‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 trailer: An epic quests awaits Mando and Baby Yoda

Baby Yoda in Season 2 of ‘The Mandalorian’

The new trailer for Season two of The Mandalorian has been released, which features the titular character and The Child (Baby Yoda) making their journey to return the latter to its home planet.

Not much is revealed about the new season, except that it will feature actors such as Timothy Olyphant, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, and Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito.

There’s also footage of the Mandalorian (played by Pedro Pascal) ending up taking on a bunch of bad guys who dare to cross their path, while Baby Yoda disappears under the hood of its stroller to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.

Creator and showrunner Jon Favreau has also begun work on the third season of The Mandalorian as well, much to the excitement of fans.

The new season will premiere on Disney Plus on October 30.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle donate $130,000 to African girls' education charity after fans launched fundraiser in honor of both their birthdays

  • Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a $130,000 donation to education charity
  • Couple matched donations made by fans in honour of their recent birthdays
  • Harry and Meghan said there is 'no better way to celebrate what really matters'
  • Prince Harry celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday privately in Santa Barbara

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a $130,000 donation to an African girls' education charity to mark their recent birthdays, it has been revealed.

Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, pledged the money to CAMFED, which supports girls' education across the continent, and said there is 'no better way to celebrate what really matters'.

The couple made the donation yesterday after fans, who call themselves the Sussex Squad, launched a fundraising drive in honour of Harry and Meghan's birthdays on September 15 and August 4, respectively.

The campaign raised $129,000 and Harry and Meghan responded by matching the donations with their own $130,000 contribution.

Charitable donations are tax deductible in both the US and the UK. CAMFED is registered in both countries.

The couple have a long-standing relationship with CAMFED, which is a partner of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. Harry and Meghan serve as president and vice president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust and were allowed to retain their positions after stepping back from official royal duties this year.

Prince Harry visited a CAMFED project in Zambia in 2018 and paid a separate visit to the organisation during his solo visit to Malawi on the Sussexes' African tour in 2019.

The Duchess of Sussex met one of the regional leaders of CAMFED at a Women's Day event in London in 2019.

The money raised from the Sussex Squad Birthday Fundraiser 2020 will fund higher education scholarships for young women across Africa.

In a statement tweeted by the charity, the Sussexes said: 'No better way to celebrate what really matters. Thank you to everyone who donated, Harry and Meghan'.

The couple, who recently signed a $150million deal with Netflix, supported two charities to mark their son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor's birthday in May.

Meghan and Archie appeared in a video to promote a Save The Children literacy programme and the Duchess later revealed she had sponsored a kennel at London-based animal charity Mayhew, of which she is patron, in her son's name.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated Harry's birthday privately yesterday at their $14million Santa Barbara home.

The royal family marked the occasion by sharing well-wishes on Instagram and Twitter, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and the Queen all posting in honour of Harry's birthday.

However royal fans were outraged that Meghan did not appear in any of the four photographs posted to mark the occasion.

In response to William and Kate's photo, which shows the Cambridges and Prince Harry in a 2017 running race, one fan noted: 'There must have been hundreds of photos you could have picked, but you chose to post one of Harry, William and Kate. I’m sure not including Meghan wasn’t unintentional.'

Another fan posting on the Cambridges' account said it was 'shady' not to include the Duchess of Sussex when there are photos of the 'fab four' together. Another said simply: 'Interesting photo selection... No Meghan.'

However some pointed out that it is common for royal family members not to include husbands and wives in birthday photos, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did for Princess Anne's recent 70th.

It comes after the strain in relations between Prince William, 38, and Harry, who were once inseparable, were laid bare in the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes' biography Finding Freedom.

Co-author Omid Scobie later claimed the brothers went two months without speaking following the Sussexes' bombshell Megxit announcement.

The Duke of Sussex certainly has plenty to celebrate this year - his first birthday since he and Meghan quit the royal family and moved to California.

The couple recently signed a $150million deal with US media giant Netflix and paid back the £2.4million that was spent renovating Frogmore Cottage, their former home on the Queen's Windsor estate, further distancing themselves from the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also recently stepped up their public and virtual appearances as Covid-19 restrictions ease, with Prince Harry last week sending a video of support to soldiers taking part in a charity trek. Over the weekend Meghan took part in a video call with clients from her UK patronage Smart Works.

And according to royal experts, the Duke is 'happier than ever' as he celebrates his 36th birthday, and 'doesn't miss his old life at all'.

Omid Scobie, who co-authored the controversial royal biography Finding Freedom which raised eyebrows for its gushing praise and intimate knowledge of the Sussexes, the Prince is 'very content' with his marriage and family and 'thriving' in his professional life.

He told Vanity Fair: 'This is the moment [Harry] can sit back and think, "I made it".'

AstraZeneca has resumed British clinical trials of the vaccine, one of the most advanced in development for COVID-19, after they were paused earlier this month following a serious side effect in a trial participant.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 4:26 PM IST

Serum Institute of India has received Indian regulatory approval to resume local clinical trials of AstraZeneca’s potential COVID-19 vaccine, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The approval came from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), according to the source.

AstraZeneca has resumed British clinical trials of the vaccine, one of the most advanced in development for COVID-19, after they were paused earlier this month following a serious side effect in a trial participant.

Trials have also resumed in Brazil and South Africa, but remain on hold in the United States.

Indian regulators had allowed Serum’s trials of the AstraZeneca vaccine to resume under certain conditions, including increased safety monitoring and informing volunteers about new findings, a DCGI source said.

“We allowed them (to resume trials) after a detailed discussion with authorities in the UK and the company itself,” the source added.

Serum, the world’s biggest vaccine manufacturer, did not respond to Reuters requests for comment, while DCGI representatives did not respond to emails seeking comment.

Minister clarifies on Toyotas signal to stop expansion in India -

One Of Largest Known T. Rex Skeletons Up For Auction At Christie’s

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

  • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:42 PM IST

The British auction house Christie’s plans to sell the skeleton of one of the largest known Tyrannosaurus rexes in early October, the company said on Wednesday.

The dinosaur known as “STAN,”, approximately 67 million years old, was discovered in 1987 in South Dakota by amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison.

“He showed it to scientists at the time who unfortunately misidentified it as a triceratops,” James Hyslop, Christie’s head of Science and Natural History, told Reuters.

Triceratops remains are relatively common in the paleontological world, so the bones failed to garner much interest until Sacrison took them to the Black Hills Institute in South Dakota in 1992.

Researchers there “realized pretty quickly that they had something special in their hands,” said Hyslop. They recategorized STAN as a T. rex and mounted a new search to uncover the rest of the bones. They recovered 188 out of an estimated 300 total for any T. rex, Hyslop said.

Most T. rex skeletons are held by museums and private institutions. The auction is an opportunity for a private collector or institution to acquire the bones, Christie’s said.

STAN is 40 feet long and 13 feet high, Christie’s said. He is also notable for two fused vertebrae scientists have identified in his neck, suggesting the dinosaur broke his neck and survived during his lifetime. “The clue is in the name, the Tyrannosaurus rex,” Hyslop said. “He is the tyrant lizard king.”

Christie’s will display the dinosaur from Wednesday to mid-October at its Manhattan, New York location, the company said. It plans to book socially distant viewings for the public.

“We’ve got the skull displayed at ground level so that you can get really up close and personal with him and just see the serrations on his teeth,” Hyslop said. “His longest tooth is 11 inches long. It’s just terrifying to behold.”

Christie’s has estimated the value of the dinosaur at between $6 million and $8 million.

