New regional airline FlyBig to start operations in NE after mid-November

PTI Guwahati | Updated on September 15, 2020 Published on September 15, 2020

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Tuesday said the new regional airline ‘FlyBig’ will commence operations in the North-East after mid-November and would fly on three routes initially.

‘FlyBig’ will focus its routes on UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik), the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme, and is planning to concentrate its services on the North East.

“FlyBig is expected to be operational after mid-November. However, some new routes may also be made operational by the end of this year or (early) next year,” AAI officiating Regional Executive Director (North East), J. T. Radhakrishna said.

The routes, which are likely to operate initially, are Guwahati-Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh), Guwahati-Tezu (Arunachal Pradesh)-Imphal and Tezpur (Assam)-Lengpui (Mizoram), AAI said in a statement.

The Guwahati-Rupsi-Kolkota route is planned after Rupsi Airport in Assam opens for flight operations, it added.

AAI said all the sectors will be operated with the ATR-72 type aircraft, which has a seating capacity of 42 to 80, which is suited for regional connectivity and smaller airports, the release said.

Radhakrishna said smaller aircraft are the future of the UDAN programme and as far as the North-East was concerned, more routes are expected to be opened for regional connectivity.

“On the occasion, we welcome new airline FLyBig in the region and expect daily services here,” he added.

Of 78 routes identified by the Ministry of Civil Aviation under the UDAN 4.0 programme, the North-East has got 40.

Married soldier's wife breaks down in court as he's found guilty of trying to persuade a nurse to 'help' him provide sperm samples

  • Captain William Howieson was stationed at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea
  • He gave a doctor's note to a PNG army nurse saying he needed sperm samples
  • The nurse said she refused the 29-year-old's apparent attempt to touch his penis
  • Captain Howieson's wife Bronte Millman, a Townsville vet, cried in court

The wife of an Australian Defence Force soldier sobbed in court as he was found guilty of trying to trick a nurse into 'assisting' him provide a sperm sample.

Captain William Howieson was stationed at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea in 2018 when he gave an unsigned doctor's note to a PNG army nurse saying she needed to help him produce five sperm samples.

While giving evidence at an ADF Court Martial in Canberra, the nurse said she refused the 29-year-old's proposition.

She handed Captain Howieson a specimen jar and took him to a cubicle before telling him: 'You need to go and masturbate yourself in there', the court heard.

The nurse said he then told her 'but the paper says that you need to assist'.

The jury on Tuesday found beyond a reasonable doubt that Captain Howieson brought discredit on the ADF.

Captain Howieson's wife Bronte Millman - a vet from from Townsville - cried in court as the verdict was delivered, the Townsville Bulletin reported.

During the trial the nurse also alleged Captain Howieson told her he had a lump in his groin and asked her to examine it in private.

She told the court martial there was no lump, and said he pulled down his pants.

However, the court found Captain Howieson not guilty of those allegations, the ABC reported.

Defence Force Magistrate Brigadier Michael Cowen QC told the panel it might conclude Captain Howieson's offending had 'a rather brazen element to it'.

He said Captain Howieson, who previously had a perfect service record, was a 'mature man who doesn't have the folly of youth on his side'.

Prosecutors told the court it was clear the act had been premeditated.

Chief Judge Advocate Brigadier Michael Cowan said Captain Howieson's role as a liaison officer and responsibility of controlling a large amount of money gave him confidence in his position.

'You may think that that confidence emboldened him to commit the offence,' he said.

Captain Howieson faces a maximum sentence of three months behind bars, or a fine and demotion.

He will be sentenced later this week.

India China border news: Amid tensions at LAC, Army prepares for long winter in Ladakh | India News - Times of India

Amid tensions at LAC, Army prepares for long winter in Ladakh

LEH: From heating appliances and climate appropriate clothing to rations, fuel and tents that protect from the biting cold, all necessary supplies have reached the forward areas for the Army to gear up for the long, freezing winter in Ladakh region, officials asserted amid the tensions on the Line of Actual Control.
The Ladakh region witnesses sub-zero temperatures and is mostly cut off from the rest of the country for months during the winters. As tensions between the armies of India and China at the LAC show no sign of ebbing, both sides have significantly ramped up the presence of their troops.
LAC stand-off complete coverage
Accordingly, India's Army has been beefing up its stocks of food, ammunition, fuel and more importantly the winter gear.

