Karnataka water resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi has said that the state will seek approval of  Union Forest and Environment ministry for the Mekedatu dam project to supply drinking water to Bengaluru and recharge the groundwater table in the region.

Speaking to media persons in Ramnagar today, the minister said that the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has already given its approval for the project. He further said that a 9000 crore rupees action plan is ready to build the dam and that he will meet the Union Environment minister soon to impress upon him the need for early clearance.

Tamil Nadu has raised the objection that the project will curtail the flow of Cauvery river water at Biligundlu, a common border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
