Matt Olson's Homer Backs Sean Manaea, A's Beat Astros Again

Sean Manaea carried a perfect game into the sixth inning en route to winning his fourth straight start, Matt Olson hit a tworun homer and the Oakland Athletics beat the stumbling Houston Astros 31 on Thursday.

  • Last Updated: September 11, 2020, 3:51 AM IST

OAKLAND, Calif.: Sean Manaea carried a perfect game into the sixth inning en route to winning his fourth straight start, Matt Olson hit a two-run homer and the Oakland Athletics beat the stumbling Houston Astros 3-1 on Thursday.

The division-leading A’s (27-15) moved 6 1/2 games ahead of second-place Houston in the AL West. The teams split Tuesday’s doubleheader that was forced by an Aug. 30 postponement at Houston because of Oakland pitcher Daniel Mengden’s positive coronavirus test result.

Oakland had four games postponed and is 5-3 since resuming play last Friday against the Padres. Houston (22-23), which won a majors-best 107 games last season and the past three AL West titles, lost for the eighth time in nine games.

The A’s have their largest division lead since they were 6 games up on Sept. 25, 2013.

Manaea (4-2) struck out four and didn’t walk a batter over seven innings. The lefty has surged since going 0-2 over his initial five outings. He didn’t allow a runner until Josh Reddick doubled leading off the sixth.

Chad Pinder provided insurance with an RBI single in the seventh as Oakland took four of five in the series. Liam Hendriks finished the 2-hour, 18-minute game for his 12th save.

Martn Maldonado grounded into a double play that scored Houston’s lone run off Manaea in the sixth. Olson connected in the bottom half on another smoky, sunless day that had the strange sight of ballpark lights on in the afternoon. Ash fell on the field for a third straight game.

Astros right-hander Jos Urquidy (0-1) didn’t allow a runner until Marcus Semien’s one-out walk in the fourth and didn’t give up at hit until Mark Canha’s single in the fifth.

Urquidy allowed two runs and two hits over six innings in his second big league start.

Houston’s George Springer had his season-best nine-game hitting streak snapped.

FIVE GAMES

This marked the 15th five-game series in Oakland history. The A’s have never swept one but won four of the games in a five-game set for the fourth time and first since July 5-8, 1984, at Milwaukee.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Astros: RHP Justin Verlander (strained forearm) threw a bullpen Wednesday in Houston. Manager Dusty Baker was waiting to hear more details about the session and remains optimistic Verlander will return before season’s end. The Astros have mapped out the pitcher’s rehab schedule for the rest of September. He’s supposed to be on the mound if everything goes well, no setbacks here, again pretty soon, Baker said. Hopefully if everything goes well he could be back at the end of the month.

Athletics: 3B Matt Chapman still wasn’t ready to resume baseball activity as he had hoped. He is nursing right hip tendinitis that forced him out of Sundays series finale against San Diego. … LHP A.J. Puk, who hasn’t pitched this year and is on the injured list with an inflamed pitching shoulder that required injections, will be re-examined in the coming days by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

UP NEXT

The A’s are on the road with doubleheaders Saturday at Texas and Monday at Seattle.

Following an off day Friday, LHP Framber Valdz (3-3, 3.61) pitches for the Astros on Saturday in a two-game interleague stop at Dodger Stadium.

Verdict

The Coolpad Note 3 is another take on how a sub-10K smartphone should be. It is not perfect even though we wanted to be with its Octa-core processor and a fingerprint sensor. We won't recommend it right away but if you are only concerned about your privacy, this is the best option available.

Coolpad Note 3 detailed review

Smartphone technology is getting better everyday, and with it, top tier hardware from yesteryear phones is now becoming available in budget phones. This has made a significant change on how these budget smartphones perform. Though they still lack the proper firepower to go head-on against flagship devices, they won't let you down if everyday tasks are the primary concern. To quantify, in today's sub-10K smartphone bracket, an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 13MP camera have become somewhat standard.

While there are many contenders in the sub-10K category with more or less the same specs and performance, we belive that there is room for improvement. This brings us to the Coolpad Note 3. The third phone in six months from the Chinese manufacturer brings a couple of new aspects to the table in the sub-10k price bracket – a fingerprint sensor and 3GB of RAM. Will this be enough to make it a recommendable phone?

Build and Design
When we first unboxed the phone in our offices, there was a unanimous call that it looks very similar to the Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 that we had reviewed earlier. It is safe to say that the design is nothing new. However, the similarities end there. The Note 3 features a 5.5-inch display, and the overall feel of the phone is much better than the Canvas Doodle 4. The matte back with a slight curve offers comfortable grip on the phone, but it still feels big for one-handed usage. Moreover, the three capacitive navigation keys which lie under the display are not backlit, which requires some getting-used-to.

Build quality, however, is somewhat better. Along the edge runs a metal band which looks good, and gives it some sturdiness. There is an aluminum frame inside, which makes the phone feel rigid in hand. There are two physical keys, a power button to the right and a volume rocker to the left, which offer satisfying depression when pressed. The back is removable, but the battery is sealed in, which further adds to its sturdy build. Overall, even though most of the build is plastic, at an asking price of Rs. 8,999, the Coolpad Note 3 offers a reliable build quality.

Display and UI
The 5.5-inch display on the Coolpad Note 3 is good. It offers vibrant, true-to-source colours. It is adequately bright and offers good touch response. However, the visibility degrades to just reflections as soon as you view it in direct light conditions. We should also add that the omission of a full HD display is certainly evident, and the phone could have done much better with it.

On the UI front, we were greeted by Coolpad’s Cool UI, which offers bright and colourful icons. The whole UI is simple to navigate through, and the phone offers a simple, single-tab settings menu – no customisations here, apart from the vibrant colour scheme. The main attraction of the UI experience is the new fingerprint sensor which works like a charm. It is one of the fastest fingerprint scanners we have come across, and in our tests, it turned out to be quite accurate too. We tried to unlock the phone with wet fingers and in different orientations, and it worked perfectly. The fingerprint sensor can also be used to lock individual apps which is quite handy, if you store sensitive information on your phone. However, there is one black spot here, which is the pre-installed keyboard – Xploree. This keyboard keeps on accumulating advert cards on the side, related to whatever you type, and these occasionally pop up like unwanted insurance brokers.

Performance
The MediaTek chip inside provides plenty of grunt to make the phone work. Add to it the 3GB of RAM, and we have a good combo for the price. The phone is quite capable in handling everyday tasks. However, it does stutter if you open a few heavy apps back-to-back, and is rather inconsistent at times. Gaming on the phone is decent, but prolonged gaming does make it lag at times. However, the phone doesn't heat up too much, and remains relatively cooler than the competing YU Yureka Plus, under similar circumstances. Here are the synthetic benchmarks, in comparison to its competitors.

Coolpad Note 3
Create bar charts

Even though these benchmarks suggest that the phone is a good performer, but considering other phones as Yu Yureka Plus and Meizu M2 Note, the overall performance was not as streamlined as the others.

Battery
What good is a phone, if it cannot offer good battery life? The Coolpad Note 3 offers about a day’s worth. Using the phone as a daily driver, without any gaming, the phone was able to get me through an entire day, without any compromise. However, gaming burns the battery much faster, and an hour of gaming burnt almost 23% of the charge. In our standard battery test where we loop a 1080p video till the battery dies, the phone achived almost 10 hours of playback, which is quite good.

Camera
The 13MP rear camera on the Coolpad Note 3 is not one of the best shooters in this category, but it gets really close. In bright daylight conditions, images rendered decent amount of details, and true-to-source colour reproduction. However, in situations with sharp contrast of lighting, subjects appeared dark in situations with bright backgrounds, leading to overall lack of detail on an image. Images taken in low lighting conditions were good – the noise reducing algorithm keeps noise at minimal, without compromising in details.

Coolpad Note 3

Bottomline
The Coolpad Note 3 has everything that you might need from an entry level smartphone. A decent display, reliable performance and a workable camera. On top of that, this is the first and only phone which offers fingerprint security at this price point. However, Coolpad has left too many rough edges which need to be polished out. It could easily have been the best phone in its category, but loses on making the whole smartphone experience complete. So, if you are paranoid about your privacy and want to buy a phone in the sub-10K range, this is the phone to buy. But, if security is not your priority, the Meizu M2 Note is still the best phone to buy.

Biden supporters release remix of Bollywood song to woo Indian-Americans

In the November 3 election, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his Indian-American running mate Kamala Harris will challenge incumbent Republican President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

    PTI

Democratic Party members have released a musical video remix of popular "Chale Chalo" song from the superhit Bollywood movie, 'Lagaan', to woo Indian-American voters ahead of the US presidential election.

