NEW DELHI: As India's coronavirus case tally topped 50 lakh on Wednesday, the Congress asked the government to tell the nation how the pandemic will be controlled and if it will blame god to evade accountability.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also compared the battle against COVID-19 to the Mahabharata.

"Mahabharata of coronavirus pandemic is on, but the Modi government is missing," he alleged.

The total number of coronavirus cases mounted to 50,20,359, just 11 days after it crossed 40 lakh, while the death toll climbed to 82,066 with 1,290 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours, according to Union Health Ministry data on Wednesday.

In a series of tweets in Hindi, Surjewala asked, "Facts about COVID-19, will the PM answer-: 1.In coronavirus infections per day - India at number 1 in the world (90,123 infections). 2.Coronavirus mortality rate per day - India ranks first in the world (1,290 deaths) 3.Coronavirus infection rate doubling - India at number 1 in the world (double in 31 days) 4.In total coronavirus cases - India ranks second in the world."

He added that India ranks second in the world in terms of active cases (9,95,933 infections), while in terms of deaths it ranks third in the world (82,066 deaths).

Demanding that the government tell the country how the coronavirus pandemic will be controlled, he asked, "Or will the government blame god to evade accountability?" It was an apparent reference to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's 'Act of God' remark while talking about the economy.

Sitharaman had said the economy has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is an ''Act of God'', and it will see a contraction in the current fiscal.

Hitachi Says It Will Quit Stalled British Nuclear Power Project

Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd said on Wednesday it would exit a stalled British nuclear power project, a decision that deals a blow to Britain's plans to replace ageing plants.

TOKYO: Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd said on Wednesday it would exit a stalled British nuclear power project, a decision that deals a blow to Britain’s plans to replace ageing plants.

“Hitachi made this decision given that 20 months have passed since the suspension, and the investment environment has become increasingly severe due to the impact of COVID-19,” the company said in a statement.

Hitachi last year froze the 3 trillion yen ($28 billion) project on the island of Anglesey, in north Wales, and booked a writedown of 300 billion yen on its British nuclear unit as the project failed to find private investors.

Sources at the time said Hitachi had called on the British government to boost financial support for the project.

The project was expected to provide around 6% of Britain’s electricity.

Hitachi said it would coordinate with the British government and relevant organisations regarding the handling of the planned construction sites and other matters.

The decision was not expected to have significant impact on Hitachi’s business results as the company has already written down most of the related assets, the company said.

Hours after Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's former manager Shruti Modi deposed before the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for questioning on Wednesday, she was sent back as one of the officers tested positive for Covid-19. NCB Deputy Director K.P.S. Malhotra in a statement said, "A team member of the NCB SIT tested positive for Covid-19, the antigen test report was just received by NCB."

Malhotra said, in view of that other SIT members, etc., will be also tested as a precaution, and all due protocols laid down will be followed.

"Accordingly, NCB has sent back Shruti Modi, who had joined investigation today morning," he said.

Shruti Modi was summoned on Tuesday by the NCB to join the probe. Besides Shruti Modi, Sushant's talent manager Jaya Saha was also summoned by the agency. The questioning of Shruti Modi is part of the NCB investigation in the wake of a case registered at the request of the Enforcement Directorate.

The NCB has till date arrested over one and half dozen people in connection with the Sushant death case, including Sushant's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, Sushant's house manager Samuel Miranda and several others have been arrested by the NCB.

The NCB has registered a case on the request of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the alleged drug chats of Showik, Miranda and several others came to the fore.

Sushant was found hanging in his Bandra's Mont Blanc apartment on June 14.

Besides the CBI and the ED, NCB is the third agency to probe into the death case of Sushant.

Meanwhile, in a significant development, the names of Bollywood celebrities like Sara Ali Khan, Rakul Preet Singh and Simone Khambatta have apparently emerged in the NCB probe into the drugs angle surrounding the mysterious death of Sushant, official sources said.
