MANGALURU/UDUPI: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district continued to bear the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic in the coastal districts reporting 413 fresh cases on Monday.
The development came on a day when health authorities in Udupi did not issue the daily Covid-19 bulletin on grounds that the
Karnataka government medical officers were on strike, according to the district health and family welfare officer Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.
In DK, 185 out of the 413 cases reported were categorised as influenza-like illness, 135 were reported in primary contacts, source of infection in 76 patients is under investigation and 17 patients were diagnosed with severe acute respiratory infection. Fifty-four per cent or 225 of the reported cases were symptomatic.
Mangaluru taluk reported 169 of these cases, Puttur 66, Bantwal 65, Belthangady 47, Sullia 43 and those from outside DK 23.
Health authorities discharged 297 patients including 164 in institutional quarantine and remaining 133 from home quarantine. With this, the total number of patients discharged rose to 13,284 and the active cases crossed the 4,000-mark to settle at 4,045. Five Covid-19 related deaths in DK, including three patients from outside DK and one each from Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks, took the death toll in DK to 447, Dr K V Rajendra, DC said.
In the state media bulletin that department of health and family welfare released subsequently, the number of new Covid-19 cases reported in Udupi was 40, taking the total number of positive cases to 14,086. With no deaths recorded and none shown as discharged, the total numbers of those discharged stood at 12,043 and active cases at 1,914. The total Covid-19 related deaths in Udupi is 129. Eight patients in Udupi are undergoing treatment at the ICU, the bulletin mentioned.