In the November 3 election, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his Indian-American running mate Kamala Harris will challenge incumbent Republican President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

"Chale Chalo, Chale Chalo, Biden ko Vote do, Biden ki Jeet Ho, Unki Haar Haan," says the lyrics of the song sung by Silicon Valley-based Bollywood Singer Titli Banerjee and released by entrepreneur couple Ajay and Vinita Bhutoria.

"It is a warfighting song, drawing from the energy of Indian celebrations, inspiring our community to awaken and vote for Biden-Harris in November, Bhutoria said after the video was released on various social media platforms on Thursday.

    related news

This is the second national Indian-American outreach video that the couple has produced to unite all South-Asians and people of Indian-origin to support Biden and Harris. Born to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, Harris is the first Indian-American and first Black woman to be picked by a major American political party for the top post.

"South Asians for Biden is thrilled to serve as a partner on this important video, which encourages Indian-Americans to vote for Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris," said Neha Dewan, National Director of South Asians for Biden.

"The stakes of this upcoming presidential election could not be higher for the Indian American community, which is why our diverse community is united behind the Biden-Harris ticket. It is absolutely crucial that we make a show of force of our voting strength. The South Asian community can be the crucial margin of victory this November," she said.

Titli Banerjee said getting the right message across during elections through music has been a long held tradition in India.

I am glad that I was able to contribute through my voice in recreating that experience and hope that the message to go out and vote for the future of America reaches all Indian Americans," she said.

Referring to the video, Bhutoria, who is also on the National AAPI Leadership Council and the National Finance committee for Biden for President 2020, said it presents the diversity of people in American community inspired by Biden's vision of hope and change.

"We come from all ages, places and professions, but we are united in our passion for a candidate who represents our common values, he said.

There is an estimated four million Indian-American population of which about 2.5 million are potential voters in the November 2020 presidential election

There are over six million South Asian voters and 1.3 million Indian-American voters in key battleground states, including Texas, Michigan, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Bhutoria claimed that over 80 per cent of the South Asians are supporting the Biden-Harris ticket.

We believe that we (South Asians) can help power Vice President Biden and Senator Harris to victory, he asserted.

The video outreach is supported by South Asians for Biden, Impact Fund, They SeeBlue, Indians for Biden National leadership council and several other South Asian organisations. It will also be shared by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) for the Biden team, according to a media statement.

The video was created by Ritesh of Awesome TV.

We wanted to make it simple, memorable, inspirational and awesome, he said.

"History Will Judge Your Silence": Kangana Ranaut Targets Sonia Gandhi

Actor Kangana Ranaut, in her fight against Maharashtra's ruling Shiv Sena, today targeted Sonia Gandhi, whose Congress party is part of the Sena-led coalition government. "History will judge your silence and indifference," she told the Congress president, calling the demolition at her office on Wednesday an act of "harassment" by the state government.

"Dear respected honourable Congress president Sonia Gandhi ji, being a woman aren't you anguished by the treatment I am given by your government in Maharashtra? Can you not request your government to uphold the principles of the constitution given to us by Dr. Ambedkar (BR Ambedkar)," Kangana Ranaut said in tweets.

"You have grown up in the west and lived here in India. You may be aware of the struggles of women. History will judge your silence and indifference when your own government is harassing women and ensuring a total mockery of law and order. I hope you will intervene," said the 33-year-old actor.

    Verdict

At Rs. 6,999, the Yu Yuphoria is definitely a value for money smartphone. It’s the best looking budget device that you can buy right now, as long as the camera isn’t a priority for you. If you need a good camera, then the Xiaomi Redmi 2 is a better smartphone. On the other hand, if you multitask a lot on your phone, then the extra 1GB of RAM on the Yuphoria will be more useful to you, at least as long as the other version of the Redmi 2 comes into the market.

    Yu Yuphoria detailed review

When your first smartphone is a runaway success, the consumer’s expectations from whatever comes next is automatically raised. This is the story of Micromax’s Yu brand, which started with the Yu Yureka, and has now follows through with the Yu Yuphoria. The Yureka though entered to a rather empty competitor-less market, while the Yuphoria enters what is easily the most difficult market segment right now.

So, did the newly launched brand follow up with an equally impressive smartphones? Here’s the Yu Yuphoria review.

    Build and Design

Yu’s strategy with the Yuphoria is reminiscent of something many Indian brands have tried before — make your phone look like the best and it will sell. The Yu Yureka is a good looking device, probably the best that the sub-7k segment can offer right now. I’m torn between this and the Redmi 2, but the addition of metal on the side can easily sway a buyer towards the Yuphoria.

The rounded metal edges though add more than just looks to the device. Yes, the metallic shine does make it look better than others, but what’s more important to me is that it provides grip. If you’ve ever used a Xiaomi Mi3, you would be familiar with what I’m saying. The rounded edges fit right into your palm, making the phone feel very natural when you hold it.

What’s even more impressive is that the story of the Yuphoria's looks doesn’t stop with the metal part of the phone. In fact, personally I’m much happier with how the phone looks from the back. Barring the absolute premiumness and camera module, this phone looks almost exactly like the erstwhile Nokia Lumia 925.

The big round camera module on the back looks unique. Yu calls this the ‘Saturn ring’ design and it adds to the design. The overall design is sure to turn some heads and may even solicit surprise from those who aren’t already familiar with this smartphone.

For me, the uniqueness is what gives this points over the Xiaomi Redmi 2. In terms of looks, the Yu Yuphoria is a first in the budget segment, while the Redmi 2, though a looker, is not exactly an unique looking smartphone. It is more compact though, which would be a big plus for those who care for such devices.

The only complaint about the design of this smartphone is about the placement of the volume rocker and power button. The power button rests between the up and down volume buttons, but it is bigger than those. As a result, it is usually pressed on one side and tends to bend towards that side. This is a disaster waiting to happen and you may very well find the power button to be non-functional after using this phone for a while.

    Display

The first real pitfall for the Yuphoria is in its display. While a 5 inch 720p display should be convincing on paper, the Yuphoria’s display is not. There’s a definite pink-ish hue all over the display, which makes apps, images and videos looks weird, if not bad.

It’s sharp enough and the viewing angles are acceptable for a budget smartphone, but I would go with the Redmi 2’s display any day, simply because it is much more accurate.

    UI

One of the biggest selling points of the Yuphoria is that it comes with CyanogenMod 12 and Android 5.0. This makes the phone only the second after the Moto E, to boast Android Lollipop out of the box in the sub-7k segment.

There isn’t much by way of unwanted apps, although the inclusion of Baton seems fruitless since it’s still in beta stage and doesn’t allow new entrants. In addition, the YUniverse apps kept freezing and crashing everytime I tried to use them.

    Performance

From our reviews of the Lenovo A6000, Xiaomi Redmi 2 and others, we’ve decided that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 isn’t a sizeable upgrade over the Snapdragon 400. That said, it is still the reigning SoC in the budget market right now. The Yu Yuphoria couples this with 2GB of RAM, which on paper should give you stellar performance.

Benchmark lovers will have nothing to complain about here, the Yu Yuphoria performs just as good as the Lenovo A6000 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi 2 and is better than the 3G variant of the Moto E. On benchmarks, the Yuphoria performs pretty much the same as these devices.

On regular usage, the Yuphoria will show some lag and stuttering after heating up. In the current 41 degrees temperature, that happens quite fast too, but one can’t really hold that against a smartphone. Under more controlled conditions, the performance is pretty much the same as its competitors.

It’s worth noting though that the phone sometimes froze on the multitasking screen, or while changing between apps. It happened only a couple of times though, so I’m not overly concerned about it.

In general, you can play for about 25 minutes before the phone starts really heating up and the lags start creeping in. This holds for intensive games like Marvel: Contest of Champions and Dead Trigger 2, while simpler games will run longer. You will lose about 14% battery in those 25 minutes, which is a little disappointing.

    Camera

The most disappointing aspect of the Yu Yuphoria for me was the camera, and it is also the reason why the Xiaomi Redmi 2 remains the best budget smartphone right now. The Yuphoria’s camera falls closer to the Lenovo A6000. It overexposes images in bright sunlight and washes them out in indoor settings.

    Yu Yuphoria

The camera is also somewhat slow to focus, irrespective of the light conditions. While low light imaging is more respectable, but it’s still not as good as the Xiaomi Redmi 2.

The Yuphoria has a slightly better camera than the Lenovo A6000 Plus and is much better than the Moto E (2nd Gen), but it can’t surpass the photos taken by the Xiaomi Redmi 2.

    Battery

While the 2230 mAh battery on this device is slightly larger than the Xiaomi Redmi 2, the battery life is more or less the same. Compared to a Moto E (2nd Gen), which is aided by its smaller and lower resolution display, the Yuphoria doesn’t stand a chance.