Verdict

The RX 590 is an interesting graphics card. It's better than the stock GTX 1060 but might probably be bested by an overclocked GTX 1060. However, getting the same chip out for three years in a row seems a stretch. AMD was clearly affected by Raja Koduri's exit but such technologies are developed well in advance. It wouldn't be wrong to assume that AMD does have something better for the mid-range segment especially given that the next generation of consoles are due to be launched in 2020 (most likely) and developer consoles have already gone out to major studios with specs akin to the final configuration. The Radeon VII should clue us into what the next generation is capable of, though it might be some time before we see a new architecture. For folks wondering if they should get an RX 590 for mid-range gaming, you most certainly should considering the fact that the included bundle makes this one of the sweetest deals you’ll get for a while. It’s a good mid-range graphics card but you couldn’t go wrong with a GTX 1060 or an RX 580 since all three cards are good at 1080p gaming. What you need to wonder is if you’d want three free games or not.

SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 8GB detailed review

AMD showcased a different strategy when it came out the Polaris range of graphics cards. The focus was now on the mid-range and entry-level cards first and the flagships would follow later. Roughly two-and-a-half years later, we’re looking at the same Polaris cards even today. Polaris itself was a marked improvement over the previous generation of Radeon graphics cards and the roadmaps certainly showcased an upward trend but we’re yet to see a worthy successor to the Polaris lineup. The recently announced Radeon VII seems like it would be turning things around. Hopefully, we’ll know in a few weeks.

Coming back to the Radeon RX 590, it is another revision of the RX 480. The RX 480 was followed by the RX 580 which had the same GPU configuration but sported slight improvements that allowed it to scale to slightly higher frequencies. However, the board power requirement also went up to 185 watts from 150 watts that the RX 480 was designed for. So one can’t really tell if the process improvements helped much given the increase in power consumption. Now that we have the RX 590 which is a slightly improved version of the RX 580, let’s see how it fares in the current environment.

AMD Radeon RX 590 Specifications

The three columns are practically the same since the GPU architecture has been the same. The clock speeds have improved a lot and the typical board power values have also risen to match the clock speeds.

The other key element that stands out is the move to a smaller process node. This has been at the centre of much debate with folks claiming that the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 12nm process node is simply an interpretation of Samsung’s 14nm process node. So it is actually 12nm? Well, none of the transistor sizes are actually what they seem to be. The actual values of the different components of the transistor are much larger than 12 or 14nm. Fabs simply call it 12nm or 14nm to keep things simple. The differences between two manufacturing processes are vast and what we get to read are simply marketing monikers to keep things simple. The fact here is that the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 12nm is an improvement over the 14nm process node and that’s why the RX 590 can clock higher. It definitely will consume more power which is why the TBP for the RX 590 is now 225 Watts while the GloFo 14nm based RX 580 was at 185 Watts. Simply bumping up the power to the board wouldn’t have allowed the average user to achieve these clocks.

Performance

Our test rig has been upgraded to keep up with the times and the new Windows releases. This means all our legacy scores are not comparable, specially given the fact that CPU performance has gone up by a significant margin. Here’s what we’re running at the moment.

Processor - Intel Core i9 9900K
CPU Cooler - Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM
Motherboard - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO
RAM - 2x 8 GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3200 MHz
SSD - Corsair MP510
PSU - Corsair HX1050

Graphics cards:
RTX 2060
AMD RX 590
GTX 1060 (6GB)

We ran the usual set of synthetics on the RX 590 which includes a host of benchmarks from 3DMark, Unigine, Compubench and a few others. Here's how the RX 590 fared.

In all our synthetic benchmarks, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 is evenly matched with the NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB variant. Since few benchmarks can actually flood the frame buffer, we don’t see any difference in scores. Most 3DMark benchmarks at their default configurations also run at FHD or lower resolutions. The RX 590’s larger frame buffer should prove itself in the gaming benchmarks at 1440p and 2160p, though the card really isn’t designed for the latter. The newer gen RTX 2060 that came out recently is ahead of both cards. However, it also is a lot more expensive than the RX 590 and the GTX 1060, so it’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison. We’ll be seeing how the RX 590 fares against the upcoming GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti which are supposedly the successors to the GTX 1060. Let’s move on to the gaming benchmarks.

In all our video game benchmarks, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 has a clear lead over the older NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB graphics card. Except for The Witcher 3, in all other games, the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 gets higher frame rates at 2160p and 1440p. While the games aren’t playable at 2160p on any of these mid-range cards with all the eye-candy turned up, you could easily cut down on the AA and get playable frame rates. It would be a stretch so we don’t recommend it, just know that the possibility exists. The higher frame buffer of the RX 590 helps get better performance at 1440p and 2160p. Both cards use the older GDDR5 memory. Compared to the recently released RTX 2060, both the mid-range cards appear at a disadvantage.

Pricing

The Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 is priced at Rs.26,900 on some of the popular computer specialist stores. The same SKU sells for about $265 which is roughly 25K INR with taxes, so this seems fairly contained and not the ridiculous pricing that we first saw with the RX 480 at launch. What sweetens the deal is that AMD is currently offering three AAA games with the Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590, not one but three. Each worth Rs.2,999. If we were to offset this cost from the graphics card then we’re paying Rs.17,900 for this particular SKU and all other partner cards which are participating in the bundle offer.

To better understand this, we’ve plotted a graph to showcase value for money based on 3DMark Ultra scores for each of these cards vs their current India pricing. The blue line indicated the price-to-performance ratio while the red line is an indicator of the relative performance of the cards. Without the game bundle, the RTX 2060 offers the highest value for money when compared with the RX 590. The older GTX 1060 doesn’t even come close. However, when considering the bundle which effectively offsets Rs.9000 from the price, we end up with a clear winner. Moreover, this is an 8GB card which means there’s more memory, albeit slower than GDDR6, for games to run larger texture files on. The RX 590 with the game bundle is the best deal you can get right now. One might ask, why doesn’t AMD sell the card for Rs.17,900. Well, AMD doesn’t get these games at the retail prices so getting these games via AMD saves money for the consumer at the end of the day.  If we offset the cost of the additional memory then the GTX 1070 Ti appears as the better option. However, the two cards use different memory technologies. The RTX 2060 has the faster GDDR6 memory with a cumulative bandwidth of 336 GB/s while the GTX 1070 Ti tops out at 256 GB/s which means the RTX 2060 has more overhead and thus, lesser chances of bottlenecking. Please don’t get us started on SLI. TL;DR - The RTX 2060 gives you the best bang for your buck.

Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 590 8GB Verdict

Apple iPhone 11 256GB detailed review

While the more expensive flagships got the ‘Pro’ moniker, the iPhone 11 is the default iPhone for the masses. If you look at the set of features, it’s not a massive upgrade over the iPhone XR considering the screen and the design largely remain the same. But the iPhone 11 is more tightly integrated with the features of the two more expensive flagships. For instance, its dual rear cameras are the same as on Pro models, and the hardware inside is also the same as the iPhone 11 Pro. On paper, you are losing out on the OLED display and the extra telephoto lens while gaining a larger display and a larger battery.

The fact that the iPhone 11 is a good phone to use is more or less established. For whatever the iPhone 11 offers and doesn’t offer, let’s see if it’s worth spending your money on.

