MUMBAI: BMC will aggressively fine people outdoors without a face mask Rs200 from Sunday. Each ward will have 10-15 officials to collect fines, which was reduced drastically from Rs1,000. "We don't want action to be punitive but an opportunity to educate people about the need to wear a face mask when outdoors,'' said additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani.
Given the sudden rise in cases since Ganpati visarjan over a week back, BMC decided to take up measures. Apart from increased house-to-house surveys and tests, BMC will review containment zones regularly. "We will also conduct checks at private and public hospitals to ensure there is adequate supply of oxygen,'' added Kakani.
Meanwhile, BMC will launch its 'My family, my responsibility' campaign from September 15 (Tuesday) using social media campaigns advising people on measures to be adopted at home, while stepping out and in offices to keep Covid away.
Family members should pay special attention to children and senior citizens at home, sit beside each other while having food, instead of opposite, and avoid gatherings, according to BMC's campaign. An advisory on bathing and washing clothes after returning home will also be spelt out.
BMC said people should avoid talking to fellow passengers in buses unless necessary. Corporate offices have been told to call fewer employees to work, avoid the use of AC, keep windows open and ensure adequate distance in seating arrangements.