On regular usage, this phone won’t get you through the day, but will last for about 10-12 hours. This will change if you’re gaming a lot though. As mentioned above, the battery drops by about 14% after 25 minutes of gaming, which means there’s not a lot you’ll get out of it. It's an ok battery at best, just like the Redmi 2.

    Bottomline

At Rs. 6,999, the Yu Yuphoria is definitely a value for money smartphone. It’s the best looking budget device that you can buy right now, if the camera isn’t a priority for you.

IPL 2020: 'Big Hitters Like Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya Will Struggle,' Says Ramiz Raja

Big hitting batsmen like Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard will struggle in Indian Premier League 2020 as pitches will be spin-friendly, said Ramiz Raja

    Cricketnext Staff |September 11, 2020, 11:19 AM IST

Big hitting batsmen like Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard will struggle in Indian Premier League 2020 as pitches will be spin-friendly, according to former Pakistan player Ramiz Raja. Raja said teams with good spin depth will do well in the tournament, while 'hitters' like Chris Lynn and the Pandya brothers would struggle.

Raja's comments come even as Pollard won the Man of the Tournament award in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League, where he led his team Trinbago Knight Riders to a record fourth title. Pollard was in superb form, smashing 207 runs at a strike rate in excess of 204 from 7 innings. The CPL was largely played on spin-friendly tracks.

"I think the teams who have a good spin department will do well, that is the first thing," Raja said on the YouTube show Cric Cast. “The big-hitters will struggle. Like Lynn, Pollard or Pandya brothers (all Mumbai Indians). Hardik Pandya probably although he plays spin well. But I feel that the team selection in this IPL will be slightly different. Fast bowling will be difficult, you will see a lot of variations."

Raja also analysed that the lack of crowd in the stadiums will be a big factor for some teams as the tournament will be incomplete without spectators.

Four-time Champs, Lasith Malinga's Record Wickets and Kieron Pollard's Strike Rate - The Numbers That Define MI

"And behind closed doors, what will be the impact, because you will have to almost remain like a prisoner in a bio-secure environment and put up your best performance. So it becomes a difficult task. Because IPL without the buzz of the crowd is incomplete," Raja said.

"So big teams will be playing away from their homes where they had a lot of advantage, for e.g. Kolkata Knight Riders had an advantage of playing at the Eden Gardens where the crowd support helps them in crunch moments. Similarly, RCB plays in Bangalore, who get an advantage there. So, it will be interesting to see how they adjust themselves in neutral territory."

The IPL will begin on September 19 in UAE, with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings.

    Verdict

The pricing of the Titanium Octane Plus makes it hard to ignore, but Karbonn could have done a much better job. If you're looking for a premium build, a good display and ok performance, then the Octane Plus delivers. On the other hand, if you use your phone to click a lot of pictures, then the Panasonic P81 is a better choice, albeit about Rs 4,000 more expensive. For a lesser priced option, go for the Moto G.

Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus detailed review

The Indian market has recently been treated to a number of octa-core smartphones running on the MediaTek MT6592 chip. The Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus, which we’re reviewing today, is one of the most awaited out of all of them. The device had been unveiled some months ago, but Karbonn took quite some time in bringing it into the market. But it’s out and as usual, we took it for a spin. Here’s what we thought of it.

    Build and Design

This is definitely Karbonn’s best looking smartphone till date, and the Titanium Octane Plus, is, overall, a solidly built smartphone, albeit with a plastic body. We’ll even go out on a limb and say this is one of the best looking and built phones with plastic bodies available out there. It is a 5-inch smartphone, which has the volume rocker on the left, power on/off on the right and headphone jack and charging port on the top and bottom respectively. It is available currently in white only.

The back is rubberised plastic, which makes the device feel less plastic-ky and more like a premium smartphone. It is also ergonomically built and fits nicely in the hand and pocket, while being quite suited for single handed usage. That said, it is not as ergonomic to use as the Moto X, but isn’t uncomfortably large like many other bigger devices.

The build and design on this phone will make you feel like you’re using a premium smartphone, while you will be spending less than half of what other flagship devices cost.

    Performance and UI

Like many other octa-core smartphones in the market, this one also sports the MediaTek MT6592 processor clocked at 1.7 GHz along with the Mali 450MP4 GPU. This is the same processor as the one in the Micromax Canvas Knight and Panasonic P81, both of which are over Rs. 4,000 more expensive than the Octane Plus.

We weren’t entirely satisfied with the performance of the device and saw some lags on the device. The Titanium Octane Plus runs stock Android, which should have, theoretically, reduced the amount of lag on the smartphone. However, this is not true for the Octane Plus and its laggy interface. The experience was also below expectations when playing games like Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2, which were hit by low frame-rates. The device also started heating up within five minutes of gameplay.

Overall, the performance is average, and we expected a lot more out of this device. Going with stock Android was a good idea, but the Karbonn phone lacks something in the execution. Still, looking at the below Rs 15,000 price tag that it is available online for, we would give it some leeway.

    Camera

The Titanium Octane Plus has a 16 MP rear camera along with an 8 MP front camera. This was another disappointment as the camera gave us pictures that were looked blurry and the over-aggressive noise reduction kills most details. Frankly, there are better cameras, with lower megapixels available out there. The Panasonic P81’s 13 MP shooter for example, performs much better than this one.

If you use your phone to click a lot of pictures, then you won't like this smartphone.

    Battery

Karbonn has put in a 2,000 mAh battery on the Titanium Octane Plus, which struggles to keep up with the powerful processor inside. The device lost 21% power after watching a 1080p video on it with full brightness and WiFi. This means that the smartphone would have lasted for less than 5 hours, while the competing Panasonic P81 gave us a good 7 hours on the same test.

Under regular usage, the device requires at least two charges in the day, with another one if you end up putting it under stress.

    Conclusion

At the price Karbonn is asking, the Titanium Octane Plus had the potential to beat its competitors hands down. Overall, it is an average phone although Karbonn has done a splendid job in the build quality and looks departments. If you want a powerful smartphone that is priced below Rs 15,000, go for the Motorola Moto G. If you want a large good looking display, consider the Panasonic P81

Rough arrest of Black teen in southern Louisiana prompts internal police probe

One Lafayette officer was put on leave and two more taken of regular duties, following bowling alley confrontation.

Police in southern Louisiana put one officer on leave, removed two more from regular duty and launched an internal probe of their confrontation with two Black teens, officials said Thursday.

Bystander video appeared to show at least one officer throwing punches as Lafayette police handcuffed a young Black male Saturday night at the Acadian Lanes Bowling Alley. It wasn't immediately clear what happened before the videos showed punches being thrown.

Officers initially came to the scene answering calls that a person was in the parking lot with a gun, but they left after finding no one matching the description, Lafayette Police Sgt. Wayne Griffin told local media outlets.

When officers returned to the same parking lot 30 minutes later for an unrelated traffic stop, that's when they said they spotted that possible gun suspect, Griffin said.

Police did not identify the young men involved, but attorney Ronald S. Haley Jr. said in a statement that his two clients, 16-year-old twins, Gerard and Jabari Celestine, were the ones confronted by officers.

The responding officers handcuffed Jabari as he and his brother were waiting outside to enter the bowling alley and observing COVID-19 safety measures, according to their attorney.

"When officers arrived, they immediately handcuffed Jabari and read him his rights," Haley said in the statement.

"At that time, Gerard inquired with the police as to why his brother was being arrested. In response, officers pushed Gerard to the ground and began brutally beating him, as evidenced by the videos of the encounter."

Gerard was charged with interfering with a police investigation, resisting arrest, and battery of a police officer, while his brother Jabari was released without charges, Haley said.

The twins were not armed, according to Haley.

Lafayette police said the first teen they encountered was cooperative as officers patted him down for a weapon. But then a second teen “may have approached” the officers and “got into their personal space," according to Griffin.

“Then it turned physical,” Griffin said. “I’m not going to go into details of who swung first or anything like that.”

Local police know the twins from previous encounters, Haley said.

"At this time we are vigorously pursuing justice for our clients, who we strongly contend are victims of racial profiling and systemic racism at the hands of Lafayette police," Haley said. "To start, we want the police department to release all information and body cam footage pertinent to the events of last Saturday evening."

In a statement to NBC News on Thursday, the police department confirmed that Saturday's incident is under internal investigation and that one officer has been placed on administrative leave and the other two officers have been temporarily pulled from their regular duties.

Representatives for the local police union could not be immediately reached, via email or phone, on Friday for comment on behalf of the officers involved.

Man Who "Threatened" Sanjay Raut Has Mumbai Police Flying To Kolkata

Mumbai Police Anti-Terrorist Squad granted transit remand of Kolkata-based gym instructor who gave a death threat to Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut saying he is a "member of the Dawood Gang".