Performance

If you compare spec-sheets, the iPhone 11 will not match up to the Android flagships. Most high-end Android phones offer up to 12GB RAM, UFS 3.0 storage, and the likes. Apple never had to pack so much in the iPhones, and yet, the iPhones have outperformed Android flagships year after year. It’s the same with the iPhone 11. You get the best performance ever on a smartphone. What’s more, the performance is more or less the same as the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro. The reason is the Apple A13 Bionic chip. The chip itself bears many similarities with the A12 Bionic in the iPhone XR last year, but as Apple mentioned at the launch, there are now 8.5 billion transistors as against 6.9 billion in the previous generation. It’s still a six-core SoC made on the 7nm manufacturing process, along with a four-core GPU and an eight-core Neural Engine. However, Apple claimed a 20 percent boost in performance and 20 percent boost in graphics rendering, made possible primarily by improving the performance of each transistor.

Sure enough, the benchmark results pits the A13 Bionic on iPhone 11 higher than all other Android chipsets, and the A12 Bionic from last year. On AnTuTu, the iPhone 11 scored 408397, 14 percent higher than the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, and as advertised, 20 percent higher than what the iPhone XR scored last year.

On Geekbench 4, the iPhone 11 showed similar results with 5473 in single-core performance and 13765 in multi-core performance. Both these scores are around 20 percent higher than the Galaxy Note 10+ and the iPhone XR.

Clearly, the CPU performance is better than the best Android phone of the year, as well as the iPhone XR last year. As for GPU performance, the 4-core GPU works in tandem with Apple’s Metal API which improves textures and supports HDR in gaming. On 3DMark Slingshot, the iPhone 11 scored 5102, slightly higher than the score achieved by the Galaxy Note 10+, and around 29 percent higher than the iPhone XR. The results are similar on GFXBench Metal as well. Interestingly, the iPhone 11 scored higher than the iPhone 11 Pro in this test, but that’s primarily because the iPhone 11 has lesser number of pixels to render owing to the HD resolution of the panel.

Now benchmark numbers do peg the iPhone higher than the competition, but you don’t really need to run benchmarks to understand how fast the iPhone 11 is. In the real-world, the iPhone 11 works flawlessly. That’s in part because of how well Apple optimises the software, along with the improved hardware. No task is daunting and stressful enough for the smartphone, be it editing RAW files on Adobe Lightroom or playing Call Of Duty: Mobile or shooting 4K videos at 60 FPS. On Gamebench, the iPhone 11 clocked 59 FPS in both Asphalt 9 and PUBG Mobile, with 99 percent stability in both cases. The quality of graphics is visibly better than most other high-end Android phones we tested this year.

Now there used to be an argument on how there’s nothing in the Apple App Store that really stresses out the hardware. Apps and games common to both iOS and Android run equally well on the best Android phones as well as the iPhones. But with the new Apple Arcade, there’s now a good reason to demand superior hardware. The Arcade games have much better graphics and complex gameplay, with requires high usage of the GPU and CPU. Even there, on Redout Space Assault (an Apple Arcade exclusive title) the iPhone 11 delivers smooth 60 FPS with 99 percent stability. Interestingly, peak GPU usage is lesser at 77 percent as compared to 88 percent in PUBG Mobile, despite the former offering much better graphics than PUBG. The reason could be better optimisation considering how closely Apple works with game developers.

Software

The iPhone 11 runs on iOS 13.1 out of the box. If you are coming from an Android device (like I did), this is where you might feel a little lost. But the interface is designed to make things as simple as possible. As a result, the learning curve is not all that steep. Apple users will feel right at home considering devices as old as the iPhone 6s have received the update to the latest version. There is now a system-wide dark mode and most of the popular apps are compatible with it. FaceID is now visibly faster and there are more granular controls of privacy including notifications for when an app is using location services, Wi-Fi and the likes. The Photos app have been consolidated further and it's much more intuitive than before and as such, there’s some change or the other in every native iOS feature.

iOS 13.1 brings new features like a swipe keyboard, a file browser, support for USB OTG, and more. Apple also suggests Siri shortcuts that can be useful for you based on how you use your phone. Most of these features have been missing from iPhones while even the budget Android phones now ship with them, but now that it’s there, iPhones are now even more intuitive and useful.

Like every year, it’s more beneficial to be on iOS if you’re further invested in the Apple ecosystem. iOS is known to work seamlessly with macOS as well as the new iPadOS. However, integration with Windows and Android is still a bit patchy. For instance, your backups are made on iCloud instead of Google Drive, so apps like WhatsApp cannot restore data from an Android device. Furthermore, sharing photos from the iPhone 11 to another Android device is a pain. AirDrop only works with other Apple devices and you cannot transfer files via Bluetooth. As a result, you have to rely on third-party apps like ShareIt and Xender, both of which are riddled with ads and might not be very safe, privacy wise.

Battery Life

As we mentioned earlier, the A13 Bionic is more of an incremental ugprade from a performance standpoint. But in terms of efficiency, the new chipset is far more effective, offering longer screen-on time and performance per wattage. The iPhone XR last year offered excellent battery life, and with a larger 3110mAh battery, the iPhone 11 lasts even longer.

The iPhone 11 lasts 5 hours 9 minutes on the Geekbench Battery Test, and in real-world it easily lasts a day and a half. The difference is primarily because of how the iPhone 11 conserves power when the phone is in standby. When not in use, the battery discharge is minimal. However, if you put it to heavy use, the battery will drain in half a day.

We noted around 6 percent battery drain during 15 minutes of playing PUBG Mobile, while on Netflix, the drainage is around 7 percent watching content that supports Dolby Vision for 30 minutes. The iPhone 11 also comes with a fast charger out of the box that tops up the battery in around an hour and a half.

Camera

Smooth performance and stable software have been characteristics of an iPhone for a long time now. But what has really improved is the camera performance. There’s more flexibility in the way you shoot and also for when you shoot photos and videos. For one, it now comes with two cameras at the back instead of one. The second lens is a 12MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.4 aperture. The primary 12MP sensor might seem the same as the iPhone XR with f/1.8 aperture, but the teardown of the phone reveals it’s actually a new sensor that comes with 100 percent focus pixels. There is a dedicated Night Mode that gets triggered when the scene you’re shooting is poorly lit. You can expose up to 7 seconds when the scene has minimal lighting, but usually, the phone will suggest exposure of around 2-3 seconds. You can even turn it off. The new ultra-wide lens offers a sweeping 120-degree field of view with very little barrel distortion. You get the option to zoom out to 0.5x, stay at the default 1x or use digital zoom to go up to 5x closer.  The viewfinder shows what you’re missing out when you’re not shooting in ultra-wide and the iPhone 11 can shoot a photo from both the lenses and let you choose the one you like later in post-production. But this requires shooting in the High Efficiency format which is not supported everywhere.

We have uploaded a bunch of photos in their original resolution in our Flickr Gallery and used some of the samples resized for the web to highlight why the iPhone camera is one of the very best out there —

Shot on primary lens

Shot on ultra-wide lens

The above samples were taken from atop the Burj Khalifa in Dubai during sunset. You can get a pretty good idea of how much more area the ultra-wide lens is able to cover. More than that, what’s notable is the dynamic range, especially from the ultra-wide lens. Even with the sun in the background and a haze hanging from the sky, the buildings are sharp and clearly visible.

Shot on primary lens

Shot from the ultra-wide lens

Once again, an example of the extra area that the ultra-wide lens covers, but more importantly, you can see the uniformity and consistency of both the lenses. I’m yet to see an Android phone switch from one lens to the other without altering the white balance, colour reproduction and exposure. In the iPhone 11, there’s practically no difference between the two photos apart from the wider field of view, be it in the form of sharpness, dynamic range, exposure and colour reproduction.

