. The total battery life of 17 hours is not too shabby at all. Also, we listened to music at about 60-65 per cent. So, if you generally listen to music at lower volumes, you will be able to extract more battery life from the earbuds

    Bottomline

Featuring a mass-appealing boosted bass sound profile, the Realme Buds Air still manages to avoid issues such as auditory masking which is common in bass-heavy earphones. The bass is controlled but punchy, the mids are slightly lacking in detail but the highs are quite pleasant to the ear. In addition to this relatively balanced sound profile, you also get access to numerous luxurious features such as wear detection, low latency gaming mode, instant connectivity, auto on/off, touch controls and most importantly, wireless charging. This means you can charge your earphones case on any Qi wireless charger as well as the backs of phones that offer wireless charging such as the Samsung Galaxy S10! At a highly competitive price point of Rs 3,999, the Realme Buds Air is an ideal purchase for casual listeners looking for a reasonably-priced pair of true wireless earphones.

‘Mask is mandatory!’ Venkaiah Naidu interrupts SP’s Ram Gopal Yadav for removing mask during Rajya Sabha address

    By: |
    Updated: Sep 16, 2020 2:21 PM

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is currently underway with strict Covid-19 protocol in place for MPs.

Rajya Sabha: Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav seeks permission to remove his face mask while speaking.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu wants MPs to strictly adhere to the Covid-19 rules to minimise the threat of spreading the virus that has hit millions across India. Naidu, also the Vice President of India, on Wednesday told MPs that wearing a mask is mandatory even when they speak on the floor of the House.

Naidu’s comment came after Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav sought permission to remove his face mask while speaking. Yadav said that it caused “suffocation”.

To this, Naidu replied, “Wearing a mask and speaking, and wearing a mask and continuously sitting, there is some discomfiture… I personally spoke to Director General of the ICMR, he told me it is better to keep the mask on since this hall is air conditioned… Their initial suggestion was to wear a mask while talking to a person. Now, the advice is to always wear a mask. It may change later.”

Earlier, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan had removed her mask before her address in the Rajya Sabha. Naidu had then reminded her as well to wear it. But Jaya said that she will not be audible to the colleagues, adding that she will clean the microphone. The Chairman then gave her permission to carry on with her speech.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is currently underway with strict Covid-19 protocol in place for MPs. Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are functioning in two different shifts. While Rajya Sabha is sitting in the morning shift (9am to 1pm), the Lok Sabha is working in the evening shift (3pm to 7pm). The Houses are functioning without any break and the premises are santised in the intervening period of the meeting of both houses. The Monsoon Session will culminate on October 1.

Meanwhile, India’s COVID-19 tally of cases galloped past 50 lakh, just 11 days after it crossed 40 lakh with 90,123 cases being reported in a day. The recoveries surged to 39,42,360 on Wednesday pushing the recovery rate to 78.53%, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The total coronavirus cases mounted to 50,20,359, while the death toll climbed to 82,066 with a record 1,290 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle donate $130,000 to African girls' education charity after fans launched fundraiser in honor of both their birthdays

    • Prince Harry celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday privately in Santa Barbara

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a $130,000 donation to an African girls' education charity to mark their recent birthdays, it has been revealed.

Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, pledged the money to CAMFED, which supports girls' education across the continent, and said there is 'no better way to celebrate what really matters'.

The couple made the donation yesterday after fans, who call themselves the Sussex Squad, launched a fundraising drive in honour of Harry and Meghan's birthdays on September 15 and August 4, respectively.

The campaign raised $129,000 and Harry and Meghan responded by matching the donations with their own $130,000 contribution.

Charitable donations are tax deductible in both the US and the UK. CAMFED is registered in both countries.

The couple have a long-standing relationship with CAMFED, which is a partner of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. Harry and Meghan serve as president and vice president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust and were allowed to retain their positions after stepping back from official royal duties this year.

Prince Harry visited a CAMFED project in Zambia in 2018 and paid a separate visit to the organisation during his solo visit to Malawi on the Sussexes' African tour in 2019.

The Duchess of Sussex met one of the regional leaders of CAMFED at a Women's Day event in London in 2019.

The money raised from the Sussex Squad Birthday Fundraiser 2020 will fund higher education scholarships for young women across Africa.

In a statement tweeted by the charity, the Sussexes said: 'No better way to celebrate what really matters. Thank you to everyone who donated, Harry and Meghan'.

The couple, who recently signed a $150million deal with Netflix, supported two charities to mark their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor's birthday in May.

Meghan and Archie appeared in a video to promote a Save The Children literacy programme and the Duchess later revealed she had sponsored a kennel at London-based animal charity Mayhew, of which she is patron, in her son's name.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated Harry's birthday privately yesterday at their $14million Santa Barbara home.

The royal family marked the occasion by sharing well-wishes on Instagram and Twitter, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and the Queen all posting in honour of Harry's birthday.

However royal fans were outraged that Meghan did not appear in any of the four photographs posted to mark the occasion.

In response to William and Kate's photo, which shows the Cambridges and Prince Harry in a 2017 running race, one fan noted: 'There must have been hundreds of photos you could have picked, but you chose to post one of Harry, William and Kate. I’m sure not including Meghan wasn’t unintentional.'

Another fan posting on the Cambridges' account said it was 'shady' not to include the Duchess of Sussex when there are photos of the 'fab four' together. Another said simply: 'Interesting photo selection... No Meghan.'

However some pointed out that it is common for royal family members not to include husbands and wives in birthday photos, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did for Princess Anne's recent 70th.

It comes after the strain in relations between Prince William, 38, and Harry, who were once inseparable, were laid bare in the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes' biography Finding Freedom.

Co-author Omid Scobie later claimed the brothers went two months without speaking following the Sussexes' bombshell Megxit announcement.

The Duke of Sussex certainly has plenty to celebrate this year - his first birthday since he and Meghan quit the royal family and moved to California.

The couple recently signed a $150million deal with US media giant Netflix and paid back the £2.4million that was spent renovating Frogmore Cottage, their former home on the Queen's Windsor estate, further distancing themselves from the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also recently stepped up their public and virtual appearances as Covid-19 restrictions ease, with Prince Harry last week sending a video of support to soldiers taking part in a charity trek. Over the weekend Meghan took part in a video call with clients from her UK patronage Smart Works.

