Porsche 993 By Gunther Werks Is Faster Than A 991.1 Turbo S On The Track

Gunther Werks recently delivered the first customer example of its 993-based 400R and Randy Pobst from Motor Trend has had the opportunity to put it through its paces at a racetrack.

Officially named the Porsche 993 Remastered by Gunther Werks, this 911 is powered by a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pushing out 431 hp and 312 lb-ft (423 Nm). That engine is air-cooled and revs to 8,100 rpm and making it all the more exhilarating is the medium-weight flywheel.

While the 4.0-liter flat-six used by the most recent 911 GT3 RS is good for 512 hp, the 993 from Gunther Werks is significantly lighter than any modern Porsche 911. In fact, it weighs less than 2,700 lbs (1,224 kg).

Motor Trend tested out two examples at Willow Springs Raceway. One was the first customer model, painted in a light shade of green, while the second was a bright yellow example affixed with a large rear wing. With Pobst behind the wheel of the yellow car, it posted a lap time of 1:26.90 in Willow Springs, meaning it is faster than a Mercedes-AMG GT S and a Porsche 991.1 911 Turbo S Coupe.

It’s not just power and performance that makes the 993 Remastered by Gunther Werks such a special thing, though. The gorgeous bodywork includes flared front and rear wheel arches, as well bespoke fascias, and brings the classic design into the modern age.
