Man arrested after fatal assault in Sydney's inner west

A man has died and another arrested following what police believe was a fatal assault outside a unit block in Sydney's inner west on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to Swanson Street, Erskineville about 8.50pm following reports of a physical altercation between two men before one of them fled the scene.

The other man, a 57-year-old, was found with severe head and facial injuries.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A crime scene was established and following inquiries police attended a nearby unit block on Swanson Street about 12.45am on Monday and arrested a 28-year-old man.

The younger man was not a relative of the older man but was known to him, police said.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
