Taking note of the fact that there was a lack of coordination among the authorities concerned in identifying and removing encroachments in Palani, Dindigul district, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the authorities to come up with an effective response.

A Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and P. Rajamanickam observed that there was lack of coordination between the district administration, local body, law and order machinery and the temple authorities.

This had resulted in encroachers having a field day, the court said. The court took cognisance of the fact that several suits were pending with regard to the ownership of the land around the Palani Dhandayuthapaniswamy Temple.

The court also took note of Advocate Commissioner Arun Swaminathan’s submission that the entire town needed to be surveyed to identify the ownership. The court adjourned the batch of cases seeking removal of encroachments around the Palani Dhandayuthapaniswamy Temple for further hearing to October 13.

World Ozone Day 2020: Ozone Facts, Slogan And Significance

World Ozone Day 2020: Ozone Facts, Slogan And Significance

World Ozone Day 2020 Image: September 16 is observed as World Ozone Day every year

World Ozone Day 2020: Life on our planet as we know would not be possible without the ozone layer. Ozone is a highly reactive gas found in the upper layers of the atmosphere and protects life on earth from the Sun's harsh ultraviolet rays. Ozone protects life but it can also be harmful in concentrated quantities near the surface of the earth as it is produced when air pollutants react in sunlight. As we observe World Ozone Day on September 16, it is important to remember the delicate balance in our atmosphere. This year the slogan for World Ozone Day is 'Ozone For Life'.

World Ozone Day 2020: Why it is a milestone

"On Ozone Day we celebrate 35 years of the Vienna Convention to Protect the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol, which united the world to cut out gases creating a hole in the ozone layer. We need this same sense of purpose and collaboration to address all environmental threats," Inger Anderson, Executive Director, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) said in a video message ahead of World Ozone Day.

World Ozone Day 2020: Ozone Facts

  • Sometime in the late 1970s, scientists found out that gases used in refrigerators and air conditioners for cooling were creating a hole in the ozone layer
  • This was a cause of great concern as the dangerous UV rays of the sun were creating severe health issues including skin cancers
  • It was a wake-up call for governments across the world. In 1985, countries adopted the 'Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer'
  • Under the Vienna Convention's Montreal Protocol, nations worked together to cut out 99 per cent of ozone-depleting substances
  • In 2019, the Kigali Amendment came into force as a follow-up to the Montreal Protocol
  • The Kigali Amendment called for reducing greenhouse gases which cause global warming, the latest cause of worry for nations

The slogan 'Ozone For Life' is a reminder for people to care for the environment for sustainable and healthy life on earth.

President Donald Trump, in his latest shredding of political niceties, suggested Tuesday that his Democratic opponent Joe Biden has taken drugs to improve his performance in debates.

The Republican, who is well behind in the polls, initially insinuated during a Fox News interview that "something was strange" with what he saw as Biden's improvement during the Democratic primary season debates.

Early on, when there were multiple Democratic candidates lined up on stage, Biden was "a disaster" and "grossly incompetent," Trump said. But at a later debate where Biden was one-on-one with leftist rival Bernie Sanders, "he was OK."

Trump told Fox he didn't want to say what he thought was the reason for the improvement.

Seconds later, he did.

"He's taking something or you know, gives him some clarity, or whatever," he said.

Trump repeated his demand that Biden should undergo a drug test before their first of three presidential debates scheduled for September 29.

"I would take one too," he said.

Trump, 74, has for months tried to persuade voters that Biden, 77, is suffering from mental decline.

The former businessman cites Biden's penchant for gaffes -- which some believe to be linked to the Democrat's lifelong struggle with stuttering -- and his reluctance to face unscripted questioning from reporters.

Trump -- who takes questions from reporters almost daily but is known for his own frequently garbled and baffling statements -- said, "Joe is lost. We can't have a president that is mentally lost."

Trump told Fox that, with attacks from the Democrat side gaining intensity, he will now "take the gloves off."

American technology giant is hosting a virtual event on Tuesday where it is expected to announce upgrades to its products and services. Historically, the company’s September keynote event has been about its and Watch series line-ups. This year, however, the company is likely to bring upgrades to two of its vital hardware lines — the Watch Series and iPad — beyond the iPhones. That said, let’s take a look at what should be expected at the Apple event:

Series 6

At the event, the Cupertino, California-based technology company is expected to upgrade its Watch Series line-up, likely to be called the Series 6. The smartwatch could bring improvements with regard to performance and functionality. It might be powered by a faster processor for performance gains and improved user interface (WatchOS). As for features, the Watch is expected to get a sensor to monitor blood oxygen saturation, commonly referred to as SpO2. The Watch is likely to come in two sizes (40 mm and 44 mm) and two connectivity variants (WiFi and WiFi + LTE). Besides the Watch Series 6, the company could also unveil its first affordable Watch, likely to be named the Watch SE.

Air

Apple is also expected to upgrade its midrange tablet, the iPad Air, with seasonal upgrades. The upgraded iPad Air would still remain cheaper than the iPad Pro but bring some of the latter’s more premium features. The iPad Air is expected to feature a bigger screen than the current one. Moreover, Apple might add second-generation Apple Pencil support.

Apple One

On the services side, Apple is expected to debut a single-subscription-based bundle service, which might include the Apple TV+, News+, Arcade and Music. Details of the Apple One service are thin right now, but the product is expected to be similar to the Amazon Prime subscription that gives customers access to all Amazon services at a fixed subscription cost.