    Kolkata:

A man in Kolkata who allegedly threatened and abused Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut was arrested on Thursday night by Mumbai policemen who travelled to the Bengal capital to track him down. Palash Bose, a gym instructor, is "a member of the Dawood (Ibrahim) gang", an anti-terror squad of the Mumbai police told a court which has granted a transit remand to take him to Maharashtra.

"Palash Bose allegedly told Sanjay Raut - 'I am calling from Mumbai. I am a member of the Dawood Gang. Stay away from the Sushant Singh Rajput case else we will show you and the Maharashtra government; you will be killed'," the Chief Public Prosecutor told a magistrate in Kolkata, quoting the First Information Report.

Bose, who lives in the posh Tollygunge area of south Kolkata, was traced after he made an internet call the Sena Rajya Sabha member reportedly between September 2 and 8. He soon found the Mumbai Police at his doorstep.

He has been booked for criminal intimidation. The police have also seized two international SIM cards, one Indian SIM card and two cellphones from his home.

He claimed to be a supporter of actor Kangana Ranaut, who is engaged in bitter political row with the Shiv Sena over her attacks on the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Police over Sushant Singh Rajput's death and her comment comparing Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The Sena is furious at the actor for saying she felt unsafe in Mumbai. Just before her return to Mumbai after months at her hometown Manali, she was given Y-plus security by the central government.

On Wednesday, as she returned to Mumbai amid tight security, the Mumbai civic body partially demolished Ms Ranaut's office over alleged illegal alterations. Though the Bombay High Court later ordered a stop to the demolition, the office has been left damaged.

The actor has accused the Shiv Sena of using the Mumbai civic body to target her.

Sanjay Raut, the Sena's chief spokesperson, was on camera using a slur against her and saying she should stay out of Mumbai if she felt unsafe.

Oil Prices Slide Near 2% After Surprise U.S. Crude Stock Build

Oil prices slid near 2% on Thursday after U.S. data showed a surprise build in crude stockpiles last week related in part to ongoing reductions at refineries along the Gulf of Mexico following Hurricane Laura.

      • Last Updated: September 11, 2020, 12:42 AM IST

NEW YORK: Oil prices slid near 2% on Thursday after U.S. data showed a surprise build in crude stockpiles last week related in part to ongoing reductions at refineries along the Gulf of Mexico following Hurricane Laura.

Brent futures fell 73 cents, or 1.8%, to settle at $40.06 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 75 cents, or 2.0%, to settle at $37.30.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said crude inventories rose 2.0 million barrels last week. [EIA/S]

That confirmed the direction of the 3 million-barrel increase reported by the American Petroleum Institute (API), but was a surprise compared with the 1.3 million-barrel decrease that analysts forecast in a Reuters poll.

“Today’s crude data looked bearish … with about the only supportive element being the fact that the 2 (million-barrel) build was less than that indicated by the API,” said Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Illinois, noting prices could fall further unless Gulf of Mexico refiners fully restart soon after shutting for Hurricane Laura.

Brent and WTI futures dropped to their lowest since mid June earlier this week and have remained in oversold territory over the past several days. Brent’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) was under 30 for a fifth straight day for the first time since March.

In China, Bank ANZ said oil imports were likely to level off as independent refineries reach their maximum quotas.

In a further bearish sign, leading commodity traders were booking tankers to store crude oil and diesel.

The rising stockpiles come ahead of a meeting on Sept. 17 of the market monitoring panel of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and allies including Russia, a group known as OPEC+.

“Despite the recent slide in oil prices, we think that the OPEC+ leadership will continue to direct its efforts towards securing better compliance rather than pushing for deeper cuts at this stage,” RBC analysts said.

Karbonn Titanium Mach One S310 detailed review

Over the years, there have been many smartphone makers that have been ‘inspired’ by Apple’s design philosophy for the iPhone. Samsung was when it started its Android smartphone business and most recently, Lenovo has was too, with the Sisley S90 smartphone. Indian manufacturers have been inspired as well, with Karbonn perhaps being the most recent of the lot. We’re talking about the Karbonn Titanium Mach One of course.

The phone draws a lot of ‘inspiration’ from Apple’s iPhone 6 design, but is available at a tenth of the iPhone’s price. Of course, that means no metal on the phone and only the look has been drawn from the iPhone. Unfortunately though, whenever Apple has talked about design, it has also talked about performance and features along with it. Looks alone is never enough for a smartphone, or any gadget for that matter. Let us explain why.

      Build and Design

The Titanium Mach One doesn’t leave much to complain about in the design department. It is not as thin as the iPhone 6, but the rounded edges, make it feel good in the hand and it is sufficiently light. That said, if you're expecting an exact replica, then this isn't it. It's a replica that fits the Rs. 6,990 price tag.

The overall build quality is satisfactory for a budget device and the dimensions are just enough to make it comfortable to hold. Of course, if you’re expecting an iPhone-like finish then you’ll be disappointed. It’s a reasonably well built device for its price range, but doesn’t have the high-end finishing of the iPhone 6. This is best visible in the bottom speaker grills, which lack the finesse and look more like holes dug into the body forcibly.

Karbonn Titanium Mach One (Left), iPhone 6 (right)

The design elements will not give you much to complain about, except that the plastic textured back attracts a lot of dust, which is bad, especially for the white version of the phone. Moreover, it is somewhat of a fingerprint magnet, which is another issue. Overall though, it's a pleasing design, even if not an original one.

      Display

The 4.7 inch 720p display on the Mach One is good enough in terms of general appearance. It lacks the premium feel when you touch it though and is quite fingerprint intensive. It feels sticky and low grade. Also, the display is quite dim, enough to be a problem when using the phone in bright sunlight, especially when coupled with fingerprints after long term usage. Overall, the display can be considered passable at best..

Karbonn hasn’t changed much in terms of the UI. The interface on the Mach One is essentially stock Android, with a swipe to the right function to unlock, some minor changes to the app drawer and a clear all button in the task manager. There’s nothing worth mentioning on the UI front.

      Performance

The Titanium Mach One runs on a 1.3 GHz MediaTek quad-core SoC, which doesn’t match up to its competition. The device is well behind the Lenovo A6000, let along the likes of the Yu Yureka and Xiaomi Redmi Note. The benchmark scores for the device is below the Lenovo A6000 and much behind the slightly higher priced Yu Yureka.

      Battery

While the Titanium Mach One was weak in other areas, it’s biggest weakness lies in the battery life. Simply put, the battery doesn’t last long enough to run a two hour long 1080p movie completely. In our battery test, the phone lasted just 1.7 hours, which is the lowest score we’ve ever got.

      Camera

The camera also is below par, taking average shots in good light conditions, while low light shots were very weak. The auto focus on the device is slow compared to its competitors and images often lack proper focus.

      Bottomline

There’s a reason why simply copying a design is not enough to make a good smartphone. There’s a lot that goes into making devices today and the Titanium Mach One is one of the worst that we’ve seen so far. So, with all of the above in mind, if you were planning to buy this smartphone, then don’t. You have other, much better options in the Lenovo A6000 and even the newly launched Moto E, which is coming to India soon.

Exclusive: Government holds discussion on tax breaks for hospitality sector to revive demand

Tax breaks may be in the offing for the sector which could do with a boost after a punishing spell during the lockdown

The government is holding discussions about the possibility of offering tax breaks for a specific period to restaurants and the hospitality sector to revive demand in an industry that took a severe beating in the last few months, a senior official told Moneycontrol.

The Indian hospitality sector has been among those hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdowns  as restrictions on movement and hygiene requirements kept people indoors and averse to travel or eating out.

"The problem is we also have to see whether people would be willing to eat out now. It's an evolving situation. Now that things are all opening up, we would be able to assess in a few months whether people are warming up to eating out like before," the official, who did not wish to be named, said.

The government would be in a position to announce tax breaks in two-three months after assessing how the demand situation picks up in these few months, the official added.

      COVID-19 Vaccine

      Frequently Asked Questions

      How does a vaccine work?

A vaccine works by mimicking a natural infection. A vaccine not only induces immune response to protect people from any future COVID-19 infection, but also helps quickly build herd immunity to put an end to the pandemic. Herd immunity occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. The good news is that SARS-CoV-2 virus has been fairly stable, which increases the viability of a vaccine.

How many types of vaccines are there?

There are broadly four types of vaccine — one, a vaccine based on the whole virus (this could be either inactivated, or an attenuated [weakened] virus vaccine); two, a non-replicating viral vector vaccine that uses a benign virus as vector that carries the antigen of SARS-CoV; three, nucleic-acid vaccines that have genetic material like DNA and RNA of antigens like spike protein given to a person, helping human cells decode genetic material and produce the vaccine; and four, protein subunit vaccine wherein the recombinant proteins of SARS-COV-2 along with an adjuvant (booster) is given as a vaccine.