This is taken using the iPhone’s new Night Mode that automatically triggers when the scene is dark. Taken with the timer at 3 seconds, the resulting image is one of the sharpest we have seen from a smartphone in low-light. Every individual light from the buildings and the streets are clearly visible.

This is a low-light photo taken from the ultra-wide lens. Unfortunately, night mode does not work in this case, and as a result, the photo is underexposed near the bottom. However, even without night mode, the camera is able to bring out the curves of the building, control the light from the windows and darken the sky without resulting in much noise.

While dynamic range and low-light capabilities have improved, the iPhone 11 maintains the superior colour reproduction we have seen in previous generations. The sample above is a testament to that.

Speaking of colours, this sample shows how well the iPhone is able to handle varying shades of blue and contrasting brown and grey, with the textures of both the rocks and the sea intact.

We even tried out the ultra-wide in the desert to see the dynamic range and here too, the iPhone 11 left us amazed. Most smartphones with the ultra-wide lens tend to lower the details in the shadows while exposing the highlights. But not this one. And that’s what makes this camera a cut above the rest.

The iPhone 11 also went from taking portrait photos of only humans to now pets. The falcon in the photo was my subject, and it seems there’s work that needs to be done on this aspect. The edges of the falcon’s wing are blurred out indicating that the depth mapping of the subject is not 100 percent accurate. Having said that, the details that the portrait mode can generate is pretty astounding.

Lastly, we took an indoor shot of the hotel room with the afternoon sun pouring in from the windows. Here too, the phone was able to capture the details of the couch, the bag on the floor as well as what’s outside the window.

Design and Display

The iPhone 11 retains the design that Apple debuted with the iPhone X, replete with a wide notch. As a result, it can now be easily distinguished amongst the crop of full-screen Android phones, not as much among older iPhones. Apple has improved the glass protection on the front and the back while the camera module is now housed in a huge square module in the top corner. The module, when we first got a glimpse of it, looked quite out of place, but in the final commercial unit, the camera module is nicely flushed with the glass body. The iPhone 11 is also IP68-rated water and dust resistant.

The iPhone 11’s display also remains the same as before. The 6.1-inch LCD panel which Apple calls LiquidRetina is one of the brightest panels at that price. Even the relatively lower resolution of the display doesn’t make it look inferior as compared to other phones at that price. In fact, the sunlight visibility of the iPhone 11 is the best we have observed among the OnePlus 7T Pro, Galaxy S10 and the likes. At its peak, we recorded brightness levels of 666 nits while the minimum brightness went all the way down to 4 nits. Despite an LCD pane, the iPhone 11 also supports Dolby Vision HDR. On supported content like in Netflix, Dolby Vision works to enhance the details in the darker areas, resulting in videos that look a lot more life-like.

Bottomline

The most affordable iPhone this year is perfectly good for majority of people (who can afford it). The Pro variant offers an OLED display and adds a third camera at the back that offers optical zoom, and as such, a little more flexibility to the camera. If you can live without them, the iPhone 11 is more than enough. It’s also a great entry-point into Apple’s ecosystem considering the Rs 64,900 price-tag of the 64GB variant is near the same as the OnePlus 7T Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10e or the Galaxy Note 10. With the Google Pixel 4 not releasing in India and Huawei’s flagship Mate 30 Pro missing out on Google services, the iPhone 11 has a clear advantage this year.

The phone itself is quite flawless and unlike last year, Apple hasn’t compromised on the camera. The battery life of the iPhone 11 is also reassuring enough to skip the Galaxy S10 while the camera on the iPhone 11 makes it a class above the OnePlus 7T Pro. The only reason to not go for the iPhone 11 is the heavily guarded Apple ecosystem. If you have to work closely with other Android devices or Windows PCs, it’s better to stick to an Android phone for better inter-connectivity.

Beijing:

China has successfully sent nine satellites into orbit in its first commercial launch of a rocket from a platform at sea, state media reported on Wednesday.

The satellites, one of which belonged to video-sharing platform Bilibili, were deployed by a Long March 11 rocket from the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, media reported.

The Long March 11, designed to be deployed quickly and from mobile launch sites such as a ship, is mainly used to carry small satellites. The rocket made its first sea launch in June last year.

"Sea launch platforms will increase the number of China's launch areas, improve launch efficiency, and make launches safer and more flexible," the official People's Daily cited Li Zongli, director of the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, as saying.

China has three inland space launch centres, where used rocket stages return to earth and sometimes pose a danger to inhabited areas. Sea launches would reduce that risk.

China has made its space programme a top priority in recent years as it races to catch up with the United States and become a major space power by 2030.

Victoria recorded just 42 new cases of coronavirus and eight deaths on Wednesday as regional Victoria is ramping up to return to Stage Two restrictions at 11.59pm.

Authorities are ramping up roadblocks, creating the so-called 'ring of steel' around Melbourne to ensure city residents do not try to take advantage of the eased regional measures.

Outdoor gathering limits in regional parts of the state will increase to 10 people from midnight on Thursday morning - as will weddings and outdoor religious gatherings.

Funerals will be allowed 20 mourners and regional Victorians can welcome five visitors from another nominated household.

Melbourne's lockdown rules remain unchanged and people cannot travel out of the city without specific reasons.

The premier said Melburnians should be inspired by the rolling back of restrictions, rather than disheartened.

'I'd encourage people not to see it that way and instead see this as proof positive,' he said.

The move comes after Mr Andrews was heavily criticised for a $290million plan to revive the state's crippled entertainment sector.

The under-fire premier unveiled a funding package on Monday to help the state's sole traders and entertainment industry survive when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Mr Andrews said the plan would turn the city into an al fresco dining hub - but the head of Melbourne's largest restaurant group has already labelled the proposal unworkable.

'The government thinks this is going to be some sort of outdoor Disneyland for dining, but it's not going to work,' Luca Restaurants chief executive Chris Lucas told the Herald Sun.

Premier Daniel Andrews has meanwhile flagged regional Victoria may move to the 'third step' of its roadmap plan as early as this week.

That step, allowing people to leave their homes without restrictions and hospitality businesses to reopen, is triggered if its 14-day average remains below five and no 'mystery' cases are recorded.

'There won't be a lot of notice,' Mr Andrews told reporters on Monday.

'That is preferable in making people wait for another week or so.

'Hopefully we can have very good news for regional Victoria tomorrow.'

Under the state government's plan, Melbourne's bars, cafes and restaurants can open for outdoor dining from October 26.

Melbourne will move to its next step of reopening on September 28 if the 14-day average falls to 30-50.

गैंगरेप से दहला यूपी: वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल (File Photo)

Verdict

The Infinix Hot S3 has some potential on paper, but in the ends up being as the third or fourth choice. The phone does offer a good 18:9 aspect ratio display and features Android 8.0 out of the box, but the performance and the camera does require some overhauling.

Infinix Hot S3 detailed review

There is no shortage of good smartphones these days if you have a modest budget. From dual cameras to big batteries or even 18:9 aspect ratio displays, you have plenty of options which cater to your varied needs. Among them is the Infinix Hot S3 smartphone which features some of these options. The phone is competitively priced at Rs. 8,999 and on paper (spec-wise) and in appearance the phone looks just as good as its competitors. That said, the Hot S3 trods on highly contested grounds and will face tough competition from the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Lenovo K8 Plus and more. Can it hold its ground? Let’s break down the results in this review.

