The slums built along the railway line in the country's capital Delhi will not be removed at present. This information was given to the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared in the court on behalf of the Central Government. The government said in the court that the urban development ministry, the railway ministry, and the Delhi government would sit together and resolve the matter in four weeks, till then the slums would not be demolished. The apex court then adjourned the case for four weeks.
During the hearing, Tushar Mehta told the court, "The Center has yet to decide on removing 48,000 slums from the railway tracks in Delhi." No one will be removed as the decision will be taken in consultation with the Railways, Government of Delhi, and Ministry of Urban Development. The Supreme Court then recorded the Centre's assurances and ordered not to take any punitive action against the slum dwellers for four weeks.
Every slum has an electricity connection
According to an estimate, there are around 2,40,000 people living in slums in Narayana Vihar, Azadpur Shakur Basti, Mayapuri, Srinivaspuri, Anand Parbat, and Okhla. In this connection, Northern Railway submitted a report to the Supreme Court. It was said that the slums built on the side of the railway tracks are an obstacle in keeping the tracks clean. However, the interesting thing is that every slum has an electricity connection. People living here also have Aadhaar and ration cards.
Let me tell you that the case was heard on September 3. The court then directed the removal of 48,000 slums built along the railway tracks of 140 kilometers in Delhi within three months. In the previous hearing, the court said that there should be no political interference in the implementation of this move.
