Arts scholar Kapila Vatsyayan passes away

Leading art and dance scholar Kapila Vatsyayan passed away in New Delhi on Wednesday. She was 92-years old.

Dr. Vatsyayan was a former member of Parliament and life time trustee of India International Centre (IIC). She died due to old age complications, an IIC official said.

Dr. Vatsyayan, the grand matriarch of cultural research, has for decades been an icon for students of the arts and for aesthetes in general.

Among India’s earliest arts administrators, hers is a rare personality — unique even today — that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, artistic priorities with administrative acumen.

Dr. Vatsyayan was a living record on Indian dance from the 1930-40s which was the watershed decade of the creation of dance institutions.

She has held several posts in the Government of India, in leading institutions such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, and occupied positions of significance in India’s representations to UNESCO.

She was not only a dance scholar and art historian, but also was also highly trained in Kathak and Manipuri in her youth, besides accumulating a formidable amount of knowledge of Bharatanatyam and Odissi among other dance forms.

US Company Accepts Bitcoin Payments for Luxury Planes, as $40M Gulfstream Jet Goes on Sale | News Bitcoin News

US Company Accepts Bitcoin Payments for Luxury Planes, as $40M Gulfstream Jet Goes on Sale

Aviatrade Inc., a New Jersey-based aircraft sales company, is now accepting bitcoin as a means of payment for its range of multi-million dollar luxury jets.

Philip Rushton, president of Aviatrade, told news.Bitcoin.com that the first plane available for purchase via cryptocurrency is a six-year-old Gulfstream G650ER, which went on sale a couple of weeks ago.

The private jet, Gulfstream’s existing flagship, is selling for $40 million. Billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are some of the noteworthy owners of this plane model, reports note.

Rushton revealed that cash-based sales for expensive luxury aircraft are subject to stringent governmental restrictions, but bitcoin, in its generic form, presented a way around this. He hopes that such characteristics could be useful in attracting high-end, international buyers.

“The reason we are doing it (accepting BTC payments) is because there are countries such as Brazil, Saudi Arabia, anywhere in Asia, especially China…that don’t have easily accessible currency and they have cross-border currency transfer issues,” said Rushton, by telephone. He added:

We see this blockade. There are ways to bring money out of China but it’s not always easy and, of course, the buyers of these aircraft don’t want to be transparent. So we can move the money out via bitcoin….We are aware that last year alone China spent $54 billion of BTC buying assets – apartment buildings, boats, houses etc – we are jumping onto that bandwagon and offering the same opportunity for buyers of these jets at the high end.

Aviatrade, which started trading aircraft in the 1980s mostly through barter, will not directly receive the crypto from a buyer. The firm is working with an unnamed bitcoin payment services provider who converts the digital assets into cash. According to Rushton, Aviatrade is the “key to valuing the aircraft, providing the selling process, and interacting with the bitcoin payment provider.”

“We don’t trade bitcoin for bitcoin, or ethereum for ethereum,” he explained. “We actually interact with the bitcoin payment provider who will eventually produce fiat into an escrow account on behalf of the buyer and seller. The buyer puts it in, the seller sees cash come out and the bitcoin payment provider takes their fee and we are compensated by either buyer or seller.”

The G650ER is the largest aircraft currently in service by U.S. manufacturer Gulfstream. With a 7,500 nautical mile range, the plane is also the company’s long-haul leader, a favourite with intercontinental flyers keen to avoid refuelling stops.

Business Insider reported that the plane “has spent time in New Zealand and Asia but is now returning to its birthplace at Gulfstream’s headquarters as it undergoes routine inspections and awaits a new owner.” The private jet can accommodate 14 passengers.

Google Grilled on Ad Business Dominance by US Senate Panel

Google made a series of purchases, including DoubleClick and AdMob, to help make it the dominant player

    Highlights
    • Advertisers' complained Google was opaque about where ad dollars went
    • Trump's Justice Department expected to a file lawsuit against Google
    • Google executive argued that the companies involved had violated policies

Alphabet's Google faced a bipartisan buzzsaw of tough questions about its ad business in a hearing on Tuesday, with a particular focus on whether it misused its dominance in online advertising to drive profits.

Senator Mike Lee, a Republican and chair of the US Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust panel, pressed Google's Don Harrison, who testified remotely, on the company's dominance of the interlocking businesses which connect advertisers with newspapers, websites and other firms looking to host them.

"As that business has grown, so too have complaints that Google - which both operates the ad selling and buying platforms, and sells its own inventory through those platforms -has conflicts of interest and has manipulated or rigged online ad technologies and auctions to favor its own interest," Lee said.

He and others pressed Harrison on advertiser complaints that Google was opaque about where ad dollars went, specifically how much went to publishers and how much to Google.

Harrison, who took over as head of Google's corporate development in 2012, argued that the ad tech ecosystem was crowded and competitive, with Amazon and Facebook, AT&T, Comcast and others among Google's powerful rivals, and that the price of placing an ad had fallen.

The tech giant made a series of purchases, including DoubleClick and AdMob, to help make it the dominant player in online advertising.

