
Parliament Today LIVE News Updates: NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was re-elected as Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha through a voice vote on Monday. “I declare that Harivansh ji has been chosen as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha,” said Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. Speaking on Harivansh’s election and his previous term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Harivanshji’s unbiased role in the Parliament strengthens our democracy.”
As many as 17 members of Parliament have tested positive for coronavirus as they took mandatory Covid test before attending Parliament monsoon session that commenced on Monday, news agency ANI reported.
In Loksabha, BJP member Ravi Kishan raised the issue of drug menace in Bollywood and asked the Government to take strict action against those involved in drug trafficking. Ahead of the Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday exuded confidence that members of Parliament will speak in one voice to express their solidarity with the soldiers guarding the country’s borders. Amid the ongoing border row with China in Ladakh, Modi said that the soldiers are bravely discharging their duties while standing guard in difficult hilly terrains with snowfall expected in the coming days and weeks.
The Congress and some other Opposition parties are preparing to oppose four Bills, including three farm-related ones that are to replace ordinances, and demand that these be sent to the select committee of Rajya Sabha. The CPM said it will oppose all 11 ordinances promulgated during the lockdown. Its members have moved notice for statutory resolutions opposing these ordinances and demanding their withdrawal in both Houses of Parliament.

"No language is inferior, no language is superior. Along with Hindi, let us try to learn and use as many language possible. There's no impositopn, no opposition. This should be the postion of the languages," says Naidu. "I always advise children to learn one more language other than their mother language and am happy many of them are trying to do so."
Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu thanked all the MPs, frontline workers including doctors, other healh workers, police, media, and essential service providers including farmers for their services towards public during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rajya Sabha resumed after an hour and observed silence over deaths of several people in natural calamities across the countries.

The Centre informed the Parliament on Monday that no data was available on the deaths of migrant workers caused due to the sudden nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic in the country this year. Responding to a question on whether thousands of migrant labourers lost their lives during this period, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, through a written reply, said “no such data is available”. On whether any compensation or relief was provided to the victim’s family, the government said, “Question does not arise in view of the previous question.”

Lok Sabha Monday decided to do away with Question Hour and private members' business during the Monsoon session, sparking strong criticism from opposition members who accused the government of stifling democracy. The lower house adopted the motion to suspend Question Hour, with the government maintaining that it is not running away from discussion and will reply to all questions raised by the opposition. A remark on Sitharaman by TMC MP Sougata Roy was expunged by the House today. Reacting to the remark, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi said: "Commenting on attire, being a senior member, what is he talking about? He should apologise unconditionally. It is an insult to the womenfolk."
While defending the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: "We are looking at those cooperatives those who use the word bank, banker or banking. It is not meant for all cooperative institutions."
The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill was also introduced in the Lok Sabha today by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam. Opposing this, TMC MP Sougata Roy said: "The horrible state of the economy has led to the introduction of this bill. Through this ordinance, power has been taken to alter the financial structure of the bank. The motive is all financial regularities should be under the control of the central government." Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said: "The bill proposes alterations in banks. It infringes upon the federal structure of the society."
The Epidemic ordinance was also introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
The Salary, Allowance and Pension for Members of the Parliament bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
