KURUKSHETRA: A migrant labourer who was sleeping in the open ground on a charpoy at Thanesar grain market in Kurukshetra was crushed to death by some heavy vehicle in the wee hours on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Shambhu Shah (42), a resident of Gaddi village in Supaul district of Bihar.
The investigation officer (IO) sub-inspector (SI) Sahib Singh told Shambhu along with his brother Suresh Pal had been working as labourers (palledar) at Thanesar grain market from the past about 7 years and both are married and their families are settled back in their native village.
Shambhu had reached Kurukshetra from Bihar on Sunday only.
“Before the lockdown, Shambhu had gone to his native village in Bihar and he could not come back due to lockdown. He reached Kurukshetra on Sunday only and after having dinner, he slept on a charpoy in the open ground in front of shop number 135 where he worked at Thanesar grain market, while his brother was sleeping on the rooftop of this shop. At about 12 am, when his colleagues saw him, he was sleeping fine but in the morning at about 5 am, he was found crushed by some heavy vehicle”, said SI Sahib Singh.
The IO said on the complaint of Shambhu’s brother, Suresh Pal, a case has been registered against unknown vehicle driver under Section 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Krishna Gate police station on Monday.
Suresh stated to the police, “I and my brother had been working as labourers at grain market, Thanesar from past about 7 years. On Sunday my brother Shambhu Shah reached Kurukshetra from Bihar and he was sleeping in the open at the grain market when some unknown vehicle crushed him in his sleep.”
SI Sahib said, “On Monday, after conducting the post-mortem, dead body of the deceased has been handed over to his family members. Efforts are being done to identify the vehicle which crushed the labourer. There were no CCTV cameras installed nearby and the possibilities are being explored.”
