Innocent photos of children's bedroom hide a sinister detail that caused 'significant' health issues | Daily Mail Online

Innocent photos of children's bedroom hide a sinister detail that caused 'significant' health issues - and wasn't discovered until YEARS after family moved in

  • A Victorian family have discovered their home was formerly an illegal drug lab
  • Tests were conducted because a child at the home had 'significant health issues'
  • Researchers found methamphetamine in the kids' rooms, on walls and soft toys
  • A new study has found the drug, known as ice, can linger in the air

Australian parents whose child was suffering from 'significant health issues' discovered their house was contaminated with meth - years after they moved in.

Researchers tested the Victorian home after a child living at the residence began suffering from unexplained illnesses.

Despite the property appearing immaculate to the naked eye, the children's bedrooms were found to be coated in drug residue, with traces on walls, furnishings - and even soft toys.

Levels exceeded the Australian safety guidelines, prompting the family to move out and donate their belongings for further research, Yahoo reports.

The items contributed to a new study investigating how the substance can linger in the air and move around homes that have been used as illegal drug labs well after the facility has been shutdown.

Researchers from Adelaide's Flinders University sampled the air inside meth-contaminated homes - where some low-budget manufacturers cook the stimulant.

It found significant levels of the drug floating around inside and above household possessions, including soft toys after they had been moved off-site.

Methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, can seep from gyprock walls and other furnishings into the air, the academics said.

Jackie Wright, one of the experts behind the peer-reviewed study, said inhalation of meth posed a significant risk to house members along with the more well-known exposure methods of dermal absorption and ingestion.

Surface wipes deployed during testing don't measure inhalation contaminants and regulations need to change, she said.

'Australian guidelines currently allow for the assessment of methamphetamine in contaminated properties, or properties contaminated with other illicit drugs, but ignore inhalation exposure,' Dr Wright said in a statement on Tuesday.

'These policies can significantly underestimate the risks in former meth houses when new owners aren't aware, and therefore indicate the guidelines don't currently address protective health measures.'

Methamphetamine exposure risks through inhalation varies depending on the age of those inside a contaminated home, Flinders University associate professor Stewart Walker notes.

He says it's the most likely mode of transmission for adults (60 per cent), but not so for young children (20 per cent).

Their main intake threats are absorbing the drug through their skin due to more commonly coming into contact with surfaces and objects, or ingestion because of their propensity to put things in their mouth.

Fellow associate professor Kirstin Ross says further research into air analysis of contaminated homes should be done to protect concerned families.

'This would provide additional insight into the levels of contamination in a home,' she said.

'This data supports our assessment that the air phase is an important aspect of the transfer of methamphetamine contamination and the inhalation pathway is just as relevant as surface sampling when evaluating exposure risks.'

KOLKATA: Kolkata Metro on Tuesday relaxed its norms for senior citizens, allowing them to board trains without an e-pass during non-peak hours, provided they furnish identity proof at the gates. The rapid transit system, which resumed passenger services on Monday after about six months, issued a notification, stating that senior citizens won't have to procure the digital boarding pass and will be permitted to enter the station and approach ticket counters for smart cards, after producing necessary documents.
The facility will be available for them from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Several elderly persons in the city have complained that they were finding it difficult to download e-passes from 'Pathadisha', the Metro Railway app.
"Senior citizens have expressed their difficulty in reserving the slot through the bot.
"Considering their difficulty, it has been decided by competent authority that the requirement of e-pass will be relaxed for senior citizens, who will be allowed entry into metro station on the basis of Aadhar card/PAN card/voter id/passport/driving license, through which age can be ascertained," the notification said.
Manoj Joshi, the general manager of Kolkata Metro, said arrangements would be made at the entry points to ensure that no one takes advantage of the norm relaxation, which is strictly meant for senior citizens.
Around 20,500 passengers travelled on the Kolkata Metro in a span of 12 hours from 8 am on Monday, maintaining safety protocols.
Trains halted at stations for 30 seconds instead of 20 seconds, as was the practice, to avoid rush during boarding and deboarding, a Metro Railway spokesperson said.

The family of a 15-year-old girl killed in the Manchester Arena bombing have shared how their "hearts have been shattered into a million pieces".
The loved ones of Megan Hurley presented a "pen portrait" of their "amazing girl" during the second week of the inquiry into the 2017 attack.
The portraits give each family the chance to present an insight into the lives of those who died.
Twenty-two people died when a bomb was detonated as people left the arena.
A slideshow of photographs documenting Megan's life were displayed on screen at Manchester Magistrates' Court as the family's lawyer read out words from her loved ones.

"Since the horrendous day in May 2017 our lives have been ruined for forever," her family wrote in their statement.
"Our hearts have been shattered into a million pieces. The pain we feel day in and day out, year upon year.
"Losing Megan has left an enormous and irreparable void in our lives. We miss you more than words can say, Megan.
"You will forever be our beautiful beauty queen."
Figen Murray, the mother of Martyn Hett, also presented a "pen portrait" to the inquiry.
She said the 29-year-old, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, had "the most incredible passion for life" and an "energy that was exhausting at times" living at "100 miles an hour".
"He had this catching charisma about him," she said. "Everybody just loved him."
"He was proud of who he was, he believed in who he was."
She said his loss left "this absolutely massive, gaping hole inside my soul."

The inquiry comes more than three years after the bombing at the end of an Ariana Grande concert, which left hundreds more injured.
It was due to start in June, but was delayed by the trial of Salman Abedi's brother Hashem, who was jailed for at least 55 years for 22 murders on 20 August.
The commemorative hearings are expected to conclude on 23 September.
The inquiry was set up to examine the background to the attack and the response of the emergency services.
Its chairman, Sir John Saunders, will make a report and recommendations once all the evidence has been heard, which is expected to take up to six months.
