A city-based girl, who almost lost hope of writing NEET at a private college in Gummidipoondi after she forgot her original Aadhaar card at home, was helped by a policeman posted there for bandobust. He rushed all the way to Purasawalkam on his bike and returned to the centre with the card 10 minutes before the deadline to enter the exam hall.

The girl, B Mounika of Purasawalkam, reached the TJS Engineering College in Gummidipoondi along with her mother around 11 am. However, the staff did not allow her inside the hall as she had only the photocopy of Aadhaar and not the original. The students were supposed to carry an original government identity card along with the admit card Since they did not have a phone with them, it was not possible to link the phone number with the card to download Aadhaar online.
While they were helpless, Gummidipoondi DSP Ramesh, who was at the spot, inquired about the situation and the staff at the centre said the candidate has to enter the hall before 1.30 pm and it was already 12 noon.
As per his instructions, S Magheshwaran, a Grade-II Constable of Arambakkam police station, picked up the girl’s mother and rushed to their house in Purasawalkam and received the card from her. To reach the centre early, he left the girl’s mother at home and rushed back to the college.
When he reached the premises, it was 1.20 pm. With the Aadhaar card, the girl was admitted inside the exam hall. Since the girl’s mother did not come back to the college, Mageshwaran offered to pick up the girl after the exam and took her to Red Hills bus stand, from where the girl boarded the bus to reach home.
When contacted, Mounika said that she has done her best. “I did not know that the original identity card was a must,” she said. Mageshwaran, who was inducted into the department just six months ago, said that he might not have been able to reach the centre if the girl’s mother accompanied him back to the college. “So, it’s my responsibility to send the girl back home safe,” he said.