And according to royal experts, the Duke is 'happier than ever' as he celebrates his 36th birthday, and 'doesn't miss his old life at all'.

Omid Scobie, who co-authored the controversial royal biography Finding Freedom which raised eyebrows for its gushing praise and intimate knowledge of the Sussexes, the Prince is 'very content' with his marriage and family and 'thriving' in his professional life.

He told Vanity Fair: 'This is the moment [Harry] can sit back and think, "I made it".'

AstraZeneca has resumed British clinical trials of the vaccine, one of the most advanced in development for COVID-19, after they were paused earlier this month following a serious side effect in a trial participant.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:26 PM IST

Serum Institute of India has received Indian regulatory approval to resume local clinical trials of AstraZeneca’s potential COVID-19 vaccine, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The approval came from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), according to the source.

AstraZeneca has resumed British clinical trials of the vaccine, one of the most advanced in development for COVID-19, after they were paused earlier this month following a serious side effect in a trial participant.

Trials have also resumed in Brazil and South Africa, but remain on hold in the United States.

Indian regulators had allowed Serum’s trials of the AstraZeneca vaccine to resume under certain conditions, including increased safety monitoring and informing volunteers about new findings, a DCGI source said.

“We allowed them (to resume trials) after a detailed discussion with authorities in the UK and the company itself,” the source added.

Serum, the world’s biggest vaccine manufacturer, did not respond to Reuters requests for comment, while DCGI representatives did not respond to emails seeking comment.

    Minister clarifies on Toyotas signal to stop expansion in India -

One Of Largest Known T. Rex Skeletons Up For Auction At Christie’s

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

    • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:42 PM IST

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

The dinosaur known as “STAN,”, approximately 67 million years old, was discovered in 1987 in South Dakota by amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison.

“He showed it to scientists at the time who unfortunately misidentified it as a triceratops,” James Hyslop, Christie’s head of Science and Natural History, told Reuters.

Triceratops remains are relatively common in the paleontological world, so the bones failed to garner much interest until Sacrison took them to the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota in 1992.

Researchers there “realized pretty quickly that they had something special in their hands,” said Hyslop. They recategorized STAN as a T. rex and mounted a new search to uncover the rest of the bones. They recovered 188 out of an estimated 300 total for any T. rex, Hyslop said.

Most T. rex skeletons are held by museums and private institutions. The auction is an opportunity for a private collector or institution to acquire the bones, Christie’s said.

STAN is 40 feet long and 13 feet high, Christie’s said. He is also notable for two fused vertebrae scientists have identified in his neck, suggesting the dinosaur broke his neck and survived during his lifetime. “The clue is in the name, the Tyrannosaurus rex,” Hyslop said. “He is the tyrant lizard king.”

Christie’s will display the dinosaur from Wednesday to mid-October at its Manhattan, New York location, the company said. It plans to book socially distant viewings for the public.

“We’ve got the skull displayed at ground level so that you can get really up close and personal with him and just see the serrations on his teeth,” Hyslop said. “His longest tooth is 11 inches long. It’s just terrifying to behold.”

Christie’s has estimated the value of the dinosaur at between $6 million and $8 million.

    Verdict

The RX 590 is an interesting graphics card. It's better than the stock GTX 1060 but might probably be bested by an overclocked GTX 1060. However, getting the same chip out for three years in a row seems a stretch. AMD was clearly affected by Raja Koduri's exit but such technologies are developed well in advance. It wouldn't be wrong to assume that AMD does have something better for the mid-range segment especially given that the next generation of consoles are due to be launched in 2020 (most likely) and developer consoles have already gone out to major studios with specs akin to the final configuration. The Radeon VII should clue us into what the next generation is capable of, though it might be some time before we see a new architecture. For folks wondering if they should get an RX 590 for mid-range gaming, you most certainly should considering the fact that the included bundle makes this one of the sweetest deals you’ll get for a while. It’s a good mid-range graphics card but you couldn’t go wrong with a GTX 1060 or an RX 580 since all three cards are good at 1080p gaming. What you need to wonder is if you’d want three free games or not.

SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 8GB detailed review

AMD showcased a different strategy when it came out the Polaris range of graphics cards. The focus was now on the mid-range and entry-level cards first and the flagships would follow later. Roughly two-and-a-half years later, we’re looking at the same Polaris cards even today. Polaris itself was a marked improvement over the previous generation of Radeon graphics cards and the roadmaps certainly showcased an upward trend but we’re yet to see a worthy successor to the Polaris lineup. The recently announced Radeon VII seems like it would be turning things around. Hopefully, we’ll know in a few weeks.

Coming back to the Radeon RX 590, it is another revision of the RX 480. The RX 480 was followed by the RX 580 which had the same GPU configuration but sported slight improvements that allowed it to scale to slightly higher frequencies. However, the board power requirement also went up to 185 watts from 150 watts that the RX 480 was designed for. So one can’t really tell if the process improvements helped much given the increase in power consumption. Now that we have the RX 590 which is a slightly improved version of the RX 580, let’s see how it fares in the current environment.

    AMD Radeon RX 590 Specifications

The three columns are practically the same since the GPU architecture has been the same. The clock speeds have improved a lot and the typical board power values have also risen to match the clock speeds.

The other key element that stands out is the move to a smaller process node. This has been at the centre of much debate with folks claiming that the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 12nm process node is simply an interpretation of Samsung’s 14nm process node. So it is actually 12nm? Well, none of the transistor sizes are actually what they seem to be. The actual values of the different components of the transistor are much larger than 12 or 14nm. Fabs simply call it 12nm or 14nm to keep things simple. The differences between two manufacturing processes are vast and what we get to read are simply marketing monikers to keep things simple. The fact here is that the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 12nm is an improvement over the 14nm process node and that’s why the RX 590 can clock higher. It definitely will consume more power which is why the TBP for the RX 590 is now 225 Watts while the GloFo 14nm based RX 580 was at 185 Watts. Simply bumping up the power to the board wouldn’t have allowed the average user to achieve these clocks.

    Performance

Our test rig has been upgraded to keep up with the times and the new Windows releases. This means all our legacy scores are not comparable, specially given the fact that CPU performance has gone up by a significant margin. Here’s what we’re running at the moment.