What does it take to develop a vaccine of this kind?

Vaccine development is a long, complex process. Unlike drugs that are given to people with a diseased, vaccines are given to healthy people and also vulnerable sections such as children, pregnant women and the elderly. So rigorous tests are compulsory. History says that the fastest time it took to develop a vaccine is five years, but it usually takes double or sometimes triple that time.

The government will probably take a leaf out of the UK, which slashed value added tax on food, accommodation and attractions to 5 percent from 20 percent for a period of six months until January 12, 2021.

"We are studying the model that the UK has adopted and will see if something like that is possible to do here. The focus now is how to revive demand," the official said.

While lockdown restrictions have been eased considerably across the country, the months-long closures since the end of March have taken a toll and demand and growth have suffered in consequence. India's gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the April-June quarter contracted 23.9 percent, the steepest drop since records began, against a growth of 5.2 percent in the same period last fiscal.

The Indian economy was experiencing a slowdown even before the pandemic began, growing a mere 4.2 percent in FY20.

To tide over the economic fallout of the pandemic and the lockdown, the government in May announced a nearly Rs 21 lakh crore stimulus package.

"The focus before was to de-clog supply side bottlenecks. Now it would be reoriented to see what can be done to revive demand," the official said.

An expert panel appointed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) submitted its report on a resolution framework for stressed assets hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. The panel, led by veteran banker KV Kamath, recommended financial ratios for 26 sectors that lending institutions can follow while forming a resolution framework. the central bank broadly approved the guidelines.

The 26 sectors specified by the panel are power, construction, iron and steel manufacturing, roads, real estate, trading wholesale, textiles, chemicals, consumer durables/FMCG, non-ferrous metals, pharma, logistics, gems and jewellery, cement, auto components, hotels, mining, plastic products manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, auto dealership, aviation, sugar, port and port services, shipping, building materials, and corporate retail outlets.

Centre Asks States To Ensure No Restriction Is Imposed On Movement Of Medical Oxygen

In a letter to states and union territories (UTs), Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has emphasised that availability of adequate and uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen is an important pre-requisite for managing moderate and severe cases of COVID-19, the ministry said in a statement.

Centre Asks States To Ensure No Restriction Is Imposed On Movement Of Medical Oxygen

Centre reiterated the importance of oxygen in hospitals for management of critical COVID-19 patients

      New Delhi:

No restriction should be imposed on inter-state movement of medical oxygen, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday, while strongly reinforcing that it is the responsibility of every state and Union Territory to ensure hospitalised COVID-19 patients receive oxygen.

The ministry said it has come to its knowledge that a few states are trying to curb free inter-state movement of oxygen supplies by exercising provisions under various Acts and also mandating manufacturers or suppliers in their jurisdiction to restrict oxygen supplies to only hospitals of the state.

In view of this, the health ministry has reiterated the critical importance of oxygen in hospitals for management of critical COVID-19 patients, it said.

In a letter to states and union territories (UTs), Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has emphasised that availability of adequate and uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen is an important pre-requisite for managing moderate and severe cases of COVID-19, the ministry said in a statement.

Mr Bhushan has urged states and UTs to ensure that no restriction is imposed on the movement of medical oxygen between them, it said.

It has been strongly reinforced that it is every state's responsibility to ensure that every hospitalised COVID-19 patient receives oxygen, the ministry said.

"It has been again brought to their notice that medical oxygen constitutes an essential public health commodity and any impediment in the supplies of medical oxygen in the country may critically impact the management of patients suffering from COVID-19 disease in other parts of the country," it said.

"Moreover, some of the major oxygen manufacturers/suppliers already have existing supply agreements with hospitals in various states with a legal obligation to fulfil such agreements," it said.

The ministry said that adequate supply of oxygen throughout the country has enabled effective clinical care of hospitalised moderate and severe cases, in conjunction with other measures.

The adopted host of strategies have actively resulted in rising recovery rate and steadily declining case fatality rate (1.67 per cent currently), the ministry underlined.

It said as on date, less than 3.7 per cent of active patients are on oxygen support.

The Centre-led COVID management strategy is based on standard of care treatment guidelines.

These guidelines have ensured uniform and standardised quality of medical care in all COVID facilities, including hospitals, the statement said.

For moderate and severe cases, adequate oxygen support, appropriate and timely administration of anti-coagulants and widely available and inexpensive corticosteroids, in accordance with protocol, can be considered to be the mainstay of COVID-19 therapy, it said.

India's COVID-19 caseload mounted to  45,62,414 and the number of deaths climbed to 76,271 with a record 96,551 infections and 1,209 fatalities being reported in a day, while the recoveries have surged to 35,42,663, ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares defeated Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic to win the US Open men's doubles title.

      • Last Updated: September 11, 2020, 1:23 PM IST

Croatia’s Mate Pavic and Brazil’s Bruno Soares captured the US Open men’s doubles crown with a 7-5 6-3 win over eighth seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Nikola Mektic of Croatia on Thursday.

In their first Grand Slam men’s doubles final as a team, Pavic did damage with his powerful serve while Soares did well to force their opponents into difficult shots and they sealed the win when Mektic sent a backhand volley into the net.

“That’s what we practise for and that’s what we were tying to do during those five months off, working for this moment,” Soares, who won the Australian Open and U.S. Open men’s doubles titles in 2016 with Jamie Murray, said during the trophy presentation.

A key moment in the match came with Mektic serving at 5-6 15-40 in the first set when Koolhof missed a forehand volley that would have forced a tiebreak. Pavic and Soares went on to grab the next three points to close out the set.

The Croatian-Brazilian duo’s road to the final was far from routine as they rallied from a break down in the third set of their first-round clash and then in the second round had to stand tall as their opponents tried to serve for the match.

“We got through tough moments throughout the week,” said Pavic, who won the 2018 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Oliver Marach. “Very happy to be here lifting the title, great tournament.”

      Verdict

Firefox 4 is one of the most significant updates to the browser in many ways. Firefox 4 brings some of the great new features that are unique to the browser, while still making it competitive in terms of performance. Firefox 4 also bring support for the latest web standards. This release not only makes Firefox up-to-date, but in fact pushes it ahead of the current browser generation.

      BUY Mozilla Firefox 4

      Mozilla Firefox 4 detailed review

We have noticed Firefox progress slowly from the Firefox 3.7 days to now (there was originally supposed to be a Firefox 3.7 between 3.6 and 4.0), seeing each piece of the plan fall into place. Is Firefox 4.0 everything Mozilla expected it to become? Perhaps not, but as the biggest change yet to come in the history of the browser, it is no less significant.

Firefox 4 will also probably be the last major change in the history of the browser. Mozilla has recently decided to move Firefox to a faster release cycle like that of Google Chrome. Why you may ask? Are they just trying to copy Google Chrome? Is this a war of version numbers? No!

A good idea is good no matter the source. Releasing versions faster means users get new features in smaller, frequent doses rather than one bundle after a long time. Firefox 3.6 released over a year ago. At that time it was not far behind Google Chrome in JavaScript performance, while by the time Google Chrome 9 came out it was 1/3rd the speed. I have used the nightly builds of Firefox a lot, and a number of improvements in Firefox 4 have been stable for quite a while. If Mozilla has released new versions of Firefox as they came, they would have made the browser much more competitive.

Another point of contention here is that these releases are labelled as Firefox 5, 6, 7 while Mozilla could as easily have called them Firefox 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, each shipping on schedule. In such a case though, there would still be a concept of major and minor releases

We have covered quite a few of these changes as the browser developed over the course of 13 beta versions, now its time again for a recap, and a look at the final product.

      A fresh new look

While the browser's UI was refreshed with each new release, the basic UI remained the same till Firefox 3.6, the same locations for tabs, similar menus etc. Individual aspects such as the download manager, and the add-on manager went through bigger UI changes though.

      Firefox 1.5

      Firefox 2.0

      Firefox 3.6

      Firefox 4.0

Current trends dictate a smaller UI footprint, as websites take over many of the functions that we have usually reserved for browsers. This is especially true of web applications, which usually remain open in the background as people browse the web. Once such as website it opened, you usually have little need for a back, forward and reload buttons, or even the address bar. Firefox 4 optimizes UI space for the content that need to be displayed.

      No menus

While menus do have numerous features that cant be exposed on the UI, those features are diminishing in their use. The few options that people use most have been moved into one unified menu with all useful options within reach.

The new Firefox menu has two columns, putting options in closer proximity of the your mouse when you click the Firefox button. Furthermore, the old menu-based shortcut keys still work. Clicking Al F will bring up the menu from hiding and open the file menu.

