WASHINGTON: Incendiary shouts by agitated black men of "we hope you die" aimed at two cops fighting for their lives in a hospital after being shot in an ambush in Los Angeles inflamed the US political arena on Sunday, with partisan wrangling on the provocations leading to the incidents.
Video footage of the incident showed an identified person walk up to a patrol car and shoot before running away. The cops, one of them a female officer, were rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Soon after a small group of young black men tried to go into the hospital, apparently happy the cops were shot because they were agitated by the police killing of a black man some days earlier.
"To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling "We hope they die" referring to 2 LA Sheriff's ambushed today in #Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES & EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL. People's lives are at stake when ambulances can't get through," the LA County sheriff's office tweeted amid outrage at their behavior.
President Trump retweeted the message, adding, "If they die, fast trial death penalty for the killer. Only way to stop this!" Earlier he had retweeted video grab of the shooting, saying, "Animals that must be hit hard!"
Trump and his supporters have long sought to conflate BlackLivesMatter and civil rights protestors with violent anarchists and provocateurs, including suggesting the latter have the backing of Democrats.
But both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris condemned the LA shooting.
"Doug and I are keeping the two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies in our hearts as they currently fight for their lives after a horrific attack last night. The perpetrator must be brought to justice," Kamala Harris, who was Attorney General of California and its chief law enforcement officer of the state before she became US Senator, said.
"This cold-blooded shooting is unconscionable and the perpetrator must be brought to justice.Violence of any kind is wrong; those who commit it should be caught and punished. Jill and I are keeping the deputies and their loved ones in our hearts and praying for a full recovery," Biden tweeted.
Black activists protested that the action of a few hotheaded young men should not be used to stigmatize righteous protests. "Hey guys, 4 idiots standing outside a hospital while a couple of them yell "We hope they die" isn't a black lives matter protest. But if you want to blame an entire group for the actions of a few people, I have plenty of videos of unarmed black people being murdered by police," one activist tweeted.
