MUMBAI: A 53-year-old inspector attached to Vakola police station succumbed to Covid-19 early on Sunday. Inspector Xavier Rego, who had recently been hospitalised after a road accident, was on leave and was recovering. His Covid test report came positive later on Sunday after his death.
A 1993 batch police inspector, Rego was earlier attached to Dindoshi police station before being transferred to Vakola police station. About a fortnight ago, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and suffered a fracture. He was recovering at home. For the past three days or so, Rego was developing a fever. "Around 5.30am on Sunday, Rego abruptly collapsed and fell unconscious on the bathroom floor. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead," said Manjunath Singe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone 8).
Doctors said Rego had suffered a heart attack. Samples were then sent testing for Covid-19. This is the 75th death in the Mumbai Police force.
