Several political parties raise concern over rising suicide cases

New Delhi: Political parties in Parliament on Tuesday expressed their concerns over the rising suicide cases in the country. Anand Sharma from Congress and Ram Gopal Yadav from Samajwadi Party (SP) raised the issue during the Zero Hour. Yadav said the lockdown has resulted in the destruction of businesses which has led to despair among people. “There is a prevalent sadness among people on account of loss of money, jobs and businesses and this is leading them to suicide,” Yadav said in the Upper House.

“In Noida, the number of deaths in the last four- five months due to Covid-19 are 44. In the same period in Noida, 165 people committed suicide till Monday.” He demanded that the Centre should provide Rs 15,000 per month to those who have lost their jobs during the lockdown. “A number of countries are doing it and this is the need of the hour,” he said. Sharma also supported Yadav’s demand. “Across the world, about eight lakh people commit suicide annually. Of this, 1.39 lakh suicides happen in India. India accounts for 15 per cent of the total suicides of the world. There is a suicide happening every three and half minutes in India,” Sharma told the House.

He also said there was a 4 per cent increase in suicide cases in India last year and every seventh person is suffering from depression, according to reports. He said the number of persons affected by mental illness increased exponentially during the Covid-19 crisis. “Mental health situation in India demands active policy intervention and resource allocation by the government. Mental illness should mandatorily be put under the ambit of life insurance. This will help people see mental illness with the same lens they use for physical diseases,” he said. Several members associated themselves with the concerns raised by the two leaders.

JERUSALEM: Sirens warning of rocket fire from Gaza sounded in southern Israel on Tuesday as a ceremony was under way in Washington for the signing of agreements normalising relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The Israeli military said the alert was sounded in the coastal cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod.

Israel’s Channel 12 TV said two people were wounded by rocket fragments at a shopping mall in Ashdod.

In Gaza, which is controlled by the Islamist Hamas militant group, dozens of Palestinians rallied outside a U.N. office to condemn normalisation with Israel, shortly before the signing ceremony began at the White House.

“Palestine isn’t for sale,” protesters chanted.
