YouTube’s answer to TikTok is coming to India soon

Ever since the app got banned in India, there has been a mad rush to create TikTok clones to plug the gap left by the hugely popular Chinese app. Instagram created Reels and now Google is joining the bandwagon with a TikTok clone. Google-owned video streaming platform YouTube has announced that it is going to soon launch its own TikTok-like service — called Shorts — in India in a beta stage.
“This is an early version of the product, but we're releasing it now to bring you — our global community of users, creators and artists — on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts,” said the company in a blog post.
YouTube Shorts is pretty much like TikTok videos or Instagram Reels that allows users to make 15 seconds — or less — clips with different editing options available such as speed control, timer and countdown, etc.
In the early beta stage, Shorts will give users a “multi-segment camera” to put together multiple video clips and the option to record with music from a library of songs which the company says will keep getting more tracks.
The company will be adding the icon to create YouTube Shorts in the center of the homepage of the app with a Plus icon to give it more prominence. This icon has right now been rolled out for Android users in the country and is soon expected to be made available to iOS users too.
While the company has first rolled out Shorts in India, it has also confirmed that it is soon going to bring it to other countries too.
“We’ll continue to add more features and expand to more countries in the coming months as we learn from you and listen to your feedback,” added the company in a blog post.
