Coronavirus cases in India continued to surge at a record pace, triggering concerns that the second-most populous nation may soon be the worst-hit in the world.

India added more than 97,000 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to nearly 46.6 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 12. This includes over 36 lakh patients who've recovered and more than 77,000 who succumbed to the illness.

Fresh cases India reported on Saturday is the highest recorded by any county in a single day, breaking its own previous record for the third straight day.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 46,59,984
  • Active cases: 9,58,316
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 36,24,196
  • Deaths: 77,472
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 97,570
  • One-day recoveries: 81,533
  • One-day deaths: 12,01

Even though India’s total case load is second only to the U.S.’s 64 lakh infections, the country’s recovery rate remains above 77%. In fact, Saturday marked the highest number of patients cured of the coronavirus in a 24-hour period.

However, a nationwide serological survey has suggested that the country's case toll might be larger than what is recorded. “The findings of the first national population-based serosurvey indicated that 0.73% of adults in India were exposed to SARS-CoV-2, amounting to 6.4 million infections in total by early May 2020,” the Indian Council of Medical Research said in its survey note.

In mid-May, around when the ICMR began the survey, India had reported just over 85,000 confirmed infections.

Global Update

Japan is preparing to relax restrictions on attendance numbers for events including professional sports games, as the recent wave of infections subsides and the government seeks to further open the economy. The Australian state of Victoria reported another drop in cases and deaths.

Global cases reached 28.3 million, with deaths at 912,212. U.S. cases rose 0.8%, above the 0.6% average daily increase of the previous week. The virus is surging among the young in the U.K., as France’s prime minister warned of a “clear degradation” with more than 9,000 cases reported for a second day.