Menus are shown by default on Linux, however hiding them is a simple matter of right-clicking the menu-bar and deselecting "Menu bar".

Firefox 4.0 on OpenSUSE 11.4 (default)
Firefox 4.0 on OpenSUSE 11.4 (menu disabled)

While the menus have been replaced by the Firefox button, there seems to be no keyboard shortcut for opening the Firefox menu. Oh, well, the old menu still works.

      Tabs on Top

Tabs-on-top are a much better paradigm than the older tabs below the location bar system. Tabs on top give a clearer impression that the location bar, and browser controls apply to the current tab, and are manipulating the content they are associated with rather than the browser as a whole.

This also makes it possible for hide the address bar for pages that don't really have an address, such as the add-on manager page.

If you maximise Firefox on Windows, it will move your tabs to the titlebar, further compacting the interface.

      No bookmarks bar by default

Adding bookmarks was simplified quite a bit in Firefox 3 with the introduction of the "star" button in the location-bar. Clicking on the star instantly bookmarks the URL, and clicking on it again lets you add tags, change the folder etc. Firefox 3 also introduced searching through your bookmarks from the location bar.

With these two features, you didn't need to click on a bookmark or access it from the bookmark menu. just start typing the title or URL of the website and Firefox will find it for you. Many people wont even need to use the bookmark bar because of this and it will just end up taking space on the screen.

The old bookmarks menu (which is also hidden by default on Windows) has a direct replacement in the form on a Bookmark button, which on clicking shows you the good old bookmarks menu, along with an option to enable the bookmark bar. So if you are one who does use the bookmark bar, bringing it back is a simple matter.

      No status bar

This is one change that has ticked a lot of people off; the good old status bar is no more. The status bar was useful for, as its name suggests, displaying the status of the page however add-ons also used it to display their icons.

Mozilla has ensured that no information is lost here, by accommodating the status and add-on icons in other places. For the status messages (connecting, ready etc) you have the new animated icons. Although the exact animations are theme and OS specific, the connecting and loading statuses are now depicted by revolving icons, with the connecting icon revolving counterclockwise, and the loading icon rotating clockwise. If you are reading this article on Firefox, you can see the animated icons below, on other browsers they will appear stationary.

      • Connecting
      • Loading

For those who like a little more detail, like the address of the website Firefox is connecting to, Mozilla has implemented the kind of hovering status bar that is there in Google Chrome. Essentially the bar only pops up when Firefox is connecting and hides away when done.

Additionally, if you move your mouse over the hovering status display it doges over to the other side. It's not as charming as it isn't original, but it is a good feature nonetheless.

Mozilla has also added the add-on bar just for them to display icons. These bar is originally hidden, saving further screen space, until you install an add-on that uses it.

      New add-on manager

The add-on manger has seen a significant overhaul, and not just in looks, but in features as well. The Firefox 3 add-on manger allowed one to search for add-ons straight from the add-on manager, which was great, but of limited use. Chances are if you are installing a new add-on, you will need more details than can be afforded by such a small window. Unless you already know which extension to install, you'll probably use the web interface.

The new UI doesn't suffer from this defect, as you can search for locally installed add-ons in addition to add-ons from Mozilla's database. When you search for an add-on you can see much more detail now, and can even click on the "more" button to see further detail about the add-on, including a link to the add-on's homepage, author's page on the Mozilla, and its reviews. If the add-on author asks for it, a contribution button will also appear. The details page also includes the download count and rating which can be useful indicators for an add-on's quality.

      Firefox 4.0 Add-on manager

      Firefox 4.0 Add-on search

      Firefox 4.0 Add-on details page

One annoying aspect of the Firefox add-on system is that it downloads an add-on before asking for your permission to install it. This can mean wasted bandwidth on an add-on you would have declined to install anyway.

      Other subtle UI changes

There are a number of other subtle changes that come with Firefox 4, such as:

      Features galore

While the UI has been minimized substantially, the number of features on the other hand, have only gone up. Two of the most popular and important features to come with Firefox 4 are Sync, and Panorama, so let us discuss them first.

      Firefox Sync

Firefox Sync has gone from being an add-on for Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 to one of the most important features of the new browser version. Google Chrome and Opera already offer Syncing as part of the browser, and now Firefox does as well. In fact Firefox goes a few steps further. For one, like Opera, Mozilla has a Mobile version of Firefox available that also supports Sync.

Firefox Sync allows for synchronizing your bookmarks, passwords, preferences, history, and tabs. Since Firefox draws on your browsing history and bookmarks while providing suggestions this means that two Firefox installations synced using Firefox Sync will show the same results for the same text entered. This can save a lot of time as one you use Firefox for a while it gets quite good at guessing which website you want to visit when you start entering some test in the URL bar.

Password sync is of obvious utility if you have passwords stored on Firefox. You may feel insecure in having your passwords synced online, however Mozilla has taken privacy quite seriously, and encrypts all your data on your computer before sending it using you key. Even if someone gained access to your data, they would not be able to decrypt it without your sync key. Not even Mozilla can decrypt your data. Of course you still need to take precaution on your own computers to keep your data safe.

Setting up sync is simple, and just requires you enter an email address and password for sync. Firefox Sync no longer requires you to enter your own Sync key that is used to encrypt your data, instead a secure key is auto-generated for you, which you can then save in a safe place. Instead of typing your account and key details on each computer or device you set up, Firefox Sync generates a 12 character code on the new device you wish to include in the sync pool. This key needs to be entered in a device already connected to sync, and your new device will be connected!

      Firefox Sync new account creation

      Firefox Sync settings

One gripe I have with Firefox Sync is its poor Tab synchronization implementation. While the tabs sync just fine, the only way to access tabs from another device is from the rather light dropdown on the right-most of your tab strip, or to use the History menu — which if you recall is no longer displayed by default. This then takes you to a page from where once can search tabs opened on other computers and click on them to open them here. In this sense iti is a glorified bookmark sync. I expected better integration on the Firefox home page, perhaps even the ability to restore remote sessions. Or at least access to tabs directly from History in Firefox menu.

      Panorama

Firefox Panorama, or Tab Groups is one of Firefox's features that sets is apart from all others. Panorama introduces an entirely new way of managing tabs that is comparable to the concept of workspaces / Virtual desktops on Linux.

Essentially, you can divide your tabs into multiple groups based on whatever parameter you want — usually it is important that they are all related to the same task. This is accomplished through a rich graphical UI that shows an overview of opened tabs. One can click and drag in a free area to create a new group, and can visually drag and drop tabs into a group. Groups can also be named, in which case it is possible to right click a tab and use the menu options to move it to a different group.

Firefox was already quite good at handling tabs even in the hundreds, but this feature takes it to another level!.

When you have a particular tab group active, you will only see tabs from that group, the rest will be hidden away. This makes it easy to manage with hundreds of tabs where you focus on only a few at a time. Once you activate Panorama, You can also start typing the title of a tab to highlight matches and you can open a matched tab by simply pressing enter.

While Tab Groups / Panorama is a brilliant concept, the idiom "out of sight, out of mind" seems appropriate here. Mozilla has not given enough indication in the browser UI of where there are other tabs in other groups, and no listing of groups outside of Panorama is available. Furthermore Panorama is window-specific, and doesn't allow you to organize your tabs access windows. It would be great if one could move entire groups to a new window or from one window to another. After using the browser for quite a while I once found myself with Firefox eating up too much memory, and on checking realised that I has nearly 40 tabs opened in hidden groups!

Firefox requires you to manage groups yourself, and there is no way to have websites automatically fill into groups. Additionally the default shortcut key for Panorama is Ctrl Shift E which is a rather annoying combo to be pressing frequently, and there is no way to change it.

      App Tabs

Firefox 4.0 AppTabs on Linux. Twitter has updates

We might as well have listed these under UI improvements, as currently App Tabs provide few features. This feature is pretty much the same as pinned tabs on Chrome and Opera, in that they allow set certain websites apart, which are then collapsed to the left side of the tab bar.

The tabs collapse to showing just the icon of the website, thus saving space in the titlebar.

App Tabs are useful for tabs that aren't transient, but those you generally keep opened all the time. Earlier you would be bound to lose such tabs amidst other less important tabs.Creating App Tabs is as simple as right clicking a tab and selecting "Pin as App Tab".

Other than their appearance, App Tabs are treated a little differently than normal tabs. For one, they cannot be accidentally closed using keyboard shortcuts for closing tabs. App Tabs do not participate in Tab Groups, instead they are a part of all groups as they remain even as you switch groups.

App Tabs will also glow when there is new content in the page, so you can get an indication when there is new mail in Gmail, or new tweets in Twitter. Any links you open from App Tabs will open in a normal tab instead of changing the location of the App Tab. Finally, App Tabs are restored at startup whether you restore your session or not.