    Processor - Intel Core i9 9900K
CPU Cooler - Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM
Motherboard - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO
    RAM - 2x 8 GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3200 MHz
    SSD - Corsair MP510
    PSU - Corsair HX1050

    Graphics cards:
    RTX 2060
    AMD RX 590
    GTX 1060 (6GB)

We ran the usual set of synthetics on the RX 590 which includes a host of benchmarks from 3DMark, Unigine, Compubench and a few others. Here's how the RX 590 fared.

In all our synthetic benchmarks, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 is evenly matched with the NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB variant. Since few benchmarks can actually flood the frame buffer, we don’t see any difference in scores. Most 3DMark benchmarks at their default configurations also run at FHD or lower resolutions. The RX 590’s larger frame buffer should prove itself in the gaming benchmarks at 1440p and 2160p, though the card really isn’t designed for the latter. The newer gen RTX 2060 that came out recently is ahead of both cards. However, it also is a lot more expensive than the RX 590 and the GTX 1060, so it’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison. We’ll be seeing how the RX 590 fares against the upcoming GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti which are supposedly the successors to the GTX 1060. Let’s move on to the gaming benchmarks.

In all our video game benchmarks, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 has a clear lead over the older NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB graphics card. Except for The Witcher 3, in all other games, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 gets higher frame rates at 2160p and 1440p. While the games aren’t playable at 2160p on any of these mid-range cards with all the eye-candy turned up, you could easily cut down on the AA and get playable frame rates. It would be a stretch so we don’t recommend it, just know that the possibility exists. The higher frame buffer of the RX 590 helps get better performance at 1440p and 2160p. Both cards use the older GDDR5 memory. Compared to the recently released RTX 2060, both the mid-range cards appear at a disadvantage.

    Pricing

The Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 is priced at Rs.26,900 on some of the popular computer specialist stores. The same SKU sells for about $265 which is roughly 25K INR with taxes, so this seems fairly contained and not the ridiculous pricing that we first saw with the RX 480 at launch. What sweetens the deal is that AMD is currently offering three AAA games with the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590, not one but three. Each worth Rs.2,999. If we were to offset this cost from the graphics card then we’re paying Rs.17,900 for this particular SKU and all other partner cards which are participating in the bundle offer.

To better understand this, we’ve plotted a graph to showcase value for money based on 3DMark Ultra scores for each of these cards vs their current India pricing. The blue line indicated the price-to-performance ratio while the red line is an indicator of the relative performance of the cards. Without the game bundle, the RTX 2060 offers the highest value for money when compared with the RX 590. The older GTX 1060 doesn’t even come close. However, when considering the bundle which effectively offsets Rs.9000 from the price, we end up with a clear winner. Moreover, this is an 8GB card which means there’s more memory, albeit slower than GDDR6, for games to run larger texture files on. The RX 590 with the game bundle is the best deal you can get right now. One might ask, why doesn’t AMD sell the card for Rs.17,900. Well, AMD doesn’t get these games at the retail prices so getting these games via AMD saves money for the consumer at the end of the day.  If we offset the cost of the additional memory then the GTX 1070 Ti appears as the better option. However, the two cards use different memory technologies. The RTX 2060 has the faster GDDR6 memory with a cumulative bandwidth of 336 GB/s while the GTX 1070 Ti tops out at 256 GB/s which means the RTX 2060 has more overhead and thus, lesser chances of bottlenecking. Please don’t get us started on SLI. TL;DR - The RTX 2060 gives you the best bang for your buck.

    Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 8GB Verdict

The RX 590 is an interesting graphics card. It's better than the stock GTX 1060 but might probably be bested by an overclocked GTX 1060. Apple iPhone 11 256GB detailed review

While the more expensive flagships got the ‘Pro’ moniker, the iPhone 11 is the default iPhone for the masses. If you look at the set of features, it’s not a massive upgrade over the iPhone XR considering the screen and the design largely remain the same. But the iPhone 11 is more tightly integrated with the features of the two more expensive flagships. For instance, its dual rear cameras are the same as on Pro models, and the hardware inside is also the same as the iPhone 11 Pro. On paper, you are losing out on the OLED display and the extra telephoto lens while gaining a larger display and a larger battery.

The fact that the iPhone 11 is a good phone to use is more or less established. For whatever the iPhone 11 offers and doesn’t offer, let’s see if it’s worth spending your money on.

    Performance

If you compare spec-sheets, the iPhone 11 will not match up to the Android flagships. Most high-end Android phones offer up to 12GB RAM, UFS 3.0 storage, and the likes. Apple never had to pack so much in the iPhones, and yet, the iPhones have outperformed Android flagships year after year. It’s the same with the iPhone 11. You get the best performance ever on a smartphone. What’s more, the performance is more or less the same as the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro. The reason is the Apple A13 Bionic chip. The chip itself bears many similarities with the A12 Bionic in the iPhone XR last year, but as Apple mentioned at the launch, there are now 8.5 billion transistors as against 6.9 billion in the previous generation. It’s still a six-core SoC made on the 7nm manufacturing process, along with a four-core GPU and an eight-core Neural Engine. However, Apple claimed a 20 percent boost in performance and 20 percent boost in graphics rendering, made possible primarily by improving the performance of each transistor.

Sure enough, the benchmark results pits the A13 Bionic on iPhone 11 higher than all other Android chipsets, and the A12 Bionic from last year. On AnTuTu, the iPhone 11 scored 408397, 14 percent higher than the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, and as advertised, 20 percent higher than what the iPhone XR scored last year.

On Geekbench 4, the iPhone 11 showed similar results with 5473 in single-core performance and 13765 in multi-core performance. Both these scores are around 20 percent higher than the Galaxy Note 10+ and the iPhone XR.

Clearly, the CPU performance is better than the best Android phone of the year, as well as the iPhone XR last year. As for GPU performance, the 4-core GPU works in tandem with Apple’s Metal API which improves textures and supports HDR in gaming. On 3DMark Slingshot, the iPhone 11 scored 5102, slightly higher than the score achieved by the Galaxy Note 10+, and around 29 percent higher than the iPhone XR. The results are similar on GFXBench Metal as well. Interestingly, the iPhone 11 scored higher than the iPhone 11 Pro in this test, but that’s primarily because the iPhone 11 has lesser number of pixels to render owing to the HD resolution of the panel.