Build and Design

There was a time when budget smartphones were ugly and felt cheap, but not anymore. Most budget smartphones, these days, come with a unibody design and some even feature metal backplates. The Infinix Hot S3 features only the former, but that plastic back has a smooth matte finish to it, which does feel good in the hand. The 18:9 aspect ratio is a growing trend across smartphones and it’s quite useful in watching supported content. The Infinix Hot S3 is one of the few phones to offer that in the sub 10K bracket. The phone is not particularly good looking like the LG Q6, but the display is a distinguishing feature for now. The overall build of the phone seems average and the ergonomics even with that fairly large 5.65-inch display is quite good (in one hand). That said, we would have preferred if the phone offered a metal back to give it a more premium feel.

Furthermore, Infinix has tried to add some nice touches here such as the chamfered edges (on the plastic back) and the textured power button. A Type-C USB port would have been appreciated but maybe we are over-expecting.

Display and UI

Like most smartphones, the Infinix Hot S3 also features a trusty IPS LCD display, which has good viewing angles and does get quite bright. The colour fidelity is very good, but the only problem we find with the display is the resolution. On a 5.65-inch display, you are only getting a 1440 x 720 HD+ resolution. This seems fine considering the low price tag, but in our experience, something just below 1080p resolution on a display this size is just about usable, nothing stunning.

As we observed before in our first impressions, the XOS interface looks a bit dated and our opinion hasn't changed after using the phone for longer. We appreciate the fact Infinix is providing Android 8.0 out of the box and the UI does not try to imitate iOS. However, the UI does not feel as refreshing or new as Android Oreo’s stock interface. The functionally, however, remains quite simple, with the standard no app drawer approach. You get a small set of pre-loaded applications such as PHX browser, Flipkart, etc. and some native apps such as music player, theme manager and more. While this is all simple and easy to use and understand, we think the UI integration could have been better. Apps like theme manager ask for calling permissions, which seem out of place. There is a memory cleaner button which gamifies the simple RAM cleaning experience to a neat animation. We do get the appeal of it, which gives users the false sense of achievement, but we think Infinix could have easily integrated this in the background instead. The other thing we noticed is the slight stuttering felt during scrolling. This is especially visible while browsing.

Performance

Even more than stuttering, during our use we encountered persistent lags during app switching. We even had a few screen freeze moments during our use which did not instill any confidence in the UI. However, we think part of that problem is also the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. Combined with a 3GB RAM, our test unit kept up with day-to-day use, but it is not exactly fast. The performance it provides is good enough for low or medium workloads, but in 2018 the expectations from a budget phone have grown.

That doesn't mean you can't play games on it or can't stream videos and download music in the background at the same time. You can do all that, but you would have to be patient as you would encounter slightly longer load times than most of its competitors.

We also observed that the phone does get a bit warm while playing games or while recording a video, or even when the camera app is open. However, the phone never became uncomfortably hot in any test scenario.

We would also like to point out that the fingerprint scanner at the back works as it should but is a tad bit slower than what we are used to.

Battery life

The battery life of the phone, on the other hand, is just average. Don’t be skeptical just yet as the category average is one day and this phone manages that easily. The phone only uses more battery while gaming and while using the camera, but that is true for most phones regardless of the price. Besides that, with Android 8.0 Oreo on-board, you do get better management of apps in the background, which again helps in the overall battery life. There are separate battery saver modes within settings which can be toggled on or off, should you need more juice out of the 4000mAh battery.

Camera

On the camera front, you have a 13MP rear camera, which for the most part is not that consistent. It sometimes takes decent images and sometimes, the images tend to suffer from focusing issues. If you do get the focus right though, you get slightly oversaturated images, which most users would like. The image quality is satisfactory under normal lighting conditions, offering a good amount of details and decent subject separation. However, as soon as we moved indoors, the images lose most of their sheen with the level of details dropping significantly. Furthermore, the slower focus means you need an extra steady hand to nail that image capture. This makes it extra difficult to take images in HDR, where the camera takes even longer to capture the image. The good part is that the camera maintains colour consistency while capturing images in low light conditions, and the level of detail also lesser. You also need to take into account that you might have to take multiple images due to the lower focusing issues.

The front camera seems to be the main focus here though as Infinix Hot S3 markets this as a more selfie-focused device featuring a 20MP front-facing camera with flash. It does a really good job with better subject separation than almost everything we have seen in the price segment, but the inconsistent focusing issues persist. The colour saturation is good, but like most selfie phones, the camera relies on a softer focus by default to give you a more blemish-free look. You can put an extra effort by cranking up the beauty mode toggle, but we feel ‘être naturel’ is still the best. Anyway, the images are good enough for social media at best. Images in low light are average and like most smartphones with a front facing camera blinds you before it takes the image. The front-facing software enabled portrait mode is again something very similar to what you may find on other selfie centric devices and is definitely not a first for the price category either.

Bottomline

The Infinix Hot S3 then does not make any big waves. It simply tries to do the same things many have tried and are trying. For the price, it does offer some good things like a usable selfie camera, 18:9 aspect ratio display and Android 8.0 out of the box, but all-in-all it's just good enough. You can definitely get better performance on other devices around the same price and a more consistent camera as well. There is no contest in terms of battery life as the Redmi brothers will win that easily. Hence, the Infinix Hot S3 ends up as just another phone which can be considered if you are unable to buy the Lenovo K8 Plus or a Xiaomi Redmi 4.

The Lumia 950XL isn't the phone that'll bring Microsoft the sales that it's looking for. The phone lacks good design elements for the asking price and there are just not enough apps on the Windows Store to recommend the phone to anyone. A lot of work needs to be done still.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Dual SIM detailed review

Microsoft has been undergoing change for a while now. From a new CEO, to Windows as a service, to its first laptop ever, to a game changing augmented reality headset and so on, the company has been talking the talk. However, what’s never change is the state of Windows Phone. With Windows 10 though, Microsoft showed us some impressive features, enough to have us excited about the new Lumia flagships. However, the numbers have been dwindling for a while now. Microsoft sold only 4.5 million Lumia phone last quarter, with a year-on-year decrease of 57 percent. In short, the future of Windows for mobile doesn’t look good.

So, in the face of such adversity, is the Lumia 950XL the right phone to bring Microsoft back? Here’s the review.

    Build and Design

When it started making Windows-based smartphones, Nokia once proved to all of us that metal doesn’t define premium. The company proved that a premium and good looking phone could be made out of polycarbonate material and be sturdier than many phones with metallic designs. But it’s not Nokia anymore is it?

Phones like the Lumia 830, 920 and 1020 will never be questioned on the design point of view, but frankly, the Lumia 950XL is a plastic brick that should just not cost as much as it does. It’s not that the phone is heavy, or the fact that it lacks metal. The Lumia 950XL, to me, just doesn’t look good. I understand that Microsoft wants to deliver similar experiences across price brackets, but the fact is that if I’m paying nearly Rs. 50,000, I want more than what Rs. 20,000 would get me.

In fact, the bit about delivering similar experiences across price segments is also changing with Windows 10, but more on that later. From a build point of view, the Lumia 950XL is light and thin enough, but too plasticky to belong in the price segment that it is being positioned in.

    Display

While Microsoft may have been stubborn about the build, the display is a different story. Lumia devices have always had some of the best displays in the market, the Lumia 950XL comes with a 5.5 inch AMOLED Clearblack QHD display. Interestingly, it seems while Microsoft did give in to the resolution race, it also made a clear point here. The Clearblack display looks as good in QHD as it did in FHD last year, and that’s just the point Microsoft has been making for ages.

Of course, it’s more effective while watching movies and viewing other content, but only slightly better. Bottomline, the display looks as good as ever and delivers a top notch touch experience, thanks to Gorilla Glass 4.

