CHENNAI: More than 35,000 people have joined the DMK within 24 hours of party president M K Stalin launching the ‘Ellorum Nammudan’ (everyone is with us) online membership drive.
Stalin launched the drive on Tuesday to mark the birth anniversary of former chief minister C N Annadurai.
Party youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin said, “Ellorum Nammudan aims at giving power to everyone, who wishes to become a party member. The pandemic has reduced our chances of interacting with people. We believe that Ellorum Nammudan will help us communicate with the people.”
He added that the drive would bring all like-minded people together to tackle issues pertaining to education and access to healthcare. He urged youngsters to join the party.
A statement from the party said the campaign aims at enrolling at least 25 lakh new members in the next 45 days. Candidates above 18 years of age can become a member of the party by logging on to http://www.dmk.in/joindmk. No membership fee will be charged.
Local party units would verify the details uploaded by the individual to enable them to become a formal member of the party, added the release.
Though the members are joining the party via an online portal, they would be given equal rights as compared to the other members of the party, the statement noted.
The members will be allowed to vote in intra-party polls after verification. They might have to wait for a year to participate in elections. However, if an individual enrols 25 others, he or she will be eligible to participate in elections immediately.