Lee's concern was echoed by fellow Republicans like Senator Josh Hawley as well as Democrats, such as Senators Amy Klobuchar, the top Democrat on the panel, and Richard Blumenthal.

The hearing was held as President Donald Trump's Justice Department is expected to file a lawsuit against Google within weeks, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Blumenthal called the task of defending Google "thankless" because of the many roles it plays between buyer and sellers in online advertising.

"(It) seems unacceptable in a really free market and in a free enterprise system which is why I hope there will be antitrust enforcement directed against Google," he said.

Klobuchar, whose father was a journalist, expressed concern that newspapers did not receive adequate revenues from advertisements placed on their websites because of Google's dominance.

"I literally don't have personal grudges against these companies, like sometimes the president has expressed about various companies. I don't," she said. "I just want our capitalist system to work."

While conservative bias is not covered by antitrust law, Senator Lee, backed by Hawley, questioned Harrison about Google's threat to drop a conservative publication from its advertising and bar some conservative commentators from making money on Google's YouTube.

Google's Harrison said the companies involved had violated policies, such as those against placing advertising next to racist or similar content.

Apple Watch Series 6 vs Apple Watch SE: Price in India, Features Compared

Apple Watch Series 6 (left) and Apple Watch SE come in 40mm and 44mm case sizes

    Highlights
    • Apple Watch Series 6 has launched in titanium, stainless steel option
    • Apple Watch SE is made from 100 percent recycled aluminium
    • Both the wearables offer 50m water resistance

Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE have launched as two new wearable offerings from the Cupertino, California-based giant. The Apple Watch Series 6 is the flagship model for this year with an Always-On Retina display, a blood oxygen monitor, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) measuring functionality. The Apple Watch SE – an affordable model – lacks the ECG and blood oxygen monitor, and does not offer an Always-On display either. Both the smartwatches come in 40mm and 44mm case sizes, and GPS and GPS + cellular versions. Read on to find out exactly what is different between Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE.

Apple Watch Series 6 vs Apple Watch SE price

The new Apple Watch Series 6  is priced starting at Rs. 40,900 for the GPS model in India, while the Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular) option will retail starting at Rs. 49,900. Availability for the Indian market has not been announced.

Apple Watch SE GPS model is priced starting at Rs. 29,900 and Apple Watch SE (GPS + Cellular) starts at Rs. 33,900. India availability has not yet been detailed beyond "coming soon".

Apple Watch Series 6 vs Apple Watch SE specifications

The Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE come in 40mm and 44mm case sizes. The 44mm smartwatch has a 368x448 pixels resolution whereas the 40mm watch has a 324x398 pixels resolution. The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display with 1,000nits brightness. The Apple Watch SE does not offer the Always-On display functionality.

There is a 64-bit S6 dual-core processor inside the Apple Watch Series 6 that is touted to be up to 20 percent faster than the S5 processor. The flagship watch has an Apple W3 wireless chip and a U1 ultra-wideband chip as well. The Apple Watch SE, on the other hand, is powered by the old S5 dual-core processor and has Apple W3 wireless chip.

Possibly the biggest difference is that the Apple Watch Series 6 has a blood oxygen monitoring support and an ECG monitor, whereas the Apple Watch SE lacks these functionalities. Apple Watch Series 6 comes in aluminium, stainless steel, and titanium watch cases; whereas the Apple Watch SE is made using 100 percent recycled aluminium only. Both the wearables come with varied sensors like GPS/GNSS, compass, always-on altimeter, second-gen optical heart rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and ambient light sensor.

Both the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE have 32GB storage capacity, support Apple Pay and GymKit, and have a ceramic and sapphire crystal back. There is a microphone and speaker on board for enabling calls. Safety features include Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, fall detection, and noise monitoring. The Apple Watch Series 6 supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz, whereas the Apple Watch SE supports just 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. Both the watches support Bluetooth v5.0 for connectivity and are touted to last for up to 18 hours. The Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE use a magnetic charging cable.

Supreme Court Grants Relief To Vedanta, Videocon In Ravva Oil Field Case

In a major setback to the central government and big relief to Vedanta Ltd. and Videocon, the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a foreign arbitration award to recover $499 million, instead of $198 million capped by the Centre for Development of Ravva Oil and Gas fields off the Andhra Coast between 2000 and 2007.

The top court upheld Delhi High Court's order which refused to interfere with the arbitral award in production sharing contract (PSC) for Ravva oil fields in the Krishna Godavari basin. Vedanta (formerly Cairn India) and Videocon had entered into PSC for Ravva oil fields and as per the contract Vedanta and Videocon was allowed to recover $198 million. However, the government claimed that it had recovered $499 million.

Following the conflict between government and Vedanta, they entered into arbitration in Malaysia which favoured Vedanta. In July 2014, the Malaysian Court of Appeals upheld the arbitral award allowing additional recoveries to Vedanta.

After Delhi High Court refused to interfere with the arbitral award in favour of Vedanta, the centre moved the top court in June.

The Supreme Court in today's ruling said that Malaysian court rightly examined Ravva oil field arbitration award and arbitral award doesn't offend public policy of India as it is a subsequent event.

The top court added that enforcement court can't reassess evidence available.
