Efforts on to get World Bank funding for CMWSSB projects

Some significant projects to improve water supply and sewage treatment in the city are likely to get a fillip soon. Technical assessment is under way for projects of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), for which funds have been sought from the World Bank.

The board has sought ₹2,600 crore under the “Chennai City Partnership” programme, a model that focuses on sustainable development of the city. The water board has proposed to execute four projects in the southern suburbs of the city with World Bank funding. These include providing underground drainage network in five added areas of Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and Injambakkam, the officials said.

Funds would be released in a phased manner under the “programme for results” instrument developed by the World Bank. Under this, the release of funds is linked to achieving specific milestones during project implementation.

Another significant project was capacity expansion of tertiary treatment plants at Perungudi and Nesapakkam by up to 110 million litres a day.

Work is in progress to implement the pilot ‘recycle and reuse’ projects to treat and release treated wastewater to recharge waterbodies and indirect potable use of recycled water.

Equitable supply

Chennai gets 700 mld on alternate days. On increasing the water supply, an official said: “We don’t see the need to increase the quantity now. But we are working on improving equal water distribution to all households in an area.”

The water agency has proposed to improve the distribution system in zones X and XIII covering localities such as T. Nagar, Mylapore and Kodambakkam under the demand management plan as a pilot project.

This envisages water supply with adequate pressure to reach the tail-end areas by strengthening and replacing old pipelines.

“We have asked for funds to provide last mile connectivity to households covered with the underground drainage network in added areas,” said the official. The water agency would provide connections without any application and residents can pay the bill later in instalments.

There are plans to execute the “Illanthorum Inaippu” project in areas such as Ullagaram Puzhuthivakkam, Karapakkam, Sholinganallur and Perungudi.

The CMWSSB has identified nearly one lakh sewer connections need to be given in various added areas. The projects were being reviewed now after which disbursement of funds would be decided, the officials added.

The Apple event that's an annual affair every September, has begun. Apple CEO Tim Cook kicked off the virtual press conference from Apple Park, the company's headquarters in California. Cook announced that Apple will be focusing on Apple Watch and iPad during this event, which is the strongest confirmation you'll get about the iPhone 12 series launching a little later this year. Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, iPad 8th Gen, and iPad Air (2020) during this event. The company also unveiled its Apple One subscription bundle service. Apple announced that iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 will be released on September 16.

Apple Watch Series 6

The Apple Watch Series 6 is the first product Apple announced. The headline feature of this product is its ability to measure blood oxygen saturation. It's a measure of how well your cardiovascular system is functioning. If you have the Series 6, you may not need to use a dedicated pulse oximeter.

This is the first Apple Watch to ship with a Product Red edition, which has a red band and Apple contributes a part of the proceeds from sales of Product Red edition products to charities. The Apple Watch Series 6 ships with the S6 processor that's 20% faster than its predecessor.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is more energy efficient than before, and its always-on display is twice as bright as before. It also can measure your elevation in realtime, which will be useful to hikers. There are some new watch faces such as stripes and Memoji faces too.

Apple Watch Series 6 also has a new Solo Loop, which has a single band with no clasp. It's made of silicone and is being launched in seven colours. There's another version of this called Braided Solo Loop. Apple Watch Series 6 price starts at $399 in the US and Rs. 40,900 in India.

Apple Watch SE

Another useful feature is Apple Watch Family Setup, which allows you to pair multiple Apple Watch devices to the same iPhone. This appears to be targeted at children with new features such as automatic location notifications and a school time mode that has restricted interactions with the watch during school time. It requires Apple Watch Series 4 Cellular and later and is not launching in India at the moment.

The Apple Watch Series 3 has become an important product for Apple. It may be a few-years-old, but it still has some nice features such as a built-in GPS, swim tracking, and accurate heart rate tracking. The Apple Watch SE appears to be an upgraded version of the Series 3. It uses the S5 chip for up to two times better performance than Series 3. Cellular models for Apple Watch SE will be available. Apple Watch SE also supports Fall Detection, altimeter, swimproofing, etc. Apple Watch SE has been launched at $279 in the US. The Apple Watch Series 3 will continue to be in the market at $199.

As part of its bid to be more eco friendly, Apple has announced that the Apple Watch will not ship with USB power adapters.

Apple Fitness+

Apple has launched a fitness service called Apple Fitness+, which is targeted at Apple Watch users. Fitness+ allows you to choose workouts from the catalogue of videos that can be played on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. You will be seeing your fitness data on the screen, along with the trainers' videos. You will be able to see your Activity Rings on screen too. This is an example of tight integration between Apple Watch and the screen. The set of workouts on the service appears to be quite diverse and not dependent too much equipment. Apple says its workouts will be refreshed weekly and that you can pick your choice of music while working out. Fitness+ integrates with Apple Music to let you carry over your music.

