AMU: Prof Mohd Zaheer passes away

Professor Mohd Zaheer, a veteran academic of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) passed away after a brief illness at his Aligarh residence. He was 87.

“Prof Zaheer was my teacher and this is a big loss for me at the personal level,” said the AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor.

He added: “The AMU community is deeply saddened and disturbed by the sudden demise of Prof Zaheer, who taught generations of students and is a teacher of scores of teachers. May his soul rest in peace”.

The Vice Chancellor visited Prof Zaheer’s residence to extend condolences, said the deceased’s son, Prof Mohammad Shoaib Zaheer, Department of Medicine.

“Prof Zaheer remained associated with the University for his entire life and even after retirement, he continued to mentor and guide students,” said Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqui, JNMC Principal.

Prof Zaheer’s students regard him as a loving and kind teacher who trained generations through his knowledgeable and thought-provoking lectures and expertise, said Prof Najam Khalique (Officiating Chairman, Department of Community Medicine).

Prof Zaheer served AMU in various capacities including the officiating Vice Chancellor; Dean, Faculty of Medicine; JNMC Principal; Chief Medical Superintendent and Chairman, Department of Community Medicine for five different tenures spanning around 17 years. He joined JNMC as a Reader in 1964 and was appointed on the position of a Professor in 1969. He superannuated in 1994.

The deceased will be laid to rest in the University graveyard. He is survived by son Prof Mohammad Shoaib Zaheer.
