'He looked like he wanted to kill someone': Nurse recalls Westmead Hospital attack

A western Sydney nurse wounded during an alleged attack from a patient said the man looked like he wanted to kill someone after punching a security guard before turning his attention on her.

Bec Davis, 31, has recounted the experience of being allegedly set upon by the 26-year-old Winston Hills man at Westmead Hospital on Friday morning, in an incident from which she suffered a large, deep cut to her forehead.

"I kept trying to run and then his arms went around my neck. And then his body weight came down on me and I just went into the door frame," Ms Davis told Nine News.

The nurse said the emergency department patient, who is due to face Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday on multiple assault charges, jumped out of his bed "all of a sudden" before punching one of the security guards.

"The security guard was so scared that he just started running, and they ran around the whole department in front of all the other patients and staff. The gentleman, he gave up chasing the security guard, and then he looked at me," Ms Davis said.

"He had really scary eyes."

He allegedly punched Ms Davis in the back of the head before grabbing her, which caused her to fall, hitting her head on a door.

"He looked like he wanted to kill someone, I was shocked that I became the target, like out of nowhere," she said.

The alleged attacker was restrained before hospital staff sedated him.

Ms Davis was treated for her injury at Westmead before being taken to another nearby hospital for further treatment.

According to NSW Police, the 40-year-old male security guard was punched in the face and arm and was treated at the scene following the incident.

Parramatta police area command Chief Inspector Traci Watt said no person deserved to be assaulted in their workplace, "but emergency services personnel are appalled and horrified that this nurse, an essential health care worker, whose sole role is to help people, has been assaulted and injured as a result of this."

Chief Inspector Watt said the man was taken into police custody and charged with assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and reckless wounding.

He was refused bail to appear before a magistrate on Sunday.
