The Mumbai police on Wednesday stepped up security outside superstar Amitabh Bachchan's home in the city as a precaution, a day after Samajwadi Party MP and veteran actor Jaya Bachchan's remarks in the Parliament over drugs row.

Mumbai police said that additional security has been provided outside Jalsa, Bachchans’ residence in Juhu

Amid a raging controversy over drug use in the film industry in connection with a probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Jaya Bachchan, a four-time Rajya Sabha MP, on Tuesday slammed all those who have been calling the Mumbai-based entertainment industry a "gutter".

"Entertainment industry provides 5 lakh employment everyday and indirectly provides livelihood to five million people. At a time when the situation is depressing and employment is at its worst level, in order to divert people's attention, we are being flogged by social media," she said, adding that all this was because the government was not coming out in support of the industry.

"The people who made their names in the industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree. I really dissociate myself and I hope that the government tells these people who have made their earning and name and fame in the industry to stop using such language," she said, without naming anyone.

She said that there are people in the industry, who are the highest tax payers and they are being harassed. "All kind of promises are being made to industry but never kept," she added.

Taking a swipe at actor and BJP MP from Gorakhpur Ravi Kishan, without taking his name, Jaya Bachchan said: "I was really embarrassed and ashamed as a Lok Sabha MP spoke against industry."

"Jis thaali me khate hai, usi me ched karte hai," she said in Hindi in a dig at the actor, literally meaning destroying the goose that lays the golden egg.

Since her remarks in the Parliament, the Bachchan family is being trolled by netizens. Since Tuesday morning, the keyword "Bachchans" started trending on Twitter along with #JayaBachchan, Jaya Ji, gutter and #istandwithravikishan as netizens slammed the veteran actress along with the rest of her family, for remaining silent on major issues like Palghar Sadhus lynching and Sushant Singh Rajput's death among others.

They also interpreted Jaya Bachchan's Rajya Sabha speech as an attempt to protect drug addicts of the film industry.

Kangana Ranaut and several other actors have opened up over the use of drugs in Bollywood. Amid the drug controversy, Ranaut has compared Mumbai to POK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir). The BrihanMumbai Corporation has also razed Ranaut's office in Mumbai over illegal construction leading to fresh war of words between the state government and the actor.

Science mag makes first endorsement in 175 years, taps Biden - Times of India

Science mag makes first endorsement in 175 years, taps Biden

NEW YORK: Even though Scientific American had never endorsed a presidential candidate in the magazine's 175-year history, its top editor said Tuesday there was little internal debate over a decision to back Democrat Joe Biden.
Editor-in-Chief Laura Helmuth said President Donald Trump's administration was much worse for the scientific community than the magazine had feared.
The magazine's endorsement was posted online Tuesday, a day after Trump questioned the science of climate change in relation to the California wildfires.
Helmuth said the timing was coincidental and the editorial was written during the past two months.
Scientific American said that “the evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has basically damaged the United States and its people because he rejects evidence and science.”
The editorial by senior editor Josh Fischman sharply condemned Trump for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The magazine criticised Trump for seeking cutbacks in scientific funding and hobbling the US response to climate change.
Biden, the magazine said, “has a record of following the data and being guided by science.” There was no immediate reply to a request for comment from the Trump campaign.
There's been some pushback. Helmuth said the magazine has been monitoring requests for canceled subscriptions and has received some — many from people who weren't subscribers, anyway.
Conservative columnist SE Cupp tweeted that while she agreed with the magazine's arguments and planned to vote for Biden, “I do have mixed feelings on whether this is a good use of scientific clout and credibility.” University of New Mexico psychology professor and author Geoffrey Miller said that the magazine was betraying 175 years of principled bipartisanship “for the sake of some cheap, short-sighted, opportunistic virtue signaling.”
“I'm old enough to remember when your magazine had some integrity,” he tweeted.
But Helmuth said the magazine has not ignored politics; the Atomic Energy Commission burned 3,000 copies of an issue in the 1950s because of its stance against the hydrogen bomb.
The magazine has been running more opinion pieces lately, and, in 2016, wrote an editorial questioning Trump's fitness to be president, although it didn't endorse Hillary Clinton.
“Part of our magazine's mission is to show people how the world works – whether it's black holes, evolution, viruses, or systemic racism,” Helmuth said.
“We felt it was our duty as part of that mission to warn people that Trump has been disastrous for research, science, health and the environment.”
The magazine hopes it doesn't have to make a presidential endorsement again, she said.
On Monday, Trump was confronted during the California briefing about a need to address climate change, and he said that the Earth would get cooler.
“I wish science agreed with you,” responded Wade Crowfoot, secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency.
“Well, I don't think science knows, actually,” the president said.

    London:

Barbados wants to remove Britain's Queen Elizabeth as its head of state and become a republic, the Caribbean nation's government has said.

A former British colony that gained independence in 1966, Barbados has maintained a formal link with the British monarchy as have some other countries that were once part of the British empire.

"The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind," said Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason, delivering a speech on behalf of the country's Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

"Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving. Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence."

That anniversary will come in November of next year.
