SURAT: A 26-year-old man was rescued by teams of police and fire department early on Monday when he was trying to jump off a bridge into Tapi river in Surat.
Due to the timely move of tying a rope around his waist, the rescue team could prevent a fall into river water as the man had already jumped off the bridge parapet.
Ambuj Shukla, a resident of Ichhapore, arrived at the spot on his motorcycle at around 3am and parked it on the Cable Stayed Bridge. He crossed the parapet that divides road and walkway. Meanwhile, a police team reached the spot and Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) was also alerted.
Soon Shukla crossed the bridge parapet, an iron railing, and stood on the outer edge of the bridge holding the railing bar with his hand. Realising the situation cops and fire team tried to keep him busy in talks and convince him to avoid jumping. But he refused and was adamant to end life. He was asked to describe his problem but he refused.
The SFES team was ready with life-saving jackets and ring buoys to jump behind Shukla in water. Since it was night there was a limited chance of rescue in the dark, said a fire official.
Meanwhile, diverting his attention a fire officer put a rope around Shukla's waist. Soon realising this Shukla jumped. "I could successfully tie a rope around his waist when his attention was diverted in talking with cops but it turned challenging as he immediately jumped. The policemen and fire officials joined in pulling him back on the bridge holding his hand and feet," said Ishwar Patel, fire officer.
