CBSE revaluation result mystery: Pass in a failed subject, fail in passed
Central Board of Secondary EducationNEW DELHI: A student of a government-aided school who appeared for the Central Board of Secondary Education exams is in a fix. In the results declared on July 13, Yogesh of Gopal Dass Soni DAV Senior Secondary School was awarded a compartment in physical education but passed his other papers. Upon applying for re-evaluation, 5 marks were added to the failed subject. To his surprise, however, the results now showed a compartment in English.
The humanities student has been running from pillar to post with little to show for it. Importantly, he is likely to miss out on college enrolment. “Because I felt I couldn’t have done so badly in physical education, I paid Rs 500 for the re-evaluation application. CBSE informed me about the marks revision and I was happy that I could now apply for admission in college,” Yogesh told TOI.
In the process of applying at Indira Gandhi National Open University, Yogesh logged into the CBSE website to get his marksheet. “I was shocked to find that I now had a compartmental result in English. My school told me it had to be a technical issue, so I decided to wait,” Yogesh said. “The hardcopy of the mark sheet with my school shows I have passed in English, but even after numerous checks my online result sheet is still showing a compartment in English.”
The student originally scored 26 in his English theory and 17 in practical for a total of 43, when a minimum of 26 in theory is required for a pass. In physical education, he had 18 in theory and 28 in practical against a minimum requirement of 23 in theory. The minimum in both sections plus an aggregate of 33% are required for a pass in a particular subject.
Following the re-evaluation, Yogesh’s English theory marks stand at 24 and practical at 17. His physical education theory mark has increased to 23 in theory and 28 in practical. When he asked CBSE, he was sent from the regional office to the headquarters without his problem being resolved. “A board official said it was a difficult matter,” Yogesh said.
“Thinking I would have to sit for a compartmental exam for physical education, I submitted the fee of Rs300. But the deadline for filling in forms for the exams is over so I can’t sit for the English compartment test,” said a dismayed Yogesh. “Candidates have already got their admit cards, but I am stuck.” The exams begin on September 22.
Officials at CBSE could not be reached for a comment, but with college admissions to begin soon, education activist and advocate Ashok Agarwal will approach Delhi High Court against the board.
