The Covid-19 pandemic continues to grow in India amid concerns that the second-most populous nation may soon be the worst-hit in the world.

India added 94,372 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to more than 47.5 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 13. This includes more than 37 lakh patients who've recovered and more than 78,500 who succumbed to the illness.

Fresh cases India reported on Sunday fell after growing at a record pace in the last few days. The number, however, is still higher than what any other nation has added in a single day.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 47,54,356

  • Active cases: 9,73,175

  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 37,02,595

  • Deaths: 78,586

  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 94,372

  • One-day recoveries: 78,399

  • One-day deaths: 1,114

Even though India’s total case load is second only to the U.S.’s 64 lakh infections, the country’s recovery rate remains above 77%.

A nationwide serological survey, however, has suggested that the country's case toll might be larger than what is recorded. “The findings of the first national population-based serosurvey indicated that 0.73% of adults in India were exposed to SARS-CoV-2, amounting to 6.4 million (64 lakh) infections in total by early May 2020,” the Indian Council of Medical Research said in its survey note.

In mid-May, around when the ICMR began the survey, India had reported just over 85,000 confirmed infections.

The U.S. reported its deadliest day since Aug. 26 while the global death toll from the novel coronavirus moved closer to 1 million. The University of Oxford is resuming trials of an experimental vaccine with AstraZeneca Plc after a halt due to a participant who fell ill. France, Europe’s latest hot spot, reported the most cases since ending a national lockdown four months ago.

The total number of cases globally rose rose above 28.5 million, with deaths exceeding 917,100.