Major General Arvind Kapoor, Chief of Staff of the Fire and Fury Corps --- also known as the XIV Corps which has the mandate of securing the frontiers along the China and Pakistan borders from Kargil to Ladakh --- said the unit takes pride in its advance winter stocking.
Our stocking levels, be it rations, fuel, oils and lubricants, tentage and heating appliances which includes bukhari (heaters) or kero-heaters, or be it ammunition, are in good numbers," Kapoor told reporters here.

Wherever these things need to be supplied, they have already been supplied. We are confident that the system has become so well-oiled that in the coming days, it will give an excellent result, he said.
Kapoor said the entire Ladakh region has been connected to two main highways -- the Manali-Leh axis and the Jammu-Srinagar-Leh axis.
These axes are shut for nearly six months. But in the last few months, we have brought this down to 120 days. In the coming days, the Atal Tunnel will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Darcha-Nimu-Padam link is also ready and in the immediate future, the Ladakh region will get round-the-year connectivity, he said.
Fuel also plays a critical role for the armed forces, especially in the Ladakh region where it is used by soldiers in forward areas to keep themselves warm in low temperatures.
The corps also operates one of the highest altitude fuel, oil and lubricants depot.
We supply fuel both for our vehicles as also for our men, for the bukharis to keep them warm in the bitterly cold weather on the frontline, said Brigadier Rakesh Manocha, in-charge of the logistics.
On tentage, officials said the indigenously developed Arctic tents can sustain temperatures up to minus 20 degrees, while the high-altitude tents have the capacity to sustain temperatures anywhere between minus 40 to minus 50 degrees.
Both tentages and adequate winter clothing have also been supplied to the forward areas, an official said.
The ration too has been stocked adequately, ranging from pre-cooked, packaged and canned items to food grains, they added.
Brigadier A S Rathore said, We hold complete requirements of supplies for all troops which are deployed in the Ladakh sector. All warehouses are completely full to the brim.

Wanted To Kill Bashar-Al-Assad In 2017, Then-Defence Secretary Jim Mattis Opposed: Trump

Wanted To Kill Bashar-Al-Assad In 2017, Then-Defence Secretary Opposed: Trump

Wanted To Kill Bashar-Al-Assad In 2017, Then-Defence Secretary Opposed: Trump

Donald Trump said he did not regret the decision of not targetting Bashar al-Assad (File)

      Washington:

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wanted to assassinate Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad in 2017, but that his then-secretary of defense Jim Mattis opposed the operation.

"I would have rather taken him out. I had him all set," Trump told the morning show Fox & Friends.

"Mattis didn't want to do it. Mattis was a highly overrated general, and I let him go."

The revelations support reporting that came out in 2018 when Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward published his book "Fear: Trump in the White House" and which the president denied at the time.

"That was never even contemplated," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on September 5, 2018.

Trump's Tuesday remarks came as part of a castigation against Mattis, whom the president hailed as a "great man" when he hired him to run the Pentagon, but soured on the retired general who eventually resigned in late 2018.

Trump was reportedly mulling assassinating Assad after the Syrian president launched a chemical attack on civilians in April 2017.

The US leader said American forces should "go in" and "kill" Assad, Woodward reported in his book.

The journalist -- famous for uncovering the 1970s Watergate scandal that brought down president Richard Nixon -- wrote that Mattis told Trump he would "get right on it" but returned with plans for a more limited airstrike.

Trump told Fox he did not regret the decision not to target Assad, saying he "could have lived either way with that."

"I considered him certainly not a good person, but I had a shot to take him out if I wanted and Mattis was against it," Trump said.

"Mattis was against most of that stuff."

Assad has ruled Syria throughout the country's devastating years-long civil war in which hundreds of thousands have been killed.

His regime is accused of a series of crimes including torture, summary executions, rape and the use of chemical weapons.
