National Security Advisor Ajit Doval Tuesday left the meeting of NSAs of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members after Pakistan “deliberately projected a fictitious map” of the country in “blatant disregard to the advisory by the host” Russia.

In response to a query at a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said NSA Ajit Doval walked out of the virtual meeting after Pakistan’s representative Dr Moeed Yusuf projected in the background the new political map of the country that depicts Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, and claims the regions of Sir Creek and the erstwhile state of Junagadh in Gujarat as part of its territory.

“At the meeting of the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), hosted by the Chair of the SCO (Russia), the Pakistani NSA deliberately projected a fictitious map that Pakistan has recently been propagating,” Srivastava said.

He added that the showcasing of the map was in “blatant disregard to the advisory by the host (Russia) against it and in violation of the norms of the meeting.” After consulting the Russian NSA, Doval left the meeting in protest at that juncture.

“As was to be expected, Pakistan then went on to present a misleading view of this meeting,” the MEA said. Pakistan’s ruling party PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf) has claimed that the SCO agreed to its position with respect to the new political map of the country and overruled objections by Doval before he left the meeting in protest.

The new political map of Pakistan was unveiled by Prime Minister Imran Khan on the eve of the first anniversary of the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370.

The map depicts the entirety of Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory while also incorporating Siachen as part of Pakistan. It does not show any borders in the east of Kashmir, where China has illegally occupied Aksai Chin. It also incorporates Sir Creek into Pakistani territory as well as parts of the erstwhile princely state of Junagadh.

India has rejected the authenticity of the map and called it an “exercise in political absurdity”.

“This is an exercise in political absurdity, laying untenable claims to territories in the Indian State of Gujarat and our Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and of Ladakh. These ridiculous assertions have neither legal validity nor international credibility. In fact, this new effort only confirms the reality of Pakistan’s obsession with territorial aggrandisement supported by cross-border terrorism,” the MEA had then said in a statement.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has signed a new deal with Arsenal that ties him down with the London club until 2023.

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang used a live video recording on Twitter on Tuesday to announce he has signed a contract extension with the Premier League club.

It’s finally done. I’m really, really happy to be staying here, the striker said into his phone which he was holding in his outstretched right arm as he walked the field at Emirates Stadium.

Aubameyang, who has scored 55 goals in 86 league appearances since his move from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, has reportedly signed a three-year deal that ties him to Arsenal until 2023 when he will be 34.

I signed the thing because I want to become an Arsenal legend, he said. To leave a legacy.

Aubameyang had been deliberating over whether to extend his initial deal that was due to expire at the end of this season. That would have left him free to negotiate with other teams from January.

Securing the future of his most important player is a significant achievement for manager Mikel Arteta as he looks to return Arsenal to the Champions League and title contention in the Premier League after an eighth-place finish last season.

Aubameyang shared the Golden Boot, the trophy given to the Premier Leagues leading scorer, at the end of his first full season at Arsenal. He scored 22 goals last season, putting him one behind No. 1 Jamie Vardy. He also scored twice in the FA Cup final in August to give Arsenal a 2-1 win over Chelsea and the club’s first trophy under Arteta.

Lok Sabha Passes Bill To Cut Salaries Of MPs By 30% Amid Cost Cuts Over COVID-19

Lok Sabha passed a bill to reduce MPs' salaries by 30% for a year due to cost cuts over Covid

    New Delhi:

Lok Sabha has passed a bill to reduce for one year the salaries of MPs by 30 per cent "to meet the exigencies" arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2020 was introduced in the Lower House on Monday. It will replace the Salary, Allowances And Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020.

The ordinance was cleared by the Cabinet on April 6 and put into effect the next day.

Replying to the debate on the bill, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that funds are needed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and "charity should begin from home".

He also said that the economy was affected due to the lockdown, and in such a situation, the government has taken important decisions to deal with the crisis.

Responding to the demand by opposition members to restore MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), he said: "Whatever decision we have taken on MPLADS is temporary and only for two years".

It was decided by the government to suspend the MPLADS funds for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

Under the scheme, members of both Houses can recommend development programmes involving spending of Rs 5 crore every year.

The Congress and other opposition parties in Lok Sabha demanded the restoration of MPLADS funds even as they supported the government's decision to cut the salaries of members of Parliament.

Leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, said the MPLADS funds should be restored as it is being used by the members for development works in their respective constituencies.

Everybody has called for the restoration of the funds, so "why not we pass a unanimous resolution that the fund should be restored," he said.

He said that 93 per cent of the funds have been utilised by the members and the bulk of them were used for welfare activities for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and villagers.

He said that while the government is giving tax relief to corporates, it is cutting the salaries of the MPs, and termed it as being "penny-wise and pound-foolish".

"I am appealing to the House that this fund should be restored," he added.

Members who echoed the demand included AAP's Bhagwant Mann, independent member from Maharashtra Navneet Ravi Rana, Ritesh Pandey (BSP) and AIMIM's S I Jaleel.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra said the government is doing a disservice through this decision.