    UI

There’s not much to write when it comes to the UI Windows phones have used. Windows 10, like Windows 8 and 7 before it, delivers one of the smoothest UI experiences out there. It doesn’t look as colourful anymore though, which I think is good. The Windows 10 UI looks better suited to professionals and enterprise users, which I suspect is Microsoft’s target user-base.

What’s also worth noting is that Microsoft has made the experience snappier than before and quite similar to Android and iOS in some areas. While this is good, it just screams for Windows apps to be updated.

    The app situation..

Yes, the app situation is still dismal in the Windows Store. Microsoft is trying to turn it around by selling the Universal Apps concept to developers, and with 200 million PCs already on Windows, it may even work. However, Microsoft also needs to get the apps that are already available on the Windows Store to update to Windows 10. In the current version, apps like Zomato, Evernote, Twitter and almost any other, look mismatched with the rest of the UI and the feeling is terrible.

The concept of Universal Windows Platform (UWP) lets developers build for device families instead of a particular OS. Microsoft says it will allow apps to work seamlessly across phones, tablets and PCs and from what I see through Microsoft's own apps and third party apps like Flipkart, it is indeed quite smooth. With over 200 million PCs on Windows 10, Microsoft’s seems to be hoping developers will build apps for Windows PCs, which will just work on mobiles and tablets as well, giving the Windows Store a big boost. Well, it’s going to be difficult with dwindling sales numbers, but one can always hope.

    Performance

From a performance point of view, the Lumia 950XL is faster and snappier than any other Lumia smartphone till date. Of course, considering the fact that most of those other phones ran on the Snapdragon 400, there should be a more than substantial jump in performance, and the Lumia 950XL exhibits that from the get go.

Outlook works much faster, load times for apps (especially universal apps) load really fast and the phone just feels much more responsive than any other Windows-powered phone that I’ve used till date. Devices like the Lumia 930, 830 and others do not compare to the 950 XL.

Having said that, open Asphalt 8 and you once again shudder at the performance. It’s not that the game lags or is unplayable, the experience is just juddery, which is a result of the software and not the hardware. It further reinforces the belief that Microsoft wants this to be an enterprise phone rather than for the regular consumer.

Of course, the fact that this is a powerful phone was never in question ever since we saw continuum running on it. It's just not for gamers.

    Continuum

Speaking of which, Microsoft’s take on continuity amongst devices has been the most interesting so far. The Lumia 950XL, when connected to the Microsoft Display Dock, a monitor, keyboard and mouse, can function like a PC. Now here’s the thing, how many of us will really use that? More importantly, how many in India can afford to use that?

Cool and even useful as it is, the Microsoft Display Dock costs about Rs. 6000, which means the effective cost of your phone goes up to about Rs. 56,000. It’s a tough ask given the state of things with Windows is all I’m saying. In addition, the number of Universal Apps will be a big factor in whether continuum will be worth buying this phone for. For now, it works with Microsoft apps and some others, like Flipkart, and for those, it's pretty handy and fast.

    Windows Hello

Perhaps the only Microsoft feature in this phone that was really dissapointing was Windows Hello. Microsoft’s Iris-recognition tech is just not intuitive enough. When I’m sitting in brightly lit rooms, it keeps telling me to 'move closer' to the phone, while walking around outside, especially at night, Windows Hello is more or less useless. Most importantly though, even when it does work, it takes much longer than fingerprint sensors or even pattern or pin-based locks. It maybe useful on a Surface, which will be perched on a desk and unlocks in a second or two when you sit in front of it, but on a phone, it's just not intuitive enough to be used regularly. The time taken to type my six digit pin is much less.

    Camera

If you ask anyone what they like most about Lumia smartphones, their answer most certainly will be the camera. The 20MP snapper on the Lumia 950XL keeps that legacy alive, but doesn’t really improve on it. If you’re in brightly lit conditions or in outdoor sunlight, the 950XL will take some of the best shots possible and it does well with details and sharpness in indoor conditions also. The low light performance is also above average easily. The problem though is that this is all in the rich capture mode.

(L-R) Studio White Lights, Indoor Fluorescent Lights, Outdoor Bright Sunlight, Outdoor Bright Sunlight, Low Light

While brightly lit conditions are covered, in the auto mode, the Lumia 950XL will often have trouble dealing with unevenly lit conditions, with a glare on one side of the image or slightly lower details. In addition, while Microsoft has successfully reduced the shutter lag and processing time, the photos still do need post processing, which is done by the algorithm in the background, while you continue shooting.

Overall though, the 950XL will definitely rank amongst the best camera phones in the market today and if that’s all you want, it’s worth considering.

    Battery

The 3340 mAh battery on the Lumia 950XL is just about fine, meeting industry standards today. The higher screen resolution and more powerful processor are of course eating into it, but the Lumia 950XL should get most users through a full day quite comfortably. It’s not as good as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, but just a little better than the iPhone 6S

    Bottomline

If Microsoft is really serious about selling its phones, then the Lumia 950 XL isn’t the phone that’ll bring it to the fore. The app situation aside, if sales numbers do really matter, then Microsoft has to focus on what’s selling, instead of hoping that consumers will appreciate what it provides. Features like fingerprint sensors, a more premium body etc. are important and whether Microsoft does it or some other OEM does, it just has to be done.

This is the heartbreaking moment a chimpanzee was discovered in the boot of a car in Angola after being captured by wildlife poachers.

Animal workers discovered the female chimp - which they named Caita - covered in lacerations from a snare used to capture her, and with her hands and feet bound.

Staff from charity Wild@Life, based in Germany, said Caita had been beaten with a metal rod and was so badly injured that two of her fingers had to be amputated.

A spokesman for the charity explained they had been acting on a tip-off when they found Caita in the car on a busy street in Angola in August last year.

'We could not believe our eyes when they met with the situation in front of us,' the spokesman said.

'A female chimpanzee was tied up by her wrists and feet by thick ropes, her fingers were hanging off and she was in a great deal of pain and distress.

'She had been caught in a rusty snare, and her family murdered in front of her - they were to be sold for bushmeat.

'The two Poachers struck her across her back with an iron pipe, tied her up and threw her in the trunk of a car.'

The team took Caita to a nearby rescue centre where she survived for 11 days - slowly regaining her appetite as workers tried to treat her wounds.

But, sadly, she contacted tetanus from the snare and 11 days after being rescued she died from septic shock.

It is not known how long Caita was held in the trunk of that car, or whether she was to be sold alive or killed and cut up a part of the trade in animal parts.

Chimpanzees are often eaten as bushmeat, while their bones, blood, organs, and other body parts are used in various traditional medicines.

The two poachers have since been jailed for wildlife crimes.

A spokesman for Wild@Life added: 'Many are also sold to zoos and man-made safari parks where humans pay to keep them trapped and away from everything that is natural to them.

Caita survived for 11 days after being rescued, but contracted tetanus from the rusty snare used to capture her and eventually died from septic shock

'They are sold to laboratories where they're tortured in the name of science, too.

'None of these animals belongs anywhere but in the wild with their families.

'The ones who are rescued from humans are given everything possible to keep them safe and to enrich their lives but make no mistake, there is no replacement for their families and their wild homes.

'Wild@Life is continuously operating on the ground to rescue the victims of poaching.'

Alongside the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE and the iPad Air, Apple also announced the iPad 8th generation at the Time Flies event. The regular iPad is now a lot more powerful and starts from Rs 29,900 in India for the 32GB Wi-Fi variant. Here’s everything we know about the iPad 8 so far —

iPad 8th Generation Specs, features and accessories

The iPad 8th Gen runs on the Apple A12 Bionic chip, thus bringing the power of the Neural Engine to the iPad lineup for the first time and features a 10.2-inch Retina display and is available in 32GB and 128GB variants with either Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.