      Restartless add-ons

As other browsers have caught up support for Add-ons, they have been able to provide restart-less experience while installing add-ons.

Firefox add-ons can range from small hacks that turn a feature on or off to those that completely change the browsing experience, and here is where Firefox still has a huge lead. As other browsers are adding API's that reach deeper and deeper into the browser, Firefox is completely laid bare, with nearly everything open to change.

Such extensibility comes at a price though, as touching that deep into the browser and changing something isn't easy to do while the application is still running. However, a majority of add-ons don't need, nor take advantage of such access.

Just as Firefox made it possible to install lightweight themes, or Personas, without requiring a restart of the browser, now Firefox has made it possible for Firefox add-on developers to develop add-ons in a way that they can be installed without a restart.

Some add-ons will still require a restart, especially add-ons such as Greasemonkey, NoScript etc. however numerous others can be made restart-less, and it is only a matter of time before even the more complex add-ons take advantage of this feature. Mozilla now marks add-ons that are restart-less with a "No restart required" tag so such addons are easy to identify on the site.

Mozilla is also developing an SDK for creating Firefox extensions, which is much easier to learn since it uses web standard technologies such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS rather than messing about with XUL. Add-ons created using this SDK are restart-less by default.

      Some smaller new features

It is often some of the smaller features that end up saving more of your time. For example, how many times have you downloaded a small file using Firefox's download manager and then spent time looking for it in your download? Firefox 4 has a solution to this problem. Now you can simply drag and drop files from the download anager to anyplace on the desktop, a folder or even other application windows.

      • Tab switching from location bar — When you start typing in the location bar, Firefox now allows you to switch to existing tabs that match your entry. For example, if you open Facebook once, and then after using the browser a while you forget you already have it open, Firefox will indicate that Facebook is already open, and will let you switch to it.
      • Scroll through Tabs — Firefox doesn't keep decreasing the size to tabs till they collapse into near-nothingness like Google Chrome does, instead it lets you scroll horizontally through tabs. Of course this can get annoying if you have a few dozen tabs and have to press a button to move through tabs. Firefox 4 lets you use your mouse's scroll feature to quickly move through the list of tabs.
      • WebConsole — well I'm reluctant to call this a small feature, but it is limited impact on those who don't want to get a look at what's going on under the hood. The WebConsole is a developer tool
      • Paste and Go, Search and Go — if you copy a URL or search phrase, in older versions of Firefox, you would have to first paste the URL in the location bar or the search term in the search bar and then pres enter to execute the action. Since it is quite likely that one will want to open a URL after pasting it in the location bar, or search for somethign you paste in the search box, these new options can be quite useful.
      • Do not Track — Firefox now includes an option that lets you opt out of being tracked by websites. However this feature is of limited use until it is respected by such parties.
      • Multi-touch support — If you're one of the few using Windows 7 with a multi-touch input device, you will now be able to use gestures with Firefox.

      The Engine behind it all

Firefox 4 brings the second version of the Gecko 2.0 engine that powers the Firefox web experience.

Firefox 3.5 introduced the all new TraceMonkey JIT engine that boosted the speed for some kinds of JavaScript code segments by huge amounts. Unfortunately, when it didn't work, the execution of JavaScript fell back to a much slower method. In Firefox 4 Mozilla introduces the new JägerMonkey engine — with a name annoying enough we have to copy paste it every time — that uses a method JIT instead of a tracing JIT. So now Firefox either goes ultra fast with the TraceMonkey, or super fast with JägerMonkey. The result, Firefox has a huge boost in JavaScript performance.

This, however is not the only performance bump that comes with Firefox 4. It also features hardware acceleration. This means Firefox 4 will take advantage of your graphics card if you have a supported card and drivers. On Windows Firefox uses Direct2D and Direct3D on Windows to accelerate web content. On Mac it uses OpenGL. Linux users are mostly left out due to problems with drivers on Linux. However hardware acceleration seems to be enabled on Linux for machines that have supported hardware and drivers (currently NVIDIA cards with proprietary drivers).

Other than performance, Firefox 4 brings the browser up to date on the latest web standards:

      • HTML5 Parser — Firefox 4 includes the new HTML5 parser, which is an important part of the web standard. It allows, among other things, support for SVG embedded in HTML.
      • Audio API — Firefox 4 adds support for a curently non-standard (but proposed) API for accessing and manipulating RAW audio data, making it possible for the future of the web to include HTML-based audio editing tools.
      • HTML5 forms — Firefox supports many of the new form elements added in the HTML5 specification
      • WebM video — Google's new open specification video format for the web is supported in Firefox with this version
      • CSS3 — Some great new features such as box-shadows, border radius, transitiona dn transformations are supported with Firefox 4 allowing one to experience a richer, animated web built on web standards — and without JavaScript.
      • Web Fonts — Web fonts are very important for proper typography on the web, and Firefox supports this standard with support for WOFF, TrueType and OpenType fonts
      • Geolocation — Firefox 4 supports this new standard feature that will allow websites to access your location information with you permission.

      In Conclusion

Firefox has made up for its lag behind other browsers since Firefox 3.6, and in many ways excelled them with this release. For power-browsers who need to have may tabs open at the same time, Firefox is an obvious choice. So is it for those who need ultimate customizability in terms of add-ons and themes.

No other browser gets close when it comes to how much Firefox can be customized. In a few easy steps you can make it look like Firefox 3.6 again, if you really believe that UI was better. Firefox now allows more customizability in the tab-bars and toolbars than ever, and the following image will show you just how far you can go:

Firefox 4.0 minimal chrome <30 pixels!

Firefox 4 is not without its shortcomings though, some I have mentioned through the review. Some of the features still feel incomplete, even if they were designed to be like this. Panorama useful as it is, doesn't feel like a full part of the browser, and neither does Sync.

Don't get us wrong, both features work very well, it is just that they could have been improved in many subtle ways. Hopefully with Firefox's new fast release cycle we will see these improvements come sooner rather than later.

In fact while we found that developers have already created add-ons that counter some of these flaws, such as a way to customize Panorama's shortcut, and clearer access to Panorama groups, but these solutions still have to come from within considering that there are only so many add-ons you can install before you start impacting the performance of the browser.

Firefox 4 is a serious contender in this latest generation of browser wars, and one of the best browsers on this generation. Mozilla has worked hard to bring it to its current place as the second most popular browser in the World, and we don't see it slipping just yet.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Max detailed review

As a reviewer, I've stood witness to Samsung's evolution in the smartphone market. From low-end devices like the Galaxy Y to the class-leading Galaxy S8, Samsung has done a lot. It's rise to a market leading position came somewhat easily, but remaining there has proved to be quite difficult. Believe it or not, a large number of consumers trust Samsung, even after the Note 7 debacle. But while devices like the Galaxy S8 and Note series may make sense overseas, India is a different monster altogether, and the Galaxy J series is arguably more important, including the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max.

In a lot of ways, the Galaxy J7 Max is the epitomy of Samsung's evolution, while retaining some of the things the company isn't liked for. It doesn't bring you class-leading specifications, but it's evidently a result of extensive market research. It will do best in retail stores, where you touch and feel the device, you take it for a short spin even, and make your decision on the spot. And if you indeed do that, the Galaxy J7 Max would convince you against many other devices. Of course, that doesn't meant Samsung isn't selling the Galaxy J7 Max online, which is probably why you're reading this review.

      Build and Design

As mentioned above, Samsung is playing the consumer's emotion here. The J7 Max is about how the phone feels, rather than what it is on paper. To that end, it has a unibody metallic design, rounded near the corners, but more or less slab-like. It "feels" premium, more so than the Moto G5 Plus, it's chief competitor. It's built solidly with no creaks or crevices to speak of. As far as the sub-20k market is concerned, the Galaxy J7 Max is up to industry standards today.

On the other hand, it has a large footprint and is meant for big phone lovers. You will also need large pockets to carry it around, while your grip will have to shift often when using the phone with one hand. From a build and design purview, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max is no better than the best in this range, but no worse either. I personally find the looks plain, which isn't necessarily bad.

The power button is on the left and falls below your thumb, as long you have medium to large hands. You will be shifting your grip to reach the volume rocket, that lies on the upper half of the right. The phone is slightly curved near the rear edges, with stylised plastic strips on the top and bottom. Samsung's oval fingerprint sensor-cum home button is on the front, with touch-based back and recents keys on either side.

      Display

The slightly more expensive Galaxy J7 Pro has an AMOLED display panel, which makes one wonder why Samsung couldn't do the same on the J7 Max. That said, the company is using one of its other technologies for the 5.7 inch panel on this device. It's a TFT display, using Samsung's PLS technology.

