NAGAPATTINAM: The Velankanni police late on Sunday arrested a woman and a man on charges of clobbering her three-year-old daughter to death.
According to police, the accused, identified as Ramadoss, 30, a native of Sengam Arasamara Street in Thiruvannamalai, and M Ezhilarasi, 28, a resident of Paramakudi Kiriyur in Ramanathapuram district, had brought Manushree to the government hospital in Nagapattinam on September 10, where doctors declared her brought dead.
According to police, Ramadoss, driver of a paddy harvester machine, had befriended Ezhilarasi, through social media a few months ago.
Saw child as an obstacle for being intimate
After the death of her husband Mahendran a few years ago, Ezhilarasi was staying with her five-year-old son and daughter Manushree along with her parents in Paramakudi Kiliyur.
Ezhilarasi and Ramadoss decided to meet at Velankanni and arrived on September 10. Ezhilarasi had brought her daughter with her. Police said the two had booked a room at a hotel. As the couple felt the girl was becoming a hindrance to their intimacy, Ramadoss assaulted the child, following which she collapsed. They took her to a private hospital, where the doctors referred them to the government hospital after first aid, police said.
Based on a complaint by a village administrative officer, the Velankanni police registered a case and arrested them near the arch of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health on Sunday evening.