Now benchmark numbers do peg the iPhone higher than the competition, but you don’t really need to run benchmarks to understand how fast the iPhone 11 is. In the real-world, the iPhone 11 works flawlessly. That’s in part because of how well Apple optimises the software, along with the improved hardware. No task is daunting and stressful enough for the smartphone, be it editing RAW files on Adobe Lightroom or playing Call Of Duty: Mobile or shooting 4K videos at 60 FPS. On Gamebench, the iPhone 11 clocked 59 FPS in both Asphalt 9 and PUBG Mobile, with 99 percent stability in both cases. The quality of graphics is visibly better than most other high-end Android phones we tested this year.

Now there used to be an argument on how there’s nothing in the Apple App Store that really stresses out the hardware. Apps and games common to both iOS and Android run equally well on the best Android phones as well as the iPhones. But with the new Apple Arcade, there’s now a good reason to demand superior hardware. The Arcade games have much better graphics and complex gameplay, with requires high usage of the GPU and CPU. Even there, on Redout Space Assault (an Apple Arcade exclusive title) the iPhone 11 delivers smooth 60 FPS with 99 percent stability. Interestingly, peak GPU usage is lesser at 77 percent as compared to 88 percent in PUBG Mobile, despite the former offering much better graphics than PUBG. The reason could be better optimisation considering how closely Apple works with game developers.

    Software

The iPhone 11 runs on iOS 13.1 out of the box. If you are coming from an Android device (like I did), this is where you might feel a little lost. But the interface is designed to make things as simple as possible. As a result, the learning curve is not all that steep. Apple users will feel right at home considering devices as old as the iPhone 6s have received the update to the latest version. There is now a system-wide dark mode and most of the popular apps are compatible with it. FaceID is now visibly faster and there are more granular controls of privacy including notifications for when an app is using location services, Wi-Fi and the likes. The Photos app have been consolidated further and it's much more intuitive than before and as such, there’s some change or the other in every native iOS feature.

iOS 13.1 brings new features like a swipe keyboard, a file browser, support for USB OTG, and more. Apple also suggests Siri shortcuts that can be useful for you based on how you use your phone. Most of these features have been missing from iPhones while even the budget Android phones now ship with them, but now that it’s there, iPhones are now even more intuitive and useful.

Like every year, it’s more beneficial to be on iOS if you’re further invested in the Apple ecosystem. iOS is known to work seamlessly with macOS as well as the new iPadOS. However, integration with Windows and Android is still a bit patchy. For instance, your backups are made on iCloud instead of Google Drive, so apps like WhatsApp cannot restore data from an Android device. Furthermore, sharing photos from the iPhone 11 to another Android device is a pain. AirDrop only works with other Apple devices and you cannot transfer files via Bluetooth. As a result, you have to rely on third-party apps like ShareIt and Xender, both of which are riddled with ads and might not be very safe, privacy wise.

    Battery Life

As we mentioned earlier, the A13 Bionic is more of an incremental ugprade from a performance standpoint. But in terms of efficiency, the new chipset is far more effective, offering longer screen-on time and performance per wattage. The iPhone XR last year offered excellent battery life, and with a larger 3110mAh battery, the iPhone 11 lasts even longer.

The iPhone 11 lasts 5 hours 9 minutes on the Geekbench Battery Test, and in real-world it easily lasts a day and a half. The difference is primarily because of how the iPhone 11 conserves power when the phone is in standby. When not in use, the battery discharge is minimal. However, if you put it to heavy use, the battery will drain in half a day.

We noted around 6 percent battery drain during 15 minutes of playing PUBG Mobile, while on Netflix, the drainage is around 7 percent watching content that supports Dolby Vision for 30 minutes. The iPhone 11 also comes with a fast charger out of the box that tops up the battery in around an hour and a half.

    Camera

Smooth performance and stable software have been characteristics of an iPhone for a long time now. But what has really improved is the camera performance. There’s more flexibility in the way you shoot and also for when you shoot photos and videos. For one, it now comes with two cameras at the back instead of one. The second lens is a 12MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.4 aperture. The primary 12MP sensor might seem the same as the iPhone XR with f/1.8 aperture, but the teardown of the phone reveals it’s actually a new sensor that comes with 100 percent focus pixels. There is a dedicated Night Mode that gets triggered when the scene you’re shooting is poorly lit. You can expose up to 7 seconds when the scene has minimal lighting, but usually, the phone will suggest exposure of around 2-3 seconds. You can even turn it off. The new ultra-wide lens offers a sweeping 120-degree field of view with very little barrel distortion. You get the option to zoom out to 0.5x, stay at the default 1x or use digital zoom to go up to 5x closer.  The viewfinder shows what you’re missing out when you’re not shooting in ultra-wide and the iPhone 11 can shoot a photo from both the lenses and let you choose the one you like later in post-production. But this requires shooting in the High Efficiency format which is not supported everywhere.

We have uploaded a bunch of photos in their original resolution in our Flickr Gallery and used some of the samples resized for the web to highlight why the iPhone camera is one of the very best out there —

    Shot on primary lens

    Shot on ultra-wide lens

The above samples were taken from atop the Burj Khalifa in Dubai during sunset. You can get a pretty good idea of how much more area the ultra-wide lens is able to cover. More than that, what’s notable is the dynamic range, especially from the ultra-wide lens. Even with the sun in the background and a haze hanging from the sky, the buildings are sharp and clearly visible.

    Shot on primary lens

    Shot from the ultra-wide lens

Once again, an example of the extra area that the ultra-wide lens covers, but more importantly, you can see the uniformity and consistency of both the lenses. I’m yet to see an Android phone switch from one lens to the other without altering the white balance, colour reproduction and exposure. In the iPhone 11, there’s practically no difference between the two photos apart from the wider field of view, be it in the form of sharpness, dynamic range, exposure and colour reproduction.

This is taken using the iPhone’s new Night Mode that automatically triggers when the scene is dark. Taken with the timer at 3 seconds, the resulting image is one of the sharpest we have seen from a smartphone in low-light. Every individual light from the buildings and the streets are clearly visible.

This is a low-light photo taken from the ultra-wide lens. Unfortunately, night mode does not work in this case, and as a result, the photo is underexposed near the bottom. However, even without night mode, the camera is able to bring out the curves of the building, control the light from the windows and darken the sky without resulting in much noise.

