Former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini has received relief from the Supreme Court in the 29-year-old Balwant Singh Multani case. The Supreme Court has stayed Saini's arrest till further orders. The former DGP had filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court. The Punjab and Haryana High Court's decision was challenged in this.
During the hearing in the apex court on Tuesday, Saini's lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said that his client was an excellent officer. Rohatgi said that an FIR was lodged against Saini in a malicious manner and he has now retired.
Saini's lawyer told the court that the state government was behind Saini as he had filed two charges against the current Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Amarinder Singh was accused of this.
The apex court issued notice to the Punjab government seeking a response to the petition of former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini. The court said that Saini would not be arrested until the next hearing on the case would be held after two weeks.