The biggest upgrade in the iPad 8 is actually the processor inside. With the power of the Neural Engine, things should improve significantly, as would the use cases. Apple claimed a 40 per cent boost in performance over the previous generation, and even threw in a comparison with a similarly-priced Windows laptop claiming it’s twice as fast.

Yet, with all the new things under the hood, the iPad 8 looks nothing like the new iPad Air or the iPad Pro. It sticks to the old design with a TouchID-enabled Home button and thick, chonky bezels around the display. It’s also 0.29-inches thick and weighs 462 grams. The iPad 8 will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold.

iPad 8th Gen launched in India

There’s a single 8MP camera at the back while on the front, the iPad 8 gets a 1.2MP camera for FaceTime calls. This is where things are lacking a bit, and you won’t get the latest options that’s popular in the latest iPhones, but who shoots photos from an iPad anyway?

Apple promises a day-long battery life with a 32.4-watt-hour battery, that includes 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, while on LTE that value dips to 9 hours.

As for accessories, we have bad news. The iPad 8 doesn’t support either the latest Apple Pencil or the Magic Keyboard. It does support the 1st-gen Apple Pencil though, which weirdly charges using the Lightning port, and it’s also a lot more useful with the latest iPadOS 14 update. Also, you can use the Apple smart keyboard with this, or opt for third-party solutions from brands like Logitech

The iPad 8 starts at Rs 29,900 for the 32GB variant with Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi+Cellular model starts from Rs 41,900. The 1st-gen Apple Pencil is priced Rs 8,500 while the Smart Keyboard is priced Rs 13,900. You can also purchase smart covers for the iPad for Rs 4,500 available in black, white, deep navy, cyprus green and pink citrus. Apple has not announced a release date for the iPad in India, but the company stated it would be available soon with Apple authorised retailers.

SAN DIEGO: Tony Gonsolin quieted San Diegos bats for seven innings, Edwin Rios homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers won 3-1 Tuesday night to snap the Padres eight-game winning streak and regain a 2 -game lead in the NL West.

The seven-time NL West champion Dodgers, being pushed by a Padres team that hasnt been to the playoffs since winning the division in 2006, bounced back from a 7-2 loss in the opener of the series between the NLs two best teams.

The Padres, cruising toward a berth in the expanded playoffs, lost for just the third time in 15 games.

Kenley Jansen made it interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with one out before striking out Wil Myers and rookie Jake Cronenworth to record his 11th save in 13 chances.

Justin Turner had three singles in his return from the injured list, including an RBI hit in the first off Zach Davies (7-3), who had his career-high streak of five straight victories snapped.

Reigning NL MVP Cody Bellinger also had an RBI single, in the third, and Rios made it 3-1 when he homered deep into the seats in right leading off the fifth, his fourth.

Gonsolin (1-1) held the Padres to one run and four hits, struck out two and walked none.

The 26-year-old rookie kept the Padres off balance except for the third, when they manufactured one run. Jurickson Profar hit a leadoff double over right fielder Mookie Betts, advanced on Greg Garcias sacrifice and scored when Trent Grisham beat out a bunt for a single.

After Grishams single, Gonsolin retired 14 of the next 15 batters.

Davies, who also lost to the Dodgers on Aug. 12, allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings, struck out five and walked one.

      TRAINERS ROOM

Dodgers: Activated Turner from the 10-day injured list. He missed 13 games with a left hamstring strain. Before going on the IL, Turner was batting .282 with two homers and 20 RBIs in 32 games during the shortened season. He started at DH. In a corresponding roster move, the Dodgers optioned RHP Josh Sborz. … Reliever Caleb Ferguson left with an undisclosed injury after facing just one batter in the eighth.

      UP NEXT

Dodgers: RHP Dustin May (1-1, 2.81 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale Wednesday afternoon. Both of his decisions came against San Diego.

Padres: Were expected to name starter after Tuesday nights game.

EU Exec To Propose Framework For Minimal Wage In EU

The European Commission will propose a framework for minimum wages in the 27nation bloc, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech on Wednesday.

      • Last Updated: September 16, 2020, 2:30 PM IST

BRUSSELS: The European Commission will propose a framework for minimum wages in the 27-nation bloc, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said in a speech on Wednesday.

“For too many people, work no longer pays,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament in an annual policy speech. “Dumping wages destroys the dignity of work, penalises the entrepreneur who pays decent wages and distorts fair competition in the Single Market,” she said.

The issue is politically tricky so the Commission is not trying to set a single EU minimum wage or to impose one minimum wage setting system for all of the 27 countries in the bloc.

Instead, it wants to ensure there is a collective bargaining for wages in place, that different national systems have clear and stable criteria, that trade unions and employers are involved in the process, that there are few exemptions and that there are monitoring mechanisms in place.

“I am a strong advocate of collective bargaining and the proposal will fully respect national competencies and traditions,” von der Leyen said.

Minimum wages vary widely in EU countries — in July 2020 ranged from 312 euros a month in Bulgaria to 2,142 euro a month in Luxembourg.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its first meeting in Srinagar on Wednesday in more than a year after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5 last year.

The meeting held at the PDP headquarter was attended by party leaders Abdul Rehman Veeri, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, Khursheed Aalam, Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, Suhail Bukhari among others.

However, party president Mehbooba Mufti continues to remain under house arrest. Earlier, a meeting called by the party could not take place after most of the party leaders were not allowed to move out of their residences.

PDP leader Suhail Bukhari said for the first time the party's youth leadership was allowed to move out of their residences and hold the meeting at the party office.

Welcoming the PDP meet, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: "Good to see Youth JKPDP make a start with political meetings. Political activities must resume unhindered and the administration is duty bound to ensure a level playing field for all political parties."

Digital is the future; Covid-19 baggage slowing down M&E revival: Markand Adhikari, Chairman and Managing Director, SAB Group

      By: |
      Updated: Sep 16, 2020 9:09 AM

In an exclusive meeting with Financial Express Online, Markand Adhikari, Chairman and Managing Director, SAB Group, talked about his journey of 40-year, the advancing substance utilization situation, effect of COVID-19 on M&E industry and substantially more. Excerpts:

Sri Adhikari Brothers Group, Indian televion industry, Markand Adhikari, Gautam Adhikari, Sony Pictures Networks, covid 19, SAB Group, M&E industryMarkand Adhikari, Chairman and Managing Director, SAB Group

The Sri Adhikari Brothers Group is a known name in Indian television industry and they have been associated with TV for ages. One of the early birds in TV industry they started as a little family-claimed association firm by siblings Markand Adhikari and late Gautam Adhikari in 1985, turned into the first openly recorded TV creation organization. SAB TV (which is presently essential for the Sony Pictures Networks bouquet) as of late finished 20 years in the business, while SAB Group’s mainstream music channel Mastii has finished 10 years in the business. In an exclusive meeting with Financial Express Online, Markand Adhikari, Chairman and Managing Director, SAB Group, talked about his journey of 40-year, the advancing substance utilization situation, effect of COVID-19 on M&E industry and substantially more. Excerpts:

Two Decades in the market for SAB Group & Four decades of your contribution in this Industry – What have been the key milestones in this journey?