While dynamic range and low-light capabilities have improved, the iPhone 11 maintains the superior colour reproduction we have seen in previous generations. The sample above is a testament to that.

Speaking of colours, this sample shows how well the iPhone is able to handle varying shades of blue and contrasting brown and grey, with the textures of both the rocks and the sea intact.

We even tried out the ultra-wide in the desert to see the dynamic range and here too, the iPhone 11 left us amazed. Most smartphones with the ultra-wide lens tend to lower the details in the shadows while exposing the highlights. But not this one. And that’s what makes this camera a cut above the rest.

The iPhone 11 also went from taking portrait photos of only humans to now pets. The falcon in the photo was my subject, and it seems there’s work that needs to be done on this aspect. The edges of the falcon’s wing are blurred out indicating that the depth mapping of the subject is not 100 percent accurate. Having said that, the details that the portrait mode can generate is pretty astounding.

Lastly, we took an indoor shot of the hotel room with the afternoon sun pouring in from the windows. Here too, the phone was able to capture the details of the couch, the bag on the floor as well as what’s outside the window.

    Design and Display

The iPhone 11 retains the design that Apple debuted with the iPhone X, replete with a wide notch. As a result, it can now be easily distinguished amongst the crop of full-screen Android phones, not as much among older iPhones. Apple has improved the glass protection on the front and the back while the camera module is now housed in a huge square module in the top corner. The module, when we first got a glimpse of it, looked quite out of place, but in the final commercial unit, the camera module is nicely flushed with the glass body. The iPhone 11 is also IP68-rated water and dust resistant.

The iPhone 11’s display also remains the same as before. The 6.1-inch LCD panel which Apple calls LiquidRetina is one of the brightest panels at that price. Even the relatively lower resolution of the display doesn’t make it look inferior as compared to other phones at that price. In fact, the sunlight visibility of the iPhone 11 is the best we have observed among the OnePlus 7T Pro, Galaxy S10 and the likes. At its peak, we recorded brightness levels of 666 nits while the minimum brightness went all the way down to 4 nits. Despite an LCD pane, the iPhone 11 also supports Dolby Vision HDR. On supported content like in Netflix, Dolby Vision works to enhance the details in the darker areas, resulting in videos that look a lot more life-like.

    Bottomline

The most affordable iPhone this year is perfectly good for majority of people (who can afford it). The Pro variant offers an OLED display and adds a third camera at the back that offers optical zoom, and as such, a little more flexibility to the camera. If you can live without them, the iPhone 11 is more than enough. It’s also a great entry-point into Apple’s ecosystem considering the Rs 64,900 price-tag of the 64GB variant is near the same as the OnePlus 7T Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10e or the Galaxy Note 10. With the Google Pixel 4 not releasing in India and Huawei’s flagship Mate 30 Pro missing out on Google services, the iPhone 11 has a clear advantage this year.

The phone itself is quite flawless and unlike last year, Apple hasn’t compromised on the camera. The battery life of the iPhone 11 is also reassuring enough to skip the Galaxy S10 while the camera on the iPhone 11 makes it a class above the OnePlus 7T Pro. The only reason to not go for the iPhone 11 is the heavily guarded Apple ecosystem. If you have to work closely with other Android devices or Windows PCs, it’s better to stick to an Android phone for better inter-connectivity.

China Sends 9 Satellites Into Space In First Sea-Based Commercial Launch

Sea launch platforms will increase number of China's launch areas, an official said. (Representational)

    Beijing:

China has three inland space launch centres, where used rocket stages return to earth and sometimes pose a danger to inhabited areas. Sea launches would reduce that risk.

China has made its space programme a top priority in recent years as it races to catch up with the United States and become a major space power by 2030.

'And our mental health is a really serious issue. Perhaps now more than ever before. I WILL look at these issues beyond the sensational headlines.'

Victoria recorded just 42 new cases of coronavirus and eight deaths on Wednesday as regional Victoria is ramping up to return to Stage Two restrictions at 11.59pm.

Authorities are ramping up roadblocks, creating the so-called 'ring of steel' around Melbourne to ensure city residents do not try to take advantage of the eased regional measures.

Outdoor gathering limits in regional parts of the state will increase to 10 people from midnight on Thursday morning - as will weddings and outdoor religious gatherings.

Funerals will be allowed 20 mourners and regional Victorians can welcome five visitors from another nominated household.

Melbourne's lockdown rules remain unchanged and people cannot travel out of the city without specific reasons.

The premier said Melburnians should be inspired by the rolling back of restrictions, rather than disheartened.

'I'd encourage people not to see it that way and instead see this as proof positive,' he said.

The move comes after Mr Andrews was heavily criticised for a $290million plan to revive the state's crippled entertainment sector.

The under-fire premier unveiled a funding package on Monday to help the state's sole traders and entertainment industry survive when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Mr Andrews said the plan would turn the city into an al fresco dining hub - but the head of Melbourne's largest restaurant group has already labelled the proposal unworkable.

'The government thinks this is going to be some sort of outdoor Disneyland for dining, but it's not going to work,' Luca Restaurants chief executive Chris Lucas told the Herald Sun.

Premier Daniel Andrews has meanwhile flagged regional Victoria may move to the 'third step' of its roadmap plan as early as this week.

That step, allowing people to leave their homes without restrictions and hospitality businesses to reopen, is triggered if its 14-day average remains below five and no 'mystery' cases are recorded.

'There won't be a lot of notice,' Mr Andrews told reporters on Monday.

'That is preferable in making people wait for another week or so.

'Hopefully we can have very good news for regional Victoria tomorrow.'

Under the state government's plan, Melbourne's bars, cafes and restaurants can open for outdoor dining from October 26.

Melbourne will move to its next step of reopening on September 28 if the 14-day average falls to 30-50.

Eleven women at Ford have been recognised as outstanding leaders in their fields by the 2020 Autocar Great Women in the British Car Industry Awards.

Two nominees were also selected as their overall category winners – an outstanding achievement from a pool of hundreds of entrants. Sue Slaughter was chosen as the overall winner of the Operations category, and Josephine Payne as the overall winner of the Manufacturing category.

Susan Krusel, Vice President Communications and Public Affairs, Ford of Europe said: “We are proud to see an unprecedented number of our leading women be recognized for their achievements and the value they bring to evolving the automotive industry.  Not only have these women made significant contributions to improving our business, they also are great role models to encourage more women to pursue careers in the automotive field.”