Apple Fitness+ costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the US. Fitness+ will be available by the end of the year, and you get it free for three months if you buy an Apple Watch in regions that support the service. Fitness+ is not coming to India at launch.

iPad 8th Gen

The iPad 8th Gen was announced at the Apple event. This iPad has the A12 Bionic chip, a Touch ID and a similar form factor as compared to its predecessor. The processor is a big upgrade over the A10 that was powering the older iPad. The A12 Bionic was first seen on the iPhone X series. The iPad 8th Gen also supports Apple's Smart Keyboard cover and Apple Pencil.

The iPad 8th Gen price is $329 in the US.

iPad Air (2020)

The iPad Air (2020) was also launched during this event. This iPad has a redesigned body with flat borders that allows it to support the second-generation Apple Pencil. This iPad has a single rear camera and a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina Display. One big feature here appears to be the integration of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor into the power button on the iPad Air (2020). The iPad Air (2020) has the new A14 Bionic chip, which is expected to ship with the iPhone 12 series too. Apple says the A14 is based on the 5nm process technology, which is an industry first according to the company. Apple says the iPad Air (2020) offers 40% better CPU performance and 30% better graphics performance than the iPad Air (2019).

The iPad Air (2020) also gets more iPad Pro features such as support for Magic Keyboard, USB-C, better camera performance, and faster LTE performance too. iPad Air (2020) price starts at $599.

Apple One

Services contribute a significant portion to Apple's revenue and it's easy to see why. The company sells Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+ and iCloud and that adds up to a big sum for those who need all of these services. This is the problem that the rumoured Apple One subscription bundle is expected to solve. Apple One has been priced at $15 per month for Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50GB iCloud. There's a family plan too at $20 per month with 200GB iCloud. There's a Premier plan for Apple One with Apple News+ and Apple Fitness+ at $30 per month and 2TB iCloud storage, which will be available only in regions that have all Apple services.

Delhi High Court Puts On Hold Army Couple's Posting To Two Different Locations

Colonel Amit Kumar and his wife have been posted to Port Blair and Bhatinda respectively.

Delhi High Court Puts On Hold Army Couple's Posting To Two Different Locations

Delhi High Court said the matter will be taken up for hearing in four weeks

New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court today put on hold the Army's decision to post two of its senior officers, a married couple, to different parts of the country.

The decision by a bench of Justices Rajiv Sahai Endlaw and Asha Menon came on a plea moved by the husband -- Colonel Amit Kumar -- challenging the May 15 posting order issued by the Military Secretary Branch, his lawyer said.

Senior advocate Rana Mukherjee and advocate Sunil J Mathews appeared for Col Kumar.

Mr Mathews said that the court has asked the Army to consider the plea as a representation and to take a decision on the couple's plea for a posting at the same or geographically close location.

The high court also asked the Army to inform it about the decision on the representation after four weeks when the matter will be taken up, he said.

He also said that till the next date, the bench put on hold the May 15 orders posting Col Kumar and his wife Col Anu Dogra, both of whom are in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch of the Army and presently posted in Jodhpur, to Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Bhatinda in Punjab respectively.

Central government standing counsel Harish Vaidyanathan said he opposed the plea moved by Col Kumar.

Col Kumar, in his plea filed through advocates Ashim Dua and Tasmin Singh, has said that he had requested the Army in August for reconsideration of his date of movement and also leave of 30 days to attend the "piping ceremony of his wife", and secure the relocation of his family, which included his aged parents and minor son, to Bhatinda.

However, his requests were denied, the petition has said and added that the decision taken to transfer them without considering their preferences was in violation of the laid down policy and standard operating procedure regarding posting of senior officers.

His petition has alleged that the decision to transfer him and his wife to far off locations has been taken as he had filed a statutory complaint against the JAG, Indian Army as well as Deputy JAG, Headquarters Southern Command, Pune.

He has contended that the two senior officers allegedly influenced the said posting orders.

Col Kumar, in his petition, has said that since his requests were denied he has been forced to put up his papers for voluntary premature retirement "despite an unblemished and stellar service".

Islamabad:

A senior Pakistani journalist was on Tuesday charged by the police for allegedly defaming the country and its powerful Army on social media.

The First Information Report (FIR) against Asad Toor, a senior journalist with the Express Tribune, was registered in Rawalpindi after the complainant Hafiz Ehtesham Ahmed alleged that the scribe used social media to defame Pakistan and the Pakistan Army.

"The complainant claimed that he was a regular user of social media and found that Toor for some days had been defaming the army by using the derogatory language for high-level government institutions, including the Pakistan Army which is a grave crime as per the law," according to the FIR shared by the journalist on his Twitter account.

Asad Toor, who is based in Islamabad, called the accusation a sad moment for him.

"This is a sad development for me being a journalist because I never wished to be news myself," he said.

Asad Toor is not alone in Pakistan where a journalist has been charged or arrested for allegedly defaming the country and its powerful Army.

On September 11, Bilal Farooqi, who works with The Express Tribune, was taken into custody from his home for allegedly defaming the country's army and fanning sectarian hate.