It has been an incredible journey so far. SAB Group has been active in Broadcasting for 20 years now, and my experience during the overall 40 years of my experience is unparalleled. SAB Group being a core media conglomerate, had commenced its journey through a small advertising agency. My late brother Gautam was an art director back then. In the early ’80s, Doordarshan was so immensely popular that we used to approach them for sponsoring entertainment programs. For almost ten years, we continued programmes on Doordarshan- both national and regional. We produced many popular daily programmes like “Shrimaan Shrimati,” “All The Best,” “Hello Inspector,” “Waqt Ki Raftar,” “Suraag,” and many more of around thousands of hours for Doordarshan.

We were the first ones to be approached to produce programs such as “Commander” and Philips Top Ten” by the first satellite television ZEE TV in 1991. For the overseas UK based channel- TV Asia, we had created new programs. We were one of the first media/production houses listed on both the Stock Exchanges: BSE and NSE in the year 1995. That was how SAB TV was founded on 23rd April 2000. We created one of a kind niche category by changing the whole programming into comedy. Programs like “Office Office” and “Yes Boss” had made waves in the industry.

In 2010, Mastiii was launched with a new concept of comedy and music, which became an instant hit and was positioned number 1 in just a month. We had found a Bhojpuri channel “Dabangg,” Marathi music channel “Maiboli.

We have launched “Governance now” the public policy magazine (now Digital post covid) which has created its own niche and credibility amongst readers.

We’ve also produced and distributed films like “Pyar Ka Punchnama 2”, “Missing,” “Great Grand Masti,” multi-starrer “Total Dhamaal,” and some others on the regional front.

We’ve released our first web film, “Dheet Patangey” premiered on Disney+Hotstar on 2nd March 2020. As our future is digital, we have more movies and web series in our pipeline for various platforms.

With India now entering Unlock 4.0, how do you observe the revival of the Entertainment sector in this?

This COVID-19 pandemic has had enough impact on every media house, and SAB Group is no exception. While April was terrible, having revenues deepened down to 85%, the month of May did comparatively better. From June, the revenue percentage increased but was still relatively backward from the pre-COVID scenario.

We have high hopes for the festive season, but festive revenues are just a temporary boost up. The real analysis will begin from January 2021 onwards. With the unlocking of big metros, and particularly the exact time period of launch of waxing will revive economy. But the same will get slow momentum as it has the past COVID baggage.

What are your thoughts on the impact on the Television Industry amidst OTT’s gaining popularity?

Undeniably, OTT platforms have created its one-of-a-kind category in the industry and are doing so well. We can too watch our favorite channels on OTT platforms anytime and anywhere. Our future is digital, it offers us such stupendous advantages, but traditional Indian families still like to watch TV with their family members in the evening on dinner time. So, Television is here to stay. When I say Television, it means Television Channels comes on TV screen via cable or DTH mode, otherwise TV screen is just a monitor. Still Daily newspapers are not out yet (talking about pre-COVID era), how can TV Channels be out?

We have witnessed significant content consumption during the lockdown period, is there also any paradigm shift to viewership content in India?

As I mentioned earlier, today, movies and web series on OTT platforms have gained stupendous popularity because people love their new and unexplored content. Web series has created one-of-a-kind categories amongst the youth in the entertainment industry. And this lockdown brought a tremendous change in the industry with more people subscribing to OTT platforms for watching films and web series of varied genres. It is undoubtedly a new trend, not going to fade. The television industry, on the other hand, took one step backwards. It started broadcasting old TV shows to arouse the feeling of nostalgia in the minds of the viewers. We love to watch the acceptable ancient Ramayana on the TV after years as it makes us nostalgic and reminds us of our childhood. Several other channels had also started broadcasting old daily soaps which were once so immensely popular among the viewers. Undoubtedly, television has also succeeded in engaging the viewers in its way.

What does the future roadmap look like for SAB Group? What would be your key focus areas for growth?

Like I always say, that SAB Group will forever remain as a core media conglomerate. We can’t deny that digital is our future. Keeping this in mind, we shall be mostly focused on creating exciting content for digital. SAB Group would like to grow in our present horizons, and the sky’s the limit for creativity.

Social Distancing Globally Won't Help Combat COVID-19; World Needs Multilateralism: UNGA Prez

Social distancing at the global level will not help as no country could combat COVID-19 alone, President of the UN General Assembly's 75th session Volkan Bozkir has said, asserting that multilateralism is the panacea to all the problems in the world. United Nations: Social distancing at the global level will not help as no country could combat COVID-19 alone, President of the UN General Assembly’s 75th session Volkan Bozkir has said, asserting that multilateralism is the panacea to all the problems in the world. Bozkir, addressing the UN ambassadors and delegates, said that since the beginning of the crisis earlier this year, critics of multilateralism have become more vocal and the pandemic has been used to justify unilateral steps and weaken the rules-based international system.

“In the past six months, our plans for the 75th year of the United Nations have changed. Today, we have other urgent priorities. Our masks remind us of the very serious threat we face They remind us we are in this together, Bozkir said as the 75th session of the General Assembly commenced on Tuesday. Wearing masks, UN diplomats and envoys sat socially distanced in the iconic General Assembly Hall as the high-level annual session begins in a largely virtual format this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

International organisations have been reproached and the need for international cooperation has been questioned. These criticisms are not baseless but their conclusions are misguided, the veteran Turkish diplomat told the 193-member General Assembly. Giving a clarion call for strengthening multilateralism to combat the pandemic, Bozkir said, Make no mistake: No state can combat this pandemic alone. Social distancing will not help at the international level. Unilateralism will only strengthen the pandemic.

It will move us further away from our shared goal. At this time of crisis, it is our responsibility to strengthen people’s faith in multilateral cooperation and international institutions, with the UN at their center. Later, addressing the UN correspondents at a press briefing, Bozkir said that multilateralism is the panacea to all the problems of the world.

Multilateralism can best be implemented in the United Nations platform, he said. Responding to a question on whether he thinks the UN can survive a second term of US President Donald Trump, who has been very critical of its agencies and withdrawn from the UN entities and agreements like the World Health Organization and the Paris climate accord, he said if the UN shows to the world that it is doing its job in a strong manner and the wind is blowing from all the world behind to the UN, then I don’t think any country or any person can think of abolishing this institution or lessening its strength.

Personally, I don’t have any concern about it. I have full trust that the United Nations is irreplaceable and it will be with us for another 75 years, he said. Bozkir said that there is a need to continue a frank, transparent and results-oriented dialogue about what went wrong in our efforts to contain the virus and what we have to do to avoid a similar situation in the future.

He stressed that the international community will also need to ask and answer questions about how COVID-19 vaccines can be distributed fairly and equitably. This is not just a question of health and economics, but of ethics in the most profound way. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, addressing the opening of the 75th session of the General Assembly, said in the landmark year of the world organisation, it is clear that the world has high expectations of us, as the main platform for multilateralism and cooperation on a rules-based international system.

The nature of multilateralism is changing and I have frequently pointed to the need for a more networked and inclusive multilateralism for the 21st century, Guterres said, welcoming Bozkir’s pledge to work towards consolidating trust and cohesion among UN member states, major groups of countries and other international organisations. These efforts are essential to the unity and solidarity we need in this next crucial year, as we respond to the pandemic, build a strong recovery and implement the Sustainable Development Goals, Guterres said.

For the first time in the 75-year history of the United Nations, state heads and government, ministers and diplomats from 193-UN member states will not be gathering in New York for the high-level UNGA week due to the coronavirus pandemic. World leaders will send pre-recorded video statements in advance to the UN for the largely virtual General Debate as well as other virtual summits planned during the session, including the high-level meetings to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the UN.

Bozkir added that during the 75th Session, a Special Session will be convened to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and a second one against corruption.