Slaughter returned to the UK in 2018 having been COO for Ford’s joint venture gearbox maker Gertrag Ford Transmissions.

Payne has recently assumed responsibility as Craiova Vehicle Operations Assistant Plant Manager, overseeing the production of the new Ford Puma and Ford EcoSport vehicles at Ford’s plant in Romania. She joined Ford in 1996, and has overseen projects in Dagenham, Valencia, Mexico, Brazil and India.

In the Executive category, three Ford women were chosen as field leaders: Lisa Brankin, director, Passenger Vehicles and Mandy Dean, director, Commercial Vehicles, both from Ford of Britain, and Cathy O’Callaghan, Controller and CFO Automotive.

Hoar has worked extensively across purchasing including the management of purchasing electrified powertrains globally.

In the People Development category, Jane Skerry, executive director, Human Resources, is recognised as an industry leader. गैंगरेप से दहला यूपी: वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल (File Photo)

    Verdict

The Infinix Hot S3 has some potential on paper, but in the ends up being as the third or fourth choice. The phone does offer a good 18:9 aspect ratio display and features Android 8.0 out of the box, but the performance and the camera does require some overhauling.

    Infinix Hot S3 detailed review

There is no shortage of good smartphones these days if you have a modest budget. From dual cameras to big batteries or even 18:9 aspect ratio displays, you have plenty of options which cater to your varied needs. Among them is the Infinix Hot S3 smartphone which features some of these options. The phone is competitively priced at Rs. 8,999 and on paper (spec-wise) and in appearance the phone looks just as good as its competitors. That said, the Hot S3 trods on highly contested grounds and will face tough competition from the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Lenovo K8 Plus and more. Can it hold its ground? Let’s break down the results in this review.

    Build and Design

There was a time when budget smartphones were ugly and felt cheap, but not anymore. Most budget smartphones, these days, come with a unibody design and some even feature metal backplates. The Infinix Hot S3 features only the former, but that plastic back has a smooth matte finish to it, which does feel good in the hand. The 18:9 aspect ratio is a growing trend across smartphones and it’s quite useful in watching supported content. The Infinix Hot S3 is one of the few phones to offer that in the sub 10K bracket. The phone is not particularly good looking like the LG Q6, but the display is a distinguishing feature for now. The overall build of the phone seems average and the ergonomics even with that fairly large 5.65-inch display is quite good (in one hand). That said, we would have preferred if the phone offered a metal back to give it a more premium feel.

Furthermore, Infinix has tried to add some nice touches here such as the chamfered edges (on the plastic back) and the textured power button. A Type-C USB port would have been appreciated but maybe we are over-expecting.

    Display and UI

Like most smartphones, the Infinix Hot S3 also features a trusty IPS LCD display, which has good viewing angles and does get quite bright. The colour fidelity is very good, but the only problem we find with the display is the resolution. On a 5.65-inch display, you are only getting a 1440 x 720 HD+ resolution. This seems fine considering the low price tag, but in our experience, something just below 1080p resolution on a display this size is just about usable, nothing stunning.

As we observed before in our first impressions, the XOS interface looks a bit dated and our opinion hasn't changed after using the phone for longer. We appreciate the fact Infinix is providing Android 8.0 out of the box and the UI does not try to imitate iOS. However, the UI does not feel as refreshing or new as Android Oreo’s stock interface. The functionally, however, remains quite simple, with the standard no app drawer approach. You get a small set of pre-loaded applications such as PHX browser, Flipkart, etc. and some native apps such as music player, theme manager and more. While this is all simple and easy to use and understand, we think the UI integration could have been better. Apps like theme manager ask for calling permissions, which seem out of place. There is a memory cleaner button which gamifies the simple RAM cleaning experience to a neat animation. We do get the appeal of it, which gives users the false sense of achievement, but we think Infinix could have easily integrated this in the background instead. The other thing we noticed is the slight stuttering felt during scrolling. This is especially visible while browsing.

    Performance

Even more than stuttering, during our use we encountered persistent lags during app switching. We even had a few screen freeze moments during our use which did not instill any confidence in the UI. However, we think part of that problem is also the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. Combined with a 3GB RAM, our test unit kept up with day-to-day use, but it is not exactly fast. The performance it provides is good enough for low or medium workloads, but in 2018 the expectations from a budget phone have grown.

That doesn't mean you can't play games on it or can't stream videos and download music in the background at the same time. You can do all that, but you would have to be patient as you would encounter slightly longer load times than most of its competitors.

We also observed that the phone does get a bit warm while playing games or while recording a video, or even when the camera app is open. However, the phone never became uncomfortably hot in any test scenario.

We would also like to point out that the fingerprint scanner at the back works as it should but is a tad bit slower than what we are used to.

    Battery life

The battery life of the phone, on the other hand, is just average. Don’t be skeptical just yet as the category average is one day and this phone manages that easily. The phone only uses more battery while gaming and while using the camera, but that is true for most phones regardless of the price. Besides that, with Android 8.0 Oreo on-board, you do get better management of apps in the background, which again helps in the overall battery life. There are separate battery saver modes within settings which can be toggled on or off, should you need more juice out of the 4000mAh battery.

    Camera

On the camera front, you have a 13MP rear camera, which for the most part is not that consistent. It sometimes takes decent images and sometimes, the images tend to suffer from focusing issues. If you do get the focus right though, you get slightly oversaturated images, which most users would like. The image quality is satisfactory under normal lighting conditions, offering a good amount of details and decent subject separation. However, as soon as we moved indoors, the images lose most of their sheen with the level of details dropping significantly. Furthermore, the slower focus means you need an extra steady hand to nail that image capture. This makes it extra difficult to take images in HDR, where the camera takes even longer to capture the image. The good part is that the camera maintains colour consistency while capturing images in low light conditions, and the level of detail also lesser. You also need to take into account that you might have to take multiple images due to the lower focusing issues.