Plane-Line Switching (PLS) follows almost the same principles as IPS panels, which allows Samsung to avoid the viewing angle issues commonly associated with TFT displays. Black levels are up to IPS standards, although they're far behind AMOLED panels. The Galaxy J7 Max's display looks very slightly washed out, with decent colour saturation and black levels. The glass feels premium to touch, but you could indeed get a much better display, on phones like the Moto G5 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and many others.

Also, I faced some touch issues with the Galaxy J7 Max, similar to what we noticed on the Galaxy A5 earlier. The phone sometimes doesn't respond to touches, requiring you to tap an app/button repeatedly. While the display isn't the J7 Max's strong suit, it's actually better than every TFT panel I've tested recently.

      UI

Spec-to-spec the Galaxy J7 Max would fall behind almost every phone in this price range. But even so, it has a huge advantage over phones produced by Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo and almost all others, barring Motorola. The Galaxy J7 Max runs on Android Nougat out-of-the-box, and is one of the few phones in this price, that runs on Nougat. Samsung's history with updates on its budget devices isn't great, but by the looks of it, no one in this price range is interested in giving consumers an up to date operating system. The fact that the Galaxy J7 Max at least runs on Nougat makes it more trustworthy than any phone, except the Moto G5 Plus.

The Galaxy J7 Max also has the same UI as on the Galaxy S8, minus the capacitive navigation keys and edge functions of course. The UI looks and feels good and premium, but it has a sluggish feel to it. That's possibly because of a weaker chipset than the Snapdragon 625, and one does wish Samsung could have done better here.

The Galaxy J7 Max also has Samsung Pay Mini, a stripped down version of Samsung Pay, running on the Galaxy A and S series. You can link your PayTM and UPI accounts to this, and make payments at places that support the same. Samsung Pay still has a ways to go before it's adopted in India, but it's good to see Samsung provide such a service in its cheaper phones.

The social camera feature gives you access to some filters and allows instant sharing via Facebook and WhatsApp. It's a gimmick that some may like, but truthfully, don't we have enough filters everywhere already?

      Performance

For me, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max's downfall is thanks to the MediaTek Helio P20. The chipset is simply not powerful enough to take on the Snapdragon 625 or its more powerful counterparts. The Galaxy J7 Max is a slow phone and it doesn’t feel as snappy as phones today should. At nearly Rs. 18,000, you should be able buy something faster.

App load times are high and the phone doesn’t feel responsive enough on regular usage. Apps like Facebook, Twitter and many others feel slow. Games run at playable frame rates, but in-game menus and loading times will be higher than reasonable. Games like Injustice 2 are frustrating because of how often you have to wait at a loading screen.

While there are no heating issues on the device, you don’t expect excessive heating on such performance any way. The Galaxy J7 Max is an Android phone after all, so you can expect it to keep getting slower over time.

      Camera

If performance is its downfall, the camera is where the Galaxy J7 Max redeems itself. It’s got a 13MP rear camera on the back and f/1.7 aperture. The UI remains the same as other Samsung phones running on Nougat, and image quality is amongst the best in this price range.

The Galaxy J7 Max takes great photos regardless of how the light conditions are. White balance is good for the most part, and the Galaxy J7 Max produces well detailed photos as well. You see shades of Samsung’s low light algorithms (from the Galaxy S8) here, with brighter than usual photos under low light.

Comparing to the Moto G5 Plus (our top camera in this price range), the Galaxy J7 Max fares very well. It’s actually better in low light at times, producing slightly brighter photos. The two phones are mostly at par in most other cases. The Moto G5 Plus (review) tends to produce slightly warmer photos, whereas the Galaxy J7 Max is more towards the cooler side.

Low Light: Samsung Galaxy J7 Max (Left) vs Moto G5 Plus (Right)

The Galaxy J7 Max has issues focusing on subjects when they’re too close to the camera, so the Moto G5 Plus is often the pick for this. But other than that, the two cameras are essentially of the same quality. They even have some of the same issues, with slow focus speeds in low light. The Galaxy J7 Max is the faster one at processing though. It’s also better at video stabilisation than the G5 Plus.

      Samsung Galaxy J7 Max
Samsung Galaxy J7 Max Camera Samples

      Battery

Given the phone’s large footprint, a 3300 mAh battery seems little by today’s standards. Our regular battery test wasn’t compatible with this device, but regular usage tests suggest that the phone will easily last a full work-day. I could stream HD video on the J7 Max for over 7 hours at a time, while gaming didn’t drain the battery very easily either. You can expect 14-16 hours worth of battery life from the Galaxy J7 Max.

How it stacks up against competition

The Moto G5 Plus is indeed the chief competitor for the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max, and compared to that device, the phone is indeed inferior. While the two phones have similar cameras, the Moto phone is faster, has a smoother stock Android Nougat software and better display.

The Galaxy J7 Max has a better camera than most other smartphones in this range, but the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (review), Coolpad Cool 1 (review) and Honor 6X (review) are considerably faster than this device. That leads us to the conclusion for this review.

      Bottomline

There are two reasons to buy the Galaxy J7 Max — a great camera and Android Nougat. Unfortunately for Samsung, those are also the reasons for purchasing the Moto G5 Plus. Motorola’s phone is also faster and a few thousand bucks cheaper. So, while the Moto G5 Plus is indeed the best buy in this price range, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Max is worth considering if updated software and a great camera are your priorities.

NEW DELHI: Twenty four candidates scored 100 percentile in the Paper 1 of Joint Entrance Examination-mains (JEE-mains). The National Testing Agency announced the results and final merit list from the performances of January and September cycle results on Friday night.

Eight candidates from Telangana features in the top 24, followed by five from Delhi, four from Rajasthan, three from Andhra Pradesh two from Haryana, and one each from Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The JEE (mains) for admission to engineering colleges was conducted in January 202 and from September 1 to 6, amid stringent precautions and social distancing measures in view of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Paper 1 is for admission to BTech/ BE programmes in IITs, NITs and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).

Based on the results of the JEE-Mains Paper 1 and Paper 2, the top 2.45 lakh candidates will be eligible to appear for the JEE-Advanced exam, which is a one-stop exam to get admission into the 23 premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). JEE-Advanced is scheduled to take place on September 27.

Staggered entry and exit for candidates, sanitisers at the gate, distribution of masks and maintaining social distancing as candidates queued up, were among the scenes witnessed at the exam centres across the country.

The exam had been postponed twice in view of Covid-19 pandemic.

Increasing the number of examination centres, alternate seating plans, fewer candidates per room and staggered entry and exit are among the steps the National Testing Agency had taken for safely conducting the crucial exam.

While the governments of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh had assured students that they will provide transportation to candidates, a group of IIT alumni and students had also launched a portal to provide transport facilities to exam centres for the candidates in need.
There had been a growing chorus for postponing JEE-Mains and medical entrance exam NEET amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid a spurt in the number of Covid-19 cases, saying a "precious year" of students cannot be wasted and life has to go on.

Oil Falls On U.S. Market Slide, Unexpected Rise In Inventories

Oil prices fell further on Friday and were on track for a second weekly fall after U.S. stock markets tumbled and U.S. stockpiles rose unexpectedly.

LONDON: Oil prices fell further on Friday and were on track for a second weekly fall after U.S. stock markets tumbled and U.S. stockpiles rose unexpectedly.

Brent was down 21 cents, or 0.5%, at $39.85 a barrel by 1016 GMT, after falling nearly 2% on Thursday, while U.S. crude dropped 11 cents, or 0.3%, to $37.19 a barrel, having fallen 2% in the previous session.

Both benchmarks were 6% down for the week.

“Financial markets are continuing to set the tone, including on the oil market. The renewed slide on U.S. stock markets dragged oil prices down with it,” Commerzbank analyst Eugen Weinberg said.

Heavyweight tech-related stocks resumed their decline on Thursday as the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits remained high.

“Stock markets dived, oil followed, and Brent lost 15% of its value in five trading sessions as money managers liquidated,” oil broker PVM’s Tamas Varga said.

Also dampening the market mood, the U.S. Senate killed a Republican bill that would have provided around $300 billion in new coronavirus aid.

Fears about an oversupply also added to the general feeling of uncertainty, Weinberg said.

In the United States, stockpiles rose last week, against expectations, as refineries slowly returned to operations after production sites were shut down due to storms in the Gulf of Mexico and the wider region.

In a further bearish sign, traders were starting to book tankers again to store crude oil and diesel, amid a stalled economic recovery as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Increasing stockpiles are likely to be a subject at a meeting on Sept. 17 of the market monitoring panel of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and allies including Russia.

The group known as OPEC+ has been withholding supply to reduce stockpiles, but analysts say the meeting is likely to focus on compliance among members, rather than seek deeper cuts.

Following Saudi Arabia, Kuwait also lowered its official selling price to Asia for October, to counter slower demand.
