Piyush Goyal (File photo)NEW DELHI: Gujarat and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have emerged as the best performers among states and Union Territories in the 2019 states startup rankings, while Karnataka and Kerala have been named the top performers.
The department for promotion of industry and internal trade, which started the ranking in 2018, unveiled the results of 2019, the second edition of the ranking exercise. Gujarat had emerged as the best performer in 2018, while the top performers were Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha and Rajasthan.
Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Chandigarh were among states and UTs in the leaders category. This category recognises the states that have set up their startup initiatives and measurable goals for their
startup community. They have also ensured robust institutional mechanism for implementing their startup policy, with effective communication systems. The states among the aspiring leaders category include Haryana, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Punjab, Telangana and Uttarakhand.
Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tamil NAdu and UP are among the emerging startup ecosystem category. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the Centre and states coming together in the spirit of cooperation, collaboration and competition to promote startups, is an important development.
Describing the startups as the store-house of talent, knowledge and ideas, Goyal said the ranking will not help states and UTs, but also entrepreneurs, and will help in expansion of the startups and launching of new ventures.