The front camera seems to be the main focus here though as Infinix Hot S3 markets this as a more selfie-focused device featuring a 20MP front-facing camera with flash. It does a really good job with better subject separation than almost everything we have seen in the price segment, but the inconsistent focusing issues persist. The colour saturation is good, but like most selfie phones, the camera relies on a softer focus by default to give you a more blemish-free look. You can put an extra effort by cranking up the beauty mode toggle, but we feel ‘être naturel’ is still the best. Anyway, the images are good enough for social media at best. Images in low light are average and like most smartphones with a front facing camera blinds you before it takes the image. The front-facing software enabled portrait mode is again something very similar to what you may find on other selfie centric devices and is definitely not a first for the price category either.

    Bottomline

The Infinix Hot S3 then does not make any big waves. It simply tries to do the same things many have tried and are trying. For the price, it does offer some good things like a usable selfie camera, 18:9 aspect ratio display and Android 8.0 out of the box, but all-in-all it's just good enough. You can definitely get better performance on other devices around the same price and a more consistent camera as well. There is no contest in terms of battery life as the Redmi brothers will win that easily. Hence, the Infinix Hot S3 ends up as just another phone which can be considered if you are unable to buy the Lenovo K8 Plus or a Xiaomi Redmi 4.

The Lumia 950XL isn't the phone that'll bring Microsoft the sales that it's looking for. The phone lacks good design elements for the asking price and there are just not enough apps on the Windows Store to recommend the phone to anyone. A lot of work needs to be done still.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Dual SIM detailed review

Microsoft has been undergoing change for a while now. From a new CEO, to Windows as a service, to its first laptop ever, to a game changing augmented reality headset and so on, the company has been talking the talk. However, what’s never change is the state of Windows Phone. With Windows 10 though, Microsoft showed us some impressive features, enough to have us excited about the new Lumia flagships. However, the numbers have been dwindling for a while now. Microsoft sold only 4.5 million Lumia phone last quarter, with a year-on-year decrease of 57 percent. In short, the future of Windows for mobile doesn’t look good.

So, in the face of such adversity, is the Lumia 950XL the right phone to bring Microsoft back? Here’s the review.

      Build and Design

When it started making Windows-based smartphones, Nokia once proved to all of us that metal doesn’t define premium. The company proved that a premium and good looking phone could be made out of polycarbonate material and be sturdier than many phones with metallic designs. But it’s not Nokia anymore is it?

Phones like the Lumia 830, 920 and 1020 will never be questioned on the design point of view, but frankly, the Lumia 950XL is a plastic brick that should just not cost as much as it does. It’s not that the phone is heavy, or the fact that it lacks metal. The Lumia 950XL, to me, just doesn’t look good. I understand that Microsoft wants to deliver similar experiences across price brackets, but the fact is that if I’m paying nearly Rs. 50,000, I want more than what Rs. 20,000 would get me.

In fact, the bit about delivering similar experiences across price segments is also changing with Windows 10, but more on that later. From a build point of view, the Lumia 950XL is light and thin enough, but too plasticky to belong in the price segment that it is being positioned in.

      Display

While Microsoft may have been stubborn about the build, the display is a different story. Lumia devices have always had some of the best displays in the market, the Lumia 950XL comes with a 5.5 inch AMOLED Clearblack QHD display. Interestingly, it seems while Microsoft did give in to the resolution race, it also made a clear point here. The Clearblack display looks as good in QHD as it did in FHD last year, and that’s just the point Microsoft has been making for ages.

Of course, it’s more effective while watching movies and viewing other content, but only slightly better. Bottomline, the display looks as good as ever and delivers a top notch touch experience, thanks to Gorilla Glass 4.

      UI

There’s not much to write when it comes to the UI Windows phones have used. Windows 10, like Windows 8 and 7 before it, delivers one of the smoothest UI experiences out there. It doesn’t look as colourful anymore though, which I think is good. The Windows 10 UI looks better suited to professionals and enterprise users, which I suspect is Microsoft’s target user-base.

What’s also worth noting is that Microsoft has made the experience snappier than before and quite similar to Android and iOS in some areas. While this is good, it just screams for Windows apps to be updated.

      The app situation..

Yes, the app situation is still dismal in the Windows Store. Microsoft is trying to turn it around by selling the Universal Apps concept to developers, and with 200 million PCs already on Windows, it may even work. However, Microsoft also needs to get the apps that are already available on the Windows Store to update to Windows 10. In the current version, apps like Zomato, Evernote, Twitter and almost any other, look mismatched with the rest of the UI and the feeling is terrible.

The concept of Universal Windows Platform (UWP) lets developers build for device families instead of a particular OS. Microsoft says it will allow apps to work seamlessly across phones, tablets and PCs and from what I see through Microsoft's own apps and third party apps like Flipkart, it is indeed quite smooth. With over 200 million PCs on Windows 10, Microsoft’s seems to be hoping developers will build apps for Windows PCs, which will just work on mobiles and tablets as well, giving the Windows Store a big boost. Well, it’s going to be difficult with dwindling sales numbers, but one can always hope.

      Performance

From a performance point of view, the Lumia 950XL is faster and snappier than any other Lumia smartphone till date. Of course, considering the fact that most of those other phones ran on the Snapdragon 400, there should be a more than substantial jump in performance, and the Lumia 950XL exhibits that from the get go.

Outlook works much faster, load times for apps (especially universal apps) load really fast and the phone just feels much more responsive than any other Windows-powered phone that I’ve used till date. Devices like the Lumia 930, 830 and others do not compare to the 950 XL.

Having said that, open Asphalt 8 and you once again shudder at the performance. It’s not that the game lags or is unplayable, the experience is just juddery, which is a result of the software and not the hardware. It further reinforces the belief that Microsoft wants this to be an enterprise phone rather than for the regular consumer.

Of course, the fact that this is a powerful phone was never in question ever since we saw continuum running on it. It's just not for gamers.

      Continuum

Speaking of which, Microsoft’s take on continuity amongst devices has been the most interesting so far. The Lumia 950XL, when connected to the Microsoft Display Dock, a monitor, keyboard and mouse, can function like a PC. Now here’s the thing, how many of us will really use that? More importantly, how many in India can afford to use that?

Cool and even useful as it is, the Microsoft Display Dock costs about Rs. 6000, which means the effective cost of your phone goes up to about Rs. 56,000. It’s a tough ask given the state of things with Windows is all I’m saying. In addition, the number of Universal Apps will be a big factor in whether continuum will be worth buying this phone for. For now, it works with Microsoft apps and some others, like Flipkart, and for those, it's pretty handy and fast.

