Nizamsagar yet to receive good inflows

NIZAMABAD: Due to heavy rains, several projects and reservoirs in the districts have been receiving plenty of inflows for the past few days. However, the Nizamsagar dam has received only minor inflows. 

The dam’s total capacity had been 29 TMC, which reduced to 17.802 TMC due to silt. According to officials, the dam has received good inflows only two times from 2009.“As of now, we received only 1,200 cusecs of water from recent rains. We are waiting for more inflows till the end of the monsoon,” Nizamsagar Project Deputy Executive Engineer Dattatri said. 

In 2010-11 Nizamsagar received 59.57 TMC of water. In 2016-17, it received 76.347 TMC inflows and excess water was released into the river. In 2011-12, it received 8 TMC and in 2017-18 it received only 7 TMC.

The government had planned to bring water from the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) and Kondapochamma reservoir into the project, but it never materialised. Assembly speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy haNIZAMABAD:s been closely monitoring the situation.

The BBA department of SS Dempo College of Commerce and Economics organised a certified five-day global immersion programme in association with Edu 180 to Dubai, UAE, prior to the lockdown. The objective of this programme was to provide students with the opportunity to experience an international business environment.

During the span of this programme, students visited the Curtin University Dubai campus at the Dubai International Academic City, the Apple store, the Global Village and the Dubai International Financial Centre.

Learnings at the Apple store included use of latest techniques and technology provided by Apple such as the ‘Jump-Cut’ and ‘Flip’ applications. With regard to the visit to the university, students were engaged in conducting a survey of the customers who visited the Dubai Mall to list out the findings with regards to ‘brand promotion’ and ‘marketing strategies’ used by Dubai in portraying itself as an attractive travel and leisure destination. Findings of this survey were later presented at a session with the Dean of The Curtin Univesity, Khyati Shetty. This was followed by talk on ‘Current Global Management Practices’ delivered by NidhiSehgal from Curtin University. At the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the students were enlightened on the concept of ‘Fintech’ (Finance Technology) and its impact on the Future of Finance.

Apart from this, the students visited the Global Village, the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall thereby witnessing the architectural and cultural excellence of Dubai. They experienced the Desert Safari, a visit around the city of Dubai in addition to the academic quotient of the field
trip.

RESERVATION in education, employment and promotion is definitely a very retrograde step as well-qualified candidates are forced to make a way for less qualified and less talented people. Quality takes a beating, very often, rendering great injustice to the well-deserving candidates who miss the bus because of the quota system. Social justice would be much better served if irrespective of demographic credentials, students from the underprivileged backgrounds get free education, coaching and books. But thereafter admission to universities or offers of employment should be based on sheer merit. However, the real picture is absolutely different: more and more communities are demanding reservation. And various political parties and governments are also championing the reservation system with renewed zeal. Any aggrieved person holds every right to protest against reservation through peaceful civilised means on the basis of principles, but targeting the beneficiaries is simply not done. It must be remembered that candidates from the reserved categories have not framed the laws. The reservation policy was introduced by the government; people belonging to the reserved categories merely avail the facility in absolutely legal path. So the principled fight against the reservation policy should not ‘inspire’ anybody to spew venom against the beneficiaries. Moreover there is no reason to believe that the beneficiaries are generally inefficient. As a matter of fact, I have closely seen how many employees coming from the reserved categories work much more efficiently, assiduously and sincerely than many of their counterparts from the general category! So though the reservation policy is undesirable as many eligible candidates lose out in the bargain, but it must also be admitted that intelligence or quality is not the sole monopoly of the people belonging to upper castes. In this context, the vilification of Maroona Murmu, associate professor in history at   the Jadavpur University, is highly condemnable. Students have every right to post their opinion in the social media against reservation, but they hold absolutely no right to indulge in personal attack by invoking her tribal background and questioning her intellectual credentials in most barbaric manner.