      Windows Hello

Perhaps the only Microsoft feature in this phone that was really dissapointing was Windows Hello. Microsoft’s Iris-recognition tech is just not intuitive enough. When I’m sitting in brightly lit rooms, it keeps telling me to 'move closer' to the phone, while walking around outside, especially at night, Windows Hello is more or less useless. Most importantly though, even when it does work, it takes much longer than fingerprint sensors or even pattern or pin-based locks. It maybe useful on a Surface, which will be perched on a desk and unlocks in a second or two when you sit in front of it, but on a phone, it's just not intuitive enough to be used regularly. The time taken to type my six digit pin is much less.

      Camera

If you ask anyone what they like most about Lumia smartphones, their answer most certainly will be the camera. The 20MP snapper on the Lumia 950XL keeps that legacy alive, but doesn’t really improve on it. If you’re in brightly lit conditions or in outdoor sunlight, the 950XL will take some of the best shots possible and it does well with details and sharpness in indoor conditions also. The low light performance is also above average easily. The problem though is that this is all in the rich capture mode.

(L-R) Studio White Lights, Indoor Fluorescent Lights, Outdoor Bright Sunlight, Outdoor Bright Sunlight, Low Light

While brightly lit conditions are covered, in the auto mode, the Lumia 950XL will often have trouble dealing with unevenly lit conditions, with a glare on one side of the image or slightly lower details. In addition, while Microsoft has successfully reduced the shutter lag and processing time, the photos still do need post processing, which is done by the algorithm in the background, while you continue shooting.

Overall though, the 950XL will definitely rank amongst the best camera phones in the market today and if that’s all you want, it’s worth considering.

      Battery

The 3340 mAh battery on the Lumia 950XL is just about fine, meeting industry standards today. The higher screen resolution and more powerful processor are of course eating into it, but the Lumia 950XL should get most users through a full day quite comfortably. It’s not as good as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, but just a little better than the iPhone 6S

      Bottomline

If Microsoft is really serious about selling its phones, then the Lumia 950 XL isn’t the phone that’ll bring it to the fore. The app situation aside, if sales numbers do really matter, then Microsoft has to focus on what’s selling, instead of hoping that consumers will appreciate what it provides. Features like fingerprint sensors, a more premium body etc. are important and whether Microsoft does it or some other OEM does, it just has to be done.

This is the heartbreaking moment a chimpanzee was discovered in the boot of a car in Angola after being captured by wildlife poachers.

Animal workers discovered the female chimp - which they named Caita - covered in lacerations from a snare used to capture her, and with her hands and feet bound.

Staff from charity Wild@Life, based in Germany, said Caita had been beaten with a metal rod and was so badly injured that two of her fingers had to be amputated.

A spokesman for the charity explained they had been acting on a tip-off when they found Caita in the car on a busy street in Angola in August last year.

'We could not believe our eyes when they met with the situation in front of us,' the spokesman said.

'A female chimpanzee was tied up by her wrists and feet by thick ropes, her fingers were hanging off and she was in a great deal of pain and distress.

'She had been caught in a rusty snare, and her family murdered in front of her - they were to be sold for bushmeat.

'The two Poachers struck her across her back with an iron pipe, tied her up and threw her in the trunk of a car.'

The team took Caita to a nearby rescue centre where she survived for 11 days - slowly regaining her appetite as workers tried to treat her wounds.

But, sadly, she contacted tetanus from the snare and 11 days after being rescued she died from septic shock.

It is not known how long Caita was held in the trunk of that car, or whether she was to be sold alive or killed and cut up a part of the trade in animal parts.

Chimpanzees are often eaten as bushmeat, while their bones, blood, organs, and other body parts are used in various traditional medicines.

The two poachers have since been jailed for wildlife crimes.

A spokesman for Wild@Life added: 'Many are also sold to zoos and man-made safari parks where humans pay to keep them trapped and away from everything that is natural to them.

Caita survived for 11 days after being rescued, but contracted tetanus from the rusty snare used to capture her and eventually died from septic shock

'They are sold to laboratories where they're tortured in the name of science, too.

'None of these animals belongs anywhere but in the wild with their families.

'The ones who are rescued from humans are given everything possible to keep them safe and to enrich their lives but make no mistake, there is no replacement for their families and their wild homes.

'Wild@Life is continuously operating on the ground to rescue the victims of poaching.'

Alongside the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE and the iPad Air, Apple also announced the iPad 8th generation at the Time Flies event. The regular iPad is now a lot more powerful and starts from Rs 29,900 in India for the 32GB Wi-Fi variant. Here’s everything we know about the iPad 8 so far —

iPad 8th Generation Specs, features and accessories

The iPad 8th Gen runs on the Apple A12 Bionic chip, thus bringing the power of the Neural Engine to the iPad lineup for the first time and features a 10.2-inch Retina display and is available in 32GB and 128GB variants with either Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.

The biggest upgrade in the iPad 8 is actually the processor inside. With the power of the Neural Engine, things should improve significantly, as would the use cases. Apple claimed a 40 per cent boost in performance over the previous generation, and even threw in a comparison with a similarly-priced Windows laptop claiming it’s twice as fast.

Yet, with all the new things under the hood, the iPad 8 looks nothing like the new iPad Air or the iPad Pro. It sticks to the old design with a TouchID-enabled Home button and thick, chonky bezels around the display. It’s also 0.29-inches thick and weighs 462 grams. The iPad 8 will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold.

iPad 8th Gen launched in India

There’s a single 8MP camera at the back while on the front, the iPad 8 gets a 1.2MP camera for FaceTime calls. This is where things are lacking a bit, and you won’t get the latest options that’s popular in the latest iPhones, but who shoots photos from an iPad anyway?

Apple promises a day-long battery life with a 32.4-watt-hour battery, that includes 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, while on LTE that value dips to 9 hours.

As for accessories, we have bad news. The iPad 8 doesn’t support either the latest Apple Pencil or the Magic Keyboard. It does support the 1st-gen Apple Pencil though, which weirdly charges using the Lightning port, and it’s also a lot more useful with the latest iPadOS 14 update. Also, you can use the Apple smart keyboard with this, or opt for third-party solutions from brands like Logitech

You can also purchase smart covers for the iPad for Rs 4,500 available in black, white, deep navy, cyprus green and pink citrus.
